“Tourism this summer has been very positive across the Kaipara region,” said Dargaville’s visitor information centre manager Sue Taylor. “There has been a wide range of nationalities and ages of visitors with a large variety of budgets including camper vans and cyclists wanting a range of

different types of accommodation. “The Kumara Box and Dargaville Rail Cart adventures are seeing a lot of activity, as are a lot of other ventures in the area.“ Leanne Jacobs from Dargaville Holiday Park and Motels said they have had a big mix of tourists that were really

thrilled with the museum, the beaches and lakes. “Then they would head north to the kauri forest. There were comments on the lack of activity in the township itself and people would like to see it become more active. continued on page 4 …

Students scale the heights New home builds increase

Climbing a giant ladder assembled with poles and rope was a highlight adventure for 21 Dargaville High School students who have just completed a strenuous leadership course at the Long Bay-based Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre.

A building boom in the Kaipara district has seen 246 new dwellings built last year and 723 building consents issued compared to 608 in the previous year. Mangawhai led the way with 172 dwellings built.

 Working together — Dargaville High students solve a transport problem

The students and prefects were accompanied by Year 13 Dean, Rolf Weight, with the aim of enhancing their leadership roles through focussing on team problem solving. “It was an active day, with the students combining to build the giant ladder, and climb under harness to height of some eight to 10 metres,” said Mr Weight. “It had the added difficulty of the rungs becoming wider-spaced the higher the students climbed. “In ABL — for adventure-based learning, they engaged in eight activities which again involved problem solving as a team. Then they took to the sea in a paddle-board course.” The trip was designed to equip the students to carry their ability to work together into effective leadership roles in the coming academic year, and pass on their skills.

Mr Weight has been involved in outdoor education for some 20 years. The MERC centre at Long Bay was created to offer marine based environmental education and outdoor recreational experiences to schools, other not-for-profit organisations and assor ted business and corporate groups. It offers short duration, single day and multi-day courses overlooking the Long Bay-Okura Marine Reserve, Tiritiri Matangi Island and the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. “The students were a real credit to the school and themselves — this was echoed by the MERC staff,” added Mr Weight. “The group became very cohesive as a result of the activities and I am confident that they will become an amazing leadership team this year.” 

“Dargaville had 31 and throughout the rest of the region there were 43. There were eight percent more building consents issued in the last six months of 2015 than in the first six months,” said Kaipara District Council planning manager, Fran Mikulicic. “This shows further strength in building activity over the last six months of the year.“ The area is experiencing the positive effects from people moving from the Auckland region with house sales and new dwellings on the rise. Strong house price growth in Auckland has meant that homeowners have sought to live where property is more affordable. The proximity to Auckland makes the Kaipara one of these areas and this is driving up local house prices. Higher house prices and growing demand provide an incentive to build, and residential consent numbers have risen as a result. The demand for existing houses has also risen and sales in the Kaipara grew during the past six months. Jean Johnson from Ray White

Dargaville said her office was very busy over the holiday period with new people coming into the area. “We put a lot of effort in and had record sales in the month of January. It was our top month in many years. The majority buying are those wanting to settle here, including retirees. There are also investors and the amount of properties for sale is getting low. “Agents across the district were all busy. With a shortage of housing available for sale closer to Auckland, buyers and investors are looking further North.” 

Expanding through success

A great summer for Kaipara

 by Ann Morgan

Funk store B’arch WEAR in the McKay Arcade — Dargaville, was opened by Jonette Bartlett 11 years ago this April. The time has come for expansion and she has been busy renovating her new premises across the way from her original store, still in the arcade.

 The historic Pouto lighthouse is one of the Kaipara destinations tourists visit

“There are a lot of Kiwi’s coming through at the moment. Young families exploring our own country which is good to see.” The Mangawhai Heads Holiday park also experienced a full house. “This summer has been really good — when we are full we are full,” said Noela Gunson. “Despite the dampening in the early part which made it hard it has been positive. Some left their tents up and went home but came back, it was more the wind that affected people. The children made the most of it though, they had fun. We attract 98 percent Kiwi’s but this year we have had a lot

of Swiss, Austrians and French visit. Around April we have a big Germans influx. We find over Christmas it is a good old Kiwi escape.” Pahi beach holiday park manager Julie Dry reports that they had more people this year and although the wind and rain over the New Year affected some they have got busy again. “We are getting lots of European visitors, including French, German, English, Swiss Austrian, Argentinian, Chilean, and people from the Czech Republic. There is a good increase in the international tourists to the area. It is definitely on the increase and great to see.” 

“Opening day is today, February 2 and I am really excited about the move. It is a fresh start for a new year with new beginnings and adventures,” said Jonette. “Business has been great over summer. I am really looking forward to being able to expand the products I have available and the bigger premises allows me to have a larger R18 adults area. I will also be enlarging the range of clothing I get from Australia for the summer period. Jonette says the sales of Electronic cigarettes has risen with customers moving away from cigarettes and being more health conscious. “We are the stockists of the E health, liquid and juice cigarettes and it is good to see people are more conscious of their health and finances and are moving

away from the smoking habit. These cigarettes help whilst you are giving up.” Cr ystals, incense, jeweller y, accessories, caps and a funky range of giftware is also available. “Our Kaipara t-shirts, which I designed, are also very popular and are now available in children’s sizes. Fired up for stair challenge

Casting the line

 by Ayla Miller

Two Dargaville Volunteer Firefighters want to give back more than just their firefighting skills, as they prepare to climb 1,103 stairs in the Skytower, to raise funds for Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

 Dargaville Volunteer Firefighters Saul Marinkovich and Carl Horscroft are preparing for the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge

The men will be donning 25 kilograms of gear on May 28 for the annual Firefighter stair challenge climbing 51 flights along with 850 other participants from all over New Zealand. Carl Horscroft, a volunteer firefighter for 13 years and Saul Marinkovich, serving for three years, put their names forward and have been chosen to represent their brigade. It will be Saul’s first stair challenge and Carl has taken part once before when he was in the Ngaruawahia Brigade, where he trained by running up the Hakarimata’s. “I will start training at the beginning of March because if you start sooner, you peak too early, and will end up burning out before the climb,” he says. The stair challenge will be held three days before Carl’s 47th birthday. Last time he completed the climb in 15 minutes and 17 seconds coming fifth

out of his age bracket and hopes to get a similar time this year. “The rest of the brigade are behind us 100 percent and I hope the community will get on board as well. We are not just representing the fire brigade but the whole of Dargaville.” The pair say they were motivated to put their names forward to raise money for the Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand foundation as “everyone knows of someone who has had it and it could affect anyone of us,” and have set themselves each a minimum goal of $500. To support the local lads visit firefightersclimb.org or by contacting the Dargaville station. Collection buckets will also be placed in stores around town and there will be a raffle organised through the fire brigade offering the men’s labour for a day. 

Chair of Commissioners

This is the first of the articles that I am writing for the Lifestyler in 2016. The last will be in September 2016, for the governance of the Council will change from Commissioners to elected members in October. Council is preparing for the change. There are some key tasks that Commissioners need to complete before their term ends. They include: Appointment of a Chief Executive One of the most important tasks of governing bodies is the appointment of a Chief Executive for the Council. The Council has been fortunate to have the services of Acting Chief Executive, Dr. Jill McPherson, to assist it with transition and capacity building matters. Dr. McPherson will hand over these responsibilities to a new Chief Executive once appointed in about the middle of this year. The recruitment process is underway. Applications for the position have now closed. Commissioners will begin the shortlisting and interview process this month. We are pleased with the list of interested people. Legislation requires Councils to review the management plans for reserves like the Taharoa Domain every ten years. We are in the middle of this process, and expect to have it completed by 30 June this year. The Taharoa Domain is a large reserve, containing the three lakes – Taharoa, Kai Iwi, and Waikare. They are lakes of significant value and beauty. They are a very popular camping and day visitor spot through the holiday period. The Council co-governs the Domain with Iwi. In order to facilitate this process, the Council has a committee consisting of four members, two from Council and two from Iwi. This cogovernance committee has proposed a vision and plan for the Domain for the next ten years. This plan is currently being consulted on. If

you would like a copy of this proposal, check the Council’s website, or email council@ kaipara.govt.nz to get a copy. Submissions can be made on-line or by sending your views to the Council. The submission period closes 4.30pm 22 March 2016. The cogovernance committee with then consider the feedback it has received, and recommend a management plan to the Council. We expect to adopt a final plan by 30 June. Council has been running open days at the Domain over January to explain the proposals. One final day is to be held on 8 February (Waitangi weekend) at Pine Beach. You are welcome to attend. Completing the reorganization of the roading division within Council Those who have followed this column for the past three years will know that one of the changes that Commissioners have made to the management of Council business has been to bring more control back into Council. We are now completing the last major step in this process, by setting up a fully functioning business unit inside Council for the largest part of our business – roading. From 1 July this year, the Council’s contract with MWH for the supply of professional services to Council for roading will come to an end. A recruitment process is now underway to appoint staff with road engineering and asset management skills to the Council. There is also an initiative underway between the three District Councils in Northland (Whangarei, Far North, and Kaipara), Northland Regional Council, and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to share some of the expertise needed in this area. This collaboration will provide a regionally integrated approach to ensure more costeffective and efficient management of our transportation system. It is the start of the New Year. We wish you all the best.

Trail set to surprise

Circus adventures

The new organiser of the Mangawhai Troubadour Trail, Karen Jane, has a background in event management and even worked for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Now she is hard at work already putting together the talent for the 2016 trail which will be run in conjunction with the Mangawhai Walking Weekend.

Soon community members could be experiencing world class juggling acts, contortionists and acrobatics whilst also supporting youth at risk.

 Karen Jane and Maxine MacDonald

Previous organiser Maxine MacDonald has been in charge of the trail for five years and although she has enjoyed her time as a creative director she now feels it is time to pass on the responsibility to Karen. The Troubadour Trail is in it’s eighth year and is a walk open to the community along the shores and amongst the forest at Mangawhai Heads. “The Troubadour Trail would not be possible without the generosity of the bach owners who provide space and power for the performances every year,” says Karen. The walk takes approximately two hours and walkers will be entertained at various stages along the way with

‘troubadour’ type entertainment. In previous years this has included classical music ensembles, a circus act and a magician and although the acts will mostly be kept a surprise, Karen will reveal that she has been on the hunt for a court jester and a performance poet. This year is the Mangawhai Walking weekends 16th year and is expected to bring 2500 people into the area. The Troubadour Trail event is on April 1 at 2.30pm, 3pm, and 3.30pm. Bookings can be made on the Mangawhai Walking Weekend website or turn up on the day 15 mins before the trail time for $10 per person. 

The world famous Cirque du Soleil group will be performing two benefit concerts in Auckland on February 10 and 11 at the Vector Arena for Circability Trust and will hold a special performance of their show QUIDAM for Circus Kumarani on February 12 with 100 percent of the profits going directly to support youth and family programmes. “Circus Kumarani have organised a return bus for people to see the show from Dargaville leaving at 2.30pm and tickets are $25. There will be a one hour stop at Albany Mega Centre for people to go and buy dinner,” said Circus Kumarani board member Kylie Douglas. “We are a community circus for all ages and abilities and work with children

and youth. Cirque du Soleil would have to be one of the most amazing entertainment companies and they really look after the youth. They have gifted tickets so some children who couldn’t afford to go now can.” Cirque du Soleil donates tickets to organizations providing assistance to youth at risk, with 100 percent of the proceeds from ticket sales supporting their work with young people. “It is a great opportunity for people in the area to get together and have a lot of fun. It is always hard to drive down and find parking in Auckland, and the bus trip takes all the hassle out of it. It is a great way to meet others, and have a good time and laugh.” 

Lakes’ day draws crowds More than 200 people flocked to the Kai Iwi Lakes, travelling from near and far to learn more about the unique dune lakes and the wildlife hidden beneath the surface whilst also helping to celebrate World Wetlands Day. “I’m really pleased with how the day went — we had a great turn out and received fantastic feedback. It’s looking like there’ll be another open day in 2017 and we’d encourage anyone that wants to get involved to get in contact with us,” said event co-ordinator Kim Jones. A mixture of locals, campers and people from further North and Auckland gathered at Lake Waikare and for many it was a day of new experiences and learning first-hand about what the lakes offer. Visitors were able to try a variety of free activities such as snorkelling, and experiencing marine reserves and waka ama with Hikuwai o Kaipara Waka Ama Club. The Department of Conservation, Whitebait Connection and the Northland Regional Council demonstrated simple actions to help people minimise the impact they have on the environment. These included always checking clean, dry, equipment between waterways to

Help the emergency services  by Ann Morgan

The importance of RAPID numbers being displayed visibly on rural letter boxes from both directions has been highlighted again this Summer with fire and ambulance personnel frustrated with the lack of numbers displayed, limiting their ability to find properties where help is needed. “It is important to have all RAPID numbers clearly displayed for us to see from the road,” said Tinopai fire chief Allan Crabb. “Over the Summer period we had a few medical call outs and both the fire and ambulance service could not find the properties. “We have been having major problems locating addresses because the numbers are not visible. If we

get to a medical incident before the ambulance we often have our lights flashing up the driveway so they can see where they are needed. With a fire we often see the smoke so have a rough idea where to go.” Mr Crabb says if RAPID numbers do not exist or are not visible from both sides of the road the rescue services lose valuable time. “This makes our

job difficult. Please understand this is for the public’s well being. It takes a few minutes to clearly display and clear around the numbers and it helps if we are needed.” Mr Crabb recommends RAPID numbers are clearly visible on both sides of the letter box and vegetation are cleared away from the area. RAPID numbers are available from the Council.

We’ve had a few queries around cable locates and the need to use the beforeUdig website to request these. It is really important you use this site to log your details and request – for a couple of reasons. If you just approach Northpower for a cable locate, all we can locate for you is existing electricity cables. beforeUdig will also show you Chorus and Council underground services. And in early March, you will be able to access an automated response service where you will receive an email with the cable locate information you require, within 15 minutes of entering your details on beforeUdig – 24/7. And it’s free. It currently takes us up to two working days to manually get information to you and we can only process requests between 7.30am and 4pm. Northland Fieldays – March 3-5 Look out for us at the Fieldays. We’ll again be sharing our site with the Northland Rescue Helicopter team. We will have one of our electric vehicles on display (book a test-drive), you can check our EV highway, plus a celebration of the 100th anniversary of our Wairua Hydro Power Station at Titoki. There will be competitions, giveaways, Jan’s tasty treats once again (if we don’t eat them first!), electrical safety and ultra-fastfibre information – plus free rides in the Northpower bucket truck, to give you the best view of the Fieldays! At first the show was held at Pahi then Matakohe and then the Paparoa School. For the next few years the show moved between these three locations until moving to the grounds later occupied by Cliff’s Hall. Right from the early days, the show has supported the local community and the community has supported it, making it a firm fixture on the Paparoa events calendar.

Over the years the show has seen many changes and it has been due to the associations adaptability that the event has been able to move with the times and still remain popular amongst the young and old, city and country folk. Now the skills that are demonstrated at A and P shows around rural New Zealand are being used less in everyday farm life and shows are often the only time many people will get to witness activities like wood chopping, animal showing and equestrian events. The Paparoa A and P show has always had a well-supported cattle section whilst the dairy section has

been replaced by miniature horses, beef cattle and dairy goats. Team Roping has a well developed arena and are a popular attraction with their rodeo and bull riding events along with the classic cars, shearing competitions and dog agility displays. The indoor section has changed to follow the changing array of skills held by the community such as photography, art and horticulture. However amongst the many changes over the years the spirit of the show has stayed the same and the show remains an important aspect of rural life. 

Preserving rural origins  by Ayla Miller

For the 140th year the Paparoa A and P show will keep agricultural traditions alive with a mix of events ranging from shearing to segways. There will also be an extensive range of food, produce, arts and crafts in the indoor section. Last year saw a rejuvenation for the show and many new ideas and activities were included attracting more visitors, competitors and exhibitors - a trend organisers hope will continue this year. North Kaipara Agricultural Association president Gerard Sullivan says seeing people enjoy themselves on the day makes all their hard work worthwhile. “We are keeping the rural sector traditions alive. To be fair there aren’t many horses on the farms any more. Everyone has tractors or quads and there aren’t many wood choppers any more as everyone uses machines, so skills like that are changing and it’s nice to show everyone where it all started.” There will be the regular events such as equestrian showjumping and dressage, pedigree cattle and dairy goats, wood chopping, shearing, team roping and bull riding. Gerard says with an increase in people moving to the area from Auckland and surrounds, the show is a great way to get people involved in the community and to demonstrate what rural life has to offer. Popular Northland jazz band Red Arrows will provide some ambience throughout

Choosing the country life  by Ayla Miller

Twenty–eight–year–old Helen Glynn, has managed to fit a lot into her life including farming for two months in Missouri, working on the Crafar Farms, and helping to manage a club in Taupo before moving to Matakohe and milking 600 cows in an 80 bale rotary. Despite growing up in the urban part of Taupo, she has always been around animals and worked for a racing stable in Cambridge when she left school. There, her love of animals grew, and that marked the beginning of her career in the farming industry. “Dad drove me up to Rangitaiki for an interview when I was 16 years old and that’s how I got started in dairy farming,” she says. After that she worked for a number of different farms around the area for the Crafar’s until the opportunity came up to spend two months working on a dairy farm in Missouri in the United States. On her return she didn’t want to look at another cow for a while so she helped her mother run a club in Taupo whilst also working for a security company away from the city. After a year, she packed up her truck and moved to Ruawai to stay with a friend before securing a job in Matakohe and settling into Northland life. She says she enjoys milking cows and would one day like to own a farm of her own although admits she isn’t holding her breath. “If the market picks up I eventually want to but it doesn’t look very

doing it to progress in life I’d definitely recommend it. It’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle. You can’t just take it on like a 9–5 job.” 

VALENTINES DAY

11

 by Ann Morgan

Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a celebration observed in many countries around the world on February 14 each year. Donice and Richard Morris own the Aratapu Tavern and now observe many clients at their restaurant enjoying Valentines day, but they too have a story. Donice grew up in Texas in the United States of America and says back home Valentine’s Day is a tradition not many miss. Richard is a born and bred Kiwi from Kamo and met Donice on his Overseas Experience. “Richard worked in the United Kingdom in the oil and gas industry. He then got shipped to Saudi Arabia and from there into the Gulf of Mexico where he was based in Texas,” said Donice. “My business partner and I were at a ‘Women in Banking’ conference. We got bored and went to the hotel bar for a break. Richard was there with his boss who was overbearing and Richard ended

up stepping between us to protect me.” After a game of trivia where Donice and her friend won the game, his boss went home leaving Richard to buy the winners drinks. “The rest is history and we were married four years later,” said Donice. They moved back to New Zealand and now own the historic tavern 7,000 miles from her home. “In America Valentine’s day is a huge event. It is traditionally a hallmark moment, a day you spend with your honey and lavish them with flowers and chocolates or treat them to a meal out to show appreciation for one another. “Our philosophy is to celebrate everything. It is a special day and is lots of fun,” says Donice. 

VALENTINES DAY

Celebration, romance and music With the hottest time of the year bracketed by twin long weekends, it’s no surprise that our local restaurants and taverns are serving up a feast for the senses this February. In a fusion of holidays, the lead up to Waitangi weekend is also Mardi Gras time at the Aratapu Tavern in Dargaville. The popular holiday is associated with the vibrant Creole French and Jazz culture of New Orleans, but in fact originates in late Roman times. The term ‘Mardi Gras’ literally means ‘Fat Tuesday’ in French, referring to the tasty feasts enjoyed by christians before the ‘Carnival’ — in Latin, a term meaning ‘no meat’. Following Mardi Gras, the season of Lent begins for many Catholics, a time of austere, meat and sweet-free meals. Hence the huge blow-out beforehand, we suppose. The Aratapu’s menu includes a wealth of Cajun and Creole cuisine, along with jazz music to complement the taste of exotic spices, seafood, slow-cooked ribs and more! There’s no requirement to fast the day after, either! Across at the Three Furlongs, Kaiwaka, romance is in the air as Cupid’s big day on February 14 is ushered in with style. The refurbished tavern on State Highway One boasts a glorious five-course banquet for couples

— the perfect gift and an elegant date night in one! If you are looking for some musical entertainment this Waitangi weekend, you cannot look past the triumphant return of Fleetwood Mac tribute band ‘Dreams’ to the Northern Wairoa Hotel in Dargaville. Dinner and a show together is the perfect way to appreciate this loving rendition of the 1970s rock legends’ classics. An early

Valentine’s gift, perhaps? With hot weather here to stay, it’s also the right time of year to invite city-dwelling friends over to appreciate the sea breeze and the country ‘good life’. Treat them to a glass of one of our local vintages, a generous fillet of pan-fried snapper from the harbour, and who knows — you might just convince them to buy a home here and settle down! 

AUTO AND MARINE

The sound and the fury by Andy Bryenton

Big, powerful Holden V8s have always enjoyed a deserved reputation for two things. Firstly, a mountain of torque on demand, powering them up to high levels of performance on both road and track. Secondly, the unmistakable rumble and roar of that huge mill under the hood. The new VFII may be the Commodore badge’s parting shot — the reshuffle of GM priorities has seen Aussie factories cut back in a big way. But no matter where the iconic brand goes from here, the latest iteration of that snarling V8 will echo on. In part, that’s due to the 305 kilowatts and 570 Newtonmetres churned out by the 6-litre-plus LS3 engine which graces the space up front. The adage ‘no replacement for displacement’ could have been born under the new Commodore’s bonnet. But the usual symphony of burning petrol and perfectly meshed steel has been tuned like a well-loved Stratocaster guitar by Holden’s techs for this generation, adding a new level of auditory pleasure. Along with a host of other tweaks, the VFII features a bi-modal exhaust, controlled through the on-board entertainment system. Like a trombone blasting the low frequency beat in a big

band, the bi-modal system allows air to exit the pipework under controlled conditions, producing either a refined and quiet burble, or a throaty exhalation which is sure to put a smile on the face of blokes everywhere. Coupled to a clever mechanical sound enhancer which operates at the induction end, this dual punch of audio engineering adds another element to the sensory thrill of driving a big Holden at full noise. In other ways, the VFII is a feast for the senses as well. Brutally styled, intimidating and muscular, the car epitomises the Commodore gene-line. The smell of hot metal, fuel and fresh leather creates its own atmosphere — and we’re sure there’ll be a little tyre smoke as well! The tactile push and pull of G-forces is tamed with a new, fettled suspension setup. As for taste — well, this combo is certain to have petrolheads salivating.

 Building on the success of the VF, the new VF2 Holden adds a bespoke engine roar to its commanding looks

But it’s the sound which will herald the coming of the latest Commodore, and which will linger long after it powers out of sight. Sound tuning is no new art — the black magic of audio wizardry has been

a staple on Ferraris, for example, for some years now. It’s just that this is less a Vivaldi quartet, and more AC/DC at maximum volume. A brutal serenade which matches the car’s potential to thrill. 
