Mayor-elect plans collaborative approach  by Paul Campbell

Kaipara mayor-elect, Dr Jason Smith, plans to ‘hit the ground running’ after he is sworn in on Friday, by attending a Northland mayoral forum with his counterparts in Whangarei and the Far North.

Dr Jason Smith topped the by-election poll last Saturday with 3021 votes cast by just over 42 per cent of the electorate, or 6727 voters. With only 60 special votes to be scrutinised, the election result stands. “I am looking forward to this meeting with the other mayors and chair of the regional council,” Jason said after his election win. “I already know these people and Kaipara can do a lot in partnership and many of our regional stories are shared stories. It’s about being included in Northland and I am very much a team player, and I look forward to working in collaboration with the other councils. ‘Fresh Start’ was a theme for my campaign, and the Kaipara voters have picked up on that. So, that fresh start is what I’m looking to bring to Kaipara’s relations with other partner councils in Northland and with central government too. I’ll also be looking to bring some of that will-of-the-people freshness into the Long Term Plan which is on the immediate council agenda.” A beef and sheep farmer, Jason has his Greenhill Stud at Ruawai. “I have a manager, and I will be a fulltime mayor for all that the job dictates. I shall be present at events as part of the community, not necessarily as mayor but as a ratepayer too, to hear the people of the community and gather clear messages from the people of the Kaipara. “We can send that message to Auckland and Wellington as needed.” From 2002 to 2005, he was CEO of the

Kaipara Development Agency and as mayor he plans to continue to attract industrial, commercial and residential development to the district under an umbrella of managed growth, as well as increase tourism activity. After the development agency, he gained his PhD in economic development public policy. “In 2012, I returned to the farm, winning two Ballance Farm Environment Awards.” He ran an ecotourism business on a forest reserve he owns on the farm, with a focus ‘on kauri forest, bushmen and billy tea’. Helped by his long-time partner Diane, outside of politics, he farms his 75-yearold Hereford stud, with another main interest in restoring his homestead of Devon Grove, built by his great-great grandfather in 1873. “I bought it from a distant cousin when it came up for sale,” he said. “It has been a 25 year work in progress, — so I have been a Kaipara ratepayer for a quarter of a century.”

Poultry farm causes a flap  by Ayla Miller

A free-range broiler chicken farm proposed by Tegel in Arapohue is ruffling a few feathers.

Rescue centre building begins

3

Tinopai’s new combined rescue services centre is a happening thing, with foundation earthworks now underway for a building to house the Coastguard North Kaipara rescue vessel, the rural fire tender and the first aid response vehicle.

 It was a full house at the Arapohue A&P Hall with residents interested to learn more about the proposed Tegel broiler poultry farm

Northland Regional Council and Kaipara District Council have received applications from Tegel Foods Limited for resource consents associated with the development and operation of a free-range poultry broiler farm at 5763 and 5802 State Highway 12, Arapohue, Dargaville. Members of the public packed the Arapohue A&P Hall last week during a meeting organised by the Dargaville Chicken Farm Community Information Group. A spokesperson for the group, Rosie Donovan, said she and other concerned Arapohue residents joined together to ensure the community was well-informed. “We wanted people to know what was in the huge amount of documentation [the Assessment of Effects on the Environment — AEE report].” Organisers encouraged people to make submissions opposing the odour, the 350 cubic metres of groundwater

that is proposed to be taken and the noise, to name a few. The AEE report states: “The proposed poultry farm once operational will result in 32 operational jobs. Thus, the poultry farm offers an opportunity to expand capabilities and opportunities within the poultry industry in Northland.” A statement from Tegel read: “Tegel recognises its application to develop a state-of-the-art free-range broiler farm in Northland is of significant interest to the local community, and for this reason the company voluntarily sought public notification of its resource consent application. “The publicly notified resource consent process will give any interested parties the opportunity to make submissions. Tegel is committed to working with the local community through this process.” An information evening will be held in the Dargaville High School Hall on Wednesday, February 21 at 7.30pm. 

 Work gets underway for the Tinopai rescue centre

Community fundraising activity provided a kick-start to the project, followed by a $111,000 lotteries grant, which boosted the total to a little over $171,000. Fundraising for the remaining $20,000 is continuing. “We are planning a sponsors’ wall in the centre, with a brick at $50, a block at $200, and a beam at $500,” said Tinopai Emergency Services Inc treasurer, Sarolta Bernhardt. The north Kaipara is now home for the Tinopai-based Manaia Rescue; which is powered by twin motors

providing a combined 270 horsepower and capable of 40 knots if required. Two coastguard skippers have now qualified in its operation — Allan Crabb and Bobby Smith, after earning their masters qualifications as Industry Specific Certificates. Both men were on site as the earthworks got underway last week. “It was a little wet, but good to get things started,” said Mr. Crabb. A Northland brain injury support group is celebrating 20 years of providing advocacy, support and information to the injured and their caregivers.

A festival celebrating all things Pasifika will take place on Saturday, February 24 at Hihiaua Peninsula Park, Whangarei and organisers are encouraging people from the regions to come along.

Around 36,000 people in New Zealand suffer from traumatic brain injuries every year and Brain Injury Association Northland provide a liason service to assist those with brain injuries and their families to find appropriate professional help. The group hold monthly support group meetings every third Thursday of the month at Dargaville Hospital. Northland branch founding member, Alex Stewart, first  Northland branch founding member founding member became involved in advocating Alex Stewart for those with brain injuries when his son was involved in a car the Brain Injury Association which covers from Wellsford to the cape. accident in Australia. “It’s very important we have liaison Mr Stewart and his wife Mary brought officers because they are the link their son back to New Zealand after his accident, where they became involved between the brain injured person, in forming the Head Injury Society in their family and the support services,” Auckland in 1981. Later they changed Mr Stewart said. The group will also be arranging the name to the Brain Injury Association. The couple moved to Ruawai in 1998 some events during Brain Injury and founded the Northland branch of Awareness week from March 1923. More information will be made available closer to the time. Each island nation will set up its own ‘village’ around the site, to show their arts and crafts, serve up Pasifika delicacies, as well as provide entertainment and information. Dargaville resident Kuli Fisi’iahi says he and his wife Luseane will be attending the Pasifika Festival and running a stall selling Tongan handcrafts, tapas and mats. They will also be selling chop suey with pork and kumara and a dish called lu pulu, which is made out of taro leaves, coconut and corned beef and cooked in an umu — a traditional polynesian oven in the ground. “We lived in Auckland for 12 years and there were a lot of Pasifika and Polynesian festivals there. In this part of the country, the rural side of Northland, we don’t have many opportunities to get together and celebrate our Pasifika way of life and lifestyle. If we have that opportunity, why not go and celebrate. That’s why we want to go to the festival — to share our culture,” Kuli says. Festival director, May Seager, says the festival will be a taste of home for many people. “It’s a good day to celebrate our culture and there will be lots of Pasifika food including pani popo, raw fish and

lots more traditional dishes.” Hip hop artists, Che Fu and King Kapisi, will take the stage along with MCs John Tui and Pua Magasiva. The festival will be hosted by the local community from Tuvalu who, along with Aotearoa, Fiji, Tonga, Niue, Samoa and the Cook Islands will showcase the cultural richness and diversity of the Pacific. Hawaiki cable lands  by Ayla Miller

The 15,000km Hawaiki international submarine cable has landed at Mangawhai heads and is expected to boost global digital connectivity and Northland economic development.

 Te Uri o Hau and Hawaiki team during the welcome and blessing of the cable

The cable is a key project in the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan and Northland Regional Council Chairman, Bill Shepherd, says both the council and Northland Inc have been long-term, committed backers of the cable project over the years. “Improving Northland’s economic performance is a key council goal and in that regard, this launch is a significant win for both the Whangarei District and the wider Northland region.” Chairman Shepherd says the cable project is an example of how economic performance can be potentially enhanced by careful use of public money, as with the council’s investment in Northland Inc. “The regional council, Northland Inc and the other key players involved in this exciting project believe it will generate significant flow-on benefits for Northland in having increased diversity in its connections to the rest of the world.”

• • • • • •

Northland Inc chief executive, Dr David Wilson, says Northland is in position to be a leader in the digital and technology space. “Hawaiki is just the beginning. There is still plenty of work to be done in connecting Northland, supporting our rangatahi to be digitally savvy and innovative, and gearing up our businesses and workforce to realise the opportunities in front of us in readiness for an advanced digital future. We look forward to continuing the solid relationship we have built with Hawaiki and utilising their expertise in helping Northland to go digital, and go global.” The cable links New Zealand to Australia, Hawaii and mainland United States, with landing stations at Mangawhai Heads and American Samoa. The cable will be switched on in June, and will ultimately double New Zealand’s international communications capacity. 

Fire restrictions remain  by Ayla Miller

Despite the abundance of rain over the past few weeks the Restricted Fire Season will not be lifted just yet. The Restricted Fire Season means anyone wanting to light a fire in the open air must have a permit. Principal Rural Fire Officer, Myles Taylor, says that despite the low fire danger rating they are reluctant to lift the restriction, as there is still eight weeks of the fire season to go. “The potential for things to dry out in some areas still exists. We monitor the fire danger rating every day and at the moment it is low due to all the rain we have had, which has been great for my volunteers as they haven’t had many callouts.” Mr Taylor says the main message is that they are monitoring the risk very closely. “We realise it’s a low fire risk at the moment, but things in Northland can change very quickly so we are cautious about lifting the restrictions at the moment. We are only in

February and we want to make sure we don’t get caught out. It is very difficult to put another ban back in place if we lift it and things dry out. “I have instructed my permit officers to be relatively relaxed with permit conditions and since permits are free the restricted season shouldn’t cause to much inconvenience for most people, but it still provides us the opportunity to maintain some control. Our biggest concern is high winds, which often precede a rain event. It can dry out areas quickly, especially grass, and cause fires to escape.” Mr Taylor says they will lift the restrictions as soon as possible, but for the moment it is still a Restricted Fire Season. Updates are posted on checkitsalright.nz and permit applications are available at havingafire.org.nz.

KAIPARA SPOTLIGHT Kaipara District Council

Road Works for the District – February 2018

Proposed Temporary Road Closure

PUBLIC NOTICE

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the Kaipara District Council hereby gives notice that the Dynamo Cycling & Sport Club Inc has made an application to have the following roads temporarily closed on the days and at the times set out below for the purpose of the BDO Tour of Northland Cycle Challenge. Victoria St (between Edward St & Normanby St) - Saturday 17 March 2018 – 09.30am to 01.00pm Edward St (between Victoria St & Normanby St) - Sunday 18 March 2018 – 07.00am to 9.00am Any objections to this proposal should be in the hands of the Kaipara District Council no later than 4.00pm on Monday 05 March 2018.

Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during February include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and grading of select roads pending sufficient rainfall. Area specific works planned during February include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the District. • Unsealed/Sealed pothole repair throughout the District when conditions are suitable. • Roadside vegetation spraying – Mangawhai area, and the southern side of SHW12 from Topuni to Ruawai. • Water table restoration – Batley Road, Bayleys Coast Road, Waimate Road. • Sealed Pavement Repairs – Throughout the Ruawai and Paparoa area. • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Tokatoka Road, Lusk Road, Birch Road. • Culvert Flushing –Tain Road, Dunn Road. • Culvert Replacement/Riprap – Bayleys Basin Road. We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of February if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue. Area specific works completed during the last month include: • Water table restoration – Hilliam Road, Keer Road. • Sealed Pavement Repairs – Dunn Road, Paparoa Oakleigh Road, Te Kowhai Road. • Culvert Renewals – Church Road Chamber installation. • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Monteith South Road, Cove Road, Bayleys Beach, Access Road, Curnow Road, Franklin Road, Matakohe Wharf Road. • Sight Improvements – Avoca Road. All routine work is done in cycles across the District. In endeavouring to provide good roads at the most economic cost, sometimes only spot grading and metalling is done as it is about one-quarter of the price of blanket metalling and grading that has tended to be done in the past. Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information.

Are you a recent university graduate or librarian looking for your next move? Are you enthusiastic about books and reading? Are you confident in the digital space? Council Meetings – February/March Please note locations and times are subject to change, check website for most up to date information. Council Meeting for Mayoral Swearing-In 9:00am Friday 23 February Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall, Hokianga Road, Dargaville Council Meeting 9:00 am Wednesday 28 February Ruawai-Tokatoka War Memorial Hall, Ruawai. Harding Park & Pou Tu Te Rangi 2:00 pm Wednesday 07 March Lighthouse Function Centre, Harding Park, Dargaville.

NOTE FOR DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS Between November and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement. This introduces fresh aggregate into the failure, in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers.

Council would like to thank you for your co-operation as work is undertaken across the district to improve our communities and infrastructure. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information

Rollin’ for hospice

A procession of tractors, jeeps and trucks are travelling 2,600km across New Zealand and will be stopping in Dargaville to raise funds and awareness for Hospice Kaipara.

Two Dargaville High School Year 13 science students have been accepted into the Otago University Advanced School Sciences Academy.

This is the second Great New Zealand Tractor Trek and will be led by founder Phil Aish who ran a similar event in 2016 to honour a promise made to his wife Janice in her last weeks of life. Phil and Janice wanted to say thank you to Hospice for the support Mercy Hospice in Auckland provided the Aish family during Janice’s last days. When discussing the practicalities of such a Trek, Janice told him to ‘do it’. “You can’t put a price on having the burden of care lifted off your shoulders when someone close to you has a life-

limiting illness,” says Phil. In 2016, Phil and his supporters collected $100,000 and hope to do the same this year. All donations go directly to hospice services. The trek will arrive in Dargaville on Monday, March 5 at 1pm at the Countdown car park and locals are invited to come along and check out the line-up. People can also support the work of Hospice by donating to the Tractor Trek NZ 2018 at givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/ the-great-nz-tractor-trek-2018. 

Planting a billion trees in ten years is a huge challenge. The government’s aim is long term – for employment and climate change targets decades into the future. Today’s children will get the rewards when they are grown up. The new trees could add 500,000 hectares to New Zealand’s established 1.7 million hectares of plantation forests. That land is our contribution already. We’ll produce 32 million cubic metres of logs for timber this year and we replant the land after we harvest. We look forward to sharing; with government, iwi and farmers, all of the great future which comes with growing trees. Let’s plant.

New endeavour to keep the West pumping

Empowering small businesses

The pumps which run much that’s profitable and hygienic in modern society are a bit like the oarsmen aboard an oldfashioned Roman ship. Tucked away down in the dark, working hard, it’s almost as if they’re not there. But then they stop working, you can be left all at sea. That’s why it takes a specialist with years of experience to keep the Kaipara’s formidable number of water pumps, bore pumps, effluent pumps and dam pumps running smoothly. In fact, those numbers are so large — and the accompanying tasks of trenching, piping and servicing so extensive — that a new venture has been formed just to take care of this facet of liquid reticulation. Dargaville Pump and Filter is a name which says it all, and it’s both a specialisation and an expansion for business owner and operator Todd Mullinder’s previous ‘Jack of All’ company. With more and more people seeking out his help with matters of pumps in all their forms, Todd has taken the opportunity to start 2018 fresh, branching out into a very specialised field. It’s one in which he enjoys years of experience, dating back to the early days of his career — and his experience here working alongside the late Mr Noel Remnant as well as Advance Dairy and Pump. As technology has changed he’s kept up, keeping in contact with big names in the industry such as Davies, Grundfos and Hansen to assure a ready supply of robust and tested products — Kiwi made wherever possible. This also means that Dargaville Pump and Filter have a large catalogue when it comes to filters for domestic and rural water

purification systems. These play a vital role in keeping families healthy, so making it easier and more cost effective to change them out as necessary is important, especially in an area so reliant on creek, dam, bore and tank supply. Todd also supplies quality UV systems for better health. With a pair of powerful trenching machines, the full catalogue from leading farm materials provider Rural Direct, and a go-anywhere mobile workshop, Todd and his Dargaville Pump and Filter ute are sure to become a familiar sight on Kaipara roads. After all, with a plethora of pumps making up an important part of both rural living and productive farming as well as small town life, the need for an expert when things need fixing has never been greater.

THREE SMART REASONS TO CALL THE FLOORING XPERTS

Chartered Accountant Valeria Maw and her colleagues at Ean Brown Partners are offering free seminars to help Kaipara and Whangarei people further their understanding of Xero accounting software and take control of their finances. Valeria studied at Massey University before working for Deloitte in Auckland. She lives on a farm in Matakohe with her husband Peter and they have two children. She was motivated to offer these free seminars as she feels strongly that empowering people to take ownership of their own financials helps them to grow their business. “There’s a lot of interest and need for this in Dargaville, particularly with the younger generation. They want to be in control. Xero is immediate, up to date and means no more paper. It is entirely cloud based.” The seminars will be divided into two sessions — one for beginners and one for advanced. The beginners seminars are aimed at those who are contemplating moving to Xero and the advanced sessions will support businesses who are already using Xero and want to maximise their efficiency. “Accounting can be very complicated and I like to help people. We all have different strengths and I want to free up other people’s time so they can focus doing what they want to do.” Valeria says she enjoys working in a smaller community and in a more intimate environment. “I find it rewarding to work with smaller, family owned businesses. I enjoy that face-

to-face interaction. Ean Brown Partners as a company is active in the community and wants to give back. Seminar 1 — beginners, 12pm on Tuesday, February 27 and seminar 2 — advanced, 12pm on Wednesday, March 7. Whangarei seminars will be held at The Orchard, 85 Cameron Street. Seminar 1 — beginners, 12pm, Monday February 26 and seminar 2 — advanced, 12pm, Tuesday, March 6.

FIELD DAYS

1-3 MAR 2018

That’s why visiting this immense expo with its innovations, ideas, huge machines, hot new vehicles and home comforts takes more than just a sunhat, debit card and some stamina. Planning ahead is key to getting the most out of the three-day agricultural fair, whether you’re there for the spectacle or down to talk big business with the brokers of heavy machinery. In order to help make it easy, we’ve put together a section, which covers the whole spread, with a colour map and easy-to-use index. We’ve also focussed in on some of the big specials and selected sites, which are hot this year. A quick look will help you plan out a route around the tents and stalls, taking in everything you want to see, including the sports and demonstration action and the all-important food hall tent. For the serious rural business person, it’s also time to consider the financial side of field days — charting out a budget for any new machinery or

improvements the event has to offer. There really is so much to see and do, that a bit of forward planning now might help pack it all in to the time you have to join us here in Dargaville next week — then again, there’s a reason this huge annual festival lasts three whole days! 

Chopper needs covered

Why to choose a Wagener

As a locally operated company HeliNorth pilots know the region intimately and can satisfy quick transportation or agricultural needs.

Wagener Stoves is a third-generation family business proudly handcrafting Kiwi designed and made solid fuel stoves right here in the Far North.

Weather affects their services, but their pilots are trained and experienced to handle most of the adverse situations created by the climate with skill and safety. “Being a pilot is an awesome job. As I was growing up I wanted to be either a farmer or a pilot. I thought I would be a pilot, when I was young, and then become a farmer. I am still a pilot as I haven’t quite got the farm yet,” said HeliNorth base manager Reuben Wright. Their trained pilots have worked for years in providing helicopter aid and services from farm work to transport. Catering to the large upper North Island region they specialise as a commercial and agricultural support service; but HeliNorth pilots are always happy to accommodate scenic flights over some of the most spectacular landscape in the southern hemisphere. “It is a fun job and we meet lots of interesting people including farmers, and they all have their own farming style,” Reuben says. As a pilot, safety is always the top priority for all concerned. Reuben says never to approach a helicopter from

Their range is unique in the market and built to last. Sparky is Wagener’s hugely popular wee fire and new big brother Leon was launched a year ago, with great market response. The younger lads at Wagener Stoves have been playing with colour on the stoves, and are now offering contrasting panels to compliment your décor and personalise your fire. Colours currently available are: shimmering rose, metallic moss green, sky blue and metallic blue all in top-quality high temperature Stove Bright paints. Opt for a pop of colour or a loud splash, the choice is yours. Many will be familiar with the CookTop Wagener Stove based on the original Wagener Stove, which was first produced nearly 40 years ago. This is a robust, hard-working stove, which has certainly stood the test of time and can boast that the very, very first Wagener is still warming a home in the very Far North. The Butler Multi is a modern day ‘chip heater’, which is a high-performance hot water heater and teams up fabulously with a solar installation for those wanting self-sufficiency. And last, but certainly not least, is the ultimate in solid fuel appliances — the cooker! Compare the Kiwi designed

As helicopters are noisy, people think they need to hurry to or from it, but you don’t. When you rush your brain isn’t thinking clearly. Take your time as safety is of paramount importance.” If you are interested in learning more about helicopters or what HeliNorth can do for you, visit them at the Northland Field Days.

PLAN FOR YOUR FIELD DAYS Fun for everyone

ADVERTORIAL

Your partner in productivity CLAAS have developed a reputation through the years for producing just the right tool for the job, and their Arion tractor range is a perfect example of this close attention to detail. The current Arion 640 epitomises one quality, which farmers truly value — reliability. To CLAAS engineers, this doesn’t just mean start-everytime rugged construction — though that’s there in spades. The Arion 640 is designed to fulfil a complex role in the farm hierarchy, delivering up to 165 horsepower to tackle a wide variety of jobs. Four PTO speeds allow the attachment of many different implements, while a longer wheelbase and a firmly planted, rock-steady stance mean it’s possible to handle even the larger tools in the shed with grace. From mowing to harrowing, to handling bales, this CLAAS is a class act, and part of its appeal is the fact that it’s comfortable and easy to use. With a four-point cab suspension system ironing out the bumps, intuitive controls and that all-important addition — powerful air conditioning — this mid-sized machine

offers the comforts usually associated with the high-horsepower kings of the open field. Team up with a CLAAS front loader to create a small, but mighty combination that fits into hundreds of niches on the farm.

ON THE FARM

The Northland Field Days is a highly anticipated annual event and is widely recognised as Northland’s largest annual agricultural event.

The 34th show will be held over March 1-3 at Awakino Point and will include affordable family fun, food to suit all tastes, entertainment and farming equipment, information, products and much more. A crowd favourite is the tractor pull competition. The first event will be held on Thursday, March 1 and is the business challenge. Competitors can be novice or experienced. The field days team will put you in a tractor with a teacher and then swap you into another tractor for the second leg of the race. The second event is set for Friday, March 2 and is the Bank Challenge. The banks challenge their rivals to see who will take home the trophy. The main event will happen on Saturday, March 3. This is for operators who are experienced, novice, a contractor or just trying it for the first time. There is a prize pool of up to $3,000,

so come along and be part of an actionpacked three days, or support the competitors from the sidelines. There will be a comprehensive range of trade exhibits, innovations, machinery and implements for the farmers; along with plenty for families and people wanting a taste of rural life. The old favourites will all be there including the Clydesdales, musicians, NEST rescue helicopter, Caro’s Crazy Critters animal farm, Kidzone, Sheep ‘n Show, Logger Sports, Sheep Dog Trials, Young Farmers Cattle judging and Lawn Mowing races. The littlies will enjoy the bouncy castles and fairground rides, and the Dargaville Fire Brigade will also be running a free children’s mini combat challenge. Ticket prices are reasonably priced at $12 for an adult day pass and children are $5 each. A family of two adults and three children can enter for $30. 

ON THE ROAD FOR FIELD DAYS The journey is a destination  by Andy Bryenton

Traveling to Northland Field Days can be quite an undertaking in itself — especially for those who are coming in to the annual hub for all things rural from far-flung homesteads and small rural towns. An epic drive by road, through some of the greatest scenery in New Zealand awaits, but there’s plenty to plan for on the trip, long before the flags and signs of the field days itself come over the horizon.

In fact, there’s so much on the way that it can be an adventure in itself. On those extra long trips, breaking up the drive with a stop in at one of the Kaipara region’s many roadside cafes is a must, if only to sample some of our local favourites. This goes double for those who want to take home some local produce — bring some spare change for roadside honesty boxes and google fresh recipes on the move. Of course there’s plenty to stop and see in the many small towns you’ll pass through on your way north from Auckland and west across the heartland of the Kaipara. If it’s not urgent to be there when the Field Days gates open, a stop

in to check out the fun, funky, quirky or just plain interesting stores, galleries and markets, which dot State Highway 12. Dargaville itself has some must-see destinations as well, along with plenty of options to relax, refuel and replenish after a hot day at the showgrounds. Whether you’re heading off late in the afternoon or staying the night, the town by the banks of the Northern Wairoa River offers dining choices aplenty. From its historic hotels, to the riverside boating club, through to international cuisine from many lands — kebabs, Indian, Thai and much more. With over eight million hitting the road since its debut back in the swinging sixties, the Ford Transit van has become one of those brand names like ‘sellotape’ which define a whole concept. The real deal, however, has continued to evolve with automotive technology, becoming a comfortable and very competent cargo mover with a few neat surprises up its sleeve.

We are now your ONE STOP SHOP FOR auto electrical and air conditioning!

Now in its fourth very successful generation, the Ford Transit comes in an array of optional configurations, which make it easy to customize for different applications. Courier drivers may love its low loading height and sliding side doors, while engineers opt for double doors on the rear, and those moving whole pallets of goods jump in for a super-high roof and more internal space. Long or short wheelbase, there’s room for everything you need on the job in here, and smart ways to carry it — for example, superlong pipes or ladders can be stowed partially under the passenger seats. Standard boards of timber fit in either upright or stacked. And there’s ample space, with up to 8.29 metres of cargofriendly, flat deck for your convenience. All of this — and all those door options, tie-downs and mounting points for boxes and tools — is only south of the cabin, though. Up front, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in one of

for such a large working machine. Ford have thrown down the gauntlet and stated their intent to become the world’s top seller of light commercials. Having dusted off the competition in the ute sector, it’s time to consider Ford’s versatile and evergreen van range. The applications and combinations are endless, so your best bet is to talk to Lindsay West and the Dargaville Ford team at the field days. They can put together the perfect combo of power, comfort, access and space to tailor a Transit to your needs. 

Ford’s other models, because gone is the day of the strictly utilitarian work van. In both comfort, connectivity, visibility and handling, this van is a match for modern SUVs, and was even suggested as a better alternative to the current crop of European sports utilities on Amazon’s hit car show The Grand Tour. Why? Well, they weren’t just poking fun at the SUV makers — the Ford Transit really is that comfy on long drives. And an economical engine provides 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres fuel economy — refreshing and surprising

The power behind the machines

100

 by Andy Bryenton

Today, like every day, farmers will be up before the sunrise, and one of the first things many of them will do is punch the automatic ignition on a Honda quad, two-wheeler or side-by-side. It’s testament to the engineering prowess of the big Japanese manufacturer, that all of those people trust all of those machines to start first time — and to carry them through a day of hard work in tough conditions. It’s not just down to the skill of the original designers and builders of Honda’s fleet. There’s more to being the top name in your field than just creating a sturdy range of products. That initial spark of genius has to be matched by dedication on the ground, in the regions where those vehicles are going to work. In short, it takes a team who are just as much a finely honed machine, as the bikes and quads they service. Dargaville Honda is a perfect case in point. Serving a large swathe of the rural heartland in the mid north, their customers demand a lot from their big red quads and side by sides — and even more from their off-road bikes, when it’s time to take a break from farming and hit the trails and tracks. That means constant work in the workshop servicing, maintaining and repairing a huge fleet that’s relied on daily. In order to ensure the best quality work, and to make sure there will be Honda mechanics and technicians on call for years to come, Dargaville Honda are very engaged with their apprenticeship programme, providing opportunities to local young people and giving them a skill for life. Open up the entire toolbox  by Andy Bryenton

It takes a big man to admit he knows nothing about what he’s looking for when buying a car. After all, it’s the manly thing to do to stand around an open bonnet and ruminate sagely about lifters and lumpy cams, extractors and fuel injection. Right? If you do go ahead, though, and admit that you don’t know a CVT transmission from a pot of noodles, your average car salesman will start by asking what you are going to use your new vehicle for. It’s the same when it comes to taking care of the yard. Of course, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, all we’re really looking to do is slash back the ever encroaching tide of vegetation, whether it’s gorse and blackberry, kikuyu, box hedges or just the plain old lawn. But that first question remains the same. What are you going to use that outdoor power equipment for? It’s an important one, because every niche has been filled in the family tree of outdoor power. Do you need petrol or electric? Is lightweight more important than raw power? Is your lawn a postage stamp in the suburbs or a rambling wilderness in the countryside? Devices exist to fit everywhere from in the hands of the elderly hobby gardener through to the tough commercial forester, and as you can imagine, mixing up one with the other is more than just embarrassing. That’s why the team at Godfrey’s Mowers and Chainsaws are hitting this year’s field days with more than just a bigger range than ever — they’ve expanded their team as well, so that their customers are assured

of getting the right tool for the job. To take an example, there are now more options than ever before in the world of ride-on mowers. At one end sits the small two-wheel drive lawn tractor for the suburban backyard. Scale-up, and you can incorporate a wider deck, fuel injection and power steering for bigger tasks. Add four-wheel drive for steep or difficult terrain, or upsize to a big zero-turn mower suitable for massive spaces and commercial applications. The Kaipara’s varied landscapes and

mix of town, rural and lifestyle block homeowners means there’s something there for everyone — but Trevor and the team are there to ensure that you get the ‘goldilocks’ effect — not too big, not too small, but just right. Hence the sheer number of names on offer, from Stihl to Stiga, Cub Cadet to Masport and Victa — plus many more. You wouldn’t pick up a hammer to do a spanner’s job, so get the right tool for your yard work the easy way — talk to the professionals. 
