“It is very humbling because when I set out to do this work with the brown teal, I did not expect an accolade.” Ruawai identity Kevin William Evans has received The New Zealand Order of Merit MNZM ‘for services to wildlife conservation and the community.’ The simple message of merit belies an effort Mr Evans has undertaken for many years. Not only in saving an endangered native bird species but also as a long-term volunteer firefighter and chief officer at the Ruawai Fire Brigade, which was called out 170 times last year. The award citation states: ‘Mr Evans is the Captive and Reintroduction Coordinator for the Department of Conservation’s Pāteke (brown teal) Recovery Group, a voluntary position he has held since 1998. He has played an integral role in the Pāteke’s recovery from endangered to recovering status, as the population has increased from just 700 birds to more than 3,000 over 20 years. ‘He manages the network of 16 volunteer captive p Kevin Evans, New Zealand Order of Merit recipient breeding facilities across New Zealand which is the largest and most Instructor for the New Zealand Mountain successful bred for release programme Safety Council for 20 years. “There are lots of turning wheels and nuts and bolts involved with managing a species recovery programme, which covers the entire length and breadth of the country and is sometimes more of a juggling act,” Kevin says. ”It involves managing and coordinating the logistics of a network of up to 20 volunteer captive breeding facilities, which collectively produce between 150–200 birds for release back into the wild at up to four different locations around NZ in any given year. “With planning starting five or more years in advance, the process has become a pretty well-oiled machine. These days, we have pretty well-tried and tested release protocols with a fairly good idea on how much predator control needs to be in place to keep the pāteke alive and how many pāteke we can fit into any given area, depending on the quality of the habitat.” Kevin travels from Northland to Christchurch to oversee the three-day process of attaching radio transmitters, metal and colour leg bands, weighing, deworming and recording bird details in preparation for the next step, which is sending them to be released back into the wild.

p Voices joined in as karakia and waiata swirled around the Kaipara Harbour when a dawn blessing was performed to open the new Pahi wharf pontoon as 2021 drew to its final days. The wharf upgrade is part of Kaipara KickStart, an umbrella programme led by Kaipara District Council with the support of PGF funding. Kaipara District Council delivery manager Joanne Reid attended the blessing on behalf of the KDC project team. “Our team is now gearing up to deliver the next wharf in the programme, coming to Poutō in 2022,” she said. Coastguard on the water
Skating for gold
p The Coastguard North Kaipara vessel Manaia paid a visit to the Tinopai School Fishing Contest’s fleet on the water in January, and the crew had something to celebrate. The team on board had just received new levels of qualification, enabling them to serve the maritime community better.
p With skateboarding set to become an Olympic sport, the Kiwi hopefuls vying for a place in the nation’s skate team hit the road to promote their code, bringing the action to Mangawhai’s MAZ skatepark. A huge novelty board, the world’s biggest, came with the crew, who wowed the locals and shared their vision of gold medal glory.
A time to remember
Green gold for kindergarten
p After a Covid-related cancellation of dawn services in 2020, last year’s Anzac Day events were exceptionally well attended. People of all ages gathered at memorials and cenotaphs across the Kaipara to pay their respects to those who served and those who gave their lives defending the nation’s freedom in times of war.
p Ruawai Kindergarten won the top accolade from the Enviroschools initiative in July, reaching the green gold standard for educating young Kaipara children about, and among, sustainability.

Three Waters in spotlight
KAIPARA LIFESTYLER January 11 2022
A bite of victory
5
p Council infrastructure executives Jim Sephton and Sue Davidson updated a tense Kaipara District Council meeting in August as the government’s contentious Three Waters reforms were tabled. The debate would grow to encompass every regional and civic council in the nation, with rejection, rebellion and protest following the mandating of changes to water infrastructure by MP Nanaia Mahuta.
Racecourse development p It was the year of the shark on the rugby field, as the Western Sharks formed a formidable team, trained hard, and went on to beat all comers at the Northland championships. The hard-won victory against runners-up Mid-Northern was followed by a well-deserved celebration bringing the skills of the local athletes to national prominence.
p Throughout the year, work was ongoing on plans to transform Dargaville’s now-closed racing club venue into a new precinct for the town. Late in the year, a presentation was made to the Kaipara District Council featuring an architect’s impression of the racecourse development as envisioned; a boost for housing, retirement living, local industry and employment. Former Dargaville Racing Club president Tim Antonio has been a stalwart supporter of the concept from its inception, along with a consortium of community groups seeking advancement for Dargaville.

Supporting Mangawhai sports Celebrating vibrant culture
p The Kaipara District Council awarded $85,698 to the Mangawhai Activity Zone, boosting plans to finish what will become the only Olympic grade skatepark in the country and numerous other sporting facilities. Host to major competitions, family barbecues and friendly games of basketball, tennis and soccer, the volunteer-run MAZ has grown to become a significant community asset.
Rotarians rebuild
p Dargaville High School’s kapa haka group displayed outstanding stage presence at the 2021 Te Tai Tokerau Festival in Whangārei last June, impressing the judges and their competitors alike with their strong cultural performance skills. Rodney, Bay of Islands and Far North high schools all travelled to perform at the festival, which returned after a 2020 Covid-19 hiatus.
Maungaturoto Dementia care
When Maungaturoto’s Piroa Falls track was in dire need of repair, the town’s Rotary club swung into action, heading out into the bush last May to tackle the task. They followed in the footsteps of earlier Rotary members, who established the popular walking track and kept it accessible throughout the 1980s. p Four years in the making, Maungaturoto’s new dementia unit is the fruition of a community vision to care for elderly locals and keep them close to their families. The successful completion of construction saw the unit rise via grassroots funding and hard work, despite Covid-19 disruptions.

In 2022, parents and caregivers will be able to get their 5 to 11-year-olds immunised against COVID-19 Some tamariki get very ill from catching COVID-19 and immunisation is one of the best ways to protect them.
Safety of the COVID-19 vaccine
Immunisation is an important way we keep tamariki safe, like being sun smart or wearing a seatbelt.
The child (paediatric) Pfizer vaccine has gone through the same rigorous approval process as other routine childhood immunisations. No clinical trials were skipped and no corners were cut in the testing of its safety.
It protects your tamariki from many serious diseases and stops disease spreading within your whānau and the community. In Aotearoa, tamariki get free vaccinations against 12 diseases, including whooping cough (pertussis), measles and polio.
The Pfizer vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds has been through clinical trials with children in this age group. In general, the side effects that were reported were mild, didn’t last long, and were similar to side effects from other routine immunisations.
Take time this summer to get the information and advice you need to make the best decision for your tamariki. p It was a golden moment for the Hikuwai o Kaipara Waka Ama Club Kaipara crew, as they surged to victory in the open masters’ division of the 29th annual Portage Crossing event. A waka ama race in the path of the legendary ocean waka Tainui, this tournament was hotly contested by teams from around the nation.
Vaccine roll-out begins p Local man Ian Humphries was pleased to have attended the Pahi Boating and Fishing Club’s open fishing contest in March. While he didn’t land the biggest fish, Ian (left) was delighted to win a big spot prize as anglers took to the water. The biggest snapper landed was a 7.5-kilogram catch, proving that the big ones are out there.
THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non–surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems. Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. p The central victory or core controversy of 2021, depending on opinion, the government’s vaccine roll-out to combat Covid-19 saw millions of doses of the Pfizer vaccine administered. Between the beginning of the initiative in May and the closing of the year, 90 per cent of Kiwis were given a double dose of the medicine free of charge, with sports clubs, health providers and volunteers helping out.
The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

Feeding a hunger to learn Kitchen contest heats up
p Changes to how students eat rolled out across many of our local schools in 2021. School lunch programmes were introduced to level the playing field nutritionally and steer young learners away from foods and drinks high in sugar and caffeine. Dargaville High School installed a new cafeteria and kitchen to deliver nutritious fuel for educational success.
11
p Dargaville’s first big bake-off raised funds to fight cystic fibrosis while at the same time bringing out some culinary creative genius. A party atmosphere pervaded the final showdown as crowds watched amazing cakes take shape before a panel of judges crowned Todd Cobbin as Dargaville’s baking king.
Massed ukes make merry From racing to rescue
p Kerri Russell and the Dargaville Ukulele Orchestra swing into practice on a winter’s night in July, bringing some tropical tones to the town hall. The uke orchestra has become a favourite fixture at local concerts and variety performances, and it’s as much a social group as it is a collection of musicians.
p The North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard welcomed a new, advanced vessel last December. The Tinopai Rescue came from service in the America’s Cup. It was built to shadow the racing yachts on the Hauraki Gulf. The boat has been converted for life-saving purposes representing a leap forward in maritime technology.

Q: Do i need to be referred by a gp to see a physio? A: No - there’s no need to be referred to your local physiotherapist by a general practitioner. With summer on the way, with new sports codes to play, and many outdoor pursuits to enjoy, many people consult a physiotherapist without a GP’s referral to ensure that old injuries don’t recur, aches and pains from winter are banished, and they can enjoy a fun and relaxed summer doing the things they love.

Stay safe and enjoy summer 2022 by Andy Bryenton
It’s back to work for many this week, though buoyant tourist numbers and continued fine weather mean that there’s still plenty to enjoy outdoors. With locals and visitors providing a boom season for hospitality and retail across the Kaipara, there are also many cautionary warnings from safety authorities regarding driving, boating and swimming, fire and water use. Water Safety New Zealand, the Coastguard and surf lifesavers are united in urging caution and vigilance while around salt and freshwater, after several drowning incidents in the north. Additionally, locals returning to work and guests unfamiliar with country roads have been cautioned to watch their pace and stay safe on Kaipara roads after the holiday road toll of 17 prompted a call for safer regional roads from parliamentarian Steven Joyce. Local authorities and fire and emergency services are urging caution. They have refrained from imposing blanket bans and restrictions across the Kaipara this summer. The fire status for the region remains at ‘open’, with a reminder to check for safety warnings online with Fire and Emergency New Zealand for activities such as hangis, bonfires, rubbish fires, incinerator use and barbecues. Meanwhile, water restrictions have also been waived in the Kaipara, with people

FARMING
A dog’s tail …
Tha yeer lookin’ okay, Boss sez Gidday there readas. Just wen you mite have missed me kolumn an’ forgotten me, it’s Billy Borda Colly back with ya, here ona farm wiv The Boss, an’ his gerfren’, Sharlene. We hada a bitova knees up ina woolshed in Noo Yeers Eve, an’ Boss reckins he not havin’ a beer until nek year. Yeah, rite I reckin. No chance. Anyway, Sharlene sez it’s high time we have a proppitty check, cos she keeps the farm books ona komputa thingy in her office, witch she lets me use ter do this kolimn for ya. She tries ter teech me the school spellin’ of werds but hell, typing with paws is diffikilt enuff. Well, the first smoko we had ona woolshed steps was last week after Boss got over the party, an’ Sharlene give a bit of a talk about the farm “in this year of 2022.” She hada report from her komputa about stuff, but Boss was more wurried about “too much govmint interference ina farmin’ community.” Sharlene agreed an’ sed the guvmint still talkin’ about water rules and environmint stuff, witch can make life diffikilt. She red her bank stuff in her skoolteacher voice that she uses wen shen has the kids at the lokil skool. “Farm expenditure is forecast to increase, driven by a sharp lift in fertiliser prices. Farmer confidence is mixed. While on-farm profitability is positive, resilience is being tested by the volatility of adverse weather events and the extent of environmental regulation.” “Yep” saida Boss. “But the biggest thing we gotta wurry about is that coronyvirus, witch is still mucking us around. Ya dunno wen the blimmin borders mite close again,
and alla supply chain gets crook. Still we lucky bein’ here ona farm. Don’t havta ware masks like we saw ina towns.” “Anyways, deah,” Sharlene sed, “it’s not all doom and gloom.” She grabbed her bank paper in one hand an’ slipped be a whole halfa scone, wile Boss was slurpin’ his cuppatees an’ not lookin’. “The outlook for global sheepmeat and beef demand is positive. Key markets are solid, with strong demand and tight supply. Fonterra expects good milk returns. Global demand for sheepmeat and beef is well exceeding supply. Revenue from sheep, including a modest lift in wool prices, underpins the forecast for improved profitability.” Well, readas, that made Boss hava big smile. “Well Dog,” he sed ter me, “I reckin you an’ Sharlene, an’ me betta hitch the boat ona ute. This beaut whether is still holdin’ so we shud head of ter Pouto and do a spot of fishin’. The year looks like we shud still make a dolla or too.” Sharlene agreed. “We kin take the tent, tha barbie an’ eskys for sum food and beers.” Boss didn’t object to more beers eh readas? Anyway, beach ter run on, seagulls ter chase, and always sum barbecue leftovers are ona cards. Let’s go! Cheers — Billy

Calf club days return
p The Quaife brothers’ farm in Petley Road was the venue for a landmark event 100 years ago last April. The first-ever sheep dog trials in the region were held there. In 2021 a special commemorative event once again saw dogs and shepherds pit their skills against mobs of unruly sheep on the green hillsides of Otamatea.
Rural solidarity
p A tax on new utes was too much to bear for farmers and tradespeople alike. The announcement of this, along with a raft of other new regulations on the rural sector, saw a new movement take to the streets. Groundswell NZ began in the deep south, but its ranks were swelled with disgruntled Dargaville farmers when a peaceful protest raised serious concerns last July. Tractors rolled through Victoria Street, and crowds listened to a manifesto at Pioneer Rugby Park.
STEVE WOOD CONTRACTING
p Leah Macdonald and her goat Cherry were just two of the contestants who enjoyed the return of calf club days to schools across the district. The popular events serve to mould young farmers and teach animal welfare skills. Competition for ribbons was fierce as the heats gave way to a well-attended final, held in Arapohue last November.

LTP/SNA acronyms explained Motocross magic in the air

ULTRA
FINE LIME The Ultra Fine Lime Co. is now the authorised distributor of PFP fertilisers wide range of high quality Ultra fine ground lime & fertiliser products. Using the high quality fine particle products at our recommended rates will boost production while reducing transport and application costs by a considerable amount.
p Last year was the year of the Long Term Plan (LTP) for Mayor Jason Smith and the Kaipara District Council, making a framework for future growth. However, 2021 was also the year of the Significant Natural Area (SNA), a concept met with controversy. SNA mapping appeared to be about to circumscribe what one could or couldn’t do on farmland and private land across the north before protests forced the mapping process to cease. SNA mapping was intended by the central government to protect natural treasures, but opponents said it went too far and abused property rights. p It was a year of expansions and milestones for Dargaville’s Heritage Machinery Club, as they opened two new collections to public display and celebrated two decades in operation. The Alan Bycroft Collection of intricately hand-built model ships and the Suckling-Searle Maritime Collection now take pride of place at the club’s extensive hilltop premises, where they can be enjoyed by the public.

Arapohue pulls the crowds
p Paparoa celebrated the best of town and country with a successful show day in 2021, marking 145 years of A&P show tradition. Farming competitions spanned the show ring and the craft pavilions, with prize livestock on display.
Mental health heroes
p Last October’s Mental Health Week came with the message that we’re stronger together and that being a lifesaver can simply mean being there for your mates when they need a hand. Ruawai College illustrated this by tackling big tasks in teams, showing the power of solidarity.
p The Northern Wairoa A&P Show delivered fun for families, including carnival rides, sheep shearing and a monster tug of war contest. Hot summer weather made shade, cool drinks and ice cream the order of the day.
