p Around 100 adults and children attended a science event at the Dargaville Town Hall in December, which was presented by Dr Michelle Dickinson, aka Nanogirl. Initially, a science blog writer, Dr Michelle now travels New Zealand demonstrating theatrical science shows to schools and communities and offers hands-on learning opportunities to support teachers in low decile areas. Students from St Joseph’s Catholic School assisted with sections of the 45-minute interactive show — Kristel-Lee Brown assisted in the liquid nitrogen demonstration. Afterwards, a chicken and chips dinner was provided by Dargaville Four Square for all attendees, as Dr Michelle mingled and inspired the budding scientists.

p Members of the Baylys Beach Community Trust, Baylys Beach Society, Hayden Andrews Builders, Baylys Surf Lifesaving Club and community members gathered in December to thank major supporters involved in gaining the approval for the development of the new community centre project. Mayor Dr Jason Smith praised the efforts of those involved and a barbecue meal supplied by Silver Fern Farms followed. p Members of the crew at Dargaville St John were surprised and very grateful for a recent donation of hand knitted teddy bears, according to the spokesperson, Genea Evans. In December local resident Janice Johnston presented staff member Sarah Shields with a large bag of her knitted teddies to be given to children needing comfort. Genea said sometimes children feel intimidated and worried in the back of the ambulance, and giving them a teddy bear instantly calms and relaxes them. Janice also sends her teddies to Starship Hospital and Fire and Emergency.

Tinopai celebrates successful contest u by Paul Campbell

“Another fantastic day on the harbour with the fish just rolling in and a hugely successful auction.”

p A snapper catch is weighed in at the contest

Tinopai Primary School principal, Sonia Kaihe was “cleaning up” last Monday after the 19th annual Tinopai Fishing Contest, which raises funds for the small harbourside school. Contestants had the inner and outer Kaipara waters to seek their catches, and category winners and the total funds raised were still being compiled as the Kaipara Lifestyler went to press. “The lead-up to the day had been intense, culminating in the packing of the hangi the night before all tucked away in the chiller ready to go in the morning. Stage was set, prizes arranged, activities and jobs sorted, weather was checked, and the stalls were ready. As usual, the crowds didn’t start coming until around 1pm when the children’s sprat competitors lined up to weigh what they had caught. “Ticket sales were slightly down on last

year, with a number of other events happening around the district,” Sonia added. “But things were more than made up with items donated for auction, including a 2018 All Blacks jersey that attracted some competitive bidding and raised $1,200 on its own. “Our auctioneer was stock agent Shane Wintle, who did a great job. Another item that went to a keen bidder was a pillow apparently used by Sonny Bill Williams to sleep on during a flight. We’ve kept the winning bid quiet in case he might be discouraged in future — and speaking of the future, next year, of course, is our 20th contest — so we are already planning to make it a milestone event. Look out for a jazz band, celebrity guests — particularly those who have been instrumental in making this an iconic harbour event over two decades.” ¢

Detox unit reopened u by Jill Dickie

The Dargaville Hospital has gained three extra beds in their mental health and addiction service unit after recently completed renovations. The additional beds will reduce wait times for patients who will be well-supported with the addition of seven new staff members. CEO Northland DHB, Dr Nick Chamberlain, said that with 139 admissions in the last year the facility had a definite need in the community. “This is a gold standard programme, and we are very proud of it.” General manager for mental health and addiction services, Ian McKenzie, agreed and said it was beneficial to keep such a service local to prevent separating family members. “We are well positioned here now to support the community through specialist resources.” The unit now provides an education room for teaching life skills such as cooking, budgeting and creating a resume, and a video conferencing room to help people connect with their p Nurse manager, Rachel Beech, said the unit offers a unique model giving people nurturing and loving future support team to ensure support to move them to a new future relapse prevention. Celebrating coasters

It’s a rap

u by Jill Dickie

Rising rap stars, Church and AP, are performing in Dargaville as part of their recently announced nationwide tour. The group has rapidly increased in popularity in the last year, topping the charts with airtime on radio, and are excited to be on the road during January.

Dargaville tegestologist, Barry Jones, began collecting coasters in the 1960s and the hobby resulted in accumulating more than 1,000 items and a tremendous sense of pride — now they are for sale.

p Rap stars, Church and AP, have included Dargaville in their nationwide tour p Barry Jones is selling his display boards of coasters to individuals and hotels

The cardboard coasters, or beer mats as they are often referred, are designed to sit between a cold glass or hot cup and a table to absorb moisture and protect the surface and are still in use today. They provide a popular marketing medium for hotels, motels, bars and restaurants. The branded items in Barry’s collection have originated in many countries around the world, several arriving from friends and clients on overseas holidays. Now Barry has mounted the coasters, 50 at a time,

onto a framed display board protected with acrylic, and offering them to individuals for bar areas and hotel or sports club bars. “Displays like this create interesting conversations as people recognise various names and drinks to recall memories and anecdotal incidents,” said Barry. The display boards are available for $80 each, which includes a donation of $10 to Dargaville Menz Shed where they have been assembled. Barry can be contacted at 027 476 7361. ¢

The two performers, Elijah Manu (Church) and Albert Purcell (AP), 18 and 19 years old, came together as a duo through taking part in community hall music programmes in Auckland where their distinctive sound and songs have impressed fans and received recognition from industry heavyweights. They began with writing songs together and were not intending to create such a large project. “We were just making songs together, and we saw other people were releasing joint projects and we just figured, we can do that. Fairy tern chicks hatched Regional fire risk high Staff from the Department of Conservation are thrilled that the December-born fairy tern chick is due to fledge any day now, and two more chicks have been hatched to boost the dwindling numbers of the endangered birds further.

p A fairy tern chick hatched at Pakiri Beach in December is due to fledge any day Photo credit Laura Patience, DOC Ranger

The two new chicks were born on January 1, one in Waipu and the other in Mangawhai, and are being closely guarded. “It is lovely news,” said DOC communications adviser, Abigail Monteith. The current breeding season has had weather disruptions with repeated high winds, and it is expected that would have an impact on nesting. “Last year we had five chicks fledge, but we are likely to have fewer this year,” said DOC technical adviser, Tony Beauchamp. The fairy terns nest on shell and sandbanks just above high tide, making

them vulnerable to rats, stoats and other predators, disturbance by people, 4WD vehicles and dogs. They are also at risk from stormy weather and very high tides. To help protect the birds and their chicks DOC advise to use designated walkways and avoid nests, keep dogs on leads and remove bait, fish and rubbish to deter predators. If you are being chased, squawked at, or if a bird is on the ground pretending to be injured, you are too close to a nest. More information is available at the Mangawhai Museum where a fairy tern exhibition is on display. ¢

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. *Results may vary

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is urging Kaipara and wider Northland residents to think twice about lighting rubbish fires as temperatures soar and grass and vegetation dry out, with fire crews attending several scrub and rubbish fires already this month. Fire crews from Ruawai and Paparoa attended a bonfire at Matakohe on December 31 and a rubbish fire in Pahi on January 1. An unpermitted fire was extinguished on Redhill Rd Aratapu on January 4, and another rubbish fire was put out on SH14. Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer, Clinton Lyall, says it’s important people check their local fire status to see if they need a permit to light an outdoor fire. “Northland is getting dry, and things can quickly get out of control. Even though the grass seems to be fairly green — it’s deceptive with hot temperatures and the low humidity in the later parts of the day driven by wind.” In the Far North, a scrub fire in Taipa last week burned through one

hectare of land, and a huge fire in Matawai, south of Kaikohe burned through 60 hectares of bush and took four days to extinguish. Deputy Principal Fire Officer Wayne Martin said: “With the conditions at the moment, particularly since Christmas, we haven’t had any rain and we’ve had high temperatures and afternoon winds. Northland is drying out. “People need to start being more vigilant around getting permits, and question whether they really need to be burning rubbish at this time of year.” Residents wanting to light an outdoor fire must get a permit, which is free and can be obtained online at checkitsalright.nz or by phoning 0800 658 628.

KAIPARA SPOTLIGHT A Message from the Ministry of Health Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that is standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals which may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

We encourage anyone who is interested in the future of Kaipara to join the People’s Panel. How People’s Panel works • People who sign up will receive surveys by email • We have approximately one survey every couple of months, but you only need to complete those that interest you

• Line Marking – Mangawhai Township

• Most surveys take five or ten minutes to complete

NOTE TO DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS: Between October and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement, this introduces fresh aggregate into the failure in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness.

• We keep personal details private and members are not identified in reports of survey results

We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers, and to prevent damage to the repairs. We understand that there is a degree of inconvenience caused by these works, however this inconvenience is significantly extended if we are required to return to any sites that require repairing.

Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information.

• Key findings and how the results have been used are shared with you • We will keep you informed about other opportunities to give feedback to Kaipara District Council. To register go to www.kaipara.govt.nz/panel

Matakohe detour in effect

u by Jill Dickie

A new detour has taken effect this week at the State Highway 12 bridge replacement project at Matakohe, just south of Anderson Bridge, from Wednesday January 16.

The Northland Regional Council is urging fish and shell dumpers to show a bit more courtesy towards others before discarding such items and to take advantage of groups especially set up to ensure they don’t go to waste.

People using Northland’s coastal areas as a dumping ground is not allowed under regional council rules though is still a reasonably common problem according to NRC coastal and water quality field operations manager, Ricky Eyre. He says summer’s onset coincides with a spike in the numbers of people making life unnecessarily unpleasant and potentially risky for others by dumping fish frames and the remains of kina and shellfish on beaches and coastal margins. “The regional council generally adopts a fairly pragmatic approach to

All traffic is being diverted off SH12 on to Matakohe East Road. Vehicles will follow the detour through Matakohe, past Matakohe School and back on to SH12. “The detour is approximately five kilometres long, and NZTA asks motorists to allow extra time, take care and keep to the temporary speed limits to keep everybody safe through the detours,” says the agency’s project delivery manager, Chris Hunt. “The detour will allow the construction crew to form the new intersection into Matakohe and tie in the western end of the new alignment

the issue, appreciating that in some conditions such as in deep, well-flushed waters the practice realistically poses little risk to other beach users or the environment,” said Eyre. “However, when dumped in the intertidal area or on land nearby, including beaches, the waste can pose a potential risk to other beach users, water quality and attracts scavengers.” It is suggested that cleaning freshly caught fish is done well away from publicly utilised areas, and unwanted items are taken home and buried. into the existing state highway.” Together with an already existing diversion north of the Anderson Bridge, both detours will remain until the end of February when traffic will run along a section of the new SH12 alignment. “The Matakohe Bridges project involves the construction of two new two-lane bridges across tidal estuaries along a new 2.5km alignment of SH12 through Matakohe. “The new road alignment and intersections will remove tight curves and short straights and improve safety.” The $26m project is expected to be completed in late 2019. ¢

The acting general manager of the museum, Dr Tracey Wedge, received notification at the conference that the gardens have been recognised with an award of Nationally Significant Planting of Historic Roses. “We are honoured that the work of the team has been recognised by the award,” said Tracey. The rose gardens at The Kauri Museum were established in 2012 and have been a joint project between The Kauri Museum staff and volunteers, Heritage Roses Northland, Tasman Bay Roses, the Coates Memorial Church and the Matakohe Cemetery Committee. The gardens represent a living extension of The Kauri Museum, preserving early rose heritage and include the first roses that were grown in New Zealand. “The extensive planting around the museum and Totara House demonstrates what working in collaboration can achieve,” said Tracey. “The president of Heritage Roses NZ has been an important part of our gardens here, also Derek and Andrea Hope for their commitment to working in the garden. They are the backbone of the group who tend the roses.”

Renovation Protection for healthy water u by Andy Bryenton

The heat of summer combined with the season’s normal diminished rainfall is taking its toll on household and rural water supplies, with tank levels dropping through regular use. With less input — barring those occasions where delivery by water carrier has been necessary — those who are familiar with living on a finite supply of water are adjusting their habits to make the most of the precious liquid resource. Reports from medical professionals have highlighted a secondary issue above and beyond limited supply. Cases of water-borne illnesses have been in the public eye recently, calling for a reassessment of the systems, which protect those on tank water from diseases. Alarmingly, many of those who rely on tank-based storage do not have any filtration or purification measures at all between the storage tank and the tap. These precautions are a wise move no matter where the water itself is sourced — from a bore, a well, a dam, natural spring or creek or from rainwater collected via the roof and guttering. In all cases, it’s possible for contaminants to enter the storage tank — everything from leaf litter and pine needles through to animal remains. Needless to say, these contaminants bring with them the threat of further complications, such as E coli and Campylobacter, among others.

A truly effective system for screening out nasties comprises of filtration on two levels, bolstered with ultra-violet based purification and starting with protection from the source itself, if that source is the roof and gutters. The fitment of meshes and grates to stop birds, animals and leaves collecting in gutters and pipes stops large contaminating agents at their source. Nevertheless, even those utilising bores, wells and dams benefit from particulate filtration — a coarser filter to sift out broken down organic materials, and a finer grade to trap the larger bacteria. An ultraviolet filter is the second line of defence, which kills microorganisms with UV light — however, these units cannot stand alone, as large particles passing through unfiltered can carry bacteria like a ‘trojan horse’, allowing them to avoid the light. With a comprehensive filtration system in place — and well maintained, with annual filter replacements and

Renovation Keeping your home cool u by Andy Bryenton

In a literal polar opposite of our main concern in winter, right now Kiwis are striving to shed heat and create an oasis of cool within their homes. As the mercury climbs and summer gets sizzling, many people will turn their minds to technology for a solution. How can you get the most out of your heat pump air conditioner? Here are some common myths, exploded. Myth — Heat pumps are costly to run. The truth — like driving a car, how you utilise your heat pump dictates the cost. All of the modern air conditioning solutions on the market today are more energy efficient than those which have gone before, but the best trick to efficiency — above and beyond good placement during installation — is to go ‘light on the gas pedal’. It’s tempting to come home and turn the level right down as low as it can go, blasting cold air. Leaving the machine on this setting all night is a sure fire way to devour electricity. Use the inbuilt thermostat, and if you want a cool home when you get back from work, utilise a timer function or invest in home automation to control your air from a smartphone or tablet remotely. Myth — bigger is better. The truth — the key to efficiency with heat pumps is not size; it’s placement. Many folks decide where they want to place their air con due to style considerations. The best way to ensure inexpensive and effective coverage is to have the machine placed by a professional. They’ll take into consideration the layout of your home, prevailing air currents, and importantly, how the interior unit interacts with the outdoor unit. A long run of piping is never a good idea here, and while it is possible to place a heat pump on any wall,

sometimes the costs outweigh the benefits. Remember that there are inceiling ‘cassette’ and floor standing console units to choose from as well. Myth — one heat pump can cover my whole house. The truth — unless it’s a small or very open plan home, this is usually not the case.

Even a large unit may be taxed to control the temperature through a whole home. Similarly, heat pumps do not fare well with heat transfer systems designed for fireplaces. A multi-split system may be the answer — one large external device running two internal diffusers.

Or combine living-area air conditioning with simpler solutions such as fans for the bedroom area. No matter what you choose, always have your air conditioning system assessed and installed by qualified professionals, and select a quality brand. ¢

RESTHOME & VILLAGE

The Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust is undertaking to build a Dementia Care Unit attached to the current Riverview Rest Home in Maungaturoto. This will better enable the rest home to cater to the increasing needs of our community. Costs associated with this project are immense to say the least. To date the MCCT has spent close to $650,000 gaining the necessary consents, organising bank finance and getting the foundations completed. The Trust has raised a further $250,000 of the $900,000 to complete the project.

I am pleased to support the MCCT with their current project and I will donate $250 to the Trust with every new listing I sign up. Terms and Conditions apply.

Welcome to Mangawhai Walking weekend celebrates 20 years

Cleary and Shadick opens

u by Jill Dickie

Walking and hiking enthusiasts are invited to book a place for their boots for the 20th Mangawhai Walking Weekend to be held from March 28 to March 31. Organisers of the event have planned more than 30 events for the weekend and walks are graded from easy to challenging.

p Mangawhai’s Leslie Cleary joins with Dargaville artist Donna Shadick in opening an exhibition at Mangawhai Artists Gallery on January 10. Donna’s presentation called The Horse and Mankind conveys the beauty and grace of the horse as both a servant and companion to man through the ages. Leslie’s Dawn to Dusk presentation captures the beauty of walks along the beach with a series of paintings in oil on canvas.

MANGAWHAI MARKETS p Mangawhai Walking Weekend is celebrating 20 years of the popular event in March

The variety of trails enables walkers to explore the region from the banks of the Kaipara to Waipu, and south as far as Goat Island and to meet and interact with fellow participants who travel for the event. The weekend includes time to explore the bush-covered Brynderwyn ranges, an afternoon ramble around the picturesque estuary loop track along the cliff top and returning to the shore, being entertained by professional performers waiting in hidden locations along the trail. Weather permitting, a trip to the popular Waipu Caves will be included.

On Saturday the programme is planned to finish in time for attendees to prepare for song and dance at the Mangawhai Food and Wine Festival. Other easy walks around Mangawhai will continue on Sunday before settling into a 20thanniversary celebration lunch. Many of the easier walks are designed to offer a memorable experience enjoying gardens, artworks, historical insights and afternoon teas, with around 150 informative and entertaining guides on hand to introduce what Mangawhai has to offer. Online bookings are open now at mangawhaiwalking.co.nz. ¢
