p The comradery of the surfing community came together last weekend in memory of well-known surfboard glasser Philip Jamieson. Philip worked for Wayne Parkes Surfboards and was known throughout the country for his top quality glassing technique and loyalty to the surfing fraternity. Fellow surfer Martin Lindgreen said surfers all search for the same personal excellence and although they compete in the water they remain friends. “It is the perfect balance that we strive for in the waves, amongst the yin and yang of the ocean, and this creates lifelong friendships, which is what many of us had with Phil.” Full story on page 3 …

We raised $2,019.60, which is very exciting,” said organiser Samantha Allen, head girl. All the proceeds go to the Northland Cancer Society. The school has 32 students attending the Relay for Life in Whangarei on April 1–2, and they will continue fundraising toward the event with bake sales and other initiatives.

The Kaipara and New Zealand surfing community farewelled master surfboard maker and surfer, Philip Jamieson, last weekend in recognition of his life, friendship and contributions to the New Zealand surfing scene.

p Ian Godfrey, Abe Pascal, Martin Lindgreen and Gary Bowden at the memorial paddle for Philip Jamieson

Philip died at the end of November aged 66 and is survived by his sister Diana Brydon, his son Ben and granddaughter Ella. Surfers from the Kaipara and beyond paddled out from Waipu Cove, where Phil lived in recent years, to acknowledge and show respect for the man known as ‘one of the best glassers’ in the New Zealand surfing world. He worked together with lifelong friend and fellow surfboard maker Wayne Parkes, where the pair made careers out of their passion and love for surfing. “Phil was first a foremost a surfer with a very good reputation for quality

workmanship of the surfboards he made. There are a lot of people who go surfing but not many people who are surfers, and Phil was a true surfer — surfing was in his heart,” said Wayne. “Phil was a fantastic craftsman and loved what he did. Most of us had been dealing with him for more than 40 years.” Friend Martin Lindgreen said Phil and Wayne were a brilliant team and their loyalty to the surfing fraternity and total accuracy as surfboard manufacturers, that still shape surfboards by eye, hand and feel, not machines, made the combination superb.” ¢

“We’ll be adding many more independent publishers to the pool in coming months, along with freelancers throughout the country, and offering New Zealanders their own voice. We have secured reliable and balanced sources of international and national news, and sports feeds, so as Newsie grows and expands, there’ll be more to read, and opportunities to comment and give feedback. “This is truly a news site for New Zealanders, by New Zealanders, who at last have the chance to make it their own.” Brian says Newsie will have an incredible depth of regional and national coverage thanks to its media partners. “They are the eyes and ears of their communities and are committed to feeding a rich variety of important regional news, colourful stories of New Zealanders and some entertaining tales. Clickbait is banned; the

Kardashians outlawed… Newsie will have real news about Kiwis and we’ll never ask readers if they can believe what happens next. Tramps will not buy Ferraris and celebrities will have to earn a mention, not merely get a haircut or change spouse.” The managing director of Dargaville’s NorthSouth Multi Media and publisher of the Kaipara Lifestyler, Allan Mortensen, said he is “extremely excited about the opportunity to be involved in an independent news website. “It will be based on historical journalism values and help provide a service that is far removed from an extraordinary low standard that the multinational news organisations seemed to have achieved by developing their digital presence based on clickbait and sensationalism.” The new service can be found at http://newsie.co.nz/ ¢

Mangawhai Riverside Holiday Park recently celebrated the completion of a one million dollar, privately funded project connecting the park to the Mangawhai eco-care sewerage system. “The formal handover and blessing ceremony was the culmination of seven years work by the board of directors driven by Mark Paisey leading the infrastructure committee” says the park manager Linda Smith. p From toddlers to elders, everyone is welcome at the Mangawhai Kapa Haka group

Local man Nigel Rogers was inspired to form a kapa haka group after moving into the area five years ago and realising a need for it in the community. “We looked into it last year but this year we thought it was a good time to start. We’ve had three sessions so far — at the first meeting we only a handful of people but it was still good, and at the last session we had a big turnout.” Nigel said it was great to see the group grow and was especially impressed with the variety of age groups attending. “It’s cool seeing the young kids mixing with the older

people. Some members are in their 60s and the youngest is probably my four-month-old daughter — the toddlers jump around and love getting involved.” Nigel’s vision for the kapa haka group involves each whanau bringing along a new song to a session and teaching it to the rest, mainly Mangawhai locals, but also members from Wellsford and Kaiwaka. Nigel and the five others who have helped establish the group hope they can support local events such as openings, and also offer support at tangis in the future. ¢

Putting Maungaturoto on the map u by Joanna Manson

Maungaturoto’s new ‘welcome’ signs are finally on display after two years of consultation and design. Residents Association president Terri Donaldson said the process to secure and approve the new signs took longer than usual due to the new location of the east-side sign. “Because one of the signs had to be placed in a 100km area we had to do a lot of consultation and planning to meet NZTA criteria,” she said. The Residents Association was initially contacted by the Kauri Coast Tourism Development Group who were happy to help with the paperwork if Terri and her team we able to fully fund the project. The end result is something that Terri and the community remain positive about. The signs feature the work of local photographer Kathy Strong, and the bottom section incorporates the importance of the local iwi. Terri says the tourism development group is

Wrestlers come to town u by Anna Harding

Professional wrestlers from Auckland’s Maniacs United are set to come to Dargaville for a third show. All profits from the show will be used to help rebuild a house for the Gilligan family whose house burnt down in January. Ray White Jean Johnson Realty is one of the local business backing the show. Jean says she “loves supporting the community, enjoys wrestling and watched it as a child. The Gilligan family have been to other matches and they were very supportive and loved every match.” Matich’s fish shop and the Northern Wairoa Lions are also supporting the show. “We heavily believe in giving back and we can’t do it without the support of the community and surrounding areas so head on up (to the event) and support a great cause,” say the Manics. Janneke Gilligan says that the community support so far has been “overwhelming”. The show will be on Saturday, March 18 at 5.45pm in the Northern Wairoa

Over the past two months we have received many native birds that have been found in trouble. The good news is we have been releasing many as well. The baby owl found at Tangiteroria School just before Christmas is ready for release, so I will take it back to the school so the children can see it being released. Three harrier hawks have been returned and released to their area, two baby tuis have grown up and are now ready for release and the ten-dayold kiwi chick caught in the very hot weather is now eating well and putting on good weight. When we received him he was 219 grams in weight and his weight is now 267 grams - we will keep him until he reaches 500 grams. One of our native pigeons that we have had on display for over one year, suddenly started flying so it will be returned back to the area it came from. When leaving a bird in one of the holding cages at the Northpower Native Bird Recovery Centre, please don’t put water or food in the cage with them. It may seem like the right thing to do but you could end up doing the injured bird more harm than good. Any wild bird that is in trouble and being handled will have very high stress levels, so they just need rest and have time to calm down. On weekends Robyn and I don’t go to the centre until 4pm as we are busy catching up with jobs at our home. However, Bruce our vet, will often call at the Centre and put any birds inside. Over the past two months we have often been at the Centre until well after midnight working with the birds. Because we offer a 24/7 service hours can be quite long. In fact we had two nights in a row when we were still working after 2am - so now you can understand why some days I look like an owl with big eyes! We were asked recently why did we received the little Auckland green gecko. We are a drop off place for the Department of Conservation. Bird’s and protected animals are often found outside business hours, so making sure something is safe and that can be medically checked by our vet is what we are here for. Once we receive something like a gecko the first thing we do in inform DOC and they decide what should happen next. Over Christmas I had to meet some people that had found a Kiwi which had been hit on the road way up north. I met them in Kamo at 1.30am in the morning. Robert and Robyn Webb and Staff.

Paying it forward

News in Brief As of Saturday, April 1 there will be no letter deliveries or mail pick-ups on Saturdays for any rural customers. Rural contractors will continue to deliver parcels and subscription newspapers on Saturdays though. New Zealand Post chief operating officer Mark Stewart says “letter volumes continue to fall sharply,

whereas the number of parcels and other products in our network is increasing,” NZ Post has held off moving to five-day letter delivery for all rural customers for as long as possible but the continuing decline in letter volumes means six-day delivery is no longer sustainable.

Leftover funds from a comedy night organised by Dargaville Vets in October last year have been donated to the Dargaville Fire Service.

Mayor’s Column It is quite incredible that two months of 2017 have passed already. Councillors reconvened in late January and since that time have had plenty to deal with. Town Plan You will be aware a Group is working on a master plan for Mangawhai. Belinda Vernon (Group Chair) presented to Council at our February meeting. They are still on track to release their “draft for discussion” document by mid-year. Councillors had a strategy session at my house in late January. Out of the session we agreed that we should consider a similar project for Dargaville. The issues will be quite different compared to Mangawhai but the need is as strong. In mid-February Councillors and staff met with the Dargaville Business Forum, Dargaville Community Development Board, Kauri Coast Promotions and Iwi to talk about the general idea which I am pleased to say had unanimous support. The meeting concluded with parties going away to have a think about how such an initiative for Dargaville could be structured. Obviously like the Mangawhai Plan a high level input from the wider Dargaville community will be necessary.

Museums Kaipara is very fortunate to have three outstanding Museums in Dargaville, Matakohe and Mangawhai. I attended a function at the Lighthouse to unveil a revamped Kaipara (Dargaville) museum. I suspect many of our citizens have not had a look through these treasures that we have. Set a weekend aside and have a look through all three. Financially they all need your support and I think you will be surprised at the quality of what’s inside and also the innovative way that our history is portrayed.......well worth doing.

The evening was originally organised for farmers to enjoy a “light hearted evening of laughs” during a time of low dairy payouts. It’s the second time Dargaville Vets has run the event. Joanna Bruin said the night was a community effort and involved a number of local businesses including the fire brigade. “We raised funds to cover the cost of the evening and what we had left over we wanted to give back” she said.

The vet centre along with the well wishes of other sponsors from the comedy night were happy to see the $2,774.53 go to the Dargaville Fire brigade. Station Officer Jason Campbell said they were “absolutely stoked with the cheque.” “We will definitely put the money to good use towards different equipment funds. Because we are all volunteers, there is always a need for new gear and as a result we are always fundraising.” ¢

Roading I continue to get calls about the state of some of our roads. This year has been a challenging one for us with spring work being delayed due to a late wet period in late September/ October followed by the dry!. Roading is by far the largest expense item we have and in fact is the majority of what we spend. We have about 1500 kilometres of road paid for by only 14,000 ratepayers. We also have a level of debt that we have to lower so reducing debt without having an impact on roading is close to impossible and a huge challenge for us, but it is Kaipara’s reality.

We are just as excited about the new year as you are! Thank you for the wonderful response, we have extended our special $49 new patient examination for a limited period. We have also introduced sedation dentistry.... Taking away your fear of the dentist!

Before

Citizens Awards

One lane bridges

KDC had a practice of recognizing those that have made a significant contribution to Kaipara. These awards ceased when Commissioners were appointed. I continue to be humbled by the huge amount of voluntary work many of you do to make our communities what they are. Before having this role I did not understand the extent of that involvement. So with that in mind we have decided to re-instigate the Citizens Awards. Will be calling for nominations shortly. A Council subcommittee of four, one from each electing Ward (initially Anna Curnow, Andrew Wade and Peter Wethey) and myself will make the selection. Membership of the selection committee will rotate annually, amongst ward Councillors.

Great to see that project is about to commence finally. Removing the bridges plus the roading alignment that will accompany that will be a great benefit to the western side of our region. Annual Plan (budget) Councillors have begun looking at next financial year’s budget and work plan. That document will come forward for your feedback in early April. Your input is sought before we adopt the final version in June. So please take some time to have a look and comment back to us on where your rates are being spent. Regards

Together the group will build skills in leadership and team working alongside 12 other Northland students, while experiencing challenge and adventure from outside the usual comfort zone. Both Danielle and Matai were nominated last year by Dargaville

High School Dean Katrina Sylva. The pair have already started to train to prepare for the physical demands of the course. “We have to run 3km in under 25 minutes so I’ve been going for runs after school,” said Matai. Danielle hopes to gain more confidence from the experience while Matai hopes to hone and develop his leadership skills.  ¢

Celebrations and renovations A helping hand u by Ann Morgan

u by Joanna Manson

The Wellsford RSA celebrated 56 years of service to the community as they finalised renovations modernising the inside of the building.

Help for vulnerable mothers in the form of new baby clothes during the first year of a newborn’s life will soon be available in Dargaville.

“We have just celebrated 56 years and had a local musician playing 50s and 60s music — it was great to have the renovations completed. You have to remember why we are all here. This place was built so people could come and communicate with one another. It is not just about remembering Anzac Day on the day, it is about remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice always,” says secretary Shirley Blakemore. “We are very proud of the renovations we have done to modernise the premises for the community to use for different events, including birthday celebrations, conferences, funerals and workshops.” Shirley says they used the same local tradesmen that completed the last renovations. “Roger Farr and his boys did the work in just four weeks and they did a fantastic job. At the moment we are tracking under budget and it looks fresh and bright and it is very exciting.” The internal entrance has been modernised, the old panelling and bench seats have been removed from around the walls, and skylights have been added into the ceiling allowing more light into the building. “Since the original renovations the building is being

Anniversary for surf competition

Big plans for small town

u by Anna Harding

At their last meeting the Ruawai promotions and development group agreed to support the idea of making a walkway and cycle track along a stop bank. Now a sub-committee to make it happen has been formed.

u by Joanna Manson

A small swell forecast couldn’t deter the 40 lifeguards who participated in the 25th New Zealand Lifeguard Longboard Nationals.

p A sunset view on the stopbank, that a sub-committee from the Ruawai promotions and development group plans to make into a walkway and cycle track

p Women’s finalists in the New Zealand Lifeguard Longboard Nationals held at Mangawhai Heads

Competitors came from across the northern region to tackle the small surf at Mangawhai Heads on February 18. Organiser of the event Tony Baker said the Open Mens finals was an all “Mangawhai affair” while the Classic division was a “spectacle” featuring many old and heavy longboards. “Vintage Pre-1970 longboards make for interesting surfing and all the competitors got stuck in and had a great time,” said Tony. Last year’s winner, Hira Edmonds from the Bethells Beach club put on a stand-out performance but it was veteran Mangawhai Lifeguard and former winner Tai Flavell who took the top title. “It was great to see a strong

field of elder-statesmen in the Master Division with the likes of Graham Darlow, Greg Gibb from Mangawhai and John Skirrow from the Muriwai club enjoying the small waves. Eventual winner Paul Browne who is an icon in the NZ Longboard scene, graced the water with his traditional prowess.” In the Junior local grommets Bassie Waldron and Nubby Critchfield went head for head in the final, with both showing some ‘great skills on the nose’. However, it was Waldron who took top honours with a maiden victory in the event. to put a limestone topping down as well as having plans to have informational plaques about engineering, history and wildlife along the walkway. “The bigger picture is to try and link it up through to Matakohe and perhaps on to Paparoa. I believe there’s walkways coming from the east coast that could link up as well,” says Anna. However, “that maybe some way down the track” she says. The sub-committee is in touch with the Raupo drainage committee to make sure they are on board. “The stop bank will always and forever primarily be a flood bank protection device — that is the most important thing,” says Anna. ¢

Chair of the Ruawai promotions group, Bruce Crompton says that “we are keen to work with local groups and offer umbrella support in anyway we can.” The walkway is fitting with the group’s constitution of developing and helping make Ruawai a great place to live and a nice place for visitors to stop. “The walkway itself will go from the wharf to the end of Simpson’s road. About 3.7km. We are now putting together a full budget and starting to look at fund raising options,” said Anna Curnow, a member of the sub-committee. Although people already walk along the stopbank, the sub-committee plans

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Family fun at the field days u by Anna Harding

The Northland Field Days is a “local event to enjoy with the whole family — and one that won’t break the bank!” say organisers.

The Kaipara District Council wants to canvas opinion at the Northland Field Days this week with community facilitator Darlene Lang Gent encouraging the community to bring ideas and feedback to site 249a. “It’s a great time to come and meet the new councillors and chat to them about what people want for the district. We also want feedback on how best to promote Dargaville,” she said. Councillors including Mayor Greg Gent will be rostered on the site throughout the three days. The Dargaville library will share the KDC site and have a number of older books for sale, as well as signing up the community to the e-book system. “We will be demonstrating p Kaipara Library Manager Lisa Salter displaying their eBook catalogue with a tablet to show people how you can download magazines and and library staff will also be taking books. It’s certainly worth checking feedback for the proposed redesign out,” says Darlene. The council of the Dargaville Library.

Now in their 32nd year, the field days continue to showcase all things agricultural — from sawmill demonstrations through to the latest innovations in fencing and farming. But there will also be plenty of fun for kids and townies alike. Three lifestyle marquees and a market area are set to be there, with a

Increase in abandoned cats

Farewelling community stalwarts

u by Joanna Manson

u by Ann Morgan

Kaipara Kitty Haven hopes to shed light around the increase of cat dumpings in the Dargaville area.

The Kaiwaka community have farewelled long-time residents and community stalwarts Graham and Jenny Borck recently, as they moved to the Taupo area to be near family.

Since starting the haven in 2014, Sami-Jade Vanbuskirk’s love for cats and Dargaville’s lack of an SPCA meant she has re-homed over 150 of the furry friends. “People come to me with kittens and I have a Facebook page where they can get hold of me and people talk around town. At the moment we have eight kittens, we take them up to eight months old but unfortunately we can no longer take the older cats. Instead we try to find them foster homes.” The rescue effort is run out of SamiJade’s house, and between using social media to re-home the felines and taking care of their wellbeing, it has become a full-time job. But it’s the dumping of cats within the district that has kept her even more busy, and she says it has been an especially ‘bad issue’ for Notorious East Road. Desexing cats is something SamiJade has been working on since opening the haven. “There was some difference, with less strays cats since I started, however people don’t get their cats desexed. Just when you think that you’ve got the population down, by the next

p Sami-Jade and on of her kittens she is currently caring for

kitten season it’s double the strays,” she said. Ruawai Vets have been supportive to Kaipara Kitty Haven. “They try to do their best,” says Sami-Jade who is thankful for discounts they provide. Vet bills for the haven average around $600 a month and on top of that food is an extra $120 a week. To help out Kaipara Kitty Haven contact Sami-Jade via Facebook. ¢

The couple lived in Kaiwaka for more than 35 years and were heavily involved in supporting the community through many different initiatives. “When they first arrived in town we were just starting to build the club rooms at the sports grounds and Graham immediately gave his time freely to help with the project. They joined in and served with many community activities especially with sport,” said Wayne Leslie chairman of the Kaiwaka Sports Association. “They continued over the years to help at a moment’s notice — nothing was ever a problem and recently Graham became heavily involved with rugby refereeing. Even though they had work commitments they always found time to volunteer. “You can never get too many helpers especially from a sporting point of view and we appreciate all they have done. The couple were involved in play centre and school, Girl Guides, Plunket, and pony club as well as rugby, hockey, netball, athletics and many other local activities. “When we first came here it was a real farming community and the town

p Graham and Jenny Borck were farewelled by the Kaiwaka community recently

has grown and changed so much now,” says Jenny. “As we leave, we would like to encourage people to get involved in the many community things available to families whether it be through sport, school or other events. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have fun with your children, all it takes is a bit of time. The Kaipara is a great place to live and the Kaiwaka community is very supportive. We will miss Kaiwaka terribly — we have a huge amount of friends here and we look forward to hearing how well the town progresses in the future.” ¢

N O R T H L A N D F I E L D DAY S BUSINESS PROFILE

Helicopter pilot’s life u by Ann Morgan

Agricultural helicopter pilots have varied responsibilities on a dayto-day basis. Being a pilot in Northland means they can tackle four seasons in one day, and safety is always paramount. “Being a pilot is an awesome job. As I was growing up I wanted to be either a farmer or a pilot. I thought I would be a pilot when I was young and then become a farmer. I am still a pilot as I haven’t quite got the farm yet,” said HeliNorth base manager Reuben Wright. “It is a fun job and we meet lots of interesting people including farmers, and they all have their own farming style. You see many things that work in so many different ways. People may do something slightly different from each other but things still get achieved.” As a pilot safety is always the top priority for all concerned. “We constantly check the weather forecast throughout the day to see if there is rain or wind coming,” said Reuben. “We brief each client on the dangers of the helicopter when we are on site. This includes keeping away from the blades, especially the tail rotor as this is at body height and can get you. Staying away from the exhaust is also very important as the gases come out at approximately 600 degrees and will take

the skin off your hand.” Reuben says never to approach a helicopter from behind, always come from the front or the 10 and 2 o’clock position, this helps the pilot to see you. “We encourage people not to rush around a chopper. As helicopters are noisy, people think they need to hurry to or from it, but you don’t. When you rush your brain isn’t thinking clearly. Take your time as safety is of paramount importance.” If you are interested in learning more about helicopters or what HeliNorth can do for you, visit them at the Northland Field Days at site 171. ¢

Northland Field Days opens for the 32nd annual event between March 2 and 4, and top of the bill for farmers will be comprehensive trade exhibits with the latest and greatest in implements, machinery and innovations to enhance their business. “The Northland Field Days continue to champion all things farming and agricultural — from sawmill demonstrations through to the latest innovations in fencing and agriculture, with lifestyle and market exhibitors under the Lifestyle Pavilion marquees and even a specific area for markettype products,” said administrator Meagan Edmonds. “They and their families will also have a feast of entertainment. A major attraction this year will be chaps, spurs and cowboy hats with displays of horse cutting, one of Australasia’s fastest growing sports. “The Northland Field Days are very excited to be playing host to one of Northland’s top horse-cutting teams,

Graeme and Sharlene McInnes. First in the line-up of rural competition starting at 9am on Thursday March 2 is the Tractor Pull Business Challenge, where businesses compete. The Tractor Pull Bank Challenge follows soon after to see who crosses the line first to take home the trophy. “An opportunity to try your hand at racing, if you have a current driver licence, is the Three-legged Race — or teams of three,” said Meagan. Other show attractions back this year include the Clydesdales, musicians, NEST helicopter, Caro’s Critter’s mini-farm, Kidzone, Sheep ‘n’ Show, logger sports, sheep dog trials, young farmers cattle judging and lawn mower races.

Property investment advice delivers rewards In areas where rental property is in high demand, rents are high and available stocks for tenants are low, it can be tempting for investors to purchase ‘fixer-upper’ types of properties cheaply in order to quickly do them up and rent them out. In this situation though it is certainly a case of buyer beware, as landlords need to be careful that any property they provide meets all the minimum requirements in order to be used as rented accommodation. All landlords should have no problem providing quality accommodation with long-term tenancies in mind. For more information on what is required, you can visit tenancy.govt.nz. If you’re certain your property meets all its requirements, there are some

other areas in which landlords can invest a little money to provide the best possible return on their investment by way of higher rents and better quality tenants. The top three areas to consider are the kitchen, bathroom and general painting. Clean and modern looking kitchens are right up there on a tenants list of must-haves. In the bathroom, consider re-grouting tiled areas if needed or replacing old and worn lino to freshen up the whole space. Ensuring the space has proper ventilation such

Field days a feast of fun u by Andy Bryenton

When the Northland Field Days brings the town to the country this week, it’s also bringing a host of out-of-district visitors into the area for work and play. With so many folks on the road and away from their own kitchens, it’s going to be a busy time for our local eateries — all of whom are more than up to the challenge of satisfying a festival-sized hunger. From a sizzling hot breakfast at Cafe Fare in the morning to a brace of fresh pizzas or a flavourful curry from the Dargaville Pizza and Indian restaurant at the close of the day, we’ve got it all covered for field days revellers and working staff. There are sure to be those who take the opportunity for a little nostalgia as well, dropping anchor at Matich’s for real old-fashioned seafood takeaways to be enjoyed either at the table or out in the late summer sunshine. The local RSA are getting into the swing of things as well, delivering hearty dinners in the finest tradition of this Kiwi icon to all the patrons of our biggest rural event of the year. The Aratapu Tavern has gone a little bit country to celebrate the field days, with their usual — and famous — southwestern style menu incorporating the best of local flavours as well. After the big event is over, however, the sounds and tastes of Texas will take a little hop to the east, as the fun of New Orleans Mardi Gras rolls around again. Expect hot jazz music, spicy Cajun and Creole dishes and a party fit for Bourbon Street as this yearly tradition lands in the Kaipara. Finally, there’s something exciting coming in March, with the return of A GREAT FIELD DAYS STARTS WITH

WaterSaver prevents the loss of valuable tank water and potential damage to property

Dargaville chiropractic opens

After spending five years studying his discipline in Australia and then living and working there, Cameron jumped at the chance to return to New Zealand when he heard his friend Dr Jamie Matthews was selling his Dargaville chiropractic business Vital Connections. Originally from a small town, Cameron thought Dargaville would be a ‘cool fit’. So far he has found the community to be very welcoming. “It’s been really good so far — there are some awesome people here and it’s a nice community.” Cameron says it’s important for people to be functioning well all the time. Clients’ attention can vary from a once a week visit to once every six weeks. He said it would be especially important to those working in season on the kumara fields and bending over all the time. Initially he will be commuting to Dargaville, for the three days he is open for business, from Auckland, where his wife is also studying to be a chiropractor. If this is any sign of how the final product will be, people are in for a great show, which is brought together by talented people.” Sharlene Afoa who is also part of the chorus said: “I’m enjoying the rehearsals and the hype with it. Grease is the show to be a part of.” Seasoned little theatre actor Thomas Koloi from Dargaville is playing the lead role of Danny, and Molly Curnow from Otamatea is playing Sandy. Molly has been in many Otamatea Repertory Theatre productions, but

this is her first show at the Dargaville Little Theatre. With three rehearsals per week, “the show is set to be a polished, entertaining and high energy performance,” said Anna. There will be several shows, staged between May 12 and 27. ¢

How to report a crime Understanding the correct procedure when reporting a crime can help police assist the community effectively and quickly and Senior Sergeant Rob Huys wants to make sure everyone in Kaipara knows what to do when a crime occurs. “We have a very capable receptionist at Dargaville Police Station, Margaret Rasmussen, who can deal with people over the desk and phone in the first instance,” he said. “It is important to remember that for urgent matters please don’t hesitate to call 111 so an officer can be at the scene as soon as possible. There was a good example during the weekend when a neighbour reported suspicious activity at an unoccupied house and called police who apprehended four young males for allegedly committing a burglary at a Victoria Street address. “For crimes that occur out of our hours or during

the weekend and are non-urgent, ring Dargaville Police Station straight away and you will be transferred to someone who can help and can take details over the phone. “It saves a lot of time and everything is entered onto our system, which means it can be sorted quickly, and this includes being given a file number which can be useful when dealing with your insurance company,” said Rob. Reporting a crime anonymously is also an option with Crimestoppers. Contact the Dargaville Police Station on 09 439 3400, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or call 111 for emergencies.

Putting safety first The consumer guarantees act and us With nearly 20 years’ experience in the building and civil works industries Annette Pull has had her fair share of compliance situations and now on a dairy farm she is passionate about putting health and safety back on the agenda. Business director Annette traded in her Auckland career for life on an Arapohue dairy farm after meeting her husband and has developed Total Business Compliance since. “I became a dairy farmer seven years ago and was horrified at the penalties farmers were incurring with the new law changes, staff lawsuits and noncompliance. I had to step up - farmers needed my help,” she says. Being involved with serious work related injuries in the past means that Annette understands why it is necessary to try an eliminate all the “nasty things that could happen” in a farm environment. “Since starting up my business I have had customers from the trucking industry, veterinary centres, dairy and beef farmers,” she said. She says farmers don’t want to get to the “blood and guts” stage before realising they need to rethink their health and safety

You may have heard of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, but you may be unsure of how it operates. Parliament protects you and me as consumers by requiring suppliers to refund the purchase price of faulty goods or services, or to repair or replace faulty goods. The law sets minimum standards that businesses have to meet. In a nutshell, the act applies when we buy products or services that are ordinarily acquired for personal, domestic or household use. For such products, the law imposes automatic guarantees. Some of these are that the goods must: • be of an acceptable quality — durable, safe, fit for purpose, free from defects, and acceptable in look or finish; • match a description, sample or model that was shown to you; • arrive on time and in good condition, or within a reasonable timeframe if you didn’t agree on a time; and • have spare parts and repairs available from the manufacturer — unless you were told when you bought the product that these are not available. It is important to be aware that the act may not always apply. For example, it doesn’t apply when you buy products or services privately, such as at a garage sale or off Trade Me, where the seller isn’t

a trading business. If things do go wrong with a product or service, the remedies are designed to be quick, direct and consumerfriendly. Where the problem is minor, the retailer can choose to either repair, replace or refund. If the problem is significant or it can’t be fixed quickly, you have other remedies under the act. One example is that you can reject the product and choose either a replacement of a similar type and value, or you can demand a full refund of the purchase price. The supplier can’t insist that the refund be in the form of a store credit. If you have acquired faulty goods or services and you want to know what your rights are, we would be more than happy to discuss this with you. Three generations of dedication u by Andy Bryenton

It’s a week to celebrate long-standing traditions at Dargaville Ford, as the team gears up to showcase the best of Ford’s line-up at Northland Field Days. Having attended every one of the massive agricultural events since the very first, there’s a new member of the team helping make 2017 even more memorable. New apprentice automotive technician Sam has come on board recently, representing the third generation of the West family to represent Ford in Dargaville. He joins his father Anthony and grandfather, Dargaville Ford boss

Lindsay West, as part of the team keeping the blue oval supreme on west coast roads and farms. It’s a fine Ford tradition to keep up, and stretches back to the founder of the iconic international brand — Henry Ford himself also passed on the tradition of motoring success to his descendants, such as his son Henry Ford Jr, the mastermind of the GT40 and victor of Le Mans. As a trainee in Ford’s comprehensive programme, it will take

Six decades and going strong The Toyota Land Cruiser is an icon of off-road driving — the archetype of the SUV and a machine found in every environment on earth, from burning deserts to thick jungles to arctic tundra. Right now, Toyota are celebrating 60 years since the first Land Cruisers — the venerable 1957 FJ series — came to Australasia. Australia was first to see the FJ, that jeeplike 4x4 with its canvas top and unashamedly military appearance. There are two ways to build a reliable, hard-working utility truck. The first is to come up from the roots of the ute concept — adapting the classic layout of a big sedan and adding a flat deck. The other way is to start at the other end — with an honest to goodness truck. Isuzu is no stranger to building trucks and the big diesel engines that power them. Vast swathes of southeast asia have been built by Isuzu’s heavy haulers, many of which have faced conditions that would crumble lesser machines. That’s why when the Isuzu name appeared on a ute called the D-Max in the not so distant past, it was well worth a look. Those familiar with the tough Bighorn and MU SUVs certainly took note, and a quick pop of the bonnet justified their curiosity. Experience building those big diesel mills has been distilled down into the 4JJ1 turbo diesel — three litres of hightorque combustion armed with modern turbo technology for even more grunt. Just looking at the components of the D-Max’s engine gives one pause; they are visibly bigger and more solidly built than those from other utes in the market. That’s something you feel on the road, with 3.5 tonnes of towing capacity at your disposal. But it’s also something that will pay dividends during the life of the vehicle. Using truck components means that this is a serious workhorse. Big roller bearings and a stainless timing

chain are just a couple of examples. That’s not so say that the D-Max isn’t up for its fair share of adventure, either. There’s a reason this ute is a favourite of hunters, teamed up with the founder of outdoor clothing label Swazi. And there’s no bare-bones approach to

comfort here, either. A well-appointed cabin filled with all the modern gadgets and safety features comes as standard. It’s proof that the world’s largest diesel manufacturer can blend toughness and reliability with comfort and sharp looks, creating a modern masterpiece. ¢

Sheryl Reynard Smith 12.08.83 - 01.03.16 Words can not express how we still and will always feel with the tragic loss of Sheryl, a mother, a wife, a best friend, a business partner and my soul mate. Not a single second passes that you are not in our hearts. We will always love you and never forget you.

Love

Bob, Max and Jack

In Memoriam

Sheryl Reynard Smith 12.08.83 – 01.03.16 Tragically taken. Much loved daughter–in–law of Steve and Kate. Will always be loved and remembered.

Sheryl Marie Reynard Smith 12/08/1983 – 01/03/2016

To my precious darling daughter in heaven. Sheryl Reynard-Smith “A beautiful soul was tragically taken a year ago today, Your loved ones miss you more than words can say. If angels watch over us then we know you are near, For we miss and love you and hold you so dear. As always our dear friend and sister-in-law Always in our hearts. Em, Dion & Forrest xxx

Sheryl Marie Reynard Smith Most of you will say the year has gone fast. For me its gone slow, every hour a slow hour, every day a slow day.

They say there is a reason, they say time will heal. Neither time or reason will change the way I feel. Gone are the days we used to share, but in my heart you’re always there. The gates of memories will never close, I miss you more than anyone knows. I love you and miss you everyday. Till we meet again. Always and forever.

Today 1st March one year ago, we lost our precious darling daughter and very loved special sister Sheryl. Our best friend/soul mate, our rock. Sheryl you are such a talented, beautiful, caring young lady. Such a super funny, loving, awesome mum to Maxy and Jack Jack, your beautiful wee boys of whom we will keep close forever. Very treasured memories are all we have left to hold onto. Forever in our hearts ‘Sweet’, you’re with us every day. No one will ever know or can imagine how broken and saddened we are with our loss.

Love you very much my darling daughter,

You’re truly the best!!!

The lawns never got mowed. The truck never got washed. The kumaras never got packed. The post banger never got used. The boat never went fishing.

Sheryl Maire ‘Sweet’.

Forever in our hearts, till we meet again love.

Sheryl got taken from me in a phone call, a whole 8 words. To all you mums and dads out there, cuddle your kids now while you can. You don’t realise how much you love them till they’re taken from you.

My very loved, very precious, special only daughter. Love Mama Sue.

Till we meet again ‘Bag’ Love ya so much – Dad

But why were you taken from me?

Mama Sue, Dars, Ryan (Pinny) and Scott (Got Got) We love you.
