The 2018 Northland Rescue Helicopter Appeal has been a phenomenal success with a record $385,000 raised from October 1, compared to the 2017 total of $307,000.

Roads connect everybody to everyone else, their products to markets, communities to communities and services.” Developing harbour facilities could centre on “two projects already planned but stalled. Kaipara Development Agency in 2002 conducted a design and feasibility study for a wharf at Pouto. That proposed wharf has not been constructed due to lack of funds”. A second stalled project was a proposed pontoon at Dargaville wharf. “A future Kaipara Moana public transport opportunity exists to be built on a new network of wharves connecting Kaipara communities with each other and also connecting with Auckland.“ Food production was the ‘third leg of the stool’. “With the most versatile soils, the Kaipara can become the food bowl for Auckland. A food industry

development project will build on the 2001-2002 Topoclimate Study for the Hokianga and Western Kaipara, updating its crops and extending its area around the Kaipara Harbour to include Mangawhai, Wellsford and Tapora. The Kaipara can grow to celebrate the heart of its name and its place as a key food, agriturismo destination.” “The three parts of the Kaipara Kickstart fit together — new crops and foods being produced and transported on better local roads or by wharves for access to markets. “Visitors arriving by sea to beautiful farms for food tourism experiences, local people proud of doing what they do best. Other people wanting to be part of the Kaipara and making inward investment decisions that improve and further develop this. “This is about making better what we already do well or have done well in the past. Northland Emergency Services Trust chair, Paul Ahlers, said the continued generosity of the Northland public helps to keep its choppers in the air and this year’s appeal will also support the purchase of two new aircraft. “We rely so much on our community and the funds raised this year means Northlanders will have helped us to update the aircraft and provide the best possible service we can. “The result of the appeal is a testament to how much Northlanders value the service, and all the people involved who play a vital role in ensuring we have a world-class air ambulance service.” The launch of the two new choppers in March comes at a time when the service is in higher demand than ever before, completing up to eight flights a day in 2018. Flight hours increased from 1,198 in 2017 to 1,407 in 2018, and 901 missions in 2017 increased to 984 in 2018. Chief pilot, Peter Turnbull, said the dedication and expertise of the Northland rescue chopper team is the reason it can respond to the increasing number of missions. “The team needs to be ready to go at all times of the day and night, so it is challenging and often very emotional work, but being able to do something we love while also saving lives is a very rewarding thing.” ¢ Water Restrictions

In support of Fisheries New Zealand, the Baylys Beach Society encourages all members of the public from surrounding areas to attend a community meeting at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club on Monday, February 18 at 7pm.

Continuing a tradition from the mid-1920s when Donnellys Crossing used to be a forestry town, the area will be holding its 95th annual Sports and Family Day on February 16 beginning at 10.30am, and all are invited.

Described as a good old-fashioned family day out, there are many activities to enjoy, such as running races, gumboot throwing, tug of war, top team challenge, water slide and the favourite Donnellys Dunker. “It’s a time to enjoy lots of laughs and try new things people might not have done before,” said last year’s organiser, Michelle Cobb. There is a colouring competition for children, as well as raffles and refreshments.

In the early years, the event attracted hundreds of people, many taking the train from Dargaville. It began as an axemen’s carnival; then the athletics club became involved, followed by a dance in the evening. The rail line closed, but the picnic and sports day has remained as a fun community event. Entry is $2 a person and $5 a car. Further information is available from Garath 09 439 0681. ¢

The Paparoa Community Charitable Trust is planning 14 sections ranging from 401 square metres to 896 square metres for single storey two bedroom dwellings designed for senior living, with a further 15 rural residential lots up to 5,000 square metres available as family dwellings and available on the general market. “The development will be different from retirement homes where there is often a licence to occupy,” said trust chair, Graham Taylor. “Residents will own their own land and house

Regrassing strategy key, says advisor Northland is well-known for its beautiful beaches and endless summers. It’s New Zealand’s only subtropical region and, thanks to its fertile soils, it’s been described as the cradle of agricultural farming in New Zealand. In 1769, Captain Cook wrote about seeing 40-50 acres of land cultivated and planted by Maori in the Bay of Islands. The first European farm was established by Samuel Marsden at Kerikeri in 1819, with a bull and two cows from the King’s herd. Over its long farming history, the region’s farmers have endured many challenges. Summers sometimes prove too long while heavy rain and flooding certainly aren’t unheard of. But maximising productivity regardless of the challenges is what farming is all about and it’s always been crucial to know where to turn for expert advice that is as trustworthy as it is unbiased. As Technical Sales Rep (TSR) for Whangarei, Jamie Lang does exactly that for the 203 farmers in his catchment area north of Auckland. Born and bred on a dairy farm in Ruawai, Jamie has “dabbled in most things ag – from sheep and beef to deer and tractor driving and helicopters” since graduating from Massey University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. But his roots are firmly planted in dairy and it continues to be his focus.

“Dairy is something I’m very familiar with but there’s always something to learn,” says Jamie. He learned about the importance of pre-planning when he first began as TSR early last year. Farmers were busy with regrassing and Jamie noticed a few of them seemed to lack a solid strategy. “They were saying ‘I need grass seed tomorrow’ which wasn’t ideal from a timing perspective,” says Jamie. So this season, he’s urging farmers to get in touch with their TSR early so they can help get a plan sorted. “It’s about giving technical advice, rather than trying to sell them something – that’s not my focus,” says Jamie, who reckons the ‘S’ in TSR is more appropriately referenced as ‘solutions’ rather than ‘sales’. “To me, the emphasis should really be on the ‘T’ – the technical

side of things. Farmers get enough people coming down their driveways in branded utes trying to sell them something. I know as a customer I don’t like being ‘sold’ to and at the end of the day we are here to help with the long-term growth of their farming business. And the only way to do that is to build trust by giving them the advice they need and pointing them in the right direction,” says Jamie. Being fairly new to the TSR role, Jamie is making the most of his specialist vendor reps to ensure his farmers get the best technical advice possible. Preserving wetlands crucial Following on from World Wetlands Day on February 2, Kaipara landowners are being urged to join other Northlanders in preserving environmentally important wetlands on their properties.

Often underappreciated, wetlands play a crucial role in filtering, absorbing and storing rainwater for dry periods. Northland Regional Council chairman, Bill Shepherd, says healthy wetlands are effectively the environment’s kidneys, filtering rain and storing it, a valuable attribute particularly during the period currently impacting the region. “Climate change means extreme weather events like droughts, storms and floods are on the increase, which will make our wetlands even more important to us in the future. Wetlands also help fight climate change because they store carbon better than any other habitat on the planet.” The council biodiversity manager, Lisa Forester, says historically more than a fifth of the region was once

covered in wetlands, and now less than five and a half per cent remains. During 2018 more than 20 wetlands had received funding for fencing and protection and the council aims to target 25 wetlands annually for assessment of any fencing needs and associated follow-up. Conditions are currently monitored at 27 wetlands already fenced, and this summer is the third cycle. “Pleasingly, nearly all the degraded wetlands we’re monitoring have improved their score, while those, which were already in good condition, have remained stable or improved.” She says wetland owners who have helped with fencing, pest and weed control and monitoring are thrilled with improving results. ¢

This year the weather was kinder to everyone involved in the Arapohue A&P Show, and people travelled from around Northland and Auckland to attend. Indoor entries broke a record with more than 1,100 items for judges to consider, the shearing competition was well-contested, the children’s young farmers competitions popular and the four-wheel drive area a challenging course with thrilling uphill drives for petrolhead spectators. The horse and pony sections drew good competition as riders competed to qualify for

prestigious titles such as the Williamson Kumara Open Hunter, which was won by Adam Cook on Rebel Ned, and Kaipara resident riders contested for a supreme rider award, which was won by Helen Connett on Pekarau Y Wonder. In the pleasure horse ring local rider, Tamara Lumby on Axle won a champion with reserve to Pam Morshead on Boston. ¢

A walk through history Looking at Mangawhare today it is hard to believe that this is where it all started. From as early as 1856 Mangawhare was a trading post and had a bustling river trade. On February 24, a new walkway will bring history alive. The area was the ‘metropolis of the Northern Wairoa’ until the early 1900s when, across the Kaihu River, Dargaville township began to grow. A group of local volunteers has been researching the history of the area based on the Millenium Project in the creation of the Historic River Walk. The original walk project created by Betty Biddles, Betsy Johnston and Nan Beardsall with the assistance of Marama Ingle and Brian Eastwood was opened in 2000 with a brochure, a signboard in Lower Hokianga Road and a few street signs pointing the way. The updated river walk, known as Amber Threads Tales and Trails: Butter Barques and Gum Trail, includes more sites and plaques installed at each point of interest with a photo and a short glimpse of the history associated with it. Included in the historic sites is the first fatal shooting of a policeman in New Zealand, houses, which were relocated from Te Kopuru to Mangawhare by barge and the location of the first racecourse in the Northern Wairoa. Masts from the ship Rainbow Warrior retrieved after it had been sunk alongside an Auckland wharf and where a barque capsized outside the Commercial Hotel. Mangawhare is rich in history, and a part of that history is now on display so gather up your family, get the gang together, and take a hike! along Victoria Street before crossing the Kaihu River Bridge. The trail then runs along Logan Street, up Park Road to Pou Tu Te Rangi Harding Park and returns via Park Road to River Road and back to Hokianga Road. With 31 sites to view and mostly flat terrain, the Butter Barques and Gum Trail is designed for everyone to enjoy a leisurely walk interspersed with historical facts, in an area of natural beauty. An official opening ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 24 commencing at 9.30am in Hokianga Road followed by a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 10 am and the opportunity to be one of the first to stroll the Butter Barques and Gum Trail. The trail is designed to start and stop where you choose, and for the opening day, a shuttle bus will be cruising the loop taking people up the Pou Tu Te Rangi Harding Park to take in the view and sample what is on offer from the food vendors. The bus will return to Hokianga Road to complete the circuit every hour until 1pm. Enter the short quiz and be in to win one of four prize bags. The Amber Threads Tails and Trails committee consists of Brenda Lupton, Bronwyn Bernard, Dot Gorrie, Nick Puharich, Anthea Hamlet, Raewyn Sills and Sue Curtis with the support of the Dargaville Community Development Board and funding from the Kaipara District Council, Walking Access New Zealand and Lotteries New Zealand.

Situated at the entrance to the Mangawhai Harbour is a line of stones ending in an outcrop of rock marking the southern end of the Mangawhai surf beach.

A short exhibition has opened at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery named Earth 2 Sea, showcasing works by popular artists John Ecuyer and Kevin Willcocks, whose work complements each other well — resonating with the natural world of wood.

Its origins date back to May 28, 1862, when a group of settlers came together at Samuel Mooney’s Mangawhai Hotel and mooted the idea of building a breakwater to improve safety for vessels entering the inner waterway. Subscriptions were advertised during 1862 to finance the proposed project and in 1863, Charles Haselden, secretary of the Mangawhai Harbour Improvements committee, wrote to the editor of the New Zealander raising the continued problems of access into the inner harbour. After countless delays in obtaining government funding for the project, news came in September 1864 that funding had been secured and work could commence once tenders were finalised.

The breakwater was designed by Daniel Simpson and supervised by engineer William Weaver. Immigrants under the Waikato Settlement Scheme undertook the work; during the same year with further tenders for work to be completed advertised by the Public Works Office in May 1866. In August 1866, three quarry workers were killed by rockfall. Alexander Duncan, Lawrence McWatt and William Craig McWatt all died instantly and were buried in the Mangawhai Cemetery. It is unclear when the breakwater was completed, but by 1876 it was described as 'being a ruin' due to several breaches by the tide. Time and tides have slowly eroded the breakwater — but it remains as a feature on the Mangawhai waterfront today.

My works explore the relationships between colour harmonies and surface textures, providing a vast range of possibilities through material choice,” said Kevin. Kevin comes from a building background, which combined with a love of the great outdoors, enables him to express himself freely through his art, experimenting with form, technique and materials. Drought impacting Kaipara kiwi

The Department of Conservation is issuing a public warning to be vigilant in areas of the Kaipara and Northland where kiwi inhabit. It suspects the hot summer is hardening the ground making it difficult for kiwi to forage.

Kiwi use their bills to probe the ground for food like worms and the current drought-like conditions impact the bird’s ability to find food in their usual area and forcing them out during the day. The hard ground is particularly difficult for the young whose bills are softer than those of adults. “Our advice to the public is to observe the kiwi from a distance and do not put any meat out because kiwi would not necessarily recognise it as food and it attracts predators,” said DOC biodiversity ranger, Cinzia Vestena. “Kiwi get most of their moisture from

food, but people who live in high-kiwi areas could leave a dish of water out or water patches of ground to create damp areas for the kiwi to feed. Dogs should be tied up at all times. “Last time we had a long, dry spell kiwi were found in swimming pools and troughs made from baths and fish ponds and some drowned. “An easy way to fix this is to add a plank or some bricks or rocks to low pools or troughs so kiwi can clamber out again,” she said. Any reports of kiwi in distress should be reported to DOC on 0800 362 468. ¢

During the heat of summer, it’s the sheer power of the sun which dries out the land, causing many farmers to experience anxiety about water supplies. Advancements in solar technology have allowed this same free source of energy to become the motive power behind unlocking new — and previously inaccessible — water sources. Many farms have already tapped into water sources close enough to be powered by ‘on the grid’ electricity, or rely on noisy and ineffective diesel or petrol pumps for far-flung areas, which must be monitored and manually controlled. With the latest in photovoltaic cells generating more than enough power to run submersible pumps and fill tanks, they are becoming a popular alternative. Additional recent developments include a phototropic system, with a lightsensitive ‘eye’ and a motor which turns the whole panel to follow the sun. In addition, information tech has kept pace, meaning that even faraway pumping station can be monitored, brought online or switched off via a

tablet, computer or smartphone. Over large areas, in difficult terrain or when refuelling could be an issue, the electric, self-contained and self-sustaining nature of solar pumps makes them an excellent choice. With very few moving parts and a power source, which works even through clouds, there’s less to maintain, and the initial outlay is dropping year by year as solar panels become a massproduced commodity, for use in boats, motorhomes, the auto industry and for creating ‘off the grid’ housing. Of course, there is another property of sunlight which is well employed to help provide clean and healthy drinking water on kiwi farms. p The sun is an endless source of power — and can now unlock a near-endless source of water for farmers

WATER MATTERS Knowledge is water-saving power One of the best ways to save water on the farm is by knowing exactly where and when to apply it. Too little, and pasture and crops can suffer from the lack of hydration. Too much, and a valuable resource is being wasted. The cutting edge of water saving has been made possible by information technology, building a map of the entire farm and monitoring both internal and external factors to provide targeted irrigation — controlled entirely remotely. From monitoring storage in ponds, dams and tanks, through to probes in the soil or at the base of orchard trees amid the roots, for example, a very detailed map can be built up of the underlying strata beneath the ground. That is where the action happens in terms of pasture and crops taking up water to fuel their biological processes. Between knowing how much water is available and how much is needed in various areas — which can change according to topography, isolated rainfall, exposure to sun and wind, or even the type of grasses making up the pasture content — it’s possible to work out exactly the best place to deploy those liquid resources. Overseas, where the areas of land in cultivation tend to be larger for each property, we’ve even seen the deployment of drones to scan arable

fields and report back using cameras and infra-red to gauge hydration. Combining soil data with a weather forecast can enable a computer program to make sometimes surprisingly accurate predictions and assessments on where to irrigate for the best impact. Weather data can spot incoming rain and, conversely, forthcoming hot spells. All this data can be plumbed into a computer model or overview, so it’s possible for the farmer to call up a map of the entire area in cultivation or pasture, pinpoint assets like solarpowered remote pumps or valves to activate irrigation systems, and monitor tank and dam levels. It becomes even more interesting when the question of effluent is put into the mix. Ponds can be monitored in terms not just of volume, but of pond health, sampling the gases broken

down by hard-working microbes. Equally importantly, it’s possible to combine data with weather forecasts and soil hydration maps to deploy irrigators at the right place and time, keeping

effluent in that active root zone. Once again, management via a tablet or smartphone means less time on the quad bike and more time taking care of other responsibilities around the farm. ¢
