Holiday season boom time u by Andy Bryenton

Full camping grounds, bustling main streets and packed beaches have all been features of summer 2021, with large numbers of Kiwi holidaymakers visiting our part of the nation while international travel is restricted.

With Covid-19 shutting down holiday plans further afield, Northland became the most favoured destination for Aucklanders polled ahead of the Christmas and New Year’s break. This statistic was borne out by unprecedented traffic congestion following Christmas Day, as thousands streamed north to soak up the sun. In the Kaipara that meant camping grounds filled to capacity, requiring extra staff in some instances to help marshall what became ‘towns under canvas’. Campervans and motorhomes also came to help boost visitor numbers and the local economy, which, according to a survey of entrepreneurs across the region, may have been up as much as 25 per cent more than a normal summer. That’s a significant boost for

businesses hit by Covid lockdowns in the middle of 2020. One shop owner who remained open for business during the break was Helen Cairns of Dargaville’s Good Life Store. She opines that it was well worthwhile. “This trend toward travelling within New Zealand has made us appreciate and re-evaluate what New Zealand has to offer,” she says, describing a booming post-Christmas holiday season with many new arrivals. Other hospitality and dining operators are similarly impressed with their turnover during the holidays, with more than one joking that it was “the opposite of a holiday” due to brisk trade. “Tourists appreciated those of us who were open to welcome them,” said one barista. They also noted that Dargaville’s

recent announcement as one of New Zealand’s friendliest towns rests initially with hospitality and retail. Real estate, too, has seen a sharp uptick due to the showcase weather and tourist audience which came together for the holidays. Dargaville property professionals Greg Pollington and Jean Johnson remained open for business during the holidays, and say that a strong seller’s market has developed in tandem with the exposure. “In all my years in real estate I have never seen a market like this in Dargaville,” says Ms Johnson, who has been in the field for three decades locally. “We’re seeing multiple offers on listings, and people are definitely interested in moving to this area.” ¢

p Dargaville’s Jules Kidd has taken up the management position at the Gumdiggers Cafe in Matakohe recently. Jules developed a new menu she says is “classic cafe fare with a modern twist.” Cafe owner, The Kauri Museum, resumed management of the business late last year. “Jules’ experience has had an immediate impact on the offering at the cafe. She is committed to serving quality products using the new menu she created, using local ingredients where possible. It has been an instant hit,” said museum spokesperson Mary Stevens.

p An action-comedy story written by one of the journalists from this publication has been nominated by its publishers for a prestigious Kiwi literature award. Gad’s Army, by Andy Bryenton, is a story of magic, espionage, adventure and double-crosses in the second world war. It has been put forward to the judges of the Sir Julius Vogel Award for the best in New Zealand science fiction and fantasy writing. Vogel was New Zealand’s eighth prime minister and a writer of early speculative fiction himself, including the novel Anno Domine 2000, in which he predicted that women would one day hold high offices in government. True to his prediction, New Zealand has indeed had no less than three female prime ministers.

Recognition in calendar  Promising young Dargaville dancer Danielle Low will be featured in a showcase calendar produced by Dance Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ). The student of King’s School of Dance was photographed by Bindy Gummer against the dramatic backdrop of the Ripiro Coast, in an image which caught the attention of DANZ for their 2021 calendar. King’s School of Dance principal Sonja King says she was thrilled to see Dani’s photo by Bindy in the national DANZ calendar for 2021. She noted that it’s a great honour for any dancer to be included, especially when the majority of photos are of professional adult dancers.

Call for direct democracy Training boost u by Andy Bryenton

The proposed introduction of Maori wards for local government has incited debate over the democratic process, at a time when the mechanisms of fair representation in governance are a global issue. Those supporting the introduction of Maori wards believe that multicultural representation at this fundamental level of government is part of the partnership implicit in the Treaty of Waitangi. The rhythms of summer Return to the rails u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

The first big community learning and cultural series planned for the Baylys Beach Community Centre is coming in January, in the form of international drum and dance classes.

Trains and rolling stock have returned to the rails between Auckland and Whangarei, meaning that the rail corridor is now ‘live’ once again. As the revitalised track ramps up to capacity, there have been calls for the public to take extra care.

p Take care as trains return to the northern line — between 1998 and 2004, level-crossing accidents caused more than a third of all railway deaths, a figure which is easily avoided

p A previous drum workshop at the grand opening of the Baylys Beach Community Centre — now top tutors have planned an extensive programme there

The series of symposia, hosted by local drum teacher and enthusiast Josie Scott, will take place monthly from January 24 through to May 2, making good use of the new community hall and giving its acoustics a proper shakedown. That’s because the drum and dance tutors who have signed up to coach locals come with international provenance. Jimi Dale, Nathan Bregman, Yaw Asumadu and Koffie Fugah present workshops covering the drumming traditions and styles of West Africa, a

place of varied and ancient cultures. One such culture, the Mandinka people, flourished during what would have been Europe’s dark ages. They developed the distinctive hourglass-shaped djembe (pronounced zhem-bay) drum, the focus of these classes. The quartet comprises some of the top talents in this field currently in New Zealand. Booking in advance is advised for those who want to participate in the summertime series of drum workshops, supported by Creative Communities New Zealand. ¢

Last week, freight was once again in motion on the line, which has received an upgrade to the cost of more than $200 million. Opponents to the scheme, which saw five bridges reinforced and thirteen tunnels upgraded, were dealt a blow when heavy shipping was forced to utilise Northport at Marsden Point during Christmas. Whatever the future holds for the line, public safety is the primary concern right now for Kiwirail. It acknowledged that locals might be unused to the sight and the potential dangers of trains on the rails. “Freight trains are returning to the railway line between Whangarei and Auckland, following KiwiRail’s upgrade of the Northland line,” confirms Waka Kotahi, the NZ Transport Agency.

“Let’s all stay safe and remember to always look both ways for trains, only cross at official level crossings, and wait for the train to pass before crossing.” “With lowered tunnels and new bridges, the North Auckland line will be more reliable and have the capacity to take hi-cube containers. As well as reducing truck numbers, every tonne of freight carried by rail produces 70 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than the equivalent freight carried by road,” a KiwiRail spokesman said in December, as the project neared completion. This advantage may grow into further economic opportunities for the region, but in the short term, the safety message remains paramount. ¢

Pahi’s regatta tradition u by Andy Bryenton

When the first-ever Pahi Regatta set sail in 1876, internal combustion engines were still on the drawing board of Mr Benz in Germany. This year, petrol outboards will power bathtubs around the course, and sail and diesel will compete side by side.

p A fleet of varied watercraft roar to life as the annual Pahi Regatta delivers fun for the 145th time

The Kaipara’s longest-running waterborne gala day returns for Auckland Anniversary Weekend, with the commodore and club members of the Pahi Fishing and Boating Club extending a warm invitation to all to come and take part in the fun. “There’s a full weekend of fun at Pahi for anniversary weekend, with all your favourite events. Boat races, live music, Miss Pahi, food and drinks, carnival rides, bathtub race and heaps more,” says the club’s media liaison. They added that Pahi is proud to host the latest in 145 years of regatta extravaganzas. Boats from points all around the harbour come to play side by side with

Pahi’s finest, providing some thrilling on water action as well as a glimpse at vessels from throughout the years. The now-famous bathtub race features vessels cobbled together from the bathroom ware of locals. It has attained legendary status as the much cheaper, Kiwi back yard engineering version of the America’s Cup, another maritime race being held ‘somewhere just down the road’. It is a family-orientated event, and numbers are expected to be high this year due to increased local tourism. If you’re a visitor to the region, come and experience this time-honoured weekend of Kaipara celebration. If you’re a local, don’t miss out. ¢

Objects reunited after 60 years u by Liz Clark

Two carved busts depicting figures of a Maori warrior and woman with a child on her back were reunited as a pair at The Kauri Museum recently. Museum general manager and collections curator Dr Tracey Wedge travelled to Auckland to receive the bust of the woman and child from the descendants of Max Paykel. “The newest addition to the collection at The Kauri Museum is this large bust of a wahine and her tamariki,” said Dr Wedge. “Carved from a single piece of kauri gum, the bust was one of a pair commissioned by Max Paykel sometime around the beginning of the 20th century when he owned the gum store at Matakohe. “The carver was Robert Couch, of whom little is known at this stage. Couch also carved the matching tane figure. The pair were kept together until the 1950s when they were divided among family members. “The Kauri Museum has been the guardian of the male figure since 1991. With the arrival of the woman

Kaihu Valley Trail We have spoken previously about the cycle trail planned for Kaihu Valley and are pleased to advise that $4 million in external funding has been confirmed from the Provincial Growth Fund – so now we can seriously look at the benefits of this exciting project for the Kaihu Valley and the Kaipara District. The Kaihu Valley Trail (KVT) will start from Donnelly’s crossing and meander down to Dargaville – providing magnificent vistas of the land and the Kaihu River down the Kauri Coast. The KVT is a section of the Ancient Kauri Trail that will be developed in stages and – eventually link Omapere, on the Hokianga Harbour, to the Mangawhai Coast. The Trail will run mainly along the picturesque old railway corridor. Where this is not possible we’re working with the landowners to discuss options. The final route will be confirmed after these discussions and site visits with landowners along the trail are completed. The Trail will offer an opportunity to employ people in the local community who were previously unemployed, including those displaced by COVID-19 and also aligns with the feedback we received from the Kaihu Valley residents, listing the lack of economic opportunities as being one of their 3 main concerns for their community. Recruits will undergo a 6-week training programme to gain the skills required to build the trail and set them up for ongoing employment in the industry. Training is across a range of skills needed to develop the trail; machine operation, earthworks, civil construction, fencing, traffic management, vegetation, landscaping and more. If you live along the trail and have not heard from us yet, please get in touch by emailing kaihutrail@kaipara.govt.nz. Construction is expected to start in March and continue to October 2022.

Kaipara District Libraries Parking Bad parking can endanger other drivers and pedestrians, particularly around busy shopping areas, parks, schools and beaches. There are rules in place to regulate parking, and our team at Kaipara District Council is regularly out and about monitoring parking and behavior. Our parking wardens focus first on educating people to do the right thing, which means better parking and a better experience for everyone, but in some cases they may have no other option but to issue parking tickets. Some of the biggest parking issues our team deals with include: • Parking on bus stops • Parking on mobility car park spaces without displaying the relevant permit card • Obstructing entrances and exits to property • Inconsiderate or dangerous parking in public places (such as parking on the opposite side of the road facing oncoming traffic and parking on broken yellow lines) Please help keep your community safe – be kind and respectful to others, and adhere to the parking rules in our District.

2020 Retrospective Dementia care build begins

Massive support for rescue chopper

p Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust chair Graham Slatter checks timber framing on-site as the much-anticipated Riverview Rest Home Dementia Unit build gets underway. A project spearheaded by the community in response to the national need for aged care, the dementia unit, despite being delayed by Covid, saw a big boost with a government grant of $1.7 million in 2020. With an ageing population, care for older citizens is a big issue across the country, Maungaturoto’s efforts as a community showed foresight and compassion.

p Monique Bradley was the face of the Northland Rescue Helicopters’ annual appeal in 2020, giving back to the rescue heroes who saved her life after a horse-riding accident. This year saw Covid disrupt the usual popular More Fm and Dargaville Ford breakfast fundraiser. Still, numerous other small events were hosted by schools and sports clubs, with donations flowing in from businesses, private citizens and community groups to keep the choppers flying. Northpower and Top Energy matched public donations dollar for dollar up to $200,000. There was even a new children’s book published, commemorating the rescue helicopter in cartoon form.

Fighting the dump in the Dome

Covid response with compassion

p In a show of support across the parliamentary aisle, Northland MP Matt King, Labour List MP Marja Lubeck and Fight the Tip member Michelle Carmichael came together in April to oppose plans for a new landfill in the Dome Valley, south of Wellsford. Opponents cited the threat of leachate from garbage contaminating the entire Kaipara Harbour, while proponents queried where else to dispose of Auckland’s mountains of waste. The Dome Landfill saga would evolve throughout the year, with opposition mounting, and political and local leaders showing a near-unanimous front against the construction of the ‘super tip’ in the environmentally fragile area.

EPro8 victory for Pouto students

p When Covid-19 emerged as a global threat, the New Zealand Government reacted in a way which saw us become one of a very few nations not to suffer mass fatalities and ongoing lockdowns right through to the present day. In March, a package of economic support for businesses, and wage subsidies for workers, was rolled out to bolster the economy through a four-week total lockdown. We pushed through, with the help of core workers and the rural sector, and as a result of these measures and our own resilience, managed to eradicate Covid in the community while other nations floundered in indecision between public health and economic wellbeing.

NEW LISTING

p When the Northpower EPro8 challenge asked local schools to assemble teams and compete in engineering brain teaser, Pouto pupils rose to the occasion. Twenty-five Northland schools sent 70 teams from years five to eight to undertake a range of engineering-based challenges, half competing in Dargaville and the remainder in Whangarei. After a series of heats, 10 teams qualified for the finals at Whangarei Intermediate; the Pouto team came in third equal.

Harbour clean-up grant awarded

Water matters on our minds

p The government’s allocation of $100 million to clean up the Kaipara Harbour was hailed as “the biggest single step in environmental conservation we have ever had, and truly historic.” Funds were released to undertake sweeping environmental protection and remediation work around the harbour, affecting all of our regional towns and settlements. The potential for new jobs, better fisheries, quality of water and a boost to tourism were all discussed as the prime minister announced a $162 million project to improve waterways. The most significant share of this sum was deployed right here, to the delight of the mayor, council and environmental groups.

p Northland Regional Council Water Storage Project development manager Andrew Carvell (right) and farmer Terence Brocx, a member of the Northland Water Storage and Use Advisory Group check a site as areas in both the Far North and Kaipara are being investigated for water storage. The Provincial Growth Fund approved new dams for the north, including sites in Te Kopuru and Pouto, as part of a multimillion-dollar push to alleviate drought impacts and promote irrigation and new land use. Through the year, we’d see the formation of the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust to manage this asset, with ground broken on the first new dam before Christmas.

Harbour open for travel

p It was the year for wharf and pier revitalisation, as the Provincial Growth Fund pitched in to assist in refurbishing the network of harbour transport. Dargaville’s new pontoon was installed by a floating crane in November, while a new wharf for Pouto was planned and consented, the Northern Wairoa Boating Club gained a pontoon. Pahi’s wharf was slated for an upgrade, and tourism ventures on the water contemplated taking advantage of the new network.

Tangiteroria’s tragic blaze

11

Historic church contention

p Fire ripped through the Northern Wairoa Memorial Complex at 3am on an early January morning, destroying a community sports facility which had served the town of Tangiteroria since 1987. Resilient townsfolk vowed to rebuild, after firefighters from Dargaville and Whangarei battled to save the buildings, but were unable to prevent their loss.

Building a bright future p Since 1939, the church of Saint Michael on the Hill has been a place of worship and contemplation for the people of Hukatere. In 2020 the building became the centre of a tug of war, with confusion over its future. The Anglican Synod, which owns the land and church, were keen to sell up, with Mangawhai’s Historic Village proposed as a final location for the building. Village trustees opined that they were unable to raise the cost of buying Saint Michaels, but suggested a grant of the building and the sale of the land. Meanwhile, locals rallied to keep the iconic house of worship in place, citing the need to preserve the heritage of their area.

QUAD BIKE SAFETY p In a year when the housing crisis and spiralling home prices were big news, Dargaville’s high school-based building academy was praised for its efforts in solving the issue in a grassroots way. Former deputy prime minister Winston Peters attended the site where the team of upand-coming builders had successfully constructed the first of several homes to populate the north, a testament to the students, faculty and the local tradespeople who have lent their assistance to the project.

Maori Wards for Council?

Send Council a message that your voice cannot be ignored. Your signature matters. The Kaipara District Council (KDC) and the Northland Regional Council (NRC) have decided to introduce Māori wards. That will create seats for Māori, elected by those on the Māori roll, and seats for everyone else elected by those on the general roll. They made that decision without consulting the community. We believe the public should be consulted when councillors change the voting system to suit themselves. The petition right exists for that very purpose. If we collect enough signatures each council will be forced to hold a binding referendum. We need 6000 signatures for the NRC and 800 for KDC.

Please sign the PETITION so we can ALL have a say on whether Māori seats should be introduced. We do not have long to collect the signatures so please act NOW. If you live in the Kaipara district, please sign BOTH petition forms below and mail to Democracy Northland, PO Box 334, Whangarei 0110. If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to support more small local businesses, reduce the carbon footprint of the goods you buy, and to get out in the community to meet new friends, then there’s good news at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club. The hosts of a series of evergrowing market days leading up to Christmas have confirmed dates for more engagements right through the summer months. The next gathering of local artisans, growers, craftspeople and creative types is set for this Friday, January 22. “The markets we held before Christmas were the biggest ever,” says the NWBC’s market day coordinator Roxanne Kelly, speaking on behalf of a passionately pro-Dargaville committee. “This time around there are more options, new stalls, and some new ideas for dinner. Not only will the NWBC clubrooms be open with restaurant and bar facilities, but there are fresh choices outside as well.” Notably, the positioning of the twilight markets on the river bank has seen families gathering after work for an al fresco meal. That’s a trend the club would like to see continue. The decks of the clubrooms sit on the water’s edge, in a space, which was once a busy dockside for Dargaville commerce. Making it so again is a nice nod to the history of the area, and makes for a

New beginning for a respected name u by Andy Bryenton

For 2021 a new sign has appeared over a restaurant and catering business in Hokianga Road, bearing the name Empire Luncheonette. It’s a fresh enterprise for new owner Christine Marychurch, but it’s also the continuation of a tradition that begins in the golden age of black and white theatre, the 1930s. Christine has taken over from Ross and Edith Murdoch, well-known figures in Dargaville’s main street, who have been custodians of the Empire name for 25 years. “I’ve met hundreds, perhaps thousands of people doing this job,” says Ross, “Some of my customers are the children of the originals, Actually, when I worked with the Northland Times some of the current customers were paperboys, and some of them are now grandparents.” The Empire Luncheonette began as a conjoined soda fountain and confectioner’s shop to the now-defunct Empire Theatre, a huge old corrugated iron 1900s movie house. Next door, Miss AR Thurston provided moviegoers

with snacks and drinks for the popular shows. She was of small stature but great resourcefulness, and she sold the thriving business years later as its name and purpose changed. Thus, the Empire Luncheonette was born. Ross remembers working in the cinema as a young volunteer firefighter, watching old classic films from the back as he made sure nobody smoked cigarettes in the big wooden framed building. At the time he was a typesetter for the Northland Times. Eventually, he rose in the ranks to own the daily paper, the precursor as Kaipara’s source of news, and become a joint owner with his wife, Edith. After selling the newspaper, Ross landed a job filling in for Laurie Norriss, Empire’s owner, who was ill in hospital. Sadly, Mr Norriss passed away in treatment, and the job became permanent, with Ross and Edith taking charge in 1995.

p Ross and Edith’s famous lemon meringues, apple shortcakes and sausage rolls have a new baker for 2021, continuing a legacy that began back in the 1930s

“It’s been an interesting job over the years,” says Ross. “It’s fitting to offer special thanks to our customers and the public. “Since Covid, there’s been a phenomenal surge of support for us as a local business. We even get forestry crews calling on a Friday night to arrange

Water scheme flows on u by Andy Bryenton

Following up after a public meeting in late November 2020, the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust has begun operations to construct a reservoir near the town of Te Kopuru, at the narrowest point of the Pouto Peninsula in west Kaipara. Trust chair Murray McCully confirmed plans last week for the construction of a small reservoir near Te Kopuru before this winter. The trust has called for registrations of interest to complete earthworks associated with the site. The reservoir would then be enlarged during summer 2021–22 into a much larger facility. The trust has also called for tenders for works associated with the development of the irrigation distribution networks for the wider Kaipara Water Storage Scheme. “The trust has provisionally acquired land, subject to completion of due diligence and any necessary consents. It is now commencing a programme of engagement with parties interested in using water for horticultural production near Te Kopuru, including current and prospective landowners, post-harvest operators and the community,” Mr McCully said. Mr McCully said specific details of the site would not be available until due diligence was complete, and interest from commercial partners was confirmed. He hoped that phase would be complete by the end of March.

The trust would also seek to continue discussions with the Kaipara District Council regarding the provision of additional capacity for the Dargaville municipal water supply. Construction of the first stage of the Te Kopuru reservoir would require the cut and placement of around 700,000 cubic metres of soil, as well as construction of a dam embankment and other associated civil work and environmental controls. The first, a 750,000 cubic metre reservoir near Kaikohe, has already been granted consent and the building of an access road to allow construction of the reservoir to begin is underway. quick browse through the latest news reveals all kinds of unproven goings-on. Some of it seems a bit silly, like the folks who think the royal lady on the $20 note is actually a lizard from space. Then there are Orange Tom’s conspiracy loving friends, who have turned the internet into a kind of mystery circus. They think someone called Hillary is an actual witch, and that a man they call ‘Sleepy Joe’ is too daft to run the country, but is smart enough to have orchestrated the biggest electoral fraud in history, while leaving no trace of evidence. Some of these people decided to have a riot because of this, and now Orange Tom is in the doghouse. So are the social media companies who gleefully allowed all those weird theories and lies to get to this point. They’re all outraged and banning liars left and right this week, now that people have been shot. They were quieter than

Now that it’s on its way, the internet is full of crackpot theories about that, too. The computer billionaire who wants to put mini robots in the medicine to control your minds. The ‘fact’ that trying to cure a deadly disease is somehow taking away your rights. The idea that there’s no such thing as Covid, and all those dead people are just very committed actors. These same ‘patriots’ told you that the virus (that now doesn’t exist) was caused by cellular phone towers a while back. So here’s the question. The show must go on u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville will host the first big field days event following the Covid-disrupted year of 2020, as the Northland Field Days prepares to showcase the latest in the world of agriculture and farming. The big event in late February and early March was the last of the big pastoral shows held before Covid countermeasures clamped down across the country. During that confusing period of time, the agricultural sector carried the economy, providing export revenue and employment while other sectors were hard hit by the breakdown of international travel and the disruption of trade. During that time, new technologies were developed in the workshops and labs of farming-related industries. Tractors and implements which entered the research stage a decade ago came to fruition regardless of Covid. The enforced break from the rote of meetings and reports gave scientists and engineers time to contemplate, innovate and create. Alongside this, the major rural events of New Zealand’s farming calendar were unable to eventuate. The concept of staging a massive festival about the outdoors online proved heroic but flawed, and many planned events simply never pitched their tents as alert levels rose and fell unpredictably. That means there’s a back catalogue of fresh ideas and inventions, technology and thinking ready to be unleashed at the first show of the season; right there in Dargaville. Meetings have been held to explore new ways to make the event relevant, enticing, family-friendly and most of all, profitably worthwhile for the public, with new ideas and new exhibitors ready to unveil. As we approach the Northland Field Days for 2021, you can expect a lot of the details about these new players and fresh concepts to come to light in these pages. For now, the organisers of the

BOREDOM BUSTERS

Stars step into the ring u by Andy Bryenton

A night of thrilling professional wrestling action is promised by the athletes of Warrior Wrestling as they head to the Kaipara for a Showdown event on January 30, at the Dargaville Town Hall. Led by international athlete Aaron Henare, who competes at the highest level of the sport in Japan, the contenders for this multi-bout match up are insistent that this is a world away from just watching American theatrical style wrestling on television. A big difference that fans can expect is the level of physicality that we put it, says the Northland-born Henare. “Overseas, especially in America, wrestling has lost the competitive

aspect, but here we’ve got guys such as myself and Niwa who have travelled the world and are wanting to teach it to the next generation of Kiwis. “It’s a lot more combat sports-based with a grassroots Kiwi feel. Nothing can replace the feel of a live event. The emotional connection with a live crowd is special, and that’s what we want to bring to Dargaville.” Henare references the classic Kiwi love of the sport, from the days of shows

like On the Mat with legends like Robert the Bruce. At one time, wrestling was our second national sport after rugby, he says, and rekindling the flame is part of his mission. Fans have responded well to the more visceral, engaging bouts presented by Warrior Wrestling in our local small towns. “The most common comment I’ve got from our last show in Onehunga,

Auckland was, ‘oh, I thought this was the fake one’. Then they realise we’re actually hitting each other, and really competing! “As I mentioned earlier, I think there’s a preconceived idea of the American theatrical style of wrestling, but we’re really looking to create our own straight-up, Kiwi style of nononsense action that the whole family can enjoy.” ¢

The Kaipara District Council and other grants providers for community development have issued a reminder that 2021 means a new year of disbursements to worthy causes. Some open very soon, so interested parties are urged to be ready.

The Kai Ora Fund, which supports community gardens and local initiatives for food sustainability, is seeking applications now, through until March 24. Water restrictions have begun for the summer, even as a new reservoir begins construction in Te Kopuru to alleviate water shortages in the future. Water restrictions have been set to level two in Dargaville and Baylys Beach as the summer weather delivers reduced rainfall. It means a sprinkler ban is now in place for those areas, though it is still

permissible to wash your car, water your garden by hand or top up your pool. Fire bans are in place across the north, with Fire and Emergency New Zealand enforcing full restricted fire season rules. That means no outdoor blazes, fireworks or campfires; please check the FENZ website for information on applying for a permit for necessary fire use.
