‘No change’ after Dale appointment P6

 by Paul Campbell

The appointment of Kaipara commissioner, Colin Dale as interim chief executive of the Far North District Council won’t impact on his role at the Kaipara District Council.

Top cricketer joins Sport Northland Sport Northland has appointed former Northern Districts cricketer, Joey Yovich …

P7

“Commissioner Dale is well qualified to support the Far North District Council as it seeks a new chief executive. He has considerable CEO experience,” says chair of Kaipara commissioners, John Robertson. “Commissioner Dale’s work in Kaipara involves a time commitment of one to two days per week. That will not change.” Far North District councillors voted at a special meeting last week to appoint Mr Dale as acting chief executive until

a permanent replacement is found for former CEO David Edmunds who resigned earlier this month. Mr Dale was Acting CEO of the Council for about nine months in 2008–2009, CEO at Manukau City Council for more than 20 years and a Housing New Zealand director for five years. He is currently a commissioner at the Kaipara District Council, chairman of the Auckland Sport and Recreation Reference Group and chairman of the Northern Regional Advisory Committee

of the New Zealand Community Trust which distributes grants from gaming machine proceeds He has a holiday home at Mangonui. Far North Mayor John Carter said Mr Dale “knows the Far North District Council, has a wealth of local government experience and he is familiar with issues facing the sector in Northland at the moment. We are fortunate to have found a manager of his calibre who can hit the ground running and get down to business straightaway.” 

Heini called into the Dargaville and Kauri Coast Visitor Information Centre on his way through town and ended up giving an impromptu performance on his prized Büchel and Alphorn. The Alphorn was traditionally used by mountain dwellers in Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe and the Büchel is a variation on the Swiss Alphorn. Both are wind instruments with a conical tube and are carved from solid softwood. They have no lateral openings and therefore give the pure natural harmonic series of the open pipe. A rare treat!

Last Vegas In the comic tradition of The Bucket List, this bachelor comedy with a twist features the talents of Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas as an ‘over the hill’ brat pack set to party like it’s 1959 on the infamous and exciting Strip. The Railway Man Mistakenly branded a spy during WW2, Eric Lomax (Colin Firth) was subjected to imprisonment and torture at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Army. Years later, in a bid to let go of a lifetime of hatred and anger, he travels back to the scene of his imprisonment to confront his captor, accompanied by his best friend. The Wolf of Wall Street The powerful combination of Scorsese and DiCaprio does it again, bringing the hedonistic, cruel and crooked world of 1980s Wall Street to vivid life. Witness the excess and the greed which fueled an economic collapse, tinged with bizarre humor and real insight. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 Frenetic animated comedy following the exploits of an optimistic young inventor and his plans to feed the world. In this second instalment his magical machine goes haywire, producing living (and sometimes dangerous) culinary madness. Philomena With the outstanding talents of British actors Steve Coogan and Judi Dench, this extremely popular movie follows a jaded political journalist’s quest to help re-unite a mother and son long separated. Powerhouse performances define a touching story of redemption and family.

Feasibility study for Dargaville ‘Sportsville’

Zsalea Kavalinovich-Skeens and Jack Bradley were full of smiles after competing at the North Island Colgate Games this month.

A feasibility study on the proposed Kauri Coast Sportsville project for Memorial and Rugby Parks will get underway next month, thanks to the approval of a $20,000 grant from the Lotteries Community Facilities Committee.

 Smiles of success for 10-year-olds Zsalea Kavalinovich-Skeens and Jack Bradley who competed at the North Island Colgate Games this month

The Dargaville ten-year-olds were up against some tough competition at the athletics event but proved they have what it takes. “They are both amateurs when it comes to competing at this level, so they did really well,” says Zsalea’s mother, Anita Kavalinovich. “There is no registered club in Dargaville at the moment, so Jack and Zsalea compete under the Kamo athletics club. Compared to the other competitors in this competition, they‘ve had little training or club support. The Colgate Games are open to all children in an athletics club aged between 7 and 14 years old. Zsalea came sixth in the finals for 200 metres, seventh in long jump and first in the preliminaries for the 100 metres. “Unfortunately, Zsalea missed getting to the officials tent in time and never got to run in the 100 metre final, so she was a bit ‘gutted’. Overall though, it was was a brilliant experience for the children and they made some new friends.” The North Island Colgate Games 2014 were held at Kensington Park, Whangarei. They will be held in Wellington next year. 

The need for a centrally located multi-sport facility in Dargaville has been mooted for a number of years and in 2011, Kaipara District Council contacted Sport Northland to take a lead on developing such a facility. Sport Northland recommended that a sports facilities plan be developed for the town and in 2012, the Dargaville Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Plan was completed. The plan’s major recommendation was for the development of a centrally located multi-sport precinct at Memorial and Rugby Parks. A Board was established by Sport Northland last year to drive the project forward. “The new Board has been working extremely hard to consult with key stakeholders and keep the momentum of the project moving forward,” says Sport Northland chief executive, Brent Eastwood. “Now, with funding for the feasibility study secured, the project has cleared a big hurdle, as the completion of the study is a necessary requirement of all funding agencies.” Mr Eastwood believes that the development of quality facilities and infrastructure is a critical element in increasing participation in sport and recreation. The main recommendations contained in the 2012 study were around two possible scenarios for the development of a facility such

as Sportsville and the development of recreation facilities for youth at Selwyn Park, which has now been completed. The report suggests that over time, it is likely that other youth activities will also be identified for Selwyn Park. “This is fantastic news for Dargaville,” says Sportsville Board chair, Chris Biddles. “Without a feasibility study the project may have stalled, but now it is full steam ahead. “The local Board is made up of passionate people who just want to see a quality multi-code sports facility completed for the benefit of all. “We are grateful to Sport Northland for securing the initial funding and providing the Board with support and advice as we move forward”. 

Steady business for Kaipara Annual speedway returns this Anniversary Weekend accommodation providers  by Colin Patterson

 by Joanne Speechly

Kaipara accommodation providers say this summer has provided steady rather than spectacular business.

Dargaville Production Stock Car Club will hold its 17th annual race meeting this Anniversary Weekend, with cars expected from as far south as Rotorua, Huntly and Auckland. The 2013 meet was a bumper success and the club is hoping for a repeat this time around.

Most say business is driven more by events rather than tourism or holiday makers. Because of that they expect activity to peak in late February when Field Days takes place, followed in late March by the four-day BDO cycle Tour of Northland. Dargaville Motel owner Alan Clayden says bookings are similar to last year. “It’s been fairly quiet.” But he was fully booked for the Northland Swimming Championships last week. He expects to be busy in February and March, thanks to the cycle tour and Field Days. John Collins from the Northern Wairoa Hotel says his hotel relies on business and events-based bookings, with few casual or tourist guests. He says the Northern Wairoa is fully booked for both the Field Days and the cycle tour. Mr Collins’ family also own the Maungaturoto Hotel. Bookings there are also event-related, with accommodation fully booked for Maungaturoto’s 150th anniversary celebrations last November. On the east coast, the seaside town of Mangawhai has experienced

a bumper holiday season. Mangawhai Heads Holiday Park manager Noela Gunson says the holiday park was fully booked between Christmas and New Year, while its cabins are fully booked through to February. “We’re on a par with last summer which was pretty good because of the weather.” Matthew Diack from Dargaville’s Parkview Motel, who took over the motel in November, says bookings are better than expected, with more walk-in guests. Mr Diack says his business also benefits from events, such as the swimming competition. “We’re already fully booked for Field Days and the cycle tour.” Sue Taylor from the Kauri Coast Information Centre says people wanting to come to the Kaipara for specific events should book soon or risk missing out. She said her centre is helping competitors who have just registered for the cycle race and exhibitors at the Field Days who suddenly realise they need a place to stay. “We find them somewhere. We’ve put some in private homes.” 

 High-octane thrills were the order of the day at last year’s big meet. This year is set for even more on track action as over 60 cars rev up for an intense day of racing on Anniversary Weekend

“At last year’s annual meet we had 68 cars compete over nine grades,” says club captain and clerk of the course, Chris White. “And at our normal race days, we have actually been getting more race cars than the Whangarei, Kaikohe and Taipa clubs. “People can compete in different grades — C grade is probably the cheapest grade to get into, then there’s the production saloons, which is a step up and includes six cylinders and V8s, B grade is another step up and then there’s limited, stockcars and jalopies — a C grade car with a wrap-around bumper. We also do races for the ladies in C grade and production saloons. The annual meet kicks off at 12 noon Saturday and Sunday and people can register on the day or phone Chris on 09 439 2916 for more information. The club will also need volunteer help throughout the meet, both on and off the track. Racing on both days will be

followed by evening entertainment, including karaoke, and a prizegiving. The event is fully sponsored and there are prizes for the top three in each grade. “At the moment we have about 38 members, down from 60 last year, so we’re always looking for new members. Drivers can race from the age of 12, with parental consent, and when we have a few young ones, we have a novice grade. “Apart from the two day meet, we have upcoming race days on February 16 and March 2, when we’ll have the New Zealand C grade saloon title and the North Island production saloon title. Dargaville is a member of CTRA — the Circle Track Racing Association — along with the other three Northland clubs, so all our rules are the same.” Dargaville Production Stockcar Club would like to thank their major sponsors Wilson Earthmoving and Kaihu Motors for making this event possible. 

With ideal hot weather conditions more than 180 competitors sought placings in a wide variety of events. “We had swimmers in the under nine years of age, and over 17 years categories,” said c-president of Northland Swimming, Carlrine Gillespie. “Apart from our core swimming group, we had visitors too from Victoria in Australia and a number of Auckland swimming clubs. Two former Paralympic swimmers were also there. “This was the sixth year the event has been sponsored by Douglas Logging, with the earlier events actually held in Kerikeri.” Mrs Gillespie added that results had been compiled on Monday morning and ran to 58 pages, covering a myriad events. “We fortunately have electronic timing and computer recording to ease the load.” Dargaville accommodation was heavily booked for the event. ”We like to think local businesses got a good boost, with people arriving last Friday for the event, and for instance a large group stayed overnight on Sunday, and the Australian contingent was heading to Kai Iwi Lakes on Monday.” Body. 

Aikido: martial art with Whanau Ora ready a different philosophy to engage with families  by Joanne Speechly

 by Joanne Speechly

Experienced Aikido teachers Rhonda and Stefan Neuenschwander have recently relocated to Dargaville and they are keen to share their passion for martial arts with the community.

Nga Ripo, the Kaipara Whanau Ora collective, is part of a nationwide initiative that aims to provide health and social services to families using an integrative approach. The collective is made up of eight established service providers and employs three navigators who act as the first interface with families.

 With many years of practical experience between them, Rhonda and Stefan Neuenschwander are enthusiastic advocates of the martial art Aikido — translated as ‘the way of harmony’

The couple have almost 40 years of training and teaching between them and are well geared to teach Aikido according to their own philosophies. Four years ago they opened the original Aikido Out West Dojo in Woodlands Park, Waitakere and another dojo last year, on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. “We moved to Dargaville 10 months ago, which is home for Rhonda, but we had to wait until one of us was based here full-time to be able to commit to a dojo,” says Stefan. “Now that Rhonda has called it a day, after 29 years with Air New Zealand, we are excited about this new beginning.” The couple say they are very fortunate to come under the guidance of World Aikikai Foundation Representative for New Zealand, Nobuo Takase Shihan 7th Dan, who was Stefan’s first and longest teacher. All students’ gradings will be under his and the New Zealand Aikikai Headquarters guidelines. Aikido

is an efficient, extremely effective and nonaggressive Japanese martial art based on circular movements, whereby the opponents force is turned back and used to immobilise them. It is particularly popular with children and as a self-defense tool for women and girls. “It’s suitable for everyone — young, old, strong and weak. Aikido differs from other martial arts in that it is not a sport with rules, competitions, weight or size divisions or point scoring. “Aikido is non-competitive, so both attacker and defender help each other to attain higher levels of skill and understanding in training. The emphasis in Aikido is on both mental and physical control and developing self-confidence. In Auckland, we had kids come in who couldn’t look you in the eye, could barely speak but a year later, their shoulders are straight and they come in with a bounce.” 

“Whanau Ora is about providing better outcomes for whanau. We aim to empower whanau as a whole rather than focusing separately on individual family members and their problems,” says Kaiwhakatere Tuakana (lead n av i g a t o r ) , Jenny Huriwai. “It’s a whanau-centred approach and its about collaboration with service providers and positive transformation  The Nga Ripo team — dedicated to empowering local whanau “This is an holistic approach to for all families, Maori and non-Maori,” adds project manager, Tania Moriarty. service delivery, which aims to build “Although we are kaupapa Maori, any capacity within organisations. Blue eyes are generally the stronger of the constitutions, they are prone to inflammations like arthritis, skin inflammation like eczema, psoriasis and they do much better off dairy proteins as they don’t metabolise them properly. People with brown eyes are more prone to liver, circulation and endocrine problems such as varicose veins, piles, and hormonal problems and do much better away from fatty rich foods.

Top cricketer joins Sport Northland

Anniversary Weekend fishing competition  by Joanne Speechly

 by Joanne Speechly

Sport Northland has appointed former Northern Districts cricketer, Joey Yovich, as their new community sport advisor for the Lower North, which will see him based in Dargaville several days a week. The position, vacated by Tama Jones, involves working at a community level in the Northern Wairoa with clubs and other sports organisations to meet identified sport outcomes. The focus is to get more people participating in sport and recreation, increase the number and quality of volunteers and improve delivery of sport by supporting club and sport organisations. “Sport Northland has a fantastic culture and environment and I love being a part of the community,” says Joey. “I played at amateur level before going professional, so grass roots and club sport is a huge part of who I am as a sportsperson. “My role will see me going into clubs, making sure they have sound systems and structures in place, providing support and helping them with their continual grow. I’ll also be dealing with schools and helping kids become actively involved in clubs. It’s about people, creating really good relationships, support and providing a sounding board. It’s exciting. Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club’s annual Anniversary Weekend fishing competition is on again this year with some great prizes up for grabs. The popular East Coast event is the first of the many competitions the club hosts throughout the year. On Saturday, January 25, the fishing begins at 6am and continues until weigh-in at 4pm, followed by prize giving and the fish auction. There are cash prizes up for grabs for the heaviest catch in a selection of species and lucky spot prizes. Junior winners will receive vouchers for the two heaviest kahawai and snapper. They can also fish in the open section but they must hold an open ticket in their name to be eligible for prizes. The open categories include kahawai, snapper, trevally, John Dory, kingfish and crayfish. The fish auction, including crayfish, will see the day’s catch go to the highest bidder and is also a fundraiser for the Pontoon Boat Ramp Extension Project. Money that had been previously allocated to the project has had to be reapplied for due to changes within the local council. “The competition has been very popular and we get good numbers for a little town,” says club captain, Rob Cameron. “This is the first big event of the year, so we’re looking forward to it.” On Saturday, February 8, the club will hold the Mangawhai Service Centre Ladies Day Competition and the Timberworld Easter Competition is set to return for its tenth year in April. Tickets are available from Darryl at Mangawhai Fishing & Tackle at Mangawhai Heads. For more, information visit www.mangawhaiboatingand fishingclub.org.nz. 

Taking the pain out of painting

Flying kiwi rides again  by Andy Bryenton

The insignia on the nose of the world’s most coveted supercar may seem like an ‘inverted swoosh’ to some.

Not too long ago, painting your car, bike or quad was a massive undertaking — a task best left to the professionals and costing potentially thousands of dollars. But that was before an intriguing new option became available in the local market, thanks to the folks at DAE in Dargaville. For the last few months, more and more Plasti Dip paint jobs have been seen around the Kaipara — a smooth finish for bumpers, mag wheels and even whole vehicles provided by a very innovative ‘tear away’ spray-on surfacing product. The thick, hard-wearing finished product covers minor scrapes and scuffs and leaves a smooth surface which, amazingly, can be peeled away like latex rubber when it’s time for a change.

Originally designed for cosmetic appeal, Plasti Dip has been taken up enthusiastically as a protectant as well — a literal ‘second skin’ which repels moisture and deters damage. With a professional grade applicator gun now available to hire, as well as spray cans in a range of colours, Plasti Dip give auto buffs a chance to have things any colour they like — and to change their mind without damage or excess costs.

 Fun fact — Rowan Atkinson (of Mr Bean and Blackadder fame) is a big McLaren fan. He owns a very rare, multi-million dollar F1, the fastest supercar of the 20th century.

But those in the know will tell you that it’s the stylised kiwi of McLaren Racing — a name with serious clout in the super-fast stakes. Recently the British company’s latest offering — the stunning, hybridised P1 — blitzed Germany’s Nurburgring raceway in less than seven minutes. Readers may remember that Holden’s hyper-hot Redline V8 ute managed to smash a world record by tackling the ‘Green Hell’ in 8 minutes 19 seconds last year. Why no seconds and microseconds on the P1’s lap time? Frank Stephenson, the P1’s designer, says he wants to defuse a ‘top speed battle’ before it begins. “The reason we aren’t saying is because, say we do a 6min 40sec. Porsche’s going to come back in the

spring next year and go for a 6min 35sec. Ferrari can always just say that they’ve done it on their simulators and they’ve gone 6min 29sec. Where do you stop? It’s like a horsepower or topspeed race. At some point someone has to pull the plug and say we’re happy we’re under 7 minutes; it’s a great time.” But the figures speak for themselves. With a combined v8 and electric horsepower rating over 900, this sleek roadgoing masterpiece is no sluggard — and it’s a machine worthy of the great Bruce McLaren’s name. It’s also a full plug-and-charge hybrid, meaning that with the flick of a switch the P1 turns from fire-breathing velocity addict to eco-friendly, congestioncharges beating electric car. 

Working harder for Kiwi farmers  by Andy Bryenton

Japanese automakers Suzuki have picked up on the engineering cues of the Willys Jeep and the Land Rover Defender with a machine called the Farm Worker — and it has proven to be real niche-filler for the makers of the Kizashi, Swift and Hayabusa.

as-nails farm bikes. But this machine is above and beyond a quad, or even its beefier big brother the UTV. The Farm Worker is a no-nonsense small truck, with the carrying capacity to match — either in wellside or flat deck configuration. Its 1.3 litre Suzuki engine provides ample power through a hi/lo ratio 4WD transmission system, with enough ground clearance and suspension to handle the rough stuff.

It’s simple too, with old-fashioned manual levers, window winders and shifter, a real military level of build toughness, and a design that’s easy to hose down clean. As an added bonus, even the base model (a steal at under 17k) comes with a proper roof, a fully enclosed cab, a heater, radio and wipers for when the weather packs in. You don’t get luxuries like these on a quad bike! 

Lighter than the ‘Disco’ or Toyota’s Land Cruiser but just as tough, the little 4x4 sets a solid benchmark for off-road, on-paddock performance. Its predecessor, the Suzuki Samurai off-roader, is still used by hunters on the back blocks to this day, and a smartenedup street model called the Jimny was for some time the sponsor vehicle for 4x4 enduro events on Kiwi television. Like the best automotive designs, the little

Samurai’s ruggedness has stuck around, evolving into a specialised range of farm vehicles that are up to any task. The Suzuki Farm Worker family contains a range of variations on the robust, shortwheel-base off-roader, utilising tried and true engineering and some neat ideas to boost versatility around the farm. want to pursue. At NorthTec you’ll learn the basic skills required to work on your own place including practical experience on small building projects, plus how to safely operate fixed machinery and power tools. If you know building is for you, our courses can prepare you for an apprenticeship with a building company. You will cover all the theory units needed for your apprenticeship, plus you get the required hands-on experience with a builder. The practical experience helps reinforce what you learn in the classroom. You learn the language of building, get into good work habits, and equip yourself with the skills employers are looking for. This is a great way to get an understanding of what it takes to be a builder. At NorthTec we manage an apprenticeship scheme which assesses your practical skills against the practical units in the National Certificate in Carpentry, with regular site visits throughout the term of your apprenticeship. The courses provide you with a qualification that is recognised by the construction industry. As well as coming out with practical skills, students get credits that count as part of an apprenticeship. This training can therefore be a useful stepping stone into our National Certificate in Carpentry, or into an apprenticeship. And it’s not just one for the guys. More and more women are taking our courses and making use of the skills in their own homes — or going on to apprenticeships. So have a look online at www.northtec.ac.nz to see what we can offer to do for your future career.

E D U C AT I O N St Joseph’s unveils 2014 school leaders

Preparing for the start of school

Before St Joseph’s Catholic School students broke up for the 2013 year they were told the names of the school’s leaders for 2014.

 by Colin Patterson

Starting school is one of the most significant events in your child’s young life. For five days a week they will have to leave the safety and familiarity of their home environment to go to a strange place, make new friends and learn lots of new things. For many it’s exciting, although it can be overwhelming. As parents we have a key role to play in helping our young ones to adjust to school life. Preparation is important. We can’t expect children to like school unless we help them get ready. You should take your child to their new school before they start. Visits can help children get familiar with the layout of the school, so they know where important features are (e.g. playground and toilets). It is helpful, but not essential, if your child has learned some basic knowledge such as how to hold a picture book and turn the pages carefully, the names of colours, the letters of the alphabet, the numbers one to nine, and how to write their name. If your child can already recognise some words, their teacher will take that into account when developing your child’s learning programme. The teacher will also need to know: • After-school plans and who picks up your child when you are not able to • If your child has any special health needs • What your child likes to do, what they are good at and what makes them happy

Arrive Alive...

Don’t Drink and Drive

School is the start of a journey into life. Your input can make it an enjoyable and enthralling one for them, you and everyone else. 

Principal Glenis Guest says they are Pilisita Hu’Avi and Jerecho Clarke (pictured). Both will be year 8 students. “Their role is to be the light of Christian leadership of the senior students, and show by example their responsible attitudes. Their tasks are to oversee the duties that the rest of the seniors have, welcome and to thank visitors and communicate the student voice, among others.” St Joseph’s Dargaville is an integrated school but with a Catholic

character. It has 120 students from years one to eight. 

Kauri Coast Rest Home and Hospital has received the award for Most Improved Facility out of the 45 Bupa care homes in New Zealand and while the recognition is well deserved, it came as a big surprise. Facility manager, Heather Himiona, was presented with the award at Bupa’s annual conference in Wellington and says she was somewhat distracted when the award was announced. “It was quite funny because they also do a poster competition and I really wanted to win that,” says Heather. “We didn’t win, so I was sitting there questioning our poster when they announced that we had one the Most Improved Facility award. They did a

little spiel about Kauri Coast and our performance over the last year and I was totally zoned out!” The award is based on the rest home’s performance over three years and takes into account customer and staff satisfaction, business performance, quality of care and occupancy. This is the second year running that Kauri Coast has been the recipient of an award at Bupa’s annual conference. In 2012, they were awarded the Bupa Way Award,

which recognises their commitment to providing top quality care with a personal touch. “To me, this award means recognition of all the hard work and incredible commitment of our staff. It’s their award, they are the ones who have put in the hard yards. “The award also recognises how far Kauri Coast has come in the last
