Director of marketing and business development for Twin Coast Discovery Tours Melinda LeCompte, says this is the first time anyone has offered a customised tour for Texans that showcases New Zealand’s Auckland city and ‘stunning’ Northland. “We are an inbound Northland coach tour company. It’s really utilising the Twin Coast Discovery Highway. Our chosen guests are Texans because we believe they are a great cultural match with kiwis,” she said. “There was a gap in the market. When the Twin Coast Discovery Highway was
launched it was actually joining vendors together — not places. Subsequently Mangawhai was never a stop. That never made sense to us. “The reason we chose Texas is because they’ve never been invited before. It’s the largest state and it is culturally compatible with New Zealand in our opinion. Texans and New Zealanders have a lot in common. Texans want to buy an experience and an interaction. They want to come and shake your hand and shoot the breeze with you. This is why we believe New Zealand and Texas are friends that just haven’t met yet.”
The company is headquartered in Mangawhai and Melinda says the launch date on February 1 was a strategic decision to reflect the celebration of two more cultures coming together — Tex-kiwi. The first ‘Eight Day Taste Of New Zealand Tour’ will commence in mid March. In the meantime they will be running mini-tours showcasing day one and two, for people in New Zealand, over the next six weeks. Tour director Richard Te Haara says: “Tourism is all about people. He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.” Proudly Supporting

p The Dargaville Firearms and Militaria Collectors Club is hosting the 7th annual Dargaville Gun Show on Saturday, February 17 at the Community Hall on Hokianga Road, 9.30am to 2.30pm. President John Dahlin says this is a great opportunity to see an interesting side of collecting which is not usually in the public eye. “Whether your interest is the sporting, hunting or historic aspect of firearms or swords, knives and bayonets, or perhaps other interesting items; here is an extremely friendly environment to see whether you’d like to be part of it too, or just have a good few hours away from the mower or the housework.” Pictured: Club president John Dahlin and the winner of a previous door prize Shayne from Baylys Beach with his son.

Two members of the Dargaville Aeroclub are looking forward to their 16th birthday this year, when they will get their Recreational Pilot Licence and be allowed to fly solo.
A new initiative from the Spark Foundation and 20/20 Trust through Te Roroa Learning Assistance and the Dargaville Public Library will help to bridge the digital divide.

Kairos Tahere lives in Auckland but visits his grandparents, who live at the end of the Dargaville Aeroclub runway, most school holidays. He is currently training for his Private Pilots Licence (PPL) and has done 11 hours of flying. “I can’t wait until my 16th birthday this year, so I can start my flying solo and the 35 hours required for my PPL. My long-term dream is to become a commercial pilot for our very own Air New Zealand,” he says. “I would like to thank Murray Foster for being the best instructor I could have asked for.
“His dedication and passion for the club, passion for flying, patience and experience with me and his many students, makes for the best environment to start and advance your flying skills.” Fellow member Liam Sandford attends Ruawai College and started flying when he was 11-years-old. He enjoys recreational flying and may look into making flying a career. “They are both picking it up very well. The younger ones tend to absorb a lot of information easily,” said Dargaville Aeroclub chief flight instructor Murray Foster. ¢

Wednesday Crafts works to provide people of all abilities with social and mental stimulation and the committee is now looking for sponsors to ensure the service can continue.
February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and the Ovarian Cancer Support Group members want to spread the message.
p From left: Thelma Montgomery, Audrey Lappin and Enid Hudson with their creations at Wednesday Crafts
Every Wednesday, people are invited to gather at the Greenways Community Centre to try their hand at a new craft project with the help of volunteers. “The aim of Wednesday Crafts is to create community spirit. We work on the development of skills as well as friendship — with an emphasis on socialising. It also helps with the general development of physical skills and provides mental stimulation,” said coordinator Lilian Radich. People from Norfolk Court, the Clyde Street Home and members of the Dargaville community are regular participants. “Everyone has varying abilities. It doesn’t matter if you’ve
never done something before. Anyone can come along and learn,” said Lilian. Volunteers prepare and serve morning tea and lunch to the group of sometimes up to 40 people each week. “We appreciate all the volunteers and material donors, but at the moment we are focussing on looking for sponsorship. “This is a community service. There is nothing else in the community that provides a place to focus on social and developmental skills like Wednesday Crafts.” To offer sponsorship contact Lilian on 09 439 77 99 or Cynthia 09 439 5895. ¢
Ovarian cancer is often not identified, until it has spread significantly. As a result, there is just a 42 per cent survival rate beyond five years. Support group spokesperson, Lisa Finucane, says that ovarian cancer is often not talked about daily life, but they hope to change that. “The four main symptoms are: persistent stomach/pelvic pain, persistent bloating, difficulty eating/ feeling full more quickly, and needing to wee more frequently. Alongside these are back pain, changes in bowel habits (going more often or a lot less), abnormal vaginal bleeding, and extreme tiredness for no obvious reason,” she says. Rachel Brown co-founded the New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation and then the Ovarian Cancer Support Group with
her sister, following the death of their mother from ovarian cancer more than 10 years ago. “We want women to know to see their GPs as soon as possible, and to keep a record of the symptoms to help support a speedier diagnosis. There are online symptom diaries and phone apps available, which can help provide more clarity around the severity and regularity of symptoms. “This could be the difference between a cancer that is contained and can be treated, to one that has spread and frankly has a very serious consequence. “It’s time that we talked about symptoms of this and other cancers, the same way we are comfortable talking about breast lumps and dodgy moles. Awareness leads to better vigilance — and will save lives.” ¢

Council monitoring iconic tree u by Ayla Miller
The Kaipara District Council has undertaken inspections of the protected Moreton Bay Fig tree in Pahi and is monitoring its health. The tree which is believed to have been planted circa 1860s, in the early pioneer days, has been infested with a pest called Fig psyllid (mycopsylla fici), which has impacted the foliage. Wings and wheels open day
Gathering the good oil u by Christine Yardley
A touch of Mediterranean lifestyle is taking hold at Whakapirau where the odd olive tree in the garden has sparked plans for an annual festival.
General aviation and microlight aircraft of several different types as well as collectable cars are to be on show at Mangawhai on Sunday, February 18 as part of a fly-in with planes expected from Hamilton and Tauranga in the south and from Kerikeri in the north.
Local resident Jacky Caddick, realised her backyard olive grove had produced far too many olives to preserve and yet not enough to press for oil. Avoiding waste, she asked around and found that The Olive Place in Wellsford was willing to press small amounts of olives. She then wondered if there might be others with the same problem. “I had no idea how many olive trees were actually in the village, so I walked around and spotted quite a few. I sent an email out to see if anyone else was interested and everyone was very positive.” As a result, armed with buckets, rakes and mats, the so-called ‘Whaka Pluckers’ began the village olive harvest. “We were on a mission,” says Jacky. “We had to pick all the olives in the morning and then get them down to the press that afternoon; because the sooner they are pressed the better the quality. In the scale of things, we didn’t have that many olives. We got kilogrammes off some trees and only grams from others. However, at the press, even though we only had about 50kg of olives, we were treated as though we were the biggest producers
p Microlights, collectable cars and general aviation will be on display at the Mangawhai domain
“It is not an air show although the aircraft will be available for public viewing at close range,” said local Steve Williams, who has been working with the Northland Microlight Club and the Mangawhai Domain Committee to organise the event. An invitation has gone out to aircraft owners from the upper North Island and a good turnout is expected in spite of the limited length of runway available. “Members of the Wellsford and Warkworth Vintage Car Club will be bringing several of their vehicles along for viewing. Children will be able to be taken for a short drive in the domain, as long as they are accompanied by a parent. The numbers will be determined
7
by the number of vehicles available. “This is a fun event for the Mangawhai community and surrounding districts at Mangawhai Domain from 10.00am. Entry is free and there will be food available for purchase or just bring a picnic lunch.” No dogs are permitted that day onto the domain for safety reasons due to the field being used as a temporary airfield. Weather cancellation will be advertised on the Mangawhai Domain website — mangawhaidomain.org.nz on the evening of Thursday February 15 or Friday morning February 16 and on the local Mangawhai Facebook pages. In the event of cancellation an alternative date will be considered. ¢

in the country.” At the end of the day 7.5 litres of olive oil were brought back to Whakapirau, where the olive growers celebrated in style with a traditional tasting session of oil dipped, homemade sourdough bread. Since then the idea has blossomed, and with financial support from the Whakapirau Residents and Ratepayers Association and a grant from Fonterra, more olive trees have been bought and planted on Karaka Green — the local reserve. “There has been such a positive spin-off,” Jacky explains. “We are now planning an annual olive festival. A fun event where everyone picks and we end up with a long, Italian style lunch on the village green.” ¢

Crime camera volunteers sought The installation of 28 CCTV cameras to monitor downtown Dargaville is proceeding apace under the supervision of the police, the Dargaville Community Development Board and the Dargaville Business Forum, with the aim of reducing crime and disorder and enhancing public safety — but eyes are needed to monitor the camera images. The project is expected to be up and running within weeks, and the DCDB is looking for volunteers to man the screens, which will be installed at the Dargaville Police Station at the nerve centre of stage one of the Dargaville Community Surveillance Project. “We are expecting this system will be completed at the end of March or early April,” said Constable Reuben Cohen. “We have accepted the invitation to have the cameras monitored from the police station that satisfies the security and privacy law. Successful applicants will be vetted and inducted into the police station in order to volunteer.” This vetting policy applies to crime prevention cameras installed at fixed sites in public places for a general crime prevention purpose and operated in conjunction with police. Such cameras are not used to maintain surveillance on individuals
or groups — they are to prevent and detect criminal offences in identified high crime areas. Cameras are used for the deterrence or immediate detection of criminal offences and must be operated in a manner that complies with the Privacy Act 1993. The cameras will stream their footage to six 40 inch screens at the station, which will be monitored 24/7. Each screen has the potential to be divided into 16 sections. Project manager, Diane Miller, says the community has been proactive in support for this project. Development Board chair, Allan Mortensen, says the main aim is prevention rather than apprehension. “We deserve a safe community and we need to have one if we want to encourage people here to live, work and play.” To register interest in volunteering, contact DCDB info@dcdb.nz or phone 027 525 8222.
Taking on Triathlon challenge More than 300 people are expected to participate in the annual Avoca Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon on Saturday, February 24.
p Crowds like this are expected to gather again at the annual Avoca Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon
This year the women’s reigning champion from 2016 and 2017 Carolyn Younger, who completed the long course in 1hr 36mins in 2017, is returning to the event and will face the challenge again. The triathlon has a selection of different events including adult, individual and teams categories on either a long or short course, as well as a kids’ individual or team event for those between 7 and 15 years. Adults can choose the kayak option to replace the swim leg. Sport Northland events manager Azelia Parkinson says it is great to have these options available, as it means almost anyone can take part. The long course event which consists
CAR OF THE WEEK!
of a 700m swim or 1.5km kayak, 20km cycle and 8.5km run often proves to be a challenge. “The cycle course includes some significant hills and with the run course being largely off-road, this adds further mental and physical demands on athletes. Bearing this in mind, it is great to see so many taking up the challenge and entering this event.” The short course event, which consists of a 350m swim, 10km cycle and 3.8km run will attract many beginner triathletes and those wishing to have a go. A prize giving will be held at the end of the day, when the plaques will be presented to the winners in the adult section. ¢

Otamatea HarbourCare’s hero u by Liz Clark
At 91 years of age, Otamatea HarbourCare Society’s most senior volunteer, Zoe Roadley, says she’s always liked ‘grubbing in the dirt’ at the society’s Paparoa-based native plant nursery.
The show must go on With heavy rain throughout last Saturday, the Northern Wairoa A and P Association’s Arapohue Show went ahead under trying conditions and an ‘absolute bog.’ The rain and mud made it almost impossible to get in and out of the grounds according to show president Richard Alspach. At least 50mm of rain fell on areas around the showgrounds south of Dargaville, but it wasn’t enough to stop the 126th event going ahead. “It had only ever been cancelled twice,” said Mr Alspach. “We had a discussion on Friday, and we said: “This is a rural show. We will have a show. It was atrocious conditions, it was an absolute bog.” Three tractors were employed hauling trucks in and out, including those carrying the sheep.
The show was part of the ANZ Northland Shearing Championship, and while two of the teams were absent in apparent anticipation of a rain-off, there were still 21 shearers who performed despite the lack of spectators. “I don’t think this would have happened in a city,” said Mr Alspach. “They pitched in, had a laugh, and got on with it.” Neville Osborne, of Dargaville, won the open final, repeating his win of a week earlier at Paparoa, as did Wellsford’s Alan Boler in the intermediate grade. The senior final was won by Dan Berger, of Ahuroa. ¢
p Zoe Roadley — far right — and fellow volunteers love getting their hands dirty
Mrs Roadley became involved about two-and-a-half years ago, after planting days were carried out on the Roadley family farm at Batley. “The farm has had planters once a year for the last two or three years and when they finished their day’s work, we put on morning tea and lunch for them. But, digging and planting are beyond me now.” she said Along with other volunteers, Mrs Roadley travels weekly to the nursery in Paparoa to process up to 1,500 native plant seedlings including flax, coprosma
and manuka. She says she has learned a lot about native plant varieties, and values the importance of protecting the shores of the Kaipara Harbour for future generations “It’s going to take a while, we have a very big harbour.” Mrs Roadley plans to continue volunteering for as long as she is able, and is encouraging anyone interested in the work of the society to get involved by helping out at the nursery or at planting days. Celebrating sporting history u by Ayla Miller
The Dargaville Rugby and Sports Club will celebrate 125 years of sporting history in April. Lifetime members Gary Murdoch and David Fagan remember spending many hours on the field and in the club rooms, when the showers were cold and the beer was warm. The club has come a long way since then and present president of management, Richie Anderson, says he is enjoying carrying on the history of the club although there have been many improvements to facilities since. Gary joined the club in 1953. “We used to call the club rooms ‘The Red Shed’. There were holes in the floor and we only had cold showers,” he said. The new building on the original site at Rugby Park, Dargaville, was built in four stages and over the years grew to include squash, netball and later hockey. Gary remembers the sanding of the paddocks as ‘a massive undertaking’. “It went from being a bog to being one of the best playing fields in Northland,” said David. “It was always a good atmosphere, when the wives and girlfriends
p From left: Lifetime member David Fagan, present president of management Richie Anderson and lifetime member Gary Murdoch
would get together and put on a magnificent spread.” Richie says he is now working to get the club more exposure, financial
security and resources.“Currently the food tent at the Northland Field Days is our major fundraiser.” The anniversary celebrations will be held at Rugby Club on April 27 and 28. There will be a Golden Oldies Challenge for rugby, netball and squash on the Friday, followed by a mix and
mingle in the clubrooms. Tiger Woods’ ex caddie Steve Williams will be a guest speaker at the Dargaville Town Hall on Saturday night. For more information contact drsc125yrs@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page: Dargaville Rugby and Sports Club 125th. ¢

It is showtime in Kaipara u by Ann Morgan
The field days has grown to become a major fixture on the national farming calendar since it first began as a simple agricultural expo and the Northland Field Days Committee is set to have a place to call home, as the final touches are put on a new office building at Awakino Point. Held in Dargaville and now recognised as Northland’s largest annual agricultural event, the gates are open to the 34th annual show between March 1 and 3. “I think it will be really good for the team to have somewhere to base ourselves. It’s good to be on location, so when you’re talking about things you actually can go and look at the site,” says vice president Rachael de Vries. The committee has been working out of small portable buildings since the field days have been held at the current site. “We have been talking about having a building where we can meet with sponsors and exhibitors for many years, so it’s rather exciting seeing it coming to fruition.” The committee is now waiting for the progress inspection and if all goes to plan, the building will be up and running for the upcoming field days. “It’s somewhere where people can come and see our administration staff member. We can also have past presidents’ pictures on the wall and

really know our history. The field days is a local event the whole family can enjoy — and one that won’t break the bank,”she says. “We continue to champion all things farming and agricultural — from the latest innovations in fencing and agriculture, sawmill demonstrations through to lifestyle and market exhibitors under the Lifestyle Pavilion marquees, and a specific area for market-type products.” Top of the list for farmers will be the comprehensive trade exhibits, with the latest and greatest in implements, machinery and innovations to enhance their business, while they and their families can enjoy a wide range of entertainment. “A major attraction again this year will be chaps, spurs and cowboy hats, with cutting horse displays and the cowboy challenge, which is a new event.
This is all things cowboy and certainly interesting. “There is the Young Farmer cattle judging and the quad skills competition, face painting for children and the tractor pull challenge.” Other show attractions include the Clydesdales, musicians, NEST rescue helicopter, Caro’s Crazy Critters mobile farm, Kidzone, Sheep ‘n Show, Logger Sports, sheep dog trials, and lawn mower races. “There will be numerous delicious food and drink options on site for sale. Northland Field Days is not only organised, managed and staffed by volunteers, but we have kept the costs realistic to encourage more families to attend.” The ticket prices are the same as last year with adult day pass tickets priced at $12, and children are at $5 each, while $30 will admit a family of two adults and three children. ¢

Welcome to Mangawhai Run against family violence u by Ayla Miller

Te Whai Community Trust is a relatively new organisation based in Mangawhai and recently acquired premises in the historic village. “Now we have these premises we need to fundraise to keep up the momentum. We are primarily a dropin service where we connect the community with services,” said board member Helen Price. “Family violence is an issue in the community, and this event is about raising awareness that it happens and there is somewhere you can go for help. You are not alone and you shouldn’t be ashamed of it. “We think the more conversations about family violence the better. If it becomes something we all talk about, then there will be less of a stigma around it, and people will be able to ask for help.” The money raised through this event will go towards continuing the work at Te Whai and paying guest speakers to p Te Whai Community Trust board member Isabel Hollis

come to Mangawhai for information evenings. “It’s a way of doing things without having to apply for grants all the time. There’s more social need and less money to go around.” Fellow board member Isabel Hollis says there are limited statistics around family violence as much of it goes unreported.
“People are not aware that it’s happening but it is.” The bike run is happening on Sunday, March 4 starting at noon from the Three Furlongs in Kaiwaka and finishing at The Mangawhai Tavern where a barbecue lunch will be available. Tickets are $30 pp. Participants can register on Eventbrite or from 11am on the day. ¢

Ranger range expanding
17
FA R M I N G
u by Andy Bryenton
The Polaris Ranger has long been a favourite on Kiwi farms, for its combination of good fuel economy and utilitarian power. Now the range is expanding, offering new options for the rural trade, which include more power — and more practicality. The Polaris Ranger 570 is an exercise in ticking all the boxes. Polaris engineers have gone for the superlatives here, ensuring that they can claim best in class payload, engine power, and towing capacity. The heart of the beast is a 44 horsepower, 567cc single cylinder four-stroke, once again set low in the frame for maximum ground clearance. Polaris have added power steering to this already popular package, and the bigger, more accommodating 570 model is available with a suite of enhancements to make it fit for many different purposes. For those who want even more room and load space, the 570 mill is available in a ‘full size’ three seater frame. The same could be said for its forthcoming bigger brother — Polaris have long established dominance in the sport section of the market with their big, brutal RZR series, tearing up the track in such events as the ORANZ off-road championships and
even the gruelling Baja rally in North America. Now a Ranger with the same displacement takes the field, with a list of over 100 improvements gleaned from customer feedback. Doubling the horsepower of the 570, the Ranger 1000 is uncompromising, and while it may in fact exceed the amount of sheer grunt needed for regular farm work, those who face particularly tough conditions or who need to lug massive loads will find a reliable friend in this new iteration of the Ranger. With field days nearly here, local Polaris dealerships are preparing for a busy season. They will be there in force with a whole range of machines on offer, from the evergreen Ranger 570 through to the General, the Ace and the Sportsman quad bike range. There’s a reason these are familiar names around the farms of Northland — come and find out why when Polaris roll out their 2018 display! ¢
