Field days future in doubt u by Paul Campbell
The Northland Field Days event has been cancelled for the second year running by the ongoing pandemic and the latest Omicron alert, in a major economic blow to Dargaville, Kaipara and wider Northland.

The cancellation has also cast financial doubt on the event’s survival into the future. With government help lacking, the field days committee is now appealing for support from the event’s rural roots, at a time when bank support is negative, suggesting cattle donations as a fundraiser. “Due to Omicron, the field days have been cancelled for the second year in a row,” said committee president John Phillips. “In 2021, we were three days out from the event when the government changed the alert levels, and we had to cancel. “All the marquees were up, trucks had brought in a lot of machinery and stock from as far south as Palmerston North, exhibitor sites were well developed, traffic control all arranged, rubbish collection organised — we were so ready to go! “Between the Northland Field Days, all the exhibitors, the suppliers and vendors, hundreds of thousands of dollars were lost — it was quite devastating for all concerned. We applied to the government for some sort of financial assistance, but we were turned down. “Some site holders kindly donated their site fee, while others chose to have their site fee carried forward to 2022. This money added to the income from our two lease agreements enabled us to pay our rates, insurance, interest on our bank loans and pay our event coordinator. “With a very limited budget, we were ready to set up for our 2022 event when
p The last field days event was in 2020
the government struck again with moving the whole of New Zealand into red in the traffic light system. “We have now applied for the Events Transition Payments Scheme assistance, but we are not hopeful that this will be successful. It is understandable that the generosity of our site holders is also starting to wear a bit thin. “The Northland Field Days is a registered non-profit, charitable organisation, and this annual event has a huge financial impact that benefits the Northland region in so many different sectors. “Going forward, the Northland Field Days are now asking farmers for their help. Perhaps you can rear one of your beef calves to a weaner and then donate that calf to the Northland Field Days?” The annual event at Dargaville normally sees the town’s retail and hospitality
industry booming for up to a week and more, along with wider Kaipara, for the largest agricultural gathering in Northland. As an incorporated society registered with the Charities Commission, the cancellation will dry up funding for community grants for scholarships and research to support the rural sector. In 2006, the society bought the land where the field days have been held, and improvements such as sealing Awakino Point East Road had been made possible with show generated revenue. With the latest blow, the society is looking for assistance. “If you are able to help us, please contact our office by phone on 09 439 8998 or by email to info@northlandfielddays.co.nz,” Mr Collins says. ¢

p As the summer months deliver hot and unsettled weather, algal blooms can form in streams and ponds across the Kaipara, prompting calls to council authorities about pollution, odours and discolouration. Cathy Orevich, the Northland Regional Council’s compliance monitoring manager, notes rotting vegetation, stagnant, warm water and natural bacterial life are responsible for most of these events. However, it’s advised that discoloured, slimy or smelly water is not suitable for drinking or swimming, for animals or humans. p Results for NZCEA exams are out now, but there are fewer marks being waited on than in usual years. Due to Covid, Northland students were absent for 43.2 per cent of external exams, compared to 10.7 per cent across the same regions in 2020. In many cases, alternatives to exam-earned credits will bridge the gap for learners. Students were forced to wait two weeks longer than usual to discover their grades this year. New Zealand Qualifications Authority deputy CEO Andrea Grey said while there have been high loads on the NZQA student portal website, there have been no delays for students in accessing their results.

Trail closed for stopbank repair u by Andy Bryenton
Part of Ruawai’s cycle and walking trail has been closed due to maintenance of the town’s stopbank, a process that may take two weeks.
p Ruawai’s stopbank supports the town’s popular cycle trail, which will be closed while maintenance is undertaken to bolster and raise the earthworks
“Although recent rain has been welcomed by landowners, it is causing headaches for Kaipara District Council’s Raupo stopbank improvement project in Ruawai,” says KDC spokesperson Gillian Bruce. Work was set to begin last week but has been delayed, avoiding potential damage from forecasted heavy rain. The project is now getting underway, meaning that the walking and cycling track has been closed between Westlake and Simpson Roads, allowing trucks to access the worksite. This latest part of the Raupo District Drainage Plan will widen the stopbank to five metres and raise the height to 3.8 metres above sea level.
“The improvements are a continuation of work carried out in previous years, which improved the stopbank between the Simpson Road entrance to the Wilson Landing Road entrance. This year, we will complete the last section to improve the resilience of the area by reducing the risk of flooding,” Gillian said. The work will see the kikuyu grass covering the sides of the bank rolled off, then reinstated after the bank is shaped and finished. After the bank is at the required height, the vegetation will be replaced, and a layer of crushed limestone laid along the top, reinstating the walking trail. ¢

Making good neighbours u by Andy Bryenton
Neighbours Day is coming up on the calendar, and the Kumarani Creative Centre’s team is offering their expertise in organising community events to help connect neighbourhoods and towns. “To me, a neighbourhood is not just those people who you are usually in close contact with; it’s also those who may be more isolated. Neighbourhood is a concept, which brings together all generations, cultures and walks of life,” says Kumarani’s Tania Whētu. Neighbours Day Aotearoa has been growing in popularity during the several years it has been celebrated. This year the theme is Kai Connections. This concept acknowledges how sharing a meal or breaking bread with your neighbours is a great way to break down boundaries, and set the groundwork for sharing resources to the benefit of everyone. Tania points to the community spirit fostered by the rise of community pātaka pantries, where excess produce is shared on a ‘give some, take some’ basis.
The concept for this Neighbours Day, which happens in mid-March, is to share a recipe, bake some treats, host a pot-luck dinner in your local hall or arrange a barbecue, hāngī or get-together. It can sometimes seem like a lot of work, but the skills to make these kinds of events happen are right in the Kumarani wheelhouse. They want to help and offer advice on how to run a great small or medium scale neighbourhood event via their website and Facebook page or by calling 09 439 5152. Neighbours Day is not far away, and some help with planning could make all the difference for community groups, sports clubs, churches or charitable groups seeking to reach out to their neighbourhoods at this time. ¢
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Mayor’s Message Two years ago last week the Government started its rollout of the first responses to the Covid-19 coronavirus. We’ve been living in a pandemic since then. Now the news is that Government expects the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus will be surging across our communities in February and March. Government is managing us towards a kind of summer-autumn virus period, knowing that a winter virus peak would be much worse. The modelling predicts by Easter and ANZAC Day we should be over the worst of this next phase. Right now it’s a bit like we’re sitting on the beach in the sun and are about to be smashed by a big wave; it’s hard to know exactly how things will turn out until we’re through it. So it’s best to be prepared. It will pay to have a personal plan for what you and your family will do when the virus is soon among us. For its operations Council has developed business continuity plans to be able to keep services working, especially essential services. Expect to see ongoing clear communications on this, and as situations develop and change then expect Council to be responsive to new priorities and emerging focus areas. We’re thinking fast on our feet and keeping things going. Key projects ahead include: • a finalisation of the Annual Plan for 2022/23 which elected members and staff will continue meeting and working towards over the next few months. We’re alert to NZ’s rapidly increasing inflation and rising costs of projects and staff. Council works really hard
to balance what Kaipara people need their Council to be doing and ensuring rates are affordable. I hear your frustrations about the rising costs of everything that everyone is facing right now, and we hope to improve our Annual Plan from earlier forecasts. • District Plan Review is on track for a draft version of the document to be shared in April/May. Staff, elected members and expert consultants will continue shaping and crafting this new version of the rule-book for a better Kaipara through the coming weeks and months. • Roading projects such as Waipoua River Road where pavement construction is due to start in February. By Easter we should see the completion of the sealing of Pouto Road Phase One, by which time the new autumn season of the $8m PGF unsealed roading network developments will have commenced. Speaking of roads, look out for the Government’s Speed Limit Review of the State Highways in Northland coming soon. Early indications on the proposal are that the fastest speed on more than 800km of highways in Northland will be 80km/ hr. Unreal. Please have your say when submissions open, and go safely. Ngaˉ mihi, Mayor Jake Dr Jason Smith, Mayor of Kaipara District
www.kaipara.govt.nz
The government’s proposed Three Waters mandate will be a financial disaster and will fail to achieve the aims it sets out to achieve. In view of the geographic and demographic differences between regions of the country, for example, the vast gap between Auckland and Kaipara, I am all for local bodies having jurisdiction for decision-making in this space. Having it taken away from them is an attack on democracy. This is certain to become a general election issue. While the aim of supplying clean water to all is commendable, authorities should have adopted technology, which has been around for years, before things reached this impasse. Choice is key. Currently, our local councils do not fluoridate municipal supplies, and no doubt, under a central government approach, this would end. No living thing can survive without water, and no one should claim ownership of this resource. Creating an authority to inspect and monitor rural tanks and supplies is unworkable;
better to increase the water resilience of homes, both rural and urban. If the government is serious about this issue, they could easily make this financially affordable. A tank to divert the first 100 litres of water taken from a roof helps to eliminate pesticides, pollens, animal waste and other toxins. A floating flexible hose inside water tanks ensures no uptake of sediment from the bottom of the tank. Filtration systems, ultraviolet units and other extant, proven technologies are readily available to ensure a clean supply. Not only should the four Northland councils form a united front to oppose Three Waters but members of the public should make submissions and address their MP as well, so we are heard. New loo coming to Pahi Representatives of the Pahi community met with Council at the wharf last week to work out where a new toilet block could go. The toilet block will replace the current old ones using funding allocated in the Council’s LongTerm Plan. Top of the list was for the toilets to be close to the buildings and beach, have good visibility and lighting for safety and be accessible. It also needs a clean water supply. The area will retain the caravan dump station.

Drinking fountains turned off
If you or your family are out and about over summer remember to take a water bottle to drink. As part of our COVID-19 protection framework, drinking fountains have been turned off throughout the district to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
Mangawhai Community Park toilet
Installation of the new toilet facilities at the historic village in the Mangawhai community park is almost complete. We‘ll let you know once the facility is available for use.
The site preferred for the toilet block is at the end of the hall, near to the current block, and in a style that blends in with the hall. It will be some months before work can start. The Council is now investigating engineering options before the proposed site and concept plans can be confirmed. If you have further thoughts you think we should consider, you can contact the Project Manager, Mark Schreurs, mschreurs@kaipara.govt.nz or phone 027 737 2953.

A new series of art classes for young Dargaville students aims to foster self-confidence, creativity and inspiration, says tutor Micaela van den Berg.
The long-established Dargaville law firm Hammonds Law is entering a new era as Dave Dennis welcomes Marcus Quinn and Alistair Hammond into the directorship of the business.
The classes, beginning in tandem with the academic year, are for children ages 6 to 12, covering the primary and intermediate school years. Business awards a chance to reflect u by Andy Bryenton
Flax and Fibre, a creative business from Tangowāhine, is flying the flag for the west Kaipara in this year’s Northland Business Excellence Awards as a finalist in the customer’s choice section. While there are many categories, Flax and Fibre’s Heather Carrigan says that the customer’s choice division is one of the most hotly contested, and most gratifying to become a finalist in. “This one comes from the people. It’s based on customer service and relationships,” says Heather. “It’s one thing to have a great product, but it’s another to be recognized in this

way by your customers. We have had overwhelming feedback from those who have voted. One of the biggest rewards I have in business is talking to and getting to know my customers.” Heather said that due to the nature of her enterprise, many of her customers are in the market for special, one-of-a-kind gifts, making each transaction very personal. However, it’s not just the connections with people that have made this award nomination valuable. “Being one of only six finalists across all of Northland has made me pause and take a deeper look at my business.” A large part of the process required to enter the awards involves honest self-analysis. As this is the first time Flax and Fibre has entered, it was a chance to step back and take stock. “In a creative industry like mine, you are often in a creative space in your mind, not the orthodox and analytical one, which is needed to plan for business. However, I have learned that the more you put down on paper, the more your brain takes hold of the concepts, and that inspires confidence.” Introspection, reflection and forward planning have proven valuable, in terms of analysing past victories and missteps and learning from them all. Now, Heather awaits news of the final winner of the Northland Business Excellence Awards, to be announced on February 18. These awards have been a benchmark for business acumen for 43 years, with a roll call of top local firms making up its hall of fame. It offers local businesses, big and small, an opportunity to measure, recognise, and honour excellence in commerce. ¢

WOMEN IN BUSINESS I LOVE WHAT I DO! Real Estate not only helps support my family, it also gives me great joy to be able to fulfil the needs and wants of others. I love meeting new people and forming lasting relationships, this means listening to all your needs and questions.
Karina grew up in Auckland before living and working in the Waikato and finally settling in Mangawhai Heads. Within the last two years of her 15 year corporate career, she had the desire to run a business of her own, where she could be self-directed, self-motivated and have a better work life balance.
We have seen the market go absolutely crazy over this last year. After a quiet patch over the Christmas holidays where everyone was enjoying their family time, we have returned back to work and it is just as crazy as it was in December last year. More listings are coming on line and prices are holding firm. Plenty of buyer demand still out there and we are achieving some amazing results for our vendors. So with that in mind … If you have been thinking now may be the right time to sell to take advantage of that premium dollar, call me as I am offering to provide a PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY PACKAGE WITH VIDEO ABSOLUTELY FREE OF CHARGE. This is a huge value, and will add value to your home and the price you would like to achieve.
She bought The Gift Loft in June 2020. The Gift Loft, an existing online business of seven years, was a platform that she could expand and improve. She created a new website, built a custom business hub to exist on her property and obtained a liquor licence. With that in place she could include alcohol in selected gift hampers. The business offers a wide range of gifts online and also accepts custom orders for personal and corporate gifts.

We have two businesses that I run. “Imparts” which imports spare parts for heavy machinery started when I was working as a heavy machinery mechanic and my partner and I decided we wanted to start a family. After working as a mechanic for most of my working life (14 years) we wanted a way to stay in the industry while allowing some time off the tools. We also have “Kaipara Bouncy Castles” which hires out kids bouncy castles. When our son turned one we had to drive to Whangarei to hire a bouncy castle for his party. We realised that there was a huge hole in the Kaipara area with a lack of kids entertainment. We do our best to provide delivery where we can, even if its just part of the way. We have been so humbled by the support we have received from the community that within a couple of short months we were able to offer a giveaway and are hoping to offer another one in the next couple of months. I have been doing all of this while being a volunteer at Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade where I have served almost 15 years service and currently hold rank as Station Officer there, the first and only women to do so in this Brigade so far. Part of my volunteer role within FENZ is on the Regional Woman’s Advisory Network which helps connect and support woman within the organisation.

Betty Willetts and Sue Girven make up the Kaipara lifestyler’s advertising team, helping local businesses get their message across to a readership which spans the width of New Zealand, from the east coast to the west. Business owners across the Kaipara will recognize their voices from phone conversations about effective, targeted marketing in the district’s weekly, locally owned and operated newspaper. At a time when statistics show a lack of trust in the integrity of social media and online news, it’s good to be able to trust a ‘home grown’ team to deliver your local community news. At the same time, Betty and Sue are working hard to accompany that vital information with great reasons to shop local and support our local economy.

Petrol cost a burning issue u by Andy Bryenton
Fuel could top $3 a litre as tensions in Eastern Europe, inflation, a mooted speed limit drop on local highways and the demise of Marsden Point all contribute to rising prices. However, it may be a case of excuses masking record profits. Data from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment suggests that a lot of this added cost is being funnelled back to petrol companies in the form of increased margins. In other words, dollars are being reaped from the Kiwi motorist at an alltime high, and Ukraine has nothing to do with it. This theory is categorically rejected by fuel suppliers themselves. The fuel companies point to higher costs per barrel of crude, higher costs in the supply chain, and even higher wage bills for staff as inflationary pressures. However, this does little to relieve the pain at the pump, in a nation poorly served by public transport, especially in Kaipara, where it is all but non-existent. Having to pay high fuel costs to commute when wages remain stagnant, makes it uneconomical for some people to work at all. A situation where citizens are better off unemployed is bad news for the economy. Also found to be non-existent, in an MBIE report presented in 2019, was an active wholesale market in New Zealand. The report opined that this absence was weakening price competition in the retail market. In the intervening years, small independent firms such as Gull and
Waitomo have managed to depress prices geographically. It led to the coining of the phrase ‘the Gull effect’ and widespread theories that small Kiwi towns suffer from price collusion, only broken when a fresh player enters the local game. While there’s no evidence of a shadowy conspiracy, it’s open knowledge that prices are low where competition is fierce. Dargaville is often told that local, higher fuel prices are due to geographic isolation, and one can only wonder about the fact that some of the lowest prices in the nation are in rural Manawatū or Whānganui. Would a Gull or Waitomo pump change this? Alternatively, is inflation and transport a more complex set of issues than the disgruntled fuel buyer cares to understand? What we do know is that the Commerce Commission will gain powers to monitor fuel company profits and potentially even print them in the public domain. It also has the authority to impose $5 million penalties on anti-competitive behaviour. However, to an oil company, this sum is pocket change. The new laws stop short of two big calls from consumers and their advocacy groups to slash GST from fuel for private citizens and true governmental regulation of maximum fuel prices. ¢
p Is competition the key to lower fuel prices, or are New Zealand markets at the whim of international tensions?

Ford’s electric revolution u by Amy Fifita
The new 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV is expected for sale in New Zealand this year, in a bold new move for Ford. Not only is it an SUV, but it is an electric vehicle, showing that the company is moving with current issues and trends. The use of electric vehicles has become more popular with current issues surrounding climate change and the rising cost of fuel. The New Zealand government has a clean car discount for buying a hybrid electric or fully electric vehicle to achieve a carbon neutral country. The first electric Ford was released in 2021 as the 2020 Mach-E, and it’s a long way from its muscle car roots. This year, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E SUV is finally coming to New Zealand shores. The five-seater SUV can be bought in either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The GT performance models can go from zero to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds with a total of 480 horsepower. Although reviews vary by personal opinion, the general consensus is that the Mach-E is fast, with most drivers enjoying the infotainment system. It also has notably more space than a regular Mustang coupe and could easily fit a family. At first, the idea of Mustang producing an electric vehicle that was an SUV created feelings of uncertainty for longtime fans. However, it was an unexpected surprise, that both reviews and sales were in favour of this bold move, which showed that Ford was moving into the popular SUV space and growing interest in electric vehicles. The Ford Mustang has evolved vastly throughout the decades. Starting with the sale of the Ford Mustang in 1964, to the first Mach 1 Mustang in 1969, and the 1971 Mach 1’s appearance in Diamonds Are Forever, the cars have achieved great popularity. The Mach 1 continued until 1978, before being reintroduced in 2003, Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

A national obsession u by Andy Bryenton
Compared to a small, modern economy box, older cars seem like prehistoric monsters, with their vast size, wild colours, anachronistic fins and bumps and scant regard for emissions. While the powers that be would likely love to see many of these grand old cars off the road, either because of their dinosauric fuel consumption and emissions, or concerns about the safety of cars made without traction control and radar lane assist, they are more popular than ever. Hot rods on the bedroom walls of young Kiwis 20 years ago still thrill a new generation. It’s a fair bet that nobody, ever, will feel like that about a mid-priced grey hybrid. It means that the industry for keeping these old works of auto art on the road will be ongoing for a long, long time. As the cost of your old Valiant or Fairmont p From dad’s driveway to the status of superstardom, cars like this have achieved huge prices and cult followings approaches that of your house, the battle against rust and the urge to regain lost compression or customise for retro style will become a billion-dollar industry. Just quietly, it has already. If you have a classic project in the shed, now’s the time to call in the professionals and get it rolling. There’s another thing, too. In a dystopian near future when big government decides that we must all drive at 30km/h on the open highway, it will be better to have a big, comfortable car that looks incredible while going slow. That could only mean a classic. ¢
Ltd
How can you explain, then, the deep reverence, love and obsession Kiwis have for their classic cars? Impractical, sometimes costly, maybe even exasperating, these are nevertheless cars that inspire the same kind of loyalty as one’s favourite child or significant other. Not just beautiful to look at, they are also legitimately appreciating in value. The recent Kumeu hot rod show put this in perspective. Cars once priced at $20,000 are now selling for $50,000. Cars once not considered classics at all, like 1980s Falcons and Commodores, command prices higher than new small hatchbacks. All over the show, people were parting with wads of cash to secure their dream vehicles. It’s not just Americana, either. A pair of nicely maintained Mazda RX-7 rotary-engined classics recently went up on sale in the Waikato for $110,000. There’s every chance that this is a bargain. Other machines from yesteryear, still fresh in the memory, but appreciating fast, include local offerings such as the Triumph 2500 and the Ford Escort, and Europeans of the 80s, such as the Mercedes 190e and the BMW E30.
