Saluting a harbour heroine The lady behind the microphone and radio link who has co-ordinated communications through uncounted rescues around the Kaipara is receiving tangible recognition from her peers The Kairpara boating community is being called on to get behind a big thank-you to a heroine of the harbour, North Kaipara Coatguard’s long-serving volunteer radio operator stalwart, Dorothy Quaife QSM. “For a virtually unbroken 17 years Dorothy has been manning the radio, keeping track of Kaipara harbour boat movements, and swinging the emergency services and coastguard units into action when anything untowards happens,” said launch owner, Barry Mockett. “So the three Kaipara boat clubs have got together and we are giving Dorothy’s house a major makeover.” The makeover consists of a professional and complete exterior painting. “In fact, we have had the roof done already, with contractor Leon Weber giving a good discount. Now we are looking to the community at large to chip in for the remainder of the house to be done.” Dorothy is and has been the official voice and ears for the North Kaipara Volunteer Coast Guard for the last 17 years but her service to her community goes well beyond this. With her late Husband Ansel Quaife, along with good friends Fred and Noreen Mays she helped set up the Kaipara Marine Radio Group in the early 1970’s and together they self funded and set up the first marine CB base station on Pouto Point. And for the last 17 years, it has been eight hours a day seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year at the radio, watching over thousands of people out on the water. Under her watch, the system of radio relays around the Kaipara has been steadily up-graded, as the coastguard movement grew, with the most recent installation a relay transmitter at Tinopai. This has enabled boats to make contact easily in what was once a dead spot on the harbour.

A bicycle built for one A heavily-moustached gentleman clad in Victorian costume and riding an 1880’s penny-farthing bicycle made an unusual visitor to The Kauri Museum at Matakohe last week. David Wilson is sponsored by the North Otago Museum in his journey to Cape Reinga to promote the Victorian Precinct in Oamaru, a redevelopment to show a Victorian town at work. He is also the (rather grand sounding) New Zealand Wheelman and Captain of the Oamaru Ordinary (High Wheeler) Cycle Club and is mapping out a proposed tour for a planned international gathering of penny farthing enthusiasts in 2014. He travels with two days of food, a camera, a tent, a hammock and one change of clothes aboard his machine. “Being volunteer’s day at the museum, the engine David Wilson visiting the Kauri Museum on his way to Cape Reinga enthusiasts and textiles ladies took an immediate liking to David and the front of the museum with David atop. David his gusto for all things heritage,” said museum gained even more applause by cycling safely CEO, Bet Nelley. around the Volunteer’s Hall and dismounting “Before you knew it there was a fully without any harm to himself, the displays or operational penny farthing doing figure eights at the surrounding crowds.”

Painting the Hunt — and the Kaipara Kaipara-based poet extraordinaire, Sam Hunt, is off on a new adventure in art in collaboration with high profile artist, Dick Frizzell. Together they will present a new exhibition of Frizzell’s paintings entitled, Painting the Hunt, at Wellington’s PageBlackie Gallery which will run from February 7. And prominent among the works on display will be an iconic Hunt tribute to Dargaville. “Dick Frizzel is one of New Zealand’s most successful contemporary artists and the paintings on show capture Sam Hunt’s wonderful poetry in a striking way,” said a gallery insider. PageBlackie’s Kate Barlow said the exhibition will be opened by both men, and on Wednesday, February 8, the gallery will host An Evening With Sam Hunt, from 6pm. “I like very much what Dick does with the poems — the places he takes them,” Sam told The Lifestyler. “I get to see my poems in, literally, a different light — another person’s light — Dick Frizzell’s. I have always liked his work and I fell in love, years ago, with his illustrated book of Denis Glover’s ‘The Magpies’ — a New Zealand classic, that one”!

Contributions to the big thank you project can be made through the Pahi Regatta Club, Ruawai Boating Club or the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, and at Tinopai Boating Club as well as Mike Nola Sports in Dargaville and c/Northland Boating Centre.

A date with a lake

A unique opportunity to get down and personal with the underwater world of the Kai Iwi Lakes takes place on February 18 with a free community snorkelling fun day. It’s being held under the auspices of the Experience Marine Reserves — or EMR — group which is supported by Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and the Department of Conservation. “The event will be held between 10am and 3pm at Lake Waikere, Kai Iwi Lakes, adjacent to the ski club there,” said organiser, Kim Jones. “People will be able to experience the underwater wonders of the lakes and displays about the unique life including fish species, freshwater crayfish, and native New Zealand plants. “They will learn about what is threatening these beautiful lakes and how they can help. “Bring your own gear or get free use of our masks, snorkels, fins and wetsuits.” The event is recommended for everyone five years and over. All children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult. Experienced guides and advanced safety procedures will be in place on the day. There will be a sausage sizzle fundraiser. This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Encounter with a kayak by Paul Campbell On a recent trip down through the Funnel bound for the region of the Green buoy and some serious snapper fishing, a small craft off Tinopai caught my eye. It was obviously a canoe of some sort, but seemed to be drifting — it certainly wasn’t being paddled anyway. The skipper decided to nose gently over, just to check all was well with the lone occupant. Then, as we got nearer, we realised the chap on board was lifting a rod. He was quietly fishing! I had heard of the sport, but rather dismissed the idea as an eccentricity of sorts. It wasn’t until I met the kayak fisherman, for such he termed himself, at a barbecue gathering ashore a few days later that I learned just how wrong I was.

It seems it is a fast rising sport on the New Zealand coastline and kayak fishermen even land trophy fish. Graham, for such was the name of the kayaker of my encounter, said the Kaipara was ideal for his sport. “In most weathers there is always a nice lee shore where I can paddle out and catch a feed,” he said. This is particularly true in the Funnel and north to the Otamatea and the Arapoa. I determined to learn more, and of course, it’s all in gigabytes on Google. Kayaks can be purchased inexpensively and have low maintenance costs and you could be well-equipped for a good bag of fish for between $500 to $1,000. But after that the sky is apparently the limit and there are a multitude of companies dedicated to the sport, with custom kayaks and fishing gear, including sophisticated electronics, that would rival the inventory of a commercial charterboat. One US site even offers an on-kayak stereo system.

Favoured for fishing are craft of peraps a metre in beam, for stalility, and these can contain storage space for rods and assorted fishing gear, batteries for fish finders, extra paddles, anchors, and food and of course, the odd cold beer. Some anglers launch kayaks from larger boats well offshore to go after gamefish. It adds to the fun, I’m told. (I’m not so sure I’d fancy a mako on the line in such circumstances.) While Graham says he’s quite content with the northern Kaipara waters, he has mates who revel in the open waters off the west coast. And in my surf round the Internet, I was hugely impressed with the catches documented. So it seems that for a relatively few dollars, anyone can supplement the seafood larder. And novices at the kayaking game only have to note that a great supporter of the burgeoning sport is four-time Olympic gold medal winner, Ian Ferguson — who now runs a kayak shop just down the road in Auckland. You probably couldn’t fault his advice, if kayak fishing appeals. I’m certainly starting to talk myself into a bit of a paddle.

The 125th annual Pahi Regatta has produced a new champion — a hat-trick in the bathtub racing event. Young Codi Smith (pictured above in the black t-shirt and right, sprinting for the chequered flag) was the skipper in the Airfoam team for the race, for out-rigger equipped bathtubs powered by two-horsepower outboards over a three-leg course. For the third year running, the Airfoam team took out the $1,000 first prize.

Applications close on Monday, March 16, with decisions due in April. The winning post looms for the third year in a row

“The regatta went very well, although the numbers of people seemed to be down this year, maybe because of our indifferent summer,” said regatta club commodore, Justin Healey. “But we still had 12 launches racing and six runabouts The Miss Pahi contest was up in entries and had a great number of spectators. As usual the bathtub race was hugely popular with 13 entries and a huge number of spectators cheering them on. All in all it was a great weekend.”

A Kaipara canine champ First place in the novice class at the New Zealand Kennel Club’s 40th Anniversary Championship Obedience competition in Rotorua for 18-month-old Border Collie, Cooper, has resulted in more silverware for his owner and trainer, Laurel Greaves. “I’ve been training Cooper on the shores of the Kaipara, as the competition was an open-air event beside Lake Rerewhakaaitu over Anniversary Weekend,” said Laurel. “He had 40 other really good dogs to compete against and he did all the required exercises. It was a lovely surprise when we were called up into 1st place with 99.5 points out of 100.”

Horror movies come to life in Waipu

On the 24th of February 2012 the Zombie Apocalypse will begin — in Waipu. Infected with a deadly pathogen, the newly deceased will return from the grave to hunt down the living — who will take the fight to the hungry undead with powerful weapons and fortifications. No, this isn’t a doomladen prediction of violence — it’s all in good fun, and the ‘zombies’ will take turns with the ‘survivors’ as hunters and hunted in a thrilling interactive, immersive game of tag using Airsoft weapon technology. Supervised by the experienced team at the Northland Airsoft Centre, the so called Zombie Infection! event is a chance to live through scenes from horror classics like Dawn of the Dead and hit video game franchise Resident Evil — all without the threat of actually being eaten. In normal games of Airsoft competitors use replica guns to ‘tag’ each other with safe plastic pellets while wearing safety masks and armour. This time five ‘survivors’ will face a horde of the living dead, and will have to tag the shambling zombies to send them back to their graves while trying to beat the clock. Smoke machines, spooky lighting and a custom-made huge indoor arena set the scene for the most fun you can have outside of your

With 9 years of dairy farming experience behind her, Nicola Law has a keen insight into the business of agriculture. So much so that when she travelled to the U.K. to work on a dairy farm there she was asked for advice on how to run an agri-business “the Kiwi way”. Knowledge and experience like Nicola’s are two of the reasons New Zealand is a dairying world leader, and that’s why it’s great news for local farmers that she’s now working with agricultural company Altum – once known as Summit Quinphos Fertilizers. Part of Altum’s strength lies in their program of extensive soil and herbage testing and analysis, which can help inform farmers of the nutrient needs of their soil for seasons to come. Nicola uses take the data from a soil test to work out exactly what tailored blend of Altum minerals and nutrients a farm needs to meet peak production. A proper assessment also means dramatically reduced leaching of minerals after heavy rain, eliminating loss and protecting waterways. Nicola loves seeing the results of her work as she travels from farm to farm – healthy green pasture on the hills and plains mean that both she and Altum are doing a great job! Right now it’s time for farmers to plan their autumn fert requirements, and also to take steps to combat facial eczema. These are both areas where Altum can be of assistance, so look out for them at stall 96 this Field Days, under the bright green banner.

Record crowd hopes for Field Days

New Ruawai Kindergarten takes shape

Prizes worth a combined $20,000 are up for grabs — just for being at the 2012 Northland Field Days. Organisers have worked with a number of sponsors to put together two massive gate prize packs including a quad bike, a kayak, a portable hot house and a portable 5000-litre water tank. It’s hoped the event will attract a record crowd to Dargaville over the three days from March 1. “We actually think there might be 26,000 people this year with the fatter payouts and better season,” said Northland Field Days president, Lew Duggan. “I am blown away by what people from the community have been prepared to give. There are some very special businesses out there that are more than happy to share their good fortune.” There were two gate prizes on offer, a rural gate prize that is only available to farmers and a lifestyler prize which is available to everybody Mr Duggan predicted 20% more people to come than last year due to better farm economic conditions. The previous record was 24,000 in 2010. With commodity prices being high and stable farmers were in a better position than they were 12 months ago. “Last year Northland was in the middle of one of the region’s worst droughts,” said Mr Duggan. “This year we have had one of the best summers ever and prices for milk, meat and wool are

7

staying high. If the numbers increase and spending remains as high as last year then the event and exhibitors could be looking at the biggest event ever.” With more Auckland and Whangarei workers commuting from rural areas in the Kaipara and choosing to work from home the Northland Field Days has seen an increase in the number of urban visitors.

The new building development for Ruawai Kindergarten is coming along beautifully with significant progress being made over the summer break on the build, with the driveway and parking areas being completed along with the building foundation and framework. “The new building which is located next to the Ruawai Primary School and adjacent to Ruawai College on State Highway 12 will create an ‘education hub’ for Ruawai and Kaipara communities” said the Head teacher, Sara McKinley. “The kindergarten will have the capacity to be licenced for a maximum of 40 children, which will also require the kindergarten to employ more registered and qualified early childhood teachers.

The Northland Kindergarten Association anticipate the opening date of their new building to be early in term two this year although the actual date will depend on the weather and the building programme. “In the interim, staff at Ruawai Kindergarten plan to hold a massive garage sale which will assist with the purchase of equipment and materials for the new building” said Sara. Regular updates and photos can be viewed on the Ruawai Kindergarten Facebook page. In the meanwhile, come and visit the kindergarten at 29 Wharf Road, Ruawai. The kindergarten takes enrolments for the waiting list from birth.

“Our event provides perfect opportunities for merging town and country and allowing further insight and understanding between our rural agriculture and urban sectors. We’re known as being the ‘friendly field days’ and being friendly means being all-inclusive,” said Mr Duggan. “There will be something at the Northland Field Days for every single person, no matter their interest or circumstances.” Rules and contents of the gate prizes are at www.northlandfielddays.co.nz.

Significant progress has been made over summer on Ruawai’s new kindergarten

Warning on driving test change The move by the New Zealand Transport Agency to withdraw restricted and full practical driving licence tests for Class 1 Driver licences from Dargaville — and a host of other New Zealand towns — to major urban centres, could mean fewer licensed drivers on the roads This is the view of Kaipara driving instructor, Garry Corbett, who says people may be reluctant to travel to Whangarei for their tests. “We’re going to see fewer licenced drivers on the roads,” he said. “Our at risk youth will still be driving, regardless of whether they have a licence or not.” Mr. Corbett says he understands the reasons

for centralising the tests in Whangarei but is concerned about the effects. The new test is longer, taking up to an hour. He agrees with the ideas behind the move but not the argument that Kaipara doesn’t have the traffic volumes or variety of driving environment to meet the test requirements. “At different times, the traffic volumes in Dargaville can be heavier than in Whangarei, and having no traffic lights means students have to think more carefully about how intersections work,” he says.

“Your Friendly Local Auto Specialist!”

Driving instructor Gary Corbet — understands the reason for the changes, but is concerned about the effects

Mr Corbett feels that if you can drive in Kaipara, you can drive anywhere. All his students learn to drive on gravel roads which he describes as a very different experience from driving on sealed roads. He adds that he is in discussion to arrange a practical working agreement with Whangarei instructors to allow him to pass local students on for the final couple of lessons to fully prepare them for the restricted and full driver licence tests there Practical driver tests for Class 2, 3, 4 and 5 licences can all still be completed in Dargaville with the Kaipara Driving Academy. Theory tests and bookings for practical tests are also available through Dargaville Driver Licensing Centre.

FEBRUARY 8 - 2012

Ford fills the trophy cabinet with 2011 accolades As is traditional for the end of a busy year in the automotive sector, groups of experts have been putting their heads together recently to decide just which cars, vans, utes, SUVs and motorcycles were the cream of the crop for the last 12 months — the stand out performers in a very competitive field. As these groups are empanelled (and we’re talking top motoring journalists and pundits from famous websites, TV shows and newspapers under the heading of the Motoring Writers Guild) the manufacturers are left in the same nervous state as school kids waiting for exam results. Well, the people have spoken, and the results for 2011 are in. And leading the charge to the trophy cabinet this year is Ford, whose ‘world car’ programme has turned out some stunning new vehicles of late, including award winners like the Focus and Ranger. What can we say about the new Focus? It’s been minutely dissected by the same press who have now declared it overall New Zealand Car of the Year, taking in features such as it’s responsive yet economical power plant, its sleek styling, and its almost uncanny ability to park itself. The old Ford Focus was no slouch — a rally-winning little battler that was well mannered on the road as well. But the new Focus is ahead of its time when compared with many of its competitors. A

deserving winner of the top spot for 2011, and well worth a test drive just to see why. A similar paradigm shift is apparent in the Ranger — a ute which blends the unstoppable power (and some of the styling) of the legendary F150 (at one point they were selling one of these a minute in the USA) with the practicality and toughness we demand in the Kiwi back country. Idle talk? No — AMI Insurance and NZ Autocar magazine agree, awarding the new Ranger their overall Car of the Year award, and following that up by crowning the big Ford Best Ute as well. It’s the first time ever that a ute has won the ‘best overall car’ badge, and a drive in the Ranger will show you why — for all that solid metal grunt you’d swear you were riding in a luxury sedan when you get the Ranger onto suburban tarmac. “With the Focus winning the Guild award, 2011 has been a fantastic year for Ford,” said Neale Hill, Managing Director of Ford New Zealand. “It’s certainly a sign that our One Ford plan is working. Perceptions about Ford continue to strengthen, thanks to our ongoing introduction of new vehicles that are leading in quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value.” Of course your local Ford dealership are celebrating too — stop by and see Lindsay and the team at Dargaville Ford to find out why the marque led a clean sweep of the big awards this year.

Valentines Day A day for true romance — Kaipara style It’s that time of year again — the celebration of love presided over by Cupid. After all, who would know more about romance than a flying baby with a bow and arrow? Valentine’s Day goes back as far as Roman times, when the Christian Saint Valentine first introduced marriage to the people of Rome. It wasn’t a popular concept at the time, but soon the idea caught on, leading to centuries of ‘funniest wedding videos’ and dodgy gifts at bachelor parties. Today there are those who might

Valentines Day

Give your loved one a memory that will last a lifetime this

say that Valentine’s Day is a commercial holiday — that it’s not for the rugged Kiwi bloke and his down-to-earth better half. These people are usually the ones left sleeping on the couch when they go fishing on the 14th instead of enjoying a candlelit dinner for two. Modern New Zealand men are in touch with their feelings — and not only when the All Blacks lose a match, meaning that Valentine’s Day is a big deal for even the ‘strong silent types’. Another popular option on Valentine’s

Day is the tradition of breakfast in bed — for some men, this translates to romantically setting the kitchen on fire then spilling runny egg yolk on the freshly washed pillowcases. For those with kids ‘helping’, it means a food fight akin to world war three which ends with everyone going out to a cafe instead. This year we’ve got all kinds of great ideas to celebrate the love of your life — no matter what they’re into. You’ll find gifts from the simple (a dozen roses are always well received) to the personal, dedicated, romantic and fun. And if you’re searching for a little inspiration, call one of the local businesses on this page — they’ll soon have you sorted out. With the help of these folks you’ll be able to put on some Barry White, pop the cork on some bubbly and make the 14th a day to remember!
