Ladies dominate King of the Kaipara by Paul Campbell Persistence paid off for the Chamberlain family from Tangaihi when they walked away with the big prize in the annual King of the Kaipara fishing contest at Kelly’s Bay last weekend. It was also a day for the ladies, with Cathy Chamberlain winning first prize for the heaviest trevally with her 3.84kg catch, while Therese Carstle with her 6.93kg fish took out the heaviest snapper. And to top things off, Cathy’s son Hayden came home from Auckland for the contest and joined in a family celebration “with a little champagne” on Saturday night as ‘King of the Kaipara’ for catching the heaviest kingfish. “We have been in the contest every year since it started 23 years ago,” said Cathy. “But we have always been bridesmaids, and never the bride. This year was really special. Hayden came up from Auckland for the weekend, and took the title, and I caught my big trevally surf-casting of the beach around the corner from Pouto. I guess as a family, we just love our fishing.” So much so that husband Neil is a commercial fisherman, and Cathy runs their fish and chip caravan business in Dargaville. Contest organiser, Mike Nola, said numbers were a little down on last year, but there were 170 ticketholders out on the beach or the water. They were vying for $12,000 in prizes, so we didn’t actually break even. “It was a little blustery at the end of the day but it was a great event and, well — a bit of a bonanza for the ladies. We are now looking forward to next year’s contest.”

Property values plunge in the Kaipara by Paul Campbell The truth of the effects of recession has hit home to property owners across Kaipara with the release of the latest QV valuations. Ratepayers across the district have received notices that show a marked decline in values, reflected in an an analysis which shows Kaipara has shed $1.1 billion in overall capital value compared to the last survey in 2008. Paparoa, Pahi and Tinopai have taken a heavy hit with the largest decrease in residential land values and the west coast

also had a slightly bigger decrease in values compared to the remainder of the district. QV Team Leader, Brett Halliday, says larger percentage decreases are reflected in the traditionally higher valued properties. He added that in other findings from the valuation review, “developers are experiencing drastically reduced sales volumes and are offloading vacant sites at discounted rates in order to reduce holding costs. continued on page 6 . . .

Just in time for uni by Joanne Speechly Dargaville couple David and Anna Marie Cutts have created a global website, www. studentspreunited.com, aimed at students who are about to embark on tertiary study. The site is a social networking forum designed so that people can make friends with their future university peers before the next semester actually starts. “The whole idea is that people can go to Students Preunited, enter the uni that they’ll be attending and it will help them find other people enrolled on the site who are attending the same uni,” says Anna Marie. “Basically you get to meet your mates that you’ll be at university with before you actually arrive — hence Students Preunited. “Our oldest boy went to uni last year and only knew one other person from Dargaville who was David and Anna Marie Cutts with their daughter Shannon studying at Waikato and she was doing a completely different course. Get your shears ready by Joanne Speechly

Tangiteroria Tavern Speed Shearing Competition 2011, is on this Saturday, December 10, offering an exciting line-up of events

The event is a first for tavern proprietors, Sheryl Harrison and Keary Stuart, and it is about ten years since a comparable competition has been held in Dargaville. The competition came about after local shearers, Mike Stephens and Neville Osborne, suggested the idea to Sheryl and Keary. The date was confirmed only a month ago, so it has been a busy time of preparation and planning. “It’s been a crazy time but so far so good and we’ve had some awesome sponsorship from local people and businesses,” says Sheryl. “It looks like it will be huge, with people travelling from Hastings and Kaitaia.” The evening’s events start at 7pm, with four shearing classes — Open, Old Timers, Seniors and a Novelty Challenge. There will also be a host of on-the-night competitions, with spot prizes and the first ever Tangi Tavern versus the Ab Fab Tokatoka Bar and Café Shearing Challenge. “Richard Drake, a top sheep farmer, is sponsoring the sheep and they are known to shear really well and they’re farmed well too. There’s a lot of prep work that the guys will put in, shearing the sheep bellies and also crutching them before the speed shearing takes place.

The pre-consultation process is not a requirement under legislation but it gives Council food-for-thought when compiling the draft Long Term Plan and gives the ratepayer the ability for their ideas to be considered. Generally there has been little interest in the pre-consultation round and last year only 35 responses were received. This time around the Council has been

proactive with its “Get Involved” campaign and it appears to have worked. “It’s giving us ideas about what people might like to see in the next Long Term Plan,” said Corporate Services Manager, Barbara Ware. “Effectively, the pre-consultation process is about saying to people, “What do you want the Kaipara to look like in ten years’ time? Give us your comments about what you think needs to happen or be implemented?” Ms Ware added that the draft Long Term Plan would be formally consulted on and there is a legislative requirement to do this.

Images from Albertland William Harold Marsh, farmer, father, early Albertlander and adventurous photographer captured a time of enchantment, when life was lived at a slower pace and governed by a different set of values, priorities and ambitions. This landmark commemorative book by Paul Campbell tells the story of the Albertlanders’ arrival and settling of the Kaipara area, and features many of Harold Marsh’s photographs that have been painstakingly restored.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’. could supply 800,000 plug-in electric vehicles. This is nonsense. Wind generation is unpredictable and electric cars must be charged every day. So additional — probably gas-fired — generation would be needed and this is likely to supply more than half the power needed by the electric vehicles.” “The report . . . makes no allowance for the fact that over peak demand periods, only about 10% of the wind generation can be relied on. It also does not consider the need for extra transmission lines and the poor efficiency of the gas fired power stations that must be built to back up wind.” “Wind is expensive, requires backup, and has only a small effect on reducing emissions of carbon dioxide–which is, in any event, an entirely beneficial gas that causes plants to grow,” Mr Leyland concluded. And, for this writer at least, having noted a wind farm in California shuts down for bird migration, suggests heads must be scratched over protecting the Kaipara’s epic godwit migrations, if a project happens for Pouto.”

Last week coalition energy commentator, Bryan Leyland, said a report issued by the New Zealand Wind Energy Association claiming that New Zealanders could be $390 per annum better off with 20% wind energy is riddled with flaws. “More revelations are coming out about the dubious science behind the whole global warming myth and, with economies all over the world in serious trouble the prospect of them saddling their consumers and industries with carbon charges is decreasing rapidly. The world has not warmed the last 10 to 15 years and it is almost certain that the world has entered a sunspot driven cooling period. “The next dubious assumption is that they assume gas will increase to $17 per gigajoule. In the USA (and soon in Europe and the UK) gas prices are falling rapidly due to the development of shale gas which has massively increased reserves. Even if there were no more gas discoveries in New Zealand, we could import liquefied natural gas for less than $17/gj,” said Mr Leyland. “Finally, they assume that wind generation

The vexed question of power generation by Paul Campbell The Crest Energy undersea power turbine project for the Kaipara Harbour entrance has faded from the headlines somewhat, no doubt as the boffin’s study how to actually make such a project work. However, project opponents support a proposed Pouto wind farm as a better way of electricity production that is in sympathy with the environment. But there is a growing concern over whether wind-power is viable in the long run. The Internet bristles with statistics for and against wind turbines. For instance, one site claims that according to recent estimates, there are currently 14,000 abandoned wind farms dotting the landscape across the United States. In California, one site is shut down four months out of the year to protect migrating birds. Wind power has proven to be unreliable as a consistent source of power. There’s either too little wind — or too much. But much closer to home, the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition has taken issue with wind power claims.

DAA members are excited and love the new venue, which has an outside area where garden art can be displayed. The gallery includes a wide range of artwork, including jewellery,

Property values plunge in the Kaipara “Record high milk solid prices have had no major impact on the dairy farm market, (but reflect) a positive future for the industry.” He also noted there have been only minor adjustments to commercial and industrial values over the past three years, and that the property market has been static for more than a year with sales volumes remaining low. “Unfortunately we are still in or coming out of, depending who you talk to, a major recession that saw the value of everything dive including land prices. What people were prepared to pay three years ago for a piece of land and what they are prepared to pay now for that same piece is considerably less.” First National Real Estate’s Jill Wilson says the valuations really just reflect the state of the current property market. “Residential property is selling about 15 per cent below government valuation and in the lifestyle and pastoral areas we are looking at 25 per cent. The valuations show the property market pretty much as it stands.”

Kaipara District Council corporate services manager, Barbara Ware, says while council will be reviewing it’s rating policies as part of the Long Term Plan, there’ll be no immediate change. “Council needs to collect a certain sum of money to be able to operate and this is distributed across those paying rates according to the rating value. Whether the rates a particular ratepayer pays moves up or down or stays the same following a revaluation is dependent on relativity. “That is if your property valuation goes down by 20% as the result of a revaluation and all the other rateable properties suffer an average drop of 20%, then there is likely to be no change in the amount of rates you pay. It is all about averages as to whether your rates go up, down or stay the same after a revaluation. A lot too is dependent on a council’s rating policies and whether they change or not. This council will be reviewing its rating policies as part of the Long Term Plan process.”

Summer fun at the pool by Joanne Speechly Summer has arrived and Kauri Coast Community Swimming Pool is ready for an action packed summer for young and old. New this year is Kidszone and returning after a year’s reprieve is the Swim Challenge to Wellington. Kidszone is an event dedicated to 7 to 16-year-olds and will be held every second Saturday between 6 and 8pm. Parents are welcome to come along but cannot swim and 7-year-olds require an adult to supervise. “We teach kayaking and rolling over and getting out of the kayak safely, the aquarun programme, water volleyball slippery slide, sausage sizzles — it’s a general fun time for kids to keep them busy and occupied on a Saturday night,” said customer service advisor, Sue Girven. “Each fortnight we’ll be adding different elements to the programme. On our first night, we had over 70 children through.” The Swim to Wellington Challenge started at the beginning of December and the idea is that swimmers record their swim time in an effort to

Gearing up for 2012 The Northland Field Days, 1-3 March, 2012 is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever. Known as ‘The Friendly Field Days’, and now in its 28th year, planning for the annual event starts before the last is even finished. With over 550 exhibitors and 25,000 visitors, the event is believed to be the second largest agricultural event in New Zealand, showcasing rural machinery, products and services to the rural market. Moving with the times, there are also activities and entertainment for the whole family, recognising that farming over the generations has changed and is more and more a family business involving dad, mum and the kids on a daily basis.

The 2012 event also has some new and exciting additions aimed at attracting even more visitors over the three days, this includes two major gate prizes, lifestyle and rural, with the chance to enter into the draw each day a visitor attends, just by collecting clues from specific sites. Sites for the 2012 event have been filling fast with both new and returning exhibitors, with the development of the site to encourage and cater for growth of the event. Some sites are still available. Gwenda Reid, Sales and Marketing Coordinator for the Northland Field Days says “Our sites range in size and price, we welcome and would be delighted to answer any queries.” “This year we are seeing businesses which have not previously exhibited booking sites to showcase their products or services” adds President Lew Duggan, “they believe the future is looking more positive for the agricultural sector and are being proactive in marketing what they have on offer.”

What a Character

9

by Joanne Speechly Dargaville’s, St Joseph’s Catholic School students and staff celebrated book week recently with a range of activities designed to encourage a love of reading. “The whole aim of Book Week is to encourage the children to read and increase their exposure to a wide variety of books,” said Principal Glenis Guest. Parents were invited to the school to read to students dressed in different costumes and teachers sported “silly glitter hats” when they read to their classes on a “drop everything and read” basis. Reading times occurred randomly throughout the day and Mrs Guest wore her hat to read the new children’s’ book ‘Grandma Joins the All Blacks’ to all the classes. “We also visited the library and had competitions including book reviews, book characters and photos of children reading in unusual places. One photo entry was a little girl dressed up as a lamb and reading in the dryer, others were kids hanging off the playground equipment.” A parade was held on the Friday, with staff and students dressed up as book characters. Book prizes were given out to the best or most innovative costume for a boy and girl in each class, along with spot prizes.

Local Innovation on track to Change the World! “During one of the wettest winters for several years and after six months without grading or any addition of metal, both test strips are still holding their surface shape and show only minor surface defects. To date, the Gravel Lock HSC has performed much better than any other commercially available dust suppression product I have seen, and it has the added advantage of being a potential remedy for corrugations and pot holing.” The future of road maintenance has arrived, courtesy of local ingenuity and a great idea followed through to its conclusion. Watch this space, because Gravel Lock may have just started a roading revolution!

Take a drive around Northland and you’ll find some of the most challenging roads in the world — both to drive and to maintain. Our weather, combined with the pounding which many of our rural roads take from heavy transport takes a toll on the gravel roads which form the web of our transport infrastructure... and it shows. Councils spend millions on the constant grading and maintenance necessary to keep these vital arteries open, but it’s sometimes a losing battle, with some roads losing their surfaces faster than they can be replaced. It took a group of local innovators to find a solution, and they’ve done so with a commendable spirit of Kiwi ingenuity and hard work. After two years of intensive trials and testing, Gravel Lock, a pioneering company out of Waipu, have patented a road building and maintenance system which is truly world beating — and which has seen big names both locally and internationally beating a path to their door. The concept is elegantly simple — a special blend that’s non toxic and can be mixed in with existing metal and then watered down to form a resilient, tightly bound pavement. The resulting mix sets fast — curing in a matter of hours — to become a high quality, hard wearing surface which can withstand all that the elements and human industry can dish out. The savings for anyone building, rebuilding or maintaining roads and access ways are

staggering. Consider the applications for forestry, where heavy vehicles and machines give ‘old fashioned’ roads a hammering. Farmers adopt this miracle technology to create durable driveways, tanker races, hard pads, feed pads and access ways. Even the mining and military sectors are keen to see what the innovative Waipu entrepreneurs are able to offer... and needless to say our elected officials are keen to reduce costs in maintaining rural roads, a large part of any council’s budget. That means two big advantages over traditional roadbuilding — time, and money. Conclusive tests — such as a long-term test at Spain’s Road in Awanui — show that Gravel Lock’s method drastically reduces washboarding, dust, and most importantly the necessity for alltoo-regular rebuilding of the gravel surface. Far North District Council Roads and Stormwater Infrastructure Manager Richard Green monitored the Spains Road trial — this is what he said about his findings —

Lambert — father and son

by Brian Eastwood When Vernon Gregory Lambert was appointed Dargaville Town Clerk he was following the same career path that his father had taken. Out of a population of just over one thousand, 398 voters had gone to the polls on Election Day to elect businessman Fred Day as the first Mayor by a tiny six vote margin. Vernon became the Borough Council’s first chief official when the town was declared a borough in 1908. Employed part time he was paid £50 a year. Born in 1877, he was a pupil at Dargaville Primary School. The family lived in Mangawhare and Vernon’s father, Matthew Gregory Lambert, took on the job of County Clerk for the Hobson County Council in 1898 for just one year. Six years later he took over the reigns again, serving as County Clerk until 1908. Matthew had applied for and had become the local area tax assessor of land values under the Land and Income Assessment Act. For that task he earned £55 for the year. Also working as returning officer for the Ordinary Licensing District of Kaipara, Matthew oversaw the 1903 election of five qualified people for the Licensing Committee of the district. For his full time day job son Vernon advertised as a ‘House, Land and Financial Agent’, trading from the Harding Building that we knew as the Foster’s Home Decorating that burned down in Victoria Street. He sold farms, houses and land all around Kaipara.

A rider’s fundraiser Members of the Kaipara Hunt and a wide range of riding enthusiasts have raised $10,000 from sponsorship and donations for Riding for the Disabled, from a trek through the Utakura Valley. The trek was inspired by an earlier event at Omamari Station, said organising spokesperson, Jeannie Hindmarsh. “On the weekend of November 26 and 27th, we held a fundraising trek for the Bay of Islands RDA, down in the Utakuru Valley west of Okaihau. Local farmers Ron and Brian Lewis kindly let us use their properties as our base with a woolshed with covered yards as our central point,” she added.

In his spare time he took over the duty of Honorary Secretary for the Hobson Acclimatisation Society and issued licences for the shooting season. Vernon married Maud Elizabeth Leach in 1906 and they were to have three sons. Reginald Vernon was the first born in 1907. Second son, Alan Dugard Lambert was born three years later but was killed in a motor bike accident in 1931. More misfortune struck the family when youngest boy Grenville Gregory, flying for the Air Force in British Overseas Airways Corporation as a third engineer, was killed in January 1943 during World War Two. He is buried in a British graveyard in Lisbon, Portugal. Vernon and Maud lived in Spring Street, Aoroa. Maud died in 1961, Vernon in 1964 aged eighty-seven and father Matthew Lambert in 1923. He is buried in the old Mt. Wesley cemetery.

“Volunteers from RDA did an amazing job of serving up meals to all our riders and we ended up riding over four different Lewis family farms. “In all, a 100 riders aged from six to in their 70’s came from as far as Rotorua and Tauranga for the Saturday ride and on the Sunday, a smaller group of 80 headed out on another circuit ride for three hours, climbing up on to high spots with amazing views out to Lake Omapere. “After all the positive feedback, we will definitely be holding another trek next year and are already thinking of a location to match this one.”
