Matakohe Architecture and Urbanism, one of the creative forces behind the ongoing Dargaville Racing Club development, received the Henderson Reeves Excellence in Business — Small Business Award. “Flax and Fibre is using harakeke for weaving and building on Māori traditional techniques to develop contemporary artworks. We are confident there is an exciting, thriving, long term future for Flax and Fibre,” said the judges in the creative industries category. “It’s humbling,” says Flax and Fibre’s Heather Carrigan. “I feel completely overwhelmed by the support I’ve received after the win. “My business is carried by the aroha and awhi of my community, and I am very grateful to my mentors and kaiako; Veranoa Hetet and Whāea Katie Tito whom our Pā Harakeke ‘Ngā Kōrari O Keita’ is named after. p The Northland Transportation Alliance, which maintains the Kaipara District Council’s roading infrastructure, has deployed a new crane and grapple truck to make safe, short work of dangerous trees overhanging roadways. It is operated with a remote control unit and robotically removes trees in hazardous places. It minimises the risk of workers who would have to climb and cut trees themselves and ensures that fallen trees and branches can’t cause accidents or road blockages. Units like these have become the norm worldwide, and now the technology is here to help the KDC clean up.

Travel back to the 1950s

Mayor’s Message

u by Andy Bryenton

Kia ora,

Significant Natural Areas (SNAs)

Covid Omicron case numbers are increasing across New Zealand and in other parts of Northland but not in Kaipara District. At time of writing this there are no active cases in Kaipara, though there is a positive wastewater test in Mangawhai, a lead indicator. People need to be prepared for a rapid change in the story. I encourage people to continue taking up the vaccination and booster options, getting tested if feeling unwell, scanning into businesses, wearing masks, maintaining social distances of at least 1m and regularly washing hands. Prevention is better than cure.

Rural subdivision rules and urban density rules.

Considering the current level of Kaipara District covid cases (currently zero) Council proposes to meet in person for the District Plan Review Briefing on 16 February and also the Council Meeting on 23 February. Our preference is to meet in person, while taking a precautionary approach under the Red Traffic Light rules, to get best efficiency and effective decision-making from elected members. While there are limited active Covid cases in the community, we want to make big progress on the large work programme ahead of Council, knowing that when Omicron is virulent in the community it will not be possible to meet together safely. And at that point it may be months where Council will be meeting online only rather than in person. Meetings are broadcast live on YouTube whether in person or online. In the next few months we’ll be working on subjects that are demanding and I want the best from our Council as we proceed. Some of the interesting content in the District Plan Review includes: •

The Dargaville Museum is preparing a time-warp to the decade of rock ‘n’ roll, as a special exhibition on the 1950s takes shape, opening in late February.

We all want to get right our Draft District Plan, and it is key to progressing our future here. In other progress on Kaipara roads, Season Two of the Unsealed Road PGF projects is completed. Waipoua River Road sealing project is right on track, Kaiwaka Footbridges are too. For the Mangawhai Shared Path project we’re awaiting confirmation from Waka Kotahi of their funding contribution for Stage Two. And for Pouto Road sealing project Council is looking to fix a recent $487,000 funding project shortfall by using Retained Earnings from last year’s financial surplus so there will be no impact on rates for next year. The regrettable situation we’re in is not ideal but Council looks to complete the project with these funds rather than using 10km worth of heavy road metalling budget or stopping the $6,550,000 project. In these inflationary times Council is not immune from cost increases to these significant capital projects, just the same as for anyone who’s trying to build a house or even fill a car with petrol. We’re all living and working with new challenges. Stay safe as you go. Ngaˉ mihi, Mayor Jake Dr Jason Smith, Mayor of Kaipara District

p Dance hall days — Dargaville on a 1950s Saturday night featured dancing and movie double features, with taverns closing at 6pm

“Those who had the pleasure of living through those times will remember the small things that tell a story,” says museum spokesperson and co-curator of the exhibit, Lyn Trounson. “Those who did not may still recall some of these items, as they built things to last back then,” she added. Lyn referred to the many commonplace yet iconic homewares and brand-named products that have been prepared for display. The exhibit will feature segments on home life, work, school, sports and the technology of the 1950s, but the overarching theme is about how Dargaville folk lived in those days. Lyn says that everything from school books to marching band uniforms will be on show to evoke memories. There will also be a memory wall as part of the display.

An interactive space where people can write down their own recollections of what was a tumultuous decade, but where the post-war dream saw New Zealand leaving Britain’s shadow and looking to the future. “It’s the time when people of my generation need to start telling their stories, or they will be lost forever,” says Lyn. “The 1950s was a time of dance halls and picture shows, late-night Friday shopping, sports on Saturday and a more simple world.” Museum staff are currently assembling the exhibition from many archival photos, news items, artefacts, books and loans from the public. It is expected to open next week and run through until Easter and beyond. ¢

Irrigation brings verdant growth

New way of learning in Ruawai

u by Andy Bryenton

Two test sites established to prove the case for irrigation and crop growth in west Kaipara are growing green despite the hot summer weather, delivering positive news for the future of local farming.

Last week, Ruawai College started school with a new curriculum, changing the way students choose their learning path and how skills are taught.

The two sites, at Te Kōpuru and Maunganui Bluff, were established in November as part of Kaipara KickStart. Concerns over wastewater u by Andy Bryenton

Te Kōpuru locals voiced concerns about the abnormal function of the town’s wastewater treatment system last week, with video surfacing of what appeared to be leakage into Makaka Creek. The video, posted on social media, came just ahead of Kaipara District Council action to assess and repair the system, which serves the village of approximately 200 dwellings. It is at the core of rural water management reform policies and the $1.2 billion Jobs for Nature initiative, which has seen environmental projects funded across the Kaipara District. “Wetlands provide numerous benefits, including protecting and improving water quality, and providing a rich habitat for p Environment Minister David Parker says Jobs for Nature taonga species,” Conservation funding is being released to help restore wetlands Minister Kiri Allan said. The Taharoa Domain Committee, which oversees the Kai Iwi Lakes, has received a comprehensive report on the 2021 to 2022 holiday period, revealing a successful season despite restrictions. A total of 4,413 people stayed at the popular holiday campgrounds this summer, not counting January numbers. It rivals the population of Dargaville and is down only slightly on the recordbreaking 2020 to 2021 season, mainly due to distancing rules and Covid passport regulations. “To assist with social distancing in the campgrounds, capacity p A good report card for Kai Iwi Lakes, with this summer’s tourist influx topping the 4,000 visitor mark despite Covid at Pine Beach and related cutbacks Promenade Point was reduced by 20%,” says KDC customer steps in reducing pest species such as support manager Nadine Spring. possums and rats. The rapid spread of Omicron heralds “a time when personal responsibility comes to the fore, with the red level two response to swing in when cases reach 1,000 per day,” says Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith. The government was expected to move the country into phase two of its Omicron response plan at the 1,000 cases mark, meaning the number of isolation stays come down and allow critical workers who are close contacts to continue working. Dr Smith said he had been advised that Kaipara District Council’s West Coast-Central Ward councillor, Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock, attended the anti-vaccine protest at parliament grounds. “People have a right to protest, but I worry about the possible spread of Covid from that gathering,” he said. “Phase two means more personal responsibility to monitor your own health and, of course, be fully vaccinated.” Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock has not confirmed her status, although the remaining seven councillors have confirmed they have been fully vaccinated, and passports are also required for KDC’s elected representatives using meeting rooms. A new Omicron case was noted in Mangawhai as this edition went to print, with the latest Northland figures showing there were 10 new cases

The Ministry of Health will no longer be advising if locations of interest are associated with Omicron cases, and there were no Northland locations notified. ¢

Local real estate professional Selma Peters has won the coveted Rate My Agent agent of the year award for Northland in an annual competition voted on by the customers. “I’ve been working in the industry for 28 years, and this means a lot to me because it’s from the public; it’s them who have elected me,” says Selma. “I drive miles and miles to support my customers and give them personal face to face service. Retirement & Lifestyle Healing properties of the outdoors u by Andy Bryenton

It’s an acknowledged fact that staying active can play a big part in better health as we get older. However, high impact sports and heavy exercise may not be possible forever. The solution is a simple one, and it’s been found to have far-reaching health effects beyond the merely physical. A study commissioned by the US government’s Centres for Disease Control into reversing the problems of sedentary lifestyles in older people found that walking in forests benefits both the body and mind, to an extent far beyond what was thought possible. “Walking is a tremendously good activity for senior citizens. It’s cheap, it’s simple, almost anybody can do it,” says Doctor Michael Pratt, the acting chief for the Physical Activity and Health Branch at the CDC. “It helps seniors and has very real benefits for maintaining mobility and independence.”

The benefits of low-impact walking are well known, but there are subtle differences when that walking is done outdoors amid nature. First of all, blood pressure, anxiety and mood are all improved by the calm of all that green. It’s a deep-brain response, from our past as forest dwellers. Being surrounded by the oxygen output, scent and colour of a forest make human beings feel calmer and more confident. Second up is the surface you’re walking on. A treadmill or pavement is flat and works the exact same tendons, joints and muscles at all times. A forest trail is varied terrain, with changing gradients, roots, stones, and different kinds of gravel, mud, dust and dirt. Even an easy trail, suitable

Retirement & Lifestyle Giving power to the people u by Andy Bryenton

Grey Power Dargaville is back in session, as the organisation for the advancement of 50-year-olds and older embarks on a busy 2022 with an accolade for a longserving member. “June Klenner was president of Grey Power’s Kaipara association for 18 consecutive years,” says current president Stewart Quirk. “During that time, her leadership fostered a personal concern among members for the welfare of the elderly.” This week, Grey Power members honoured June’s dedication with a long service award, and a specially made badge in the shape of the owl, a symbol of Grey Power, crafted in silver by local artist Jenny Crundwell. This tribute is endorsed by New Zealand Grey Power president Jan Pentecost. With local body elections looming, discussions at the group’s town hall meetings will be keenly watched by citizens of all ages. However, there’s more to Grey Power than activism in politics, despite the fact that the roots of the movement go back to a time when superannuitants were a marginalised group politically. In 1986, the government of the day wanted to impose a surcharge on national

super, and a group of angry older citizens banded together to bring their fight to the public. After winning this battle, they remained active in the space of senior’s rights and healthcare, changing their name to Grey Power to increase their profile. That certainly worked; from a core of less than 100 in 1986, Grey Power has grown to a strength of 90,000 members across New Zealand. Along the way, Grey Power has been a strong advocate for all manner of issues, and not just for older Kiwis. While they have had notable successes in instigating the Gold Card discount scheme, lowering doctor’s bills and pharmacy fees, rolling back asset testing, implementing winter energy payments, bolstering superannuation and spot-auditing rest homes, it was also Grey Power who helped remove the interest on student loans. Better outcomes across all of society have come from their activism and focus. Though apolitical in charter, Dargaville Grey Power is the host of many open

discussions with political candidates, and these debates, panels and question times provide a valuable link to the democratic process. Perhaps most importantly, Grey Power in Dargaville is a place where friendships have been made, alongside the important work of advocacy. If you are new to the area and 50 or older, they invite you to join them. ¢

Retirement & Lifestyle Did I hear you right? u by Amy Fifita

Technology shows advancement in many industries, and hearing impairment has been benefitting from these new ideas. Seniors can be tech-savvy, too; you can amplify your conversations or mute nuisance with a tap of a screen or hearing aid. Wouldn’t it be grand to silence a conversation momentarily? You can do it without being vocal about it, too, without causing offence. It may be difficult at times to adjust to the change, but think of the advantages. You have more options and control with the advancement in hearing aid technology. Smartphone apps or physical prompts give you power over what you hear in your surroundings. You can turn down that child outside the supermarket blasting his opinion of good music. When you’re at a family function, you can focus your hearing aid on who you’re conversing with. Technology allows for that these days. Younger generations have smartwatches; the older

generation has hearing aids with the capabilities of what a smartwatch monitors. It is an integration of having a speaker in your ear that can measure vital signs too. Starkey Hearing Technology’s Livio AI can follow physical and cognitive activity and even translate a total of 27 languages. It is practical. While younger people have a band on their arm as a trend, more experienced generations can use this information to track health concerns and improve their quality of life. Other areas of technology are benefitting the hearing aid industry. Bluetooth LE 5.2 is an improvement introduced in 2020. This update enables hearing aids to use less power, decreased sound delay, better sound quality and faster connectivity. It is already common to have Bluetooth in these hearing

devices. The enhancement has increased quality and improved the relationship we have with phones, radios and televisions. Companies are adapting to new issues that this pandemic has caused. Signia has features like Mask Mode that enables more audible sound when someone is talking through a face mask. Alternatively, you could use it to catch out your surly teenage grandchild when they are mumbling words under their breath. Youngsters can get away with a lot these days, don’t they? Some modern devices don’t suit all people in every generation. With these collaborations, hearing aids can make life easier or more comfortable. At least with this, you have the choice of what and who you listen to. Now you only have to convince the government to increase the subsidy for them. ¢

Get hearing aids from as little as $450 with the govt subsidy Live life to the fullest with hearing aids from $450 with the government subsidy. New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 16 years and over are entitled to the Government subsidy of $1,022.22 toward a pair of hearing aids, once every six years. Free hearing checks are available for anyone aged 18 and over.

Drive safely as school days return u by Andy Bryenton

Schools are back in session, and that means a return to early morning and mid-afternoon school runs for many parents. It’s a perfect time to ensure that the family car is as safe as possible.

Insurance companies, police and emergency services all keep statistics on road safety. They have found that there are a few common and easy tricks to making your vehicle safer, even on unpredictable country roads. The single most important factor is where ‘the rubber meets the road’. Worn or damaged tyres are a leading cause of loss of traction, especially on loose gravel and roads with potholes and dips. With 12 months between warrant checks for many cars, testing the tread depth all around is a good idea before getting back into the school run routine. Make sure to take a close look at the inside edge of tyres; this area is hard to spot on a glance and can be worn down quickly by either poor wheel alignment or roads with steep camber. When manoeuvring cars around children, a reversing camera can be a life-saver. Many accidents take place on driveways and at school pick up and drop off zones, where fast-moving

Cars tend to have bigger window ‘a’ and ‘c ’pillars now, meaning that blindspot warning systems are a bonus, and additional mirrors may be a good idea to cover all four corners while in traffic. Finally, mechanics are unanimous in this piece of advice. If you hear a strange new noise, a rubbing, squeaking, chattering or scraping sound, get it checked out. Things stuck in brakes, loose tie rod ends, busted suspension and worn shocks can all cause rattles, knocks and squeals, and these tell-tale signs of abnormal operation can help prevent a failure at speed. Get checked out with a full service at your local garage soon, and drive safe. ¢

youngsters can get behind the blind spot of today’s tall and wide SUVs. A reversing camera is simple to install and can give a clear view of your surroundings in these circumstances. Knowing who is around you on the road and signalling your intentions clearly can drastically reduce your chance of an accident. Daylight savings and warm weather are here now, but preparing for rain, darkness and cold means checking your electrical systems, mirrors, window demisters, wipers and indicators for electrical faults. Many of these come down to issues with the battery, which should definitely be checked out when you’re in for your next service.

Saving gas saves money u by Amy Fifita

The price of fuel has been taxing kiwi pockets recently, and we need to keep in mind ideas on how to make the tank last. With inflation increasing to 5.9%, the cost of fuel and essential items have become more expensive. Luckily there are ways to help decrease the usage of fuel that doesn’t require purchasing a new hybrid or electric vehicle. Many petrol stations offer discount cards. If you don’t want to pay the full price — take advantage of this. Most major supermarkets supply fuel discounts with their receipts. You’ll have noticed the difference in prices when driving down the main streets. It will be apparent where the best deals are. Be mindful too. You don’t want to travel half an hour across town to save a few cents when you’ve used as many or more getting there. General maintenance is an important factor, plus it’s good for your car. Check tyre pressure, engine oil, transmission, washer and brake fluid. Keep on top of these small tasks and try not to overfill your engine oil unless you want the seals to leak. The great debate. Do windows down or air conditioner (A/C) use more fuel? The vehicle year and speed have an impact. Cars made after 2000 are likely using the newer R-134a refrigerant, so you can enjoy the A/C on low while doing highway speeds. Windows down are fine when

driving at 50km/h. However, the higher your speed and the more windows down — the more drag on your vehicle. Clean out your car and get rid of unnecessary weight. The extra load has an impact on your fuel usage and gives you the chance to decide what is essential to store in your vehicle. Plan your trips and decide whether it is walkable. A short promenade to the dairy is not only good for you, but great for your fuel tank. Many families have two cars

and, when possible try to include multiple tasks in one trip. Think about how you drive. Yes, flooring it can be a thrill, but what does it cost you at the fuel pump? Constant braking doesn’t help either, and an experienced driver can read the road to implement this. Saving on costs doesn’t stop at purchase; your habits can save you the extra expense. Consider these tips and see the difference. ¢
