The bridge shutdown, severing State Highway 12 will affect all traffic for six hours on Tuesday, February 12. “Once again Transit are inconveniencing locals and visitors by closing the road while they re-patch Hardies Bridge,” says Bridge Concern’s Dennise Brownlie. The committee is spearheading a campaign to have the two ‘band-aid’ single lane bridges at Matakohe completely replaced. NZTA acting state highways manager for Northland, Steve Mutton, says the closure is needed to smooth out the surface where the highway and bridge connect at the southern approach. Re-sealing and maintenance work on Hardies Bridge last October was done in short bursts so that the highway could frequently be re-opened for traffic. “This work is more substantial and involves digging, installing additional drainage and laying new seal, which means the bridge and southern Bridge under repair again approach will need to be closed for the six hours. stuck in the mess. many kaipara kids celebrated completing the Dargaville library’s reading programme, the great Book mystery, receiving their achievement certificates while being entertained by Circus kumarani at taha awa garderns. Children aged up to 12 had to make at least four visits to the library to tell staff about a book they had read or had read to them with small prizes given as incentives. Library assistant Alison Martin said 50 registered, and more than half were able to make the required number of visits. “Some made many more and a lot seemed to really enjoy talking about their books. As a pilot scheme I think it went very
well and I’m pretty sure we will do it again next summer.” Those who completed the programme included five year old Kaawyn Patterson whose favourite book was We Play Together and Chase Barrington who said Whale was his favourite book. Mrs Martin added the parents made a big contribution, often helping with the reading and getting their children to the library for reporting sessions. see this on our Facebook page

after six years of nagging her parents, 16 year old, emily Ball was finally allowed to shave her long red locks to raise money for starship Children’s Hospital. “She has asked to do it since she was 10 but now that she’s 16 we feel she is old enough to make her own decisions,” says mother, Beverly Ball. She did it at the Paparoa Farmers Market which was in full swing celebrating its sixth birthday. “Everybody was saying how brave I was but the brave ones are in hospital fighting for their lives,” says Emily who is also a St John’s cadet. She was inspired by a ‘shave for a cure’ advertisement on television
and after a stint in Starship when she was four she knows firsthand the level of care given to both patients and their families. Initially Beverly was worried about Emily starting school last Wednesday but Emily says that her friends think her new hair style is cool and she’s happy with it. She has raised $400 in total with $200 resulting from her shave by hairdresser, Sammi Teisina at the markets.

They are on the lookout for new recruits and will stage a car crash at the Countdown/Warehouse car park on Waitangi day at noon giving anyone curious a chance to see them in action using ‘the jaws of life’ among other equipment. The Dargaville brigade get more than 200 call outs a year and with low volunteer numbers, they struggle to man their trucks. “At the moment we only have 15 active fire fighters which is half of what our establishment should have,” says Penny Searle who has been volunteering for almost six years. “If it’s something major and we need two trucks then it becomes difficult to fill them. We do have the resources of Ruawai and Te Kopuru but they are around 20 minutes out of Dargaville,” adds station brigade officer, Jason Campbell.
One of the youngest members, Glenn Rawhiti, 20, has been a volunteer for four years and says he has gained useful experience. “You get out what you put in.” The brigade encourages men and women over the age of 16 to sign up and anyone recruited will undergo a medical and the New Zealand Fire Service will provide comprehensive training.

Commissioners’ first report kaipara’s future involvement in consultation on local government reorganisation, in light of a proposal from the Far North District Council to central government, and the partial rates strike, are highlighted issues in the kaipara Commissioner’s first quarter report to the government. It notes while some residents were not paying, 75% of due rates were up to date and ‘the commissioners will continue their efforts to convince all ratepayers that rates struck pay for services used by them, and are payable by law’. Within the first week after their appointment on September 6, 2012, the commissioners identified the issues facing the council as ‘critical and requiring urgent attention’ and that ‘time commitment for the first three months has been considerable and are expected to remain so until June 30, 2013’, when the proposed amendment to the council’s Long Term Plan is due for completion. Key work areas covered were governance, financial and treasury discipline, historic rating irregularities, the review of significant asset and contract management matters, community engagement, supporting and strengthening the organisation, and reviewing key plans, policies and delegations. Commission chair, John Robertson, said that with the exception of the review of the Mangawhai wastewater scheme, ‘work is well advanced on all matters set down as expectations for the first three-month phase’ of their appointment. ‘The Auditor-General’s report (into the Mangawhai issue) is not yet completed, but once released will assist with informing the commissioners on matters of capacity and fitness for purpose’.
Racing on the Wairoa launches, runabouts and rafts will all be racing along the river in the Dargaville Boating Regatta on February 23, and in the Raft Race on march 2, organised by the Northern Wairoa Boating Club. Life member Terry Curel says regattas have been running long before the club was established in 1945. “There used to be regattas in the 20s,” says Terry, “and even a rowing championship regatta was held in Dargaville with people coming here from all around the world.” Runabout races will do two laps over the stretch of water between the band rotunda and the bridge and launches will do one lap as boaties battle it out for the Tilby Cup, among other prizes. “It doesn’t matter how fast your boat is because
you race against your handicap,” says club secretary Roxanne Kelly. Club commodore, Kelly Hansen has been entering the regatta off and on for the past 30 years. “It’s always a good day and things can get a little hairy coming round those corners together.” Entries cost $30 which includes two meal tickets and registrations are taken at the boating club before the races begin at 10am. DIY rafts, which last year provided thrill, spills and ‘battle entertainment’ will race from the Hansen’s boat ramp in Te Kopuru to the boating club on March 2 and the rafts will be joined by waka ama paddlers. As well as $200 for first and $100 for second, there will be a $100 prize for the most creative raft. see this on our Facebook page

trekking for leukaemia KDC appoints Mangawhai reps by Sheri O’Neill
by Rose Rees-Owen
mangawhai residents Johanna Roberts and alan Russek have been appointed community representatives to the mangawhai endowment Fund Committee.
Dargaville resident graeme Powdrell received a $2,500 boost to his fundraising project for leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, when almost 60 riders horse trekked through kairara and Waihue.
The Kaipara District Council assessed four candidates for the two positions, which have been newly created in order to involve the community to a greater extent in the operation of the Fund. Commissioner Dale described Mrs Roberts and Mr Russek as highly qualified, each having a very good track record in the district and long involvement in Mangawhai affairs. Joanna Roberts’ association with the endowment fund dates back to her time as a Kaipara District Councillor for the Otamatea Ward. She says she is delighted to be working alongside Alan Russek, and looking forward to bringing the activities of the fund more into the public eye. “There has been much rumour and innuendo, and community representation will allow the myths to be dispelled.”
graeme Powdrell with his granddaughter, madison Hayes riding for leukaemia.
The trek began at Doug Munn’s farm on Middleton road and organiser Jeannie Hindmarsh liaised with local farmers to open up their land to let the riders pass. The funds will contribute to Graeme’s Pork Pie Charity Run at the end of March when he will drive his 1975GT mini the length of the country accompanied by his co-driver and step daughter Amy, travelling from Kaitaia to Invercargill in six days retracing the route taken in the iconic 1981 New Zealand movie, ‘Goodbye Pork Pie.’ He has been involved in the bi-yearly event since it began in 2009 with the charity run raising $270,000 for the Starship Foundation.
“In November 2010 one of the organiser’s daughter was diagnosed with lymphoma and it was during this time it became apparent that LBC receives no government funding,” says Graeme. His journey is dedicated to Dargaville resident, Lois Hall who recently lost her battle with leukaemia. So far he has raised $7000 for leukaemia and blood cancer and his efforts continue with a stand at the Arapohue Show as well as the Northland Field Days.

The amazing maize maze Festival at a Kaipara icon by Rose Rees-Owen
by Rose Rees-Owen
the Dargaville lion’s maize maze opened last weekend with children and the young at heart eager to get lost and found in the puzzle which resembles the shape of the lion’s logo. Club member Clive McDermott and president John Tomlinson flew up to get an aerial photograph to get the full effect of the course which they had mapped out on ground when the crop was only a few centimetres high. “Around five members worked the tracks out just before Christmas and we wanted to make it more challenging this year with a few more dead ends,” says Mr McDermott. “Last year it was in a shape of a kauri tree and the first year we ran it, it was the town clock.” More than 800 got lost in the maze last summer on Doug and Ann Nilsson’s farm who donate the land to the Lions. “They do it out of the goodness of their hearts,” says Clive, “we give a portion of the takings to them but then they always put it back into a community group of their choice.” The Lion’s have chosen Project Promise to be their biggest benefactor and they will give some funds to the
new cinema being built along with deserving individuals. Community groups such as Circus Kumarani, Northern Wairoa Lions, Boy Scouts and the Girls Brigade will each take a turn to man it for a weekend getting to leave with the takings. It will run 10am-4pm weekends and by appointment during the week until Easter and Clive says they will build more tracks adding on to the course. Entry to the maze is, $2 for children, $3 for adults and $8 for a family. see this on our Facebook page

21-23 February 2013 STATE HIGHWAY 14 DARGAVILLE
Field Days record hopes by Paul Campbell
Northland Field Days organisers are looking to set records this month, when the gates open on February 21. President, Lew Duggan, says 90% of the 32ha facility had been booked towards the end of last month. Event coordinator Meagan Edmonds says that an average of two companies have been signing up each day since registrations opened. “As the interest in available sites is high, I am letting potential exhibitors know that the sites they might be looking at today may be gone tomorrow,” she added. “A higher dairy payout and the event’s new February 21–23 new dates are behind the shift,” said Mr Duggan. “Many businesses see now as the right time to expand their share of the steadily growing agricultural industry. Better scheduling between the Northland field days and regional events in the Central Districts and the South Island has meant that more businesses can actually make the trip up to Dargaville without missing out on the other two events.” “And with last season’s good weather and this season’s higher payout it makes sense for exhibitors to be getting their name out as much as they can.” He said visitors will be ”amazed by the variety of exhibitors as well as the numbers with exhibitors coming from all different corners of the earth with a wide range of things to show to farmers. “We have one exhibitor returning from Australia. It doesn’t matter if you’re a
farmer, a lifestyle block owner or if you live in a town, there will be plenty for you to see and do at the 2013 Northland Field Days.” He said the organisers were especially impressed with the lifestyle tent turnout and says they considered adding a fourth lifestyle marquee to cope with demand. “Olive oil, crafts, liqueur, paintings. I was amazed by the range of exhibitors in the lifestyle pavilion this year.” Sports and entertainment venues are also attracting huge attention this year and there are high hopes the weather will be more settled on the earlier show dates. Waste water treatment revolutionised
LIME APPLICATION BY

A good waste water treatment system is the key to a healthy and happy home — tirelessly tackling a ‘dirty job’ out of sight and often out of mind. For those living ‘off the grid’, away from town wastewater infrastructure, the old fashioned option of a traditional septic system has been superseded by new technology; an innovative new approach pioneered right here in the Kaipara. Waterflow NZ Ltd is the name of the company behind the Naturalflow system, a new kind of power-free, ecologically friendly wastewater treatment system — one which offers cost and environmental benefits without the need for specialist plumbing. The modular in-ground system is designed and constructed in the Kaipara

by local engineers and entrepreneurs, is moulded from durable plastic by Ruawai company Portstar Plastics, and assembled in Maungaturoto by Waterflow NZ Ltd to ship across New Zealand. New homes, and indeed homes which require a wastewater system upgrade
due to expansion or renovations, are a perfect match with the odourless, elegant Naturalflow design. Harnessing the power of nature to break down waste in a chemicalfree, power-free manner, the system saves water (especially in grey water processing), and is already receiving praise from early adopters. “The unit has worked without a hitch since the day we started using it — now over two years ago,” says R.S. Allen of Hahei beach, a very satisfied Naturalflow customer. “I would highly recommend this system.” “Around 2004 we started to have problems with the septic tank system on our Ruawai Flats property. Intial inquiries showed it would cost between $9 — $11K to fix the problem,” says Kaipara local A.K Radich. “Natural Flow installed a retro-fit Wormorator® system in just one morning, at a cost of approximately $2200. There have been no teething problems, there have never been any untoward smells and maintenance and compliance costs have been minimal. Hence I can recommend this system without reservation.” By combining tried and tested bioscience with an innovative new approach to wastewater management, Naturalflow has become a home-grown success story. Today Waterflow NZ Ltd have qualified installers, drainage engineers and representatives across New Zealand who support the Naturalflow system, quietly revolutionising the way we deal with waste in the 21st Century. If you are building, renovating or upgrading, call them to discuss your options, and enjoy the Naturalflow difference!

COmmOn RAIL DIESEL TUnInG ChIPS
More power, more fuel economy
Reduce trip times, running costs, increase torque and horsepower, save fuel! Don’t Believe? Enquire about our FREE trial.
Italian diesel tuning specialists Impulso have garnered quite a reputation with their ability to boost the power and fuel economy of modern diesel vehicles. It’s little wonder, considering the money saved by Impulso customers around the world — from fleets of long-haul trucks to hard working farm tractors and family SUVs, the rise of modern diesel power has been matched by the popularity of Impluso’s clever technology. And now the revolution has reached New Zealand. Impulso manufacture performance upgrade chips for common rail diesel vehicles — the modern, more efficient form of diesel power plant as used in most post-2000 trucks and tractors. Their patented technology means that by simply plugging in a small computer you can boost the fuel economy and the performance of your vehicle, saving money and offering more ready power to get the job done. Tried and tested results of up to 40% more power and 20% more fuel economy have been recorded with no other modifications but the Impulso unit. Previously the only accepted way to gain such a boost was by ‘remapping’ the vehicle’s computer. However this process is a once-only, non reversible fix — with sometimes negligible results. In contrast, the Impulso unit has ten different settings which can be switched between for more power or greater economy, and when it’s disconnected it’s as if it was never there.
Imagine gaining extra horsepower for your ute to tackle those big jobs, or giving your truck the get up and go to climb hills in a higher gear. In fact, imagine what such a system could do for any of your diesel vehicles — especially if you’re putting in a lot of miles for work. DAE have made imagination into reality by importing Impulso diesel tuning technology into New Zealand, for anyone who wants to get more from their common rail diesel machinery. This is no science fiction story — huge gains in power and fuel efficiency really can come from the smart computer control of an Impulso unit. This year at the field days DAE will be demonstrating just what this clever innovation can do — a must-see if you have a diesel powered machine in your barn or garage!

Valentines Day
Romantic visions and bespoke creations With valentine’s day on the way there’s love in the air — and that means weddings are being pencilled in on calendars across the kaipara. Whether you’re the best man, a bridesmaid or the guest of honour, you’re sure to want to look your best for the big occasion. That’s why it’s good to see a brand new store opening on Dargaville’s main street; the premises of Cinnabar Creations. Inside you’ll find owner Susan Fowlie, designer and creator of unique bridal gowns, occasional wear and beautiful bespoke clothing for every day. After operating from her home for the past 18 months, Susan has made the move to her new store in Edwin Arcade (just past Gloria’s Flowers and Gifts, another Valentine’s day hot spot). It’s here that her customers can come for a proper tailored fitting, and have input into the creative process as their garments go from design to reality. Susan first learned the arts of sewing from her mother, and then went on to expand her knowledge all through her school years. She attended A.I.T. (now Auckland University of Technology) in the same class as renowned fashion designers such as Caroline Church and Adrienne Winkelmann, susan Fowlie of Cinnabar Creations offers bespoke, never-to-be copied designer fashions for events such as weddings — the best way to make your special day absolutely unique.

We were taught by the best.” Susan’s Cinnabar Creations label is set to be a hot ticket for the fashion conscious, and she promises that those planning a wedding — or any big event

Comments by messrs Preston and Bull Dear editor, Quote: “The biggest threat to the welfare of Kaipara right now comes from those who are refusing to pay their rates… This places essential works… at risk. It will only continue the course of destruction so ably carried out by past councils.” I totally disagree. It is nonsensical in the same breath to acknowledging the corruption of duty of past regimes whilst simultaneously loading the woes of the current financial strife on a few ratepayers whose ONLY request is justice. Rather, the biggest threat to the district now is apathy and ratepayer roll over as promoted by these folk. Shame on you. By accepting the continuation of sweeping dirt under the carpet you are laying sod on the coffin whilst

the faithful are seeking a rising of the dead. The breach of promise, non consulted phantom bill is not a cure, rather a lethal bullet sealing the fiscal fate for a generation or more. It would be open approval of injustice that is not Kaipara’s alone, but shared by the citizenship of New Zealand. Dishonest and incompetent governance or bureaucracy is a sinister disease that must be lanced where ever it arises or it will become the norm. Not an inheritance I want my children to receive. So roll over and play stupid I will not. I only hope those other staunch souls among us who also seek truth and justice are inspired to stand long and firm. I am. With respect Paul M. smith, Pahi

Mangawhai speed zone changes Years of lobbying by Mangawhai residents culminated recently in a Kaipara District Council review of speed restrictions in the main arterial link between the two urban areas of Mangawhai Village and Mangawhai Heads. Council has approved changes to a stretch of Molesworth Drive that formerly had three restriction zones along its length. The changes reduce the 70 kilometre per hour zone on the section of road to 50, and will involve the repositioning of some signs.
Mangawhai Activity Zone spokesperson Warren Stott says that the approval is great news. “It’s long been a public safety issue — we’ve been asking for changes to the speed restrictions since way back in 2007.” After meeting this week with Commissioner Dale and Kaipara District Council Operations Manager John Burt, Warren is hopeful that further improvements will be made to the area. “We’re still canvassing for footpaths and would also like to see the 50 kilometre per hour zone extended,” he says.
kaipara’s ‘instant info’ Kaipara District Council has introduced a new information service aimed at ratepayers and residents. Recipients with email get information in areas they specify of interest, such as civil defence and emergency warnings, events, newsletters and updates from the council’s commissioners, Long Term Plan, Annual Plans and reports and council press releases. Corporate Services manager Barbara Ware says the system is being used
successfully by other councils and will provide both easy public access to information and consultation opportunities, without a lot of extra work or cost. “We also have to consider that 34 per cent of our ratepayers are nonresident which means that about onethird probably don’t have access to our local papers.” To register: go to www.kaipara.govt.nz.
