In a first for New Zealand education, Otamatea High School has established an Aviation Academy, to teach students aircraft construction as well as life skills.

The project is the brainchild of retired teacher, Paul Morrison, a hobby pilot who holds an aircraft engineering licence and an inspection authority to survey microlight aircraft. A building has been purpose built for the academy in the OHS grounds and the undertaking has received huge support.

“There has been a huge amount of goodwill from individuals and businesses,” Paul said. “I am rapt with the support from local contractors and suppliers. To date we have raised roughly $45,000 worth of parts, equipment and tooling and the school is covering the balance. “We’ve hardly had to purchase any new equipment as I have most of the components myself.”

Paul Morrison and former OHS students with the Piper Cub they built between 2002 and 2004

The academy will be attended by Aviation Course students who undertake a three-year programme, during which they will build a replica Piper Cub aircraft and complete Level 1 and Level 2 Unit Standards in workshop safety and aircraft construction under the Industry Training Organisation.

repaying the school money back into the nest egg. I’ve made the commitment in the name of the academy to raise the funds and I will do this.” “I was head of department for 18 years at OHS and my philosophy in teaching is to make sure that the student’s curriculum, within a technology programme, provides a full skill base, as well as exam and theory requirements.

The course will also teach them life skills,” said Paul. “The academy is now seeking further sponsorship to start

“The Aviation Academy sets students up, so that when they come out of the programme they will be at the front of any employment queue. We can quote numerous cases of students who have applied for a job that wasn’t even vacant and been successful. “It doesn’t matter what type of work the students go into. They have been involved in a programme that creates integrity, a willingness to work as a team,

leadership and everything a person needs to be a good citizen and a very, very good employee.”

When he retired from OHS in 2006, Paul and his then students were four years into building a replica aircraft. He intended to complete it at home but students kept coming along to help. The aircraft was on show as part of the official launch of the new academy.

Kaipara’s waka ama medal

Going for gold

Parihaki Pirates power towards the finish line at Lake Karapiro

Kaipara waka ama paddlers have come away from the New Zealand Post Waka Ama Sprint Championships at Lake Karapiro with a bronze medal. Some 2,500 paddlers gathered over four days of racing at the lake with an estimated 10,000 spectators throughout the event. “The Kaipara team won bronze in the Senior Masters W12 event. They teamed with Nga Hoe Horo from the Hokianga and competed under the name Te Hiku O Te Ika,” said local Pahi paddler, Maureen Evans. “The Kaipara team otherwise paddled under the name Kaipara Ringaweras and they progressed to the finals of both the Senior Master Men 500m and 1000m events, and they finished 6th overall in both of these. Maureen and her husband Errol competed in Masters’ age group events in teams called Parihaka Pirates and Parihaka Jandal Sistaz, crewed by Kaipara and Whangarei paddlers. “Both of our teams qualified to the semifinals in the 500m sprint and 1000m turns race,” she said.

Kumite kick: Shane training at Miyagi Kan Karate Club’s Whangarei Dojo, under Shihan 8th Dan George Barounis of NSW Australia

Twenty-year-old architectural student Shane Tregidga is the perfect example of how a discipline such as karate can lead to greater success and determination in all areas of life. The karate champion is also an exceptional student who is gearing up to face several challenges in 2012 — and beyond. Training under Sensei Craig Nordstrand for 10 years, Shane has achieved great success on numerous occasions. In 2011, Shane picked up a gold medal at the North Island Champs in Hamilton and two at the Commonwealth Karate Champs in Sydney Australia. Shane was also placed third at the North Island Champs, the NZ Nationals, Sydney International and at a tournament in Christchurch. In 2010, Shane won gold at the Miyagi Kan Karate Club yearly tournament. A humble Shane said, “I know that without the guidance of my very committed teacher, none of this would have been possible.” Sensei Craig Nordstrand said with conviction, “Shane has the potential to be a world champion one day.”

This year, Shane has his sights set on the Oceania Karate Championships and beyond that, the World Karate Championships in 2014. In addition, Shane will return to Auckland this year to complete his final year of Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree at Unitec. To this end, Shane’s academic ability is also commendable. During year one at Unitec he was awarded first in class for studio studies and last year, he picked up first in class for Visual Communications. Shane was also Dargaville High Sports Dux on two occasions. Shane trains with the Miyagi Kan Karate Club, which Sensei Craig Nordstrand founded in 1996. He operates out of the Scout Hall on Onslow Street, Dargaville and also has centres in Whangarei, Kawakawa and Glenfield, where Shane trains while studying in Auckland. Shane believes his karate practice has been a positive, influencing factor in his life and encourages anyone who is thinking about taking it up, to just give it a go. Training in Dargaville is on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5pm and people are welcome to call in. Term 1 2012 starts on February 8.

The great Food Bill debate by Paul Campbell

3

The New Zealand Food Bill has polarised people over the holiday period, with a petition circulating nationally to have it re-examined before parliament sits again next month

As a major food producing region, debate in Kaipara has been robust, and the manager of Kaiwaka Organics, Romi Curl, says if people are confused about the Bill, “Minister for Food Safety, Kate Wilkinson, doesn’t seem to be intimate with its wording. “In several interviews and articles she has said that aspects of the bill like seed-saving or exchanging, produce trading amongst neighbours, Farmers Market growers and Woofers (workers for board and lodging on organic farms) have been ‘accidentally captured’ by the bill,” Ms Curl says. “One of the reasons the Bill is so confusing is that it is a completely new set of standards being imposed upon us . . . and we need to comply if we want to be part of the World Trade Organisation and enter a Free Trade agreement with the USA.” Ms Wilkinson says in turn that New Zealand food manufacturers and sellers operate under regulations that are 30 years old, that these regulations need updating to ensure that the food people buy is safe and that those selling food take responsibility. “It’s a fact that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of food poisoning in the developed world,” she added. The 'anonymous' internet campaign had spread misinformation that the Bill would ‘make growing your own veges a privilege, not a right, and that food safety officers with guns would soon be storming into private homes’.

by Joanne Speechly

She said the Bill had has gone through extensive public consultation over the past four years and been passed by a select committee with cross-party support. “No one will come under the scope of the Food Bill unless they are selling or trading food for commercial purposes. Food grown at home for personal or family consumption, or given or exchanged for other food with friends is not within the scope of the Bill.” The Bill would require those involved in the commercial trade of food to operate under one of three regulatory systems, depending on the level of food safety risk involved. “Those in the lowest risk category — including small traders running roadside stalls or selling their own horticultural produce at farmers markets, charity sausage sizzles and bake sales — would simply receive free ‘food handler guidance’ information. They will not need to register anywhere, and will incur no extra costs. The government recognises

that charitable and community events such as sausage sizzles, home bake sales, and other fundraising events are an important part of our Kiwi lifestyle. These will continue to occur as they always have.”

The Kaipara is a unique and beautiful place, encompassing both the east and west coasts and a great deal of diversity in between. A Kaipara timber carrier by Brian Eastwood After more than twenty-seven years criss-crossing the Tasman Sea from Kaipara Harbour to Wollongong, Sydney and Newcastle, you would think that the barque Northern Chief could easily have sailed herself there and back again. A familiar sight on the Kaipara at Pahi, Aoroa, Aratapu or Te Kopuru, her usual track took her with a load of timber to Australia, back with a hold full of coal for Waitemata Harbour’s Chelsea Sugar Works and on to Kaipara in ballast. An average shipment was 250,000 feet of sawn kauri and a back load of 420 tons of coal and other goods. Sometimes part of the cargo such as bone dust and coal went on to Kaipara. Each round trip took an average of six or seven weeks before they were off again. Sometimes the actual voyage home from Newcastle was sailed in as little as eight days. A ship of 287 tons, Northern Chief was built in 1886 at Freeman’s Bay, Auckland, by Richard MacKay, an old sailor and boat builder. Built to

last, she was two years in the making. His son Captain John MacKay was her first skipper and remained as master until his untimely death in 1903 from a knee operation that went wrong. He was aged 46. Out in all conditions and all seasons, the usual troubles suffered by seamen and their ships occasionally came the way of Northern Chief. But in spite of averaging fifteen or sixteen passages through Kaipara Heads each year for more than twenty years, she apparently never tangled with the bar. John Stallworthy recorded her having a slight collision in 1911, but that was just with Aoroa wharf. Once narrowly missed by a water spout that burst 25 feet away, she later had a close encounter with a whale that insisted on using her sides to rub the barnacles off its back but it caused little damage. Among some rough Tasman storms one of her worst voyages took off her deck cabin, destroyed

the navigating equipment and demolished the ship’s rails. The captain and mate had problems getting clear of the wreckage. Captain Johnson, a mariner of long experience, told of a 1912 passage to Sydney that he and the crew reckoned to be the worst storm they had ever gone through. Two seamen were lost overboard on one day in 1913 and nine years previously a ship’s boy, William Kassens, had fallen from the top yards into a dangerous sea. The captain, who was his stepfather, had to make the hard decision not to launch a boat to look for him. In 1913 Northern Chief was scrapped and sold to Devonport Steam Ferry Company for a coal hulk. Surprisingly, five years later shipowners Burns and Nicol refitted her as a schooner and placed her on the San Francisco run. She promptly broke all records on her second trip from New Zealand, sailing to America and home again in 44 days. But by 1934 it was all over and Northern Chief was left lying in the ships’ graveyard on Rangitoto Island, perhaps dreaming of those exciting days rushing in and out of the Kaipara Harbour. She was a fine ship that had served Kaipara well.

Council Briefs from January 25 meeting of the Kaipara District Council In her opening, Councillor Geange reflected on the changes to driving licence testing from the Kaipara region and appealed to council to lobby the New Zealand Transport Agency. She also raised the issue of whether ‘city people’ should be made to drive on metal country roads to improve their overall driving skills — just as Kaipara learners will have to drive in denser traffic, with traffic lights and roundabouts. Representatives from the St John Ambulance Service addressed council in regard to the concept plan for Mangawhai Park Ambulance station site. Riverside Holiday Park representatives also attended the meeting to speak on the request for a right of way on esplanade reserve at Mangawhai. Mangawhai St John Ambulance Service: Concept Plan Mangawhai Park Site Council have approved St John Ambulance Service’s concept design for its proposed station site on Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai Park, with one exclusion. The proposed emergency helicopter landing area in the current plan will be removed but the land will be a cleared grass area. St John’s also needs to clarify the specific survey identifications of the already approved site and both St John will enter into collaborative discussions with Mangawhai Historical Society as to what form of screen planting will take place. The concept design includes removal of exotic plants of poor form in favour of sympathetic native planting. The look of the building will reflect a corporate structure with selected colour schemes to reflect the coastal setting and ensure that the building is unobtrusive.

FEBRUARY 1 - 2012

Riverside Holiday Park: Request for right of way Riverside Holiday Park has for many years used a portion of the esplanade reserve that bounds their property for access to northern areas of the holiday park and have requested that council formalise the right of way. No physical works are required for this however the holiday park has requested that the council provide/ resurrect bollards to define the right of way. Riverside Holiday Park has agreed to cover any associated costs and has maintained the esplanade reserve for some time. Council has rejected the ROW request on the grounds that it will be of no benefit to the community. Dargaville Wharf Pontoon: Deferment of Reinstatement A report on the options and costs of the reinstatement of the Dargaville Wharf Pontoon came back to Council for its consideration. This revealed that the quoted pricing for reinstatement or replacement of the wharf greatly exceeds the initial estimated cost of $5,000. Further investigation has resulted in a quote of $25,650 to $75, 695 and does not include any works or changes to the existing piles to secure the pontoons in place. Additionally, there is no council budget allocated. Council agreed that the Northern Wairoa River is an asset to the community and maintenance needs to be acted upon. The matter will be deferred by council who will actively seek community groups to work with council to find funding by summer 2012/2013. Initially it was thought that the Waka Ama Club might be able to come up with some funding. However, it does not have the funds and has decided that the river is not a safe place to train given the currents.

Council is in agreement that it is unlikely to have the additional funding of an estimated $6 to 8 million in place to complete the schemes in the available timeframe. The resolution is for the item to lie on the table until council’s February meeting pending further information. Service Contract Extension: Environmental Northland Limited An extension of the current contract for the provision of dog, stock and noise control, parking and bylaw management is required as it is unlikely that future delivery options will be arranged before this contract expires on March 31 2012. Council will negotiate with Environmental Northland Limited to deliver services under its existing contract for a maximum period of twelve months or until arrangements for the future provision of these services. Road Naming private right of way off Cames Road, Mangawhai: West Farm Drive The private right of way off Cames Road and opposite Kokopu Lane is locally known as West Farm Drive. The name meets Council’s Road Naming Policy 2009 and has been endorsed by council. Road Naming five private roads and access ways off Pearl Street, Mangawhai: Taranga View Road, Cape Rodney Place, Fern Bird Place, Matata Way and Pakiri Way. Five private roads in Mangawhai have had the above names endorsed.

Dargaville Skate Park revival by Joanne Speechly Dargaville skateboarders want a skate park and the reality is, it could be a positive for the community having a dedicated space for the growing sport. A skate park development was formed several years ago but in the last six months or so, much of the progress has been on paper and the project has fallen out of the limelight. Currently, the Dargaville Skate Park is a small area of concrete located on Logan Street, and committee fundraising means there is money in the coffers but more is needed. The project has the It’s written on the wall — Dargaville wants a skate backing of Te Runanga Ngati Whatua park! Growing rural industries gaining new Dargaville hub With the agricultural and forestry sectors leading New Zealand’s economic recovery from the international financial crisis large numbers of jobs and millions of dollars in export earning rely on the machinery which keeps these industries going. Every hour off the farm or out of the forest costs money, and it’s not just tractors, harvesters, skidders and logging machinery which form the backbone of our rural infrastructure. A small army of truck drivers ply the highways each day to help turn raw materials into business success. Since the early 1990s the key players in the Kaipara’s primary industries have come to respect the hard work of Dargaville’s Gas and Tyre Services, specialists in heavy transport and heavy machinery tyres and lubricants. Gas and Tyre maintain three on-site fleet trucks to keep all that heavy gear in action, but key to their operations is their service centre in Dargaville, which is undergoing an expansion to meet market demand. It’s an indication that forestry, agriculture and transport are growth sectors — and one which confirms Dargaville’s status as a primary industry hub, catering to the successful dairy sector as well as logging, beef and crop cultivation (including our famous kumara fields). The new extension at Gas and Tyre is being constructed by the

Dargaville firm of King Brothers Construction. King Brothers have selected local specialists such as Awakino Contractors, Vuletich Construction, Newman Engineering, Firth Concrete, and the Plumbing and Heating Centre to assist them, making this a real local initiative and proving once again that the skill base in Dargaville is up to any project — there’s no need to go out of town. The team at Gas and Tyre services would like to thank all the workers who have made this project come to fruition, as well as their loyal customers to whom they guarantee many more years of excellent service from their new and expanded premises.

Taste of the Kaipara An idea has been brewing among members of the Kaipara Business Forum — and it sounds very delicious. Ahead of March’s Kaipara Kai Festival, expressions of interest are being sought regarding a Kaipara stand at Taste of New Zealand. Taste of New Zealand is the country’s ultimate food and beverage festival, attracting thousands of people from here and overseas. Don and Teresa Windley — Keen to The business forum’s represent Kaipara at Taste of New Zealand informal proposal is very much in the initial stages and largely depends on interest from local producers who are keen to attend and meet the selectors requirements. “If we get a good response, the numbers work and get we can get a syndicate together, then I’ll put it to council,” said economic development facilitator,” Chris Donahoe. Mangawhai’s Echo Valley Olives has held a stall at Taste of NZ but co-owner Don Windley said he would be keen to be part of a Kaipara contingent. Last year, Ruawai’s Purple Monkey Finger vodka represented Kaipara at the Auckland Food Show. Taste of New Zealand will be held at Auckland’s Victoria Park from November 15 to 18. To register interest, businesses are asked to send product information to Chris at KDC before February 7.

Lets Go Fishing

Southern hemisphere’s biggest fishing comp kicks off in Bream Bay Fishing is in the blood for a huge number of Kiwi anglers, and nothing gets the blood pumping like the thrill of the southern hemisphere’s biggest fishing contest. It’s a festival of sun, sea, scenery and skill as thousands of fishos gather together in the beautiful surrounds of Bream Bay to go head to head across a range of challenges. This year the major sponsors Century Batteries bring the Beach and Boat to a new level, with a whopping $220,000 prize pool up for grabs and all kinds of special events livening up the two-day celebration of Kiwi angling culture on February 24 and 25. It’s no surprise that folks from all over the country and indeed from around the world will be there for the fun. Along with the challenge of landing the biggest fish, there’ll be hot competition for the Furuno World Cup — the most coveted snapper trophy on earth with a big prize and maximum kudos attached. We’re also going to be treated to all the action in the Ocean Kayaks Kayak Fishing

DARGAVILLE KAYAKS

World Cup — a showcase for the best of the best in this popular new form of fishing that’s taking the world by storm. International superstar Jim Sammons will be there to contest the crown, and local Kaipara kayak fisherman Jason Dassler will be there to represent our district with the ‘home team advantage’. There’s plenty for the kids as well, with up and coming anglers able to grab some neat prize packs, and just being in the contest puts you in the draw for all kinds of goodies, such as a Ramco boat and trailer package complete with a 70hp Yamaha outboard! Entertainment on Saturday night features top NZ band Jump Start. With simply too many prizes to list here, this is THE fishing event of the yearly calendar — equivalent to Bathurst for the V8 fans, but with far more fish! Get registered now and sort out your bait and tackle — the Century Batteries Beach and Boat is simply unmissable. Go to www.beachandboat.co.nz to get amongst the action.

The Northern Wairoa A and P Show is a popular occasion on the events calendar and this year the committee are offering up another splendid day. Full of family fun and close competition, the day is fast approaching on Saturday February 11 at Arapohue Showgrounds on Mititai Road, Dargaville. The agricultural and pastoral show launched in 1892 and has become something of an institution for the small Arapohue community and surrounding districts. Despite several national and international crises over the past 120 years, such as the World Wars, economic depression and polio epidemic, the Northern Wairoa A & P Show has only been cancelled five times. By late 1891, much of the Arapohue population had been settled for 10 to 15 years and schools, churches, halls, clubs, farms and stores had been established. The great Northern Wairoa River was undoubtedly the district’s principal line of transport, the roading network was steadily improving, stock numbers were increasing and farming was becoming more viable as an income source for families. In the midst of change, ideas were brewing that a club should be set up and farmers could hold meetings where they could exchange ideas and consult with the invited qualified speakers. The formative meeting was attended by many ‘old’ names of the area — Harding, Dreadon, Bradley and Webb to name a few — and the Northern Wairoa Agricultural and Pastoral Association was formed. From its initiation, the show has reflected the sign of the times but

You’ll discover freshly made sandwiches to go alongside a hot breakfast and lunch menu and the best in takeaway treats. Speaking of takeaway dinners, there’s nothing better to satisfy the family than a piping hot fresh pizza from Real Town Pizzas — Maungaturoto’s destination for the ubiquitous Italian favourite. With lashings of cheese and generous toppings, there’s something to please all tastes at a great price. We’ve saved the best for last this week and what a treat it is — that famous local venue for good times and live music — the Funky Fish have really pulled out all the stops with their latest Sunday concert, bringing us a Kiwi supergroup made up of three individually famous artists. The latest musical project featuring the talents of musicians Paul McLaney, Andrew Park and Malcolm Blake may be called Nameless Sons, but all three of these talented artists have been forging a name for themselves in the international music scene for several years now. With members of the new Kiwi rock band having added their distinctive sound to such notable acts as Gramsci, SJD, Dream City Film Club, Looma and the mighty Concord Dawn, there is a real buzz around what they will accomplish together. Drop in and see them and stay a while for something special from the Funky Fish’s awesome summer menu.
