p Raphael Kanopf rode into Dargaville early in January as part of his epic 7,000-kilometre mission to cover all of New Zealand by bicycle, raising awareness of mental health via his Ride for Life initiative. He’s taking on the ride with no support car, no backup rider and on zero dollars a day, relying on the support of generous locals to keep him going. With many many kilometres behind him, he was pleased to be welcomed in Dargaville by local caterer Mel Jean-Pierre Huang. Raphael went on his way with a hearty packed lunch, to fuel his push to Spirits Bay at the very top of the North Island.

Mr Dall says with such a large regional rainfall deficit, recovery could take a number of years even once summer was over and the rain came again. “A number of Northland rivers are now below designated ‘minimum flow’ levels designed to limit the amount of water that can be taken during dry periods to protect river ecology. “At this point, we’ve got about half a dozen consent holders who have ceased their takes in accordance with their resource consent conditions (mainly in the mid and Far North areas) and council has also had to impose restrictions on some other users.” Mr Dall says district councils taking water for public supply and farmers irrigating pasture are among the biggest users. “With summer now

in full swing and no significant rain forecast, members of the council’s hydrology team are currently gauging some of the more critical rivers in the region to ensure they have the most up-to-date data and figures to work with. “Preliminary information suggests a number of rivers are already below ‘minimum flow’ levels, and although this isn’t unusual during a dry summer, this wouldn’t usually happen until February or March and is linked to last year’s drier conditions.” The council was also receiving a high volume of calls from members of the public reporting potentially unauthorised or excessive water use, each of which was being investigated to ensure compliance with regional rules. ¢

Creative media careers launched

Familiar themes during 44 years

A small notebook delivered to the Kaipara Lifestyler this week details a community survey run by the Dargaville Jaycees in 1975, and highlights that the same concerns and aspirations prevailed then as now. The detailed questionnaire delved into matters of governance, roading, tourism and civic planning.

2020 sees the beginning of a new relationship between Te Roroa Learning Assistance, Development Charitable Trust and Te Taitokerau Trades Academy. Janet Te Rore, manager of the trust’s operations, first approached the Ministry of Education in 2018 to discuss how the trust could provide digital media programmes to people within the Kaipara, as she had identified the increasing need in the workforce for high-quality, innovative designers. Denise Jelicich, manager of the Trades Academy, says this is an important step towards providing vocational training in the Kaipara District. “This academy gives students in Years 12–13 the opportunity to begin their journey towards a meaningful career while they are still attending school. We are very excited to be partnering with this trust to assist them in their journey.” The importance of helping prospective future professionals start early in their chosen fields has brought a new focus on vocational specialisation within school curriculums. One local example is the Dargaville High School building academy, where young tradespeople can hone their skills, building real houses under the tutelage of industryexperienced staff.

Last year, Ben Morrison was Rookie of the Year in the highly competitive sport of TQ speedway racing. The 16-year-old driver from Maungaturoto went into the new season with big goals, and he’s now scored the title of third best in New Zealand, against adults with much more experience under their belts.

With the threat of fire in the public perception due to Australia’s ongoing natural disaster, local firefighters are urging caution and mindfulness when it comes to fires here in New Zealand.

“It’s a pretty surreal feeling,” admits the up-and-coming racing champion. “It’s only our second full season in, and others have been doing this for a decade or more. After scoring the 3NZ trophy, we went out to the next race meeting and came in second overall.” Commanding massive horsepower in a controlled slide on a dirt track, against adult veterans, might seem daunting to others, but Ben says that “he’s never known any other life”. He says that his childhood was spent around the racetrack and that his earliest memories involve good times with his family in the sport. Ben has received support from his family and from locals who have rallied

around his cause, seeing his potential. One supporter is local real estate professional Gary Morris, who receives grateful thanks from the young racer for organizing a fund raiser in 2019 and continuing to support his cause.. As the 2020 season ends at the national champs in Greymouth, we asked Ben about the possibility of lifting the number one trophy in a year’s time. “It’s always nice to go one better,” he says. “However, the top priority is to live up to the expectations of being third-ranked in New Zealand.” An off-season of practice on a speciality-built simulator will help keep Ben sharp; he’s also the nation’s top racer in virtual reality. ¢

A check with Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s informational website confirms that the region is now in an official ‘prohibited’ season. There is a total fire ban on lighting any open-air fire. Residents may apply for a permit, but the criteria for it being granted are very strict when the danger is high. For example, a fire permit will only be granted if Fire and Emergency consider that the fire is necessary to prevent, reduce or overcome any hazard to life, or because of another serious emergency. A temporary permit may be granted if the weather changes dramatically enough to reduce the risk. Weather or other conditions have temporarily reduced the fire risk, so it is apparently safe to light a fire.

When Dargaville resident Sharneece Joyce was confronted with images of the devastation left in the wake of Australia’s bushfires, she, like many of us, wondered what to do to help. The answer has become a plan of action involving many supporters and organisations around town. “I had been watching the live coverage of the fires, and the loss was quite emotional. “What a day — the 20th anniversary of the Tinopai Fishing Contest for the year 2020 was a redletter day for everyone,” said local school principal, Sonia Kaihe, at the close of a huge day for the harbourside community last Saturday. “The best day this principal has had since arriving here in 2013. The awhi, the generosity, the kindness of the whole Tinopai community and Kaipara District has been phenomenal this year, with guest appearances from WillowJean Prime MP and Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith giving out our top fishing prizes. “Amazing sunshine, excellent atmosphere, incredible generosity, great music, tonnes of fish, big crowd out the front and the back of the stage. Sponsorship generosity this year has blown us away. We ended up giving 106 spot prizes away, 40 kids’ spot prizes; 10 fishing rods with boogie boards for top sprats in the children’s contest with a Playstation 4 as the top prize. Also on the day’s list were fish auctions, barbecues, mussel fritters and the best hangi in the Kaipara,” said Sonia. As a school fundraiser, the contest coffers were bulging after the event, with a full total still being assessed at time of print. ¢

The dramatic orange and yellow skies caused by the Australian bushfire disaster have galvanised locals who have banded together across the Kaipara to arrange an airlift of supplies, targeting Australia’s native animals and birds.

The call has gone out across New Zealand for vet supplies and animal care essentials to help a small army of volunteers to care for the often severely injured, animals fleeing Australia’s largest-ever wildfires. DSV Logistics and Freight Specialists are arranging shipment and small community businesses have formed collection hubs for the first round of supplies, sent across the Tasman last Friday. In Maungaturoto, Real Town Pies took time off preparing pastries to collect bandages, carry cages, ointments and vet equipment. Dargaville’s Farmlands store headed up the initiative on the west coast. The many branches of The

Larissa Mueller has seen a side of New Zealand that many haven’t during her seven-year mission to trek around the entire coastline of our country. She says she’s seen a unique perspective on the land from horseback, but also the warmth and generosity of the people.

p Larissa Mueller has seen a whole new side of New Zealand as she attempts to circumnavigate both islands on horseback

Larissa, 31, has been travelling with her horse Sprite for all this time to promote and support the Leg Up Trust. A charitable organisation who partner at-risk and underprivileged kids with horses, teaching them valuable life lessons and helping to heal the psychological scars of abuse. Her journey began in the Hawke’s Bay and has circled the South Island already. She passed through Dargaville around Christmas time and will be back in

Mangawhai on the opposite coast early 2020. Larissa says that generous locals have been most welcoming of both herself and Sprite as they continue their trek. Solar energy is a big topic of discussion when it comes to home improvements. With cutting edge tech being offered on terms, the essential question is whether or not it makes fiscal sense to invest in photovoltaic panels to reduce your power bill, considering the projected lifetime of such systems. With Photovoltaic (PV) panels now lasting three decades or more, and prices dropping, the return on your investment will come around sooner than it used to. Of course, a full system consists of more than just panels, it’s also about storage and control. However, looking at the whole package, it’s still possible that an average home will recoup the initial investment in infrastructure within the first five to seven years through savings alone, leaving in excess of two decades of pure returns. However, the cuts to your power bill are not the only advantage. Looking at another market without subsidies: the clear picture is that having a solar system installed also increases the value of your home at sale. A detailed survey by the United States’ National Renewable Energy Laboratory revealed that, despite varying conditions across the continental US,

every $1 of power bill savings added $20 to the saleable price of a home. These figures are in US dollars, but the scale remains similar here. Direct from their findings: “The exact numbers vary from property to property and installation to installation, but recent research shows an average increase in resale value being $5,911 (nearly NZ$9,000) for each one kilowatt (kW) of solar installed. In a state like California, for example, a small 3.1-kilowatt (kW) system can add an average of $18,324 (NZ$27,675) to the value of a medium-sized home. It’s important to note that these statistics only apply to today’s housing prices and utility rates. As electricity prices go up (as they most certainly will), the advantages of solar energy rise proportionally as well.” Many American markets are more fully saturated with solar tech than

It’s an odd truth that you know exactly how much the bottle of orange juice of the chicken salad sandwich you bought for lunch yesterday was worth, but that you may be out by tens of thousands if asked to guess the value of your own home. If you own a home, it’s likely to be your biggest asset, and when the time comes to sell, a realistic figure to attach as a sale price is of prime importance. Too low, and you’re swindling yourself out of revenue. Too high, and you’re potentially looking at a long wait to sell. How can one be sure that internet-based values, or those coupled to your rates, are up to date? The current wisdom is to consult several sources, before talking to a real estate professional about a firm price. The four core sources of a home valuation are online services, the Rateable Value or RV, a close look at the prices recently paid for similar properties, and, most comprehensively, a valuation by a qualified valuer. The first of these is easy, but can prove a little inaccurate; take a look at sites like qv.co.nz, homes.co.nz or Trade Me’s property insights. Values can vary between these sites, and they all use different criteria to arrive at a round figure. By comparison, the RV (formerly called the GV) of a home is

based solely on what the local council can charge in rates. The Rateable Value is recalculated every three years, and the market can move more swiftly than that. Neither of these methods takes into account improvements you may have undertaken, or can see inside your home. The prices paid for homes around yours may provide a good indication of where the market is at and where it’s going, but once again, this only works to the extent that homes are homogenised. If you have the best house on the street, a more modern design in an old-established neighbourhood, or conversely a heritage villa amid 1980s prefab homes, your valuation will buck the curve. Interior decorating and other upgrades are also a big factor. Perhaps the best way to go, to nail down a suitable price, is to talk to the experts.

A professional valuer will cost, but their opinion is based on experience and takes everything into account, often down to the last light fitting or freshly painted deck. If you’re serious about selling, your real estate agent will walk you through the best way to arrive at a price, and will then work hard to ensure that you are remunerated for what your property is really worth. ¢

Real estate agent Glen Pollington experienced a dramatic change of scenery when he and his wife Joan returned permanently to Dargaville after 20 years living in Alice Springs, deep in the red centre of Australia. Glen worked in the Kaipara area for a short period in real estate before working for Ray White Dargaville, the sales professional says that moving to the Kaipara was about much more than dusting off his surfcasting skills. “One of the main reasons we chose to come here, now, was to reunite my wife with her homeland,” says Glen. “We returned to the place where she grew up, and where she still has many close relatives, so she could enjoy her life and enjoy the outdoors. Retirement is not a word either of us are thinking about for a long long time!” Professionally, Glen has chosen an interesting time to engage with the world of local real estate. He comes from a strong background in sales, and worked in the automotive trade, selling new Toyotas with great success during his Australian tenure. There’s also a family connection; Glen’s father was a distinguished Ray White salesperson across the Tasman in the 1980s and 1990s. Following in his footsteps seemed like a legacy decision when local Ray White boss Jean Johnson

approached Glen, with an opportunity to work in their busy Dargaville office. “I think my strength lies in giving good advice on the best way to sell,” he says. “My aim is to help people to get the best price for their property and to reduce the selling time. RUAWAI COLLEGE Ruawai College is pleased to confirm that the Dargaville to Ruawai College return bus will be continuing throughout 2020. The bus will travel direct to Ruawai from Dargaville but this year we have included a stop at the old Mititai shop on the corner of Mititai Road and State Highway 12 if needed. This service is heavily subsidised by the Ruawai College Board of Trustees for Ruawai College students who purchase a term pass. This service is optional so all fares including term passes must be paid in full and in advance. No fare can be put on account unless it is done in advance, so the full fare is paid prior to the service being required. No student can board the bus unless a ticket or pass has been purchased. Casual fares and Concession tickets are available for all students including Ruawai Primary students at a set fee. Again, these tickets must be purchased prior to boarding the bus. TICKET COSTS TERM PASS 1 Ruawai College student per term – $150 per student 2 Ruawai College students from same family per term – $280 for both 3 or more Ruawai College students from same family per term – $400 for all students CASUAL FARE $5 per student per trip The bus leaves Dargaville at 8am from Victoria Street, Dargaville adjacent to The Warehouse car park and returns the children to the same place at approximately 3.30pm. Any Arapohue students will be collected from Mititi shop area at approximately 8.10am and dropped off at the Mititi shop area at approximately 3.20pm.
