Dargaville Museum recently unveiled a new brand as the ‘Kaipara Museum’ which has received mixed reviews in the community. Dargaville Museum Society president Don Elliott said the committee had a discussion regarding the museum brand two weeks prior to the visit of television show Heritage Rescue. “We are still trading as Dargaville Museum and still will be for a while. As far as we are concerned it’s still our trading name. The future of the Kaipara Museum brand will be decided once the society

‘Kid’s park’ plan for Tinopai

New road ‘huge’ for Kaipara

u by Anna Harding

u by Paul Campbell

A community meeting in Tinopai recently revealed new concept plans for a proposed activity zone in the area.

The proposed new route for the upgraded highway north from Auckland to the west of Dome Valley and onwards has “huge benefits for us,” says Kaipara Mayor, Greg Gent. serious crash injury rates by as much as 80 per cent. Transport Minister Simon Bridges says the indicative route is a “significant step forward to connect communities, get people to places of work and freight to key export markets, which are all vital in helping Northland’s economy grow. “It will reduce the overall travel time between Warkworth and Te Hana by bypassing town centres, and avoiding the steep and winding Dome Valley.” Once built, trucks and heavy vehicles will be diverted around townships, reducing around 90 per cent of through traffic. The indicative route is being shared with the public to further refine the route, with NZTA seeking to protect the route for future construction by applying for consents by 2018. A series of public information days began on February 18, with meetings still scheduled this week: • Feb 23 — Warkworth Masonic Hall, 3–7pm • Feb 25 — Wellsford District Community Centre, 11am–3pm • Feb 28 — Te Hana Hall, 3–7pm

“We’ve been trying to get something done for the kids for nine years, because the kids down here don’t have anything,” said chairperson for the Tinopai Community Kids Project committee, Deena Hickey. Kaipara District Council is providing land for the project and has set aside funding for the playground’s maintenance. The council had money set aside for a new playground in the area, but the committee asked if they could use it combined with p Peter Boyd showing the community his designs for the proposed activity zone external funding to make the area bigger. For the rest, the committee The proposed activity zone will have will apply for grants and seek local swings, a climbing net, a small court for volunteer support. “I am thrilled to hear the news. Every kilometre that the road gets closer to the Brynderwyns is great for the fortunes of the western side of Kaipara,” he said. “It makes Auckland’s population of 1.4 million people able to easily come north to our district as a weekend destination, with an economic flow on into our community, and of course opens a two-way flow for goods and services.” The indicative route for continuing the link into Northland would join the Puhoi to Warkworth section of motorway near Kaipara Flats Road, travelling north to the west of the Dome Valley to the Hoteo river before heading east over SH1 to an interchange proposed at Wayby Valley Road south of Wellsford. Another motorway interchange is proposed near Mangawhai Road, with the motorway then meeting the existing SH1 north of Vipond Road at Te Hana. The New Zealand Transport Agency expects the location of the new motorway to the west of the Dome Forest, will be more reliable and cut

Father and son, Grant and Josh Nilsson have returned home from the annual Norfolk Island Clay Target Championships with a number of wins to their names.

Calling for feedback

Mangawhai Bowl Jam

u by Anna Harding

Friends of Kai Iwi Lakes, Northland Regional Council and Kaipara District Council are calling for public feedback about their proposed bylaws on Kai Iwi Lake use, due by Friday, February 24.

p Nearly 2,000 spectators turned up to the Mangawhai Activity Zone over Waitangi weekend to witness the country’s best skateboarders and locals in action. Shaun Boucher won the Tararua Highest Air competition and Bowman Hansen took the first place title in the Open Men’s category. p Submissions sought on proposed Kai Iwi lakes navigation

The combined feedback form can be downloaded from KDC’s website and returned by post, over the counter at KDC council offices, at the camp office at Pine Beach, Kai Iwi Lakes, or at bylaws@kaipara.govt.nz. The Kai Iwi feedback form can be downloaded from www.kaiiwilakes.nz or it can be picked up from Randell’s Motorcycles on Kapia St in Dargaville. “KDC have said they will undertake a formal consultation process on a proposed bylaw later in the year. The proposed bylaw drafted will consider initial feedback as well as the

submissions provided in last year’s consultation,” says communications manager Heidi Clark. Friend’s of Kai Iwi Lakes propose powerboats be kept to five knots while council suggests it be a restricted boating area. Friends of Kai Iwi lakes also believe that “with good management and clear signs there would only be a need for one swimming zone at Pine Beach rather than several as suggested by the KDC” says Friend’s chair, Colin Rowse. Lake Taharoa is now the only lake in Northland available for powered craft. ¢

Where It’s Easy to Live Draft Concept Map for the Kai Iwi Lakes Navigational Bylaw and Kai Iwi Lakes Bylaw

Conserve Water District Wide

The final Kai Iwi Lakes (Taharoa Domain) Reserve Management Plan (RMP) was adopted by Kaipara District Council (KDC) in September 2016. The RMP outlines how the Taharoa Domain is to be managed and developed over the next ten years. In order to give effect to the RMP and help with the management of the Taharoa Domain, a Navigational Bylaw is being drafted (by the Northland Regional Council) to control water-based activities, as well as a Kai Iwi Lakes Bylaw (drafted by KDC) for some land-based activities that complement the Navigational Bylaw. Over the summer period the Northland Regional Council, with the support of KDC, are seeking feedback on a draft concept map for the Kai Iwi Lakes. The map can be viewed on Council’s website at www.kaipara.govt.nz . The map shows indicative areas of where activities may occur on the water, and also where land-based activities such as parking and boat ramps could be located. Please note that it is intended to have day parking available at the camping grounds. This is not clearly indicated on the maps. This is an informal consultation round to gain feedback on these areas. To place feedback on the draft concept map please email Council at bylaws@kaipara.govt.nz or alternatively print off the feedback form from Council’s website and return to Council by post to Private Bag 1001, Dargaville 0340 or over the counter at Council’s offices located in Dargaville and Mangawhai or at the Camp Office at Pine Beach (Kai Iwi Lakes). The feedback period will close on Friday 24 February 2017. A formal consultation period on a final draft bylaw will be undertaken later in 2017.

SPORT RURAL TRAVEL FUND 2016/2017 Need travel funds for your junior sports team? If your team’s 5 – 19 year olds, taking part in local competitions and resident in Kaipara District, the Rural Travel Fund might be able to help. We can grant up to 50% of your project cost. Applications are open now and must be received by 4.30pm Friday 31 March 2017. Forms available on our website www.kaipara.govt.nz, or from Council’s offices, 42 Hokianga Road, Dargaville or Unit 6, The Hub, 6 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai. Want to know more? Contact Paula Guy Stuve on 0800 727 059 or email council@kaipara.govt.nz

Council urges all residents to conserve water to ensure that water supplies for essential household purposes can be maintained. Council is also asking rural households not connected to public water supplies to conserve water, because the bulk water suppliers who top up their water tanks depend on the Council’s community supplies for their water. Everyone can help save water by using some of the following tips: • Minimal use of garden sprinklers and hoses • Avoid washing vehicles • Not filling swimming pools • Check that taps are not dripping. Now is also a timely reminder for residents on water tanks to check their tanks regularly and top up (anticipate demand and prepare in advance). For more information on the status of the water supply, please visit the Council’s website at www.kaipara.govt.nz, telephone 09 439 3123 or visit the Be Water Wise website at www.bewaterwise.org.nz. — Thanks for your continued effort

Prohibited Fire Season

Pursuant to Section 22(2) of the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 the Rural Fire Authorities of Kaipara District Council, Whangarei District Council and the Department of Conservation, hereby declare a Prohibited Fire Season to be in force from midnight Tuesday 10th January 2017, until further notice. The prohibition will remain in force until weather conditions and fire danger indicators warrant its uplifting, and applies to all land in the Kaipara District and Whangarei District except land administered by the Department of Conservation. Any permits issued for this period are now cancelled. All fires in the open air are prohibited with the exception of the following fires outside of Department of Conservation areas: Commercially constructed barbeques, incinerators (complying with NZS 5262, 5435 and 5442), cooking fires such as umu, hangi and spit fires, subject to the following conditions: a)

WATER RESTRICTIONS ARE NOW IN FORCE

Pursuant to Council’s General Bylaw 1609 and Council’s resolution there is a ban for all those connected to the Dargaville and Baylys Beach public water supply for the following purposes:• All hosepipe use • All irrigation and sprinkler use. The ban will remain in place until further notice. Despite the recent rain, water restrictions are still a necessary precaution to delay the need for more stringent restrictions so we need to conserve water now to avoid shortages over the next couple of months. The Kaipara District Council urges all residents to conserve water to ensure that water supplies for essential household purposes can be maintained. Council is also asking rural households not connected to water supplies to conserve water, because the bulk water suppliers who top up their water tanks depend on the Council’s community supplies for their water. Anyone found breaching the restrictions could be liable for a fine of $500. Curt Martin, General Manager Infrastructure

News from Kaipara February 2017

Study could ease future drought woes IN BRIEF Kaipara is at the heart of a groundbreaking study investigating irrigation as a potential tool to ease the impacts of future droughts and boost Northland’s economy. North Kaipara and Ruawai form one of two important ‘clusters’ where evidence is being gathered to assess the commercial viability of community irrigation schemes. Kaipara-based regional councillor Penny Smart says the council and Ministry for Primary Industries, spurred by a series of severe droughts, had in 2014 contributed $75,000 each for the ‘Northland Strategic Irrigation Infrastructure Study’. Only about 8500 hectares of Northland is irrigated (mainly for horticulture); the study found another 92,000ha could potentially be irrigated, contributing almost $250 million annually to GDP and employing the equivalent of 3400 people fulltime. The study urged more detailed work focussing on the Kaipara cluster, as well as another in the Far North, and the council had last year agreed to provide up to $165,000 to fund this, again with a matching government contribution. Penny says the fact that the latest work – due for completion in several months – is being done as the region suffers through yet another drought is not lost on those involved.

COUNCIL ‘LIVE’ WITH CR PENNY SMART 3:30pm-4pm Tuesday 07 March The proposed rating area includes properties within urban boundaries of towns along the route, plus any other property within approximately 400 metres of the route.

DRY AS A BONE: Penny Smart’s husband Hal Harding, left, discusses the latest drought with Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy at the couple’s Kaipara dairy farm recently. Just 35ha of the 513ha Aoroa Farms property is currently irrigated (pictured). In future, irrigation could be a massive asset for Kaipara.

The study looks in more detail at the demand and supply viability of a community water storage facility and the likely commercial viability of storage options. “The scoping is a mix of modelling work, some local knowledge and experience in understanding Northland conditions, as well as stakeholder engagement to come up with some potentially feasible options.” She says besides irrigation, water captured as part of any scheme could also potentially be used for public and stock water supply. “It’s likely any future irrigation

North farmers take the lead Kaipara-based regional councillor and dairy farmer Penny Smart is excited by the opportunities offered by a project that will see Northland farmers work together to lift the performance of the region’s agriculture industry. Extension 350 is a collaboration between the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), Northland Regional Council, regional economic development agency Northland Inc, DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand. Launched last year to help farmers share knowledge and gain access to specialist advice, it will initially involve 15 target farms – 10 dairy and five sheep and beef – to be selected shortly. Farmer mentors and local farm consultants will support the target farms working to achieve better performance. “Neighbouring farmers will also share their information and learn from the target farmer’s experience,” says Penny.

Tune in to our Facebook Live session to discuss the regional council’s role in the Northland irrigation study, Extension 350 and/or Tangihua pest control.

Hukerenui dairy farmer and former bank manager Luke Beehre is the project leader. Penny says over time Extension 350 aims to involve 350 farms directly, which will have a positive ripple effect throughout the regional economy. She says MPI, DairyNZ and Beef + Lamb New Zealand will have information about the project at their stands at the upcoming Northland Field Days in Dargaville, which runs from Thursday 02 to Saturday 04 March. Information on the Extension 350 project is also available online via the DairyNZ website: www.dairynz.co.nz/about-us/ regional-projects/northland-projects

initiatives will involve a number of smaller schemes, rather than one or two massive ones – for a number of reasons, including practicality and affordability.” Penny says even after the current work is completed, a great deal more research and science will be needed, given the many millions it will cost the region to irrigate in a much more planned and strategic manner. “But if we can eventually position ourselves to maximise the economic, employment and environmental opportunities offered by improved irrigation, it would make a massive difference to Northland.”

Tangihua pests targeted Plant and animal pests scattered through more than 1400 hectares of iconic bush, scrub and farmland between Whangarei and Dargaville will be targeted as Tangihua joins the ranks of Northland’s official Community Pest Control Areas (CPCA). The project aims to restore biodiversity values on private land surrounding the adjacent publicly-owned Tangihua Forest and to enhance community-led conservation efforts there. The CPCA will also work alongside a separate community-led Tangihua Forest Restoration Project. Northland Regional Council will meet roughly half of the overall $120,000-plus costs of the CPCA over the next five years; the remainder comes from the landowners involved and other funders. Possums, wild pigs and cats, rats and mice and mustelids, as well as wild ginger and kauri dieback disease will all be targeted using a variety of controls.

The Tangihua Forest range includes public conservation land administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC), with private land around its periphery. The range is also home to the Tangihua Lions Lodge outdoor education centre and council will be working with – and have the support of – both DOC (which will assist with technical advice) and the Lions Club. The project aims to dramatically cut animal and plant pests, and then keep their numbers low to enable native flora and fauna to recover.

Two decades on the air

Art in a day

u by Joanna Manson

u by Anna Harding

It’s 20 years since Dargaville’s community radio station went on air for the first time on February 14, 1997.

Local artist Pauline Gough took part in a one-day competition called ‘art in a day’ in Auckland, in which artists had nine hours to create an artwork that reflected the unique character of the historic suburbs Parnell, Grafton and Newmarket.

p Big River FM 2017 interns — Trey Thomson and Annika Matheis

As one of the longest surviving community radio stations in the country, volunteer and current station manager Anaru Tana has seen Big River FM evolve in its own shape and form. “It’s been a massive learning curve over the years,” he said. “In order to survive we’ve had to be fresh and innovative in our thinking. It’s about being prepared to make the changes while keeping the fundamentals intact.” He hopes the station will remain for many more years and is always on the lookout for young members of the community with new ideas to be involved. “We stream 24/7 on the internet and some shows have dedicated listeners from all over the world. We’re always keen for new members to get involved and take the station forward in the future,” said Anaru. Big River FM was founded by a group of individuals, who with more passion than experience, went about bringing sound waves to Dargaville that was

alternative to commercial radio. One of those was Phil Godfrey who is also patron of the station and an original founding member. “A lot of us thought Dargaville should have a radio station that was more representative of the community. We have never ceased after we started in Parenga Street then shifted to the current site in 2000. “I was there from the first week — it was Valentine’s Day and everything went fairly smoothly. In the early days we had at least 50 volunteers involved with the fundraising and running of the office.” Since 2010 the station has taken on a number of New Zealand Radio School interns each year, some of whom have gone on to have successful radio careers. Big River FM will celebrate their milestone birthday on Labour Weekend this year and plan to involve local businesses and station volunteers, past and present, in the celebrations. ¢

Pauline was drawn to the Parnell Rose Gardens as there were “lovely views everywhere you look and it was easy from a technical point of view, with parking and setting up.” Pauline’s work often involves vibrant colours, so the roses seemed an obvious choice for her. While painting, which she started at 8am, “there were a few people looking, but they were all very respectful and let me get on with it.” She didn’t find the nine hour deadline that bad. “I had a friend come and meet me and she took me out for lunch actually, at about 1pm. I had pretty much finished the painting before then but I did a few small things to it when I got back from lunch.” Her final piece was an impressionist style painting using oils, which was a new thing for Pauline, as her normal acrylics would have dried too quickly in the outside air.  ¢

Welcome to Wellsford Helping others in need u by Ann Morgan

Tina O’Leary came up with the idea to start a Koha Shed in Wellsford after seeing the donated goods concept on TV and deciding that it was something she would like to do for the local community. “A Koha Shed is supported by donations of clothing, food and household items for those in need, and people can receive things for a gold coin donation with the proceeds being used to help others with petrol vouchers or food,” said Tina. “I wanted to give back to the community, as our family have received help in the past when times were tough, but I didn’t know how to until I saw this idea. My friends Gloria Walker and Alita Gerrard have come onboard to help as well. “My mum Milly runs the Kaiwaka St John Op Shop and she told me to try it and see what I could accomplish.” Tina says due to life circumstances she had to go to the Salvation Army and other organisations for clothing and food at times in the past.

“When we needed help we had to drive to Whangarei or Auckland and that can be difficult. I felt we need something more accessible to work alongside the things that are here,” said Tina. “People may need petrol to get to hospital appointments or food and clothing. We plan to work in conjunction with other organisations in the local areas such as budgeting services and St John.” The Koha Shed has clothes, kitchenware and small items and they are looking for more towels, blankets and sheets to be donated. “We would like to start holding events such as budgeting advice and other social activities, where people can interact and learn life skills and help the elderly who may need gardening help or errands run.

Wearable Arts Extravaganza

11

A growing group of local people and the Dargaville Arts Association (performing arts section), with assistance from Dargaville Community Development Board are picking up the challenge to organise and stage a Wearable Arts show in Dargaville on the 15th and 16h of September this year. Paparoa has staged this highly successful event in the past but the decision has been made to no longer hold the show, so the opportunity for Dargaville to stage the event has been enthusiastically accepted. “The vision is for an evening of creativity, imagination, talent and entertainment over two nights that has not been seen before in our town,” said one of the promoters and organisers of the ambitious show, Cheryl Carmichael. “Entrants (male and female) have previously come from all over the Kaipara and other parts of Northland so we are hoping for the same enthusiasm, talent and range of areas to be represented. It is an enormous undertaking to stage this show successfully, involving many volunteers, community groups, businesses and schools. “There will be specific recognition of school entries (Year 6 up) with a first and second prize just for students.” The show will be held on a Friday and a Saturday night so the opportunities for local businesses are extensive. “For example, accommodation providers could put together and advertise some sort of weekend deal. Our area has so much to offer visitors

and this event will attract people from many areas,” Ms Carmichael said. “More information on this huge opportunity will be regularly published in the Kaipara Lifestyler. “There will be a get-together of all entrants in June or July so the organisers can work out the order of the parade on the night.” Registration forms will be available from Muddy Waters Gallery in Hokianga Road and the Kaipara Lifestyler offices in River Road, from March 1. We will be seeking sponsorship from local businesses and groups for trophies and prizes as the planning progresses. Anyone interested in donating prizes or sponsorship, or anyone with an interest or skills in the wearable arts, please email dargaville@wearablearts. nz. Everyone is encouraged and invited to enter or attend. We are positive of receiving enough entries for this major event to take place but that’s up to you, the people. Being the first wearable arts show staged in Dargaville. The expectation is for this to become an annual event for our town, that brings people from near and far and grows more each year. ¢

Helen Cairns who runs the Good Life Soap shop on Dargaville’s Victoria Street is looking forward to showcasing some of her new products at this year’s field days on March 2, 3 and 4. “We will of course be taking plenty of our hand made goat’s milk soap to the field days along with some new products,” she said. The popular Good Life goat’s milk soap is made with the help of their own boutique herd, which are milked twice a day by hand and gives the soap a rich and silky element. This year the Good Life Soap site will focus on displaying their growing range of natural hair treatments. “Our range of hair treatments has increased this year and now includes shampoo bars, herbal shampoo, hair tea and apple cider herbal hair rinse.” Helen says the products are particularly good for people who don’t like using shampoo every day, including the gents. “Our gentlemen’s grooming products are always very popular and we will have a range of razors, brushes, shaving

soap, beard oil and hair pomade. That’s not to mention other goodies like our hemp and aloe moisturiser, flower milk, lip balms and bath bombs,” she said. Good Life often hits the road as they know their customers like to ‘smell before you buy’. While Helen runs her shop out of her Victoria Street premises in Dargaville,

Study grants on offer u by Anna Harding

Every year the Northland Field Days Committee offer Northland agricultural students a study grant, and applications are now open. Application forms can be found at northlandfielddays.co.nz. “The Northland Field Days always tries to encourage young people to get into the agriculture industry. Many are unable to due to the costs involved in studying so the Northland Field Days offers this grant to assist with some of the costs,” said event administrator Meagan Edmonds. The only requirements for applicants are that they must be from Northland, be registered at any recognised tertiary provider, and are studying agricultural, horticultural, silvicultural or environmental-based courses. Past winners have used the funds for anything from materials to course fees. The committee “hopes it will enable our young Northland students to make the most of their future opportunities, and we truly enjoy following the progress and success of each of our grant recipients.” Last year there were three winners, all with Kaipara ties. Bree Martinac who grew up in Ruawai is at Massey University in Palmerston

North and in her last year of a Bachelor of Agricommerce with a major in food marketing and retail, and a minor in horticulture. “The financial assistance was great and it’s great having that support. Farming is in my blood so I didn’t really consider anything other than agriculture — it’s just a great way to spend three years, studying to get all that other knowledge, support and networking with people in the industry,” said Bree. Kieran McCahon from Pouto who studies a Bachelor of Agriscience at Massey in Palmerston as well, and Tommy Stevenson from Tangowahine who studies agriculture at Smedley Station, also received grants last year. There are no set amount of winners as “it really depends on the applications received,” said Meagan. Each individual grant will be up to $2,000 with a total agricultural grant pool of $10,000. The committee will determine the amounts of the grants to be allocated on a per case application. ¢

River raft races return Women celebrating women u by Anna Harding

u by Ann Morgan

The annual Northern Wairoa Boating Club races are set to take place on Saturday March 11. This year there are raft, kayak and seagull outboarding categories.

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai celebrate a woman in the community every year, that has been involved in volunteer work advancing the status of women in the local area, in conjunction with International Women’s Day.

p The 2016 Edgar Bradley Memorial Trophy winners

The raft race has been going since 1973 and many businesses, community groups and other groups have competed through the years. The big prize is the Edgar Bradley Memorial Trophy with $200 for coming first in the raft race and $100 for second. The kayak race first prize is $50 and there will also be ‘most creative’ and other novelty prizes up to $100, plus spot prizes. These races start at the sand barge landing on River Road and after heading for the bridge they return and end up at the boating club slipway. The Seagull outboard race will start from the Ruawai boat ramp and finish at the boating club wharf. “We are all here, but very few use the river, so here’s a safe day to get on

the river and enjoy yourself, be creative and get the kids on the river,” said coorganiser Warwick Savage. Entry for the raft race is $5 a head, plus $15 a raft and $2 a kayak. For the Seagull outboard race, entry is $10 a boat (up to 2 people), $5 an extra person. There are strict rules for all categories so be sure to contact the club for a more detailed list. Craft scrutineering for rafts and kayaks starts at 11am with races starting at 12.15pm. The Seagull outboard scrutineering starts at 10am, with the race starting high tide at 11am. Entry forms and rules are available from the Northern Wairoa boating club rooms, Dargaville Diesel, the club’s website or email nwboatingclub@gmail.com. ¢

‘Maungie mugs hit the shelves u by Joanna Manson

First there was the reusable ‘maungie bag’ and now cafes in Maungaturoto will stock the ‘maungie mug’ as part of a community sustainability initiative. Maungaturoto Residents Association president Terri Donaldson says the mug idea came about after looking at reducing community waste. “We would love to get rid of single use plastic bags. People embraced the ‘maungie bags, I’ve seen them pop up in Auckland and Whangarei. “We thought the next step from here would be the reusable mug. Apparently one million of those plastic cups go into landfill every minute.” The mugs are ceramic with a silicone lid and feature a Maungaturoto design by Moore Fine Arts and they are also dishwasher safe. “If you sit in a cafe everyday you p realise every single person uses a takeaway cup so now there will be an option of a quality reusable mug they can use.” Terri is keen to see how the mugs sell before brainstorming her next sustainable living project with the residents’ association. “People are ready for stuff to be a bit greener. We’re

trying to prove that no matter how small your town is you can still make a difference.” The ‘maungie mugs’ are for sale in Maungaturoto cafes this week for $12. All proceeds go to the residents’ association.  ¢

A smooth transition to better farming u by Andy Bryenton

When tractor manufacturer Deutz Fahr invited leading farm machinery experts to their Dresden facility last July for a new tractor launch, the first thing which caught their attention was the styling of the new 6 Series. Soon enough though, it was what hides under the aggressively styled bonnet which stole the show. That’s because while the 6 Series Deutz Fahr looks like it means business, with its supercar-inspired creases and angles, it’s the all-new powerplant and transmission at the heart of the beast which fulfil that promise. In fact, finding a smoother, more versatile transmission system and engine pairing in a tractor of this size may just prove an impossible task. The 6 Series sits in that comfortable niche below the biggest tractors in the field and above the small ‘secondary’ machine that fulfils a farm’s more menial tasks. With every model in the range bracketed between 145 and 200 horsepower, this is a tractor for the most demanding general applications, and the new 6-litre turbo-diesel engine under that sloping bonnet delivers better economy as well as ample power. Built to meet the fourth and ultimate tier of tough Euro emissions standards, that means

less fuel and AdBlue go in to extract the maximum results in the field. Even when traversing on-road, the 6 Series can maintain an eco-friendly 50km/h at just on 1,447 revs. There’s clever engineering in the new axle system too, for added stability and ride comfort, even with a big implement attached. But the star of the new 6 Series lineup is the link between that axle system (and those huge, terrain-mastering tyres) and the engine. The new RC Shift transmission builds on the success of previous Deutz Fahr transmission technology to create a new level of smooth operation. Fully automatic on demand, this unit surpasses the crude term ‘gearbox’, offering five operational ranges with six powershifts in each. With no less than seventeen gears in the main working speed range and a battery of reverse options to boot, fine tuning power delivery has never been

easier or more precise. The six-speed dual-clutch in your road car will seem positively prehistoric by comparison! Add in better comfort, visibility and an easy to maintain cooling system and

this is one green machine that’s set to make an impact in New Zealand, similar to the one it made in Dresden. Power Farming will debut the 6 Series RC Shift at Northland Field Days this March. ¢

Old school house on the move

25

u by Joanna Manson

The old Tara Road school house has been moved to its final resting spot, the Mangawhai Pioneer Village. It now accompanies the old Mangawhai church and is the second building to be added to the pioneer site. Moving the historical schoolhouse took place during the early hours of February 14, and it’s the fifth move for the building within the community. Chair of the Mangawhai Community Park and pioneer village, Jim Wintle, said there were “many happy faces” when people saw the building had been relocated to its new spot. Mr Wintle has been working alongside other trustees to secure the rights to historical buildings in the area for the last two years. He said the Tara Road schoolhouse and its past

relocation movements made it an interesting building. “Ken and Gayle Brown did a lot of restoration of the schoolhouse — I believe it’s one of the oldest buildings in the district, built around 1870,” he said. Mr Wintle says he thinks the building will remain set-up as a schoolhouse and will be used for educational purposes in conjunction with the nearby museum. He is looking forward to the completion of the pioneer village which he hopes will happen at some stage later this year. The Te Arai Library building and the old Mangawhai Post Office will be added to the site in the coming weeks. ¢
