The station, on Totara Street at the back of the BP service station was opened last week by deputy chairman for the Northland Regional Council Graeme Ramsey and a blessing ceremony was done by local Kaumatua Robert Sarich and Anglican deacon Bruce Goertz. “We would like to thank the Dargaville
community for allowing us to place a station here in town which lets us be a part of the community as electric car owners,” said ChargeNet CEO Steve West. “This particular station allows for rapid and standard charging. It provides electric vehicle owners access to tour

“I was delighted that people from other areas had noticed it and asked if they could borrow if for their parade. It is great to be able to share the Christmas spirit and work together with another community,” said Kumara Box owner Warren Suckling — also known as Ernie. “The Red Baron was built by Pat and Lynn Hannan for a Christmas parade about 10 years ago and was then stored in a shed. It accidently became a chook house and the Hannan’s wanted a better life for it. “Someone suggested here at the Kumara Box so it came down and got cleaned up and repainted and now it is often in photos at the Kumara Box Park, next to what we believe is New Zealand’s smallest church.” Snoopy’s plane was built by Craig Walker whose father was in the air force for many years based at Whenuapai. “The two planes came down in the parade together,” said Steven Theobald who cared for the Red Baron whilst it was in transit. “As the song goes, Snoopy had been sent to destroy the enemy, the Red Baron in World War II, but with ice on
his wings he got into trouble and the Red Baron could have destroyed him. “With Christmas bells tolling below asking for peace throughout the land, he instead made Snoopy fly to the Rhine and land. Snoopy thought this was his end but the Red Baron called out ‘Merry Christmas my friend’. “He then offered a holiday toast and as they flew off they knew one day they’d meet again.” ¢
Steve said he has been travelling the North educating people on the advantages of electric cars. “The vehicles are certainly not slow as perceived. The smaller ones are zippy from the get go and the larger ones can reach up to 100 kilometres per hour in a matter of seconds. They are extremely quiet and user friendly and every electric motor has full torque.” He says electricity is a quarter of the price of fuel, making the vehicles extremely economical and of course, the electric cars do not create smog which is a huge environmental benefit. “I think this is really adding to a very important part of the electric charging
network and should help fast track electric cars into the region. They really are an important part of our future,” said general manager of the North Power Network Graham Dawson. “North Power have seven electric vehicles in their fleet with five used for work in the fibre cable network. We are very impressed with the running and maintenance costs. They are continually improving and it will soon be a very good move for businesses to introduce electric cars into their company fleets. “Visitors will soon be able to easily access the Kaipara and all of Northland. This is already happening — it is great for our tourism.” ¢

The Kaipara District Council are organising a street event and market day on Thursday, December 17 in a section of Victoria Street, between Kapia Street and Hokianga Road. This section of the street will be closed to all traffic on the day from 7am– 7pm.
Pahi Boating and Fishing Club are giving keen fisher-women the chance to show up the fisher-men in their lives this Saturday, December 12 during a special ladies fishing competition.

“This part of the street being closed will allow pedestrians and shoppers to walk and move about more freely in the area. From 12pm the Dargaville Riverside Market will be located within the space. “There will be live music throughout the day as well as street furniture and places for people to sit and enjoy the environment, creating a festival atmosphere,” said community planner Annie van der Plas. “This idea came about from the community planning week we held for Dargaville earlier in the year, with
members of the public giving us their ideas for the area. “The Dargaville Business Forum are supportive of the event and their annual Christmas hamper draw will be drawn in this location at 5.30pm.” Alternative parking areas are in Parenga Street, Totara Street, Normanby Street and other sections of Victoria Street. “This is a really great opportunity to support our local market and businesses while enjoying the festive atmosphere and extra pedestrian space,” said Annie. ¢

The rules state that men are allowed to take women out on their boats but are forbidden from fishing or even helping to bait the competitors’ hooks. Club commodore Mike Donald says it’s the first time the club have held anything similar and the contest was prompted by women requesting such an event. “Lots of women think fishing competitions are a bit of a ‘man thing’ and they asked why can’t we have one of our own? We took it to the committee and they thought it was a good idea.” He says there has been a lot of interest already and is expecting a good turn out. There will be the same
categories as the regular competitions including heaviest Snapper and Kahawai as well as prizes for other exceptional catches on the day. Contestants can fish from Pahi to Mussel Rock at Tinopai from 7.30am on Saturday with final weigh-in at the clubrooms at 3pm. “We will have a few spot prizes, but the main prizes will be cash and bottles of wine.” Mike says this is the perfect chance for women to get out on the water and show the men what they can do. Tickets are $10 from Mike at Maungaturoto Auto Centre or the Maungaturoto Hotel. ¢

Hospice Kaipara Inc held their annual Volunteer Christmas Lunch at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club recently.
The King of the Kaipara fishing tournament marked its 27th anniversary last Saturday, December 5 at Kelly’s Bay with 31 teams consisting of 199 competitors participating.

The winning team overall was team ‘Pump it Up’ with James Plooy, Ben Wade and Shane Friedrich weighing in a kingfish at 24.86 kilograms. “The weather was the best it has been in along time for competition day and there were a lot of big fish caught,” said organiser Mike Nola from Nola Sports in Dargaville. The crowd was in good spirits and we gave out $10,000 worth of prizes including the children’s. A great day was had by all who attended, we were really pleased.” The gurnard category first place went to — Yuri van Houten at 1.10kg, second place — Kara McCully at 1.09kg and third place was Brad Crosbie with 1.04kg.
Eddie Hawkins won the heaviest trevally with his 3.97kg catch, second was Cheriden deVries at 3.61kg and third was Geoff Silvester with 3.09kg. The heaviest kahawai went to Dylan Chamberlain with 3.20kg, second was Brent Aikin with 3.16kg and third place went to Todd Mullinger with 2.79kg. Bruce Bower won the snapper category with 8.44kg, second was Liam Hickey with 7.24kg and third place went to Chris Hickey with 6.27kg. For the kingfish category third place went to J. Topia with 12.49kg, second was Peter Walden with 14.38kg and first prize went to Ben Wade with his 24.86kg fish. ¢

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai have set two young women sailing towards an adventure of a lifetime with their Spirit of Adventure Award.
p The Keeping it K team is off to an awards dinner in Wellington
Business Studies teacher Warren Keenan says the idea came about when it was noted the kumara chips sold in the local supermarket were made from imported sweet potatoes. “As the Kaipara is a big producer of kumara we thought our business had to have something to do with that. Keeping it K stands for Kaipara, Kiwi, kumara, kids and krisps.” The students approached Kaipara Kumara, and managing director Anthony Blundell became their mentor. “We got the chips into the school canteen and they were gone in five minutes,” says Mr Keenan. “They had the right idea and plan and understood

the significance of kumara for the area. The learning they have done through this has been incredible and the key issue for them has been keeping it in the Kaipara. They are pretty close to having something commercial.” Mr Keenan will travel to Wellington this week with his students to take part in the awards dinner along with the New Zealand Company of the Year and other businesses from around the country. The prize is one of 11 given out nationally, chosen from over 640 other businesses and includes all expenses paid flights, accommodation, awards dinner tickets and $1,000 prize money. ¢

A Dargaville bowling team entered the Kittyhawk lawn bowls tournament last week raising funds for Alzheimers at the Waipu bowling club. “They run two or three tournaments a year fundraising for different charities,” said competitor Kevin West. Communities around the area are getting into the festive spirit and spreading some Christmas cheer in the form of parades, concerts and carols that are sure to give even the coldest Christmas grinch that warm fuzzy feeling, and that’s without the egg nog. Ruawai is up next and will hold their parade, organised by the Ruawai Promotions and Development group, on December 12. Floats are to assemble at the Combined Parish Church beforehand for an 11am start. President Bruce Crompton says the motivation behind organising it is to create a bit of Christmas spontaneity. Families join in community celebration The young and young at heart gathered last weekend for Christmas festivities at Dargaville’s annual Christmas parade organised by the Dargaville and Northern Wairoa Lions followed by Christmas in the Gardens hosted by local churches. This year the parade theme was ‘A Christmas Story’ and clubs, businesses and other organisations had the chance to get creative and impress the crowds with their original floats. This year marked the 10th parade organised by the Dargaville Lions and Lions Christmas Parade committee member and head marshall Mike Collins
says seeing the children and their families line the streets makes what they do all worthwhile. Ninety year old Harry Baycroft was Santa’s official representative for the 20th year this time around and was joined in his sleigh by Joseph and Sophia Tebbutt. The Christmas celebrations carried into the night with the community gathering again at the Taha Awa Riverside Gardens for two hours of entertainment with acts showcasing a variety of talent from the Dargaville Town Band, individuals, dance groups and vocalists. ¢

The electric car pre-dates the petrol engine by decades. The question must be asked, why MPI has taken so long to respond to footage

But the one thing that I have found hard to accept over the years, was that the neighbours of some of these affected farmers did not become involved until there was a full blown crisis. The welfare of animal husbandry in New Zealand is the cornerstone of a successful farming business and the overwhelming majority of all farmers heed good animal husbandry practice. The codes of practice carried out by New Zealand’s reputable licensed meat processors is commendable and the overwhelming majority of transport operators, who are contracted to pick up calves, have their trucks registered with either MAF certification or MPI. ¢

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them.
