Kaipara crop trials hold promise u by Paul Campbell

A quantum shift in Kaipara’s agricultural outlook may flow from a trial now underway to grow peanuts in the district with test beds planted in three locations — Ruawai, Te Kopuru and in the Kai Iwi Lakes district.

The crop potential, which could see millions of dollars spent on imported nuts redirected locally, was identified in the Kaipara Kai ‘growing Kaipara’s future’ project as a potential new crop for the district. Now with the support of the Kaipara Kai Hub and Farmlands Dargaville, a $91,320 project is led by Picot Productions, makers of Pic’s Peanut Butter, while the Ministry of Primary Industries is contributing more than $59,000 through its Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund. Research expertise is being provided by Plant & Food Research. “It has always felt a little weird to be making an iconic New Zealand product with imported ingredients,” says Picot Productions owner and founder, Pic Picot. “These trials have the potential to make a very real difference to our carbon footprint and redirect the millions of dollars we spend on imported nuts to the Northland, easily my secondfavourite region of New Zealand.” “This is a great opportunity to take what was reported in the feasibility study to the next stage of developing and producing a new crop in the district,” said Kaipara Kai Hub manager, Matt Punter. “If successful, peanut farming could bring new employment opportunities to the district. Sites have been selected based on soil type and the environment, as soil temperatures of around 18 degrees are ideal.”

p Peanut butter maker, Pic Picot (left) and Declan Graham from Plant & Food inspecting peanut growing trials in the Kaipara

“The window for getting the peanuts in the ground and harvesting them is small,” says business manager science at Plant & Food Research, Declan Graham, who is managing the project trials. Peanuts at the Kaipara test sites were planted in late October and are expected to be ready for harvest within 16 to 20 weeks. Spanish Hi Oleic peanuts, which have smaller kernels and reddish-brown skins, have been identified as the most appropriate cultivar for local conditions. “This type of peanut is most widely used in confectionery and snacks, as well as peanut butter production,” said Mr Graham. “Their high oil content makes them ideal for crushing.”

In 2015, Pic’s Big Toaster Tour visited Dargaville en route from Bluff to North Cape and Mr Picot says they received an unforgettable welcome. “We were treated like long lost whanau,” says Picot. “We got a lot of attention at local tourist attraction the Kumara Box, sold every last jar we had at the Friday market, and were presented with two 50-year-old cans of toheroa soup. I can think of nothing finer than to help the community establish a new industry.” MPI investment programmes director, Steve Penno, says MPI is excited to be involved in a project that could lead to a new industry in New Zealand and help boost the local economy.

p An enthusiastic group of 30 people gathered at the new Baylys Beach Community Centre for the first of a series of drumming workshops last week, organised by local musician Josie Scott. “We had a fun, challenging time learning some tricky rhythms,” says Josie. “Everything was put together and played through to a small but enthusiastic audience made up of community members, just before the end of the workshop.” The drummers ranged from people with no experience at all, limited experience and many years of drumming. Both Josie and the tutors say the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. February will see round two, with a special guest drum tutor from Ghana in West Africa.

p Despite not having resource management consent or building permits, Lifestyler House has new neighbours. They built and moved in all on the same day, and it was quite fascinating watching them move in. There was a lot of ‘toing and froing’, which caused quite a buzz in the Kaipara Lifestyler office. Our staff spoke to an experienced apiarist who advised that the swarm could not be moved but posed no threat to humans so long as they were left to their own devices.

Jaques’ new owners

Celebrating our circus u by Andy Bryenton

u by Ann van Engelen

Ant and Jess Pedersen are the new owners of Jaques Four Square in Kaiwaka, relocating from Tauranga in November to take over from Greg and Paula Jaques.

Circus Kumarani steps up with entertainment and fun to brighten up many of Kaipara’s local events, from market days to the forthcoming river festival and A&P shows. New manager, Tania Whetu, shares the group’s creative vision.

“Jess and I owned the Four Square at the Lakes in Tauranga. We sold that to move to Kaipara with our two children Ruby and Harry,” says Ant. “The store will always be known as Jaques Four Square. You can’t change 95 years of family and area history. We feel very privileged to continue the Jaques family legacy and don’t want to see the work the family has accomplished over the years lost. We also want to keep supporting the community as they did.” Ant says he hopes Greg and Paul are enjoying well-deserved time off. “I am sure they enjoyed having Christmas off and relaxing after so many years of hard work. The community has been unbelievably welcoming and supportive of us. We get the sense of a really strong community spirit being newcomers to the area. “We have kept all Greg and Paula’s staff and have hired a few extras. In time we would like to enhance the store and maximise the shopping experience for our customers. “A Four Square in many respects is the heart of the community, and we can make a genuine difference in people’s lives through our customer service. We are looking forward to many positive years in Kaiwaka.

Circus Kumarani got its start in 2003, promising and delivering circus for all ages and abilities. Tania came to the top job in the charitable, not-forprofit creative trust from a background in community event management. She holds a degree in genetics and has experience working in preschools, as well as teaching circus arts to primary and secondary school children. The choice to move to Dargaville was partly due to her partner hailing from this part of New Zealand, and partly because of the opportunity to helm the Kumarani organisation. “Dargaville has been a friendly and welcoming town,” says Tania. “It’s great that there are existing community relationships with Circus Kumarani and a lot of goodwill. Of course, the aim is to build new ones, too, and to invite those who have passed through here, and who have fond memories, to come back.” That’s the kind of ethos which has seen the growth year-after-year, of the Northland Circus Festival, hosted by Kumarani. “The event returned from January 8 to 10 this year for three days of workshops, ground and aerial skills, arts and creativity, from beginners to

Polocrosse double for northland u by Andy Bryenton

Northland’s young polocrosse riders have dominated with a double victory at the recent nationals, with local equestrian athletes featured in the winning Northland team. “Northland took two junior teams and two under-21 teams down to Otorohanga to compete this weekend just gone,” says polocrosse correspondent and supporter Rhonda Zielinski-Toki. Rhonda’s family members Akaysha, Fern, Liam and Kyla all took part. “Our Junior 1st team under 16 year olds won the NZ Junior Title for the fourth consecutive year, while the under-21 team played the infamous Central Plateau team in their final match thrashing them 29–5.” It was a big day for the sport, p Northland’s triumphant polocrosse teams — both juniors and under-21 athletes excelled in national which was hosted in Kaipara competition, with Kaipara riders in key positions District for 2020’s nationals by the Blackwood family, also keen proponents sport’s governing body looking ahead of polocrosse both on the field and on to fresh international competition the sidelines. Focussing on Covid-19 u by Paul Campbell

With the focus firmly back on the Covid-19 pandemic after transmission outside of quarantine facilities, until a significant majority of people in the community have been vaccinated, all New Zealanders live with the risk of community transmission in their locality. That’s the advice from Dargaville Medical Centre manager, Judy Harris, who says the recent incidents highlight how that risk can become a real threat to a community at short notice. “Frontline healthcare workers require a high level of vigilance in all interactions with people with symptoms that potentially could carry that virus,” Ms Harris said. “Of course, there are a number of other viruses that give similar symptoms, but because we can never be 100 per cent certain, Dargaville Medical Centre staff have a process to quickly identify self-presenting patients who are a higher risk. “The recent Covid threat in Kaipara makes it more clear to us that at DMC, we must maintain our vigilance

The latest from the Kaipara Kai Hub team The Kaipara Kai Hub provides on-the-ground support that enables land to be used to its best potential. The Hub is managed by Northland Inc, and is part of Kaipara Kai, one of four KickStart projects led by Kaipara District Council and funded by the Provincial Growth Fund. Since our last update, the Kaipara Kai Hub team has been busy managing crop trials, engaging with local growers looking at crop diversification, and supporting local projects to kick off. The trial site at Te Roroa’s Kai Iwi farm is looking lush. At that site there are three new varieties of squash, two new varieties of sweetcorn and the nowfamous peanuts, all in full growth. Unfortunately the soybean plots were discovered by a band of local rabbits, but this is the reality of doing trials - we learn what to prevent next time around! Harvest of the trial crops is due around March and we are planning a field day to share the results and learnings with the community. A He Maara Kai programme, led by Māuri Orā ki Ngāti Whatua Charitable Trust commenced this month with a wānanga at Naumai marae. This was made possible with the support of the Kaipara Kai Hub team and the Ministry for Primary Industries Community Hub fund. The Northland Field Days are coming up in March. We will be there and plan to host a series of guest speakers and panel discussions about the mahi taking place in Kaipara and future opportunities. The Hub building in Ruawai is temporarily closed for renovations until further notice, however the Hub team is still working and can be reached via the contact details on our website kaiparakaihub.nz.

Learning hub closes u by Andy Bryenton

After 21 years of assisting Dargaville people in learning workready skills, Te Roroa Learning Assistance (TLA) is bowing out for 2021, with many of its services taken up by other organisations.

p End of an era — Te Roroa Learning Assistance may have closed, but its programme of education goes on, the load shared by many other groups to continue helping locals

Long-serving founding member and leadership figure of TLA, Janet Te Rore, says that the decision was made by the board to cease activities gracefully rather than reach a position where services they provide needed to be shut off without forward planning. A combination of factors led to the decision, including the difficulty of securing grants for funding in the postCovid landscape. “We took the initiative to wind up operation on our terms. Hence, we have been able to engage with other groups to take over many of our core programmes,” says Janet. “This way there’s nobody left disappointed, and we know that

those looking to gain new skills are in good hands.” One example of this positive shift is People Potential picking up the driver education aspect of TLA’s operations, and all driver mentors from Maungaturoto across to Dargaville staying on. “People Potential has always been community-minded; that was their roots, and we’re happy to see them take over this part of TLA’s programme. It’s the same with many of our other literacy and learning programmes.” TLA was initially set up purely for literacy services and became perhaps the most well-known facet of Te Roroa iwi’s community engagement. ¢

Investors moving now u by Andy Bryenton

Property investors outnumbered those moving house for the first time since 2016 in the final quarter of 2020. What does this shift mean for the Kaipara market? In December 2019, when new rules for landlords, including the end of no-cause 90-day evictions, were floated, some investors were quoted as saying that they would sell up and leave the market. ‘Landlords looking to sell up over proposed changes to rental rules’ read one headline of the time. Predictions were made that a rental housing shortage would become a crisis. However, despite new rules taking effect on February 11, the new data from analysis specialists CoreLogic shows that investor demand has surged back to 2016 levels. It’s prompted speculation that further intervention by the government and regulators might be needed to rebalance buyer activity. Furthermore, CoreLogic’s senior property economist Kelvin Davidson says that there’s a precedent for the government doing just that. “The last time that mortgaged investors had a market share near this high was 28% back in the third

quarter of 2016 when the Reserve Bank imposed a 40% deposit requirement. While we’ve already seen the Reserve Bank move to reinstate loan-to-value ratio ‘speed limits’ at 30% from March 1st, the question is, will this be the end point? We think a move to 40% is possible if investor participation continues to push higher.” Davidson says that debt to income ratio caps and an extended bright-line test, above and beyond five years are not out of the question. However, the ‘nuclear option’ of property politics, a capital gains tax, remains out of the discussion. Locally, real estate professional Jill Powell of First National Roper and Jones agrees that investor activity is high, but not at the fever pitch seen in Auckland. “Here in the Kaipara, even in our smaller towns, investors are buying, but they are also taking advantage of professional property management services to secure their investment.”

Recycling crates reduce waste

u by Andy Bryenton

Two years ago, Kaipara District Council asked the community about the way rubbish and recycling were collected and found there is appetite for change. “The survey drew a strong response,” says the Waste Minimisation Lead for KDC, Donna Powell. “People are really passionate about rubbish and how we treat our environment.” People asked for easier systems such as bins instead of using bags. The team found other councils provide recycling crates, which has reduced the amount of household waste that goes to landfill. p Kaipara District Council will be consulting on a proposal to provide recycling crates “Crates make it easier for people so they are more likely to recycle.” The KDC survey also received be bundled separately. They would be collected kerbside or from dedicated requests for wheelie bins. “Other councils found that wheelie collection points in rural areas. “Consultation will be open from bins actually increased the amount of March 1 to April 1 and accompanied rubbish that goes to landfill.” In March, Kaipara District Council will by ‘drop-ins’ in your local community be consulting on a proposal to provide where you can ask questions. You recycling crates as part of its Long Term will also be able to talk with us Plan 2021–2031. The proposal is to online in two virtual meetings we provide two crates, one for glass and are holding. Dates and times will be one for plastic and cans. The nine friends set out from the top of the nation earlier in the week. They made their way down through the Waipoua Forest on Tuesday, headed for the Burt Munro Motorcycle Rally in Invercargill next month. The group’s name is a play on words, referencing their scooter of choice, the Mod-era Italian Vespa, capable of “reaching the speed limit so long as you’re in town,” according to one rider. Fellow Vesperado Rosco Pennell agreed that the pace is leisurely, but the cause they ride for is significant. “We’re attempting to travel the length of New Zealand on the back roads, staying at the historic taverns and pubs

along the way. As the idea for the ride took shape, we realised that it could be a good fundraiser, so we’re collecting for Hospice along the way.” This gesture is made all the more personal. One of the group of long-term friends taking part has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is receiving treatment even as the mission goes ahead. One of the scooters used for the ride is up for auction on Trade Me to help raise even more donations. Fronting up for the Hospice cause has seen “incredibly generous” donations pour in, according to the group of nine riders and support crew. ¢

Arapohue A&P Show The view from Arapohue u by Andy Bryenton

As the finishing touches are put to the 2021 Northern Wairoa A&P Show, association president Richard Alspach has been thinking about the importance of this time-honoured event, which brings a small rural community into the spotlight and the wider community together. “As we set about planning for this year’s show, it struck us that a lot has happened since our last show,” says Richard, just a week or two from opening the gates for what has become an annual tradition. “Not the least of which has been the shutdown because of Covid, and the country’s continued isolation.” He says that one of the benefits of the shutdown is that the rest of New Zealand has found a fresh appreciation of the rural sector. That reflects positively on the communities where our farming

families reside, and the businesses who support their endeavours. Media coverage of matters rural has swung around to the positive. To quote Richard “the farmer-knocking machine is back in the garage. That’s good, so let’s celebrate what and who we are.” That means celebrating our farmers achievements, the skills of a multifaceted and fascinating business, and the hard-won abilities of local animal breeders, shearers, craftspeople, horticulturalists and more.

“This year sees the return of cattle competitions. With the M bovis programme showing good results, and our understanding of the disease much better, we can reinstate the showing of cattle.”

Arapohue A&P Show Beyond that, it’s business as usual. After an absence of more than a decade, dairy goats are making a comeback too. Always popular with the public, it’s expected the full range of classes to be on display. The horses will once again provide a focal point for the show and provide continuous activity. There will be five rings going at once, including the always popular miniature horses. With the days of race meetings at Dargaville well and truly over, the only place the public can see these beautiful animals in the flesh, without actually owning one, is at an A&P show. Take the time to watch them for a while, and marvel at the intelligence, discipline and power of Arapohue’s equine contingent. “Once again, thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Grass Roots Foundation, we are able to offer a range of family-friendly sideshows and rides for a gold coin donation,” says Richard. “This has proved to be a very popular initiative.” Circus Kumarami will be there to entertain, along with, face painting, a display of farm animals, music from strolling buskers and an array of food and drink stalls for refreshments. There will be a chance to test your mettle at old-fashioned rural games; the tossing of the sheaf, the gumboot throwing and the tug-o-war will be hotly contested.

SADDLERY Proud sponsors of both Arapohue & Paparoa Shows

Teams of six can register on the day, and there’s prize money up for grabs for the winners. However, as Richard opines, some of the best sights of the show are indoors out of the sunshine. “Do call into the hall and have a look at the indoor exhibits,” he says. “The committee believes that our show has one of the best indoor sections north of Auckland. It is a truly inspiring display of local talent. A lot of the skills on display were essential survival skills not so long ago, and as the experience of this last year has shown us, they could be again!” The Young Farmer competitions, for both children and teens (4–8 and 8–13) is also back for 2021. Teams of two will tackle new tests of farming skill and knowledge. Once again there’s no entry fee, encouraging tomorrow’s local farmers to step up and vie for some generous prizes. These are not the only rural athletes contesting on the day. The Northern Wairoa A&P is a proud participant in the ANZ Northland Shearing competition. Richard and the NWA&P committee say that the response from the local business community in 2021 has been very pleasing indeed. “The committee is both humbled and thankful for this ongoing support. “It’s year nine in a row, and the event is getting bigger and brighter each time,” says event manager Olly Knox. “I’m super excited to be able to say we got this far, and look toward a great lineup for 2021. Over the years everyone involved with TokaFest has been blown away by the level and enthusiasm of local support, which have made the festival a local tradition.” This year’s selection of artists is eclectic and funky, spanning genres as disparate as acoustic folk rock, reggae, drum and bass and experimental sounds from all over New Zealand and the world. There will be other surprising art forms on stage too, not the least of which are the circus skills of Circus Kumarani. “Each year we try to book a diverse range of acts, lift the production values, and deliver a colourful and engaging show that’s great fun for all ages,” says Olly. “You can’t get more entertainment for just $10 anywhere else!” He also praised funding agency Creative Communities for providing ongoing support of the festival, citing this contribution as a major aid in the development of Tokafest throughout the

Dementia unit opening set

The award winning Kauri Museum Guardians of the kauri story, past, present and future

u by Paul Campbell

The doors at Maungaturoto’s multimillion-dollar dementia unit development are expected to ‘open for business’ in June, the culmination of stage one of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust’s extended plan to develop the Riverview Rest Home’s facilities. “We are looking at a June opening, and this will be a community celebration VIP event for all those who have worked so hard fundraising and otherwise supporting this project,” said trust cochair, Graham Slatter who took Lifestyler on a tour of the facility as the building nears completion. “We will certainly be asking former MPs Shane Jones and Winston Peters along to mark the occasion because they played a major part in securing Provincial Growth Fund money as New Zealand First in government. “That money set the seal on construction getting underway after massive community events that saw dollars roll in.” Mr Slatter emphasised that fundraising will be a continuing facet of the trust’s project, which will include rest home expansion leading to an eventual 24/7 hospital facility. Among guests at the opening will be local funding stalwart, Albie Paton whose The Den second-hand emporium

in the old Scout hall in Bickerstaffe Road has contributed more than $160,000 towards the $3.9 million project, which will see 14 units for dementia patients. Those units are modern, light and air-conditioned with underfloor heating and flow in a semi-circle pattern to a large lounge and dining room, which is supplied from a commercial kitchen installation that can provide meals to the wider rest home.

Mr Slatter pointed out an unexpected expense added to construction when a major fire pump had had to be installed to comply with regulations. “We are already looking to more fundraising events and the ladies who organised our very successful Dahlias for Dementia garden tour last year are now looking at a similar ‘Roses for Rest Home’ event this year,” he said. ¢

FA R M I N G ADVERTORIAL

Stalky grass signals less energy by Alltech (NZ) Limited

Seasonal factors such as increased daylight and heat cause pasture to move from a vegetative stage to a reproductive stage in order to protect itself. This leads to a drop in grass quality, and in many areas, a drop in pasture yields. The grass inevitability becomes stalky, high in fibre (NDF) and lower in protein and energy. This means that the cow is challenged with lower dry matter (DM) intake, of which every mouthful contains less energy and protein. Under such conditions, the bacteria that digest the feed in the cow’s rumen also receive less energy and protein which limits their growth and numbers. With lower numbers of bacteria, the result is poorer feed conversion, which is normally seen as a reduction in milk yield or daily live weight gain. Addressing this situation in the nutrition of the herd means both feeding more DM to fill the shortfall, but also paying attention to ensuring the rumen bacteria receive enough nitrogen to meet their growth requirements.
