The money was collected by the local Rapid Relief Team (RRT), which has been formed, along with other team branches around the country to provide meals during emergency operations, such as major fires or other disasters. In this case, the RRT gathered at Paparoa Farmer’s Market to offer

p When the Dargaville Sportsville complex was opened, space was allocated for a petanque court, and since then the number of players has doubled. Spokesperson, Alison Robertson, said they all enjoy playing on the surfaced courts, which are much slower than the grass where they previously near the Dargaville swimming pools. The players meet each Monday morning at 10am and periodically compete against teams from Whangarei, Kamo and Bream Bay. Anyone interested in playing is welcome to attend.

p “It’s either sheer laziness or they don’t want to pay dump fees,” said Dargaville resident, Brian Dally. He was extremely frustrated to find a trailer load of personal rubbish dumped in the ditch outside his Beach Road home recently. “If they have to buy the bags anyway why not leave them at the dump,” he wondered. Kaipara District Council had been advised to make arrangements to have the rubbish removed. Illegal dumping has cost the council around $800 a week in the past.

Meeting for mums u by Jill Dickie

Prospective mums have the opportunity to help plan for future maternity services in the Dargaville area at an upcoming consultation meeting hosted by Northland District Health Board staff.

p Dargaville Hospital operations manager, Jen Thomas, and NDHB midwifery director and service manager for maternity services, Deborah Pittam, look forward to discussing prospective mums needs at the upcoming meeting

The meeting will be held at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club on Tuesday, February 26, from 10am to 2.30pm. Lunch will be provided for attendees. “The consultation is a part of the NDHB quality and safety programme, giving consumers the opportunity to have their say on the available services they require long term,” said NDHB midwifery director and service manager for maternity services, Deborah Pittam. Pittam said there had been positive feedback from visiting other centres and people have shared their personal experiences and challenges. The services currently on offer include

antenatal midwifery care and all postnatal care, with a midwife on-site daily plus on call. There are also two lead maternity carers available. Operations manager at Dargaville Hospital, Jen Thomas, said there is space for another one or two community midwives in the Kaipara District. If anyone is unable to attend the upcoming meeting, they can either pass any questions to a friend who will be attending or email coordinator Sue Bree at sue.bree@northlanddhb.org.nz. There will be a consumer survey available in the near future and people should watch the NDHB facebook page and their website ndhb.org.nz. ¢

Surprise funding for medical centre

p Murray Foster of the Rapid Relief Team (front left) and Paparoa Medical Centre chair, Graham Taylor with the big cheque

Mr Taylor said the amount means the medical centre is closer to opening. “Paparoa Medical Society is overwhelmed by the extent of the support from RRT. The community has really thrown themselves behind this fundraising effort for the new medical centre. “The sum of $55,000 is considerable and will go a long way towards reducing the medical society’s reliance on costly bank overdraft funding. The building programme is well underway, and this support means we can complete the job. If all goes according to plan, the building work

should be completed by early April.” The medical society had to find $350,000 to bring the old Otamatea County Council building at Paparoa up to modern compliance standards. The completed facility will be operated by Coast to Coast Health Care Ltd with additional space to accommodate the Paparoa library, which shut down for the duration of the project. Mr Taylor said the society is also “very grateful to many individuals and organisations from the Paparoa community for financial support. As a charity, donations are eligible for a 33 per cent tax refund.”

Community patrols The Dargaville Community Development Board is inviting interested people to contact them to assist in the set-up of regular community patrols in the town.

Record dog trial entries u by Jill Dickie

The sound of whistles, calls and dogs barking will emanate from the Omamari area from February 22 until February 24 when the Omamari Sheep Dog Trial Club host a major competition at the property of Jim and Dawn Miller.

p Members of the Dargaville Community Development Board met with representatives Robert Patterson from Community Patrols of New Zealand, Phil Kahotea from NZ Police and Haki Wihongi from Maori Wardens, to discuss implementing a community patrol programme

The community patrols are made up of everyday residents who want to give something back to their community, either as committee members or as volunteers acting as eyes and ears for the police. They will undertake surveillance, watch out for stolen cars and report signs of suspicious activity in the neighbourhood, thereby reducing the incidence and effects of criminal activity. “Every patroller is fully trained, with the emphasis on personal safety, and they work together in small teams under the guidance of the police,” said

Community Patrols of New Zealand representative, Robert Patterson. “In Northland, we currently have six community patrol groups. These valued teams support the efforts of the police by observing and reporting to reduce crime in their own back yard, often getting the satisfaction of being able to see the direct benefit of their efforts.” Further information is available at communitypatrols.org.nz, and interested people can email coordinator Sue Curtis at suec@dcdb. nz.

p All are welcome to attend the Omamari Sheep Dog trials for a social day out

The Farmlands Real Estate Northland Centre Championships have drawn record entries of 146 dogs with competitors coming from around Northland, Waikato and Te Kuiti. There are four events — two for heading dogs and two for huntaways — and there will be plenty for visitors to see and hear. On the final day, the top five Northland-based competitors in each event will qualify their dog to enter a nationwide championship event known to be the pinnacle of hill dog trialling. This year the competition is particularly crucial as Northland is also

hosting the New Zealand and North Island Championships at Ohaeawai — this is a five to six-day event starting on May 27 with potentially more than 500 dogs expected to attend. The Omamari club is grateful to Jim and Dawn Miller for the use of their property as well as their sponsors for helping run the event. All are welcome to attend the trials at 541 Omamari Road for a social day out with food and refreshments available, but the club requires that any pet dogs are left at home. NOTE TO DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS: Between October and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement, this introduces fresh aggregate into the failure in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers, and to prevent damage to the repairs. We understand that there is a degree of inconvenience caused by these works, however this inconvenience is significantly extended if we are required to return to any sites that require repairing. Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information.

New traffic flow for Matakohe Pet photo winner u by Paul Campbell

A major change to the road layout at the realignment of SH12 and the construction of two new bridges at Matakohe has taken effect with the next stage of diversions, which will see vehicles on a new stretch of highway for the first time.

7

Jennifer Randall is the winner of the Dargaville Vet Centre photo competition, submitting a photograph of her pet cat. Her photo will feature on one of the two-metre tall front windows of the centre.

p The new Matakohe diversion in effect from February 19

A spokesman for New Zealand Transport Agency says that from February 19, all eastbound traffic will travel for a distance of 1.2km along the new highway from the most western point of the new alignment to approximately 100m north of Anderson Bridge. All westbound traffic will continue to travel along Matakohe East Road from just south of Anderson Bridge, through Matakohe past Matakohe School and back onto SH12. Traffic travelling from Matakohe eastbound will continue to use Matakohe East Road joining other eastbound traffic just north of Anderson Bridge. Westbound vehicles will continue to pass Matakohe School, and the team ask that drivers take extra care and note a 50km/h speed limit will be in place.

From the week commencing March 4, it’s planned to move all vehicles on to 1.8km of the new road between just west of the new intersection connecting the state highway and Matakohe and approximately 200m north of Hardies Bridge. Vehicle access will be maintained in both directions between Ararua Road. The new alignment at this location is for the local community only. The second phase planned for the first week of March is weather dependent. There will be no vehicle or pedestrian access available between the new alignment and the existing SH12 south of Anderson Bridge when the second phase is in place, and access to Matakohe township will be from the western end of the new alignment. These changes are permanent. ¢

p The Dargaville Intermediate School dance crew were recipients of a $250 prize, donated by Jennifer Randall who won the centre’s recent photo competition. The prize was presented by veterinarian Joyce Gallaghan

The vet centre needed a replacement photo and decided to involve the community in the fun of competition. More than 150 entries were received and voted on, then narrowed down to a few favourites by the judges. “The cat image worked particularly well as we already have images of cattle, sheep and a dog on the window. We had some really fantastic photos, it was a great response,” said vet

centre spokesperson, Nicki Lowe. “We decided that as well as the winner having their picture supersized, we would also donate $250 to a club, school or non-profit organisation of the winner’s choice.” Jennifer chose the Dargaville Intermediate School dance crew to receive the $250 prize. Dance teacher, George Pickering was thrilled for the crew to be selected, saying: “I’m absolutely stoked.” ¢

Cancer support groups Generosity helps progress u by Jill Dickie

u by Jill Dickie

Kaipara people affected by cancer in some way are invited to participate in regular monthly get-togethers for informal support and to share their experiences with each other. The meetings are supported by cancer support nurse specialist, Maggie Prentice, who will travel from Whangarei to Mangawhai Heads and Maungaturoto alongside her colleague, May Pivac, based in Dargaville. Office and volunteer coordinator at the Cancer Society Whangarei branch, Annette Davies, said that living in rural areas can be very isolating so this provides an opportunity for people to share their experiences if they choose. “Some people want to share their story, and some don’t, but everyone enjoys the company and p a cuppa.” The Mangawhai group will meet at the St John Ambulance building, 194 Molesworth Drive, every third Tuesday of the month, from 10am until 11am. The Maungaturoto group will meet at the Footprints room behind Holy Trinity Church, 134 Hurndall Street East, every fourth Tuesday of the month, from 10am until 11am.

Cancer support nurse specialist, Maggie Prentice, will begin monthly get-togethers in Maungaturoto and Mangawhai

The Redhill Cemetery committee members recently held an official opening ceremony at the cemetery entrance gates to celebrate the completion of the new concrete area. The committee and their helpers have made massive progress in their renovation project at the Redhill cemetery since beginning in 2015. “It is amazing the number of people that have volunteered hours of labour, and many have donated resources and money towards costs. It has been wonderful to see,” said committee member Des Subritzky. The most recently completed project is a concrete entranceway donated by Te Kopuru farmers Les and Noelene Andrew. To smooth the division between the road and the concrete, Douglas Logging provided a load of metal and committee member Leith McKenzie levelled it. While driving to meet friends recently Dargaville resident, Melissa Birt noticed a horse standing alone on a ridgeline, fully tacked up and dogs standing nearby. The actions she took resulted in a fallen rider being hospitalised and his family showering her in appreciation.

Next week I will have the good fortune to be at the Northland Field Days in Dargaville. I say good fortune because the field days are an attraction for me on so many levels. In my view, there is no better stage on which to showcase the value and importance of agriculture and horticulture to our country and communities. There is also no better stage to show our expertise in farming, machinery and technology and best practices. The field days are also a great occasion for town and country, young and old, to come together — to be entertained, to be fed (important that) and to have a great time. Here I want to pay tribute to those who make it happen. There are the organisers of course, and the exhibitors and the sponsors — no field days are possible without them. What they bring into Kaipara and Dargaville, in particular, is a massive injection into the economy. I reckon we all owe them our thanks and recognition for that.

Melissa determinedly followed her intuition and enquired with neighbours in the area, but receiving no positive response; she hopped the fence to investigate and discovered the gentleman rider badly injured. While she had trespassing concerns, Melissa felt something wasn’t quite right. “What if I heard someone had died — that’s what made me turn around and go back.” Emergency services took care of the rider, his horse and his dogs. The family of the injured man visited Melissa at her workplace surprising her with flowers, gifts and a card of thanks. “We are just so thankful someone took p Melissa Birt couldn’t drive by after seeing a horse and the time to investigate as he dogs standing alone on a ridgeline had been out for four to five hours in the hot sun,” said the farmer’s moment watching my colleague have ra FREeEawhanau rth o daughter, Mary-Ann. visit from genuinely grateful H e l with ad Treacknowledge rade rher Work colleague Alesha Lewis said members wanting to g y p u lor Spa k rensured e Melissa is a very humble person, she actions, which mostco definitely n e ag Fire is the quiet achiever and a wonderful their dad and poppaWgotWthe oodmedical neighbour. “It was just a really feel good attention he most crucially required.” ¢

Moreover, there is another group, without whom I can guarantee there would be no field days. They are the volunteers — scores of them over the three days. They are on the gates, helping with the parking, generally tidying up, maybe doing a bit of judging — and they are doing it all willingly and without pay. Good on ya, volunteers—what would the field days (or we) do without you? Yes, I‘ll be at the field days, I am looking forward to it. If you are going, too, come up and have a chat. I have no official duties — just an excellent opportunity to get out there and meet as many of you as possible. See you there. Petition to fight Dome dump plan by Paul Campbell

A petition in opposition to plans to open a major new rubbish dump for Auckland in the Dome Valley is gathering signatures and has 40 days to run online. Dome Valley and Wellsford and Warkworth residents fear the proposed landfill poses a threat to the Kaipara Harbour, as it imposes on the Hoteo River catchment, and they have formed an incorporated society, Fight the Tip: Tiake te Whenua. The company, Waste Management has been given overseas investment office approval to buy the property for landfill, with a consent decision due from the Auckland City Council. A prime concern is the perceived threat to the Kaipara Harbour, with its vast snapper breeding ground and fish stocks from hazardous waste from the landfill carried into the harbour by the Hoteo River, which runs through the middle of the proposed site. The petition asks ‘That the House of Representatives urge the government to ban landfills near waterways and continues: ‘We believe that water is the most precious resource our country has and that landfills pose a significant threat to our water quality. Would you drink water from an aquifer under a landfill? We believe there are alternative locations and technologies.

‘Waste buried in landfills can include plastics and potentially hazardous and toxic materials, which could devastate waterways, rivers and harbours, the animals that inhabit them, and the people that rely on them. Protect our water from landfills.’ The area between Warkworth and Wellsford is mostly countryside, with a few homes and some native bush reserves. Waste Management managing director Tom Nickels has said more landfills were needed for Auckland’s growing population. The Dome Valley site fitted the bill because it was close to a state highway, not densely populated and had the right geographical features, he said. The landfill would bring up to 80 jobs, provide work for local businesses and were safe. “They fully line with a five or six layer engineered lining that means nothing leaches into the substrate.” The Fight the Tip petition is at par liament.nz/en/pb/petitions/ document/PET_83735/petitionof-michelle-carmichael-for-fight-thetip-tiaki.  ¢

Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap!

by Ann van Engelen

It is that time of year again when the Northland Field Days committee is in full swing getting the grounds into pristine condition for the biggest three-day outdoor event in Northland. There are many changes from last year’s event starting with lots of new foodies throughout the three different food courts to tempt everybody’s taste buds. There will be great coffee available, and we are excited about the huge variety of food this year, which includes along with the staple hot dogs, hot chips and cold drinks — Mexican food, Fijian curries, slow roasted pulled pork, gourmet schnitzel, sandwiches, hangi, raw fish and Mediterranean wraps. Check out our site map to see where the different food areas are. The Clydesdale horses are back, complete with the wagon and this is a very popular way to give your feet a rest whilst travelling around the field days circuit. The sheep dog trials have moved to a more central spot so visitors can be close to the action — across the road from the Stronghold Cutting Horses, which is always incredible to watch and a crowd favourite. The children’s entertainment area has the blow up bouncy castles and other rides along with a very active market area where you can find bargains and quality market goods, whilst the Lifestyle Pavilions are under cover and a great place to get out of the weather and see

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

Come and see us at one of our shows for a free treatment (Check out the red bar for details)

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

PLAN FOR YOUR FIELD DAYS BUSINESS PROFILE

New move successful for CLAAS One year on from a shift to new premises at 239–241 Port Road, Whangarei, it is clear the move has paid huge dividends for the local CLAAS Harvest Centre. Branch manager, John Haile, says the move has provided much-needed room for the dealership’s growing product range and service team. “We now have 12 staff, including eight service technicians and apprentices. We were struggling to fit everyone and everything in at the old premises, so it is great for us — and our customers.” John attributes the dealership’s growth to their focus on service — and now they have more space to service more machines, for more customers. “Farm machinery is a competitive business and service is the difference. We are committed to providing genuine 24/7 service in season, and we have a technician on roster every weekend. “If you break down on Saturday or Sunday, we will answer the phone and solve the problem on Saturday or Sunday, not the following Monday. We service from Cape Reinga to Albany. “One technician is based at Kerikeri, and our goal is to put another in the south so we can further reduce travel times and provide better service. If we don’t go the extra mile, then someone else will.” Originally from the UK, John moved to New Zealand 13 years ago and has lengthy experience in the farm machinery,

earthmoving and contracting sectors. His team includes sales manager, Shane Powley, who has worked at Northland for 10 years in a range of sales, operational and management roles, and sales representative, Chris Duncan. Service manager, Sam Clarke, heads a team of four service technicians, Bran Horsford, Joel Marsh, Isuru Pinto and Jason Rudolph and apprentice, Josh Gregory. Parts manager, Steve Hansen and workshop foreman Perry Tonks, complete the team. The dealership is the regional sales and support centre for the complete line of CLAAS fodder harvesting technology and tractors; AMAZONE spreading, spraying, cultivation and drilling equipment; JCB telehandlers and wheeled loaders; and Trioliet mixer wagons.

“We have everything you need to plant, grow, harvest and handle quality pasture and silage with maximum efficiency. Each one of our brands is recognised as a leader in its field. Combined with our reputation for service and support, you can be confident that you are getting the very best solution for your requirements.” Visit the CLAAS Harvest Centre team at the Northland Field Days on sites 27/29 and 82/84. With ever increasing energy prices, it is well worth investing in an energy efficient and economical system as an alternative to electric or gas.

Focussed on Field Days u by Andy Bryenton

Ford has some big names in their catalogue, which evoke memories of great vehicles past. The firm which gave us such automotive archetypes as the Falcon, the Transit van and the Cobra is keen to establish new dynasties as well. That’s why the advent of the latest — 21st anniversary — Ford Focus is a coming of age, front and centre for field days. When the original Focus was released, the world took notice, and doubly so when Colin McRae piloted a specially tuned rally version to victory. An RS model packing a two-litre engine set the stage for more performance Focus models to come. Now the 2019 Focus is in Dargaville Ford’s showroom, and it’s a chance to look back at how far not just this one medium sized car has come. Under the hood, Ford has pushed EcoBoost engine design even further than with their multi-award-winning single litre unit. Now rounded out to 1.5 litres, this economical power plant delivers a crisp response, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The new Focus is built in Germany, and packed with features perfect for Kiwi roads. These include adaptive cruise control, a pedestrian and cyclist sensing emergency braking safety system, and even the ability to shut down a cylinder of the engine under low torque demand such as highway cruising, for even greater economy. It’s a birthday for the Focus, but fans of the Ford Ranger will be getting all the presents with Dargaville Ford this field

p Motorsport victories pushed the image of the Ford Focus into the global spotlight, ensuring it became a household name

days. The popularity of Ford’s super-ute remains evergreen, and the range on display — from the fiery performance of the new Raptor to unique cool of the West Coast edition Wildtrak — spans all walks of life, from rugged farming applications to adventure cruising, holidays and of course, serious work. Each year the Ranger legend grows at field days time — 2019 should be no exception. To add to the Ford selection gracing this year’s field days, you’ll

also find a range of tools and garage accessories bearing the famous blue oval brand. Ford is understandably experts when it comes to auto tools — for well over a century, Ford mechanics and technicians have been building, repairing and maintaining a fleet across every continent. For those who have a treasured Ford in the garage, a set of tools designed and branded to match perfectly could be the icing on the cake. ¢

Headed for adventure u by Andy Bryenton

It’s nearly a year on from the groundbreaking ceremony at CFMoto’s huge new futuristic motorcycle factory in China, where a joint venture with KTM has become a reality. With the combination of the manufacturing might of one of the fastest growing brands on two wheels, and the expertise of the KTM team; there’s been all kinds of speculation as to what will roll out those factory doors. CFMoto is not set on waiting around — their programme of development for road bikes seems to be as aggressive as their development of off-road machines for the farm and trail. After taking their big 650 NK to the Isle of Man to compete in one of the most iconic races in the world — the Tourist Trophy — they’ve rethought the entire bike in a new direction. Adventure riding. It is a huge sector of the modern market, made popular by television shows and travelogues of riders pushing far into the wilderness and enjoying views and experiences denied to those on four wheels. The adventure bike is for latter-day explorers, and CFMoto’s 650MT ABS — the last set of letters are for antilock brakes — is no exception. The machine obtains the 650NK’s powerful parallel twin with its Bosch sourced fuel injection, delivering 41 kilowatts in a broad and usable power band. With eight valves and two cylinders, it’s quite an advanced unit. This kind of bike is all about the power to push through rough terrain and sub-

standard roads with confidence, and confidence is definitely inspired by the power on tap, combined with big antilock disc brakes and a suspension system, which irons out the bumps. Stylistically, CFMoto has gone for a rugged and practical look, with plenty of cunning use of luggage space. for that all-important mobile phonebased GPS — they have clearly been talking to adventure riders about what they need in a travel companion. Considering the sheer amount of kilometres of gravel roads in New Zealand, leading to some of our most picturesque spots, you don’t have to have a hankering for the Himalayas or the Sahara to rationalise putting this model in your garage. ¢

Full house for Field Days u by Andy Bryenton

Those who collected trading card or comic books as kids will know there’s nothing like completing the full set. It’s a feeling of pride and achievement — and that’s merely when it’s a handful of cardboard or paper. Imagine the satisfaction felt by Polaris’s engineers as they look at their own completed collection — a full house of off-road vehicles, which has been built up during the years and is being deployed for field days. Topping the list is the off-road, fourwheel drive Ranger, a big name for Polaris and part of an expanded family of variants covering everything from farming to hunting to search and rescue.

Rangers come with petrol or diesel power — there’s even an electric model. Their massive amount of accessories means they can be customised for just about any task. The big UTV side-by-side

has been hitting the trails for 20 years, and the feedback from farmers and back-blocks explorers shows, especially with the launch of the new Ranger 150 — answering the call for a side by side for kids! It’s lined up next to an innovation which is all Polaris’s own — the Ace, an enclosed-roll cage mini off-roader, with the footprint of a quad and the confidence-inspiring intuitive layout of a roadgoing car. Nimble and quick, the Ace neatly combines safety with a big helping of fun — and practicality as well, especially for those riders who find the stance of a quad bike challenging for long days in the field. Of course, there’s also a massive range of variants for the Sportsman series of quads — solid, dependable machines for the farm or powerful and quick recreational vehicles which continue to be improved model year by

model year. 2019’s crop is no exception, with engines ranging from 450cc to the full litre. Adding to the 2019 lineup is the sportsman 570HD — a mid-sized machine designed to hit the sweet spot between power, torque and fuel economy. For the adventurous, Polaris roll out the big guns — the race-winning, high flying, pulse-pounding RZR. This turbocharged two or four seat all terrain dominator sees the Polaris development team unleashed to make their fastest, most thrilling off-roader ever. And now solo pilots can take to the dirt with the new RS1 RZR, an agile and light oneseat racer with pedigree and power. This whole massive range will be on the ground for field days, rounding out a stable of powerful off-road machines, which have won a good reputation among riders, both for work and play. Classics roll into Dargaville

ROAD SAFETY

u by Andy Bryenton

It’s time to polish up the chrome, fire up the engines and get outdoors to appreciate some automotive classics in the summer sunshine. Dargaville’s third annual classic car and bike show is just around the corner, and the hosts at Greg Smith Engineering are anticipating a great day out for all those who attend. In its third year, the show has expanded to take on a whole collection of custom culture aspects, from the hotrods and Harleys, which roll in from miles around, through to classics and rare examples of auto artwork on wheels. It’s a free show for all, adults and kids alike, so there’s bound to be a brilliant turnout. Dargaville and the West Kaipara have a wealth of sheds, barns and garages where there are classics tucked away, and March 9 is their day to shine. The big yard in Day Street — just off Beach Road — in Dargaville will once again be filled with all makes and models of cars and bikes from around the world. With an emphasis on ‘all makes and models’, this is a show for everyone. Without restrictions, the hosts invite everybody to polish up their pride and joy and roll out to a day complete with a sizzling barbecue provided by the generous folks at the Dargaville Rod and Custom Club, a display of hand-crafted airbrush artwork created live by artist Julia Tapp, and much more. There’s even a very modern expression of the lust for speed and

power — the championship drift car of local motorsport hero Gaz Whiter, on display all day. Later on, Greg and his team will unearth a complimentary hangi for all those patrons who have enjoyed a summer’s day of great cars, great bikes and, of course, the usual lively discussions about which classic machines are the best of all time. It’s all happening at the Greg Smith

Engineering workshop and yard, Day Street, Dargaville, from 11am on Saturday, March 9. Those who wish to bring along their vintage, classic, custom, modified, rare or just plain awesome car or motorcycle need not RSVP — there’s room for everyone, and everyone is warmly welcomed to come and join in this Dargaville tradition. ¢

The power of three u by Andy Bryenton

Kawasaki is no stranger to beating the competition with more power. On the road, their sports bikes are second to none when it comes to laying down horsepower in a game of superlative numbers. Winning hearts and minds in the rural backcountry take a different skill set. That’s why the key number for the new Kawasaki Mule Pro FXR isn’t in the hundreds or thousands — it’s the number three. It all begins with a three-cylinder 812cc liquid cooled engine. More cylinders mean smooth power delivery, and Kawasaki are the masters of the triple layout — bike fans will remember the 500cc Kawasaki Triple two-stroke from 1968, and the walloping power to weight ratio of that machine. While this is a four-stroke engine, and fuel injected, the advantages are similar, and the legacy carries across to this new platform and new purpose, mated to a CVT box with both high and low ratios and reverse. Rather than speed, the Mule is all about torque and the power to perform in rough terrain. It can tow more than 900kgs and pack 450 into its own generously sized flatbed. Carrying capacity reveals another incidence of the magic number three. The Mule Pro FXR can seat not two but three occupants in comfort, carrying an entire work crew where they need to go. An extra pair of hands is nice, but many, as they say, make light work. Think about what could be accomplished with three experienced workers and all

Mule Pro FXR can turn within just a hair more than four metres. That’s tight, and it makes it easier to access hard to reach places — not only in the field but in the barn or the yard as well.
