Water grant paints bright future u by Andy Bryenton
Last week’s announcement of a $12 million boost for the water storage and use project “has the potential to create hundreds of jobs and grow Northland’s economy by tens of millions annually,” according to Northland Regional Council chair, Penny Smart. Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith joined Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, Provincial Growth Fund minister Shane Jones and former MP Dover Samuels at Dargaville’s Lighthouse Function Centre last Friday, for the announcement of what Mr Jones called “an unconditional cheque to help boost water management in the region”. Ms Smart said afterwards that the proposed water storage “would be very helpful right now when the region is teetering on the edge of full-blown drought.” The money will be spent locally under the ‘kai for Kaipara’ banner, promoting more efficient and profitable farming practices. The announcement came directly after $109 million was earmarked by the ministers last week for rail improvements, which affect Kaipara and all of Northland as well as a $692 million allocation for four-laning the road between Whangarei and Port Marsden. Mr Peters “remembered Dargaville as an economic powerhouse in times past,” and outlined his vision for a return to that status. “Shane and I are Northland boys,” he said. “We are proud to have come off a dairy farm. More reliable water supply could bring $150 million to horticulture and agriculture here. We have watched over the years as Northland has been forgotten. You need people (in government) who ensure that the voice of Northland, and dare I say it the provinces, are heard.”

Shane Jones added that “if you want to convert and change land-use patterns; well, without water that isn’t going to happen. The funding was a gesture of confidence, for you who want to revitalise your economy.” Chair Smart said: “A lot of Northland’s rain comes at once. There is a huge opportunity to capture this water and provide greater resilience to climate change, along with economic opportunities for our communities. The water storage project is about collecting the rain water and making it available when it’s needed.” The collaborative project involves NRC, Far North and Kaipara District Councils and Northland Inc. to manage a critical resource for the region. He says experts will be available to discuss infrastructural aspects of the project and the horticultural opportunities it could present at dropin days at Sportsville Dargaville from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday, February 18 and Ohaeawai Rugby Club from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday, February 19. Dover Samuels summed up: “It is the first time in my life that I have seen the doors of opportunity open up in this way to a region that has been taken for granted. The sun has risen on Taitokerau, and it’s up to regional authorities to meet the challenge.” Samuels also made a nod to the fact that this is an election year, humorously noting that Mr Jones would soon be asking locals for their votes. ¢

p Those who think it’s been hot during recent nights have some spiky support to back up their claim. This Echinopsis pachanoi cactus usually lives high in the dry and sunny parts of the Andes mountains, in Peru. Moreover, this local specimen has taken the recent hot and dry weather as a cue that it’s experiencing a Peruvian high-desert summer. These cacti bloom at night and in their native land are visited by moths to spread pollen. It’s a rare sight to see one blooming in New Zealand, at sea level, and a testament to the sizzling summer nights.

Northland District Health Board is developing a new Health Strategy for Te Tai Tokerau, planned to last from 2020 through until 2040. Now they’re asking the public to have their say on what’s important to them in health services, and how locals want to see healthcare delivered in the next two decades. The DHB’s leadership say that this strategy will provide high-level direction for delivering health services and improving wellbeing in our region into the future. “The strategy will strongly emphasise the elimination of inequities in access to services, the way they are provided, and in health outcomes. The process includes broad community and organisational engagement, combined with health intelligence and alignment with government p Northland’s DHB wants to involve locals in planning the next 20 years of healthcare in the region, through priorities and the National public discussion Health and Disability Review,” says NDHB communications manager to have some input into the next 20 Liz Inch. years of healthcare in the local area. “We’ve hosted community hui in Comments and suggestions can also Kaitaia, Hokianga, Kaeo, Kaikohe, be made online by visiting community. KAIPARA LIFESTYLER
This race is not yet run u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland
Let me make this quite clear. When National is elected government, it will repeal this ill-conceived, state-sponsored theft of community assets mooted by Racing Minister and rejected Northland MP Winston Peters. This newspaper, The Dargaville Racing Club, myself and indeed I believe the entire Kaipara community have railed against the proposal to seize the assets of the Dargaville Racing Club. Club president Tim Antonio calls it institutionalised theft, and he is right. The land and buildings of the Dargaville Racing Club have been donated to the club and community during a 100-year period. What gives the government the right to unilaterally seize them for what it calls the greater good of the racing community? Let me state another fact — the assets belong to the Dargaville community. They do not belong or deserve to belong to the champagneswigging, insufferably over-dressed Ellerslie Carnival attendees who, unlike most of us here in the north, are more interested in being seen
and being seen to be seen than they are in the racing itself. Don’t get me wrong. I am not against revitalising the racing industry. There is no doubt it has problems, and it is after all still part of our New Zealand tradition of rugby racing and beer. However, I am vehemently opposed to community assets such as our club here in Dargaville being seized compulsorily to support bigcity racing. Yes, we will repeal those clauses if National is elected. However, we must try to stop this now. The concepts of fairness and ownership in New Zealand are at stake. This race is not yet run. You can make a submission to discuss amendments to the bill until February 11. Visit parliament. nz/en/pb/sc/make-a-submission, scroll down to the Racing Industry bill and make your opinion heard.

Cyclists hit the Pouto trail u by Andy Bryenton
Every second year, cyclists from around the world flock to New Zealand to experience the Tour of Aotearoa, a traverse of the nation’s scenic cycle trails which is less of a race and more of a personal challenge. It’s coming for 2020, with hundreds of riders about to experience the road through the Kaipara to pouto for the first time.
p One of the world’s great cycle tours is set to touch down in Dargaville as riders traverse the trails down to Pouto
“This event is growing exponentially,” says secretary of Bike the Kaipara Trust, Nicky Reid. “It is organised by Jonathan Kennett, a well-known author of many New Zealand cycling books. Jonathan’s books and his Tour Aotearoa event have opened up NZ as a world-renowned cycling destination.” “Riders may either take part in this event or ride the route at any time. Most of the bikepackers you see on our roads are following his information. It is a Brevet, not a race, they check-in at 30 checkpoints and wear a tracker device, 100% self-supported. To enter riders must donate $100 to a charity of their
choice.” This year it’s anticipated that many riders will take the Pouto route, as a regular ferry service is running for the duration of the event. Due to a large number of entries, cyclists are released in batches of 100 at Cape Reinga. We will see them coming through Dargaville from midFebruary to mid-March, adding a boost to local tourism. Nicky says that the riders really appreciate encouragement or acts of kindness from locals they meet. Something as simple as some water, fruit or words of encouragement mean a lot when you’re riding 3,000 kilometres. ¢

New horizons for Northtec Tertiary trades-based education in Dargaville got a boost last week as Northtec celebrated the opening of their new, revitalised campus.
5
Mayors launch social media campaign u by Paul Campbell
Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith has joined with Far North’s John Carter, and Whangarei’s Sheryl Mai, all acting “as private individuals” to launch Kia Kaha Northland, a campaign for Northlanders to say yes to five major projects they say will transform the regional and national economy.
p Northtec students, staff and leaders took part in a traditional blessing before the official opening of the tertiary institute’s new campus in Dargaville
Moving from their interim Mangawhare premises to the refurbished Northtec campus in Parore Street, staff lauded the upgrades, which have seen the mothballed site transformed and ready to accept a new intake of students. With high demand from the trades sector, there are good prospects for learners. Tutors and past alumni alike confirmed that every one of 2019’s intake for the painting level four course is now in paid employment.
A senior kaumatua of Ngati Whatua completed the blessing of the buildings, consecrating them to the use of furthering young people’s success. Members of Northtec’s governing body were pleased to offer a wider range of education options to students in Dargaville. A group of students who completed last year’s level four course in painting were there to encourage new enrolments as the new site opened for business. ¢
An initial video will appear on around 300,000 Facebook and other social media accounts today to outline the campaign, which seeks associated funding. “We need all Northlanders to support Kia Kaha Northland by liking it or following it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or by emailing, calling or writing to government and opposition MPs,” the mayors said. The five elements of the campaign are: • A $240 million dry dock to enable ships to be serviced and repaired in Whangarei; • A new base for the Royal New Zealand Navy to replace Devonport; • An expanded Northport to take the cars and containers from Auckland and for exports from Northland and elsewhere; • The completion of a four-lane expressway from Whangarei to Auckland, including the planned four-lane highway to Port Marsden
• Fast-tracking a double-tracked rail line from West Auckland to Whangarei, including the planned spur to Port Marsden “We have strongly welcomed last week’s announcements about funding towards new road and rail links to Port Marsden. “All the people of Te Tai Tokerau must tell the government, the National Party and all of parliament that we want all five projects to start now,” they said. Dr Smith said: “Everyone I talk to is excited by how these five projects could transform Northland and New Zealand. “I hope lots of Kaipara people join the Kia Kaha Northland campaign on social media and #BackTheBigFive.” The initial launch is being funded by private donations with further fundraising to occur in the weeks ahead. Donations can be made to 12-3126-0259126-00 for the purchase of additional social media advertising. ¢

Water levels reach critical Training for the big one u by Andy Bryenton
u by Andy Bryenton
Residents on Dargaville’s town supply are being asked to conserve water as much as possible, as the town’s catchment from the Kaihu River runs low and water treatment machinery works overtime.
Staff from Dargaville’s Bupa Kauri Coast Care Home are going above and beyond to make a difference. Not just by doing all they can for the residents in their care, but by volunteering a team to hike 100 kilometres in 36 hours to raise money for anti-poverty charity Oxfam.
7
p The team are assembled and have been training since mid-2019 for Oxfam’s huge 100-kilometre Trailwalker challenge
their indoor water use. One example is catching shower water in a bucket that stands next to you in the shower stall. During the course of a wash — this will fill up, providing water for house plants when it has cooled down. Dishwater can be saved for a similar purpose, so long as it is not contaminated with harsh cleaning chemicals. “Adding a full milk bottle to the toilet cistern, not running the tap when shaving, fitting a low-flow showerhead and other simple tricks can save litres of precious H2O his time of year and will have a positive effect on a household’s water bill. However, until the weather changes, there would seem to be no option but to carefully manage the resources available.” ¢

Water restrictions officially reached level four out of four last week, following close to two months of dry skies and no substantial rain. Meteorologists consulted by the Kaipara District Council predict up to another eight weeks of dry conditions, so the move to level four is a preventative measure for now. There is no level higher; any further restriction would constitute an emergency, which the KDC say they are working hard to prevent. Council spokesperson Ben Hope says that while level four restrictions mean that it’s forbidden to use any water at all for outdoor purposes such as irrigation and watering, car washing, water blasting or filling pools, there’s a lot that people can achieve by being smart with
hitting the trails; we’ve even done a half marathon to get ready for the big event.” The ladies of Team Bupa Smile would love to be able to add some community sponsorship to their donations. Those who wish to pledge money toward them tackling the 36-hour challenge can visit oxfamtrailwalker.org.nz or drop in a coin or two to the Kauri Coast Care Home on Hokianga Road. ¢

Kaipara KickStart had received funding from the Provincial Growth Fund, and other sources and last week the government received further funding of $740,000 to establish pilot water supplies, bringing the total investment in Kaipara KickStart to $28.98 million. Three projects are already underway that will create employment opportunities, increase tourism and kai business opportunities: 1.
Road networks
2. Kaipara wharves 3. Kaipara Kai.
Road networks Key roads and bridges are being upgraded to support business and community growth, and to make our roads safer and more reliable. The project team is developing standard practices to make unsealed road maintenance more sustainable throughout Northland. Key roads and bridges will be prioritised and upgraded. Work to repair the Tomarata Bridge in Mangawhai will restore the bridge to a 50 tonne carrying capacity and will be completed in March. Changing climate and increasing environmental regulation are changing the way we use our land. Kaipara Kai is applying science and technology to help landowners use their land to its best potential. Climate, soil, crop and community research is well underway to determine how growers can get the most value from their land. New funding, announced last week, will enable pilot sites to be established later this year with water storage facilities. The pilot sites will identify successes and challenges of managing large scale horticulture blocks and the support that farmers may need to transform their land use to high value crops.
A water-based transport network will connect communities, support and attract residents, businesses and tourists to the Kaipara district.
The project is working closely with the Northland Regional Council, who is also supporting land transformation in Kaipara. They are exploring how a series of small-scale reservoirs could support landuse change towards horticulture on the Puotō Penninsula south of Dargaville. The reservoirs would be filled with water that currently falls on the whenua. They would not take groundwater from aquifers.
Work to build the new Dargaville pontoon will begin soon. Te Roroa and Te Kuihi are working with the project to guide the design of the pontoon and surrounding areas.
You can find out more about how water can transform land use at the Water Storage and Use Project’s open day in Dargaville on 19 February.
Research is underway to identify the best locations for wharves. The project is holding meetings in harbour-side communities to discuss aspirations and options and communities will be asked for feedback on the plan, when completed.

Expect more for expecting mums u by Andy Bryenton
For the third year in a row, Te Ha Oranga is proud to celebrate pregnancy and help expecting mothers and their partners through the questions and concerns of this miraculous stage of life. Their Hapu Mama programme returns for 2020 with more information, more guest speakers, and a wealth of valuable resources for growing families. Programme facilitator Koha Aperahama and fellow Te Ha Oranga staff member Maria Boon say that while the popular course, spanning two days, has a focus on pregnancy and childbirth, it’s not just for mums, and not just for those who are already expecting a new addition to the family. “We’re looking at kaupapa Maori birthing practices, but this is information for all cultures, all walks of life. While we’re definitely focussed on pregnancy, this is a two-day interactive learning experience for dads-to-be as well as other family members. Understanding the physical, mental and even spiritual aspects of pregnancy is a great help and comfort, especially for first-time mums and their whanau.” The two-day course takes place in Dargaville on February 25 and 26 from 9.30am to 2.30pm, and includes complimentary food, gifts to help out

LETTER TO THE EDITOR While reading Andy Bryenton’s article No evictions for neighbours ‘from hell’, (Kaipara Lifestyler, January 21 2020), I felt a wave of sympathy for the neighbours affected. I also felt sympathy for the three households who are experiencing such stress that such anti-social activity is being played out. Matt King, our member of parliament, in this article is advocating for having these families made homeless. I note that Matt King’s advertisement in the same issues states: “I’m here to help”. Matt here is your opportunity to help. Can you convene a hui with these families? Are you able to assemble elders, social workers, health professionals, police personnel and educators, sit down with these families and ask what we, as the wider society, can do to alleviate such distress? Are you willing to spend time, perhaps sharing food with these families, your

How the west was won u by Andy Bryenton
When Waimamaku transforms into a wild west town, it’s a case of ‘how the west was fun’. The small settlement north of the Waipoua Forest is preparing for their 18th annual Wild West Fest right now, and organisers insist that it’s going to be one for the record books.
p Cheese rolling has proven a popular part of Waimamaku’s Wild West Fest in previous years
On February 22 the citizens of Waimamaku will don old-fashioned costumes, dress up the town and put on a range of cowboy-themed enter tainments, complete with sharpshooting, horse riding, lasso roping action. Fans of classic movies by John Wayne and Clint Eastwood will feel right at home, as music from the era plays and the traditional wild west fare is on offer to the hungry crowds. The event began as a wild food festival back in the early 2000s. However, the spirit of fun and fantasy shone through from the community, who introduced shotgun-toting ‘bandits’, a heroic band of cowboys to meet them
in a choreographed shoot-out, country music, and even contests such as jandal throwing and cheese rolling. To protect the local cheese from harm tyres painted yellow stood in. Funds raised in prior years have gone to health and community initiatives in the north-west. This year the schedule is packed with even more wild west action, and the challenge is out there from the event committee for guests to dress in western garb and get amongst the action. “We promise a great day out for the family, with fun, food, entertainment and good old fashioned hospitality!” ¢
Sculpture in the great outdoors This February Mangawhai’s artistic community present a new take on sculpture, removing the four walls of a traditional gallery space and placing the creative works of a large group of artists out in nature.
p Elaborate forms come together in suspension as artist Nikola Jakadofsky, puts the finishing touches to her work Spielerie, ahead of the Mangawhai Artists’ Sculpture in the Garden exhibition
The show is a fundraiser, with every piece on display available for sale and perfect for installation as part of an outdoor space makeover or to complement an existing collection of sculpture art. Funds raised will be shared between two notable Mangawhai community initiatives, the Te Whai Community Trust, well-known for programmes such as their Sages support for the elderly, and the Mangawhai Artists Inc themselves, who are in the process of expanding and improving their gallery space to host even more interesting events.
Mangawhai Artists’ spokesperson Bridget Mintoft has had a sneak preview and predicts a stunning day. “More than 30 artists will be exhibiting, and alongside the visual appeal of their latest creations patrons can enjoy cafe food and refreshments and live music too. “The show has been very popular in past years, and we’re expecting a great turnout.” The display takes place in high summer to display works to their best effect on February 15–16 at the Hollis’ garden at 69 Moir Street, Mangawhai. ¢

Paparoa’s showtime success The annual Paparoa A&P Show celebrated its 144th year with a range of exhibits ranging from artwork from the local primary schools to the regional finals of the Young Farmer of the Year, with a myriad of animals and a wide variety of show attractions in between. “We couldn’t have had better attendance. Competition entries and visitors swelled numbers to record levels — we couldn’t have asked for a better outcome,” said show spokesperson, Liz Clark. “Cattle entries were well up on last year with a significant number of entries in the dry dairy section topping the list. The Young Farmers Northern Regional Final and agri-kids competitions were well-supported by a large gathering of spectators. Overall it was a fantastic day,
and we’re looking forward to bringing a better and even bigger show for 2021.” Goat classes, equestrian events and a shearing contest brought a taste of the country to town. It was a case of plenty of sunblock and wide hats too, with summer temperatures in the 30s and the indoor displays in the cool environs of the Paparoa Hall with its displays of art and crafts and produce were a welcome refuge for many. Ice creams and cold drinks were also much in demand. ¢

Somebody had a grand idea 128 years ago this month. ‘Let’s gather together all of the farming families of the West Kaipara, and host a day of celebrations, games, good food, friendly competition and pride in our accomplishments,’ they may have said. It’s an idea, which has lasted all the way to the present day. The Northern Wairoa A&P Show, colloquially known as the Arapohue show, is ready to welcome guests and competitors for the 128th time this month, as the gates open on Saturday, February 8 for a true old-fashioned good time. President of the show, Richard Alspach, says that the committee has pulled out all the stops this time around to guarantee an action-packed schedule at the Mititai Showgrounds in Arapohue. “It’s going to be a positive day, a great day for all the family, a time to celebrate all that is good about rural communities and the people that inhabit and support them,” he says. “Come and enjoy a great day out, with something for all the family, no matter what age.” Starting from the youngest age group, there will be rides and sideshows galore. Once again thanks to a grant from Pub Charities, the A&P show team can offer rides and participation at the sideshows for a gold coin donation. It makes the

Richard is especially proud to present some world-class shearing this year: “Once again, we are part of the ANZ Northland Shearing competition — this ensures that we have plenty of shearers competing. Shearing sports is one of the great unsung entertainments of the rural sector. It‘s highly skilled, it’s hard work, and it’s certainly exciting to watch. Make sure you gravitate towards
the shearing pavilion for the Open Final about 2.30pm.” There’s more entertainment in store throughout the day, with comedy acts circulating the crowd and music playing. Then there are games for all comers where prizes are up for grabs. One country classic is Tossing the Sheaf, which pits brute force against heavy hay! Our local MP intends to enter again this year, according to Richard. That’s not all; listen up for your chance to jump into a

There will be no less than five rings of equestrian events; the only place to view horse sports in the Dargaville area after the untimely closure of the local racecourse. The crowd-favourite vintage cars are also back again, with a ‘Concours d’Elegance’ competition for the bestpresented auto and the people’s choice. Make sure to vote, as picking a favourite could win you a prize! There is history in the indoor section; a rivalry of secret recipes, vegetable growing techniques and baking skills
more jealously guarded than any commercial formula! Skills on display in the hall grew out of a time when there were no supermarkets, and if you didn’t grow it or make it — you didn’t have it. These attributes are still relevant today, and enjoying a renaissance as people once again learn to craft, bake, cook, preserve, grow and knit for profit and pleasure. Please take the time to go inside the hall, and be prepared to be impressed. “Once again agri-kids and agri-teens will bring out the best in our kids and teens, as well as entertainment for the adults,” says Richard, referring to the rural contest between young farming aspirants. “It’s been a popular event for the last few years and proves to be a real crowd-pleaser. These kids are up
to the challenge, and they represent our farming future.” Of final mention (though the list of attractions could fill this edition of the Lifestyler cover to cover) is the cattle judging, an event missing for some time due to the threat of M bovis. This year,

POSITIVE FEEDBACK Who do we really trust? It used to be the used car salesman who copped all the jokes about being untrustworthy. In this day and age, international studies on which professions and sources of information we trust put auto dealers in the high middle rankings. No surprise, the number one trusted source of consumer information is still a glowing recommendation from real customers, in real life. For the record, the least trusted profession continues, after more than 50 years of polling, to be ministers of

joined by the new lowest of the low, partisan social media commentators. Each scraped a bare five to seven per cent ‘trustworthiness’ rating among thousands of people surveyed. Medical doctors, teachers (including university professors) and doctorate-level scientists were most trusted; even on topics, which were not their areas of expertise, showing that we put a lot of faith in a degree! This last statistic proves even more revealing in light of where people are liable to take advice from, especially on consumer purchases. Marketing Week magazine revealed last year that digital is the least trusted media when it comes to advice on what to buy. This effect is doubled down if that digital platform is social media, perceived as having no oversight for truthfulness. Reviews in magazines or on television shows still carry clout with more than 65 per cent of people trusting them alone. However, by far and
away, the winner is a review by someone local or known to the reader. Direct word of mouth or unprompted praise of a product or service wins hands down with 91 per cent accepting this evidence alone to head to the store. The survey also revealed that habits such as hearing about a new product via advertising, then looking deeper into it via hard-copy printed reviews and the company’s own website build toward people asking around for firsthand experiences or seeking out candid, unpaid opinions from people who are known to be harsh critics. The question on the marketing industry’s mind is how to get people to naturally have these word-ofmouth conversations. The answer seems to be a combination of the obvious (just plain having the best service or product) and the esoteric; daring to have your work reviewed by people with high standards and tough reputations. ¢

“A meaningful funeral supports healthy grieving”
What an ‘amazing experience’ with Morris & Morris. Ann Marie gave us the nicest experience, just a nice person, I kept thanking her, it felt like she was being there just for ‘us’, anytime we phoned she was there talking to us. John and the others were so good when I called in impromptu, asked what I wanted and helped me start the journey, they were very organised. The celebrant Lorraine gave us a ‘happy celebration’ and we really felt connected to her. They were very professional, very caring. They listened to our wishes and helped us put together a package that met all our needs. They were very good, but I’d expect nothing less as they are one of the prominent funeral service companies up North here.

Council ‘takes a back seat’
u by Andy Bryenton
As children prepare to get back to school, extra-curricular clubs are also seeking to invite new members. One such group is the Dargaville Scouts, who during the holiday break attended the biggest event of the Scouting calendar, jamboree. According to Scouts’ spokesperson Rebecca Davidson, new friendships were made, and older Scouts enjoyed catching up with friends from previous events during the 11-day nationwide meeting. “Three thousand kids, 12 to 15 years old from New Zealand and overseas enjoyed a wide variety of activities during jamboree, at Mystery Creek Events Centre this year. While most activities were based on-site at Mystery Creek, jetboating was a surprise activity and well-kept secret p Scouts enjoy the challenges and teamwork of jamboree, one that was part of an off-site of the largest children’s events in New Zealand overnight water base at Lake Karapiro. Included were sailing, “Jamboree was such an awesome kayaking, raft making, a water slide and experience,” says Scout leader Rebecca. “The Scouts have done stand-up paddleboards.” Each group went on different mystery things that will be with them for life. day tours, which included Hamilton We thank the community for supporting Gardens, Te Awamutu Space Centre, our fundraising efforts in giving them Otorohanga Kiwi House and Cambridge. this opportunity.” ¢
The Northland Regional Council has confirmed it will not change its position on the management of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in its Proposed Regional Plan for Northland, and will, in fact, take a ‘back seat’ instead of an active role in upcoming Environment Court appeal proceedings on the GMO issue. Council chief executive Malcolm Nicolson says there will be an Environment Court-ordered mediation in an appeal process that will decide whether management of GMOs are included in the plan — the rulebook for the way Northland’s water, air, soil and coast is managed. “The current council respects the process that was followed by the previous council and as a result, it does not intend to change its position. However, the council is conscious

that the inclusion (or not) of GMO provisions in the plan is an issue with a high level of public interest and that parties on both sides have strong views, and will, therefore, not actively participate in the upcoming court process. “Effectively council is now just another player in the issue rather than the referee; the latter role is now assumed by the Environment Court, and council’s status is no greater or less than any of the other parties.”

One is a Dargaville institution, representing a brand with more than a century of automotive achievement, and founded by the creator of affordable motoring. The other is a prominent name in off-road technology, racing and practicality, founded by the inventor of the snowmobile. Now they stand side by side on Normanby Street, offering more choice and ease of access for those looking to drive into the future. Of course, we’re talking about the new position of Can-Am in Dargaville, sharing forecourt space with the best on offer at Dargaville Ford. Ford chief Lindsay West is confident that the move will prove convenient for customers who wish to browse both vehicles for on the road and off it. With the Ford Ranger
still the nation’s top-selling machine, there’s something to be said for being able to pack a Can-Am Outlander in the back tray! For rural drivers and riders, it makes this a one-stop hub for sales and service. To ease the transition, as the Ford team embark on a construction project
