The parade was kicked off by the Tongan Brass Band from Auckland and a surprise flash mob of ukulele players. Carlrine took out the Pacific Motor Group Official of the Year, and Emma was named the Steinlager Pure Northland Sportswoman of the Year as well as winning the Parafed Award in the ASB Code Awards earlier in the evening. Emma became a household name when she won silver in the threekilometre individual pursuit on the track, bronze in the road race, placed fourth in the one-kilometre time trial on the track and placed fourth in the 30-kilometre time trial on the road during the Rio paralympics. “The CSG Konica Minolta Northland Sports Awards was a great night honouring many athletes including the Olympians and Paralympians who were in attendance,” said business development manager Colleen Atchison. Carlrine is the technical committee convenor for Swimming Northland and

was selected by Swimming New Zealand and Paralympic New Zealand to attend a two-day International Paralympic Committee Technical Official Training in Singapore. She then went on to officiate at the eighth ASEAN Para Games in Singapore and became the fourth NZ IPC qualified official, and now the only one in New Zealand. She also officiated at the New Zealand Open Water Championships, the New Zealand Zonal Championships, Junior Championships, Open Championships and the Oceania Championships in Fiji. Other Kaipara wins included Israel Tahere for his leadership in the Northland Club Premiership competition for a number of years whilst Kaipara Sportswoman of the year for 2015 Aleisha-Pearl Nelson received the ASB Code Award in the Rugby Union female category. 

What does it mean? This edition of the Kaipara Lifestyler carries a public notice that states: ‘Te Uri O Hau Taumata Kaunihera endorses the placing of a rahui on the Kaipara Harbour within Te Uri O Hau statutory boundaries for the period of 14 days from Saturday November 26 to the December 10’. The retrospective period covers comprehensive fishing activity on the harbour and is inclusive of December 10, the date of the King of the Kaipara fishing contest. However, traditional and contemporary sources have indicated that such a rahui is inappropriate in view of the Francie tragedy taking place outside the Kaipara Harbour boundaries, and in view of the recovery of all eight bodies from the disaster on the south-west Tasman coast. These sources have asked not to be identified for social and cultural reasons. It is however understood that the King of the Kaipara contest will continue as planned. At the time the Lifestyler went to press, Te Uri O Hau's Sesha Perkinson advised “I will be contacting the fisheries today with the approved resolution by the Taumata Kaunihera of Te Uri O Hau Settlement in order to validate the rahui.” Trying to sort out your dental hygiene appointment before Christmas? Our friendly hygiene team is working hard and appointments are filling up fast. Call today to book your appointment.

Under the Fisheries Act 1996, it states: 'Before putting a temporary closure or method restriction in place the minister must consult with representatives of all those that have an interest in the fishery. This may include environmental, commercial, recreational and local community interests as well as tangata whenua. 'The minister must provide for the input and participation of tangata whenua in the decisionmaking process and have particular regard to kaitiakitanga (the ethic of guardianship in accordance with tikanga Maori). This means that the Minister of Fisheries will need to work closely with the tangata whenua when making a temporary closure or method restriction’. At press time, MPI had not responded to requests for clarification of the Te Uri O Hau rahui ‘endorsement’.

Tavern twilight markets

 by Ann Morgan

The annual Ruawai Rose Show was held recently with growers displaying more than 80 rose blooms for judging.

The Mangawhai Tavern Garden Bar will turn into a bustling twilight market place most Friday nights during the summer season starting Friday, December 9 from 5–8pm.

“The show has been going for more than 50 years and after all this time we still have a lot of entries,” said Ruawai Garden Club’s Noeline Gatehouse. “There was a good display of roses and cut flowers, even with the bad weather we have had up until now.” The Champion Bloom was won by Nadia Ambler from Dargaville. “Nadia had a lovely rose bloom. “The tavern is such a beautiful location and the only venue on the estuary in Mangawhai. We wanted to use it to make the most of doing something at night which people can do as a family,” said market manager Caro Rae. “It is a perfect setting that was waiting to be used for something when there are no concerts on at the tavern. $80 shareholder reward to every Northpower consumer Every Northpower electricity consumer in Kaipara and Whangarei districts is to receive $80 from the Northpower Electric Power Trust. 57,000 people in Kaipara and Whangarei will receive a total of more than $4.5 million with the Trust distribution appearing as a credit on December or January power accounts. In total, the Northpower Trust has given almost $100 million to Northpower consumer shareholders.  Former Dargaville High School Student Andrew McLaren will work alongside some of the best supercar engineers

His daughter and brand ambassador for McLaren Automotive Amanda McLean says she is ‘delighted’ the company is able to assist Andrew to further his education. “Even though my father passed away many years ago, the connection between McLaren and New Zealand remains very strong and the parallels in both of their early careers is especially poignant.” 

Helping the SPCA  by Ann Morgan

Mangawhai Beach School student Xarie Manwaring has collected donations for the Whangarei SPCA to help them over the summer period because she believes animals are very important. “I really love animals and did a course at the SPCA. I saw how hard they work and they are really dedicated to their jobs. It is a really good cause so I decided I could help them,” said Xarie. “I talked to our principal Mr Kemp and arranged a mufti day, and we put a box outside the school office to collect food or old blankets for the animals.” This year Xarie’s efforts raised $420 and more than 60 cans of food

NEW ZEALAND FIRST

and other items. “The SPCA were very thankful and said Christmas and summer are the busiest times for them.” Xarie would like to remind pet owners to take care of their animals. “Animals love you as much as you love them. If you are going to adopt a pet, it would be good to go to the SPCA and give one of the animals a home.” Xarie leaves the school next year and another student is going to carry on the legacy.

“Pippa is five years old and is taking over with her mum. “It is really nice that the collection will keep going.” The Whangarei SPCA were blown away by the kindness and generosity of Xarie and her fundraising efforts. “We are so delighted, it is wonderful to see young people who have a passion and commitment for things like this,” said Sue McDonald SPCA centre promotions.

Former Dargaville High School student Andrew McLaren has struck it lucky with an internship offered by United Kingdom supercar maker McLaren Automotive. Andrew was born and raised in Dargaville and attended Dargaville High School before beginning his studies at the Faculty of Engineering at Auckland University. He is now into his third year of a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics which is the study of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. The internship will see him spend nine weeks at the McLaren Technology Centre in the UK where he will work alongside research and development engineers. “I can’t wait, it’s a field that is very hard to get into because there is very little opportunity in New Zealand, so I thought I would never get a chance like this,” Andrew said. Andrew is especially interested in the research and development work the company is doing to reduce their carbon footprint. “I would love to be at the forefront of that kind of innovative thinking, I’d really like to do something that would benefit society,” Andrew said. The McLaren brand is known for producing high performance sports cars and international car racing. The company was founded by champion grand prix driver Bruce McLaren (no relation) in 1963, who was an engineer, innovator and inventor. He also studied at Auckland University before travelling to England on a similar ‘Driver to Europe’ scholarship and then founding his own company. Bruce was killed in 1970 whilst testing one of his cars in England at the age of 32.

Spokesman Steve Macmillan says the distribution is courtesy of a shareholder dividend paid by Northpower to the Trust. “Northpower consumer shareholders will receive the credit no matter which electricity retailer they are with.” The distribution coincides with the announcement of the Northpower Trust line-up following Trustee elections which are held every three years. Erc Angelo and Richard Drake have been re-elected Chairman and Deputy Chairman respectively. They are joined by incumbent trustees Ross Provan, Bill Rossiter, Irene Durham and Sheena McKenzie and newcomer Paul Yovich. Mr Angelo says the appointment of Paul Yovich follows the retirement of Tony Davies-Colley after two terms as a trustee. “I want to thank Tony for his valuable input and contribution over the past six years and welcome Paul to the role of Trustee,” says Mr Angelo. “The Trustees have a significant role over the next three years in ensuring we support the Northpower company Board Chair and Directors with such a fast changing electricity sector and the opportunities that could well arise around ultra-fast broadband, EVs and other technologies. “Following the appointment of two additional Directors due to join the Board from February 1, 2017, the Trust is very confident that we have the Board members in place to provide the leadership required to successfully continue operating Northpower and Northpower Fibre businesses - and to embrace the exciting challenges that the future will provide.” The new Director appointees, Phil Hutchings and Laurie Kubiak, will bring a wealth of international contracting and commercial innovation experience.

Keeping the Kaipara healthy

The Dargaville Arts Association performing arts division is holding a fundraising concert to raise money for local blind cricketer Ming Ming Edgar to help him get to India for the T20 Blind Cricket World Cup next year.

 Ming Ming Edgar blind cricketer with his adopted mother Gaynor

The musical afternoon will include a special appearance from guitarist and singer Tracey Haskell who is originally from New Zealand but has been living in Darwin. She will be supported by a selection of other local talent such as Take 5 and the Rivertown Singers. Organiser Allan Mortensen encourages everyone to attend and support Ming Ming in his sporting endeavours. “Come along and enjoy a Sunday afternoon of acoustic music. If you have a pulse you’ll have a great time,” he said. Ming Ming has been playing cricket for nearly two and a half years and has

been selected for the New Zealand Blind Cricket team. He is in the category of B1 which is for totally blind players. Seventeen players have been chosen from teams across New Zealand to represent the country, and they will go on to compete against 10 other countries in New Delhi and Bangalore. The concert will be held at the Commercial Hotel in Dargaville on December 18 at 2pm. Entry is $10. Seats are limited so getting a ticket early is advisable. Tickets available at the Muddy Waters Gallery, The Kaipara Lifestyler and the Dargaville Music Shop. 

Te Ha Oranga has 11 registered nurses, 10 of which have been audited and are now independent vaccinators with one waiting to be audited. Now all community health workers hold their level four CPR certificates and both the Dargaville and Wellsford sites have immunisation fridges. “It is really nice to know that we have made a significant difference to the statistics for the Kaipara region and it was a nice acknowledgement

of the work that my team have put in over the last year,” says Ms ZielinskiToki. She says she was motivated by wanting to help the community, to upskill her nurses and to bring immunisation back to Te Ha Oranga as the organisation had stopped providing it. Dargaville Medical Centre also received a highly commended Auaha Award for Innovative Practice for their cervical screening programme in the 2016 Primary Care category. 

Christmas tree display back  by Ayla Miller

The Northern Wairoa Lions Club are organising their much anticipated Christmas Tree display at the Lions clubrooms. The club have been running the display for the past seven years but took a break last year. Chairperson of the NW Lions Club projects committee Lyn Trounson says they will be back in full Christmas spirit this year after having a number of enquiries by members of the public about this part of the Dargaville Christmas tradition. The event has always been a major fundraiser for the club and Lyn says this money goes back into the community. “We decided to do this display because there was nothing else like it around Dargaville. We thought it would be nice to have something people could bring their family to see.” Santa will also take time out of his  busy schedule on the Saturday where Christmas gift requests can be made direct between 10–12pm. Funds raised through the Northern Wairoa Lions Club can be used to help charity organisations such as the Child Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer Foundation, Daffodil Day and local primary school prize givings. Smiles for partner family

Accolades for kindergarten

 by Ayla Miller

 by Ayla Miller

There were plenty of smiles and a few happy tears as the seventh Habitat for Humanity partner family and Sanitarium volunteers set to work on the latest home in Plover Close, Dargaville.

Ruawai Kindergarten have been presented with a bronze award for their efforts in the Enviroschool programme just over one year after joining the initiative.

 Sanitarium staff volunteers, Habitat for Humanity team members and partner family get stuck into sweat equity for the seventh Dargaville Habitat for Humanity home

Demalza and her daughters, 14-yearold Layla and five-year-old Shakeisha, have been living in less than desirable rental properties and said it was ‘the best feeling in the world’ to know that they would soon have a warm, dry, healthy home to call their own. “I couldn’t believe this could happen to me,” said Demalza. “It has always been a dream of mine to own my own house and I am humbled by the support Habitat for Humanity have given to me.” She and her two daughters along with eight product development staff from Sanitarium worked on the house last week to build a fence, a deck and a

carport. Product development manager Chris Stanbridge says she and her team have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the partner family. “It gives us great insight and we get to develop a relationship with the family.” The house was built in Auckland by Onehunga High School students and transported to Dargaville. The home will be completed by Dargaville High School Building Academy students. Tutor Tim Pratt says this experience is invaluable for his students and he thanks the community businesses who have supported them by donating materials and expertise. 

 Ruawai Kindergarten pupils, teachers and Northland Regional Council representatives proudly display their award

There are currently almost 1,000 schools participating in the programme throughout New Zealand which supports children and young people to learn and practise sustainable actions. Head teacher Teresa Robertson says receiving the Bronze award is encouraging, as although the school were already practising and teaching sustainability, they only officially joined the Enviroschool programme in late 2015. “Enviroschools is about teaching our children how to live sustainably and embracing our place as New Zealanders,” says Teresa. “It is

important to start this education young so the children can gain the essential skills for life. We are fortunate to have a community that is very supportive. We are role modelling a sustainable lifestyle and learning what is important. The award is great recognition for our hard mahi [work].” Nor thland Regional Council councillor Rick Stolwerk presented the award and said he hoped the children would take what they had learned at kindergarten home to their parents. “You can tell them you learnt about making the world and environment a better place,” he told the children. 

Positive start for electrical specialist  by Andy Bryenton

Just in time for the summer, there’s new help on hand for those with auto electrical issues, and the need for all-important automotive air conditioning. Skilled and qualified auto electrical technician Sanjesh Lal offers all this and more at his new premises next door to Dargaville’s BP service station on Victoria Street — under the banner of Advance Auto Services. It’s been a long road from his original home on the tropical island of Vanua Levu to the banks of the Northern Wairoa, but along the way Sanjesh has seen all kinds of vehicles and studies to build up a comprehensive toolkit of skills under

the hood. Following his calling to the trade, Sanjesh left the town of Labasa to study at the University of Fiji, completing his course and then moving on to an apprenticeship with the Drive Smart company, a local leader in the field. As the biggest importer of Japanese cars in that part of the world, Drive Smart presented the young auto electrician with a massive range of challenges, getting acquainted with all the big brands we also drive here — from Honda Civic

 Sanjesh Lal has 11 years of experience fixing all manner of auto-electrical problems

runabouts to hard-working Toyota Land Cruisers and more. Striking out on his own, Sanjesh put that knowledge to work in his own business, managing his own workshop for seven years before making the decision to come to New Zealand — where we need skilled auto electrical technicians to keep our own fleet on the road. After arriving with his family Sanjesh worked for local company DAE, but has now once again struck out on his own, offering a comprehensive and competitively priced auto electrical service in his new location. AUTO AND MARINE

Green light for expansion plans  by Andy Bryenton

It’s been a big year for the Ford brand in general, with sporting victories and top-selling models capturing headlines and favourable reviews worldwide. In our little corner of the globe it’s been no different, with Dargaville Ford now looking for ways to expand their presence and their ability to look after the region’s motoring public. Following a very successful year for the Ford Ranger ute, Dargaville Ford’s recent Ranger reunion event saw an impressive line of the light commercials all the way up Normanby Street. It would appear that this vision is more than a little bit prophetic, as this is just how the expanded yard and forecourt of the local Ford dealer may look in the not too distant future. Lindsay West and his team are moving in to the space lately occupied by the old Mitre 10 buildings, next door to their overflowing display area, allowing easier access to their fleet of new and used vehicles — and a better way to show them to the passing public. Long unoccupied or sparsely used, the Mitre 10 complex will be completely demolished and removed to make way for this new development. In addition to providing a wide-open forecourt with

the potential for a wider range of cars and utes on display, this will also create easier access to the sales office, parts department and the workshop area. Work is set to begin in the new year transforming this corner space into Ford country! It couldn’t come at a better time for the Dargaville Ford team, who have enjoyed a stellar year, not just with the success of the Ranger but across the board. New car sales are at a record high, and a look through the order book on Lindsay’s desk reveals that Fords are rolling out to all points of the compass from this provincial dealership — as far away as the west coast of the south island! With new models arriving for 2017 and a big new expansion to show them off in the best possible way, next year may end up being even better still. 

We are seeking an industrious reporter with community curiosity and a flair for writing stories about people and places. Today’s electronically generated information systems have lost the plot when it comes to dealing with community news, which requires some old-fashioned journalism from a people person with a contact book, a camera, and a nose for news that doesn’t necessarily involve chasing fire engines.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS. If you want to drink, that’s your business - if you want to stop, maybe we can help. Meeting: Mondays & Thursdays. Phone 09 439 5248 or ladies call 09 946 5775.

What is going on in local sport, in school activities, clubs, associations and drama clubs?

SEE YOU at the Movie Poster Sale at the Town Hall this Friday and Saturday,

What’s new in town - is that a new and innovative business enterprise? And what is local government doing? Who is that local achiever? The list is endless. Call it grass roots stuff, and you’d be quite right. But these sources produce stories that matter to the community you’ll serve. If this sounds like you, and you have your eye on a really satisfying career with loads of opportunity contact us.
