p Over 300 people drove, cycled, walked or swam to the sixth Kai Iwi Lakes Free Open Day, hosted by Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust last Saturday on the shores of Lake Waikare, in association with World Wetlands Day. Event manager Natalie Blandford said one of the objectives of the event, apart from having fun, was for people to get an understanding of the values and significance of the lakes and their wider catchment. “By being engaged through fun activities like snorkeling, waka ama and guided walks, people develop a sense of ownership and are inspired to help protect these internationally rare dune lakes,” said Natalie. Don’t be a spectator On Saturday, February 17 by-election votes will be counted for mayor of the Kaipara District Council, determining the leadership of the Kaipara for the next two years at least. With postal voting now under way, it’s timely to note that a healthy democracy depends on its voters, and Kaipara has had its fair share of trials over the past few years. Now we are governed by an elected body, after four years of appointed commissioners, and we need to ensure we take charge and be responsible for our own affairs long into the future. We need to get out and vote, each have our say, and provide the successful leadership candidate with the best mandate possible. Standing on the sidelines simply signifies apathy. By voting, you are engaging in an issue that will reflect upon your daily life, giving you a vested interest in local government. Your voice will be heard and contribute to making Kaipara a stronger place, with a voice in central government as well as a better place to live, work and play. Show you care about your family and community. Don’t put the responsibility upon others. By voting, you are making your voice heard and registering your opinion on how you think the Kaipara should operate. Your vote counts, and it is essential that you use it wisely and be a part of our future together. Allan Mortensen, Publisher ¢

Totara House at Matakohe is turning 122 this year and the Kauri Museum will be holding regular open seasons to recognise the important role the house plays in preserving local history.

A new motorhome and camper park-over site for members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) is expected to be open on River Road, Dargaville by the beginning of March.

p Totara House will be open to the public for four weeks to celebrate the 122nd birthday of the building

p Dargaville and Kauri Coast Information Site owner Sue Taylor says the new park-over sites’ proximity to town will be beneficial for the local economy

“We are currently setting up a site for our members’ use only on River Road,” says New Zealand Motor Caravan Association national policy and planning manager James Imlach. A concrete driveway is now complete at the entrance and the association is currently working through obtaining resource consent from the council. “It’s a temporary stopover for our members who travel in their certified self-contained motorhomes and campervans. It’s going to provide a safe and convenient place for them to park up while they are touring around the North,” says Mr Imlach. This is the only NZMC members’ only park-over site in Dargaville and will include a possible source of

water, rubbish and recycling bins. “Members who are travelling around Northland can now go to our site in Whangarei, Dargaville, Kerikeri and Tokerau Beach as part of a loop around Northland.” Dargaville and Kauri Coast Information Site owner Sue Taylor says this site is sure to be good news for the local economy. “It will bring people to town who would not normally stay here. They can walk everywhere, buy petrol, food, books. They can visit our information site and wood turners. They can even walk up to the museum. It’s a good central location.” The site will be policed by local custodians who will monitor it on a regular basis. ¢

Trail makes fitness safer

Regatta gets TV time

u by Ayla Miller

Cameras and producers for the television show Coast New Zealand, a joint Television New Zealand BBC programme that’s become a ‘must watch’ for viewers, have begun production for this year’s series, on the coast of the Kaipara Harbour.

Kaiwaka fitness enthusiasts will have a new place to stretch their legs with the establishment of a fitness trail at the Kaiwaka Sports Association (KSA).

A concrete path is being built to wind around the outside of the rugby fields, and will be wide enough for wheelchairs and strollers. It will be a vehicle width wide alongside the back tennis court to create access onto the fields for emergency vehicles. “We have often talked about the fact that people in Kaiwaka don’t really have anywhere to walk/run/ bike safely because of State Highway One running through the town, and we wanted to give our locals somewhere away from roads where they could exercise. Somewhere outside in the fresh

air and at no cost to them,” says Kaiwaka Sports Association manager, Cheryl Anderson. The trail is being funded by a grant from the Transpower CommunityCare Fund and as more funding is made available, the association plans to add exercise stations at intervals along the path. “One of the KSA’s goals is to improve the health of our community as well as providing sporting and recreational opportunities. “We see this fitness trail as a continuation of our efforts to improve the health and well-being of our community.” ¢

p Jacky Guerts, Coast New Zealand presenter

Producer and presenter Jacky Guerts headed a camera crew to the Pahi Regatta on Anniversary Weekend to capture launch and power boat races, and the seaside carnival atmosphere that has prevailed for more than a century at the site. “Jacky got into the swim of things and tried her hand at bathtub racing with

a local team,” said Claire Logan from production company Great Southern TV. The bathtub racing has been a regatta highlight for many years, and a more unusual coastline activity. The regatta segment will feature in Series Three of Coast New Zealand, later this year, which will be again hosted by Neil Oliver. ¢

Concern at marine safety breaches

Internet to drive census count

u by Ayla Miller

u by Mike Isle

Mangawhai community members have raised concerns over breaches of maritime rules in Mangawhai Harbour amounting to dangerous behaviour putting both swimmers and property at risk.

The ever-shifting shape of New Zealand will come under scrutiny in the 2018 census.

Northland Regional Council’s deputy harbour master Laurence Walkinshaw says this inconsiderate and dangerous behaviour within the Mangawhai estuary is not unique to the area and council has been experiencing similar issues in other harbours too — especially in the Bay of Islands. He says this area is extremely popular with visitors over holiday periods and long weekends, due to its proximity to Auckland and its sheltered nature. “Unfortunately, as with any large group of people, it’s a relatively small minority, which is ruining it for others.” Mr Walkinshaw says the busy local harbour warden is aware of the issues and works hard to stay on top of them, but adds the public and local community also have an essential role to play in holding people responsible. “The best way to assist is by submitting registration numbers along with photos — or preferably video — of any irresponsible behaviour.” Mr Walkinshaw says the registration numbers of any jet ski, boat/jet ski trailer or vehicles involved are helpful to the council when captured in photos or footage. “Meanwhile, for boat and jet ski owners themselves, it’s their responsibility to make themselves familiar with their obligations and responsibilities under our Navigation Safety Bylaw and

New Zealand holds a census every five years. The last one was in 2013 and this year it will take place on Tuesday 6 March with Statistics New Zealand aiming to collect most of the information it needs online. In February, they will send or deliver an access code to every household in New Zealand. Each household will have a unique code. Occupiers of the household can then use that code to access and complete the census form online on or before March 6 2018. People preferring paper forms will be able to request them after they receive their letter and access code from Statistics New Zealand, who will send them out for return post-free. The general manager of the 2018 Census, Denise McGregor, said the census is an important event and a crucial tool in planning New Zealand’s future. “Because the information we collect is

about everyone in New Zealand, it can be used to make informed decisions and plans about services and where they are most needed. Those services include hospitals, kohanga reo, schools, roads and public transport,” she said. However, personal information is kept strictly private, says Ms McGregor. “The information you share will be kept confidential by Statistics New Zealand and is protected by the Statistics Act 1975. Statistics New Zealand do not share information that can identify you as an individual with anyone.” Everybody who is in New Zealand on census day — March 6 — should take part, and that includes tourists and visitors. Further information on the 2018 Census can be obtained from the Statistics New Zealand website: census.govt.nz. ¢

PUBLIC NOTICE Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during February include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and grading of select roads pending sufficient rainfall. Area specific works planned during January include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the District. • Unsealed/Sealed pothole repair throughout the District when conditions are suitable. • Roadside vegetation spraying – Mangawhai area, and the southern side of SHW12 from Topuni to Ruawai. • Water table restoration – Batley Road, Bayleys Coast Road, Waimate Road. • Sealed Pavement Repairs – Throughout the Ruawai and Paparoa area. • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Tokatoka Road, Lusk Road, Birch Road. • Culvert Flushing –Tain Road, Dunn Road. • Culvert Replacement/Riprap – Bayleys Basin Road. We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of February if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue. Area specific works completed during the last month include: • Water table restoration – Hilliam Road, Keer Road. • Sealed Pavement Repairs – Dunn Road, Paparoa Oakleigh Road, Te Kowhai Road. • Culvert Renewals – Church Road Chamber installation. • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Monteith South Road, Cove Road, Bayleys Beach, Access Road, Curnow Road, Franklin Road, Matakohe Wharf Road. • Sight Improvements – Avoca Road. All routine work is done in cycles across the District. In endeavouring to provide good roads at the most economic cost, sometimes only spot grading and metalling is done as it is about one-quarter of the price of blanket metalling and grading that has tended to be done in the past. Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information

By-Election Voting for the Mayoral By-election occurs Friday 26 January to 17 February 2018. If you have not received a voting paper, please call 0800 922 822 to request a voting paper or a special vote pack.

NOTE FOR DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS Between November and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement. This introduces fresh aggregate into the failure, in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers.

Council would like to thank you for your co-operation as work is undertaken across the district to improve our communities and infrastructure. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information

Building a future

u by Ayla Miller

The Dargaville Community Development Board (DCDB) had a busy year in 2017 and are shaping up for another. “As a board we want to continue to engage with the community to facilitate projects the community have been consulted on and expressed a desire for,” says DCDB development manager Lorraine Davidson. Part of this was coming up with the ‘Building Block’ strategy, which is to work with stakeholders, the Kaipara District Council and the volunteer community to promote economic development in Dargaville. Last year also saw the Dargaville NZ website go live. This initiative works to attract new business, investment, residents as well as visitors. The DCDB was successful in securing a grant for a feasibility study to determine if a retirement village is achievable, which had positive results. “Now we are working on a business proposal and have a steering committee

with the appropriate skills and experience. We are looking at land along with design concepts and financial funding models,” says Lorraine. “The objective is to address decisions regarding funding, land and design by the end of the year.” The board is also working towards creating a coworking space/business hub to promote economic growth and community p Dargaville Community Development Board development manager Lorraine Davidson says 2018 is shaping up to be a revitalisation. They also busy year for the board aim to establish significant annual calendar events intended to initiatives.” Whilst these projects are further establish a branding identity taking shape, further beautification of for Dargaville. “We are delighted with the Dargaville area will continue as part the progress to date and the future of the ‘Placemaking Project.’ ¢

Roaming dogs cause nuisance u by Ayla Miller

A number of residents have reported their pet cats going missing or being killed in the central Dargaville area and believe roaming dogs are to blame. The Kaipara District Council website states owners are legally responsible for keeping their dog under control at all times. Owners who fail to do so risk a fine of up to $3,000 or an infringement fee of $200. Any wandering dogs can be impounded and if the dog is identifiable the owner will be notified. However, if a dog is not claimed after seven days it can be adopted out or put down. Armourguard regional manager Warwick Taylor says there is only one person on patrol 24/7 in the Kaipara area, however other resources are available depending on the demand. “When a complaint is lodged through the council a call then comes through to our officers who respond. There are daily patrols throughout the district monitoring all sorts of compliance. If there are any complaints of suspicious

activity, then an officer will go to investigate. “Evidence is key — photos, times, statements gathered through the investigation certainly assists with the follow up of the animal owner. If the dog is collected and chipped and the owner of the animal is located, we will talk to them about their responsibilities. If there is any breach of the animal control by-law then we will act on that based on evidence. “Dogs can wander long

distances, so it might not necessarily be the neighbour’s dog or the dog in the next street, so it’s not as straightforward as people might think it is.” Dargaville Vets advise people to make sure their dogs are chained up and registered to avoid any further unwanted attacks. Roaming dogs should be reported to animal management on 0800 10 58 90. ¢

THE BIGGEST OUTDOOR EVENT IN NORTHLAND

Thanks to you all 2017 was another full-on year for our Bird Recovery Centre. Not only did we make lots of new friends from New Zealand and around t h e wo rl d , we g ain e d a s t ro n g e r reputation and gained more support from so many people. I would p ar ticularly like to thank those that have been supporting us for many years. Mike Daniel (phone and power), Bayer New Zealand, Northpower, Northland Regional Council, Northland Seed & Supplies, Kiwi Timber, Mill Road Vets, Ship Repair NZ , Shop enze d . c om , Department of Conservation, Kamo Vets and Mad Butcher. Dedicated support is what keeps the Centre open to help many of the 1300 birds we receive each year. December is when we received a large number of native bird chicks – a morepork, very young tern, two baby penguins and a kiwi chick which was hatched in the Bayer incubation unit. With the hot weather around this summer please put out dishes of fresh water for birds. People with water troughs can lay a piece of 4x2 from the edge going into the water which takes the risk of drowning away. There are young kiwi chicks around this time of the year and they have a habit of walking from the bush or covered areas into the paddocks at night to get the moisture off the grass to drink. The trouble with the baby kiwi is they cover quite an area at night, only to find when the sun comes up they have nowhere to hide and they can die in the hot sun. Over the Christmas break we are open every day but at times we are short staffed and may be out getting supplies or picking up a bird, so it pays to ring 0276750564 or 09 4381457 to make sure we are at the Centre. If you leave a bird in the cages on the deck, remember to leave a contact number so we know where the bird needs to be returned once better. Small birds that are caught by a cat need to come to us ASAP, as a puncture wound from a cat claw is very toxic on the bird, as they have air sacks, not lungs, so if the claw punctures one it will blow up like a cow with bloat. It’s hard on the bird but we can fix this. We wish you all a successful, rewarding and happy 2018.

A GRAND OPENING ADVERTORIAL

Restoring or renovating your villa, bungalow, character or heritage building?

Time to get active There is a new business in town called TIME TO selling cycles, scooters, running and hiking gear and footwear. Situated at 45 Normanby Street, Dargaville, Time To is owned and operated by Sadie Parker and Des Cogan. They are partners in life, as well as business and started Bike Mangawhai from their home some three years ago, before selling up and moving to Dargaville to open Time To. “It’s perfect cycling country not exploited at this stage,” says Des. “There are wide roads and council plans to put more cycleways in. There’s a lot of potential for tourism here. “Dargaville is on the tourist route of the north, and already has the tour of Aotearoa and a tour of the North going through it.” Sadie rode mountain bikes for New Zealand at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. She rode internationally for the Helly Hansen/Giant team winning a street race in Germany. Also a national mountain bike champion, she started the Auckland Junior Mountain Bike Academy, known as the JAFAKIDS, coaching some sixty children mountain bike riding skills. She has participated in mechanic courses run by Shepherd Industries and is a very capable bike mechanic. In contrast Des is a ‘weekend warrior’ better known for his ability as a horseman. Although lacking ability on a bike he

GOLD CARD & HEALTH CARE ADVERTORIAL

Putting the joy back into your journeys Mobility scooters offer a better quality and ease of living for so many of our older citizens, that they have become a ubiquitous sight even in our rural town centres. With advancements in safety, range, ease of operation and carrying capacity, they bring the outdoors and freedom of the high street back to those who would have otherwise been housebound. And that’s a great thing, but what about spontaneity? What about being able to go along with friends on a road trip at the drop of a hat? How about heading off overseas or on a weekend getaway on an aeroplane? Tackling this next frontier in mobility was the challenge accepted by the designers of the SupaScoota, a mobility scooter, which approached the idea of mobility from a new angle. At heart it’s a simple idea. To add mobility — make the scooter itself mobile. If you could stow your mobility aid in the boot of the car, tuck it into the luggage compartment in the belly of a jet plane or even store it in a small space when visiting friends for the weekend, whole new areas would be opened up. After extensive design and testing work, they’ve done it. The SupaScoota arrives in New Zealand having gone through a battery of trials, and it’s been deemed so good that the Kiwi supplier now provides SupaScootas to the health department, and has seen them rented out via ACC for those who have suffered injuries.

Better than that, it’s been designed as a very compact package indeed. This scooter really does fit in the boot of a regular car, can slip into a cupboard out of the way, and has no trouble tackling the gravel driveways and paths found around Kiwi homes. With a ten kilometre range on a single charge, the SupaScoota is outfitted with electronic stability control like a modern car, independent suspension beneath the seat for comfort, and comes equipped with longlife lead-acid batteries rather than lithium units. These are not only inexpensive to replace during the projected long life of the machine, they are also used to allow the SupaScoota to be classified as safe by airlines. It’s actually free to take with you on holiday when you fly. If the idea of a mobility scooter appeals, but the thought of being unable to bring it with you on those spontaneous outings

A taste of rural life u by Ayla Miller

Have you ever wondered how far you can carry your spouse? The Northern Wairoa A&P Association is presenting the 125th annual Arapohue Show again this year and there promises to be a range of attractions to suit all ages.

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER  February 7 - 2018

Local shearers offer tough competition

Dargaville shearer Neville Osborne has starred in an open shearing final at Warkworth A and P Show that was effectively a match between Te Kuiti visitor Jack Fagan and Neville who “had it all in the speed stakes.”

p Sideshow activities are on offer for a gold coin donation at the Arapohue A&P Show this year

One of these novelty activities includes a ‘spouse carrying’ competition organised the Northern Wairoa Young Farmers Club. Show manager Nicky Poyner says the Arapohue Show has retained the traditional feel of a rural New Zealand A&P Show. “We’ve still got the old A&P way of doing things. We haven’t gone commercial.” There will also be sideshows available for a gold coin donation for the second year in a row. “We received a grant from Pub Charities for the sideshows, which allows us to offer this. It was very successful last year and that money goes toward running the event next year.” THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non–surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems. Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

Calf club will also be back for the third year running after a break of 35 years. “We want all the entries we can get,” says Nicky. Other categories include equestrian, livestock, shearing and the indoor section, as well as sideshow activities such as vertical bungy, water balls and many more. “I hope people will come away having had a good family day out.” The 125th annual Arapohue Show will be held on Saturday, February 10 from 9am at the Arapohue Showgrounds, 3338 Mititai Road. Gate entry to the show is $8 for adults, $15 for a couple, $2 for children 5 to 15 years and children under 5 are free. ¢

Dargaville shearing veteran Ralph Smith, 70, finished third. Shearing New Zealand spokesman Doug Laing said Neville “ripped through the 15 sheep in 11min 55sec.” “Fagan made it all up in quality points, to sneak home by 0.22pts, but Neville Osborne was placed first and second a week earlier at the Kaikohe show. “At Warkworth, Neville proved tough competition for Jack in a four-man final of 10 sheep each, despite Jack having shorn in many of the top competitions in New Zealand, UK and France,” said Mr Laing.

“Neville won the race by 37 seconds, in a time of 10 minutes 30 seconds — however Jack had the better quality points, which secured him a victory by 3.75 points.” The gun shearers are in Northland for the inaugural ANZ Northland Shearing Competition and will be at the Northland Field Days on February 10, and North Hokianga on February 17. The finals will be held in Kumeu on March 10. At Warkworth Courtney Flower, of Dargaville, won the Intermediate event, turning the tables on regular northern shows competitor Alan Boler, of Wellsford. ¢

Custom chrome in Dargaville For the second time the call has gone out — this time even further and wider. It’s an invitation to all owners of classic cars, hot rods, speed machines and customs. On two wheels and four — possibly even three — they’re all coming to the second annual ‘Hot Rods and Harleys’ show in Dargaville, celebrated on the February 24. Host club Dargaville Rod and Custom have teamed up with venue organisers and owners Greg Smith Engineering to make it all possible, transforming the Day Street premises of the engineering firm and anti-rust blasting company into a hub for automotive appreciation. They’re offering not just a feast for the eyes in terms of acres of chrome and steel, but also a literal feast in the form of a barbecue and a whole roast sheep on the spit. There’ll be music pumping thanks to a resident DJ, and plenty of like-minded auto and bike aficionados to talk to — a great get together for petrolheads and custom car enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Of course it’s no secret that the team at Greg Smith’s busy engineering company are fans of big horsepower and classic design. A visit there for any reason will often reveal a classic or hot rod in the shop awaiting some TLC from the lads. A fair number have come and gone over the last two years since Greg made the move to this big new premises in Dargaville’s industrial edge, and that’s been in-between a mountain of other engineering, blasting and painting work as the business grows. Recently, with the sale and repurposing of near neighbours Newman Engineering, Greg has acquired their industrial plasma cutter machinery, adding even more

A workhorse from China

Avoid Drink Driving

u by Andy Bryenton

be THe SOBER D FOr a NIGHT

With the rise of side-by-side off-road vehicles as the all-purpose workhorse for farmers in New Zealand, you could be forgiven for thinking that the ‘U’ in UTV stands for ubiquitous. Everywhere you go, you’ll see these tough little vehicles spraying weeds, carrying fencing tools or herding livestock. Now a new contender in the market looks to open up the UTV option for even more farmers, with advantages over the traditional quad bike. CFMoto may be a new name in the field, but they come with a powerful entry into the market in the form of their UForce 550. The product of over 20 years of liquid cooled engine technology from one of the biggest manufacturing companies in China, the UForce range is a distillation of what farmers want from a side by side, concentrated into a product, which ticks all the boxes. Ground clearance, the ability to handle deep mud and tough terrain, a reliable, easy to service engine — it’s all here, in a package which comes with a surprisingly economical price tag. The heart of the UForce 550 is a 498cc four valve, four-stroke liquid cooled engine developing 38 horsepower and 43 newton metres of torque. That’s plenty for most farming tasks, and combined with the low centre of gravity afforded by the placement of the compact engine block it means that the UForce 550 is a stable platform for all kinds of rural chores. Seating for two with a wide and capacious tray in the rear means lots of options — 360 kilos of load capacity with two up. Add

in a CVT transmission for smooth power delivery and the ability to switch from two to four wheel drive in the field, and you have a competent working machine ready to handle the hard knocks. What sets it apart from many contenders is the fact that this machine has not been engineered for hunting in the American wilderness or for recreational use on the trails — though it could accomplish either. Built in one of the world’s largest engineering and manufacturing centres, it’s been tested on the ground in some of the most demanding, isolated conditions of south Asia. Farms there have also seen the benefit of a tough little roll caged working machine with the economy and power balance of a 500cc mill — but of course, they lack the infrastructure of a First World economy like New Zealand and often boast higher

temperatures, deeper mud, worse roads and trails — the list goes on. If CFMoto can thrive in these conditions, they can excel on the farms of Northland. A large range of new CFMoto products will be on display at the forthcoming Northland Field Days, and they are well worth a look if you’re considering expanding your farm’s fleet.  ¢

The cornerstones of a perfect shed u by Andy Bryenton

Whether it’s a refuge from the world in which to pursue hobbies, a restoration centre for classics, a core part of a working farm or just a place to store the tools you need to be self-reliant, every shed should have certain core pieces, which open up the options for repairs, creativity and saving time. And while some tools — such as mitre saws or drill presses — are specific to certain tasks, there are some, which are able to be adapted for many different projects. Getting the right base model of these three makes all the difference. First up is a good-quality welder. Modern,

light-weight electric welders are a must for anyone working with or repairing cars, trucks, bikes or tractors, and they’re easier to use than many of the units of yesteryear. The compact size and weight of modern welding units means it’s easier to move around the project you’re working on or even team up with the second shed essential, a portable generator, for work outside the shed when needed. A good-quality generator is of great use for all kinds of projects where power is needed, but the mains won’t reach. Once again, smaller and lighter designs mean it’s simple to sling one of these on the back of the ute to tackle off the grid tasks. The core of picking a good generator is, of course, picking a reliable petrol engine. Bigger diesel units also exist, and can be a godsend on farms if the lights go out in a storm or other natural disaster, but for common use a petrol generator provides a good combo of affordability, size and output. Last, but by no means least, is the best friend of auto restorers everywhere — a quality air compressor. Whether you need to media blast, paint, power grinders, nibblers, shears, drills or simply

compressor to suit. Another important thing to take into account is reticulation of air hoses and lines. With these three cornerstones, your shed will be able to accommodate all kinds of work. DAE Group will be demonstrating a range of ‘shed essentials’ at their Field Days site, with this ‘big three’ and many others such as plasma cutters and water blasters built for serious work. Come and check out the necessities for keeping all your projects running smoothly. ¢

don’t want to spend all-day wrenching, a compressor does the job of a hundred other tools. That makes picking the right one essential — the tendency is to either go too small, reducing the scope of what can be achieved, or too big — taking time to reach working pressure and taking up space when it’s not really needed in a small garage or workshop. Experts agree that it’s best to work in reverse when fitting out this part of the shed — look at the requirements your air tools need to work best, and buy the

Another election that you didn’t want or need. If you have not yet voted in the Kaipara Mayoral by-election, I would be grateful if you would read this. I am Bruce Rogan, standing for the Kaipara mayoralty. There are eight people standing, one of whom is a first term councillor. If that person is elected there will have to be yet another election. What is the present situation? The Kaipara is in very deep financial trouble. The evidence? Five chief executives in as many years and the elected mayor has been unable to serve out his term and has resigned. Note also the state of the districts roads. And note the frantic gouging for money through ridiculously outrageous fees. What will I do if you choose me? I’m not making promises I cannot keep. I WILL: 1. Put you the ratepayers front and centre of every decision council makes . 2. Genuinely consult you BEFORE any decision and we will listen to your views. 3. Subject all significant new borrowing to a binding referendum. 4. Establish an ombudsman to resolve disputes non-litigiously. 5. Move to purchase all professional and contracting services from local or regional suppliers. 6. Conduct all council business out in the open. 7. Work full time and I will stay the course. 8. Have the CEO report to the council, a reversal of the present situation.

Every year Kaipara borrows money to pay the interest on past loans. That is how they stay “afloat” The LGFA lends this money, using you as the backstop. One candidate (who supposedly knows) even told an audience that Kaipara was exactly like a person who had maxxed out their credit card and was just paying off enough each month to avoid ruin. It doesn’t have to be like this Much of the debt is illegal, and there’s is an unchallenged High Court declaration to that effect which has not been acted on. So, together, lets ACT. Am I qualified to serve? My dad was born and raised in Te Kopuru. We have owned our place here for twenty five years and I have lived here for the last twelve. I served on the council for one full term 2001-2004. I have extensive relevant managerial and financial experience in the public and private sectors. I am prepared to work full time to restore prosperity to this wonderful place. I don’t give up when things get rough. If you want things to improve VOTE (1) for Bruce Rogan. By their own admission nobody else standing is going to deal with the debt problem, and progress to prosperity depends on that. Please give me, and more importantly yourself, the chance to improve things here.
