KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

A place to call home Welcome to the ultimate edition of the Kaipara Lifestyler for 2014. With the annual influx to the district of thousands of holiday-makers and visitors from all parts of New Zealand and well beyond our shore, the staff of the Kaipara Lifestyler have decided to step outside the square, introduce our district and wave the Kaipara flag. Kaipara offers not just fabulous holiday destinations, from the Pacific to the Tasman shores, with the great harbour in between, but also new opportunities and a hugely attractive alternative to living in the city. Generations have flocked to the farm, the beach, the high country for holidays, only to return reluctantly to the urban environment and its housing, jobs, education, and services. In this issue, we therefore showcase some of the attractions and opportunities the district has to offer, as well as profiling the business and hospitality industry providers that are the lifeblood of the community — the people who make the Kaipara tick! With modern information and communications technology, many people are no longer tied down to the old model of commuting, parking, and the office cubicle. As video conferencing, net based ‘cloud’ computing and international business hours shape our views of work

— and the work-life balance — living away from the urban sprawl is a more viable option than ever. Take a look at what a fourbedroom home on an acre or two of land will cost you in the Kaipara. You could be in for a very pleasant surprise. Those who leave the big city behind may very well be able to purchase their dream home and still have investment money left over. There are innumerable small business opportunities here as well, for those of an entrepreneurial frame of mind! The very pace of life here changes outlooks, and the benefits flow on in many areas — improved well-being and sense of security; the technological benefits of the big city without the stress and the high costs, good schools, extensive sports facilities, health services second to none and a wide variety of community service clubs and organisations to keep the most social person fully occupied. Read on, and from us all here — a very safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year. 

Our Kaipara District is a special place. Its attractions and promise is one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets. Even its history is full of gems — a history of life spanning the tens of thousands of years that the great Kauri has been around. Our oldest ‘citizen’ Te Matua Ngahere — the dignified 2,000-year-old Kauri that sits prominently in our Waipoua forest, has many stories to tell. Visit him at night, and listen to the stories of the forest and hear its bird life. Agriculture, forestry and horticulture form the basis of our economy. We are the kumara capital of the world. And we have great fishing, on both of our coasts. While far enough from Auckland to maintain our distinctive lifestyle, we are close enough to commute to for recreation. We are the home of the ‘real’ bach. Drive into our small villages, and you will see them. Yet we also have plenty of spaces on our beaches and hideaway locations to enable those who want more luxurious accommodation to establish their place. You can buy, or find our motels, B&Bs, luxury lodges or hotels to rest up. Of course, you can make our District your place of work — and with the advantages that technology brings

today, you can make this your office, living on the coast or in the quiet countryside to run your business nationally or internationally. We have excellent schools, and great community activities, ranging from the arts and events to all forms of sporting and recreational pursuits. We have the finest kauri museum in the world — the internationally renowned Kauri Museum at Matakohe. Or if you are interested in a piece of maritime history, Dargaville’s maritime  Kaipara District Council commissioner, John Robertson collection is a stop to make. What’s more you can move a Pacific sunrise, or a Tasman sunset, around our district with ease — no untrammelled by a cluttered skyline. This is holiday time. K A I PA R A H I S T O RY

Kaipara heads into the future  by Paul Campbell and Brian Eastwood

They came from the far-flung corners of the globe to settle Kaipara — just as today’s arrivals looking for a great lifestyle choice come from myriad backgrounds. In the 1860s, the tide of arrival was led by non-conformist church followers from all over Europe. These were the Albertlanders, pioneers seeking land grants on the northern Kaipara. Many of the descendants of these forbears still farm the region today. So the area is rich in history, and in fact proved to be the crucible for Auckland’s rise to economic prominence. From the very earliest days Kaipara has been a source of wealth that is still adding much to the nation’s coffers. At first big money was made trading in kauri gum, logging timber, running sawmills and building ships. Dargaville, Mangawhare, Naumai, Aratapu, Te Kopuru, and Toka Toka were bustling, busy Northern Wairoa river towns. Since 1905 there have been thriving dairy and meat industries, now complete with a modern meat works. Large kumara growing operations have grown with the decades. Kaipara can boast two oceans and two harbours, a long, wide, west coast beach and large lakes with enough room for everyone to enjoy the summer fun. Over on the east coast

Mangawhai’s surf beaches and harbour have become popular lifestyle and holiday destinations. Mangawhai was part of that early pouring out of northern wealth. There was a rich gum and timber trade with expert ship builders plying their trade. Where Kaipara Harbour timber men and gum merchants had to ship products out through the tricky Kaipara Heads, mostly bound for Australian ports and even further afield, Mangawhai boatmen towed their vast log rafts straight down the coast to Auckland. Old shipping records show that much of the kauri, rimu and kahikatea from Northland bush ended up in Dunedin, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, contributing much to the building and growth of those cities. And while this burgeoning industry flourished, so too did the fortunes of some of Auckland’s founding fathers. Sir John Logan Campbell, whose statue looks down on the city from the Domain, earned his commercial reputation and bank balance right here in the Kaipara, starting out in Mangawhare. His trading business

became a part of the Brown and Campbell empire. Sir John added to profits when he built Mangawhare Hotel in 1875. It is still there, known now as the Commercial Hotel and operating as tourist accommodation.

With a gum trading shop nearby, part of which is also still there, he soon owned one of the largest trading centres in what was then part of the Auckland province. But Campbell was not the only man to prosper in Northern Wairoa. The

KAIWAKA

The gateway to the Kaipara

DRIVE SAFE

S FO A R LE

It is the gateway town of the Kaipara, and encapsulates all that’s good about living away from the busy urban area. Kaiwaka on State Highway One is the last stop before a visitor turns westwards to the Kaipara proper, and it retains the advantages of living in a vibrant community, with room to relax.

On Rural Roads

Everything you need for the holiday season – all in one place Open 7 days

for Grocery, Hardware, Ice, Lotto & ATM

Kaiwaka is just a one hour drive from Auckland, a small riverside town situated near the huge Kaipara Harbour, and close to Mangawhai Heads on the coast. It began life as a stop-over for the huge migration of Albertlanders from Europe that occurred in the 1860s, many of whom stayed there and the names of those earlier settlers resonate on the town today. Kaiwaka is a great place to stop overnight on a journey north from Auckland, to explore the Kaipara Harbour region’s east and west coasts, including Mangawhai Heads and the Kauri Coast. You’ll find a range of accommodation options that includes hotel, motel, bed and breakfast, and self-contained holiday homes. It is easy to visit scenic east and west coast locations and you’ll find fishing, diving, surfing and other aquatic activities. For those interested in history and culture, a model Maori village is a fascinating experience. There are other small museums and art and craft galleries in towns throughout the region, and of course, some 50km further on, there’s the world renowned Kauri Museum. The town has an arty coffee stop, cheese factory shop, and an Italian bakery, making it an ideal place for

buying provisions for that picnic, or holiday larder. Today Kaiwaka is known as ‘The Little Town of Lights’ after enterprising locals decorated their home and the town followed suit to create Christmas splendour by night when most of the town’s buildings are bedecked with thousands of lights. 

Mr Singh and his wife Manveer moved to Kaiwaka two years ago from Auckland. “Kaiwaka’s got a great lifestyle,” says Mr Singh. I had some experience in hospitality. MANGAWHAI

The community spirit is alive and strong Mangawhai by the sea, has had its problems in recent months, with a massive debt stemming from a mis-managed wastewater scheme. But it has also demonstrated a true community spirit, and this is evidenced by a strong emphasis on arts, an excellent museum project, as well as the golf club and country club, and many other attractions. Overlooking the Mangawhai Harbour, on the east coast of the Kaipara, the Pacific Ocean is a handy playground. Mangawhai was a landing-place for the Albertland settlers who populated the Northern Kaipara in the 1860s and onwards, with many families descended from those pioneers still farming in the surrounding countryside today, or running businesses in various Northland centres. History aside, Mangawhai is a popular seaside holiday destination, and home to many artists and craftsmen, lifestylers who contribute to the thriving chocolate making, avocado, wine and olive oil industries, and young families looking for a more relaxed way of life. It has a range of bars and restaurants, and in the summer becomes a Northland mecca for holiday-makers. There are five beaches within a 15 minute drive offering sailing, fishing, surfing or just lazing on the sand, guarded in part by the Mangawhai Surf Lifesaving Club. The golf club hosts open tournaments, while bowls and petanque are available nearby. Fitness enthusiasts can participate in the Annual Triathlon, explore the many bush and ocean walks or register for the highlight of the year, the Mangawhai Walking Weekend which is held in either March or April. MANGAWHAI

‘These are my passions’

Mangawhai-based artist Sarah C has been painting, creating and designing throughout her life. Her artwork is in private collections both in New Zealand and internationally as well as in public pieces displayed throughout the country. Sarah has strong family connection with the Mangawhai area. Her mother’s people travelled from Newcastle to Mangawhai in the early 1900s and she spent her childhood and teenage years in Mangawhai Heads. She recently returned there to live and work. Her Maori ancestry flows down through her fathers family from the Ngati Porou of the Coromandel. “I was born in Warkworth in the mid 70’s and grew up enjoying the beautiful beaches and coastal lifestyle that Mangawhai offers”, she said “There was a time when bachs were made of fibrolite, summer seemed to last forever and the footpath was so hot you could fry an egg on it!” Both the Coromandel and Northland regions have played a huge part in the inspiration of Sarah C artworks. Long summer days and relaxed beach living are common themes. With a vast diversity of media from indoor canvas pieces to outdoor corrugated iron and gloss panels there’s bound to be a place where Sarah C artworks will enhance your garden, fence, bach or home.

Our Bakery lies in the township on Mangawhai Heads. It offers the Mangawhai Heads community, and surrounding areas delicious affordable baked good, that will please anyones taste buds. With a Variety of freshly baked bread, pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches, pastries cakes and coffee to go there something for the whole family.

Sarah mainly sells her artwork through galleries and gift shops or via her website. The Sarah C Gallery space in Thelma Road South, Mangawhai Heads is an outlet for Sarah’s end of

“I was working 60 hours a week in consulting. I found I couldn’t do it anymore.” When she started looking for an escape, the choice was right in front of her eyes. Her family had a bach in Mangawhai and Ms Vickers had been coming there for holidays for almost 20 years. “When I shifted the only toilet was a long-drop.” But she refused to let the lack of modern conveniences derail her dream for a more relaxed lifestyle. The long drop is long gone, replaced by Mangawhai’s controversial EcoCare sewerage scheme. “I live on the seafront. I love the sea. I love summer. I love the community — they are very helpful and nice. There are lots of things to do. I play bowls and do photography. I’m an abstract photographer. I don’t do people or landscapes.” But Ms Vickers admits she sometimes misses Auckland. “I do love Auckland. I miss the traffic and the hustle and the bustle.” But moving back to the big smoke is not an option. Ms Vickers’ husband Chris Allen also gave up his life as a lawyer to come to Mangawhai and is now working as a painter. And Ms Vickers’ 91-year-old mother-in-law lives with them and their eight cats.

Mangawhai can get pretty busy at the height of summer as holiday makers flock to the seaside town. But Ms Vickers is unconcerned. “The laughter, the fun and the running around is just wonderful. I love the influx.” She urges

those stuck in big-city traffic to consider a move to Mangawhai. “It’s the only area to move to, especially if you’re a golfer or an artist. There’s a gardening club, a book club and the cafes are wonderful.” 

M A U N G AT U R O T O

A ‘real kiwi town’

The first stop after turning left at Brynderwyn onto State Highway 12 is the historic farming centre of Maungaturoto. The hilltop village is steeped in history, with the Albertland settlers arriving over 150 years ago to colonise the bush-clad hills around the northern Kaipara Harbour. Last year saw the historic sesquicentennial milestone reached, with a complete makeover of the main street’s raised and terraced gardens, a new wharf, and of course a huge celebration in true, small-town New Zealand fashion. For the visitor, there are still old homesteads to discover, many perched on the Otamatea inlet from the main Kaipara harbour, and there are still cottages that were constructed from a single felled kauri tree. Kauri formed the backbone of early industry in the region, making way for agriculture in the present day. In a time before roads, the Kaipara Harbour itself was the superhighway of early trade, linking Maungaturoto’s bush camps and sawmills with Dargaville and Te Kopuru’s shipwrights and merchants, and all the way to Auckland via Parakai. The Maungaturoto Hotel is well worth a visit as the only public house in New Zealand to have been nearly lost at sea when it was barged across the harbour to it’s current site. A fierce argument between prohibitionists and thirsty local woodsmen and farmers made it all the way to parliament; the tavern was

shipped into place to meet a looming deadline from the strict licensing authority of the time. The town is picturesque — the result of those recent 150-year anniversary celebrations and a community supported beautification effort that has resulted in spectacular urban gardens. The social centre is undoubtedly the Maungaturoto Country Club in Bickerstaff road, with its associated sport and social connections. There’s also plenty for travellers to see, taste and discover, with a selection of eating places and a collection of shops to browse. Not only is this one small town the home of some of Northland’s most award-winning pies, it’s also the home of the region’s top barista, with a reputation for hearty and fresh meals across a variety of flavours and styles of cuisine. A regular market takes place, under the auspices of the very engaged, very enthusiastic Residents’ Association. Evenings spent enjoying a coffee or two and browsing through the fresh produce, preserves, arts and crafts here are redolent of a simpler time. A true community spirit permeates the town, as evidenced by their impressive ‘old fashioned’ school gala earlier this year, bands playing in the main room of

which many city acting companies would envy. Their memorable recent productions, complete with full custom sts, lighting and elaborate props, have included The Wind in the Willows, Annie, and an adaptation of the TV classic M.A.S.H. A well-appointed retirement village on the hilltop at the centre of town is run by the local community, and provides sweeping views across the green fields, down to the harbour inlet where the settlers came ashore one and a half centuries ago. Truly, the very model of a small Kiwi town — and a delightful place to visit. 

he result of agitation being conducted in Auckland against the granting of an accommodation license at Maungaturoto will be watched with interest. The protesting resolution which prefers a charge of bias against Mr. S. Hutchinson S.M. was passed in several churches.

Maungaturoto says the declaration, is a non-conformist settlement of nearly 40 years and has hitherto taken pride in excluding the sale of liquor from its neighborhood. The license was issued in lieu of one allowed to elapse at a place over three miles distant. From the Bench Mr. Hutchinson asked Rev Mr. Davidson if he drank lager beer, and being told by the witness that he did not and did not know what it was, Mr. Hutchinson retorted, “You do not know what life is if you do not know what lager beer is.”

The couple are born and bred Aucklanders. But sick of Auckland’s worsening traffic congestion and high property prices, they relocated to Kerikeri where they lived for around 12 years. However, being in Kerikeri meant they had a long way to travel to Auckland. Diana says they agreed they needed to live closer to Auckland. But it needed to have the advantages of small town living. “When Maungaturoto was first mentioned to us, we didn’t know where it was. We drove up here and the saw the potential.” They moved to Maungaturoto eight years ago and have never looked back. Diana says they like the Maungaturoto lifestyle. “You can go to the supermarket and not have to stand in line or drive around the block looking for a parking space. It’s a lifestyle that big cities can’t offer. It’s a totally different world.” Both Diana and Richard got involved in community activities. Diana is vice-president of the Maungaturoto

Residents’ Association. Both got involved in the beautification of Maungaturoto, with Richard doing much of the design work. Richard also did much of the redesign work for the Maungaturoto wharf prior to the town’s 150th celebrations in late 2013. “You couldn’t get involved like that in a big city,” says Diana. “We feel privileged we’ve been able to come here and make a difference.” Richard and Diana jointly run the Moore Fine Art School which holds regular classes and sessions in Auckland and Whangarei. But Diana says that only takes up about two days a week, leaving plenty of time to create and enjoy life. “In Maungaturoto you don’t have huge mortgages. You can afford to have a lifestyle.” The couple believe they’ve come to a district that’s moving in the right direction. “Maungaturoto and Kaipara have so much potential and we are really excited to be part of that.” 

Where history lives

Summertime is fun time at ‘The Village in the Valley’, Paparoa, on State Highway 12 at the top of the huge Kaipara Harbour, and a warm welcome also waits at nearby Matakohe and Tinopai. First off the rank is the renowned Pahi Regatta which always makes Anniversary Weekend a local sellout. The North Kaipara Harbour’s annual marine festival has been running since 1886 and it is still going strong. It has become a family day out to remember, combining the atmosphere of a carnival with a distinct maritime flavour. Meanwhile ever ything from photography to gardening and calfroping to sheep-shearing features in the North Kaipara A&P Show at the Paparoa showgrounds in early February. And don’t miss the farmers’ market every fortnight which brings great produce and a carnival atmosphere to town. The village boasts several bed and breakfast establishments, with a decided historical ambience and the area is rich in history, with the early settlers arriving back in the 1860s. A must see on any visit to Kaipara, is the world-renowned Kauri Museum at Matakohe, just eight kilometres west from Paparoa. The museum covers thousands of metres of space and houses the world’s greatest display of all things to do with the colonial kauri milling industry — a reminder of the

hardships, triumphs and tribulations of the European settlers who first came to these shores, lured by the tall timber. The museum has garnered numerous awards for its vivid portrayal of an industry which spanned not just Matakohe, but many of the other harbourside towns of the region. It is a popular destination, and as such, visitors are well provided for at the Gumdiggers Restaurant and nearby Matakohe House, with the latter offering fine dining as well as top class accommodation. There is also the spacious Top Ten Holiday Park. The area around the museum is now home to many lifestyle blocks, and the well-attended primary school is evidence of many young families now making their homes there and 20 minutes south from Matakohe is the seaside enclave of Tinopai, which swells tenfold with holiday makers, camping or enjoying lovely rental accommodations, for a summer of sea, sun, and fishing. The local school hosts a great fishing contest every January. All three of these towns are little gems, with views and attractions to reward your curiosity as you travel state highway 12 toward the west coast. 

RUAWAI

Kumara Capital of the world Literally translated from Maori, Ruawai means ‘two waters’ and refers to the nearby Northern Wairoa River and Kaipara Harbour. Sitting astride State Highway 12, it makes a convenient stop on the journey from Brynderwyn to Dargaville, offering shopping, excellent food and beverage outlets, and a number of small businesses. The township with a population of around 420 primarily serves the surrounding agricultural community which consists mainly of dairy and drystock cattle farming and kumara growing. Ruawai is the self-proclaimed ‘Kumara capital of the world’, as over 90% of the total New Zealand production of kumara comes from the Ruawai and Dargaville region. The rich floodplains of the Ruawai Flats are below sea level and the town is protected by a system of drains, canals, flood gates and stop banks, making it one of the best dairy pasture regions in New Zealand.

The town is well-served by the two schools (primary and college) and a new kindergarten which are all keenly supported by the community. Adult education is catered for through the high school and the community run Art Studio. There is enthusiastic participation in sporting activities with successful rugby and netball teams coming from Ruawai and surrounds. Being on the shores of the beautiful and abundant Kaipara Harbour means fishing is also a popular pastime and business activity. Ruawai is proud of its community organisations and the Ruawai Volunteer Fire Brigade, first organised in 1952, extends a standing invitation to all visitors to attend the weekly Friday night social evening at the station. Also popular are the bowling club, and the boat ramp, with access to great harbour fishing.  Read the newspaper online

DARGAVILLE

Looking north for a better life  by Andy Bryenton

It sounds like a big move from the bustling city of Christchurch to the quiet, semi-rural lifestyle of Dargaville — especially when your business is fashion. But recent arrivals to the main street of Dargaville, Simone Jefferys and her daughter Natasha are more than happy about shifting north to the banks of the Northern Wairoa. Well — to be a little more specific, to the even smaller, more rural town

of Kaihu, just northwest of Dargaville. Whichever way you slice it, that’s a long way from the ‘capital of the Mainland’, but Simone and her family are pleased with the friendly welcome they’ve received, both personally and in business.

Their store, the Witch Clothing Company, is an interesting twist on the traditional and much loved ‘op shop’ concept, with bales of handpicked clothing shipping in weekly to be snapped up by savvy shoppers. Some still have their original shop tags; others may be unwanted gifts or pre loved items. All, however, are interesting, in the same quirky way as the life-sized witch statue in their front window. A little out of the ordinary, and a concept which has made the new store

a hit with shoppers. “People are very friendly here,” says Simone. “The atmosphere is very different from that in Christchurch, far more laid back. “We’ve been able to really enjoy the place!” Would they or their family ever want to return to the big city life they have left behind to set up shop as main street retailers in the Kaipara? Natasha puts it best, perhaps — “I never want to leave!” 

Originally from West Auckland, but with strong ties to the Waipu area, she has spent many a summer visiting Northland and says moving to Dargaville with her eight-year-old twins, Sophia and Joseph, “just felt right.” “Joseph has a multitude of congenital issues and when the twins were two years old, I found out that he would need to be in a wheelchair long-term. I realised that our house in Te Atatu South wasn’t adequate and would not endure the onslaught of a young boy in a wheelchair. “Also, I wasn’t enjoying Auckland anymore and I was ready to make a move. Initially I started looking at properties in Waipu but it was in

Dargaville that I found what I wanted — a range of wheelchair-friendly, accessible homes, the hospital, with a helipad, a functioning airstrip and even by road, it is close enough to Auckland.” Erica says she wanted to create a better lifestyle for her kids and she has found that here. “It has a real sense of community and I was able to buy a very nice house which is both durable and spacious. I know all of my neighbours and now that summer is here, we’ll all be sharing each other’s fruit trees! “I’ve also been able to get involved with different entities, such as the Kauri Coast Promotions Society, and as the digital platform developer for KLTV, I get

Kaipara District Camp Grounds To All Kaipara District Council residents and ratepayers Last week was an important one for the Kaipara District. The long-awaited report from the Auditor-General into the Mangawhai community wastewater scheme was released. Kaipara District Council accepts full responsibility for the role previous councils played in the failings outlined in the report.

Taharoa Domain Kai Iwi Lakes Commissioners, on behalf of the Northland’s shining jewel. Come stay and play at Kai Iwi Lakes, Taharoa Domain, one of New Zealand’s best holiday spots. Only 3 hours from Auckland, 35 kilometres from Dargaville. Nestled amongst 538 hectares of premier recreation reserve with white sand, freshwater dune lakes renowned for their jewel-like beauty and clear waters. Perfect for a wonderful camping experience with the choice of two camp grounds located on the lake foreshore, both offering an ideal camping experience for tents, caravans or motorhomes. We are amazed that successive Councils simply failed to ask the common sense questions that might have stopped the widespread failings that occurred over a prolonged period of time. Previous Councils have failed their community at the most basic level. We are particularly disappointed about the year-on-year failings of Audit New Zealand between 2006 and 2009 which the OAG report itself describes as “sub-standard” and “inadequate”. On a positive note, Kaipara District Council is now a fundamentally different and vastly improved organisation. This was formally noted by the AuditorGeneral in her report. We have already addressed many of the issues outlined in the report, including boosting in-house expertise in community engagement, finance, engineering and project management. We have robust financial and other policies in place, have established an Audit and Risk Committee and have improved all record-keeping. We also have a work programme in place to systematically work through the remaining issues raised in the OAG report.

The Community Circus Teacher Training programme will take people through an eight week course, involving theory and practical exercises, and opportunities for trainees to put their new knowledge into practice by taking part in local events. Kumarani currently runs community programmes for individuals and groups, all ages and abilities. As popularity grows, so too does the need for more experienced volunteers and teachers. “This is something that we have been wanting to get off the ground for some time,” says Kumarani manager Jenny Huriwai. “And we now have for a need a stronger base of teachers, from which we can call on. “Over the coming months we have several events, such as the Northland Circus Festival, so if people are thinking that this may be something they would like to do, they can come along to an event and learn a little more about us.” The programme will run over a series of weekend and evening workshops and will involve training in the appropriate use of circus disciplines and the benefits of using social arts to engage with communities. “Kumarani ran a similar

programme in the past, which several of our volunteer teachers completed. It is really important that our teachers have the right knowledge, skills and confidence so that they can correctly support people in different disciplines.” People who are keen to participate in the Community Circus Teacher Training programme should send a letter of interest to admin@circuskumarani.co.nz explaining why they wish to be involved. Another exciting event for Kumarani in the new year will be the Northland Circus Festival 2015. The event will be held over two days, January 17 and 18, at Waipoua Forest Campground. “It’s basically two days of all-out circus fun with workshops and a gala show with local and international teachers and performers sharing their passion and experience.” People can pre-register for the festival by emailing Kumarani or purchase tickets at the gate. One and two-day passes and tickets for the evening show are available. Contact Waipoua Camping Ground to arrange a site or cabin. Kumarani will also run the Break-Away School Holiday Programme during the holidays. Spaces are still available. 

The riverside town of Dargaville is not short on inspiration when it comes to art. If it’s true, as the renaissance masters say, that great art is a mirror to nature, then our local artists have a fine reflection to work with indeed. There’s no shortage of local artistic talent here in Dargaville and surrounding areas. So when the call went out to establish an art association, a varied community of painters, sculptors, jewellery designers, fibre artists, potters, wood carvers, and photographers — to name but a few — banded together to bring their talents to the public in a vibrant new space. That place is the Muddy Waters Art Gallery, a home for creative visions spanning a multitude of mediums and styles. Unlike some art galleries, Muddy Waters is unique in that all the works on show are also for sale, allowing visitors to take a stunning piece of the the region with them when they leave. Exhibits are changed on a regular basis to keep this art space fresh and inviting — you’ll find that many folks like to pop in on a weekly basis to check out the latest offerings. And, there is always the hand-crafted cards and gifts for that special occasion. This creative and colourful addition to the township has established itself as the ‘place to bring your visitors to Dargaville’, providing a window on the beautiful environment which inspires

What are the locals saying about Flooring Xtra? “Would we recommend Lorraine and Gerrard to others? Most certainly! Their initial advice and patience while we were choosing the right carpet and vinyl for our new home was outstanding. Their workmanship proved to be excellent, and finished the house off beautifully. n the camps along the West Coast known respectively as Bayly’s, Chases, Maules and Mahuta Gorge, stretching at intervals for four miles southwards from Dargaville, there are now under canvas or in shacks, considerably more than 300 people. Grocers, butchers, milkmen and an enterprising Chinese man call regularly so that it is not surprising that the coast is each year, becoming a more popular holiday resort. Fish are plentiful. Quantities of mullet, flounder, sole, kahawai and herring are caught with nets and huge snapper weighing up to a dozen pounds are caught by line fishermen. Surf bathing is the “piece de resistance” of the day and as the tide goes out the whole camp will be found on the beach digging toheroa and the small fry paddling in pools or playing games or sliding down the sand hills.

It is the gateway to Ripiro Beach, New Zealand’s longest driveable beach, and is backed by high, golden sand dunes. The Kaipara coastline is a graveyard for ships with 113 wrecks recorded — and locals say the real figure is 153. The first shipwreck was the fully rigged, 550 tonne Aurora in 1840 and the last wreck was the yacht Aosky in 1994. The three-masted, French Man O’ War, L Alcmene, also met its fate at Baylys in 1851 and was found by local amateur historian and curator of Dargaville Maritime Museum, Noel Hilliam, in 1977. The many relics Noel salvaged from the wreck are now on display at

Dargaville Museum. A commemoration plaque has been erected at the lookout on the road to Baylys Beach. Another monument at Ripiro Beach commemorates the major tribal battle, which took place in 1807 at Moremonui, between local Ngati Whatua warriors and the invading Nga Puhi. It was the first time muskets had been used in tribal warfare and yet Nga Puhi, who had muskets, were brought down by the superior might of Ngati Whatua. Today, Baylys Beach is home to the Funky Fish — an iconic cafe, characterised by quirky sculpture and original art and Astronomy Adventures

BAYLYS BEACH HOLIDAY PARK

RIPIRO — an unexpected obser vator y housing the largest telescope in the North Island. There are also several accommodation options and abundant variety of attractions and activities. It’s no surprise that this coastal playground is a favourite spot for folks looking to make their home in the Kaipara, with classic baches intermingled with modern holiday and permanent homes. The Sunset West development overlooking the beach is proving popular with both retirees and families looking to relocate to the seaside, and Baylys Beach proves an affordable option compared to the often crowded and pricey east coast. Possible adventures include sand yachting, trail and quad biking, hang

gliding, jet skiing and surfing. People can also see the feeding holes of the endangered toheroa shellfish or enjoy surfcasting, netting for mullet and flounder or long lining. At low tide, green lipped mussels can be plucked from the rocks at Maunganui Bluff at the northern boundary of Ripiro Beach. Some of the best surf casting in the West is available right here, with plentiful fish just waiting for a baited hook. On a summer’s day, it’s common to see anglers relaxing on deckchairs in the distance, having staked out a claim on a choice stretch of sand. This sleepy holiday haven is the perfect spot for a getaway or a lifestyle change. 

TE KOPURU/POUTO

Pouto Peninsula has so much to offer  by Colin Patterson

Stretching 70km from Dargaville to the entrance of the Kaipara Harbour, the Pouto Peninsula is largely unknown to most visitors to the Kauri Coast. That’s probably because the area is so remote. There is only one road in and out, and a large section of that road is unsealed. Travelling south from Dargaville, you’ll reach the tiny hamlet of Aratapu, once a sawmilling hub, now famous for the quality of Texan cuisine and the warm welcome dished up by the local tavern! Travel on through Te Kopuru, once the most populous town in New Zealand and the site of the region’s first Victorianera hospital. Striking out west from this town, you’ll reach the sandstone cliffs and rolling surf of Glinks Gully, a popular fishing spot and holiday getaway. At its southern end — close to the harbour entrance — is the settlement of Pouto, with its marine hall and camp ground which is bustling over summer. If you travel 7km along the sand dunes west of the settlement, you come to Pouto Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1884 to guide ships through the treacherous entrance to the harbour. But with improved navigation tools and a decline in coastal shipping the lighthouse was no longer required

and it was closed in the 1950s. It was renovated in the early 1980s and is now New Zealand’s oldest wooden lighthouse. The Pouto Peninsula’s main industries are farming and forestry. The area’s sandy soils, dry summer weather and strong winds make farming a challenging occupation. But the peninsula’s farmers are a hardy bunch. The peninsula is also the site of Ripiro Beach, which at 90km long is New Zealand’s longest driveable beach. If you enter the beach at Baylys or Glinks Gully it is possible to drive all the way to Pouto. But before you try, here are some words of caution. It is best if your vehicle is four-wheel-drive. Check the weather and tides as the area is very exposed, conditions can change quickly and some parts of the route are tide dependent. Finally, fill up before you leave Dargaville. There are no petrol stations on the beach (or the peninsula), so running out of fuel can be quite embarrassing and costly. The Pouto Peninsula has a lot to offer. Take a trip and find out for yourself! 

There’s just so much to take in here in the Kaipara, from history to the wonders of nature, that it’s hard not to take a lot of new knowledge and experiences with you when you depart. But what about living here? What are the opportunities for education in this part of New Zealand — especially for kids growing up far from the big city with its perceived wealth of educational knowledge. The school system in the Kaipara spans preschool to secondary education, with many tertiary programmes operating here as well.

You’ll find community-supported and vibrant early childhood learning centres in even the smallest towns, leading on to a network of small, well-resourced primary schools with a great teacher to student ratio. Secondary schools, such as Dargaville High School in the west and Otamatea High School in the east provide a wealth of classes and programmes, from core disciplines through to film making, arts, and a strong sporting ethos across all codes. Of course, with the advent of broadband internet spanning the region,

correspondence and online education are just a click away. Town libraries and award-winning museums charting the unique history of the region offer the opportunity to learn more about the Kaipara’s roots. And most importantly of all, an education here in the Kaipara region is one based in a beautiful natural environment, with ample opportunities to experience the greatest ‘classrooms’ of them all — the forests, open spaces, lakes and beaches which teach their own lessons about nature and our place in the world. 

Varied role for country GP Doctor Neil Anderson trained as a GP in the Highlands of Scotland, but he feels right at home half a world away in Wellsford. His rural practice is the first port of call for families in the east of the Kaipara, and as such Neil’s days are never boring! “My family and I made a lifestyle choice to come to work in New Zealand,” he says. “Coast to Coast Healthcare was the most interesting and progressive model which fitted my ideals of primary care and rural work. For 3–4 days I’m based at Maungaturoto, with a day at Mangawhai and Wellsford including the after-hours. I also have a long-term commitment working alongside Lynne and Helen at Maungaturoto and Dr Diane Hodges

at Mangawhai.” All of this makes for a busy and varied schedule, keeping three small communities healthy and happy. Working with the local Trust in Paparoa, this year has been a year for expansion, with the medical centre growing to offer even more space and more facilities for patients. Despite being a long way from the bright lights of Auckland, the Kaipara is well served by dedicated medical professionals like Dr Anderson, who offer 21st century medicine alongside a friendly, old-fashioned approach to care. Wellsford Medical Centre includes after hours, open daily from 8am till 8pm with a 24/7 on call service. Contact us via email admin@ ctchc.co.nz.

Wishing you a Merry and Healthy Christmas

Retirement means rest and relaxation here  by Andy Bryenton

After the hustle, bustle, traffic and pressures of inner city life, taking a vacation in the Kaipara district can seem like a literal breath of fresh air. John and Margaret first came to the Kaipara on holiday, and when the opportunity to move here presented itself they were attracted by the unique Riverdale surroundings. Close to amenities such as a medical centre and supermarket, but also near to the great outdoors, this seemed the right place to relax and enjoy those 65-plus years. “For what you get, it’s about one third the cost of Tauranga,” says John, seated on the sunny porch of his new home. “I like the city in small doses — but we’re delighted to be here!” It’s the same for many of the other folks who call Riverdale home — a real home, with cats curled up on the hoods of cars, new planter boxes filled with flowers on this late spring afternoon, and a sense of being apart from the nearby town, even though shopping and entertainment (including a cinema, cafes and restaurants) are just a few minutes away. “I doubt if you’d ever regret it!” say the Rigbys, when asked what they would tell anyone looking to move to Riverdale from outside of the district. “Or, indeed, if you’d ever find much better!” 

But what if the ties of work and family no longer hold you to the city or its suburbs? Is it possible to make a clean break from the ‘big smoke’ and settle into comfortable retirement so far from the perceived advantages of metropolitan living? John and Margaret Rigby certainly think so — they are enjoying the move they’ve made from the bustling Bay of Plenty city of Tauranga, and say that if they could go back and do it all again they would definitely still choose their tidy, quiet cottage in Dargaville’s Riverdale village. Worlds apart from the high-density ‘old folk’s villages’ of Orewa and greater Auckland, this is more of a planned community, comprised of colonial style individual homes. The big difference — the parklike grounds are tended by professionals, who also take care of all external maintenance. Small in size and tightly knit socially, the Riverdale community enjoys the use of a modern hall and the pleasant surroundings of the town’s edge, with river views just a short walk through the blossoming gardens in springtime.

These cottages are exclusively designed for modern day living, with security, independence and companionship. Two good sized bedrooms with floor to ceiling wardrobes. Wet area shower. Internal access garage, fully fenced with automatic door opener. Doors open out onto sheltered decking from main bedroom & dining area. The community hall has all different facilities for the residents to use, e.g. TV, internet access, library, indoor bowls, games, crafts, kitchen facilities and BBQ area. The cottages are fully insulated with upstairs storage and front and back verandahs.

Guarding Kaipara’s health At the heart of health services in the Kaipara is the Dargaville Hospital and the Medical Centre where a variety of health providers and dedicated staff work together for the good of the community. While we focus today on healthier living, eating fresh food and exercising regularly, Dargaville is still a good place to be ill. The services are excellent. The Medical Centre provides a seven-day service including public holidays plus an urgent on-call, privately paid, after hours service. “For New Zealand residents it currently costs $17.50 to see a doctor for a normal consultation when you are registered with the Dargaville Medical Centre,” said Dargaville DMC Manager Judy Harris “Our blood tests and X-rays are usually free. If people are in need of more intensive care the hospital is staffed with highly trained nurses with all the equipment and resources they

require. In the event of an emergency, the rescue helicopter is only a phone call away.” Children under 13 received free health care in Northland six months ahead of the government’s recent initiative, thanks to collaboration and funding from Northland’s primary health organisations. Plans are underway to include a pharmacy to the medical complex, which also includes public nurses, mental health services, social workers and Maori health care under Te Ha Oranga. Thanks to equipment purchased by the community, locals can now sit in Dargaville and have a consultation with a specialist sitting in Whangarei. “Two dedicated organisations can assist

CEO, Debbie Evans. “Our community has always been passionate about our hospital and primary healthcare services and will do what it takes to retain services locally.” Dargaville Health providers this year launched the ‘Shared Care Record’ which is intended to share relevant health information between core providers. “With the shared record, a pharmacy can prepare medications more quickly and with more certainty on how to best meet your health needs,” said pharmacist Marcus Liddell. 
