p Weather conditions were ‘perfect’ at Kai Iwi Lakes for two Sport Northland triathlons held last Friday and Saturday according to organisers. Many top contenders from 2017 came back for the ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sports Association Triathlon on Friday, and the annual Avoca Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon on Saturday offered many different options including: a kids tri, short course, long course, teams, kayak or swim options. At the end of the day every competitor got to take home a bag of kumara in true Kaipara fashion.

Workload begins for new mayor u by Paul Campbell

The district can look forward to more regional cooperation following the Northland Mayoral Forum, which kick-started the workload for new Kaipara mayor, Jason Smith, just hours after he was sworn into office last Friday.

Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club have awarded the President’s Scholarship Award …

“The forum was a welcoming environment, as I already knew my counterparts, and there was also an emphasis emerging of collaborative projects, such as shared services in things like information technology, or IT.” Mayor Smith said.

“There is also a shared view in transport and roading of getting to stand shoulder to shoulder in Northland, in dealing with central government on matters such as regional roading. “It was interesting for me to see from my involvement with the former

Kaipara Development Agency, that there is a much more collaborative mood and attitude than was the case then.” At his swearing-in ceremony, he said he would hit the ground running with his ear to the ground and shoulder to continued on page 3 … the wheel.

Colin, who once attended the kindergarten himself, created the sculpture as part of his bachelor of applied arts degree with NorthTec, which required him to complete projects that told a story. Head teacher Emma Parsons said: “This is going to be awesome for our children because it brings the story to life. It is a provocation for their own artwork.” The glass case was donated by Ray and Kaz at Glass Dr.

Workload begins for new mayor

u by Ayla Miller

Work is under way on the netball and tennis courts for the multisport precinct Sportsville at Memorial Park, Dargaville.

p Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith was accompanied by his partner, Diane Foreman as he was sworn in p Sportsville Dargaville chairman Chris Biddles and foreman David Wright

Sportsville Dargaville chairman, Chris Biddles, says the facility is expected to be up and running by the beginning of June. “It is really great to have the courts under way and we are looking forward to the completed project,” Mr Biddles said. The precinct has largely been planned by the Kauri Coast Recreational Society over the last three years. The final cost of the facility is estimated to be $2.2 million and funding was secured through grants from Foundation North, New Zealand Lotteries and Pub Charity, following initial seed funding from

Kaipara District Council and local stakeholders. The contract for six courts to be shared by tennis and netball was given to Robinson Asphalts. “What drives me is making Kaipara a great place to live. It’s so important we look after our kids, and get them involved in sport and recreation,” said Mr Biddles. A givealittle page has also been set up to raise money for the court lighting and the $100,000 shortfall. To help towards the shortfall visit givealittle.co.nz/cause/ sportsville-dargaville. ¢

“This in fact is how it’s been, as after the forum, I am now immersed in the Long Term Plan Consultative Document, which is to be finalised on Wednesday (February 28) and then go out for public comment. “There are some 250 pages of reports to cover at the meeting. This is not a draft plan. It covers the next three year’s plans for everyone to talk about. It says to people ‘do you want polka dots, or do you want stripes’.” He said at last Friday’s ceremony that the by-election was a credit to Kaipara, with just over 42 per cent of voters recorded. This compared to

a same-day council voting turnout in Auckland of just 24 per cent. “The Kaipara turnout was significant and indicated civic pride.” Mayor Smith plans an individual office. His partner, Diane Foreman, is an Auckland businesswoman and currently writing a book with international links, requiring extensive travel. “In the next few weeks for instance, Diane is off to Melbourne, Singapore and Hong Kong. For myself, I am looking forward to Kaipara’s biggest and best event — the Northland Field Days.” ¢

NRC SMART INFORMATION WITH NORTHLAND REGIONAL COUNCILLOR KAIPARA WARD, PENNY SMART

ITS TIME TO STEP IT UP!

The NRC Long Term Plan Consultation document will be out mid-March. It reflects what the community has asked us to do: • Do more to clean up our waterways • Do more to protect our native species • Do more to provide better flood protection

In order to do this work, we will be asking for an increase in the Regional Council portion of your rates. You will also be able to make a submission on anything else NRC does that you feel is important. We have planned a series of open days to hear from our communities, as there will be no formal hearings. Come and talk to us at the Dargaville Town Hall on Tuesday the 27th March 9.30-11.30, or you can also go to the NRC website and have your say online. The consultation process closes at 4pm Tuesday 17th April. The full LTP documents will be available to download from the NRC website.

COME AND SEE US AT THE NORTHLAND FIELD DAYS 1ST TO 3RD OF MARCH, SITE #251, FONTERRA ROAD.

Our focus these field days is predominantly on freshwater and pest management, this aligns with our Long-Term Plan proposals. We will have lots of interesting and

interactive stands, including pests, weeds, Enviro Schools and maritime issues. Wattle Ice Cream is our quirky give away product this year, highlighting one of our many pest plants we have here in Northland. On hand to answer any questions will be our very experienced and skilled staff, Councillors and representatives from some of our partner groups including the Dargaville Intermediate school, Ruawai College and the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group.

COASTAL HAZARD MAPS

New Coastal Hazard Maps identifying land potentially at risk of flooding from storm surge and long-term erosion by the seas, have been released by NRC. We have many potentially vulnerable areas in Kaipara. Including the Dargaville CBD, Ruawai, Kaihu and Paparoa. The maps show the estimated flood and erosion hazards in 50 years time, predicted to be .4m and in 100 years time, predicted to be 1m. To view the maps, go to www.nrc.govt.nz/coastalhazardmaps Please note that the maps do not take into consideration flood remediation measures currently in place and or planned in the future. Reminder to dog owners Kaipara District Council is reminding dog owners of their rights and responsibilities following a number of complaints about roaming dogs. Under the Dog Control Act 1996, Kaipara District Council is charged with ensuring that all the legal requirements of the act are met, this includes carrying out door to door checks for unregistered dogs together with undertaking enforcement procedures with regard to any dogs that are not being kept under control by their owners. This may include issuing infringement notices for nonregistration, no dog ID microchips or failure to control or confine where dogs may be wandering or aggressive, or where a dog attack has occurred. “Dog ownership responsibilities include ensuring the dog is cared for at all times, that it is currently registered and microchipped — where applicable, and that it is kept under control at all times,” says KDC spokesperson Ben Hope.

Biting can result in serious consequences for the dog, its owner and the victim. Dogs responsible for attacks on people or other animals can be seized, the dog owner charged with an offence under the Dog Control Act 1996 and may be liable on conviction by the court to a fine, together with a destruction order against the dog. “Take photographs of the offending dog and note the address from where the dog is homed. If a non-aggressive, habitual roaming dog is causing a nuisance — if possible contain it and call Armourguard Animal Control.” Dog traps are available for loan on request to Armourguard Animal Control. Telephone Armourguard Animal Control on 0800 105 890 — this number is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. ¢

School goes for silver award u by Christine Yardley

Maungaturoto Primary School is going for ‘green’ silver as part of the Enviroschools movement to foster a generation that thinks and acts sustainably, which has attracted 1,000 schools and 260,000 children nationwide.

p Room 7 at Maungaturoto Primary hard at work weeding their garden

Project leader, Lynnette Haddow, sees many benefits from the school’s involvement. “The Enviroschools programme teaches kids how to be part of the natural world. They take ownership of their projects, record progress and problem solve. They become engaged learners and they love it.” Having already gained the Enviroschools bronze medal, the school has set its sights on silver. To date pupils have set up a Zero waste

initiative by turning waste into firebricks, which are then sold to raise funds for other projects. The Living Landscapes requirement has been met with five chickens, a worm farm, vegetable gardens and an orchard now in place, with produce used for the Feed the School project. Miss Haddow is now looking to broaden local support for the programme. “We would love the wider community to come and work with the children.” Contact lynnette@maungaturoto. school.nz. ¢

Churches unite for prayer day Swimming champs The annual world day of prayer will be held on Friday, March 2 and representatives from churches in Dargaville are encouraging people to come along.

Front row from left: Rhonda Carrim of the Church of the Nazarene, Reverend Pat Boon of the Anglican Holy Trinity Church, and Dargaville world prayer day organiser Beth Muir

The world day of prayer is a worldwide movement led by christian women of many traditions, who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year. It was started by a group of women in the United States in 1887, and it is now celebrated in more than 170 countries. “It’s a good way of coming together for one common purpose,” said Dargaville organiser Beth Muir. In New Zealand the world day of prayer was first held in 1931. Last year over 200 services were held in New Zealand with 7,499 people attending. The theme of this year’s service is ‘All God’s creation is very good,’ and

it has been prepared by the women of Suriname. Through music and liturgy, the service addresses such topics as biodiversity, natural disasters, climate change and pollution An offering is taken during the service and this year will be distributed to Christian World Service for improving rural livelihoods in Nicaragua, The Bible Society for trauma healing of children in Guyana, and the Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy in New Zealand. Everyone is invited to join in this year’s service in Dargaville, which will be held in the Methodist Church at 7pm followed by supper. ¢

p School spirit was in full force at the Ruawai College School Swimming Sports earlier this month. KAIPARA SPOTLIGHT Kaipara District Council

The Kai Iwi Lakes The Kai Iwi Lakes nestled within the Taharoa Domain, are one of New Zealand’s best holiday spots to stay and play in. Only three hours from Auckland, 35 kilometres from Dargaville. The Lakes sit amongst 538 hectares of premier recreation reserve with white sand, freshwater dune lakes that are renowned for their jewel-like beauty and clear waters. Perfect for a wonderful camping experience with the choice of two campgrounds located on the lake foreshore, both offering an ideal camping experience for tents, caravans or motorhomes. You’ll need some gold coins for the ablutions block also! The calm waters of the Lakes make for an ideal location to try out stand up paddle-boarding, without worrying about being wiped out by a rogue wave; bring your inflatable swans, unicorns and other props to make for a great Instagram shot. Find a great vantage point and watch the sunset (or sunrise, if you’re that way inclined). There are great walking and cycling tracks, which are easy for most fitness levels and some great little spots where you can enjoy a refreshing dip as you make your way around. The Lakes are a social place, and to get the best out of your stay you should get to know your neighbours. This is a place where families come every summer, sometimes spanning generations, so secure some great summer friendships for years to come. Please don’t bring your pets. There’s a strict no-pet policy to protect the native wildlife in the surrounding 538 hectares of premier recreation reserve. The campground is becoming very popular so book ahead if you can online through www.kaiiwicamp.nz or email lakes@kaipara.govt. nz. Alongside a trip to the Lakes, there are plenty of day trips and other fantastic places to explore in the Kaipara District, including Trounson Park — 18kms north west of the Lakes; it’s a massive 586 hectares of forest reserve and farmland, and lets visitors get an idea of what pristine kauri forests used to look like. There’s easy walking tracks through the Park, and the ability to go on guided walks at night to spot the brown kiwi still living here. Waipoua Forest — About 37kms north is Waipoua Forest, home of the big guy himself, Tane Mahuta, and the largest unmodified kauri forest in New Zealand. It’s winding roads right through the middle of the forest to get there, but no matter how many times you’ve seen Tane Mahuta, he still manages to take your breath away. Photos never do it justice, you have to tick this one off your New Zealand bucket list. Kaihu Tavern — after an adorable slice of small-town life? The nearby Kaihu Tavern offers exactly that, with a hark back to the kiwi pubs of the 1980s, complete with pool tables, a backyard garden (with a view of local goats), and Lion Red on tap. Omamari Beach — the area is home to wild West Coast beaches, and the nearby Omamari Beach offers a glimpse of the 78km coastline. There’s a small beach community here, and while not as busy with people and development as Baylys Beach further down the coast, it’s just as beautiful, offering a vast coastline that disappears into the horizon, and opportunities for beach sports, walking, fishing and horse riding. Dargaville — The majority of visitors to the Lakes come from the South, and drive through Dargaville. This rural town was once a busy harbour town, and is built on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River. This is your last stop for a supermarket stop, and to stock up on last minute Lakes necessities. The Dargaville Museum features among other things, a gumdiggers hut that was once located at the Lakes, and provides an insight into the history of the area.

decided by census u by Ayla Miller

Funding for essential health services in Northland could be at risk if people do not fill out their census forms to record where they live. The Northland District Health Board (NDHB) is urging people in Northland to advise Statistics New Zealand they call Northland home, in order to receive the appropriate funding for the population. The Ministry of Health’s populationbased funding formula uses information gathered by the latest census to provide healthcare for thousands of people using these services. “Before the next census happens on Tuesday, March 6 please remind whanau, everyone you work with and everyone you care for to complete the census — online or paper form to increase health funding for Northland,” said Northland DHB chief executive Dr Nick Chamberlain. “Northland DHB really needs your help to get the census completed so millions more in health funding can be released back into the community.” The Te Ha Oranga organisation have released a series of campaign videos explaining why people should fill out their census forms. “It helps marae, hapu and iwi with useful statistics, ensuring we are able to provide better Whanau Ora

services where they are needed. With the information from the census, Te Ha Oranga can support whanau with quality health services such as outreach clinics, mobile nursing and cardiac outreach clinics in the Kaipara region,” said Te Ha Oranga acting general manager, Antony Thompson. Aranga 4584 State Highway 12 Red Soil, Blue Sky and Green Grass It's easy to fall in love with this farm. There are 154 hectares (125 effective), a very tidy 30-aside cowshed, a good comfortable home and a cottage. A 60 hectare lease block right next door could potentially add to your milking platform or serve as a support block. The east-facing aspect protects the farm from dry summer Westerly winds, and combined with the higher rainfall (1600mm) this helps to keep the farm greener for longer than most. The soil type is a volcanic ash, Katui Clay Loam, which the vendors say is free-draining and easy to farm. 2014 soil tests show excellent fertility. Currently well understocked, it is milking 220 cows on a fully self-contained low input system, and has resource consent for up to 330. Access is excellent. The main race runs the length of the road boundary for 2.7km right around the top of the farm, with the cowshed about halfway along it and side branches leading down into the farm. The home is a renovated and well-presented farm house with new deck around three sides, an open plan living area, and three bedrooms. It has insulation floor and ceiling, a wood burner with wet-back. This farm would be ideal for a first farm buyer or provide an addition to a larger farming enterprise. This will sell quickly so call now to avoid disappointment. “We stepped out of our comfort zone on this one. This is not something we have tried before,” said Rotary community service director, Keith Shadbolt, “But we’re glad we did.” Held at Tarakohe Farms the trek took riders over the farm and up to the Mooney Trig Station, from where they were able to enjoy the expansive views of the surrounding landscape and the inlets of the lower Kaipara harbour. On the way back riders were treated to a light lunch at the farm shed, followed by a short walk back to the parking areas. “Although numbers were down because of the rain, we were very

pleased with how it went. It was actually quite pleasant and the riders we did have all enjoyed themselves. A couple have already contacted us to see when the next one will be,” Keith said. “As a result we are looking at doing more of these, with the possibility of a second horse trek in either October or November.” The event was held to support the club’s fundraising efforts for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, the Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children fund, as well as the Maungaturoto Dementia Unit fund. ¢

Council offers ice cream innovation A clever culinary coup: that’s how the Northland Regional Council is hoping visitors to the Northland Field Days will view its wattle seed flavoured ice cream.

Please think about our birds Over the past month intense winds have been causing trouble for hundreds of shearwaters, petrels and penguins. There have been reports on many dead birds on the beaches along the coast right down to Bream Tail. The Centre received big numbers but many birds only required rest for a few days. It has been great having so many people phoning us seeking advice. We were able to tell them to place the birds in the grass amongst the sand dunes, so they could rest and re-oil their feathers before heading back to sea.

The council called on the skills of hospitality students from NorthTec’s Raumanga campus to create an ice cream flavoured with wattle seed extract. “It’s great to have the opportunity to partner with the regional council, giving our hospitality students a chance to work on something truly unique for the field days,” says Phil Alexander-Crawford, NorthTec’s director of development. NRC councillor, Penny Smart, says the council expects to give away about 1,500 individual 35 gram servings of Maungaturoto Storage containers

p Regional Council marketing and engagement manager, Natasha Stubbing, and Northtec secondyear cookery student, Jesse Laurenson, at work on the wattle seed flavoured ice cream

The rough seas were stopping them resting on the water and when they are forced to come ashore they are not able to stand or walk as they are designed to live on the water. This influx meant Robyn and I were getting home very late in the morning of the last week of January and start of February. Unfortunately, this caught up with both of us and I become unwell with Robyn following suit. Meantime, I had spent five days in hospital with a nasty virus. We are both nearly recovered now so it pleasing to see the bird numbers have slowed down! A big thanks to our team for stepping up with lots of support while we were run off our feet. However, on a disappointing note, we received many young red billed gulls (seagulls) that had wing damage due to stones being thrown at them. Remember, the seagull is protected and carries a $100,000 fine for any permanent damage done, or for killing them. We have also noticed an influx of ducks at Barge Park being caught by dogs and we even received a Native Pigeon that a person found floating in the pond. It had puncture wounds and many feathers missing; once again done by a dog that is not under control. Most injured birds will go for 48 hours without food of water, so it is best to contact the Centre for advice or give us the bird so we can help quickly. This time of the year is when we burn up our funds on medication and food for the birds, so a very big thank you to those that have made donations when bringing birds in.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Continued growth for practice Just over a year on since moving into larger premises in Foster’s Arcade — Tailored Legal Solutions Limited has doubled in size. Director Emma Smith built the business from scratch three years ago. Since then her business has continued to flourish and she recently welcomed a second barrister and solicitor, Ihapera Bentson, nee Paniora, on board. “Our capacity has increased to meet the growing demand and we are anticipating further growth in the near future,” says Emma. “It’s a positive indication about starting and developing a business in Dargaville and Northland. It is very easy for young professionals to think they have to leave Dargaville/Northland to get this calibre of work but we punch above our weight and work alongside the big city firms, which shows that it is possible to have a career and a lifestyle right here.” Both Emma and Ihapera were born and raised in Dargaville before moving away to gain their qualifications. Both have returned to Dargaville — Emma nearly nine years ago after 14 years in the UK and Ihapera two years ago —

EITHER WAY IT’S 20K

and with both having young energetic sons, they intend to be here for the long-term. “We are both very committed to our community and to providing a quality service in a comfortable, yet confident environment. We offer a range of services, specialising in litigation and dispute resolution, employment matters, relationship property planning, business support and estate planning. “Our estate planning business is growing and our litigation practice is extremely busy.” Emma says she is thankful to have a good support network around her. “I’ve got great colleagues, clients and support from the community. Of course, my family and friends are always hugely supportive.” The practice will be employing two more administration support staff in the next few months taking the team to six, with the possibility of a further lawyer and support team member by the end of the year. ¢

SAVE $1,000 WHILE STOCKS LAST The number one question they get asked regarding solar, is how long will it take to pay back my system? This is slightly different for everyone, but here in Northland, the answer is approximately six years. There are many things you can do to help reduce this payback time including: • Use timers so appliances run during the day, when the system is creating the most power • Invest in a hot water heat pump, which reduces power consumption by up to 80% —hot water is the biggest cost on most power bills • Invest in energy efficient heating such as a heat pump • Ensure your home is insulated and well ventilated — this makes it easier to heat, which means you don’t need to use as much of the power you create for heating purposes The key to successful solar, is using as much of the power you generate as possible, and that’s where Hubands Energy come in. They design a system that makes sure your system works as effectively as possible. Solar battery storage offers additional flexibility, with the

ability to store the power you create during the day and use it at night. As technology continues to evolve, the industry is seeing major developments in the functionality and affordability of solar battery storage. Hubands Energy have spent considerable time overseas researching and testing products, and is proud to be supplying the best in solar battery technology — all of which will be on display at the Northland Field Days. Solar and electric vehicles are a match made in heaven! As uptake of electric vehicles continues to grow, so does the demand for electricity. Those with solar, are able to power their vehicles for free. Several major car manufacturers have made a commitment to stop making petrol vehicles altogether by 2025. Internationally, the demand for more electricity is being met by solar in various forms, on private homes as we see here in Northland, but also through solar farms, which generate enough to power whole cities. Stop by during the field days to chat to the team or visit us at 15 Kioreroa Road, Whangarei.

Field days set to impress At last count there were 325 exhibitors registered for this year’s Northland Field Days and this number is expected to increase over the next week. The 34th show will be held over March 1-3 at Awakino Point and organisers promise there will be something for everyone. Vice president, Rachael de Vries, says the committee have been working very hard to get everything ready. “We are looking forward to getting it all up and running.” This year, there will be a new event organised by the Northland Cowboy Challenge Club. The club was established to support the objectives of the New Zealand Cowboy Challenge Association and its members. TO ALL OR VALUED FIELD DAYS CUSTOMERS Unfortunately we'll miss your company this year as the Aratapu Tavern is undergoing renovations to retain and regain that old colonial charm. We will be closed during the field days, but we plan to open again better than ever very soon! Please do drop in later in the year for a warm welcome and have a great Field Days!

WOLRD FAMOUS IN DARGAVILLE

Coming to town for Field Days?

DARGAVILLE northern

Aratapu Tavern has long been a field days destination thanks to their TexMex menu and country hospitality. This year they are right in the middle of a big renovation project, so the team there wish to apologise and advise that they will not be open during field days. Soon after, of course — but good things, as they say, take time. ¢

Rotary Time to… win scholarship presentation

17

Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club have awarded the President’s Scholarship Award to trainee nurse Mackenzie Rose from Maungaturoto.

p Owners of new Dargaville shop Time To Sadie Parker — left — and Des Cogan — right — presented a $500 voucher to Dargaville Primary School principal Alan Russek. Mr Russek won the lucky draw for $500 off the bike of his choice or $500 in value of stock of his choice from the shop, as part of the store’s opening celebrations.

p Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club President Alex Tetzner presents the scholarship award to Mackenzie Rose

“The scholarship is for $1,500 to assist with tertiary education,” said club president Alex Tetzner. “We had excellent applicants, which made the selection process very difficult. We were impressed with Mackenzie’s drive and determination.” The scholarship means Mackenzie will be able to continue her studies with less financial pressure and brings HUGE 1/2

her nursing qualification a step closer. “There are nurses in my family, and being around them made me really determined and excited to become a nurse myself,” she said. “I am drawn to pediatric nursing, as I love working with children.” Mackenzie is currently studying at Massey University’s School of Nursing in Albany. ¢

Studying the sciences

Good news for good samaritan

u by Ayla Miller

Ruawai College student Harriet Spoelstra was one out of 70 students from all over New Zealand to be selected for the Otago University Advanced School Sciences Academy. Harriet travelled to Dunedin for a week in January to attend the science camp and will go back in the middle of the year for another week. “It was a great opportunity to meet new people and to experience what it may be like studying science at a tertiary level. We had to choose two major subjects to learn about throughout the week,” she said. Her first subject was marine science, where she and the other students conducted experiments on different marine species they collected themselves. “My other major subject was genetics. In this subject we genetically modified E coli bacteria, so that they became resistant to two different types of antibiotics. We also had a pretend murder mystery and we had to test people’s DNA to find the identity of the murderer. “I also chose a short elective, quantum physics, in which we learnt a little about lasers and how they are used to detect gravitational waves, and also experimented with liquid nitrogen and superconductors.”

p Kelvin McKenzie, a paraplegic Baylys Beach resident who has been picking up rubbish on his daily outings around the block, was offered free rubbish bags by the Kaipara District Council for his efforts. Caregiver Kathy Vodanovich said they have also had empty council rubbish bags turn up in his letter box, which she suspects might be from caring locals who heard his act of kindness was beginning to cost him. “Thank you to the council for supplying the bags and to the neighbours for always cheering me on,” said Kelvin.

p Ruawai College student Harriet Spoelstra was selected to attend the Otago University Advanced School Sciences Academy

Harriet says she thoroughly enjoyed the academy and would encourage any student who would like to study science at university to apply. “It is a great opportunity and can help you make that big decision about your future.” ¢

Northland has been confirmed as the number one place in New Zealand for chipped or cracked windscreen claims over summer according to data gathered by AA Insurance. Data figures indicate 10 per cent of customers gained damage in Northland, eight per cent in Southland, Otago, Taranaki and Manawatu, and seven per cent in Central Auckland and Waikato. These are similar to the same four-week time period last summer. Kiwi invention brings the voltage by Andy Bryenton

Electric cars have risen to the top of the tables when it comes to speed, and are making huge advances in range and utility. On four wheels, everybody is talking about companies like Tesla and Rimac. But here in New Zealand, on two wheels, the name to remember is UBCO.

Coming from New Zealand, both of the designers of UBCO’s go-anywhere electric utility bike were familiar with the small farm motorcycles our rural people work with every day. These little 125-200cc machines aren’t built for power but for economy, versatility and balance, and have a common design language, developed in the 70s and 80s and still the same today. UBCO, the electric utility bike, aims to replace these with an electric alternative, while also allowing riders to branch out into recreational riding. Anthony Clyde and Daryl Neal are the masterminds behind UBCO — which utilises revolutionary electric two-wheel-drive technology. Both had been active in the e-bike field for many years before they saw the opportunity to develop something that’s neither a racing machine or a strict commuter,

but a small, rugged, versatile electric utility bike which can travel both on — and off-road. The key to their design is a powerfully tough frame, coupled with twin hub-mounted electric motors and a modern high performance 48Ah lithiumion battery situated low in the frame for stable weight distribution. For many the big question is — why change? Small farm bikes are evergreen, right? Well, not as green as an electric machine with the same power and torque, and the stability and grip of both wheels driving it. A machine which boasts up to 100 kilometres over rolling terrain for just under $1 of power. And one which is utterly silent, meaning that livestock will not be spooked by engine noise. Or, indeed, that when it’s time to fire up that pump or round up the herd early in the morning, those still asleep on the farm get a bit more shut-eye!

‘Building Blocks To Grow The Future’

25

The Dargaville Community Development Board will be attending the field days to profile projects they are involved in, and create greater awareness of how the community can work together to achieve desired outcomes. Part of this is the ‘Building Blocks For The Future’ strategy, which is to work with stakeholders, the Kaipara District Council and the community to promote economic development in Dargaville. There will be an interactive ‘Jenga’ style display with building blocks, at the site, to help people envision how this strategy works. “Come and test your mental and physical skill to be into win a prize,” says development manager Lorraine Davidson. “At the field days you can be informed specifically about the CCTV Project, the Co-working — Community Business Hub and receive an update on the progress of the retirement village. “We are interested to talk with organisers of events, to develop a calendar of significant annual events to attract visitors to the area. “We would also like to identify how we would like Dargaville to be perceived

in-line with our environment and develop a nationwide campaign, that will promote this image to both regional and offshore visitors.” As part of the retirement village initiative, the DCDB was successful in securing a grant for a feasibility study to determine if a retirement village is achievable, which provided positive results. “Over the past year we have been successful with grant applications to assist with our own projects, while also assisting several local community groups to secure funding for their own projects. “These grant applications have been successful to a total value of approximately $200,000.” Visit their website dargavillenz. com, check out their marquee site 303B at the Northland Field Days or visit the information centre outside the headquarters. ¢

Kaipara Grey Power has played a prominent part in the local scene, especially at election time, hosting candidates’ meetings. Golden Years seminars, such as with the Cancer Support Group, have experts available to advise on what is available and the best one can do when the end is near. The National Advocacy Committee has negotiated a better travel allowance for those who have to travel distances for health appointments. Kaipara also asked the Federation Board to do everything possible to get 100% cell phone and broadband coverage in Northland. We also ask the mayor or councillors and elected members of other public boards to attend meetings, and report on what is happening. Grey Power partnered with Pulse Energy in 2013 to bring you Grey Power Electricity, an innovative partnership committed to providing members with lower electricity prices, long term price protection and better services. “With Pulse Energy, we found the perfect

Built in the spirit of craftsmanship Branson Tractors made their mark in the USA, and are now doing so in New Zealand with precision engineering and highperformance features. When you drive a Branson you will see, hear, and feel the difference. Design, engineering and construction are controlled by the Branson Tractor Company right through to engine manufacturing, so the entire tractor functions in total harmony. The result is a fully featured, high-quality tractor that looks great and is a pleasure to operate. It comes down to a range of special features, which make this small utility tractor one of a kind — a tight turning circle for better manoeuvrability, true flat deck configuration for better weight distribution and space usage, and a large range of factory supplied attachments such as front-end loaders, fourin-one buckets, grabs, pallet forks and grass management tools. Branson tractors have been made in South Korea for over 40 years by Kukje Machinery. Their credentials are impressive — including technology agreements with Japanese brand Yanmar and license agreements to build Cummins engines. Branson Tractors were awarded the 2017 Gold Level Tractor Manufacturer Award by the Equipment

Dealers Association — a huge coup for the company. Innovations such as Branson’s state of the art front-end loader with its simple single joystick operation and shuttle shift transmissions, such as you’d find on much larger agricultural tractors, helped scoop this prestigious prize. Stevens Outdoor Power Equipment are proud to bring the Branson range to Kiwi farms — and to the Northland Field Days for you to experience first hand!

It is an ongoing battle beating corrosion on chassis of vehicles from SUVs and motorhomes, to quad bikes and UTVs. Even new vehicles quite often have signs of rust showing, which has developed from the time they are manufactured and transported to their point of sale. Prolan has been developed to protect your chassis long-term, in the harshest of environments — sand, salt, mud and fertiliser. This environmentally friendly coating, which is made from sheep’s wool lanolin, adheres to metal, providing protection for farm and marine vehicles, truck chassis, fertiliser spreaders, motorhome chassis or any vehicle exposed to a corrosive environment. It is easy to apply a coating of Prolan using a trigger pack, garden sprayer or airless spray gun. First remove any dirt and scale, and allow the chassis to dry before applying Prolan. Once coated, the longer the period between application and vehicle use, the better the surface will stay. The coating works out cost-effective — a 4 litre can of Prolan will easily coat a five metre truck chassis.

Many different companies, both here and in Europe, are realising the benefits of this environmentally friendly product. From fertiliser loader chassis, mussel harvest loaders and trucks, concrete manufacturers to machinery hire companies. Vehicle testing stations are recommending a Prolan coating to help motor vehicles pass their COFs and WOFs. The coating will last on anywhere between 1-5 years or longer, depending on the situation. Prolan cannot be removed by cold water blasting — this allows vehicle chassis to be cleaned without removing the rust protection. By taking a little time to apply a coat of Prolan, the benefits are well worth while as there are savings on maintenance, component replacement and long-term Prolan will increase machinery life and resale value. The application of force

Pay attention!

u by Andy Bryenton

They say that sometimes less is more, but when it comes to certain endeavours, applying more force and more power is just the only way to go. And it’s not that such excess can’t be elegant at the same time — look at the beautiful design of a hydroelectric dam, the sleek shape of the Concorde or listen to the sound of a big classic muscle car firing up.

around road works

In the world of off-road vehicles, more power has to be balanced with careful weight distribution and a suspension setup, which allows that raw force to reach the ground when it’s needed. That’s why Polaris have given careful consideration to every aspect of their new 1000cc Ranger — the first such machine to come with a four-figured displacement on the hood. Of course, Polaris are hardly strangers to building truly staggeringly powerful off-road machines for recreation and sports. Their RZR series is built to beat everything from the competition to mud, deserts and snow. However, the Ranger line has always been more about work than play. And for the same reason that a 500 horsepower tractor is the top of the power range in agriculture, 1000cc — actually, to be precise, a 999cc fourstroke twin cylinder engine — is the cutting edge for farm work. This is because the Ranger 1000, with its power steering, all-wheel-drive and engine braking system for hill descent is not about top speeds, but hard work. Over 1,100 kilos of towing capacity and 680 kilos of payload

with three passengers hard. Eighty horsepower geared to slog through winter paddocks hard. This is a machine designed for farmers who own gnarly terrain, and want to be able to truly say they are the master of it. It’s also, of course, for farmers who have huge loads to carry for big tasks like fencing, repairs and building.

The Ranger XP 1000 HD EPS has a long name, but it’s one, which you should remember if you’ve found our current quad or side-by-side unable to cope with the roughest stuff on the farm. It exists for the same reason as sledgehammers, bazookas and space rockets — because sometimes getting the job done simply calls for maximum power. ¢
