One body to combat harbour crisis?

A high-powered meeting of minds is working on a plan to place the Kaipara Harbour under one central administration, ending years of fragmented control, to turn the tide of environmental decline The decision was made at a meeting in Kaiwaka last Saturday, which was attended by a who’s who of local government stretching from Auckland to the far North. Called by the Rodney Local Board of the Auckland Super City to discuss the governance of the Kaipara Harbour, it attracted Auckland Mayor, Len Brown, Kaipara Mayor, Neil Tiller, councillors and Chief Executive, Steve Ruru, Whangarei Mayor, Morris Cutforth and councillors and staff, Northland Regional Council chairman, Craig Brown, and Iwi representatives including Margaret Kawharu from Maunga Whakahi and Glenn Wilcox from the Maori Statutory Board. “We were given a wide brieﬁng on the state of health of the harbour in the past and present,” said Kaipara’s West central Ward councillor, Hal Harding. continued on page 3 . . .

Kaipara explores options

Rates strike option still open

The Kaipara District Council’s ﬁnancial woes are best solved by ‘people sorting out their own mess’ according to the Minister for local Government, Nick Smith. With a massive debt of some $85 million dollars, largely brought about by the Mangawhai sewage scheme, and with ﬁnances in further disarray because of illegally gathered rates and District Plan cost blowouts, the KDC would not appear to be an attractive bride. As Mr Smith has said there is no doubt KDC is in a ‘pretty serious pickle’. However, in the search for solutions, and on notice from Mr Smith that it is under the threat of being replaced by a government appointed commissioner if it cannot sort out its own problems, KDC asked to talk to Whangarei and the councils met last week in Dargaville. Whangarei Mayor, Morris Cutforth, said his council was happy to talk things through. That’s one of the good things about the local government sector, we have a lot in common and we do swap notes,” he said. He added Whangarei felt that the government was not keen to force changes, but communities of both districts could lead change if they wanted to. . . . continued from front page

Len Brown also said Auckland was preparing a comprehensive environmental report on all its waterways including the Kaipara. “But the overall outcome was that a committee representing each organisation present will now work towards the creation of a single Kaipara Harbour authority.“ New Zealand’s largest harbour and fish nursery to nearly the entire west coast snapper stocks was declared as heading for ecological crisis a year ago after a scientic review for the Northland Regional Council. It said the harbour was in significant environmental decline with its 640,000ha catchment stretching from Waipoua forest to the Auckland west coast Fish and shellfish stocks were declining, sedimentation increasing because of poor water quality and increasing resource use and development pressure. Lack of integrated management and co-ordination was stated to be a major problem. Currently the harbour is overseen by Auckland, the Kaipara District Council, Northland Regional Council, the Department of Conservation Northland and Auckland, and the Ministry of Fisheries.

The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association executive has met with the Chief executive of the Kaipara District Council, Steve Ruru, and after a follow-up meeting of the membership, is continuing its call for a rates strike. “Mr Ruru acknowledged that there were many problems, but it seems council is hell bent on ﬁxing their past problems by making us pay for them,” said MRRA chairman, Bruce Rogan. Kaipara District Council is in debt to the tune of $85 million, and a legal report has found some $9.5 million dollars has been illegally collected in rates for the Mangawhai sewerage treatment project. “At our meeting last Sunday, I advocated that residents refuse to pay their rates until the $9.5 million has been clawed back,” Mr Rogan said. Kaipara Mayor, Neil Tiller, said Whangarei ratepayers would not be expected to take responsibility for Kaipara’s $85 million debt in any possible merger. A past option for Kaipara to merge with Rodney, a prospect which found a lot of local favour, was scuppered in 2010 when Auckland’s Super City spread its tentacles north to Wellsford. Another option which has attracted a muted response is from Far North District Council Mayor, Wayne Brown, who proposes Kaipara be carved up between Kaitaia and Whangarei.

“There have been many ratepayers in support of this, with others a little hesitant. So we are going to step up the ﬂow of information, and we are preparing a comprehensive legal explanation of section 60 of the Local Government Act. “A decision not to pay rates has to be up to individuals, so we will be clearly explaining the options. If anything, the ﬁght for justice is intensifying. He noted that similar action has been discussed in other districts, with New Zealand local government debt skyrocketing four fold in recent years.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’. Kauri forest on the Wairoa river, Kaipara, December 1839

Killing off the Kauri by Brian Eastwood

Pillage: Defined in the dictionary as ‘to plunder, to take as spoils’. That definition would be a good fit with the carting away of kauri, rimu and kahikatea from the shores of Kaipara when the saw millers and bushmen came to town. Then the gum diggers arrived and sent away great loads of kauri gum. Those of us who live here in 2012 can hardly imagine how Kaipara Harbour would have looked in its original state if we had sailed through the Heads in 1800. Missionary Samuel Marsden recorded in 1820, ‘The banks of the Wairoa are covered with a thick forest of timber trees of all descriptions, but especially the kauri-pine which is always in the greatest profusion in hilly situations. I am not acquainted with any place in New Zealand where these trees are more plentiful, of greater height and diameter, and of easier access’. Twenty-three years later naturalist and scientist Ernst Dieffenbach saw that ‘. . . the Wairoa riverbank was covered in what is termed light bush — two or three miles back the heavy bush begins. This is a primeval forest,

endless miles of enormous timber trees, girthing ten, twenty, thirty, forty feet and even more, and of startling height. The timber is slowly encroached upon to feed the sawmills’. Austrian explorer Andreas Reischek visited Dargaville in 1879. ‘In the neighbourhood were mighty kauri forests, and a kainga where old Chief Parore was living’. Timber by the millions of feet for furniture and house building was shipped out to the South Island, to Sydney, Melbourne, England and San Francisco. Peak year for kauri logging came in 1900, when 16 million super feet of timber left Kaipara Harbour. Shiploads of the light-weight gum were being carried off. In one two year period, 6,257 tons of gum went to England, Australia and America. It was said that Kaipara air was sharp with the tang of kauri gum and new sawn timber. Local horizons would have been smoky from the bush burning to clear the land. But wiser heads were beginning to worry. Speaking to Auckland Chamber of Commerce in

1884 their president L. D. Nathan said, ‘Referring to this large reduction of our magnificent forests I can not disguise my concern at the neglect of provision for the wants of the future. We are letting the bushman’s axe do its work without utilising the productive forces of nature to replace the kauri tree by others that will mature, say in fifty years. Year by year goes by without our doing anything to fulfill our duty to posterity. I look upon this as a very serious matter’. But nobody took any notice and the carnage carried on. It was not until 1973 that government acted to establish forest protection. It was almost too late. Most of the kauri left standing was in Waipoua Forest, Trounson Park and Coromandel State Forests. When Europeans arrived in Kaipara the clearing of land was needed for settlement. The bonus for Northern Wairoa was a timber and gum industry providing work and wages. We can look back from our times and wonder why the killing of a forest was allowed to happen. Would we have done it any differently?

Classrooms on the harbour Kaipara beaches became classrooms for two days last week, as primary schools took the day off from regular studies to take part in the Sport Northland, Beach Water Safety Have A Go days — one at Kellys Bay on February 22, and at Pahi the following day. There was good weather and a great turnout for Kellys Bay and primary school pupils from Pouto to Te Kopuru and Dargaville “The feedback from the kids and parents was wonderful — a great day and learning curve,” said Sport Northland team leader, Esther HoneMoore. “The two events were hosted in an effort to up-skill our children, teachers and whanau through real life experiences in the sea,” she said However, it was wet above and below at Pahi the following day, when pupils from Matakohe Paparoa, Maungaturoto, Tinopai, and Ruawai primary schools, turned out with a bevy of parents in tow, to try snorkelling, paddleboarding, sailing, kayaking and waka ama. “We are working collaboratively with our communities to safely utilise our coastal environment and for children to experience swim and survival skills,” said Esther. “It was very wet, but very successful and again parents and children alike said they got a huge amount from the day.” The children rotated in groups between different instructors for different water experiences. “Each session catered for up to 15 students who experienced a variety of swim and survival skills that can be practised and applied in the future,” said Esther.

Consumers receive bonus from Northpower Northpower is handing out $5.3milllion to the company’s owners — the consumers connected to its electricity network — effective immediately. Northpower Chairman Warren Moyes says this means the Whangarei-based lines company will hand out credits of between $35 and $145 across the Whangarei and Kaipara Districts. “A credit described as a Northpower Line Holiday will appear on March power accounts issued by electricity retailers operating on Northpower’s network,” he said. The credits, which are based on energy consumption shown on individual power accounts for the past 12

months, will be distributed to all consumers connected to the Northpower electricity network at midnight, 21 February 2012. Consumers who used between 2,000 and 15,000 units over the past year will receive a $95 credit, those who used less than 2000 units, $35, and those greater than 15000 units, will receive $145. Included in the $5.3 million is a $700,000 industry rebate to consumers. Northpower consumers recently received a distribution from the Northpower Electric Power Trust. The line holiday is in addition to that distribution.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic The Ruawai Lions are holding a teddy bears’ picnic at Ruawai Primary School on Sunday, the 4th of March, starting at 11.30am. It is a great opportunity for young and old to bring along their favourite teddy bear and join in a great day of fun. “There is the opportunity for families to either bring along their own picnic or they can support Ruawai Primary’s Camp Millenium fundraising and purchase a sausage sizzle and drink,” said Ruawai Lions’ secretary, Dorothy Simpson. “There will lots of fun, games and prizes. The Lions club has held many teddy bears’ picnics, with last one held at the Whenuanui Domain in Robertson Road in 2009.

Exhibition for hospice An exhibition of stitching and poetry in partnership with Hospice Kaipara has been brought from Oamaru to the The Kauri Museum. “This exhibition, called Echoes, created a lot of interest in Oamaru at the Forrester Gallery last year and staff at The Kauri Museum were so moved that they enquired if it was possible to bring it up to Matakohe to share it with Hospice and Northland people,” said museum curator, Bet Nelley. “We really thought that sharing this exhibition with others may help those who have suffered loss and were so delighted that Hospice Kaipara thought so as well.” The exhibition was created by an art technology teacher Sue McLean, who is originally from Warkworth, and depicts a mother’s grief following the death of her 18-year-old son. “The catalogue that supports this exhibition has text in poetry written by Sue’s daughter Rhiannon. Five dollars from every catalogue sold will be given to Hospice. “Sue and Rhiannon will be coming to Matakohe and on April 10 will host an afternoon tea where they will give a presentation, with proceeds to Hospice Kaipara. Get out on the water for your volunteer ﬁreﬁghters

There’s nothing better than getting out on the water to catch the big one — except when you know that you’re going fishing for a good cause! Most keen anglers don’t need any excuse to pack their rod and reel for a relaxing day of fishing. But when the Wellsford Volunteer Fire Department stand to gain much-needed funding from a little bit of work with the old hook line and sinker there’s every reason to get amongst the action. That’s just what’s happening this March, as anglers from around the mid-North head down to the inaugural Wellsford Volunteer Fire Department Beach, Boat and Kontiki Fishing Tournament. Mowing the lawn and painting the house will have to wait for a weekend on the 9th and 10th, as every fish caught is not only a potential prizewinner, but also goes into a huge auction to raise money for the local firefighting heroes of the volunteer brigade. Starting from 12 noon Friday anglers can cast their hooks from boats, from the beach, or (in an interesting twist) with the aid of kontiki style ‘torpedoes’ in a bid to land the big one. It’s all on until 3pm Saturday, when the last of the catch is weighed and the big auction begins. There are considerable bragging rights at stake along with the awards for the biggest fish caught, but the real satisfaction must come from two very important things. Firstly, the chance to get out in the great Northland outdoors for some of the world’s best fishing. And secondly, the chance to give back a little to the men and women who give up their time and sometimes risk their lives to keep the Wellsford area fire safe. If you’d like to be in with a chance to win, or if you’re just a civicminded angler looking for a great excuse to book a weekend behind a rod and reel, check out the posters in Wellsford’s main street, or pop in to visit the Sports and Leisure store on Rodney St (opposite the ASB bank) or Hunting and Fishing Warkworth. Farming pioneers on video A video documentary which traces the history of the Albertlanders journey from England to the shores of the Kaipara Habour, in 1862 and their struggle to build a new life on the land from Wellsford through to Ruawai, will be premiered at Easter. ‘The Albertlanders — Tell it to the generation following’ is an hour-long programme now in production after ﬁnal location shooting around the Kaipara last weekend. The programme is narrated by Paul Campbell, author of the recently released book, Images from Albertland, and tells the story of a man taking his two ‘granddaughters’ on a road trip through their family history. “Exhausting, but a heck of a lot of fun,” was Mr Campbell’s verdict after some 200 kilometres to various locations in Auckland, and through Riverhead and the Kaipara to Port Albert and environs. The DVD will complement the book, which features the amazing historical photographs of pioneering Kaipara farmer, Harold Marsh, telling the story of his own forebears and the other settlers, who arrived in pre-camera days, now recorded only in letters, diaries and contemporary drawings. After being premiered at the Albertland 150th anniversary celebrations at Easter Weekend, the DVD will be available for sale. The new Silver Edition of Images from Albertland, will be released for sale at Stand 175 at the Northland Field Days.

A double-life delight Paparoa service station proprietor, Nicolette Eddy, leads a double life, and embraces the task with enthusiasm. On the one hand, she’s pumping gas and checking the oil and water at her Northland garage — and on the other, she’s leading the ﬁght to ease the way for cancer sufferers in Northland and Auckland. Nicolette and her husband John took over the Paparoa Gas pumps last November, providing a family business that also allowed her to commute to her other job, as trust and foundations fundraising co-ordinator with the Auckland Cancer Society. “In effect, I make all the applications for funding on behalf of both Northland and Auckland Cancer Societies,” Nicolette said. “I am in Auckland several days each week working out of our lodge just a few hundred metres from Auckland hospital. This is where we are able to offer accommodation to cancer patients, many of whom travel down from Northland for their treatment. Having somewhere to stay can be a tremendous load off their shoulders. For myself, I have a grannie ﬂat at the home of my daughter and son-in-law while I’m down there working. “And as far as the commuting goes — well it doesn’t faze me. Usually I travel back up Highway 16, and once I am in sight of the beautiful Kaipara, it’s a breeze.” When not raising funds for cancer sufferers, Nicolette has been helping John with plans to re-vamp the Paparoa service station. “We are closing for a day on March 12, for

the installation of modern new pumps,” she said. “And the whole place will be getting a facelift over the next few weeks — a new fence is going up along with a lick of paint here and there.” The renovation though is not the only event coming up. “Northland will be hosting the Relay for Life on March 17, at Otaika Park in Whangarei and there will be a number of Kaipara teams taking part. This is a remarkable overnight team event to raise money for the Cancer Society, as a community, acknowledge cancer survivors, remember loved ones and also ﬁght back against this disease.” Contact Paulette Scrooby, northland@relayforlife.org.nz.

Water a theme for family company Jeanette and Andrew Wade of Wade Concrete are excited about getting amongst the action at this year’s Northern Field Days “Farmers from all over the north and even further afield can view our products and range,” says Jeanette. “We also get a feel for what type of products are in demand and what might sell better than others — it’s marketing and research rolled together in a great atmosphere. It’s never about what you sell on the day — it’s about exposure to returning or potential clients.” Andrew, a former plumber and farm worker started up the company 21 years ago when he saw there was a need for concrete products in the market. “He came home one night and said he was going to make concrete farm troughs,” laughs Jeanette. “I voiced my concern — after all I wondered just how many troughs you could sell — when you consider they last for more than 20 years I couldn’t see they needed to be replaced often.” Support for the couple came from local icon and Dargaville businessman — the late Tom McKay, (the then current owner of the premises). His generosity gave them a go at getting established when banks refused to loan the fledgling business start-up capital. “Andrew made the first 100 troughs by himself — with a pile of sand, metal and cement and a little concrete mixer,” says Jeannette. Every six or seven years Andrew comes up with a new product to meet changing demands such as the portable concrete silage feeder he and Te Kopuru farmer Ben Zwaans designed and built. It has been popular with farmers. They also make and sell a number of products such as store traps for cowshed, cattle stops, septic tanks, water tanks, culverts

and various sizes and shapes of paving stones and offer numerous plastic and alkathene pipes and fittings. It’s a family business with Swiss-born Jeanette managing the office and 16-year-old son Daniel helping out during the school holidays. For the last 10 years foreman Mark Russell has also been there to keep things running smoothly — a definite benefit to the company. An icon upgraded The Ford Falcon is one of those ubiquitous brands which is interwoven with life in New Zealand — like Weetbix, Wattie’s tomato sauce and jandals in the summer, the rumbling purr of one of Ford’s big cruisers is, to use the vernacular, ‘Kiwi as’. “Freemasons are ordinary men 18 years and over, of all religions and backgrounds, who share a concern for human values, moral standards, respect for the law of society and the rights of individuals, said local lodge member, Paul Udall. “We run retirement villages in the Kaipara and across New Zealand. There are two in Dargaville. We have supported a range of organisations through our Dargaville Lodge which is called Pono Lodge. These include; Paws and Claws, Dargaville Medical Centre, the Skin Clinic’s upgrade, Kaipara Community Pool’s wheelchair and CPR machines and TVs in the Dargaville Hospital. “We support many of our community resources and a typical lodge could have hourlyrate workers through to managing directors, professional people, teachers, church people and sportsmen. “As a young person several of the key people at my local church, people I looked up to, were Freemasons,” Mr Udall said. “My ﬁrst manager was a Freemason. My ﬁrst sales manager, was again another Freemason.

These were the seeds being sown. Much later in life I was the chairman of the local school board and someone asked me if I wanted to join and the seeds germinated. “Twenty-ﬁve years later I’m still a member and I enjoy the challenge. Lodge meetings are once a month and that is the only time some people spend. However, if you decide to take a more active role, time spent on Freemasonry is entirely over to the individual.” He added that Freemasons were seeking new members. “We need your support. We need members to keep our activities vibrant.”

Holistic health for animal and humans Natural health enthusiast Sasha Clark is enjoying learning about homoeopathy — not only for humans, but also for animals The Dargaville local took over the local natural health store, Health Options, from previous owner Pam Baldwin last September, and is currently studying animal homeopathy — the use of natural remedies in veterinary medicine. Sasha, who holds a degree in psychology and anthropology from Massey University, is also a qualiﬁed Reiki (Japanese stress reduction technique) practitioner, and will be a ﬁrst time exhibitor at this year’s Northland Field Days. She wants to use her new-found homoeopathy skills to help the Kaipara and Northland community, caring for animals as well as people.

“I want to practice both animal and human alternative health because I’ve always been interested in and had a preference for natural health,” she says. She likes the concept of being able to help a number of ailments by boosting the body’s natural defenses and bringing them back into balance. The rural scene has always featured in Sasha’s life in some way and this coupled with a love of animals has led to her interest in their total, balanced health. She is looking forward to stocking a range of natural and homoeopathic remedies and products geared towards farmers and their livestock needs. For example there are many homoeopathic products for cattle that have a ‘no milk withholding period’ — great for dairy herds.

Yep, me Billy BC here again and it’s that tima year. Bin left in charge ofa farm again wile the boss and Sharlene shoot thru ta tha Feel Days at Dargaville. Yer wood reckin that seeing tha Feel Days is about farmin’, that yer’d want ta have tha reel workers in tha show. Like me. Ok, so they got sum poncy sheep dog displays an’ that. Y’no, Bosses whistles and wave ‘is arms ana dogs runs this way ‘n that showin’ how cleva they is? Blimmin’ showponies eh? Wen I wanta get stock movin’ — they moves were I want, Beleeve it. A cupla nips wiv me nashers ona hindlegs gets’em headin’ fer tha yards, or the paddicks. But no. Us reel werkers not alloud ata Feel Days. So lika last few years, — I am home alone! Well, not strikly true this year. Ya see, tha Boss’ girfren Sharlene felt sorry for me after las’ year. That wuz wen The Boss tied me ta me kennil drum wiv a sack inside for me bed, a bloody great bucket ‘a water and most of a roast leg of lamb ta gnaw on. Sharlene reckin that “wuz abit bloody poor Deah,” and this year she’s got her Mum ta stay on tha propitty too. So, ‘steada being ina kennil on me own wiv me bone, Sharlene’s Mum’s lettin’ me stay ina house! Yup. She chucked an’ ole blankit on a couch’ for me ta lie on, an we got a reel good numba goin’. Las’ nite, she did a kasserole dinna. She did sum muttin chops all simmid in gravy, wiv mash spuds. An’ its not lika Boss, or even Sharlene (wen a Boss is looking anyway) an’ I gets ta get tha leftovers. Her Mum give me me own plate fulla tucka, an’ wiv Tux bikkies ona side! We has our feed wile she wotches Koronashin Street ona telly. But, hey, thas not all. Afta tha kasserole, we had some blimmin’ ice-cream! Woo-hee! Boss can eat ‘is hart out eh?

Same ole — Boss get’s ina beer tent wiv his mates, wile Sharlene’s shoppin’ and visitin’ her mates. Next thing yer know he’s gotta farm cheque book out and he’s spendin’ up large on stuff we don’t need, jus’ ta show Sharlene ‘es bin all over tha exhibits.

Come Sunday, the ute’ll be rolin’ up the drive packed with stuff we don’t really need. But, wot, me wurry.? Wot’s that Mum? Choklit cake?. Now I rilly duzzin’t mind if I does, Mum.

High speed broadband tower at Baylys Beach Baylys Beach will be the site of one of 154 new cell towers being built around the country to bring high-speed broadband to rural areas. In the past agri-businesses, and the families of farmers have had to rely on slow dial-up internet, but this leap into the future is set to deliver a world of business, financial and practical opportunities to those who drive our rural economy. Vodafone is contracted to deliver 18 towers by June 30, the end of the first year of the government’s broadband rollout scheme. “The Baylys Beach tower will be a 25-metre monopole, sited at the golf course, providing coverage over an approximate 20–30km square area dependent on the terrain,” said Vodafone CEO, Russell Stanners. Vodafone plan to allow other operators to install their own equipment on the towers in future, opening up competition in the market. Industry sources predict that within the next five to ten years most of New Zealand’s rural hinterland will be covered by broadband, bringing the country closer to town in terms of online banking, shopping and education. Vodafone has already built and integrated five sites in Kumeu, Waitakere, Motueka, Eureka and Puketaha.

Construction at Baylys Beach is expected to begin soon. Build time is only four weeks once the paper process is complete. “Vodafone is actively working with communities and councils to ensure sites are appropriately located,” Mr Stanners added. “The extended coverage is expected to beneﬁt farmers in particular who are heavily reliant on the internet to track milk solid prices and co-operative information.”

New look for Ruawai’s rural hub For the last six years Heather Logue and Trevor Harris have been the people who Ruawai farmers have visited for all their agricultural essentials. Their Ruawai Farm Supplies store has served a vital role at the heart of the farming community, dispensing good advice as well as all the top names in agricultural supplies That’s why when they decided to sell the business Heather and Trevor didn’t want just anyone to move in. “It would have been disastrous for the local community if there was no local supply store here”, said Heather. But it was a matter of choosing a successor who was not just competent, but excellent. “Someone who can get alongside both staff and customers, and get into the community activities that this store is known for.” After careful deliberation Heather and Trevor decided that only one company fit the bill. Kiwi owned and operated, and with a link to the land that comes from having dairy farmers as its prime shareholders, RD1 was the right fit for Ruawai. The distinctive orange and green signage is going up soon, but from March 1 the big store in Ruawai’s main street will officially be an RD1 branch, under the responsibility of manager Shanelle Wray. Both Heather and Trevor are right behind Shanelle as the change over goes ahead — in fact, they’re working together to make sure it’s a smooth process for

everyone involved. Shanelle grew up on Northland dairy farms, and comes to Ruawai from RD1’s big Whangarei store where she was a team leader, having worked her way up through the ranks. This training has given her an indepth knowledge of the agri-business, and she’s ready to take up the challenges and opportunities of managing the new Ruawai store with enthusiasm. That means developing partnerships with local farmers and with other local businesses to really beneﬁt the town and its people, keeping up the strong reputation of community focus which Trevor and Heather fostered during their tenure. Shanelle invites the locals of Ruawai to stop in and say hello from March 1 onwards. Towards the end of the month when the signs are up there’ll be a grand opening party too. She hopes that the 65th RD1 store in the country will prove to be a great help to her customers, carrying on the tradition of being a business run by farmers, for farmers.

‘Queen of the Keyboard’ presents a right royal show Jan Preston has been called the ‘Queen of the Keyboard’ for her outstanding musical skills, and it’s a name she lived up to last Sunday when a near capacity crowd ﬂocked to Dargaville’s Lighthouse Function Centre to hear her play. With able accompaniment from her husband Michael (who carried the beat with drums, the spoons and even a washboard!) Jan soon had the crowd into the swing of things, singing along to a selection of boogie classics and classical pieces given a whole new twist. Against a sweeping panoramic view from the Lighthouse’s windows the boogie and ragtime virtuoso ran through a rollicking repertoire which had feet tapping and hands clapping along with the music. At both half time and full time the crowd rose in a heartfelt standing ovation, and after the show many members of the audience were heard to enquire when Jan will return for a second engagement.

Last weeks race meet was enjoyed by all. Usually held in May, it was brought forward to help out the Avondale Club. The weather held for the picnic crowd, horses and their riders. Plenty of excitement and adrenaline to be had from punters and competitors alike. See you all for next race meet on April 20.
