Toheroa poaching a serious concern u by Jill Dickie

Very robust and frank discussions were shared between around 50 people from the Northern Wairoa and Kaipara areas and two MPI Fisheries Northland representatives, on February 18 at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club, regarding illegal toheroa poaching from Ripiro Beach. Among them were several Northern Wairoa marae representatives, who expressed a passionate plea for unity and ownership of the issue by everyone at the meeting, and all people who use the beach, to protect this resource. “The marae of the Northern Wairoa are united in their support of stamping out poaching and illegal collecting of toheroa,” said Kaumatua of Naumai Marae, Tokotoko Retimana. The issuing of customary permits was raised as there is only one kaitiaki from the area issuing locally and concern was expressed about permits being issued from outside the local area. In response, chief compliance officer MPI Fisheries Northland, Phil Tasker, explained from their experience and patrols permits were not the main issue. “It is the overall increase in the amount of poaching incidents and the calls to the 0800 number that has raised alarm bells.” Further discussion was directed on the urgent need for more Honorary Fisheries Officers and Observers. On the job training is provided for the voluntary roles and mileage is reimbursed. “It is unfair for the public to assume and expect retired people to fill voluntary roles. “As the marae representatives explained this is an issue we all need to unite over and take ownership to stop poaching of toheroa,” said Baylys Beach Society chair, Cheryl Carmichael.

p The seriousness of toheroa poaching at Ripiro Beach was addressed at a recent meeting between locals and MPI Fisheries Officers, Phil Tasker and Marcie Cooke

For further information on becoming an officer or observer email marcie. cooke@mpi.govt.nz. The two MPI representatives advised of several current prosecutions in the courts from Ripiro Beach and strongly urged the public to immediately call 0800 476 224 to report any toheroa taking, and email any evidence to ncc@mpi.govt.nz.

“Our 0800 number is like a Fisheries 111. If we are not informed as it’s happening we have no chance of getting there. We are patrolling over this way perhaps more than the public realises,” said Phil Tasker. MPI Fisheries Northland have now agreed to increase their patrols on Ripiro Beach.

p A group from Dargaville Kindergarten strolled along the beach between Baylys and Chases Gorge recently, donned with gloves and collections bags, picking up treasures and debris as a part of their learning about the environment. The 40 children, 20 helpers and five teachers unsurprisingly collected mainly plastics, as well as other items such as cigarette butts, styrofoam, bottle tops and synthetic rope. “With national Sea Week looming the beach trip was well timed to provide meaningful teaching and learning experiences for the tamariki in the coming weeks,” said teacher, Jenny Huriwai. Pictured are parent helper, Joseph Shelford, with son Deja and friend Toby Parkinson.

Cyclists to boost tourism Heritage trail opens

The government’s $4.95 million grant to upgrade Kaipara Harbour facilities has the unreserved support of a major harbour cruise operator currently ferrying tourists from Helensville to Pahi and Dargaville.

The Butter, Barques and Gum Trail was officially opened last Sunday by Kaipara Mayor, Dr Jason Smith with a ribbon-cutting ceremony next to the gum diggers statue in Hokianga Road, attended by around 50 people.

Kewpie Too owner, Terry Somers, operates Kaipara Cruises and says he’s also been busy ferrying cycle trail riders from Pouto to Helensville, with many more to come. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the grant, saying “we explore upgrading Kaipara wharves and water transport helping the district leverage more benefits from the Kaipara Harbour, the biggest in New Zealand.” “Any wharf upgrade is good,” said Captain Somers. “And a wharf at Pouto in particular with increasing tourist traffic. ONE BILLION TREES AND NORTHLAND

You will have heard about the One Billion Trees government program that was launched November last year, with the aspiration to plant one billion trees by 2027. It is focused on planting the right trees in the right place, to ensure that there will be improved environmental, economic, social and cultural outcomes for all New Zealanders. There are two ways for land owners to apply for funding. Direct funding grants and partnership arrangements. Land holdings have to be greater than 1ha for indigenous species and 5ha for other species. Land owners are advised to initially contact the NRC land team with their expression of interest. NRC will then provide the advice needed to generate an application. More information is available on the MPI website. This is a great opportunity to get trees in the ground with ongoing funding and support to help with tree survival.

TE PAE TAWHITI — OUR VISION — 2018 TO 2048

Now that the Long-Term Plan has been finalised NRC have produced an easy to read document that explains our longterm vision. It showcases the work that is planned over the next ten and twenty years. Within the NRC vision of Our Northland Together We Thrive each area of focus is explained and given time-frames for completion. There are copies available on line or at the KDC information desk in Dargaville. Your feedback on this important document would be very welcome.

NORTHLAND FIELD DAYS 28th FEBRUARY TO 2nd MARCH 2019

Funding campaign launched

MX championships underway

u by Jill Dickie

The roar of engines, exhaust fumes and flying dirt are the order of the day, and Moto X riders from across the country have been Kaipara bound for the first two days of the Northland MX championships. Round two gets underway at Maungaturoto on Sunday, March 3.

Artists, residents, visitors and officials congregated at Bennetts Cafe on Saturday, February 23, for the official launch of the Mangawhai Artists Inc crowdfunding campaign to raise money for a dedicated workspace. Kaipara District mayor, Dr Jason Smith, and general manager for Creative Northland, Hinurewa te Hau, supported the local artists in opening their PledgeMe campaign, which has already generated pledges totalling $14,715 at time of print. The building project will provide a larger working area for artists at the local gallery and organisers have an initial target amount of $100,000 to raise in the next five weeks — before March 31. “Mangawhai Artists Gallery is known for its quality exhibitions but is too small to have workshops and classes at the same time as exhibitions and we receive lots of requests for more art opportunities,” said spokesperson Lynn Middleton. People able to help can donate and receive a charitable receipt or pledge Maungaturoto Storage containers

online in return for a reward. In this, all or nothing campaign the group must meet their target or the pledges are not collected and the building will not proceed. Pledging a block for the building is one way, residents can be rewarded for their generosity. The block they buy will become a part of the actual building and a name plaque attached to it. In addition, two windows and one set of double doors, also named, may be pledged. Other rewards include books, workshops, artworks, gift packs, a box of pastels and gift vouchers. “It is important for people to know that the art workspace and the artists’ gallery are community-owned so achieving this will benefit our community now and in the future,” said Mangawhai Artists Inc chair, Mary-Anne Boyd. “This is a four-race series, which began at the Dargaville Motorcycle club on Sunday, February 17 where they achieved a whopping 212 riders,” said Maungaturoto MX Club spokesperson, Shannon Patterson. “Maungaturoto is a volunteer-run club and without the support of local farmers, business and helpers we would not exist. “We are privileged to be a part of this year’s Penrite Oils Northland MX Champs. The second round will be held at Maungaturoto followed by round three at Whangarei on March 17 and round four at Rodney on March 31.” Riders battle it out across the four race two days to accumulate the most

points and hopefully earn a podium finish. “We will have two tracks running for the event — a mini track hosting kids from as young as four years of age, and the main track 65cc bikes right up to veteran riders. The Lions Club will be fundraising with food on-site. “Location is Bickerstaffe Rd Maungaturoto. Riders’ briefing is at 9am with practice followed by racing, which will last the day — hopefully, the riders will too!” said Shannon. Gate entry is free for spectators — no dogs allowed. Fundraising proceeds apace The plight of the tern u by Paul Campbell

u by Jill Dickie

With more than $300,000 raised in a series of events in support of the dementia unit extension to the Riverview Rest Home at Maungaturoto, there’s no let up in seeking a target of $500,000 on the part of the town’s charitable trust fundraising committee.

Following one of its worst breeding seasons with just two chicks fledged, the New Zealand fairy tern population at Mangawhai is in dire straights according to conservationists, in spite of thousands of dollars about to be spent on genetic research.

p Top NZ Irish band, the McSweeney Brothers will appear in concert with fiddler Marion Burns on March 2

“From sales at The Den in Bickerstaffe Road of a wide variety of donated goods and household stuff, from burger sales by the Rapid Relief Team, to sports events, family fun days and just hugely appreciated donations the community support is great,” said trust chair, Craig Fergus. “Our most recent donation was $5,000 from the LW Nelson Foundation.“ On Saturday, March 2 New Zealand’s top Irish band, the McSweeney Brothers appear in concert with fiddler Marion Burns at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall with proceeds going to the dementia fund. “Tickets are $35, and there’ll be a cash bar as well as continuous supper,”

said organiser, Alex Tetzner. “We hope to pre-sell this event and tickets are available from Ray White in town, or from me at 09 431 6434.” Next on the fundraising list will be a nine-hole Ambrose golf tournament on March 9 at the Paparoa Golf Club on Golden Stairs Road. The 14-bed dementia unit at Riverview is to cost $3.6 million. To date, $654,000 has been spent on planning, resource and building consents and the trust has organised a bank facility of $1.8 million. The fundraising committee is seeking $500,000 from the wider Kaipara community with grants sought for the balance of $400,000. ¢

Historically, the Te Arai Stream mouth has been a nesting site for the fairy tern and an important postbreeding flocking area due to the reliable source of food, but there is a suggestion that decisions made by the Tara Iti Golf Club course developer, Te Arai North Ltd, may have an impact on the birds. A long-term row between Auckland Council and Te Arai North Ltd over a ford or dam in the Te Arai Stream may be potentially disrupting the life cycle of fish which are crucial to the survival of the fairy tern. The stream passes through land destined to become a regional park and the birds are known to flock at the stream mouth. Meanwhile, the Te Arai and Mangawhai Shorebirds’ Trust is to fund genetic research to investigate possible factors in the birds’ decline. In an interview with Radio NZ, trustee Peter Wilson said there appears to be a number of infertile males. Another scientist studying the fairy terns at Mangawhai, Karen Baird, suspects recent mangrove clearances have diminished the food supply

p A fairy tern chick hatched at Pakiri Beach in December 2018 was one of only two chicks to fledge during the summer season Photo credit Laura Patience, DOC Ranger

and may have affected the number of eggs laid. In another interview, Tony Beauchamp, DOC’s science adviser, told Radio NZ the main reason for the poor breeding season was the weather. “With five major storms in a row, the birds didn’t renest. Most of the fairy tern losses are due to storms and weather conditions.” As the birds are critically endangered significant efforts are being given by several groups to ensure their future survival. For more information, a fairy tern exhibition is open at Mangawhai Museum until July 2019. ¢

Grave restoration project

In a new initiative led by former Army Major Simon Strombom of Titahi Bay RSA, a project to restore many of New Zealand’s veterans’ graves has begun under the name of New Zealand Remembrance Army. The group have a target to complete the task by December 2020 and have amassed a volunteer force from individuals, several military groups, schools and cadets. They invite interested people in the Kaipara to join in to care for local graves. In public cemeteries, families have much of the responsibility for maintaining these graves, and many have fallen into disrepair, so the New Zealand Returned Servicemen’s Association is playing a significant role in developing a cleaning and restoration guide for anyone wanting to assist. Visiting a veteran’s grave in Porirua, Strombom was surprised at the poor condition it was in and instigated a restoration project at the cemetery. With local mayoral assistance, his team turned the graves into some of the best presented in New Zealand. “Since starting the Remembrance Army in January, we already have more than 3,000 people helping across 31 regions nationwide,” said Strombom. “So many people stand at remembrance day to respect servicemen but don’t consider looking after their graves. You can’t just do it for one day.” Strombom has had success in many cemeteries, but in others, has

encountered local body issues with some councils considering the group are breaching health and safety bylaws. “This is about people’s core values, not about bureaucratic processes,” said Strombom. “It’s about respecting these men and women and preserving military history.” The Kaipara District Council state it has no issue or regulations concerning people cleaning or repairing the graves of soldiers. Local rugby inspiration

Three artists, three journeys

Keen Dargaville sportsman, Potolaka Ma’ake, began playing rugby while at high school and in spite of injury he has bounced back and is currently playing for the Tonga Sevens team with hopes of a future rugby contract.

An artistic trio combined to show their work in their first public display in a new exhibition opened at the Mangawhai Artists gallery on February 21 — an exciting milestone in their artistic lives.

While playing for the Northland Sevens team at the 2018 nationals, Poto was spotted and picked up for the Tongan team, and plans to stick with the team in future qualifying rounds. Describing his experience with the team he said, ”It’s exciting, nerve-wracking and an honour to represent my country.” Poto was brought up in Dargaville and says he always enjoyed being around sports and watching rugby, so picked up the game while at Dargaville High School. Teacher, Christine Taylor, said he was a student that stood out. “I was involved in his rugby mainly as manager p Potolaka Ma’ake with a teammate, Taniela Samita, in their Tonga Sevens uniform of the 1st XIII league team and helped with the 1st XV team.” In his last year at school — year keep motivated, which keeps him in 13 — he injured his anterior cruciate good shape considering he enjoys any ligament on his knee, which required food and doesn’t keep to a specific diet. surgery, but with determination and He is currently coaching the Dargaville the support of the DHS sport and PE High School 1st XIII and has hopes he department, he has made a full recovery. will attract a contract with either sevens Poto says he finds it easy to train and or any rugby code. ¢

Historic church at risk

11

u by Jill Dickie

Hukatere and Tinopai residents are extremely concerned they may lose their historic church, St Michael’s on the Hill, due to talk of it being relocated to the pioneer village at Mangawhai. The church was constructed in 1861 in Hakaru, serving as church, schoolroom and church hall until 1939, when it was moved in sections to Hukatere and renamed. The local Hamlin family have strong personal connections to the church. “My father helped move it, and my parents were the first people married there,” said Max Hamlin, who also said he would like to see it looked after, whether at the current site or a new one. The church’s neighbour, John Eddy, has been involved in recent meetings to discuss the potential relocation and said many people in the local area do not want it disturbed. “If the Anglicans no longer want it, they should donate it to the local people.” The general feeling from local people is to leave the iconic church where it stands as a piece of local heritage and investigate setting up a trust to ensure it is regularly maintained. The church, however, is owned by the Auckland Anglican Diocese who have

had a real estate appraisal completed on the land but say they have not made any final decision on the outcome. “We acknowledge that the building was brought from another site at Hakaru many years ago and we have been seeking the possibility of another site for it to continue as a place of worship. The property is not on the market; that would be a matter of last resort for us,” said Bishop Jim, from the Diocese. According to a committee member on the Mangawhai Pioneer Village Trust, Jim Wintle, the church was offered to the Anglican people in the Hakaru area. They may gift it to the village, where it would be accommodated and prepared for a future purpose, earning its costs like the other buildings there. Situated at 703c Tinopai Road, the church is registered as a category two building with Heritage New Zealand and is also scheduled under the Kaipara District Plan as a category A structure meaning it will need resource consent from the council to move it. ¢

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora, Three weeks ago the announcement of a $27.2m ‘kickstart’ package for Kaipara District was made at a packed Otamatea Marae near Maungaturoto. It was a shining day for Kaipara – along with the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, there were more Cabinet Ministers, MPs and local body politicians present than you could shake a stick at, along with kaumatua and kuia from across the North joining Te Uri o Hau and many locals in the celebrations. The centre of the celebration was the $20m grant for Kaipara roads. This will include works on sealing Pouto Road and Waipoua River Road, upgrading to two-lanes the Hakaru bridge between Kaiwaka and Mangawhai and fixing other bridges. Significantly, $8.1m was prioritised for metalling and improving Kaipara’s 1100km unsealed road network. Don’t expect to see metal roads being tarsealed - EVERYONE is asking for that but instead expect steady improvements across the entire network. What would have taken many years of ratepayer funding to achieve is now being fasttracked, which puts us on a better footing to make even greater improvements sooner. Lots of people are interested to know what’s in store as we start dealing with years of under-investment in our roads. The KDC roading team will be doing specific communications about the work programme going forward and what we can all expect to see happening where and when. Thanks for your patience with this. We’re on our way. Adding further value to what we already do well, we’ll also be working with the

community over coming months on projects for developing our Kaipara wharf network and for Growing the Kai in Kaipara. These are the other two parts of the $27.2m Kaipara Kickstart package recently announced. Based on the roading work, all three fit neatly together. Stand by for more information here. While you’re waiting you might want to join The People’s Panel between now and end of Feb when council will be asking everyone on the panel about wheelie bins for Kaipara. Are you in? Go to www.kaipara. govt.nz/panel to have your say. Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for electing me one year ago to serve as Mayor of Kaipara District. It’s been a mighty first year, filled with many colourful events, times and colourful Kaipara characters, and I’m enjoying getting on with the job. The $27.2m grant for the roads, wharves and kai projects is a great kickstart to take us all to the next level. Let’s go! Nga mihi nui,

Jason

P.S. After the Government gave us the $27.2m, I personally thanked the Prime Minister by giving her a brown paper bag of new season kumara, freshly dug! She was grateful, said they’re a family favourite and we shared a laugh. A perfectly Kaipara thing to do.

Positive parenting programme u by Jill Dickie

Developing children into thinking, positive and confident little people is the focus of the Incredible Years parenting programme, and local mums and dads are invited to register for the next intakes beginning in early March at the Early Years Hub in Dargaville. Supported by the Ministry of Education, the free programme involves 14 three-hour sessions with a parent taking one child each week for both to learn effective, trialled and tested ways of developing positive interactions with each other. “The programme was originally designed for children with challenging behaviours, but we have found the strategies work for all children,” said facilitator Kim Hill. “Parents learn to develop ways to deal with any problems that may arise in the future.” The sessions include time for parents to share what has and hasn’t worked for them in a safe and confidential environment and to receive support from the facilitators. They can practise positive parenting skills through practical exercises and homework tasks, ensuring children understand such things as appropriate behaviours, cooperating with others and learning to problem solve. As space for only 20 parents is available facilitators recommend registering as soon as possible up to Tuesday, March 5. The first session will

begin on Wednesday, March 6, from 5.30pm to 8.00pm and the second session Thursday, March 7, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. A further intake will start in August. To register phone Lynette Matthews 09 439 7861 or Apikara FerrisBretherton 021 292 1814. ¢

Tree removal annoys

Diggin’ Deep wins race

u by Jill Dickie

Derek Godfrey and his son Jackson won the Northern Wairoa Raft Race on Saturday 23, in their home built raft Diggin’ Deep, fending off opposition from just one other. They plan to share their $1,000 winnings with the local Scout group.

A small section of ground has been cleared of several trees at Sportsville Dargaville to make way for an extra car parking area, but the work has caused angst for a neighbour.

p Trees have been removed from the tennis court area at Sportsville Dargaville to make way for car parking

Resident Dennis Jones was disappointed and angered to see a large magnolia tree uprooted along with established native shrubs. “From an ecological point of view it’s crazy, and now the shade and wind shelter is gone from the tennis courts,” said Jones. “I thought Dargaville was going ahead, but they’ve turned the clock back doing things like this.” After a conversation between Jones and the Kaipara District Council parks manager, it was agreed some trees could be left on his boundary. “We don’t require an undertaking of public consultation on clean up or tidy up jobs of trees,” said

council spokesperson, Ben Hope. “Should we be looking to remove a large stand of natives, or repurpose a reserve or park, then we would look to engage the community and neighbouring properties.” “In respect of Northern Wairoa Memorial Park, we undertook some clearance of a mixture of some natives but also tobacco weed and vines, to clear room for the car park formation.” Residents should relate their concerns to the Kaipara District Council by phoning 0800 727 059 or visit kaipara.govt.nz and click on ‘contact us’ then ‘report a problem’. ¢

p Raft race winners, Derek and Jackson Godfrey, with their trophy

Derek said the hardest part of the three-day exercise in putting the raft together was obtaining the small drums. “It’s one of the most comprehensive things I’ve put together,” he said. Their raft was also constructed from lengths of bamboo and blue strapping tape. The Godfreys took their raft to Kai Iwi Lakes for a test run and also launched it on the Northern Wairoa River last Friday, trialling the use of the umbrella sails. In other entries, two kayakers took on the challenge, Martin Lorf in the senior class and Thomas Davidson in the junior. Six vessels took part in the

outboard class with the winning boat Salty Dog taking home another prize of $1,000. According to Commodore of the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, Janice Cleaver, the conditions were great on the water with not much wind, and spectators on the banks enjoyed the spectacle. Visitors and competitors enjoyed refreshments and the prizegiving in the boating clubrooms afterwards. Cleaver said she hopes for more entries next year and encourages people to start planning early. ¢

Service line safety

See you at Dargaville Field Days

While this privately owned power pole looks fine from the outside, it wasn’t until an Oakura resident reversed her car into it - piercing the wood with her tow-ball - that she became aware of just how rotten and dangerous it was.

Come along to the Dargaville Fieldays, Northpower will be at site number 218. We will be featuring the evolution of energy and communication – from back in the day when our energy and communication needs were quite basic through to today, and how we have changed and evolved over time. We will have tasty treats on site and helpful information about your service lines.

Old and poorly maintained lines, and those close to trees, are likely to be damaged in bad weather, causing power loss to your home or business and creating a safety or fire hazard. You are responsible for the safety and maintenance of your service line.

Exploring the field days

Oi!

u by Ann van Engelen

It is that time of year again when the Northland Field Days committee is in full swing getting the grounds into pristine condition for the biggest three-day outdoor event in Northland. There are many changes from last year’s event starting with lots of new foodies throughout the three different food courts to tempt everybody’s taste buds. There will be great coffee available, and we are excited about the huge variety of food this year, which includes along with the staple hot dogs, hot chips and cold drinks — Mexican food, Fijian curries, slow roasted pulled pork, gourmet schnitzel, sandwiches, hangi, raw fish and Mediterranean wraps. Check out our site map to see where the different food areas are. The Clydesdale horses are back, complete with the wagon and this is a very popular way to give your feet a rest whilst travelling around the field days circuit. The sheep dog trials have moved to a more central spot so visitors can be close to the action — across the road from the Stronghold Cutting Horses, which is always incredible to watch and a crowd favourite. The children’s entertainment area has the blow up bouncy castles and other rides along with a very active market area where you can find bargains and quality market goods, whilst the Lifestyle Pavilions are under cover and a great place to get out of the weather and see

President’s welcome It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 35th Northland Field Days. Our dedicated bands of voluntary organisers, associate and community helpers along with our sole employee have worked hard during the last 12 months to bring another quality event for you all to enjoy at New Zealand’s friendliest field days. Despite a challenging year we have maintained, in line with our charitable trust status the commitment to invest in Northland’s agriculture future. We were pleased to again give financial support to Northland students with their tertiary education in 2018 as well as numerous other Northland organisations and clubs. WorkSafe ambassador and legendary All Black, Richard Loe will open the event at 11am on Thursday outside the Headquarters, and after two years in the making, our new office block is awaiting its official opening and will be named The Dave Phillips Memorial Headquarters. We see the field days as the perfect opportunity for town and country to unite, share and promote the wonderful lifestyle sectors New Zealand offers and to ensure solid foundation support for our primary industry by partnering with exhibitors offering technological supremacy, expertise and the best deals

BUSINESS PROFILE

Gaining traction this Field Days There’s a lot of power on display at this year’s Northland Field Days — from turbo diesel utes through to the latest passenger cars, sports cars, massive tractors and combine harvesters, and of course those off-roaders and quads to tackle tough terrain. conditions, which put tyres to the ultimate test. There will be ample opportunity to make a deal as Gas and Tyre return to the field days where in years past they have been voted the best outdoor site. Great deals on-site including our famous free steel wheel deal with any set of Mickey Thompson Tyres, plus buy three and get one free on a combination of agricultural products from Trelleborg, Mitas, BKT or Michelin range. With all this and more on offer, a stop by the Gas and Tyre stand is a must. The whole team invite you to pay them a visit, and check out the latest and greatest technology ‘getting power to the ground!’

When you really need your machines to work. When you have no use for downtime — then buy what the military and aviation industry has for years.

CorrosionX is Mission Critical

Simply the very best lubricant and maintenance product available. CorrosionX lubricates some three times better than good engine oil. It will keep connectors, switches, plugs, fuse boxes and instrumentation in mint condition and stop corrosion on impact. Only one litre of CorrosionX coats 94 square metres — with full efficiency at a four-micron thickness, it doesn’t attract dust! It’s tested to max 39.000-volt dielectric strength, so if your electrics and electronics struggle with water ingress or condensation gets your vacuum pump at the milking shed, or the starter solenoid plays up, a quick spray from the red can solve the problem. CorrosionX lasts for many months, never dries or evaporates making it cheaper in the long run than the kerosene-based products. CorrosionX is NZ MPI approved to

class C11, same as lanolin. The product is not flammable, does not affect rubber, neoprene, monofilament, plastics, anodising, varnish or paint. A litre fogged from a kero gun can mothball a maizer in 30 minutes — corrosion protection lasting until the next season. Its creamy brother CorrosionX Heavy Duty is the unsurpassed lubricant for three-point linkages, Teleflex cables, shed hinges, rotary milking platforms, leaf springs and lock bolts. CX Heavy Duty is the perfect long-term rust protection in rafters, chassis and machinery, an excellent assembly compound, preventing future oxidisation and electrolysis. Pork roll raising awareness

J A Forrest Ltd AgricuLturAL contrActing

u by Jill Dickie

A serious message is behind a fun food giveaway to visitors at the Northland Regional Council stand at the upcoming Northland Field Days, in a joint creation with Northtec students and their tutor. Kaipara Constituency councillor, Penny Smart, said that while the council appreciates wild pork is a valued source of free food for some Northlanders, feral pigs also pose potentially serious threats to the region potentially causing the spread of kauri dieback disease. “Pigs can be quite destructive, digging up the ground in bush and pasture areas while hunting for food. They opportunistically prey on ground-dwelling animals, including birds and their eggs and other natives including snails, lizards and frogs,” said Smart. In previous years the council has transformed a variety of pest animals, plants and even insects into an array of edible treats as a fun way to spark public interest in its broader work. Last year’s creative cooks provided a wattle seed-flavoured ice cream, and previous offerings included rabbit rissoles, burgers, pies and pate all made from possum, wild pork, venison and goat, rabbit sausages and even wasp larvae ice cream. This year’s combination of wild pork, watercress, kawakawa tea and ginger mayo will be served in a roll for visitors to enjoy as they watch the level four cookery students practising their skills with tutor Hughie Blues. NorthTec director development, Phil Alexander-Crawford, said it is good for

Creativity hits the runway u by Andy Bryenton

The annual Dargaville Wearable Arts extravaganza is coming soon. Last year’s show was a feast for the senses, with amazing artwork on display from a talented group of designers. This year promises to be even better, and plans are underway across the Kaipara and beyond for a new collection of visually stunning creations. The categories for 2019 have been streamlined and headed up with some bold inspirations — Our Natural Environment celebrates the biodiversity of the land, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle points the way to creative ideas for an ecologically sound future, and the Avant Garde category pushes the envelope of design and blurs the line between fashion and modern art. These categories serve as a jumping off point for the imagination — suggesting materials, colours, design cues and themes, which will shape the vision of the designers. Equally important are the many categories of prizes to be won, with two brand new awards being rolled out for the 2019 extravaganza. A prize for design and construction rewards those entrants

who engineer something amazing from the unexpected. There’s another new award for the stage presence of a single model, taking in how they breathe life into art with their personality. All up, there are fourteen prizes, including the coveted people’s choice award and the supreme winner. If you think you have what it takes to make your creation come alive for 2019, it’s time to start planning. Entries are open now and close on the June 14, or when 45 designers have accepted the challenge. Don’t delay — take the opportunity to make your imagination come to life. Wilding conifer Angling for a great deal impacting lake areas

BUSINESS PROFILE

Field days may be a festival of agriculture and farming, but there’s nothing our locals love more than enjoying the outdoors for leisure as well as productivity.

u by Jill Dickie

p Jason and Tony will be some of the Hunting and Fishing crew at the field days

Council biosecurity manager Don McKenzie says many of the wilding conifers are the descendants of escapees from commercial forestry plantations or shelterbelt plantings. They comprise several species such as cedar, pine, fir, spruce and larch. “We know from staff observations in the field and recent aerial imagery that wilding pines are having an increasing, and unwanted, impact on our coastal margins, dune lakes and rare gumland ecosystems. Not only do they colonise and change the existing environment, displacing native species, they can adversely impact on water tables.” He stresses the council is not aiming to blame or penalise commercial foresters or other landowners for the issue. “What we’re saying is right tree, right place, right purpose.” The regional council has restrictions regarding wilding pines along property boundaries but not broader controls for the trees in its Northland Regional

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT Field days dining fare u by Andy Bryenton

For three days this week, the town of Dargaville will gain an added population of visitors and exhibitors attending Northland’s biggest outdoor event of the year. The annual field days is a celebration of farming technology and innovations, with everything on display from gigantic combine harvesters to oldfashioned oilskins and gumboots. Moreover, it’s after the gates close each afternoon that a hungry crowd will set out in search of dinner. It is where both those who remain in town and those who hit the highway to head back home are spoiled for choice. There’s a reason that the agricultural tent city of field days springs up here in the west Kaipara — our local farms

produce some of the freshest produce, which means our local restaurants have plenty of local flavour on the menu. Of course, the iconic local vegetable is the kumara, grown here since ancient times and now the hub of a thriving

domestic and export trade. Visit local restaurants, and you’ll find the sweet tuber turned into everything from hot chips with sour cream and sweet chilli dip, all the way through to Thaistyle desserts with palm sugar and coconut cream. Another of our famous exports is prime beef, with award-winning Angus hailing from the green pastures of this corner of the world. The options for a sizzling sirloin, scotch fillet or a mighty T-bone are ample — a good old-fashioned steak meal is accomplished with style by our historic taverns, both here in Dargaville and along the highway through the harbour lands. The harbour itself is a source of

some of the freshest seafood in the world — this is, after all, the biggest harbour in the southern hemisphere, and it is stocked with everything from fat juicy scallops (perfect with cream sauce and crispy bacon) through to flounder and snapper. A traditional Kiwi takeout of fish and chips is made special with the addition of fish caught fresh that day from the waters, not a stone’s throw away. No matter what you choose — hot kebabs, spicy curries, zesty Thai noodles or a host of other delights — you’ll be experiencing what the field days is all about. Our farmers cultivate the land to bring us the food which sustains and entertains!  ¢

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT Change on the menu in Dargaville

DARGAVILLE CLUB

The sign of the Golden Lion on Hokianga road in Dargaville’s civic centre has been a fixture in the town for decades, and a popular location for those in search of a hot and tasty meal. With a new owner at the helm and a new menu all set to debut a few delicious surprises, the latest reinvention of this wellknown landmark keeps the best of the traditional — like fresh, hot, and hearty meals and reasonable prices — and adds some fresh spice. New manager Rona has assembled a whole new team to help her bring back the Golden Lion for 2019, and she’s spent a lot of time, thought and effort in coming up with a menu that covers a range of tastes and appetites. Picking out fresh ingredients to craft a range of traditional Kiwi-style Chinese take-out meals, you’ll find favourites like red pork char siu ribs, chow mein noodles with broccoli, cauliflower and marinated beef, creamy egg fu yong with garden veggies and chicken, or classic fried rice direct from the wok. Crunchy battered sweet and sour pork pieces come coated with a tangy sauce that leaves them moist on the inside but crispy outside. For those who want something filling and familiar, there’s big homemade burgers and hot chips as well — but that’s just the beginning. The new Golden Lion offers a selection of traditional Polynesian dishes on their menu as well. While these, like many of the other ‘blackboard specials’ change daily, those who have tried these recipes before will be pleased to see them on offer locally. Of particular mention is the tasty chop suey, which anyone who has dined with Polynesian family or friends may remember well. One treat not to miss is a helping of banana balls —

fried banana bread with a fluffy texture, shaped into bite-sized morsels. There are many more influences from the cuisine of the Pacific, which will come onto rotation as well. Hitting their stride at just the right time to greet a busy field days crowd is great timing for the new team at the Golden Lion. ¢ THE NEW

When only the toughest will do

27

u by Andy Bryenton

For the generation raised on computer technology, the initials HD might stand for high definition or hard drive. For those who work outdoors or with powerful tools, those two letters mean only one thing — Heavy Duty. It’s a bold claim to make, and manufacturers know that there are plenty of operators who will put anything with the HD brand to the test. That’s why Polaris has not messed around with half measures before putting together a Ranger side-by-side off-road vehicle, which they deem worthy of the name. The research and development team behind this advancement on the two-decades-old lineage of Ranger machines knew that those two letters were like ‘heavyweight’ on a boxer’s credentials — and an invitation to a world of punishment. The Ranger 570 HD was made to thrive in such conditions. They started with a frame that’s geometrically designed and then welded from steel to create a rigid and safe core, as well as a platform for stability. A close look at the Ranger 570 HD’s components — in the suspension system, for example — versus those of opposing machines reveals the kind of sturdy construction, which anticipates surviving years of hard knocks. As the

new Ranger will likely be deployed in steep, rocky or otherwise rugged terrain, this goes all the way down to the tyres and shocks, and all the way up to the cage roof. Added safety features such as hill descent mode and active engine braking make it easier to handle the rough stuff with full confidence. Which brings us to the heart of the Ranger 570HD — a powerful Polaris ProStar engine, mounted low down and in the middle of the frame for optimal weight distribution. Delivering 44 horsepower, this mill has been designed to be easy to maintain, but more than that, its ample power makes the Ranger move and handle in a way which belies that HD badge. Despite being tough and solidly constructed, a combination of torque on demand and efforts to lighten nonstructural components make the Ranger 570HD feel nimble and precise. It’s a combination, which large automakers find difficult to attain with full-sized SUVs, but which this workready off-roader pulls off effortlessly. ¢

p Heavy Duty means what it says when it comes to the tough construction of the new Polaris Ranger 570 HD

Utility with extra sport u by Andy Bryenton

Lamborghini is making a ‘crossover’ sports utility now. Aston Martin has one in the works. Bentley’s immense Bentayga and Rolls Royce’s even larger Cullinan are more stately edifice than car — symbols of ancient Babylonian levels of style and excess. Even Ferrari has a sports utility in the pipeline, despite rumours that the ghost of Enzo Ferrari may haunt those who have perpetrated such a transgression. Rumours by the purists that is. The question is, of course, whether it’s wise to purchase several hundreds of thousands of dollars of luxury, powerful SUV. Especially when the sports cars made by this list of venerable, respected, masterful companies represent the pinnacle of auto engineering, artistry, and speed. Is a super SUV, when it comes right down to it, a better investment than a Land Cruiser? When Lamborghini was founded in 1963 and began work on the devastatingly gorgeous Miura sports car, the Land Cruiser name was already nine years old. The current hard-as-nails, go-anywhere model has remained unchanged in style since 1984. It’s fought in wars.

It’s delivered aid in disasters. It’s crossed deserts and bashed through jungles. With a big 4.2 litre diesel, the J70 series has not just proven that it can do the business on a test track, but in some of the most hostile conditions in the world, while being shot at. For the school run or to tow the boat, then, it should definitely suffice. Toyota’s three-decade-old design is not shocking or new, and it’s not designed to blitz lap records, either. There is set to be a battle for the world’s fastest SUV as top sports car names pitch their hats into the ring, but in a way, that’s like being the ‘world’s strongest clown’ — astounding, but outside of the original design brief. If you want

It is with grateful thanks that I farewell the Customers of Elf Organics Health Store in Dargaville. It’s been almost 6 years since I set the shop up, with the intention of sharing and discussing useful health information with our Community, providing health products, and all manner of known and unknown health food ingredients. Over the 6 years I’ve seen many people embrace new ways of thinking, eating, and living. It has been a pleasure.

Elise, recipient

Now it is time for me to move on with more in depth sharing of knowledge through future workshops, finishing a book I started to write 10 years ago, and the continuation of my Natural Therapies/coaching business – Bright Life Natural Health. I’d love to be able to say the business has sold and you’d still have your health shop, unfortunately this is not the case, and so I’ve decided to move forward with my other plans regardless. Thank you so much for your support and in many cases, friendship. I have enjoyed the learning and growing alongside customers as we all strive for better health and well being. Love lots,
