KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

Where opportunity knocks  by Paul Campbell

In this ultimate issue of the Kaipara Lifestyler for 2015, we look with some pride at the attractions and opportunities the district has to offer. A look at the rolls of the local libraries that dot the Kaipara villages and towns soon indicates that demographics are changing as more and more people recognise the opportunities for a new way of life here. In this special issue, we look at the business and hospitality industry providers that are the lifeblood of the community — the people who make the Kaipara tick! With modern information and communications technology, many people are no longer tied down to the old model of commuting, parking, and the office cubicle. Sophisticated smart phones and the continuous development of associated technology, Skype for video conferencing, net based ‘cloud’ computing and sliding scale business hours have radically changed the workplace and living away from the urban sprawl is a growth industry, buoyed too by city property prices compared with what’s on offer in the rural environment. Take a look at what a new lifestyle in a four-bedroom home on an acre or two of land will cost you in the Kaipara. You could be in for a very pleasant surprise. Leaving the big city behind is just that — the city and all its trapping. The attractions are still there and only an hour or so by car away, but here in Kaipara you could well find your dream

home, with investment money left over. There are innumerable small business opportunities as well, for those with a little entrepreneurial flair. The very pace of life here changes outlooks, and the benefits flow on in many areas — improved well-being and sense of security — the technological benefits of the big city without the stress and the high costs, good schools, extensive sports facilities, health services second to none, and a wide variety of community service clubs and organisations to keep the most social person fully occupied. With the annual influx to the district of thousands of holiday makers and visitors from all parts of New Zealand and well beyond our shores, the staff of the Kaipara Lifestyler have decided to step outside the square, introduce our district and ‘wave the Kaipara flag’. Kaipara offers not just fabulous holiday destinations, from the beaches of the Pacific to the Tasman, top boating and fishing on the great harbour in between, but also new opportunities and a hugely attractive alternative to living in the city. Read on, and from us all here — a very safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful 2016 — maybe right here. 

If you live in the Kaipara, or are visiting our district, the staff and commissioners of the Kaipara District Council wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. For residents and visitors alike, there is plenty to do and see locally and let’s begin on Kaipara’s east coast where Mangawhai’s magic will be on display. On offer is surfing at the heads, family time on the beaches at the estuary, activities at Mangawhai Community Park, the stories from the museum, and art from the newly opened gallery. Head west and perhaps stop at a cafe in Kaiwaka and begin your first engagement with the Kaipara Harbour. Then it is a short run north on State Highway 1 to the Brynderwyns and a turn west on State Highway 12 to Maungaturoto — ‘A Real New Zealand Town’ steeped in history with modern trappings. On to Paparoa the ‘Village in the Valley’ with its historic landing, village green, great cafe, and gateway to a magnificent harbourside camping experience at Pahi, as well as Whakapirau or Tinopai — all wonderful holiday and fishing spots on the Kaipara Harbour. As you continue west you’ll find The Kauri Museum, internationally renowned and a treasure house of pioneer and kauri memorabilia, as well as the world’s greatest collection of kauri gum — a real-life Aladdin’s Cave. Ruawai is next, where the drained lands along the huge Northern Wairoa River grow New Zealand’s best pastures and where kumara country begins. You will pass by Tokatoka where pioneer harbour men watched for shipping. You can reach the top of this volcanic cone in 20 minutes of reasonable climbing for stunning 360 degree views. It’s a short drive onwards to Dargaville, with its bustling shops, cafes, hotels

“This shows the value of the consumer ownership model. Even in challenging times, Northpower has continued to diversify, strengthen and grow for the good of current and future shareholders, says Mr Angelo. “This distribution to Northpower’s consumers is courtesy of a dividend we have received from the company this year. “Had the company not expanded from being solely a local lines company in the 1990s, consumers would not have continued to benefit in this manner. “It is pleasing to note Northpower has again received an array of national awards this year which suggests to me company is striving to achieve highly.” Mr Angelo says in the past ten years, shareholder value in Northpower has increased from $204.8m to $252m, Northpower revenue has grown from $126.2m to $324.9m and total asset value has increased from $232.6m to $442.9m. Northpower is one of the most reliable electricity networks in New Zealand, is a leading contractor to the electricity market and continues to make strong progress in the UFB and electric vehicle sectors.

Kaipara nurtures a pioneer spirit  by Paul Campbell and Brian Eastwood

Back in the day, the Maori people of the Kaipara welcomed an adventurous flow of European settlers, determined to carve out a new life in a new land. These were the Albertlanders, from the far-flung corners of the globe to settle Kaipara — just as today’s arrivals looking for a great lifestyle choice come from myriad backgrounds. The descendants of the Albertlanders — Albertland was the first name for the wide ranging settlements on the harbour now only remembered in Port Albert itself — still farm the land and live in towns of the region, in turn welcoming

new faces seeking new opportunities in a rural setting. So the area is rich in history, and in fact proved to be the springboard for Auckland’s rise to economic prominence. From the very earliest days Kaipara has been a source of wealth that is still adding much to the nation’s coffers. In something of an historical reverse flow, many Aucklanders are escaping the pace of city life for the Kaipara.

Year end for the Kaipara District Council is no different to many organisations – there is a rush to get things done. We all go through a bit of stress, and then Christmas day arrives, and we wind down. So how has 2015 been for Council? With only ten months to go before an elected Council takes over from Commissioners, we need to have made the changes necessary to leave a sound platform for the change in governance.

So too has customer service improved. Of course you are the best judge of this. Let us know if you feel that we are difficult to deal with. Modern communications make this an easy transition. Way back when, big money was made trading in kauri gum, logging timber, running sawmills and building ships. Dargaville, Mangawhare, Naumai, Aratapu, Te Kopuru, and Tokatoka were bustling, busy Northern Wairoa river towns. Since 1905 there have been thriving dairy and meat industries, now complete with a modern meat works. Large kumara growing operations have grown with the decades.

Kaipara can boast two oceans and two harbours, a long, wide, west coast beach and the Kai Iwi lakes with enough room for everyone to enjoy the summer fun. Over on the east coast Mangawhai’s surf beaches and harbour have become popular lifestyle and holiday destinations. Mangawhai was part of that early pouring out of northern wealth. timber men and gum merchants had to ship products out through the tricky Kaipara Heads, mostly bound for Australian ports and even further afield, Mangawhai boatmen towed their vast log rafts straight down the coast to Auckland. Old shipping records show that much of the kauri, rimu and kahikatea from Northland bush ended up in Dunedin, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, contributing much to the building and growth of those cities. While this burgeoning industry flourished, so too did the fortunes of some of Auckland’s founding fathers. Sir John Logan Campbell, whose statue looks down on the city from the Domain, earned his commercial reputation and bank balance right here in the Kaipara, starting out in Mangawhare. His trading business became a part of the Brown and Campbell empire. Sir John added to profits when he built Mangawhare Hotel in 1875. It is still there, known now as the Commercial Hotel and operating as tourist accommodation. With a gum trading shop nearby, part of which is also still there, he soon owned one of the largest trading centres in what was then part of the Auckland province. But Campbell was not the only man to prosper in Northern Wairoa.

Whangarei Pet & Aquarium Centre Your family friendly pet shop

The Irish founder of the river town, Joseph Dargaville, became wealthy trading in timber and gum through his Dargaville store. When he sold part of the business he concentrated on political life in Auckland City. Pioneering days have gone from Kaipara, those

times when large ships headed out loaded with logs, when tough bushmen and gum diggers came into town for a break and life was controlled by the state of the tide. Those old timers would have told you that the tide has turned and is flowing fast again. 

Life here began with the migration of Albertlanders from Europe that occurred in the 1860s and many decided to set up residence here. The names of the earlier settlers are still present in the town today. Kaiwaka is a great place to stop on a journey from Auckland or south from Northland. For those interested in history and culture the Maori village is both a fascinating and educating experience at nearby Te Hana. Kaiwaka is home to Bianca’s cafe’, the Dutch Cheese and Deli shop, an Italian bakery, an Indian restaurant, St

The town recently made history by having one the first ChargeNet electric vehicle fast charging stations installed for Northland outside Jaques Four Square. This is a step toward the effortless movement of electric vehicles around Northland making touring easier for people who own these cars. A real sense of community  by Ann Morgan

Janine Boult was born in Invercargill and eventually ended up in Auckland. This time last year she was finding it hard to find a rental property as a single parent. “A friend of my mum said she had a rental in Kaiwaka and I liked the idea of my daughter Evie growing up in a small community so decided to make the move,” said Janine. “The city can be very impersonal and since moving here Evie has really come into her own. She goes to Small Pukekos day care here and it is amazing. She has regained her confidence which she had lost due to bullying at the previous city day care.” Janine says Kaiwaka people are welcoming to children — they are valued and seen as part of the community. “People talk to Evie and involve her as a person, not a child. She can ask questions and participate in things. “I am finishing off my university degree in early childhood teaching and I plan to make myself a part of the

MANGAWHAI

A touch of Africa  by Ayla Miller

Tasha Kimani is about as local as you can get in Mangawhai, and despite a healthy passion for travel and tourism, chose to return to her hometown to run her business, The African Touch tours whilst bringing up her three children.

 The Kimani family from left: Karoma, Zuri,Tembo, Shaka and Tasha

DREAMING OF AFRICA We make it happen

Affordable, personalised Safaris in East & Southern Africa with over 35 years combined experience. “...Karoma’s extensive experience in guiding, his focus on a safe & professional safari & his passion to share his country with others was extra special.”

After her OE, Tasha wasn’t ready to return to the land of the long white cloud and went in search of adventure in Africa, working as a tour leader. It was here she met her future husband, Kenyan-born Karoma. She eventually moved home and Karoma soon followed, where together they set up the Coastal Cow Backpackers. “I was born a Wintle which is a big family in Mangawhai. Mum and Dad are here and it is just a lovely place to live. I wasn’t really a city person. I studied travel and tourism in Auckland and when I came back from Africa, I didn’t really want to go to back there so I started the backpackers here. The reason I returned was that I just love Mangawhai and there were strong family ties.” The couple started The African Touch business when they noticed a lot of interest from locals.

“A lot of people kept asking us when we were going to take them to Africa. This went on for about a year and we thought there might be something in this, so we held an information evening and managed to fill our first two tours with mainly Mangawhai people.” Tasha and Karoma tried living in Africa in 2010 and built a camp site which they still own. They decided to return to New Zealand to raise their children for the sake of their education. “We put our son into a private school there but he didn’t like it. “He was such a Kiwi kid — he missed all his friends. School fees for private schools are really expensive and the schools are no better than Mangawhai Beach School. “While you get the sense of freedom in Africa, I think we can give our kids a better childhood in New Zealand.” 

MANGAWHAI

A growing business  by Ayla Miller

Five years ago Julie Blanchard moved to Mangawhai from West Auckland with her two-year-old son in search of greener grass on which to relocate her business Colourline Nurseries 2000 Ltd. Originally looking in Paparoa, Julie came across four acres in Mangawhai and set about growing her business from scratch on her own. “I didn’t really want to bring up my son in West Auckland and I was looking for a better lifestyle. This move meant I could work from home with him but it wasn’t easy,” she said. “I started turning the paddocks into nursery putting in irrigation and weed mat and I had to propagate everything. Now my son is at school it is a bit easier and slowly but surely the business is getting bigger.” Julie supplies a wide range of small shrubs, grasses, natives, perennials, lavenders and much more. Colourline Nurseries sells through Mangawhai gas station and selected garden centres. It is not open to the public but  Julie Blanchard moved to Mangawhai to give her son will open to trade or for bulk Caidin a better lifestyle and grow her business buyers by appointment. “I am diversifying up here because there is more of a demand for natives and flaxes.” LTD She says as the face of Mangawhai is changing and farms are being subdivided, many people are looking to plant shelter belts from pittosporums and flax bushes. With over 26 years experience in the industry in a propagation nursery, a tree nursery and a retail garden centre she is confident in the quality of her products. “All the plants are grown here on site, outside, so they are pretty tough. They are quality and they aren’t going to fall over on you.” 

Move encourages artist’s enthusiasm  by Ann Morgan

Ian McGowan moved to Mangawhai two years ago. He studied at Elam School of Fine Arts and was a pupil of renowned painter Colin McCahon, and then became an art teacher at Auckland schools including Aorere College where he worked for 16 years. “My wife Rosemary and I had purchased the cottage here in 2003 and rented it out. “We decided two years ago that I would move to the property and renovate the cottage and kick start my old arty interests” said Ian. Rosemary spotted an advert by Suza of Suza’s studio who had started a life drawing class and suggested

he go along. “It was a good place to make friends and get some practice at drawing. Rosemary still lives and works in Auckland, apart from weekends. “The classes evolved into a discussion group on aspects of Modern Art and this brought together other interested parties and created lots of fun. “Suza encouraged me to join the local Mangawhai Arts Society Inc with another friend Cliff MacPherson. “We had not considered ourselves Art Society types, so it was quite a challenge joining the local Art Trail, putting our work together in my studio shed, for the public to view.

I always wanted to be an artist and decided the time was now. He is often noted for the old saying “those who can, do — those who can’t, teach. “Of course that’s not true, for many gifted artists teach, but now Ian is free of the classroom he says he has no more excuses and that he’ll get stuck in and paint.” 

MANGAWHAI

Business from home spells success

 by Ayla Miller

 by Ann Morgan

Owner of Aotearoa Surf School Che Burnett has seen a good deal of the world, having travelled through South America, Europe and some of Asia and when he returned home, chose to move to Mangawhai to escape the pace of city life in Auckland.

Chrissy and Grant Gwilliam, moved to Mangawhai from St Heliers in February because the time had come for a lifestyle change.

 Chrissy Gwilliam upcycles old treasures for her store Hidden Treasures and says moving to Mangawhai is the best move they could have made

 Che Burnett of Aotearoa Surf School wouldn’t swap his Mangawhai lifestyle for the world

“I was living in the central suburbs of Auckland working 9–5 and having to deal with traffic. Each overseas excursion I went on I’d be sitting on a beach and thinking, why aren’t I doing this all the time?” On his last trip to Indonesia, he cut his ties with Auckland and on his return, found a place in Mangawhai instead. “Every morning I wake up and think how lucky I am. I’m very grateful for the place that I live and the community around me. “Smaller communities are much more social. “I think that Mangawhai has a unique offering which we are seeing with all

the young families moving up from Auckland. It’s got everything I need. I can go out to eat and play in the harbour, play on the surf beach and I can ride mountain bikes.” Despite having travelled all over the world Che says there is no place like home and he was never tempted to live permanently overseas. “I can’t comprehend changing where I live or the lifestyle I have developed over the years. “I like the idea of being out on the coast but not too far from the city. The east coast is where it’s at and Mangawhai is close enough to Auckland to be an Auckland get away.” 

“Our daughter and her partner live in Kaiwaka with our first granddaughter so we are nice and close to visit and we still have two children in Auckland,” said Chrissy. “At first it seemed a long trip to go back to the city but it’s actually not far at all to visit family. It feels like it when you first move but once you’ve done the trip a few times it is easy and you enjoy the scenery along the way.” Chrissy was an office manager and Grant still works as a sales rep across Northland for Ruka Confectionary, a family owned company based in East Tamaki. “I opened my store Mangawhai Hidden Treasures, at 20 Bagnal Rd, for something to do as I wanted to work a few days a week.”

New premises for local business  by Ayla Miller

A historical town After turning left at Brynderwyn onto State Highway 12 travellers will soon discover the historic farming centre of Maungaturoto — ‘A Real New Zealand Town’.

Nicole Williams of Maungaturoto 2nd Hand has moved her diverse and growing business downtown to 30 Hurndall Street. The family business was started by her aunt, Vydene Williams, who ran it for many years before stepping down and letting Nicole and her partner Shane take over with visions to expand it. “Vydene has taught me everything I know and she will always my mentor,” she said. “We are trying to make the shop a destination of things that

trigger memories from the past and present,” Nicole says. “We also offer locally roasted coffee ‘Bica’ with iced coffee over summer.” Customers can grab a coffee and browse through the extensive range of new and used goods. “We moved to these new premises so we could expand. Our other store ran out of space. Here we have room to move and ample off street parking. “We have almost everything. Furniture, books, clothing, toys, linen, kitchenware, antiques and collectables, tools, hardware and much more with a broad range of prices to suit everyone.” Not only does Maungaturoto 2nd Hand offer a wide range of new and used items, they also offer local fresh produce, as it grows, including eggs and honey. Local jewellery and artwork is on display as well. On most weekends you will find the whole family helping out and Nicole’s sister Shaye is their resident barista. There are plans to open a small garden centre next year stocking new and used garden equipment and a wider variety of plants. 

 Maungaturoto Market Fun. Well known Kelvin Foster is more than happy receiving a hug at the market

There are old homesteads in and around this hilltop village which is steeped in history. The Albertland settlers arrived creating this town over 150 years ago colonising the northern Kaipara Harbour. Cottages were constructed from a single felled kauri tree. Kauri formed the backbone of early industry in the region, making way for agriculture in the present day. The only public house in New Zealand to have been nearly lost at sea when it was barged across the harbour to it’s current site, the Maungaturoto Hotel has food and accommodation for those wanting to enjoy the experience of the historic building. The Maungaturoto Country Club on Bickerstaff Road, is the hub of associated sport and social connections and nearby is the Maungaturoto Motocross Club track. Opposite the country club is the home of the Otamatea Repertory Theatre. Here audiences are treated to many top quality shows presented by local talented drama enthusiasts. It is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who stage plays and musicals throughout the year, enjoying facilities which many city acting companies would envy.

Travellers can discover the collection of shops to browse on the main street which is home of some of Northland’s award-winning pies. The town also has a reputation for hearty and fresh meals across a variety of flavours and styles of cuisine. The town has many stores including appliances, clothing, gifts and an honest-to-goodness real Kiwi butcher’s shop. A market takes place on the first Friday of every month at the Centennial Hall where shoppers can enjoy a coffee or two whilst browsing through the fresh produce, preserves, arts and crafts. A true community spirit permeates the town, as seen at the annual ‘old fashioned’ school gala, bands playing at the country tavern, and a proud local rugby team in the form of the mighty Otamatea Hawks. Travellers can take a trip through the gorge to the waterfalls, visit historic Batley and scenic Whakapirau. With the spectacular mountain Pukereinga set in dairy farming country as a backdrop, this vibrant country town has plenty of things to see and do all within close proximity including the stunning Piroa Falls on Waipu Gorge Road — a popular spot for summer swimming. 

Ric Horridge of Horridge Fabric’s Ltd moved to Maungaturoto from West Auckland to run his textile wholesale business without the hustle and bustle of city life. “The thing that attracted me to the area was really cost-structure. It is much cheaper here than trying to conduct a small business in Auckland and a better lifestyle,” Ric says. After living in Auckland for many years he has seen the city change immensely and was adamant he wanted to get out of the super city area as he no longer enjoyed the fast paced life. With the convenience of cellphones and courier systems, Ric says businesses can now be run from anywhere in New Zealand and as a lot of his business is conducted online, the opportunity to live in a rural town opened up for him. “I started out working for a company as a marketing manager and was made redundant in 1988 when the big share market crash happened.” He decided to carry on doing what he knew and took over an established business forming  Horridge Fabric’s Ltd. He and his wife Debbie still own a house in Te Atatu South which is on the market and for now Debbie is living there holding down the fort. “She is looking forward to doing all sorts of exciting things when she

Centre of a wider community Paparoa, the village in the valley, is the centre of an upper harbour community that includes nearby Pahi, Matakohe and the world renowned Kauri Museum, through to Tinopai, 25 minutes or so drive away. A mini supermarket, local pub, cafe’s, school, doctors rooms, library and a variety of shops make the village an area focal point. Over the summer months it takes on a carnival atmosphere with two major events. The Pahi Regatta brings in crowds on Anniversary Weekend from all around the district to take part in the annual marine festivities. Tents are pitched, caravans parked and water vessels of all shapes and sizes are prepared for events including races, kayaking contests and other aquatic activities, including the $1,000 bathtub race. The Paparoa A and P Show is being held on Saturday, February 6 and celebrating its 140th year at the Paparoa Showgrounds. The show has become a firm favourite on the Paparoa community calendar with show jumping, animal showing, wood chopping, and sheep shearing contests. Paparoa offers a fine place to stay whilst exploring the Kaipara. Visit the Paparoa Lions’ walkway, steeped in Maori history and blanketed in native bush. The community’s maintained track winds up to the Paparoa Pa which is believed to be over 250 years old. There are also the regular events such as the Farmers’ Market on every Saturday and the Arty Farty summer market held from 10am–4pm every Friday at the community gardens. At Matakohe, just 10 minutes away, there is dining and accommodation available at Matakohe House with meals also available at the Gumdiggers Cafe, while the museum itself offers days of exploration into the pioneer past and the history of the timber and kauri gum industry that gave Kaipara it’s economic kick-start. KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

RUAWAI

Along the Kauri coast Festive lights Ruawai means ‘two waters’ when translated from the Maori language and refers to the nearby Northern Wairoa River and Kaipara Harbour.

‘for the love of it’  by Ayla Miller

Gordon and Julie Lindsay and their children have been lighting up the back blocks of a Ruawai dairy farm for 15 years with their Christmas lights collection.

Sitting on State Highway 12, it makes a convenient stop on the journey from Brynderwyn to Dargaville, offering a Four Square for supplies, a pizza and steak bar, a cafe, a corner store, a petrol station, a bed factory, and gift shop amongst other small businesses. The small township serves the surrounding agricultural community which consists mainly of dairy and drystock cattle farming and kumara growing. A monument to the foresight of the original pioneers, these safeguards enable the farmers and horticulturalists to produce high-quality butter-fat and crops of kumara. The close-knit community and rural lifestyle has enabled the indigenous Maori, Dalmation and British immigrants to live alongside one another in community-spirited harmony for over 150 years. Ruawai is the self-proclaimed ‘Kumara capital of the world’, as over 90 percent of the total New Zealand production of kumara comes from the Ruawai and Dargaville region. The Ruawai Flats are rich flood plains below sea level and feature a

panoramic view of the residual volcanic cone of Tokatoka. The town is protected by a system of canals, flood gates, drains and stop banks, making it one of the best dairy pasture regions in New Zealand and well-served by a primary school, a college and a kindergarten all supported by the community. Adult education is catered for through the high school and there is a community run Art Studio. The community are enthusiastic participants in sporting activities with successful rugby and netball teams coming from Ruawai and surrounds. Being on the shores of the beautiful and abundant Kaipara Harbour means fishing is also a popular pastime and business activity. Ruawai is proud of its community organisations and the Ruawai Volunteer Fire Brigade, first organised in 1952. They also have a popular bowling club, and boat ramp with access to great harbour fishing. Keen anglers versed in local knowledge negotiate a notorious harbour bar and sail into the Tasman Sea in pursuit of prized Marlin. 

 The Lindsay’s Christmas lights collection add a splash of colour to a rural Ruawai dairy farm

“It’s getting a bit out of hand,” Gordon says. “It gets bigger every year. When it’s going the whole house is lit up. The Lindsay’s are contract milkers which means they don’t get away over Christmas. “Having the lights is like camping for us. We sit out on the lawn and chat to people who come to visit.” It all started one day, like any collection, when they bought a few Christmas decorations and things escalated from there. “We just bought some lights and thought they were pretty cool. It’s either that or Grandma’s teaspoon collection and this is much more impressive.” Now they purchase a few more every

Ruawai Kindergarten

year, many off Trademe and some from specialised lighting manufacturers. They don’t charge people to see their lights, “we just do it for the love of it,” Gordon says, and he doesn’t want to give too much away because “people have to come and see it for themselves.” They have been known to get up to 120 people admiring their efforts on their Wallace Road property and families often come back more than once. In the weeks leading up to Christmas the Lindsay’s promise something a little bit special for the children. “I won’t tell you what it is, it is a surprise, but nobody else will have anything like it.” 

Our vision is to support experiences and opportunities, which lay strong foundations for future learning to occur. We have an open door policy and welcome families in Ruawai and the surrounding communities to call in and have a look around our fantastic modern facility. Our hours are Monday to Friday 9am – 3pm.

Here at Ruawai Kindergarten we believe that children develop best in a natural home like environment where we actively support children’s transitions in an environment where holistic development is underpinned by the Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whariki. We are a unique rural Kindergarten situated within the Education Hub of Ruawai, licensed to carry 30 children and offer 20 free hours.

New Zealanders sold on First National

There’s a lot to consider when it comes to selling, buying, leasing or renting a home. That’s why real estate agents play such an important role. They help shoulder the stress, providing market experience and insights to help you make better informed decisions. They guide you through the process and help connect buyers with sellers, and landlords with tenants.

Choosing a home is a huge decision – whether you’re renting or buying – and one that is not without its complications. The New Zealand housing market is riddled with uncertainty right now, with prices climbing and speculation of a ‘housing bubble’.

No matter what your reasons for needing their services, you will be placing a large amount of trust in these professionals to represent your interests and do a good job. Fortunately, New Zealanders are pretty satisfied with their real estate agents. According to our survey, 73% of respondents say they maintain a good relationship with their real estate agent, while 65% would recommend theirs to a friend.

DARGAVILLE

A centre of excellence  by Paul Campbell

In the heart of the Kaipara, the riverside town of Dargaville is the hub for the wider farming and horticultural community, a service town with all the amenities of any city and the site of our local government offices. Here are excellent services — the hospital and medical centre — the banks, service industries, supermarket, shops, hotels, motels and restaurants with plenty of variety to satisfy a wide range of budgets. In the surrounding countryside there is massive variety too, ranging from the sheltered waters of the Northern Wairoa river down to the huge expanse of the Kaipara harbour, across to the boisterous waters of the Tasman Sea off the west coast, north to Waipoua Forest and across to Kai Iwi lakes. The latter has boating and waterskiing on offer. The beach settlements of Glinks Gully on Ripiro beach are just minutes from town For the history buff, there’s a wealth of information to sift through and as a starting point, visit the excellent museum overlooking the town. Settled by Joseph Dargaville and his family, the original homestead still stands today from the time he arrived in the Northern Wairoa in 1871. He was immediately impressed by the area’s potential. Kauri milling was a springboard to prosperity as the land was opened up for farming. As commerce grew, the original settlement emerged at the junction of the Kaihu and Wairoa rivers. The town today has an ever-growing population, and a vibrant community focus, epitomised by the Dargaville Business Forum facilitating progress in the business and wider community. The Kauri Coast Promotion Society is another organisation with its sights Read the newspaper online

The 28-year-old has recently qualified from Evolution School of Massage and Beauty with a Certificate in Anatomy and Physiology and Holistic Therapies as well as a Diploma in Holistic Massage, and opened her own business in Edwin Arcade, Victoria Street, Dargaville on December 2. Krista was born and bred in Dargaville and caught the travel bug early on in life. At the age of 18 she left for London for two years, working in administration. “We had Europe on our doorstep and got to experience so many different things,” she says. After a two-year stint working back in Auckland she and her then partner, now husband James, moved to Sydney for three–and–a–half years before they decided to come home to marry. Krista says she enjoys making people feel good and has always dreamt of opening her own business. “I find it rewarding and satisfying to be able to help people relax,” she says, and lists the 90-minute full body relaxation

TAHAROA DOMAIN/KAI IWI LAKES Northland’s shining jewel. Come stay and play at Kai Iwi Lakes, Taharoa Domain, one of New Zealand’s best holiday spots. Nestled amongst 538 hectares of premier recreation reserve with white sand, freshwater dune lakes renowned for their jewel-like beauty and clear waters. Perfect for a wonderful camping experience with the choice of two camp grounds located on the lake foreshore, both offering an ideal camping experience for tents, caravans or motorhomes. Pine Beach Camping Ground has camp sites, wash and shower facilities, two flushing toilet blocks, playground and summer seasonal services, including a mobile shop and camp staff located on-site. There’s even internet access on demand. Promenade Point has camping sites, a new toilet block (however no shower facilities) and provides a true relaxed ‘kiwiana’ camping experience. There is a strict no pets and dogs policy to protect the native wildlife.

Cost – $10 Adults (15 years +) Children $5 (3-14years) $3 Administration fee per paying person.

TINOPAI CAMP GROUND Sea views and sunny days await at this ‘absolute waterfront’ camper’s paradise. The facilities are modest and traditional, but clean and decorated with colorful artwork. The swimming is good here all summer, or you can fish off the nearby wharf. A lovely ‘off the beaten track’ spot for relaxing, and there is a store down the road that provides everything a Kiwi campsite needs. Enjoy an old fashioned camping holiday with wood-fired BBQs on-site, cabin accommodation available, hot showers and kitchen facilities.

Cost — Adult $12, Child $5

GLINKS GULLY CAMP GROUND Beside a magnificent stretch of the Tasman coast, this camp is nestled into a plateau above the bay. There are with plenty of tent spaces and it is an ‘open secret’ that this is a great place to fish. Pack your surfcaster and enjoy. Kitchen and picnic facilities await so you can grill the one that didn’t get away!

Cost – $18 for 2 adults // Under 5s FREE

KELLYS BAY CAMP GROUND Kellys Bay is a small rural seaside community with a stunningly beautiful beach, facing east toward the sunrise on the majestic Kaipara Harbour. Some of the region’s best fishing is right on your doorstep, with the campground just across the road from the beach. This is Kiwi camping at its best — unrefined and close to nature, but all the better for it!

Cost – Powered Sites: $17 for two adults & 2 children Non-power Sites: $13 for two adults & 2 children Extra people $2

PAHI MOTOR CAMP Located on a little spit of land extending out into the waters of the Kaipara, Pahi Motor Camp has a well deserved reputation as a relaxing and scenic spot. The sites are close to an excellent wharf, boat ramps and a sheltered inner harbour that is great for swimming, fishing and boating. All sites are level, some with sheltering trees — especially an historic Moreton Bay Fig tree, said to be one of the ten largest trees in the world. Enjoy modern amenities to complement your stay, such as a children’s playground, well-appointed kitchen, on-site store, filtered water supply and laundry.

Cost – Adults $12pp, Children (4-14) $6 // Under 4s FREE

Career choice ‘a privilege’

Dargaville Bobcat Services

 by Ann Morgan

Jessica Pople grew up in Auckland as a city girl and loves helping animals and people. She became interested in the funeral industry and embalming when she was working at a vet clinic as a surgical nurse and that wasn’t quite what she wanted so after much thought went along to the local funeral home to see how things worked and loved it. She had a time of work experience and never left. “I have always liked helping animals and people. I became an embalmer and funeral director’s assistant. “Having the privilege of looking after people for the last time, knowing they are well cared for and helping people through grief is an honour,” said Jessica. She worked in Albany for two years but wanted a change from the fast paced city life and decided to move to Dargaville two years ago to be with her partner, Bruce Young who works at Hart Funeral Services. “When I was young my family always went once a year on a holiday to a farm down South and I always went back to Auckland thinking I want to live in the country.  Jessica Pople has never regretted moving to Dargaville and says her line of work is both an honour and a privilege “I have never regretted the move. Dargaville is a great town that is Bruce and I enjoy working with people moving here in the past two definitely going ahead and the Kaipara and helping people. There is a lovely years is good. It is a positive thing and as an area has great people. I grew up sense of community and people are it is a privilege to do the work we do.”  as a city girl but I love life in the country, always helpful. it is so much simpler and living in a rural “There is a lot to do in the district, community is really nice. and seeing the area change and more

“I first came to New Zealand in 1988 to visit an aunt with my mum. Mum met a Kiwi man and they got married here so we never returned to Canada.” Two years ago he visited his family in Toronto for the first time in 14 years and stayed until this year when he returned to Christchurch to see his daughters. “My friends who own Witch Clothing on Victoria Street had moved here and asked me to come and finish a tattoo which I had started years ago. “They told me what a great town Dargaville is and once I got here I decided to open a studio in the back of their store. I have been a tattooist for 10 years now and do custom designs and work from ideas people have, ranging from black and grey to full colour, any size.” They are still completing the signage and adding the finishing touches to the studio but he is open for business. “I like the town, the people are really friendly, this place is great. It’s quiet and easy to live in. The Kaipara in general is nice and peaceful. We have toured around and the beaches are awesome. There is some wonderful scenery out

DARGAVILLE ADVERTORIAL

Capstone to a stellar year Lindsay West of Dargaville Ford has seen many designs and badges come and go in his years of bringing the blue oval brand to the Kaipara. But he never thought he’d see the day when he could sell a right-hand-drive Ford Mustang from his forecourt.

Perhaps the most iconic of the Dearborn, Michigan company’s muscle cars, the Mustang was created in the 1960s and has become the subject of everything from trading cards to computer games to big-budget films like ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ and ‘Bullitt’. Now the latest generation has landed in New Zealand, offering a new flagship vehicle to lead out Ford’s 2016 range. It’s an arrival which caps off a big year for Ford, who have seen new models ushered in across all classes and sizes. The continuing popularity of the Focus, the reign of the Ranger as top ute in the nation, and even a practical new Transit Custom van have bulked out the

stable at Ford, bringing new technology such as the SYNC II infotainment interface with them. Dargaville Ford have also had a great year off the forecourt, supporting local sports teams and charitable causes. Recently their Blue Oval Roadshow event raised in excess of $3,000 for the Northern Wairoa Football Club, drawing record crowds in the process. Linday and the team’s latest happy customer drove home in a brand new five litre V8 Mustang in Ford’s traditional deep blue livery. More examples of this breathtaking 21st century muscle car are on their way for 2016 — set to be another great year for both the brand and its local representatives.

Climate and costs prompt move  by Ann Morgan

Wally and Sjannette Hagoort moved from dairy farming in the Waikato to become missionaries in Papua New Guinea, helping to restore and upgrade a Reformed Churches of New Zealand mission home in a volunteer role. “We were in PNG for 11 years with others from around the world working with people in the settlements and starting new churches,” said Wally. The time came for the couple to return home to New Zealand and they started researching where they may like to settle, taking into consideration climate and housing costs. “We discovered Dargaville for both cost and climate and came to visit for a weekend. It struck me how friendly people were,” said Sjannette. “We wanted to ensure we found somewhere that we could interact with our neighbours. We liked the small town community feel and the housing

prices were very affordable.” The couple revisited in October last year and whilst here purchased a home. They say it took six months to settle and find work. They have both joined the Northern Wairoa Golf Club and Wally is now the assistant manager at the BP service station and is a teaching elder at the Dargaville Gospel Church. Sjannette is a relief teacher at Dargaville Kindergarten and volunteers at the combined churches food bank which she says is a nice way to meet new people. “We had travelled the district looking around but felt drawn to Dargaville,” said Wally. “They say it takes two years to settle when re-entering

your home country as life has gone on without you, so moving towns wasn’t hard to do. Coming here has been good. Our neighbours are wonderful. “Our first night living here was January 30, and our neighbour came and introduced herself.

Shifting dunes create a rugged backdrop to the hazy coastline that stretches into the distance. On a clear day beach-goers can see all the way to Maunganui Bluff, a favourite spot for picking fresh green-lipped mussels. With easy access to Ripiro, New Zealand’s longest driveable beach, and plenty of good fishing spots, visitors and locals can enjoy a Northland experience unlike any other. With its rocky history, the Kaipara coastline is littered with 113 wrecks recorded, although locals believe it to be 153, the first being the Aurora in 1840. The French Man O’ War, L Alcmene, also came to an unfortunate end at Baylys and many relics were recovered and preserved at Dargaville Museum by local historian Noel Hilliam. A commemoration plaque can be seen at the lookout on the road to Baylys Beach.

Along with the rugged European maritime history, Baylys was also home to a major tribal battle in 1807 at Moremonui. The battle was fought between local Ngati Whatua warriors and Nga Puhi in the first warfare where muskets were used. Now a much more peaceful setting, Baylys has a variety of accommodation options to suit any budget and food options for any taste. Sharkey’s has an expansive menu with gourmet burgers and kumara chips, perfect after a long day out in the sun. Those looking for adventure can ride their trail and quad bikes, go surfing, take a long walk on the beach, or discover the Baylys Clifftop Walkway, a community created track from Chases Gorge to Ripiro, for the perfect place to sit and enjoy the spectacular west coast sunsets.

KAI IWI/TROUNSON

Experiencing the mighty forest  by Ann Morgan

In between Kaihu and Waimamaku, heading toward Waipoua from Dargaville, travellers will find the Waipoua Visitor Centre and the Forrest Cafe’ managed by Laura Rahui, who is also a member of the local Te Roroa iwi. “I came up from Waiheke Island for a holiday with my sister for a couple of weeks and whilst I was here my uncle rang to say he needed someone to run the cafe. He knew I had experience in catering and thought I could be interested,” said Laura. “Most of my life I have lived in Auckland and I decided it was a blessing to come up and find employment. It has been a wonderful opportunity to get to know my iwi history. “I have been here now since November 3 and haven’t regretted the move. It has been a unique and amazing experience so far.” The visitor centre provides local knowledge and information for tourists and will soon be promoting the giant

kauri tree Tane Mahuta through ambassadors who will give information on the forest and Kauri dieback disease, nature walks and trails, hiking and other local knowledge. The cafe sells souvenirs, gifts and honey which they produce personally. There is a campground and, between January 8–10, Circus Kumarani comes to town where they provide entertainment and this year they will have their own coffee guru on hand. “Personally for me, learning about my family history and Te Roroa has been wonderful. People here are very passionate and seeing how they care for the forest, nature, the coast line has been great. In terms of the cafe’ guests have really warmed to our new menu

 Laura Rahui manages the Forrest Cafe’ at Waipoua visitors centre and says working in the Kauri forest environment is beautiful

and we are looking at extending it going into our peak season. “We aim to show tourists the uniqueness of the area. We are in a forest setting and all of our food is freshly made daily — it is all home

TE KOPURU/POUTO ADVERTORIAL

Exploring kumara history Warren and Mavis Suckling’s popular Kumara Box on Pouto Road has been a huge hit with both children and adults for many years now. Ernie’s — aka Warren — is known locally as ‘The Kumara King’ and he celebrates Dargaville’s famous Kumara state here, presenting his live Kumara show. “Since the opening of the Kumara Box I have presented my show to thousands of visitors including the Maori king and his family,” said Ernie. He also conducts the famous drive around his extensive kumara farm on their tractor powered train with carriages that have been fashioned from oil drums painted with matching colours of his kumara crops. The train tour takes travellers past his collections and unique creations often fashioned from recycled materials from days gone by and here you will find New Zealand’s smallest church. Only 10 minutes from Dargaville township, you could be sitting back and relaxing in Ernie’s shed experiencing his unique stories and learning some interesting facts about the Kaipara and the kauri forest. The tour starts in what was once one of his kumara storage sheds. Today it is full of memorabilia collected over the years from the region’s past. Here Ernie tells stories of the Kumara’s farming

St Joseph’s Catholic School Dargaville

Access to education for all

St Joseph’s Catholic School has a unique Catholic character catering for the needs of all students from year one to year eight.

Northland as a region stands out in national statistics for having some the lowest levels of literacy and numeracy in New Zealand.

Our vision is to “Flourish in faith, hope and love while realising our gifts and talents”.

Government initiatives such as zero fees Youth Guarantee and Intensive Literacy and Numeracy programmes go some way towards supporting further learning, however the isolation of many Northland communities means that too many people are still missing out on the education that could help them raise their socio-economic standing. To try and combat this Regent Training Centre offers free transport via their vans that travel all over Northland. Warkworth, Dargaville, Kaikohe and Whangaruru and practically everywhere in between, are all serviced ensuring that learners get to campuses

We are a multicultural school community offering a variety of multimedia, sporting, cultural and dynamic learning programmes. We will be open for new enrolments on Friday 29th January and Tuesday 2nd February 2016. Term 1 starts on Wednesday 3rd February

If you are looking for quality childcare in Rodney or Kaipara, then look no further. Our wonderful educarers care for children in their warm, child-safe homes. Small ratios. Fabulous opportunities for making friends and learning through play. Winz subsidies available. 20 hours free.

on time, and then safely back home again. The van drivers also offer the first of many levels of support to those learners for whom education may not have worked previously. Programmes at RTC focus predominantly on the trades such as building, panel beating and painting, forestry, hospitality and Information and Communications Technology. There are no prerequisites other than to be 16–19 years old, and learning is practically based, more often than not done in the workshop or outdoors rather than in a classroom. The Poutama Ako/Literacy and Numeracy programme is open to all ages who have lower levels of literacy and numeracy. Teaching for this is done in the context of the learner themselves and what they want to, or need to achieve. If you believe your or someone else’s barrier to learning is transport, then give RTC a call on 0800 734 368, they may be able to help.

BUSINESS

Embroidering friendships

New Year preparations

 by Ayla Miller

With the New Year just around the corner we all reflect on the past year and start to plan for the new. Perhaps you are thinking it is time to draw up a Will.

An embroidery class that has been going for 10 years in Dargaville is attracting keen crafts people from as far away as Kerikeri and Dairy Flat.

 The Janome Embroidery Club ladies come from near and far to take part in Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre’s monthly classes

The monthly classes were set up by Marion McEwing of Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre to help her customers and those interested in embroidery, learn more about their Janome embroidery machines. “I went to the Auckland Craft show one year and met people who said they didn’t know how to use their machines and couldn’t find anyone to show them, so I told them to come and see me, and it went from there,” she said. “Over the years the group has stayed with us. We have all become good friends and have a lot of fun.” Every month the group learn new techniques and practise with different

functions on their machines. Between them, Marion says she and her daughter Jessica have a wealth of knowledge. The projects over the years have ranged from cushion covers, purses made entirely on the embroidery machine to tapestries, table runners and many more creations. “I have been in the business for 21 years now and they come to us because we have the answers.” Marion says as well as facilitating her customers’ needs, the classes create a spin off for the town. “The ladies often go to buy their lunch and go shopping or get their cars serviced here.” 

There are many good reasons for making a Will. The most important things to consider are who will be your executor — the person that your Will appoints to manage and distribute your estate — and who will be the beneficiaries of your assets. You can also consider funeral arrangements, such as whether you wish to buried or cremated, and who is to look after your dependent children. The executors will be in charge of carrying out your wishes, so they should be responsible and trustworthy. We advise against attempting to prepare and execute your own Will. In almost every ‘homemade’ Will we have encountered, there have been significant omissions, misstatements or contradictions which have caused confusion. Additionally, incorrect drafting and execution has caused them to be

declared invalid. Correct preparation and execution of a Will is a relatively inexpensive exercise when compared to the costs which can be incurred with court litigation in an attempt to resolve disputes arising from poorly crafted and incorrectly executed ones. If you wish to treat descendants differently, or exclude one or more descendants, it is essential to take advice, and to provide explanations, or in your instructions to your lawyer. You can change your Will after you have made it, either by making a new one or by adding a Codicil — an amendment — and this can be done at any time after the Will is completed. Please feel free to contact Hammonds Law in the New Year for help preparing your Will. Our offices reopen on Monday, January 11, 2016. Have a safe and happy holiday season. 
