A ‘kick-start for Kaipara’ u by Paul Campbell

Kaipara is to receive $28.2 million from the government’s Provincial Growth Fund, with the grant announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Regional Economic Development minister Shane Jones, at Otamatea Marae near Maungaturoto last Sunday.

“The grant is a huge kick-start to the local economy,” said Kaipara Mayor, Jason Smith. “Council chief executive, Louise Miller and I went to Wellington last October and proposed that a Kaipara package is focussed on projects, which would benefit the largest number of people and would be a kickstart for Kaipara economic development. “The three subject areas would be roads, wharves and kai — growing food in Kaipara. Roads are the largest area of ratepayer complaints and the biggest frustration of locals and visitors. Kaipara certifiably has some of the worst unsealed roads in New Zealand.” The lion’s share of the new funding will go to improve the district’s roads. “Reliable transport infrastructure is crucial to Northland’s economic success as it affects every part of the region’s economy,” Jacinda Ardern said. “That’s why we have announced that the government will invest $19.41 million to upgrade transport links in Kaipara. An additional $6.84 million will be invested from the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF); this plus local contributions bring the total investment in Kaipara transport infrastructure to $27.26 million. “We will also explore upgrading Kaipara wharves and water transport with the Kaipara Moana helping the district leverage more benefits from the Kaipara Harbour, the biggest in New Zealand.

p Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith and Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern

“The government will also invest $980,000 towards Kaipara Kai — a project that will explore new crop and stock types, and aquaculture opportunities for the region.” The initiative will also promote highvalue cropping by utilising existing soil and crop research and environmental best-practice. Shane Jones said the projects would not only enable greater land utilisation but also create more resilient communities and have significant environmental impacts for the district.

“Local people have told us that infrastructure is a priority for them and a key enabler of future economic growth. Today’s commitment to Kaipara will help the region leverage its substantial assets in the primary sector and generate meaningful and sustainable economic growth. “Investments like those announced today demonstrate our commitment to tackle these challenges and turn around the economic fortunes of the North and its people.” continued on page 3 …

Group protests landfill plan

A ‘kick-start for Kaipara’

u by Paul Campbell

Protests are continuing for a group opposed to plans for Chineseowned Waste Management to create a landfill for Auckland rubbish on 1,000 hectares in the Dome Valley. The group has now formed an incorporated society — Fight the Tip: Tiake te Whenua — and has opened a petition to parliament. Waste Management has been given overseas investment office approval to buy the property for landfill, and the protesters have banded together to actively oppose the move. A key concern is their perceived threat to the Kaipara Harbour. “In China, they are stopping landfills now, so why is that company, based in China, happy to come put a landfill on our land?” says society administration member, p Michelle Carmichael Michelle Carmichael. Local people say hazardous waste “won’t see the landfill, you won’t smell from the landfill could end up in the the landfill, you won’t hear the landfill, Hoteo River, which runs through the local community, local neighbours won’t even notice it’s there.” middle of the proposed site. Another cause for concern is the “Battery acid, rotting rubbish, who knows what will be coming down that massive movement of trucks carrying stream, it goes into the Hoteo River, it refuse through the Dome Valley, already goes into the Kaipara Harbour, which on a dangerous section of SH1. is one of the largest snapper breeding Land Information minister, Eugenie grounds in New Zealand,” says Lee Sage, says approval was given because Laughton who owns land near the site. of the benefits the landfill offers. Visitors to the annual Kai Iwi lakes Open Day were treated to beautiful weather and an array of activities to enjoy during Northland Anniversary weekend.

p At the Kai Iwi Lakes Open Day 62 people took part in a night snorkel at Lake Waikare

Photo by Lorna Doogan, snorkel event organiser

Organiser, Whitebait Connection, coordinated the event ensuring visitors had plenty to see and do and included a water testing activity at their stall where people could view the clarity of the lake water. Northland Regional Council provided information about the lakes pests and threats and were also advocating for the Check — Clean — Dry campaign, ensuring water users were aware of the potential impact introduced pest plants could have on the crystal clear lakes. Staff from Experiencing Marine Reserves took 102 people on a guided day snorkel through the lake spotting fish and also offered a night snorkel to 62 participants. Glow sticks and waving torch lights reportedly made for

a surreal experience as dragonfly larvae and eel came to life. “My son absolutely loved it, and we learnt a bit about the endangered weeds and pests and how important it is to protect the lakes,” said visitor, Sarah Cameron. Amongst other displays were Coastguard North Kaipara and the Hikuwai O Kaipara Waka Ama Club who took participants for a paddle across the lake and back, impressing them with surprising speed. “These dune lakes are the jewel in the crown for the Kaipara, and it’s very important that we keep them that way. It means stopping pollutants from entering these pristine closed ecosystems,” said snorkel event organiser, Lorna Doogan. ¢

Reducing waste u by Jill Dickie

Dargaville residents are advised Kaipara Refuse is no longer recycling number one coloured plastic bottles, and soft plastics such as plastic bags may also be stopped in the near future due to overflowing stockpiles. It is suggested that reducing consumer waste is the best solution.

5

Total fire ban Fire and Emergency New Zealand has imposed a total fire ban in Northland following record temperatures here and in many parts of the country. The fire status was upgraded from restricted to a total fire ban in Northland from midnight Monday, January 28 with a hot, dry summer and little rain in the region. There is an extreme fire risk in Northland, Wairarapa and Canterbury and very high risk in Nelson/Marlborough due to very dry conditions. “We’re reaching our trigger points,”

says principal rural fire officer, Myles Taylor. “It’s getting very dry, and we’re noticing that fires are escaping, they are getting harder to put out, and so we’re erring on the side of caution. “Any fires right now would be extremely dangerous.” Residents can check their local fire status at checkitsalright.nz.

Water restrictions p “No meat trays, biscuit trays or fruit trays are recyclable,” said a spokesperson at the Awakino Road refuse centre in Dargaville

With no market on the horizon, the stockpiles have accumulated at the Ruawai yard and filled it to capacity. With nowhere to send the coloured plastic, they need to stop accepting more. “This is a New Zealand-wide issue, and while other councils in Northland may be taking this product it is being stockpiled or landfilled — it just means the contractor will be putting it somewhere, possibly in the ground, or maybe in storage hoping for a break in the market for it to be sold,” said Kaipara District Council spokesperson, Ben Hope. “Kaipara Refuse is working

hard to find markets for these products, and as soon as a market becomes available we will reintroduce these items for recycling.” On the website zerowaste. co.nz it is suggested manufacturers could phase out unnecessary packaging and consumers should also become aware of what they purchase and how they will dispose of plastic items — this would reduce the amount of waste produced because items could be reused rather than recycled or disposed of. People wanting to offer their feedback can register at kaipara.govt.nz/panel. ¢

Kaipara District Council advise water restriction level two is currently in place for residents on mains supply, which means no sprinklers or irrigation systems may be used to water gardens or lawns and instead use a watering can or hose with a trigger nozzle. A bucket, water blaster or hose may be used to wash vehicles,

windows and buildings, and swimming pools may be topped up from the mains supply. It is also suggested that conserving water now may reduce the need for compulsory restrictions later. Information on tips for saving water at home are available at kaipara.govt. nz and to monitor water levels in the region visit bewaterwise.org.nz.

Boots on for Kathmandu u by Jill Dickie

A group of parents, students and staff from Otamatea High School are fundraising to send local Robyn Bruce to Nepal in April this year for a trekking trip of a lifetime, and they have almost achieved their goal. Robyn will join others who love this type of adventure in spending two weeks walking in the Everest region, experiencing the sights of Kathmandu and being amongst the highest mountains in the world. “Robyn is the tireless Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) coordinator at Otamatea High School and has helped countless students through this process, being their mentor, guide and encourager and we wanted to say thanks,” said organiser Libby Jones. “As well as this, she has inspired and helped many others through her work in the school, including her long commitment coaching the Otamatea Hockey teams.” Through Robyn’s leadership, the DOE programme has grown at Otamatea High School, keeping the students on track with their skills, community service and physical recreation and coordinates fundraising for them. She has also been heavily involved in organising tournament hockey travel to the South Island. “Robyn has touched many young people’s lives through her passion, commitment and belief in them, and we want to show our appreciation,” said Libby.

Northland Inc seeks new leader u by Paul Campbell

Northland Inc is seeking a new CEO after the resignation of Dr David Wilson after more than five years with the regional economic development agency. Dr Wilson was credited with having Kaipara as the national landing place for the US$440-million Hawaiki International Fibre Cable, which came ashore at Mangawhai Heads last year. The 59-year-old is relocating back to Auckland to join his family, who have continued to live there since he assumed his CEO role in 2013. Northland Inc chair, Sarah Petersen, said Dr Wilson had made a significant contribution to the region and would retain strong links to the north and his former employer. Northland Inc is owned by the region’s ratepayers via the Northland Regional Council, and its chairman Bill Shepherd thanked Dr Wilson for his tireless efforts to improve the North’s economic performance — reflected in February last year when he was appointed to central government’s Provincial Growth Fund Independent Advisory Panel. “My fellow councillors and I wish him well in whatever new venture he under takes. Nor thlanders

collectively owe him a great debt for his considerable efforts on our behalf across multiple fronts.” Dr Wilson plans to maintain national leadership roles in regional economic development as EDNZ chair and is expected to continue a strong working relationship after he finishes officially in the CEO role at the end of March. ¢

WARNING, FACIAL ECZEMA IS IMMINENT Facial eczema is a disease caused by a fungus that grows on dead plant material found at the base of the pasture releasing spores during the summer months. Under warm and humid conditions, these spore numbers rise rapidly. When fungal spores are ingested they release a toxin called sporidesmin which causes damage to the liver, leading to poor health, low production, and potentially death. What are the symptoms? - Dullness, weakness, inappetence, and ill-thrift - Sun sensitivity, sunburn, redness, and swelling on unpigmented areas - Liver failure leading to risk of metabolic disease the following season - Sudden death What can we do about it? - Use zinc preventively: • in feed, drenches or drinking water, or • for best protection, individual dosing of stock with a zinc bolus such as Face-Guard Why choose Face-Guard? Face-Guard is the unique zinc bolus for cattle and sheep: - One dose protects animals for six weeks - A top-up dose at six weeks extends protection to a total of • ten weeks in cattle • twelve weeks in sheep - The bolus is robust and less likely to break when dropped - Proven safety and efficacy

Family fun in the sun u by Paul Campbell

Launch races, kayak contests, runabout races, and outboard powered bathtubs kept a huge crowd entertained at the annual Anniversary weekend Pahi Regatta, still going strong since 1886. The accent was on the water during the day, with shoreline entertainment in the big marquee at night. Hamburgers, mussel fritters and bacon and eggs among other foods kept hunger at bay. Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith was among the spectators and was soon singled out by the organisers at the Pahi Boating and Fishing Club. “A beaut day in a beaut place, even better on the water,” he said. “I got to call the start of the King of the Kaipara launch race, from the safety boat out in the channel, so that was a bit of fun.” Across the years the regatta format has settled onto water-based events, and an onshore component with sideshows, carnival rides, beauty

contests — anything from Miss and Mrs Pahi, to the ‘best beer belly’ contest, along with the presentation of prizes for event winners on the water. “This year was well attended, and well run by our large team of volunteers,” said club commodore Mike Donald. “As always, the emphasis was on family fun in a safe environment and the day played out just that way.” The regatta attracted visitors from Auckland northwards, plus overseas tourists pleased to stumble onto some genuine kiwi action. “A crowd favourite as always were the iconic bathtub races, the biggest in New Zealand,” said commentator Tim McGill. ¢

Tuning in at Toka For the seventh year, the stage will be set for Northland music fans of all ages to experience local and international talent, sharing a common love of music, at the Tokatoka Tavern.

p Kaipara band Sojourn is gaining momentum on the national music scene opening for popular bands and will perform at Tokafest

Tokafest provides an opportunity for upcoming musicians and acts to perform in front of a relaxed, down to earth audience where visitors can enjoy a diverse range of genres from folk through to hard rock to hip-hop and drum and bass. The main focus is on local musicians, though internationally recognised acts from Australia, Canada and the USA have performed in the past. This year two acts, which will perform between 1.30pm and 3.15pm, are from Melbourne Australia, including Blunderbuss Jones whose performance features a flaming trumpet. “I’m really looking forward to seeing all of the acts, and I’m really excited at the calibre we have this year. I think

this is the best line-up we’ve had thus far,” said organiser and musician, Olly Knox. There will be 10 entirely new acts not seen before at Tokafest as well as repeat performances from are AWAL, Monfrady, The Seams, Hearse Nurse (NZ Battle of the Bands winners), Faceless and Circus Kumarani. A shuttle service will operate between the event and the camping area, which will be well lit with facilities for people to relax and socialise. For those not camping overnight, getting home safe and responsible drinking is important to organisers who want to provide a safe event. Entry is $10 at the event. For camping enquiries phone 0274 489 6093. ¢

Releasing fatbergs u by Jill Dickie

Kaipara District Council are offering a reminder to Mangawhai residents to be careful of what is put into the sink and toilet if residents have a grinder pump on their property or are connected to one, ensuring house guests are aware of what it all entails. Recently, maintenance engineers have discovered a number of items that have been flushed, either accidentally or on purpose, that has resulted in blockages to grinder pumps. “One of the biggest culprits is wipes. Although some wipes are labelled as flushable, they are not biodegradable and should not enter the sewer system. Wet wipes down the toilet are one of the biggest causes of blockages at the expense of ratepayers,” said Kaipara District Council spokesperson, Ben Hope. When fat and grease are washed

down the sink, they can get rolled up and picked up by wipes in the network, creating lumps known as fatbergs. To prevent this from happening people should ensure fat, oil, grease and non-biodegradable items do not go down sinks and toilets. Cities all around the world are facing increased pressure on their sewerage networks due to fatbergs. Last year a 250 metre long, 130-tonne mass dubbed the Whitechapel fatberg was found in the London underground sewer system. For more information phone Ben Hope 09 439 1124.

We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of Februaury if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue. Area specific works completed during the last month include: • Water table restoration – West Coast Road, Karaka Road, Sommerville Rd, Oneriri Rd, Griffin Rd • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Kai Iwi Lakes Rd, Otioro Rd, Gibbons Rd, Oruawharo Rd, Horniblow Rd, Omamari West Rd • Culvert Replacements / Repairs – James Rd • Unsealed pavement repairs – Mapuna Rd • Sealed Pavement Repairs – Tinopai Rd, Arapohue Rd, Matakohe East Rd • Reseals - Molesworth Dr, Insley St, Mangawhai Heads Rd (East / West) • Line Marking – Mangawhai Township NOTE TO DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS: Between October and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement, this introduces fresh aggregate into the failure in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers, and to prevent damage to the repairs. We understand that there is a degree of inconvenience caused by these works, however this inconvenience is significantly extended if we are required to return to any sites that require repairing. Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information.

The meat in the sandwich u by Matt King, Northland’s Member of Parliament

Later this month I shall be at the Northland Field Days. I am very much looking forward to them. It is Northland’s largest annual agricultural celebration and, as the organisers say — rightly — on their website, the Friendly Field Days.

u by Andy Bryenton

The annual Dargaville Wearable Arts extravaganza has become a red letter day in the calendar of our local creative community. Last year’s show was bigger and brighter than the one before, and plans are afoot for 2019’s showcase of artistic style to be more focussed, streamlined, visually spectacular and dynamic.

p Intricate skill, innovative vision — Dargaville’s Wearable Arts extravaganza returns for 2019

With three categories spanning a range of creative inspirations, contestants will have ample opportunity to let their imaginations fly free. Our Natural Environment returns as a popular section — taking inspiration from the vistas of sea and sky, forest and farmland. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle puts mundane man-made materials into a new context, turning them from trash to treasure. It’s all about seeing the potential in what others throw away and making a statement for a sustainable future. Meanwhile, the Avant Garde category pushes the envelope of design and blurs the line between fashion and modern art. In this category, anything goes, and designers are encouraged to test the limits of their vision and the materials

at hand to bring forth the beautiful and the bizarre. Being involved in the Dargaville Wearable Arts experience is both rewarding and inspiring — working alongside designers, models and stage production specialists to bring your vision to a live audience is a real thrill. If you think you have what it takes to make your creation come alive for 2019, it’s time to start planning. Entries are open now and close on the June 14, or when 45 designers have accepted the challenge. Don’t delay — take the opportunity to make your imagination come to life. Visit dargavillearts.co.nz/events and download further information and an entry form, and show the world what you can achieve. ¢

It is also a reminder, not that one is needed, of the importance of farming and the primary sector to our country, and the field days are to farmers and townies alike the most visible manifestation of that. For that reason, the recent comments by associate health minister Julie Anne Genter are both worrying and perplexing. I am prepared to bet they will be a topic of conversation and some derision at the field days. Julie Anne Genter initially refused to rule out a red meat tax. To be fair to Julie Ann, it was not — apparently — her idea in the first place, and she has since ruled it out completely, saying her earlier comment was a “figure of speech.” However, for this Green Party minister to even think about a tax on New Zealand’s second-biggest export, contributor of more than two per cent

of GDP and a significant employer throughout the country, is ludicrous. Even if this tax does not eventuate, there are others such as the proposed sugar tax that points to a government whose simplistic answer to a ‘problem’ is tax it. That is on top of Agricultural minister Damien O’Conner saying that when it comes to soaring costs and taxes on farmers, there are more to come. Then arrogantly adding: “Get used to it!” So, we farmers are the meat in the sandwich. On one side, we are hit by a nanny-state (though Ms Genter would probably consider that term sexist) ideology that uses tax as a weapon, and on the other side the spiralling costs impacting on farmers. It is not acceptable and at the field days, I’ll certainly be interested in hearing what you have to say about it. ¢

Experience local flavour February is here, and that means not only the season for leisurely late summer barbecues, but also the advent of our local Agricultural and Pastoral show here in the west Kaipara, and the field days to follow. Both are celebrations of the best of rural life, focussing on different aspects of farming. However, there’s one other great thing about this time of year. It’s a brilliant excuse to taste some fresh local flavours on a show-day related road trip. Of course, this means booking early for some of the more popular restaurants and venues in our locality. There’s going to be a mass migration of visitors descending on the area for both the Arapohue Show on February 9 and the immense Northland Field Days itself at the end of the month, so large parties are advised to give their favourite eateries a call now and avoid disappointment. It could be said to be doubly true for another forthcoming engagement. A dinner for two is the classic Valentine’s Day date night, and romantics and lovers of gourmet food alike are well advised to pick up the phone before

the big day. In Dargaville, the Northern Wairoa Hotel will reprise their famous Valentine’s dinner with a free glass of bubbles for the ladies. Over in Paparoa, the popular Thirsty Tui are also getting into the romantic mood of the season, with an Italian three-course meal of pure ‘amore’. The balmy weather which accompanies our February 14 means it’s a perfect time to appreciate the Mediterranean flavours of the ‘old country’ in the outdoors. With gardens growing overtime, it’s also a fine time of year to appreciate some of your own produce — or some of your neighbours’, if you are lucky enough

Retirement & Lifestyle Designed for life u by Andy Bryenton

Here in the Kaipara — and as part of a national trend — we are seeing an increase in the number of people moving to the region for the retirement lifestyle it offers. Many will have left the city behind, and plan to settle down in a home with views, a plot of land, a pleasant climate and access to the outdoors. It also means that many of our older houses are being renovated to fit the aesthetic and practical needs of our new residents. While it’s often a matter of necessity to revitalise an older home — and certainly, many above 65 have the skills and ability to undertake such projects with the help of professionals for those more difficult or specialised jobs — it’s also a chance to plan for the future. If this is to be a home for life, that means making it a home, which is easy to enjoy not just today, but into the future. That future may, with life expectancies ever growing, be one in which you can live in your own home well into your eighth or ninth decade. That means that here, as in other parts of New Zealand, renovation plans should include some ‘independence proofing’, ensuring it’s not just possible but pleasurable to enjoy your retirement home forever. Experts suggest simple things such as ensuring that there are ample wide access doors such as ranch sliders with a low clearance, shallow steps where necessary, easy to maintain kitchens and bathrooms, non-

slip flooring and efficient heating. It’s sometimes daunting to consider your needs at the age of 90, but planning ahead means that the home which you are redesigning to enjoy your 60s in will remain practical for decades. Even modern architects overseas are getting into the habit of designing homes to be future-proof with age in mind. Some in Europe specialise in designing homes for fit, healthy, active retirees who do not need to consider such things as mobility scooter access or ease of ingress to showers and hot tubs — but may well have to think of them in the years to come. It’s all about clever design, and here in New Zealand, it’s more than possible to accomplish such changes during a renovation — for less than you may think. After all, a home is an investment in the future, so it makes sense to think practically about what that future will bring. That means enjoying a great view, a prime spot and a lovely home for longer.

Youngsters were to the forefront at the 143rd annual Paparoa A&P Show, where the family fun theme saw the launch of Kid’s Country Challenge, which this year tested some young would-be farmers, who spent a busy time trying out their skills and getting up close and personal with farm animals. “It was very much a young people’s

show, especially in the cattle ring where we had both young judges and competitors taking part in the calf section,” said publicity coordinator Liz Clark. “We’ve received very positive feedback from showgoers — rural events remain crowd pleasers, and we’re looking forward to a bigger and even better show for 2020.” ¢

Now servicing Maungaturoto United Appliances Limited is a small, locally-owned and operated enterprise originating from a previous electrical and appliance store in Wellsford. After several years of specialising in servicing and used appliances, we expanded into the supply and installation of heat pumps to our business. Approximately five years ago, retailing of the latest kitchen and laundry appliances were added — gradually expanding the range that we stock. United Appliances during the years has established a respected position in the marketplace from Warkworth and the surrounding beach communities through to Kaiwaka and Mangawhai and now Maungaturoto. John Hosford, our newest team member, lives and works in Maungaturoto and wanted to get into the industry — as he loves seeing and figuring out how things work. “I also love the challenge it brings as well, as no two days are ever the same. I get the opportunity to either do repairs in the workshop or travel to a customer’s house to repair appliances there.” Now married with six children, John grew up in the area. “I have been in the area since I was young only moving away

Power to the ground u by Andy Bryenton

100

There comes a time when simply developing more horsepower is not enough. We’ve seen it in the power wars between big brands of roadgoing cars — at a certain critical juncture, there’s a limit to what can be transmitted from even the most advanced engine to the ground. That’s why the latest advancement in Can-Am’s Outlander range of quad bikes involves the delivery of applied force where you need it.

IT’S NOT A TARGET

Knowing that the contact patches, which anchor any vehicle to the ground are only the size of most people’s palm-print, Can-Am engineers have made significant suspension and ride refinements to the 2019 Outlander XT to complement its selection of three Rotax engine choices — either a 62hp 650cc, a 78hp 750cc or a thumping 91hp 1,000cc V-twin unit. It all begins at the front, with a wider stance meaning a more planted feel on the trail. Can-Am has improved the front A-arm suspension and sway bar to capitalise on this wider track. At the rear, the independent suspension has also been reworked to eliminate scrub and camber changes, leading to a more ‘straight up and down’ wheel motion with plenty of travel. It all adds up to inspire confidence in the rough. Less unsprung weight, tyres with extreme

grip and even more durable aluminium wheels have all been added to the recipe. Controlling the Outlander XT has also been made easier with the adoption of a three-mode power steering system, which adapts to your input for easier turning in tight spots. At slow speeds, the power steering assist is ramped up, while it steps into the background when the revs get high, allowing for a natural feel of the terrain through the handlebars. Like all the best technologies, it’s unobtrusive when you don’t need it, though there is a further level of control — p Can-Am have concentrated on getting power to the ground Can-Am has provided riders where it’s needed for their new Outlander XT with three distinct settings to tailor the power steering response to on previous models of Outlander, taking the conditions. the range to a new peak. From one classic to another

kaiparalifestyler.co.nz

u by Andy Bryenton

In 1959, a man named Alec Issigonis working for the British Motor Company revealed what many at the time thought was merely a response to lack of resources and growing congestion on the roads of England. Others openly called it a joke. However, they weren’t laughing so hard as the Mini — the original — went on to spawn more than 120 variants and remain in production until the turn of the century. Why mention this little Brit icon when discussing a zero-turn mower, you might ask? It’s because there’s more than a little in common between the diminutive automotive star of The Italian Job and Mr Bean, and Ferris Mowers’ compact and quick 400S. Of course, the Mini won’t mow your lawn, but it has a few key features — plumbed in way back then by Mr Issigonis — which have their counterpart on the big red zero-turn mowing machine. Firstly, the term ‘big’ is misleading — this is actually the smallest of the Ferris ZT range, with a 44-inch cutting deck and a tight, compact frame. Like the Mini, then, this machine has its wheels right at the periphery for nimble handling. It’s light, too, which means it’s easy to place just where you want it, like a Mini taking the racing line in the corners of a tricky rally. In the yard, as in the forests of a Finnish special stage, it’s all about getting the job done without ending up in the trees. With the 400S, as with the mini, there’s an art to this — the dark art of suspension tuning. Ferris has given their small zero-

turn some serious travel, with big coil springs ironing out the bumps, in the same way, that BMC equipped their little car with a clever pushrod system in its rear subframe. The result for both — compact size with the kind of ride usually associated with much bigger and plusher machines. Aside from a tight turning circle and a comfy ride, Ferris has played another classic car card — their small machine packs a hefty Kawasaki derived motor, delivering 21.5 hor sepower. p Red means go — the 400S by Ferris is a compact lawn care solution That’s enough not just to make the 400S quick across of yesteryear. Sir Alec built them tough the turf, but also to power its cutting — there are many still driving daily, blades through almost anything that even now — and he built them to be can photosynthesise. At least in the economical. Ferris has done the same, backyard. There’s another way in which and that means years of service for a the Ferris matches up to the classic Mini very reasonable price indeed. ¢

Set sail for fun u by Andy Bryenton

It’s ‘all hands on deck’ on February 23 as the Northern Wairoa Boating Club get ready for a big day on their calendar — the combination annual seagull race and raft race. This year there’s going to be plenty of action on the water, with hand-built rafts daring the waters with their intrepid crews, tiny outboards giving their all and even kayaks getting amongst the fun. Event organisers have played their cards right, using the nautical skills you would expect from our premier club of sea and river-faring sailors. The course for both races will take advantage of the tides, which change the mood — and some say the direction — of the Northern Wairoa River, making

for a safe but challenging course. Raft engineers are governed by a set of rules which make the whole challenge more interesting — no nails or screws may be used, meaning that each raft is constructed in the old fashioned way, with sailors’ knots and miles of rope! The seagull race is another old tradition

and takes its name from the tiny one to four and a half horsepower outboards, which were developed to power the little watercraft of fishermen and boaties. Some of the engines, which will buzz into life for the big event are serious antiques, kept alive by skilful restoration. There’s a second open class for up to 10hp, any make or model. Every boat in both races is restricted to this minimal level of power, making for nail-biting racing action. Without huge horsepower to lean on, it’s all up to the skill of the ‘hand on the tiller’. For the younger folks, there’s the chance to compete in a kayak race, which complements the

raft and seagull action, and also offers big prizes. Since that’s the major drawcard of the day for competitors — this year a band of generous sponsors have pitched in to make the competition even more hotly contested. Big cash prizes — $1,000 for the raft race winner, for example — are there to reward those who brave the big muddy river and come out on top. It’s a great reason to get a team together, find some barrels, planks and oars, and join the fun. One thing we know from previous years — you never can tell who is going to win!
