A rescue at sea

“When we got there, they were half-an-hour away from hitting the bar.” The Kaipara Heads were close to claiming yet another maritime victim when the Helensville charter boat, the 12-metre Francie, with skipper Rod Bridge at the helm, came to her rescue in boisterous seas. The 12-metre ketch, Cheval de Mer, had been adrift with blown out sails and a broken-down engine for four days in stormy seas after activating an emergency beacon 30 nautical miles north-west of Pouto and 20nm off the coast two weeks ago. When the Francie took the ketch under tow, disaster was minutes away. “Another half-an-hour and that would have been it — they would have foundered in heavy seas on the bar,” said Rod. The drama included the Northland rescue helicopter flying out earlier to assist the Cheval de Mer, which had a crew of three men aboard. They had rigged a small jib and mizzen sail to keep off the coast and chopper pilot Pete Turnbull said the yacht photo courtesy of Noel Hilliam was ‘rocking and rolling’ as replacement communications Cheval de Mer under tow from Francie inside the Kaipara Harbour equipment was winched down to it. Tourism in the Kaipara this summer has been a mixed bag, with many reporting an increase in the domestic market and differing trends in international visitors

Unseasonal weather conditions this summer, along with the global economy have also had a marked impact on local entertainment and accommodation providers. Mangawhai business owners report several trends. Mill Ridge Cottage owner, Alison Cox, said December and January varied little from previous years. The beach settlement attracts many of its domestic visitors from Auckland, and to a lesser degree Wellington, and international travellers are predominantly from the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. “The weather hasn’t been the greatest but it hasn’t put anyone off,” said Alison. “The Aucklanders in particular, seem to want to just relax. I get the feeling the most are worn out or stressed and some are visiting family and friends.” Mangawhai Smash Pipi cafe owner, Shel Lloyd said the two weeks over the Christmas and New Year period had been ‘steady-busy’, as opposed to ‘bus-busy’, adding that the tourism market has changed. “It’s been a bit different this year,” said Lloyd. “We’re really dictated to by the weather here and although it’s been busy, it hasn’t been crazy busy. “We have a predominantly Auckland market and fewer international tourists — overall, we see more New Zealander travellers coming through.” On the west coast of the Kaipara, in Dargaville, views are mixed and overall the weather and global economy are still focal points. Lynne Morfett, owner and operator of Dormavilla, said she has talked with many of the visitors coming through her shop and people are certainly travelling around. “Some people are spending and some aren’t but it’s probably on a par with last year,” said

Lynne. “We still see a lot of Canadians, Germans, French, Aussies and English and the odd one from elsewhere and many are visiting family in NZ, then travelling further North for a tiki tour. “This summer, there have been a lot of people travelling from the South Island too, particularly Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. The Christmas period was slow starting but it all balanced in the end and everyone said they loved NZ and didn’t want to go home.” Parkview Motel proprietor, James Brackenbury, said he had spoken to other accommodation providers and all agreed that tourism was down. The biggest deterrent seemed to be the Christchurch earthquake, as internationally, people tend to think that the whole country is shaking. “We’re not that busy but there has been little change to the number of international visitors, although there are more Russians and Indians. Everything has gone up in price and local people seem to be staying at home too.” In Matakohe, Kauri Museum curator, Bet Nelly, said they have had a fantastic summer largely due to the wet weather. The spend in the museum shop and cafe has been up and both have been busy every day. “It has been the best summer that we’ve had for years and we’ve been well looked after by the international visitors,” said Bet. “We have had a lot of individual people, coming of their own accord and also families from Auckland — particularly from the Asian communities. “New Zealanders make up 26% of total visitors and the rest are from overseas. Australians are the next largest market at 22%, the United Kingdom and Ireland are at 14%. There are a lot of Germans too and the rest is a mixed bag.”

Girl Guides break world record

Well putt!

by Joanne Speechly

by Joanne Speechly Dargaville is in the news again and this time it is for all the right reasons, thanks to our new golfing legend, Val Sills. The retired dairy farmer and lifetime member of the Northern Wairoa Golf Club potted two hole-in-ones, within one hour at the weekend but still says ‘It wasn’t a very good round altogether’. Val, who has been a member at the club since the age of 15, previously scored a hole-in-one about 10 years ago on the club’s same ninth hole. On Saturday he was successful on the 165 metre, par 3, fifth hole and again on the 113 metre, par 3, ninth hole. News of the remarkable achievement has the golfing community buzzing and a quick internet search confirms that the ‘fairy tale fluke’ has gone viral, with no less than 10 posts in Val’s honour. The 74 year old has hit the headlines in the NZ Herald, news site www.stuff.co.nz, www. hawkesbay.co.nz and NZ Golf – to name a few. Holes-in-one are an extremely rare occurrence and the result of both skill and wit. Northern Wairoa Golf Club vice president, Robert Nathan, described the feat as amazing and Northland Golf media liaison officer, Michael Macdonald agreed. Among the memorable names in golf holes-in-one, is Gene Sarazenone who obtained the top score in 1973 at the British Open at age 71 and Felicity Sieghart, 76 years old at the time, is believed to hold the record for the oldest person to make two holes-in-one during one round. . . . continued from front page

A rescue at sea “One bloke clenched his hands above his head and yelled: “I am alive!” And in reality it was all in a day’s work for Rod and Shamrock Charters. “The following Saturday we towed another boat home from the Kaipara Heads, and we had to cancel a fishing charter to do so. We’ve been booked every day, but the party we had to cancel were very good about it, when we said ‘sorry we are off on a mission’. “When the need is there you go, you don’t hang around. It is more important to see someone alive on the wharf than bodies the next day.”

It took two years but with a whole lot of hard work, fantastic support and a little bit of national media coverage to boot, Dargaville Girl Guides have done it!

The local contingent of the girls’ brigade has collected enough bras to break a world record and raise awareness about breast cancer at the same time. “At the moment, here in Dargaville, we have 165,525 bras but there is still a thousand odd down in Auckland that we haven’t collected yet,” said Girl Guides leader Roby Martinovich. “On the day, we’re hoping to end up with 168,000 — that’s our goal, however we already have enough to break the record.” The Dargaville-based Girl Guides campaign has attracted national television coverage, featuring twice on TV One’s Breakfast programme, C4’s The Jono Project and after school series The Erin Simpson Show. Sorting through some of the 165,525 bras collected “We’ve had a huge response both locally and from the TV coverage and now the next step is joining the bras into a bra chain chain world record, currently held by Australia, on February 18 at Memorial Park. We’re asking for teams of between 8 as a means of doing this. or 10 people to register and come along on the day to help link the bras “We need at least 200 people on the day to into a bra chain — we really need to get a fair idea of how many people help link the chain,” added Robyn. “We’ll start are coming along.” at five in the morning, and we’ll have a sausage Dargaville Girl Guides has about seven active members and together sizzle and drinks available.” with Pippins and Brownies, about 18 girls are involved. In 2010, the Breast People are asked to phone or email Cancer Foundation asked Girl Guiding NZ to become involved in helping Robyn a soon as possible on 09 439 4105 or raise awareness about breast cancer and Dargaville decide to break to bra merv.robyn@xtra.co.nz.

Rotary scholarships awarded Dargaville Rotary has awarded two departing Dargaville High School students with a scholarship each, to assist them as they move forth to tertiary education. Since 2000 the Dargaville club has presented the grant to a deserving student who is selected from either DHS or Ruawai College. However, due to the extremely high calibre of applicants this year, Dargaville Rotary decided to offer a second place scholarship to another student, while increasing the first place scholarship grant to $1,500 and the one-off runner up award was for $500. The top two places were both awarded to Dargaville High School students — in first place Eden Gray and second place, Nicole Callis. Last year’s recipient, Danni Crosbie from Ruawai College was also in attendance and spoke enthusiastically about her first year at The University of Auckland. “Last year’s winner, Danni, spoke of the difficulties she faced, going from a small college like Ruawai into Auckland University, where everything’s on a totally different scale and how she overcame it with the help of her peers in the Hall of Residence.

“As far as her academic qualifications went, she received A grades or A+ in almost all of her eight papers. I was so pleased to hear how well she had done because it confirmed that we had picked a diligent and deserving student.” This year’s scholarship winner, Eden Gray, plans to study Zoology at Otago University and Nicole Callis is heading to either The University of Auckland or Massey University in Wellington to further her education.

JANUARY 18 - 2012

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Kaipara Waka medal hopes by Paul Campbell On many a weekend morning on the Arapoa River arm of the Northern Kaipara, the sing-song cadence of a male voice calling the stroke echoes over the water, reminiscent of traditional rowing teams on calm waterways around the country. But in this case, come rain or shine, the craft is of a different genre, and the rowers are paddlers, both men and women. The waka ama has come into it’s own on the Kaipara. The growing sport sees groups of paddlers, from solo to six in number, working together as a team. The ama or outrigger on the left-hand side balances the waka or canoe, helping it to speed through the water with each stroke of the paddles. This week, 50-plus teams of paddlers from around the country are gathering for a week-long national competition, and the six-strong men’s team based at Pahi, are in the medal running. “The Kaipara men’s team are looking good,” says local waka ama enthusiast, Errol Evans.

He trains regularly in the craft, as does his wife, Maureen, and they will be at Karapiro, on this occasion competing with Whangarei’s Parihaka team. The 2012 New Zealand Post National Waka Ama Sprint Championships got underway this Tuesday and will run through to Saturday. An expected 2,500 paddlers and 10,000 spectators are expected at Lake Karapiro, placing accommodation in Cambridge and the surrounding district at a premium. Teams from 55 clubs will be taking part and the furthest group is from Kaitaia, apart from some teams from the South Island. “The paddlers span all ages,” said Maureen. “Racing gets underway with Tuesday and Wednesday dedicated to juniors who range in age from 7 to 19. On Thursday racing is for individuals on single person waka ama canoes and on Friday and Saturday the races are for adults, and they range from the ages of 20 to 70 plus!“ “We are looking forward to a great week,”

added Errol. It is a huge event and it’s great for us from the Kaipara to make contact with others from around the country. The atmosphere is huge and you get a great adrenaline buzz when you are out on the lake competing.” The week’s race distances are sprints, with the shortest 250m and the longest 1500m. “There are straight races, and races where the crews have to do up to five hairpin turns, adding excitement for spectators, and there is also one event where two teams of six have their craft lashed together for a 12-strong tandem crew,” said Maureen. Lara Collins, of Waka Ama New Zealand, says the event will be promoting an important water safety message throughout the week and swimming instruction will be underway while the Waka Ama racing is taking place. “With alarming drowning statistics in New Zealand, this event offers the opportunity for waka ama paddlers to learn more about taking better care of themselves and their mates in the oceans, rivers and waterways of Aotearoa.”

Damp sprats — no problem What’s become a fixture on the Kaipara harbour calendar, the Pahi Kids Sprat Fishing Competition, was back bigger than ever this year despite the weather. New Year’s Day saw 31youngsters vying for a wide variety of locally sponsored prizes. “We had to close the event half way through due to adverse weather conditions — despite the protests of the kids — and parents and caregivers agreed with our safety measure.” To ease their disappointment, the contestants retired to a prize-giving in the nearby Pahi Hall for soft drinks, sausages and iceblocks..

‘One Foot in the Groove’ Kaipara class act, Whiskey Business, will once again woo the crowd at this year’s Classics at the Cove, with their unique repertoire of bluegrass, roots and soft rock music. The occasion will also mark the release of their debut album, One Foot in the Groove. Between them, the four member band possesses a wealth of talent and their new album is the culmination of many months’ hard work and innovation. “One Foot in the Groove is an entirely Kaipara production,” said Whiskey Business’ Maura Flower. “Caryl Smith and Peter Flower took the photos and we went to the Kauri Museum for some of the shots. “The sound was all recorded in houses in Matakohe, where we hung up duvet covers and all sorts of things to get the perfect sound. A lot of it was recorded at our house — in between tankers, we’d put up the duvets and silence the dog. “Actually, you wouldn’t believe it. Despite the makeshift surroundings, it’s so beautifully recorded and has a really lovely sound quality. It’s very professional and a wonderful result.” The distinctive sound that is Whiskey Business is the work of Joan Brown on accordion, Jen Calthrop on guitar, vocals and accordion, Peter Flower on mandolin, guitar and vocals, and Maura Flower on vocals, flute and percussion. Maungaturoto’s rising-star, singer-songwriter Chris Dent, will feature in the Classics at the Cove line-up along with talented and experienced singer-guitarist Nat Curnow of Mangawhai. The music festival promises to feature a wide range of musical styles and even musical theatre. The Department of Conversation employee is content in Dargaville for now but is planning another overseas tour in 2013. “I spent about eight months planning for the trip — working out contacts, venues and where I was going to go and I think that was what made the tour successful,” said Olly. “I travelled to Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Wales, England and Canada, where I met up with friends and fellow musicians so I always had a place to stay and people to work with as well. Letters to the Editor

Rate increases On 11 January the Kaipara Lifestyler’s front page announces that there will be a ‘significant’ district rate rise. This follows hot on the heels of properties in the area being ‘significantly’ devalued. I wonder if the people of Kaipara know that properties in other parts of the country have been devalued twice now — but the two devaluations together are not as much as the one inflicted upon Kaipara rate payers. Percentage wise, Dargaville properties have been devalued much more severely than almost any other area in the country. Mistakes in excess of $4 million in KDC’s Annual Plan (which the Mayor calls ‘disappointing’) are being blamed for the impending rates hike — while the Mayor also states that Kaipara rates have been kept ‘artificially low for a number of years’. This maybe did apply 10 years ago, but in recent times — and for all that Tiller has been Mayor — rates have gone up steadily until ‘low’ no longer applies, and Kaipara rates are now on a par with most of NZ — which certainly does NOT apply to our property values following this devaluation. I note the Mayor is very careful not to mention what I would think is probably the main cause of KDC’s debt — the $6 million white elephant they laughingly call a swimming pool — while the previous pool, easily big enough for a small town like Dargaville, still sits unused in Parore Street.

If the KDC’s ‘significant rate rise’ goes ahead, Dargaville will have the dubious distinction of being the silly little town with sky-high rates being paid for next to worthless properties — and if the people accept this, they will be giving a very clear signal that this is exactly what they deserve. Yours faithfully D Morgan, Dargaville

Food standards bill

Principal David Bargh welcomes a host of new educators to the faculty for the new term. It’s not uncommon for one or two new teachers to join the influx of new students at the start of the school year, but 2012 sees no less than nine educators across a wide range of subjects.

The Government is hoping to quietly ram through the Food Standards Bill. If it is passed, this bill will: 1. Stop people swapping or selling homegrown seeds and produce 2. Make vendors at growers’ markets pay a registration fee 3. Make Wwoofers illegal 4. There will be unaccounted food police who will be able to raid shops etc and sieze food and equipment

To build or renovate Dedicated to the best building practices With regulation of the building industry becoming more stringent as of the first of March this year, those seeking to build or renovate are presented with a seemingly endless list of options — all of which can have a big impact on how their investment turns out. Builders too, are faced with wide-reaching changes to their industry, some of which have created fear and trepidation about issues of liability, guarantees and contracts. But three prominent local builders are unfazed by the changes which

will redefine how builders and their clients deal with each other. In fact Certified Builders Grant Tregidga, Darryl Tregidga and Mark Pickering welcome the new regulations — and are confident that they already employ the best practices in building with the support of the Certified Builders’ organisation.

Certified Builders hold regular meetings to pool their knowledge, resolve issues in the trade and learn about new products, tools, designs and practices. This is all about keeping their skills on the cutting edge, and often involves big players in the building supply industry holding seminars for members to attend.

Established to provide networking, information and support for builders across New Zealand, Certified Builders is an egalitarian group which welcomes new members in the trade. They back up their members with sound advice on issues such as contract negotiations, help builders come together and share ideas, and most importantly offer a guarantee that Certified Builders are fully qualified, experienced and ethical in business.

After March 1 all building and renovation projects over $20,000 in value will be required to have a contract — and it doesn’t take much these days for the cost of even a simple extension, deck, barn or shed to cross this threshold. With a Certified Builder taking care of the job you can be sure that you’ll get a fair deal, a contract that’s easy to understand, and the ability to take advantage of their comprehensive 10-year guarantee.

To attain a gold card from the organisation requires a high level of building competence earned through experience and skill. To attain their platinum level of recognition means that a member’s business is of good reliability too — two halves of the big picture that come together to offer real peace of mind to potential clients.

Darryl, Mark and Grant are all proud of their record of service to the Kaipara community — many locals will be reading this article right now in homes they have built! And with the ongoing support of Certified Builders all of their businesses are looking forward to a future-proof future at the forefront of the building trade.

To build or renovate Perfect kitchens from start to finish The kitchen really is the heart of the home — it needs to be both elegant and functional, practical and stylish. From marble and granite benchtops to brushed steel appliances, trends in kitchen design have changed over the years, keeping pace with New Zealand’s sense of culinary adventurousness and our desire for open plan living. Daryl Coleman has been keeping up with the cutting edge of kitchen design for the last fourteen years as the man behind Start 2 Finish Kitchens — based in Whangarei but serving the entire mid-north. He’s a fully certified joiner who learned his trade in Motueka and moved north to offer his wide range of skills in designing and building stunning kitchens to the people of the Kaipara. What’s in the name? “Our aim is to work closely with our clients and make sure the whole job goes smoothly from start to finish,” says Daryl. “As part of

our service we offer project management free of charge — you’ll know exactly what’s happening with your new kitchen project even before we begin work.” This even means that Start 2 Finish will take care of organising the schedule for associated tradespeople — there’s no need to book a plumber or an electrician separately, for example. It’s all taken care of, and at any time customers can come and see their new kitchen taking shape at Daryl’s workshop. It’s a hands-on process which accommodates personal tastes and needs far better than an ‘off the peg’ approach which can sometimes be too conformist. Because of this truly ‘start to finish’ approach, there’s no job too big or small for Start 2 Finish Kitchens — an investment in quality you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Mangawhai’s Estuary Road has been improved and upgraded by local roading innovators Gravel Lock as part of an agreement between the Waipu based company and local residents. Troubled by dust, potholes and the illegal actions of young drivers imitating ‘drift’ style racing on the metal road, locals petitioned the district council for a solution. However Estuary Road was not scheduled for an upgrade for some time, leaving residents to contemplate another busy holiday season and a dry summer with dust and associated roading woes. Enter the team from Gravel Lock, who have developed a new way to build roads using their own patented technology and a whole lot of Kiwi ingenuity. Grant Lewis and his team, including local applicator Don Jamieson, swung into action, shouldering a share of the cost in order to showcase the results of their efforts. With minimal fuss and delay (in fact less than a single working day) Estuary Road was transformed from a gravel surface such as you’d find in many parts of rural New Zealand into a

road with a surface as hard as concrete. The entire process was undertaken using no more than a grader, a water truck, a small roller and Gravel Lock’s own specialised applicator truck. Residents of Estuary Road are now able to enjoy a better drive from their front door to the main road, and the likely advantages for safety, durability and even house prices are an investment for the future. A close watch will be kept on the ongoing condition of Estuary Road by not only the local council, but also interested parties in the farming, forestry and development sectors, eager to see first hand what Gravel Lock can do.

Why should farmers pay? by Bill Guest

Operations Director, Farmers of New Zealand

Fonterra’s bid to win the hearts and minds of New Zealand school children by introducing the milk for schools programme this year raises a number of interesting questions What is the cost to the New Zealand dairy farmer, and will it increase the domestic consumption of milk and the value of the Fonterra brand? Or, is it simply a victory for those loud critics who have cried foul over the last 12 months that Fonterra’s milk products are too expensive to purchase in the shops, and milk should be cheap because we dairy farmers produce much of it. You only have to visit the supermarkets and look at the numerous milk brand pricing and you will see a significant difference in the price of milk and milk products, cheeses and dairy products. Fonterra is not the only milk product manufacturer in New Zealand. The Fonterra Sanitarium school breakfast programme is also questionable. One school principal informed me that they have stopped the programme because the kids did not like the weetbix and extra staff were required to organise the breakfast taking away valuable education time. In the 1950s the government introduced the milk for schools programme. They built school milk sheds which contained a kitchen servery

and general shelter area where we kids could drink the milk, and how we hated it. There was no refrigeration, the bottled milk was too warm, and then they introduced powdered milk to save costs and it was mixed and heated in the kitchen copper. This was a disaster. No-one liked it. While Fonterra supposedly will supply milk fridges, one has to question whether it should be the responsibility of New Zealand farmers to give away their products in the hope of a return on their money. Why don’t we get the meat companies, crop growers, fuel companies and supermarkets to also contribute freely. New Zealand has the capacity to feed the equivalent of 220 million people. It is important that Fonterra’s milk programme is not viewed as a free giveaway with the public responding, so they should, farmers can afford it.

New innovations help the dairy industry keep cool Dairy farmers have to battle the heat during summer in a more significant way than the average New Zealander. Milking sheds are decidedly uncomfortable in the hotter months as machinery and animals fill the space with excess

heat, dust and flies. In addition milk must be chilled to exacting temperatures… an exercise which is costly using refrigeration technology alone.

AT LAST, A COST EFFECTIVE BREAKTHROUGH IN MILK VAT COOLING! COST EFFECTIVE MILK VAT COOLING!

Innovation has long been the advantage of

A very fine mist is powered by a high pressure pump through specially designed & angled nozzles

When the compressor is turned on the mist is drawn through the radiator and piping, cooling the system via flash evaporation

The DairyKool Trial results on a 9000L Vat were as follows: Normally turned on at 6.30am, reaches required temperature at 9.30am, with the DairyKool system on it reached required temperature at 7.30am

2 hours less for one milking event — a 67% improvement

the Kiwi dairy industry — we lead the world because New Zealand farmers embrace good ideas and clever solutions. So it is, that something as simple as a refreshing mist of cool water has been harnessed to beat the heat in our rural sector… in the form of a pair of new systems which have passed through their trials with flying colours, the DairyKool and the MasterKool. The concept of evaporative cooling isn’t a new one — it’s the principle behind cool sea breezes. Simply put, tiny particles of water can absorb some of the heat energy from hot dry air. By using this principle, an ultra-fine mist diffused by a high pressure pump increases the efficiency of your existing chiller unit, returning up to a staggering 46% improvement in energy efficiency. In recent trials (undertaken in Opunake, New Zealand), milk vats were reaching their desired temperatures on average two hours more quickly, running refrigeration equipment for a shorter period of time and saving money. Fonterra have given the DairyKool high praise, with the system officially approved by the Fonterra Food Safety Technical Division as having huge potential for the industry. Equally impressive is the MasterKool, a system which utilises a far more widespread mist of cool water particles to drop the temperature throughout the entire milking shed. By doing so it reduces stress in the herd, reduces odour, promotes hygiene and best of all repels flies without the use of chemicals! By using flash evaporation and efficient fans, the MasterKool system solves the age-old problem of flies and heat in the milking shed using nothing but pure water. Both of these game-changing new innovations are exclusively stocked in the Kaipara, Wellsford and Whangarei area by market leaders Advance Dairy and Pump, who invite farmers to come and see for themselves just what a difference they can make to both their comfort and their bottom line. As always, Advance Dairy and Pump are helping the Kiwi dairy industry remain the best in the world with cutting-edge technology.
