p The temperature soared, and the competition was hot at this year’s Arapohue-based Northern Wairoa A&P Show. From the gumboot toss to the shearing, the equestrian rings to the tug of war, rural games were fiercely contested, with an equal sense of friendly rivalry prevailing indoors, where crafts, fruits, vegetables and preserves were on display. Mayor Jason Smith was proud to take the ‘double crown’ for his prize rhubarb, having also aced the competition in Paparoa, while Northland MP Matt King showed off his pitchfork technique in the sheaf toss event. An exciting day was had by all, with cooling supplied by ample cold drinks and ice cream.

Huge support for mayoral campaign

3

u by Paul Campbell

The response to Kia Kaha Northland, launched last week by the mayors of Kaipara, Far North and Whangarei along with the Northland Regional Council has been “absolutely extraordinarily positive,” in just the first week, they have said in a joint statement. “We have had support from right across the political spectrum, from Maori and Pakeha, from farmers and citydwellers, from chambers of commerce and community volunteers, and from Northlanders from southern Kaipara to Cape Reinga. “More than 117,000 people have engaged with our content on Facebook, above 25,000 have watched our first video all the way through. Moreover, more than 3,000 are now formally backing Kia Kaha Northland by liking our page. “The message is overwhelmingly that the central government needs to get on and make the Big Five happen for the benefit not just of Northland, but of Auckland and all of New Zealand.” The five projects Kia Kaha Northland is campaigning for are: • A $240 million dry dock to service ocean-going vessels • A new base for the Royal New Zealand Navy to replace Devonport in Auckland • An expanded Northport • The completion of a four-lane expressway from Whangarei to Auckland, including the planned four-lane highway to Port Marsden • Fast-tracking a double-tracked rail line from West Auckland to Whangarei, including Port Marsden “The most common feedback from Northlanders so far is ‘yes, make the Big Five happen, but make sure you protect our environment, cultural heritage and unique Northland way of life’,” the mayors said. “As Northland’s mayors, we will be the first

p Northport at present

to board the protest vessels or go to the barricades if there is any serious risk to our marine or land environments, cultural values or unique Northland way of life. “Northlanders can be assured that the four-lane highway and double-tracked rail line must be suitable for electric and hydrogen vehicles. “That Northport will be New Zealand’s most modern port, among the world’s cleanest, greenest, lowest-carbon and most sustainable. “There will be no port expansion northwards into Whangarei Harbour, with Northport being required to expand its current operations only east and west.”

unless Northlanders say loud and clear that we want them,” they said. “We need all Northlanders to support Kia Kaha Northland by liking it or following it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or by emailing, calling or writing to the prime minister, the deputy prime minister, the leader of the opposition and our local electorate and list MPs. We need to make 2020 Northland’s year.” ¢

The mayors said the first-week response to Kia Kaha Northland, for which no ratepayers’ funds are being used, had exceeded the campaign’s forecasts, but there was still a long way to go. “Bluntly, outside the excitement of Waitangi week, the Wellington bureaucracy ignores Northland. “No politician of any party colour will ultimately ‘press go’ on the Big Five

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Response to a letter to the editor from MP Matt King Mr Shepherd (letter to the editor, Kaipara Lifestyler, February 4) is clearly a compassionate person. However, in advocating for those who are terrorising and intimidating the wider community while receiving government aid, including state housing — he is misdirecting that compassion. He states in his letter that he has sympathy for those in the [three] households for whom this “antisocial behaviour is being played out.” In making that statement, Mr Shepherd either overlooks or is oblivious to the fact that the antisocial

behaviour he refers to is orchestrated by this group. Also overlooked is the fact that the households have been persistently offered assistance by a raft of social agencies, and have just as persistently and often forcefully rejected those offers. They are not the victims of this behaviour; they are the perpetrators of it. I know with whom my sympathies lie; it is with the wider community. People such as the neighbours, the elderly, the frightened — who are, in my view, more deserving of our compassion. Matt King MP for Northland

A memorial for a fallen officer u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Mangawhare wharf, adjacent to the intersection of Murdoch Street and River Road, has seen better days. However, it’s possible that this old historical landing point is about to undergo a renaissance, thanks to some local enthusiasm, the Provincial Growth Fund, and a tragic but striking chapter in Kiwi history. The wharf is under the custodianship of local tourism entrepreneur John Hansen, who operates the successful Dargaville Rail Carts venture. John has been in contact with the police force, who have a special interest in seeing the wharf restored. There, on the night of July 31 1890, the first Kiwi policeman to be killed in the line of duty lost his life, slain by a gunshot from drunken gumdigger Henry Funcke. The executive assistant to Police Commissioner Bush has been in contact with Mr Hansen to p Constable Neil McLeod may finally receive a fitting memorial for his sacrifice; the first New Zealand ask how the police could be policeman to die in the line of duty involved, to perhaps memorialise this event. As he says: “Our proposal Mr Hansen and supporters of the is to rebuild the wharf and to erect a plan to rebuild the wharf have applied memorial plaque to honour Constable to the Provincial Growth Fund, which McLeod’s dedication to duty and his aims to support tourism and access sacrifice. Not only will this project be a to waterways. They are also keen to great community asset, but would be a workshop input from the council and fitting historical recognition of the work other community stakeholders to make in the community of the NZ Police force.” this happen. ¢

Athletes ready to give it a ‘tri’

Kick-start targets sea lane infrastructure

Kai Iwi lakes will once again host a challenging triathlon event on February 22, in what has become an annual pilgrimage for athletes to the picturesque Kaipara location.

u by Andy Bryenton

The 2020 Fireco Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon comprises swimming, cycling and running in the environs of Taharoa Domain, and attracts competitors from all around New Zealand. Sport Northland, who host the event, is confident of another excellent turnout as in previous years. A raft of generous supporters including Fireco, Silver Fern Farms and the Kaipara District Council have made the event possible — now it’s up to the athletes to give it 100 per cent. The return of the short course and the addition of a Try a Tri course have proven popular options, with big support for these ‘sprint plus’ and ‘mini’ events on social media. The new Try a Tri event comprises a 100m swim, nine-kilometre cycle

and two-kilometre run. The main short course event ups the ante with a 350m swim, nine-kilometre cycle and three and a half kilometre run. Meanwhile, the Sprint + Tri presents the challenge of a 350m swim, 20-kilometre cycle and nine-kilometre run. There are also options for children to take part in suitably sized competitions for their age groups. Kai Iwi Lakes has proven a top drawcard for tourism this summer, with the hot weather seeing campground full to capacity through the entire season. There’s still time for both adults, students and children to log on and compete at sportnorthlandevents. co.nz/northland-triathlon, or plan a day at the lakes watching the action from the start-finish line at Pine Beach. ¢

Things are moving swiftly on the wharf and harbour lane infrastructure front, with the Kaipara District Council calling for public input on how best to deploy a large disbursement from the government’s Provincial Growth Fund.

p Kick-start wharf repairs and waterway renewal by having your say on how Provincial Growth Fund contributions are invested

It has been confirmed that $4 million will be directed toward the improvement of water-based transport amenities, with a view to create tourism opportunities and connect communities. At the core of this process is community involvement; a factor, which the council is taking very seriously, due to the historic nature of Kaipara’s wharf network and its potential. “It’s very important that we understand that these wharves are a hub for the community,” says council spokesperson for Kaipara Kick Start projects Dianne Bussey.

“There is such a lot of wisdom and knowledge in our small towns about them, and we must listen to what the public wants.” To make this possible, a series of local meetings have been called around the Kaipara Harbour heartland, inviting the public to have their say. Meetings will take place at the Tinopai Community Hall on February 16 from 10am, and then at the Paparoa War Memorial Hall on February 17 from 5pm. Both the KDC and the administrators of the PGF express their desire for citizens to make their views heard. ¢

ith gold at very high levels, right now would be an opportune time to go through the old jewellery box and dig out those old gold chains, rings and brooches and turn them into cash. Tony Grant says “Now is a great time to sell. We will buy anything made of gold – old jewellery, coins, alluvial (river gold), virtually anything, even gold teeth! We also need sterling silver in any form, including cups, tea services, cutlery, old coins and the like” he said.

he buyers from John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd, visiting in Dargaville next week, are happy to look at any interesting items, for example vintage pocket and wristwatches such as Rolex, Men’s Omega, Breitling and gold watches etc. Also wanted, pre 1920’s picture postcards, Maori and Pacific artefacts, old fountain pens and other small antique or historical items. “If you have something unusual which you would like to sell, please bring it into one of our venues, we would like the chance to at least have a look at it” said Tony Grant, buyer for the Company. “We will consider anything which may be of interest to a collector” he said.

Some Big Dollars in Early Banknotes

E

arly New Zealand Banknotes dated before 1932 are currently fetching big money! This is according to Mr Tony Grant, author of the John Bertrand New Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue. Mr Grant is in Dargaville next week on a buying trip for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd and would be very keen to see any of these issues. “We will pay at least $300 for any undamaged Ten Shilling or One Pound banknote from a

New Zealand trading bank dated 1932 or before. Denominations of five pounds and higher would be worth from $700. “Any banknote dated prior to 1900 would be worth at least $1000” said Mr Grant. Also purchased are any Reserve Bank of New Zealand pre-decimal issues, especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas banknotes prior to the 1950’s are also wanted.

Collectors Needing War Medals

urrently, throughout NZ and the world there is a big demand by collectors for war medals. These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the war medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars. General service medals from both the First and Second World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group of medals has any special award for bravery such as the Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have old medals, some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure what to do with. We will be happy to look at any war medals whatsoever, just bring them in to venues” he said.

Old Coins Can Toss Up a Rarity

C

heck those drawers and cupboards, you may have a rarity lurking amongst your coins. This advice from Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “We want to see any old foreign coin accumulations. We will be quite happy to go through your coins on the spot and give you an idea of what we can pay. You just never know what can turn up! New Zealand silver coins up to 1946 will be purchased at 10 times their face value” he said.

Wearable arts on track for 2020

Historic tavern in new hands

The executive producers of Dargaville’s Wearable Arts extravaganza for 2020 have opted to change the show dates of the artistic and creative celebration in the interests of democracy; prior dates coincided with the recently announced general election. However, this minor alteration has not slowed down the progress of the show toward opening night.

Dargaville’s iconic and historic Northern Wairoa Hotel has seen many eras come and go, from the colonial age to the time of the gumdiggers, through to the end of sail and the rise of steam on the river that lies only a short walk from its doors.

p With a date change to accommodate the nation’s general election, Dargaville’s Wearable Arts 2020 is forging ahead to create a stunning show

for 2020. The centrepiece, this year as in every year, is definitely the creative work of our local artists and designers. John says that with the date of opening night adjusted to September 25 there is still plenty of time for interested wearable art designers to sign up and be ready to stun the audience when the curtain goes up. Entry forms are available online at dargavillearts.co.nz or at Dargaville’s Muddy Waters Gallery on Hokianga Road. Interested artists may also contact John directly on 027 525 8189. ¢

Now another era draws to a close, as new owners are set to take up the title deed mid-February. As a publican and restauranteur with experience all over New Zealand, outgoing Northern Wairoa boss Darryl says that he’s been particularly fond of his tenure here. During five years he’s made friends, refurbished the grand old building, contributed to charitable appeals, such as helping provide a new ambulance for Dargaville, and hosted some memorable parties. That’s why, as new owners come to take up the legacy of this grand old monument to Kaipara hospitality, he says that he’s planning to bow out gracefully, but in style. First of all, putting on a classic Valentine’s Day dinner for local lovers; Darryl says that there are few fine dining options available for couples to enjoy on Cupid’s big day and that bubbles and

silver cutlery will definitely be ready at the Northern Wairoa for the 14th. Secondly, he’s booked rocking covers band Zefferluv for a finalnight blowout, a big party on the 15th which will send off his tenure with some last pints, some live music and good times. Not that the gregarious publican is going far. Despite handing over the reins to fresh talent, he’s been won over by the charms of Dargaville and will return (after a brief holiday) to build his family a new home here. For now, Darryl insists that his plan is to relax and enjoy the sherry for a while. There’s no knowing what this community-minded entrepreneur may think of next. In the meanwhile, he and his team would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to all their patrons over the past halfdecade. Come along on the 15th and celebrate new beginnings!

“It’s all coming together extremely well,“ says executive producer John Pickworth. “Sixty per cent of entries have been received to make this a complete show, with ample time to go. “The board of producers have finalised the show concept, key service providers have been engaged, and we’ve secured the services of a new production manager and creative director to make this year’s show better than ever.” Favourite factors from last year’s show, such as the light projection artistry of AwhiWorld, will return again

Buying or selling your house?

Northland a crucial election

u by Natalie Robinson and Rebecca Merry

u by Andy Bryenton

Sellers and buyers take note, changes have occurred to the standard Sale and Purchase Agreement form used by most agents and lawyers when buying or selling property.

The new form makes it harder to withdraw from a purchase using a finance condition, cracks down on people delivering run-down chattels and will likely take longer to fill out. Purchasers wanting to pull out of buying a house due to being declined finance will now have to provide more than their word as ‘supporting evidence’ to successfully escape the agreement. If requested by the seller an email or letter from the bank confirming the denial will now be required. Consequently, buyers who cannot obtain evidence of a lack of finance may now be forced to go ahead with the purchase. Buyers who previously relied on the clause to get out of an agreement for reasons other than finance will no longer be able to do so. It means that purchasers will need to be more vigilant when signing agreements to ensure that they are not forced to go ahead with a purchase they cannot afford or are unhappy with for other reasons. For sellers, the new agreement will require them to be more honest about the state of their chattels. A nonfunctioning oven or faulty stove top will now need to be listed in a separate

The electoral seat of Northland, which comprises our own Kaipara district, may prove to be an important indicator of how power will be brokered after the general election, set by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for September 19. New Zealand First’s Shane Jones and National’s Matt King are picked as front runners to battle it out in the north.

section to those items that are in reasonable working order. If a vendor is not transparent, they may be liable to pay compensation to the buyer for their oversight. Other changes to the agreement include: • a new, lengthy process to resolve disputes over compensation between buyer and seller • an optional toxicology report condition • an update and expansion of the counterparts clause, and • clarification of the timeframe in which deposits may be released Due to these changes, the agreement has lengthened from 12 pages to 19 pages. It means that more time will be required to read over the agreement and care should be taken where any addition has occurred. Having a lawyer review your agreement before you sign is the best way to avoid any traps. of Prime Minister Ardern, who says: “you can bet” she will be running a campaign at full capacity, with no deal on the table. Off the table, however, is a postelection alliance between the National Party and New Zealand First. Leader of the Opposition Simon Bridges has stood by his statements categorically vetoing a partnership with Winston Peters and his party, as relations between the opposition and the coalition worsened at Waitangi celebrations last week. With New Zealand First polling below the five per cent MMP threshold, it may prove crucial for Shane Jones to win Northland to ensure his party’s political future. That, in light of Bridges’ hard line, may make Northland a ‘battleground’ electorate, which determines the balance of power in a post-2020 parliament. The message from all parties? An important factor in the race for Northland was the speculation by many that the Labour Party would orchestrate a deal here, similar to the one, which National has proffered in prior elections to the ACT Party in the seat of Epsom, Auckland. However, Prime Minister Ardern ruled this out on February 5, saying: “I didn’t do deals last election, I have no plans to do deals this election.” New Zealand First leader Winston Peters won Northland in a 2015 byelection, only to lose it to incumbent National MP Matt King in the general election of 2017. For 2020, the New Zealand First candidate for Northland is Shane Jones, who, along with Mr Peters, had toured the north during January to announce disbursements from his portfolio project, the Provincial Growth Fund. Matt King, however, has been quoted as saying: “I beat his boss, I beat Winston Peters — I’m up to the challenge.” Labour’s candidate Willow-Jean Prime has the full support

Welcome to Mangawhai Lifesavers have a ‘safe surf season’ It has been qualifying time for lifeguards training during the summer at the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service with 12 graduating last weekend, another eight due to receive awards next weekend and others qualifying as IRB crewmen. “It’s been busy on the club front, and we have had huge numbers of people on the beach during the holidays,” said club instructor Jess Costello. “It has been a very safe summer, and we have had a good number of members on patrol. Perhaps a few close calls for boaties out on the bar, but no major incidents. The weather — has been hot!” Club members have been called on to carry out a number of first aid services. “The club has rostered more than 1,000 hours on patrol. These will continue, with the expectation that surf conditions may become more active as weather patterns change in the Pacific as summer goes on. Club president John Drucker says cyclone seas swell and large surf “has a tendency to reconfigure the sandy ocean bottom, which can expose rocks and cause holes making rip currents

stronger and more prevalent. We ask that beachgoers continue to swim between the flags, follow lifeguard directions, and do not overestimate their abilities or swim alone.” Mr Drucker also wanted to “recognise all the local merchants and businesses that continually support our lifesaving efforts.” Along with their peers from surf clubs around the country, Mangawhai club members will be eyeing the 2020 New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships from March 12 to 15 in Gisborne. Then more than 1,500 athletes are expected to show their skills, from Masters who have lost track of the number of nationals events they have attended to 15-year-olds experiencing the event for the first time. The nationals cater to all levels of participation and almost all aspects of surf life saving disciplines with New

Valentines Day When love is in the air u by Paul Campbell

A candle-lit dinner, be it in a fine restaurant or home-cooked in a holiday bach at the beach, a bottle of wine perhaps, of course, a bunch of flowers — the best way to celebrate St Valentine’s Day on February 14 is a personal choice. It probably comes down to budget in the end, and of course, there will be many individuals and couples that will likely take little notice of the date anyway. Moreover, in researching the event, this writer was fascinated by how others see us Kiwis when ‘love is in the air’. According to an American website on the subject: “As in the other parts of the world, New Zealand also celebrates to honour the great Saint Valentine. New Zealand youngsters and adults celebrate the festival with much vigour and joy. It is one of the festivals, which are popular in the whole country almost celebrated in an American style. The cities of New Zealand will be wearing the look of romance. Youngsters wander the streets hand in hand with smiles on faces.” That glowing description might be a little hard to swallow! Nevertheless, where and how did the day originate?

Saint Valentine was a priest who conducted marriage ceremonies in thirdcentury Rome. The emperor at the time was Claudius II, who decided that his men would do better on the battlefields of the time if they didn’t have romantic stars in their eyes, and were single. So he banned marriage for young men, and that of course upset Valentine, which led to a disagreement between them. Valentine continued with his marriage ceremonies. When Claudius heard this, it was a case of a stab in the back and Valentine was executed. It’s not certain why the day is observed in February. The most popular suggestion is that this was the month in which Saint Valentine was martyred, although some theorists believe that it was first celebrated in February to overshadow a pagan festival. The Lupercalia celebrations involved priests,

a sacred cave and animal sacrifices. That was supposed to make the women of the city more fertile the year after. The growth of Christianity is thought to have love to overcome the practice, and they

decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day to overshadow the pagan event. Whatever the true origin, the celebration has been around for some 17 centuries! ¢

DESIGNING HOMES FOR NORTHLANDERS

EYE CENTRE PRIMECARE I’m worried about getting glaucoma as my mum has it, should I be? Unfortunately if glaucoma runs in your family you are 10 times more likely to develop the disease.

Do I need to be referred to see a specialist at the Eye Clinic?

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? We offer an No obligation free initial consultation and will give a fixed price so there are no surprises HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET PLANS DRAWN UP? This is dependant on the scale of the project and how far along you are with the planning. The complexity of the design and whether other professionals are required can also play a part. We can discuss this in your initial consultation.

A referral isn’t essential and many of our patients are self referrals. (Don’t forget to bring your glasses)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUILDING AND RESOURCE CONSENT? The Building Consent are the construction drawings and how the project is built. This is our speciality.

My eyes water all the time, what can cause this?

A Resource Consent relates to the concept and design of the project and whether that fits into the planning rules of the Council.

Watering eyes can be from dry eyes, abnormal position of your eye lids, blocked or narrowed openings to the tear ducts. Your ophthalmologist will be able to diagnose and advise re treatment.

WHO MAKES IT EASY TO ENJOY A REAL KIWI FIREPLACE WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE? HOW DO I KNOW WHICH FIREPLACE WILL BEST HEAT MY HOME? Because every home is different, we can offer advice on the right size and placement of your new fire — right down to where the hearth will be installed, where the chimney will exit the roofline, and how large a firebox you’ll need to generate cosy warmth throughout. Modern fires are so much more efficient than old open fireplaces, so you may be surprised not only by the stylish designs available to complement your decor, but by the compact sizes on offer too.

IS IT TIME CONSUMING AND DIFFICULT TO GAIN COUNCIL CONSENT TO INSTALL A FIREPLACE? Without experience in the industry it might be — there are many details to consider! But we can handle all the paperwork, secure consent, make a plan that suits your home, and then complete installation within a matter of weeks. It’s still not an overnight process, so it pays to plan ahead, but with our experienced staff taking care of the regulatory necessities, there’s no need to spend hours of your time on paperwork!

CAN A NEW FIREPLACE BE USED FOR HOT WATER HEATING? Depending on the distance between your fireplace and your hot water cylinder — and the design and condition of that cylinder — you may be able to heat your water in winter with a ‘wet back’ fire. This is where we come into our own, because of course we’re plumbers as well as fireplace installers! If it’s possible, it’s a great investment, making that firewood do double duty!

As a general rule, a hard-working chimney — one that serves the main heat source for a home in winter — should be swept by a professional every two years. Burning ‘sappy’ damp or otherwise poorly cured wood means more soot will build up, and the chimney should receive more attention. Check with your home insurance provider, as they may have a clause which dictates the frequency of chimney sweepings to remain covered. And when the sweep comes around, get them to check the firebox for rust and wear and tear too — catching problems before they happen.

CAN YOU ALSO CHOP MY FIREWOOD FOR ME? No — sorry, but we’re very busy plumbing, roofing and installing fireplaces! On the plus side, a lovely stack of firewood looks and smells great, and you’ll be warm and toasty by the time you’re done — as well as getting a lot of healthy exercise.

P.A.G LAw Aw LTD A WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES IN THE FUTURE?

How much will it cost to build a house, a shed, etc? A lot depends on where you are building, ground type, size of house/shed, what finishing you are using, pricing varies from house to house.

What is the building consent procedure? The council requires lots of information now and as above, it varies from house to house, where you are building, section size, etc. With over 35 years experience in the building industry, we can help guide you through so it is not such a daunting experience.

Most people’s major asset is their house. How you own your house is one way to protect your future, and that of your family. Reviewing how you own your house might help to protect your major assets. We can help you review this issue and assist you in deciding what might be best for you. This is particularly important if there is a possibility that you or your partner might be in need of rest home care in the future. WHAT IS AN ENDURING POWER OF ATTORNEY? An enduring power of attorney (EPA) is a document where you appoint someone to be your spokesperson, if you are not able to manage your financial affairs or your wellbeing. It is very important to have these documents in place, no matter how old you are. We can advise you fully of the best options for you. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DIE? Unfortunately we all leave this planet and we don’t know when that will happen. Having a will in place helps the family and friends you leave behind to make sure your wishes are followed. Without a will, it often creates a lot of unnecessary drama and extra legal costs. DOES IT COST A FORTUNE TO SEE A LAWYER TO SORT THESE THINGS OUT? At P.A.G Law we believe that having a legal “warrant of fitness” at least every five years is far better than not seeing a lawyer to discuss your needs. We don’t run our cars without oil! Having your legal affairs sorted out properly in a well-considered fashion is a lot less costly than if your legal affairs are not taken care of now. 2020 is the start of a new decade – make sure your family affairs are up to date. Contact the team at P.A.G Law for a comprehensive review of your legal matters.

High flying visit for Ruawai u by Andy Bryenton

Ruawai College students began the school year with a visit from a combat-capable, fully operational Sea Sprite SH-2 GI helicopter, dropping in out of the blue sky to land on their school’s helipad. The visit, by a crew of highly trained navy officers, was a prize for the school won by 12-year-old student Nina Partridge, as part of a nationwide competition to graphically design a cover for the navy’s magazine. The theme, of bicultural cooperation, is an appropriate one as our armed forces personnel gathered to celebrate Waitangi Day last Thursday. Nina’s design did not win the top accolade, but it was highly commended enough for the navy to deploy both helicopter and crew to meet Ruawai’s students. At a special assembly, students asked the team of jumpsuited officers about the nature of modern warfare and training, with many expressing an interest in joining the armed forces upon graduation. Questions ranged from the tactical, on the specific weapons and techniques used in boarding actions, to the political, who are the navy deployed against in modern times, and the personal, with the navy servicepeople expressing the fact that they find the

comradeship and opportunity to help in humanitarian crises the most rewarding parts of the job. They also pointed out that this very chopper, from Whenuapai’s Six Squadron, had been involved in apprehending drug smugglers on the high seas in the Indian Ocean. “We’re proud to welcome the navy here today, and it’s all thanks to Nina’s efforts,” said Ruawai College principal Raeleen Harré. “She’s just one of our students who is a high achiever; we like to say that for a small school we certainly punch above our weight!” The proud educators and students of Ruawai enjoyed a field-side meet and greet with the officers of Six Squadron before performing a thunderous haka of welcome, as one group of warriors to another in olden times. Ruawai College has its own helipad due to the fundraising efforts of locals, who constructed it to assist the Northland Rescue Helicopter in times of emergency. ¢

SWIM between THE FLAGS THIS SUMMER

When dairy industry representatives gather at the DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum on February 18 in Whangarei, information on beating adverse conditions with supplementary feed will come from here in the Kaipara. It’s the first of five such symposia to be held across New Zealand tackling the issue, and the Northland Agricultural Research Farm (NARF) in Dargaville is at the core of research. The trial evaluates the production, environmental and financial outcomes of supplement feed on dairy farms. Currently, underway at the Dargavillebased research farm, this study is in its second year, comparing three 28ha pasture-based systems with varying stocking rates and feeds. The Supplement Use in a Variable Climate research reveal is only one part of the forum. The event will also host economist Cameron Bagrie, DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle and strategy and investment leader Dr Bruce Thorrold. Northland Dairy Development Trust chair Terence Brocx says the supplement research being presented explores three systems. One is pasture only, the second is pasture and PKE, and the third is pasture and PKE plus other supplements. “This research is really relevant for farmers in Northland. We farm in such challenging weather conditions. This

work will help inform our decisionmaking in terms of which option is the most environmentally-friendly and economical,” says Terence. “The trial also tests and demonstrates options to manage feed shortages; through once-a-day milking, early culling, drying off and using supplements to fill feed gaps.”

Along with the supplement research, Northland’s forum will also present a recent NDDT trial looking at responses to nitrogen, sulphur and potassium spring fertiliser. It was done in response to farmers asking whether they should apply Ammo or urea in early spring each year. ¢
