Farewells in the death of Miss Smith, two months after her 102nd birthday was celebrated at her lifetime home, Totara House in Matakohe, should be a “cause for celebration, not sadness,” says her close friend and confidant over the last decade, Pete Panhuis. “Mavis lived for more than a century, and she left us with a final smile. That’s how she will be remembered.” Mr Panhuis is a team leader at the Kauri Museum, an institution conceived at a Smith family and community meeting 50 years ago, in Totara House. In the last half-century of her remarkable life, Miss Smith was to see a humble gathering of artefacts in a virtual barn grow into an internationally recognised museum attracting up to 90,000 visitors a year. “Mavis really was our matriarch,” said museum CEO Bet Nelley. ”The sombre faces on museum staff on Monday morning as the news spread soon gave way to smiles and even laughter as anecdotes flowed about a woman with a cheeky sense of humour, who became a vital part of the museum itself.”

Far North Mayor, Wayne Browne, says his council wants to govern its area and have a direct link to central government. Northland Regional Councillor, Ian Walker, who is also president of Farmers of New Zealand, says he believes ”we need to review the whole provision of local government services to set appropriate priorities. Harley Davidson bikers from Austria, Switzerland and Germany stopped to have a picnic at the band rotunda in Dargaville on day four of their two week trip around New Zealand. Tour operator Jurgen Mayer hosts it twice a year and says the trip has been “beautiful” so far. They pick their Harleys up in Auckland,
roam the North Island then travel over to the South Island and they chose to go west through state highway 12 because it is ‘more interesting and less traffic.’ One rider, Rolanol Stegemann has been on Harley tours through the United States of America and says that the “New Zealand tour is the best.”

“Kaipara: A slice of heaven” is the drafted tagline for the promotional billboard which stemmed out of last year’s ‘pay it forward’ facebook photo competition with organisers Rose Sterling and Sarah Tittleton seeking sponsorship to erect it.

Jae Carey’s winning photo of children on horseback is set to feature on the billboard which will be situated at the Brynderwyn corner of State Highway One and Rose says she is hopeful it will be up within the next two months. “We welcome feedback from the community on whether they like the slogan or not,” says Rose adding, “the plan is to get Dave Dobbyn up here to perform the ‘slice of heaven’ track at the unveiling and stay for a concert.” The pair has teamed up with James Brackenbury who is part of the Kauri Coast Tourism Group as well as the Northland Tourism Group who has mocked up what the billboard could look like in Photoshop. The trio met with Commissioner Colin Dale who gave positive feedback

They are also interested in erecting more billboards and are interested in hearing from landowners who would like to promote the Kaipara. Around 80 people attended homeopath and Mangawhai resident Donna Flavell’s book launch ‘Essences of D’light’ at the new Mangawhai museum. She has been studying homeopathy for 20 years and in 1999 she began creating healing essences, comparable to rescue remedy where drops are ingested, which help overcome a barrier or enhance a situation and she highlights 28 within her book. “I want to reach as many people as possible looking to work through challenges or situations that limit them in everyday life and offer them easy tools to gain the freedom to move forward with self awareness, self discovery and self empowerment,” says Donna.

A precarious start to life for a native bird of the night saw a rare recovery made after a Tinopai rescue operation Our family dog Patu found the fledgling morepork on the bush floor. Fortunately, she was as surprised as the tiny bird and I was able to pick it up before there was a tragedy. A call to Robert Webb at the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre established that the chick was very welcome there, where it duly arrived in a cat-cage, after 24 hours on a diet of mince fed via chopstick. “In hot weather the morepork parents often turf out the smallest or even a couple of chicks, to stop the nest overheating and suffocating the entire brood,” says Robert. “But we’ve had good success in rearing them, and when they’re ready we like to return them to the place they’re found.” Thus, our morepork duly came home last week and we released him at dusk beneath the tree where he was found. As soon as his box was opened he erupted skywards and flew into the trees. Robert and his wife Robyn established the centre in 1992 and take any birds that require assistance, native or otherwise. “Sometimes we even get them by courier,” Robert says. Once reared or

So far this year, among others, the centre has also reared a baby bittern, a young banded rail, a dotterel chick, three baby hawks and four young wood pigeons. Robert said they were pretty sure the morepork was male, and they knew he was ready to go home as he’d grown in his adult feathers and begun to fly. “He also started making a warning clicking noise when we went near him, which was a sign he’d be able to handle himself out there.” “Seeing that successful release happen is the best reward you can ask for,” Robert says. Three Kaipara primary schools have welcomed social workers to their classrooms this past week, after the expansion of the government’s Social Workers in Schools programme. The schools are Tinopai, Dargaville’s St Joseph’s and Kaihu Valley. Tinopai School acting principal, Barry Garland, says their first day with social worker, Glenys Davidson, went really well. “It was awesome,” he says. “She chimed right in.” He says Glenys will be visiting Tinopai from Dargaville each week, or as required, and the plan is for her to be another familiar and friendly face. “Families will be able to work voluntarily with Glenys to resolve any issues identified.”
Glenys, who has worked for several years with Child, Youth and Family, says she is looking forward to a role that has long been a personal goal. “I did my degree in Social Services specifically to eventually work with children in rural and low decile schools. With the right support, their achievement is unlimited.” The three stage SWiS programme will be completed in 2013 when around 131,000 children in all 673 decile 1–3 schools in New Zealand will have access to a social worker.

He said there would be issues with port revenues in Whangarei, and noted that with 86 per cent of exports through the port coming from rural production, including timber from Kaipara and the Far North “a return to a rural authority of 70 per cent of revenue would see wealth going back into rural roads and infrastructure where it is created.” ‘‘It is not about Kaipara joining the Far North, it is about creating a
body that is governed by people that have the knowledge and a feel for the requirements of the rural sector.’’ “At present there is a lack of cohesion between urban and rural interests that needs to be rectified,” he said. Gavin Beattie, a senior policy analyst at the commission, says there is “a certain level of support for the Far North plan and the next stage would be to look more closely at the broader community affected by any restructuring.”

‘A celebration, not sadness’ She was born in Totara House on November 9, 1920, one of twins and of eight children to George and Emily Smith, whose parents in turn were the first European settlers in Matakohe, arriving with the Albertlanders in 1862. The Smiths ran a major kauri mill, later destroyed by fire, before turning to farming a wide swath of cleared land in the Kaipara. In her biography, Child of the Kauri,
Mavis recalled that in 1961 her cousin, Mervyn Sterling, suggested creating a museum, after a disastrous fire destroyed the then Matakohe community hall. In January 1962, 1,000 people gathered and a ‘pioneer’ museum was opened. “That’s how today’s Kauri Museum was born,” said Ms Nelley. “Now, in Mavis, a kauri stalwart has fallen, to be sorely missed by us all.”

The Ruawai Lions Club is holding an evening garden concert to raise funds for Project Promise on Saturday, February 16. The concert will be at the home of Dorothy and Jim Simpson of Ruawai. “The music starts at 4pm and runs until 7pm, and food and non-alcoholic refreshments will be on sale. It’s BYO alcohol, and a rug or something to sit on,” says Dorothy, who is also Secretary of the Ruawai Lions Club. Featured performers are R&B Connection, Anna Marie Cutts, Peter Martin, Otherwise Fair, Bailey Jenyns, Ace Singers, and Jess and Friends. Jim Simpson says they’ve used their garden for previous concerts and

The garden concert heads up a busy few weeks for the Ruawai Lions, who also have a Teddy Bears’ Picnic planned for March 2 and their annual auction on March 23.

Makeover for St Mary’s Church Plenty to love at new

Assisted by a generous benefactor, volunteers have recently given Ruawai’s St Mary’s Church a total exterior repaint.
The little town of Ruawai seems to be getting better and brighter with every visit — new stores are popping up and new endeavours getting underway which make the small Kaipara settlement seem almost metropolitan in its upswing of growth. Not only does the small farming community by the banks of the Kaipara Harbour now boasts its own outlet of national chain RD1, it’s also the home of a modern new gym, and now the town is also host to an interesting new boutique store. Lovey’s is one of those shops which you can easily get lost in — a treasure trove of carefully hand picked pre-loved items at prices that are more than just affordable. Taking the place of Ruawai’s previous W2W second hand shop (now moved to Maungaturoto), Lovey’s presents a bright and engaging window display which hints at the wealth of bargains within. As well as clothing for men and ladies (all seemingly fresh off the shelf, and chosen to be both

Ruawai Parish Co-ordinator Bev Balcombe says the painting effort was initiated by the efforts of departing Dargaville Catholic Parishes priest Father Ika Kaihea, who was farewelled earlier this year. “Fr Kaihea, who is Tongan, pulled out all the stops to get St Mary’s painted before he moved to Auckland, and a friend of his plus members of the local Tongan community have done all the work,” says Bev. “With the assistance of a wonderful and unexpected donation, we were able to stretch funds to also paint the church house, and we haven’t given up hope that the miracles will continue and the house roof will be painted as well.”
The first St Mary’s Church was built in 1916 at Raupo on the corner of Galvin Road. When the new St Mary’s was built in 1953 on its current main road site just north of town the old church was moved to Maungaturoto. Out and about at events in the Kaipara and further afield, Paparoa’s Caryn ‘Missy’ Tilby is attracting a lot of attention, with her ‘canvases ‘ sometimes everywhere at once. Missy is a face-painter with a special flair, and her mobile creations have graced the recent Pahi Regatta and the Artisans Fair in Whangarei, as she manages to find time between running Ledbury Farm in Paparoa with husband Les, and her six children, aged one to 15.
“Les works full time for a contractor so the daily farm chores are usually left to me, but the farming side of things is relatively easy. Our stock are all pretty quiet and will come to the call so I take the dog out for ‘motivation’ rather than necessity,” she says. “I have set up Missy’s Mystics Face

She finds the time for her art on a human canvas, despite full-time farm chores and a growing family to care for. “We are quite old fashioned I think. We don’t have a television and in the summer especially, we try to encourage our kids to enjoy being outdoors as much as possible. “We try to produce as much of our own food as possible — our own meat and we have a well established orchard and our garden provides enough vegetables
to keep us going too. We bottle and pickle any excess.” Missy is the founder and principle artist at Mystics. “There’s nothing better than seeing your canvas smile,” she says. Her skills include henna and the application of ‘body shine’ — a technique incorporating custom glitter tattoo designs for women to add something extra to that special event. Jetski registration required Jetski users must register their machines and they should be operated responsibly says Northland Regional Council. “We’ve had a number of fairly serious incidents around the region so far this summer, including one young man who allegedly travelled into a marina at speed on a jetski,” says Northland’s Deputy Harbourmaster, Chidambaram Surendran. Other incidents have included children being towed behind jetskis on a biscuit without a proper lookout and others travelling at speed very close to rocks and riverbanks in narrow areas. While Kaipara Harbour Warden, Des Subritzky says no incidents of jetski misuse have been
reported to him, he stresses the need to register. “As well as helping locate anyone seen breaking our safety bylaws registration is also a useful way of identifying jetskis if they’re stolen.” Jetski owners who register at Auckland Council can use their machines in Auckland, Northland and Waikato regions costing $35. “Once a jetski is registered with the Auckland Council, registration is valid in all three regions for the life of the jetski. Ownership can be transferred free of cost if the jetski’s sold,” says Mr Surendran

Kaipara cuisine on show The best of local cuisine will again be on the table at this year’s Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival set down for March 23 at the new location of Harding Park. Organiser, Raewyn Sills says it will be a day out with food, and family and fun building on last year’s successes. “This year there will feature more competitions, more Allyson Gofton cooking demonstration at stalls and the inaugural Miss 2012 Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival. Mardi Gras and jazz were on order last weekend at the Aratapu Tavern, with many attending the festivities wearing masks and other finery. Music on the Friday night was provided by the John Wilcox Quartet, with Joe Carbery on
saxophone, clarinet and vocals. On Saturday, ragtime singer/guitarist Ian Goodsman opened the day, followed by sets from The Red Arrows Dixieland Band, The Hot Club of Ripiro, The Late Hour Boys and Tom Main.
Trailride a blast
Marie Hayes enjoyed the kiddies loop at the Tutamoe Trailride last weekend while over 200 riders came from all over Northland, Auckland and as far south as Morrinsville in the Waikato. Held in the Wai o te Kumerau valley, it covered
around 80 km across three farms, with one farm being the highest in Northland providing breath taking views. The main loop was 65 km long and had over 10 off shoots for the more expert riders. All funds raised went to Aranga School.

Dargaville residents are urged to save water as the extended summer weather continues. We need to achieve savings in water use if compulsory restrictions are to be avoided. The water treatment plant can not treat the water fast enough to keep up with the current demand. As household tanks run dry, it is usually water from reticulated public schemes which is used by bulk water carriers to top up empty tanks and Council may be forced to review this in order to ensure that there is water for all. How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them.
