Rest home construction is underway u by Paul Campbell

The first two stages of a multimillion-dollar redevelopment of Maungaturoto’s Riverview Rest Home and retirement village are underway with contractors now on-site undertaking extensive preparations for what will become a 14-bed dementia unit.

The current project spearheads a planned $4 million development project, which Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust chair, Don McKay says is “a project for the community, by the community” with plans for further facilities also underway. These are expected to evolve into hospital care level as well as wider rest home accommodation. “We are well on our way now, with fundraising continuing, to realise a plan that involves us all to care for our people,” he said. Plans originally were for the construction of Stage One as an eightbed dementia unit, but planning has been refined to begin a combined Stage One and Two project, adding an additional six beds. An ageing population has placed an increased demand on the rest home facilities. “The number of people needing residential dementia care outstrips population growth, and demand for dementia services is predicted to grow by seven per cent each year. We are in a position where we are having to turn prospective clients away. And our challenge is to effectively meet increasing demands,” said Mr McKay. Updating kitchen dining and lounge facilities and exercise areas are all part of the project, which will be financed both commercially and through local fundraising. As well as bank finance, the trust is inviting financial commitment in

Big plans for museum

u by Ayla Miller

u Ayla Miller

Work to install 28 CCTV cameras around Dargaville has begun — with plans to have them up and operational in the next two months.

There has been a shuffle on the Kauri Museum Board, and new board members are bringing with them new skills and new ideas.

p From left: Kauri Museum chair Mark Vincent and new board members Athol Cartwright and Allan Coutts

p Local business owner Debra van Leeuwerden hopes that having CCTV cameras around town will mean less crime in the community

This is the beginning of stage one in a joint initiative between the Dargaville Community Development Board and the police, working closely with the Dargaville Business Forum. Development Board chair Allan Mortensen says their main aim is prevention rather than apprehension. “We deserve a safe community and we need to have one if we want to encourage people to live, work and play.” Debra van Leeuwerden, who owns AD Focus with her husband Anthony says the cameras can’t come quickly enough. They had three cars broken into in the early hours of Wednesday, January 3 whilst they were parked in their gated carpark. “We have captured it all on our security camera system, but our cameras weren’t quite clear enough to pick up the car number plate, which is a real shame. “I think we should already have CCTV cameras in Dargaville, because the people that are that way inclined are coming here to do their crimes.

They can’t do them in other towns that already have cameras because they’ll get caught.” Debra believes if they had had a better security camera then they would have been able to see more detail, which would help police catch the thieves or, more importantly, they could have been observed earlier while walking around the town in the early hours of the morning, which would have prevented the cars being broken into. There were several other break-ins reported that night as well. “We’ve got a vague description of the vehicle. It was a light-coloured station wagon, possibly a Nissan Wingroad, Subaru or a Honda Odyssey.” It is planned that the cameras will be linked to the Dargaville police station and monitored by a paid observer and community volunteers. To report any further information regarding the AD Focus break-in, or any other crime, make an anonymous call to 0800 555 111. ¢

Late last year the board farewelled Clive Smith after 35 years, and Ralph Williams after 24 years. Mark Vincent was elected as chairperson, whilst Athol Cartwright and Allan Coutts have joined the board of nine. Mark along with his wife Cindy run a small scale dairy support operation, and he is the founder of Otamatea HarbourCare Society. Plans for the future include installing possible solar cells, further promotion to locals and making the exhibitions more interactive for the younger generations. Athol has a background

in teaching and brings with him governance and leadership experience. He is particularly interested in continuing to promote the museum and grow visitor numbers. “There has been a big downturn in traffic through the museum and I would like to see that improve.” Allan Coutts moved to Matakohe 18 months ago and has a degree in accounting and business. “There are parts of the business that need to be reviewed, and I’d like to see the business grow and prosper,” he says. ¢

Challenging the candidates

Meet the candidates evenings have been held throughout the eastern Kaipara, giving residents a chance to quiz their mayoral hopefuls and similar meetings will continue in the west of the district during this week

‘If we look after the environment, the environment will look after us’ — That’s the philosophy behind the inaugural Pouto Lighthouse Challenge, organised by Joesephine Nathan and Tipene Nathan. Pouto woman and PhD student Joesephine has returned home after completing her masters and living in Wellington, and is organising this multisport event with the aim of reconnecting people with the area. “I’ve been away for the last two and a half years and now I’m doing my PhD on kaitiakitanga — guardianship of Pouto Point,” she said. Participants can choose to do either the 13km sand bike ride, run or walk from the point to below the Pouto Lighthouse or a 10km kayak from Pouto Point, into the harbour entrance to Tauhara and back. “Tauhara is the Maori pa where our ancestors lived. It’s all about reconnecting people with the environment and sharing energy. “I want to attract people to the point so they can see why I’m so passionate about trying to create positive change.” Joesephine is no stranger to organising this type of event. Her first was a 200km cycle up Mt Eden to raise awareness of sexual abuse in children. She and Tipene Kenny are also founders of Gumboot Friday which is about suicide prevention. Kaiwaka There was a relatively small turn out of about 30 people at the Kaiwaka mayoral candidate meeting organised by the Kaiwaka Sports Association. KSA president Wayne Leslie said many of the questions from the crowd were about roading. “There was a bit of a slanging match between Peter Wethey and Bruce Rogan as we expected. They are diametrically opposed so there was no way we were going to find any common ground.” Mangawhai Roughly 80 people attended the candidates evening organised by the Mangawhai Business Association. Chair Richard Gunson said he felt most of the audience went away with their questions answered. “Roading was mentioned quite a bit and social housing. Candidates spoke mainly about the direction they want to take the council. “Brian McEwing, Peter Wethey and Jason Smith spoke of a ‘steady as she goes’ attitude.” Maungaturoto Things got heated at the Maungaturoto evening resulting in Bruce Rogan leaving during question time. Maungaturoto Residents Association

president Terri Donaldson said besides that fiery exchange there were some good questions asked from the floor. “One question was asked about the i-site that we used to have in Dargaville and all the candidates were positive about that. “I think the mood at the end of the meeting was pretty good. Even if people didn’t get a chance to ask their questions during the meeting they had an opportunity afterwards.” Paparoa While oral questions may have put candidates on the spot at times, Progressive Paparoa’s hosting of the mayoral candidates election meeting last Thursday night was a successful exercise, according to convenor, Graeme Taylor. Each candidate was given three minutes to speak following written questions from the floor with one minute to answer. “This was followed by oral questions from the floor, which put some on the spot. But it all was done with a certain amount of decorum. I believe this election is extremely important and people would like to see continuity, so a mayor who can lead for two or three terms.”  ¢

Kaipara fleet comes home Cable to boost internet capacity

u by Paul Campbell

A recent window of fine weather saw four launch owners who spent a couple of summers based on the east coast traverse Cape Reinga, a three-day voyage of some 350 nautical miles home to Kaipara.

p The four launches made it to Pahi home base in perfect formation

The launches now moored back at their Pahi anchorage are Ralph Weber’s Running Bear, Gary Weber’s Grey Nurse, John Crompton’s Cosmic Raider, and Barry Mockett’s Kahala. The small fleet left on Wednesday January 10. “We travelled up to Whangaroa where we fueled up and spent the night, leaving at six in the morning to go round the top to Cape Maria van Dieman,” said Mr Mockett. “We spent the night there and left again at six and traversed the top, down the west coast to Opononi and

stayed there the night before heading home to Pahi the next day — a total of 42 hours.” Crossing the notorious Kaipara entrance bar was uneventful. “I had George Weck on board and he asked ‘where’s the bar’ and I said, we’ve crossed it George. “We all used about 400 litres at about $500. It’s $1,800 by road transport. We caught a few snapper at the top of the island. We all had a great trip.” Each launch had from three to five crew to share the work on board. ¢

The Hawaiki Submarine Cable will land at Mangawhai Heads later this month and is set to bring New Zealand faster internet speed when it’s switched on in June. The fibre-optic cable is currently being installed on the $500 million, 15,000km submarine cable system — with one in each hemisphere. The cable will land at Mangawhai Heads beach by Bream Tail Farm and is currently scheduled for Saturday, January 27. “There can be schedule changes arising from operational matters and weather, so the landing date may change. We will keep the public notified via the Mangawhai Focus website,” said Hawaiki’s NZ programme manager Richard Howarth. The CS Responder began rolling out the cable in Sydney last November. It will stop by Mangawhai on its way to the United States. An area of the beach will be closed to the public for approximately three days whilst the work is completed.

The northern end of the beach and the headland walking track will remain open to the public. The cable will travel under the sand dunes to the cable landing station. The underground ducting was installed using Horizontal Directional Drilling technology, ensuring the sand dunes were not disturbed. Hawaiki are also sponsoring the Mangawhai Museum special communications exhibition, which tells the story of communications in the region from early settler days to submarine cables and the Hawaiki project in particular. “It’s just letting people know how we are progressing through the ages. For young people its learning about the history and for the older generation it can be seen as a trip down memory lane,” says museum manager Emma Gray. ¢

Boxer goes for gold

Eighteen-year-old Tui Vea of Wellsford Boxing is about to become the youngest boxing competitor at the upcoming Commonwealth games in Australia.

p Kaipara District Council general manager infrastructure Curt Martin speaks to concerned residents and property owners at a public meeting held at the Mamaranui Bowls Club last week

Insanitary Building Notices were issued in December to properties on this line that have no acceptable alternative supply of potable water, advising residents they should not consume, prepare food, bathe or clean their teeth with the water. At the meeting voices were raised against Kaipara District Council staff, who attended to explain the situation. “The Kaihu Raw Water Line was never intended to be a potable water source,” said general manager infrastructure, Curt Martin. “The council is only liable for the potable water that it supplies to its residents.” Over the years houses

were connected to this line, which comes from the Kaihu River, without council permission. Residents were concerned they would be hit with a large bill to find alternative water supplies immediately. However councillor Julie Geange said the council will work with each resident or property owner to find a solution. “There is no time frame for those affected to correct this issue, but it cannot be put off forever.” The notices are in effect until April. KDC staff said they would continue to directly supply potable water to the affected houses until a solution is found. ¢

p Tui Vea, coach Fili Maka and Onyx Lye had a successful year with Wellsford Boxing and are looking forward to 2018

Tui has his heart set on winning gold when he represents Tonga at the games held in the Gold Coast on April 4-16. “Tui represented Tonga at the Commonwealth Youth Games 2017 in Nassau, Bahamas in July last year and this was his first international bout. He fought against a very experienced boxer from Wales but lost by points in a very close fight,” says Wellsford Boxing head coach Fili Maka. Fellow Wellsford boxer 15-year-old Onyx Lye has also had a successful year. “Onyx is originally from Maungaturoto

and won his first New Zealand National Junior 75kg title 2017 in Rotorua. He had two fights, his first fight was won by points and he went through to the finals winning by technical knockout,” says Fili. Both Tui and Onyx from Wellsford Boxing, also represent Auckland Boxing Association. Fili has also had a good year, winning two awards at the New Zealand Nationals for Coach Most Scientific Award for Junior and Coach Most Scientific Award for Youth. ¢

Have your say The Kaipara mayoral by-election is fast-approaching and Kaipara District Council are encouraging all residents to make sure they are enrolled and ready to vote when their papers arrive. As a result of an extraordinary vacancy by former mayor Greg Gent, under section 120 of the Local Electoral Act 2001 a by-election will be held on Saturday, February 17 under the Single Transferable Vote electoral system by postal vote. “A big part of living in the district is getting involved with local government elections. You need to ensure you are registered to vote either on the General Roll or via the Ratepayer Roll,” says KDC spokesperson Ben Hope. Papers will be posted to all voters who are enrolled to vote at least a month before the voting starts. Anyone who is correctly enrolled can vote in the local elections where they live. Voters who own a property within the Kaipara area, but live outside, can go on the Ratepayer Roll. This means they can then vote in the area where they pay rates and the area where they live. Ratepayers who do not live in the area must apply to the electoral officer for the local council area where they own property, but do not usually live. The electoral officer will send you out a form to complete, sign and return so they can check your eligibility. If a voter is registered on the Unpublished Roll, they will need to apply to the electoral officer at the local council to receive their voting papers.

p Kaipara District Council spokesperson Ben Hope says it is important to get registered for the upcoming by-election

People overseas can also participate in the by-election by ensuring they have updated their postal address to their overseas one in order to receive their papers. Voting papers for local elections cannot be downloaded. Alterations to the Resident Roll can be made by either completing the appropriate form at any Post Shop, telephoning 0800 ENROLNOW, or visiting www.elections.org.nz. ¢

ADVERTORIAL

New approach to leadership Stephen Soole believes that a different leadership approach is needed if we are to rebuild credibility and restore Kaipara’s voice. Born and bred in the Kaipara and having worked for local government for over 20 years Stephen feels he is qualified to do the job as mayor. He and his wife Carolyn have been married for 38 years and they have three adult children. They live in Hoanga, Dargaville. “Having recently returned from two years living in Vanuatu and volunteering as an agricultural adviser, working closely with farmers and communities to lift their subsistence based agricultural industry into that of a sustainable economic model in what is a developing country, I feel very passionate and energetic about the chance to lead changes in the Kaipara. I have an empathetic ear to listen to the different needs of the very diverse communities we have here. With a deeply caring approach to the social, environmental, economic and cultural challenges that this presents our district. “The Kaipara is at an extremely critical crossroads, with different pressures and needs across the district that will influence and shape the future of this district. “I believe the role and challenge for the mayor is to lead a well-informed council working collaboratively with its communities. We need to build upon our

strengths, lay the groundwork and set the framework and think smarter to go further with the resources we have, to tackle the ongoing issues around roading, water, wastewater, stormwater, etc. “I believe it takes a leader with vision, a vision of where the future lies and how to get there, with a willingness to step up to hard decisions and not be afraid to challenge conventional thinking if we are to realise our potential. “I feel the skills and knowledge I have learnt over many years from grassroots to senior management in local government have been beneficial for me to do just that as your future mayor.”

For a Fresh Approach  Passionate about the Kaipara  Progressive Leadership  Proven experience in Local Government  Integrity  Approachable

Graduation day

Tv show to cover regatta

u by Paul Campbell

The Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters in Wellsford has held its graduation ceremony at the Coast to Coast Hauroa Trust.

After 132 years in the business of offering plenty of fun both on and off the water, the Pahi Regatta will be held again over Anniversary Weekend and this year cameras from the television series Coast NZ will record the action for broadcast later this year.

p The smiling faces of the 2017 HIPPY Wellsford graduates

Trust member Richard Te Haara, presented awards to 11 children that graduated the two-year programme and a further 12 that completed their first year. The programme, which is designed to ‘foster the bond between parent and child’, had 80 people attend the graduation. “It is such a rewarding experience being able to celebrate each child and family’s successes,” said HIPPY coordinator, Louisa Christian. “This demonstrates commitment by the parents and caregivers, all of whom have a passion for helping with their child’s learning.” HIPPY Wellsford employs tutors from the community and

parents to work with families teaching them a set programme with their child for 15 minutes a day, five days a week for two years, preparing their child for school. The organisation is currently funded for 45 families and three tutors and is now taking enrolments to start next March. “Parents say they are gaining confidence in teaching their child and creating a special bond with them. “They say that as parents their patience grows and they understand how their child is developing.” Contact Louisa on 09 423 6006 ext 6 or email hippy@ctchauora.co.nz. ¢

p Launch racing gets underway at a Pahi regatta

The event attracts contestants and spectators from around the north and beyond. “The television coverage will mean great exposure for the regatta and northern Kaipara,” said deputy commodore, Mike Donald. “And as ever, the accent on the weekend will be on safety, and great entertainment for the whole family on what is a nostalgic look at old-time harbour entertainment.” This year as ever, the Pahi Beach Holiday Park will be busy with tents, caravans, mobile homes and house trucks for three days of harbourside

Message from the Ministry of Health Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that is standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals which may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Road Works

30

The NZ Transport Agency and Kaipara District Council is asking motorists to slow down as they travel through road surfacing work on their summer journeys. To help ensure effective repair, we’re asking drivers to slow down and for truck drivers to change gear before they arrive at any newly finished works. Even at unattended sites, speed and gear changes on fresh surfaces are putting additional stress on the roads.

Road Works for the District – January 2017

PUBLIC NOTICE Area specific works planned during January include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the District. • Unsealed/ Sealed pothole repair throughout the District when conditions are suitable. • Water table restoration – Bickerstaffe, Hilliam and Waimata Roads. • Sealed Pavement Repairs – Throughout the Ruawai area. • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Tokatoka and Curnow Roads. • Sight Improvements – Avoca Road. Other routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during January include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and grading of select roads pending sufficient rainfall. Area specific works completed during the last month include: • Water table restoration – Redhill, Child, Batley and Morrison Roads. • Culvert Renewals – Waihue Road. • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Cove and Pouto Roads. • Mechanised Tree Pruning – Pouto Road. • Sight Improvements – Opanake and Waihue Roads.

Caravan Dump Sites A reminder that those utilising self-contained caravans while travelling through our district please ensure all waste is dumped at the appropriate locations. Dump sites can be found at the following locations: • Mobile Dargaville – Cnr Poto St & Normanby St (-35.939874 173.870699) • Caltex Dargaville – Cnr Victoria St & Normanby St (-35.943839 173.866463) • Pahi – 680 Pahi Rd Paparoa (-36.157288 174.229310) • Kellys Bay Campground – Cnr Bay View Rd & Dale Rd (-36.248349 174.100317)

NOTE FOR DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS Between November and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement. This introduces fresh aggregate into the failure, in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers.

Council would like to thank you for your co-operation as work is undertaken across the district to improve our communities and infrastructure. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information

RENOVATION RESOLUTION Make the most of the season u by Andy Bryenton

The number one new year’s resolutions always involve three things, year after year. Diet, exercise — and finishing those DIY projects. Summer is the perfect time to undertake many of the tasks which would be impossible without clear weather, and despite a spot of rain recently there are still plenty of summer weeks ahead in which to get to work. The first thing which comes to mind is roofing. There’s literally no time like the present to get that old iron off and make sure that winter leaks simply don’t happen. When the roof is off it’s also the perfect time to fix up and top-up insulation, or install and repair ducted extractor fans, range hoods, heat transfer systems of ventilation units. With no need to crawl in the tight ceiling space, all these in-roof conveniences can be installed in a snap, saving time

and money. This is also the time of year when water supplies are a critical factor on the farm and on rural properties. Recent rain has provided a top-up, but many tanks will still run low before autumn arrives in full force. If your water source comes to the tank from your roof, it’s a good season to book in a tank clean. It’s no use waiting for the tank to run dry, as tank vac specialists need a small amount of water to work with to remove all the

debris which may have sluiced down from your gutters and pipes. Similarly, it’s the season to check those filtration systems — swap out your cartridges or add on ultraviolet ‘bug zapping’ technology when water sources run shallow and warm, promoting bacteria growth. Warm and dry summer conditions are also the prime time for laying concrete, for fencing, as the pad for a future construction, or to install a permanent driveway or path. A new year can also mean a great excuse to adopt a new style. It’s great

weather for painting, and the latest interior decor fashions for 2018 are in store now at local wallpaper, paint, curtain, blind and flooring specialists. A minimalist look is beginning to return, featuring bold single feature walls and moving away from the ‘distressed chic’ and baroque influences of the mid-2010s. Grab a catalogue, get some inspiration and finish those decorating tasks with style — another resolution ticked off the list before 2018 gets any older! ¢

Get mobile for the new year u by Andy Bryenton

When you’re young, fit and healthy, mobility isn’t just something you take for granted. It’s something, which in this screen-addicted age of Wi-Fi and Uber, is actually considered a chore. Walk to the shops? Bike to the park? The great indoors and a broadband connection make getting active seem positively prehistoric. But when you can’t get out when you want to — when age, injury or illness make the end of the driveway seem as remote as Nepal, and the trip to the shops seem like Scott’s quest to the Antarctic, a solution can become allconsuming. Anyone who has worn a cast knows how this feels — but it’s a daily reality for many of our senior citizens. Mobility scooters are a godsend for those who would otherwise experience discomfort, pain and difficulty enjoying the lifestyle they deserve. Many folks wait and put off buying such a device as they think they are only for the ‘very old’, or that they may be hard to operate. However the modern scooter is as far-removed from those old, heavy, short-ranged battery dinosaurs than the Model T is from the new Mustang. To find out just how far they’ve come, we talked to Mr Frank Ward of Dargaville, who was happy to demo his hot yellow AMW scooter — a 2017 edition bought from Godfrey Motors locally. Frank says that the new machine far outperforms his first scooter, which met an untimely end in an accident. The AMW is more stable, brightly coloured — for safety, as Frank explains — and has enough

power to make the round trip from his suburban home into the middle of town twice on a charge. “It’s replaced my car,” says the satisfied scooter owner, who values the ability to shop for his own groceries, visit friends and make appointments thanks to his newfound mobility. His only regret — “You can’t use it to tow the boat! I wish I could but my friends still help me get out on the water.” Frank was even generous enough to allow us to take his AMW for a test drive — and after a quick tutorial of the easy controls it was a simple matter to navigate around the block. Paving stones, ramps up and down kerbs and uneven surfaces seemed not to phase the scooter at all, though it’s slated top speed of 22km/h was far too quick for pedestrian ways! For those looking to get mobile, the time is now. Make it your new year’s

Showcasing new skills u by Ayla Miller

Fromagers will have the opportunity to showcase their skills at the 142nd Paparoa A&P Show this year with a new cheesemaking category on the programme. Judge Jas Futter says the entries will be marked on flavour, aroma, texture and presentation. “I’m looking forward to seeing who is out there making cheese. It’s a really good thing to know how to do and we want to promote it,” says Jas. Jas believes there are many benefits to making your own cheese. “It’s better quality, there’s the sense of achievement, there are no preservatives and it’s good for the soul. It’s a nice process.” Indoor category entries close at 11.45am on Friday, February 2 at the Paparoa War Memorial Hall. North Kaipara Agricultural Association president Kate Battensby says she’s looking forward to seeing everything come together on the day. “It’s a day where people from different all backgrounds can come together and see what’s out there.” Sir Alexander Lockwood Smith has also

put his hand up to judge the cattle at this year’s show. There will be sideshows, equestrian events, wood chopping, shearing, livestock categories. A large indoor section will boast a multitude of classes including cooking, sewing, knitting, handcrafts, vegetable, flower, photography, local school handwriting and art work, home brew and children’s work as well as many market stalls. There will also be a live band and plenty of activities for children and teenagers. There is free parking, facilities and a St John ambulance will be on site to make sure everyone is kept safe. The Paparoa Show is happening on Saturday, February 3 at the Paparoa Showgrounds. Gates open at 9am. Entry is $10 for adults and $5 for children with under 5s free. Live and local talent

A new direction

u by Ayla Miller

u by Ayla Miller

Grassroots music event Toka Fest will bring both local and international acts into the spotlight for the sixth year running.

After a long and successful career painting landscapes, artist and Mangawhai resident Wendy Leach decided she wanted to change direction, and is holding an exhibition of her new work for the first time in New Zealand this February.

p There will be something for everyone at this years Toka Fest

Organiser Olly Knox says the event is a community inspired celebration of music and arts and there will be something for everyone. “We have music from all around the region and it provides a great opportunity for local artists to perform in front of our community.” Performers will range from folk, indie, rock, and alternative, through to hip hop, electronic, kapa haka and circus. “There is always high quality music and this year we are lucky to have Australian band Ungus Ungus Ungus.” Well-known local reggae artist Ben Ratima is also featuring in the line

up. It will be his first time performing at this event. “We were very happy to receive funding from Creative Communities this year so we would like to acknowledge them from the council. It’s going to really deliver a quality event and to support the artists for their hard work,” Olly says. There are camping spots with taps and long-drops available nearby. There will be no courtesy van running this year and Olly encourages people to organise designated drivers. Toka Fest will be held at the Tokatoka Tavern on Saturday, February 17 from noon to 11pm. Entry is $5. ¢

Wendy has had 20 solo exhibitions and lived in Europe for six years with her partner Colin. The couple moved back to New Zealand three years ago and Wendy now has a studio in Mangawhai. Her art is an ongoing enquiry into the concept of mark-making as a mode of expression. “I’ve totally changed my direction. Rather than looking at subject matter and painting realistically I’m now looking at the ideas around the art and painting from my intuition.” Wendy says after painting landscapes for a long time she felt it was time for a change. At this time she went back to university and completed a master’s degree. “It’s quite a hard thing for an artist to change direction especially if you’re working in a direction that’s successful. I did a master’s degree with the idea to change my direction entirely. I went into that not knowing what I was going to come out like at the other end, but knowing I wanted to be different. “It’s been a really significant change for me. I used to paint what I could see but now I paint from a point of feeling. I’ve become very interested in what the marks express and the interaction

p Wendy Leach with some of her work, which demonstrates the new direction her art has taken

between the lines. I am excited about this exhibition because it is the first time I have shown this work and I’m interested to see people’s response.” Her exhibition Wendy Leach: New Work will open in Auckland on February 15 at Arthaus Orakei and run until March 4. ¢

The power to handle uneven terrain u by Andy Bryenton

Ride-on lawn tractor-style mowers are a popular choice across the region, especially with those who have a more than an average sized yard to deal with. There’s been a steady and increasing demand for something a bit out of the ordinary coming through, as lifestyle block owners and farmers from the heartland of the Kaipara seek to tackle steep, rough or uneven terrain. Local ride-on mower expert Trevor from Godfrey’s Mowers and Chainsaws has seen all types of machines over his years in business, and progress has turned what was once a humble replacement for the push mower into a sophisticated tool for taming the outdoors. However he’s noted that there’s a big difference between what’s needed in town, or on the relatively flat lands of the Northern Wairoa delta, and what’s required for the hilly, rolling terrain further east. Serving this wide area has meant having to go back to the catalogues and suppliers for some specialized solutions, but where there’s a need, there’s a will and hence a way. It’s from this need that Cub Cadet’s new XT2 LX42 EFI comes. The name’s a bit of a mouthful, and that’s not the only thing it has in common with a 1990s rally car. That’s because the new Cub on the block has switched up to electronic fuel injection for more power,

and incorporates a clever differential locking system to ensure that the power produced by its 679cc V-twin gets to where it’s going. A flat, fuel injected twin cylinder layout also gives the LX42 a low centre of gravity, with its weight distributed evenly across the turf on wide, grippy tyres. It may not be four wheel drive like a quad bike, but it can handle terrain where other lawn mowers fear to tread. Of course, wherever it goes it carries a wide 42 inch cutting deck to deal with lawns in one pass. Fuel injection has provided a boost in fuel efficiency, power and performance to automobiles for decades — and we’d never go back to the old days of carburetors without a fight. Now this technology is coming to lawn care, and the XT2 LX42 EFI is the flagship model for the change. A demonstration model is in store now at Godfrey’s in Dargaville — ask for a closer look. ¢

The sharp end of the arrow u by Andy Bryenton

If progress is an arrow moving forward, then the collaboration between the best minds in Germany and South Korea, which has rolled onto Kiwi roads as the Kia Stinger is the sharp end of it. This car generates arguments from the deliberately pointed — is it faster than a big Aussie-built V8, for instance — to the abstract, with people musing over the global nature of the partnership that created it. Since the Stinger broke cover as a concept car it has gone from a design exercise, which caused ripples of consternation to a finished product, which has the best of Europe and America shivering in their boots. Yes, it can mix it up with the big displacement warriors downunder and win. Putting aside the over 360 horsepower generated by the Stinger’s turbo-fed v6, and putting aside the fact that yes, it really is a contender with Mustangs and M cars, there’s something else about the Kia Stinger which has to be addressed. The elephant in the room is how it looks. Because the photographs don’t do it justice. Not to the outside, which is willfully, joyfully happy to advertise its turn of speed by looking like a speed violation while standing still. And not to the cockpit, with its lack of carbonfibre gimmicks, faux wood panelling, or cheap and scratchy plastics in favour of stitched leather, brushed aluminium and retro-futuristic controls. Many modern cars come from a prototype that hits the auto shows as exuberant as a 1970s American muscle car — all wide arches, sinister vents and rakish menace. Then

AIR CON CAN’T BEAT THE HEAT?

p A masterpiece car for two of the world’s top engineers and designers, Kia’s new Stinger has everyone talking

the beige men in beige cardigans decide it would be cheaper if it looked like a bag of tapioca with 14 inch alloys. Not so the new Kia. From the outside it’s as striking as Ford’s Mustang, and currently rare enough to turn heads with chiropractical force. There’s a bit of the M series BMWs crafted by Stinger co-creator Albert Biermann in there, but there are hints of Aston and Jaguar and other real, old-school grand tourers as well. From the inside, low and snug in wrap-around seats, the stubby shifter and elegant silver switchgear sit

amid a landscape of black on black. There’s room in the back seats for real people too. You may think that none of this matters, when the raw figures on paper put the Stinger well ahead of its price bracket competitors. But I rather think that looking the part is most of the point. In a sea of resale value silver Europeans at twice the price, Kia’s latest is pure rock and roll, and that’s exactly what Kiwis starved of a performance four-door from the big two are looking for. ¢

We’ll make your ride cool again. All makes, all models, re-gassing and repairs at a reasonable price!

Historic collection under the hammer u by Andy Bryenton

In a series of large farm sheds just outside of Dargaville a remarkable collection of historic machinery awaits the auctioneer’s call. From the massive dragline excavator, which helped drain the kumara fields of the west Kaipara through to New Zealand’s first power shovel, to a selection of tractors charting the rise of powered farming — it’s all here, patinated by time but in most cases ready to roar into life with a little fuel and ingenuity. The collection represents only part of a lifelong labour, the work of dedicated technological history expert, restorer and all round hard-working man Peter MacKenzie. Growing up on a working farm, Peter suffered from polio as a young man, making it difficult for him to work with horses or by human muscle alone. In this respect, an illness in his early years had the same effect as it would have on racing legend Bruce McLaren — it gave him a fascination with machines, and made him determined to achieve his goals. While Bruce went on to pursue speed, Peter was all about practicality and power. His collection of tracked vehicles, massive diesels and steel-wheeled early tractors grew until it became an open museum in its own right — Iron Park in Helensville. Busloads of guests would visit, sharing memories of seeing such engines at work in days gone by. Peter was a problem solver who turned his hand to engineering, repairs and smithing to keep his collection working, and this remained the way through a downsizing of his collection, a move

Expressions of interest have flooded in for many of the unique pieces — machines now one of a kind or so rare that they are

irreplaceable. It’s a huge legacy to move on to new homes, but the team from Alastair Beer Auctions are on site cataloguing the collection. KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

Classic chrome and automotive art

u by the Curator, Packard Motor Museum

Cars, cars, cars and yes — say the word ‘motorcycle’ sixty five times! That’s what you’ll find in the extensive collection at the Packard Motor Museum. Four large buildings set on five acres — you can display a lot of vehicles in such a place. Collecting the perfect selection to showcase the history of internal combustion was the next task. That’s what the late Graeme Craw, founder of the Packard Motor Museum did. Graeme started the collection on his farm at Anawhata, West Auckland and as it grew he shifted it to the Old Montana Winery. Changing circumstances meant another shift and the perfect place became available, part

of the Old Northern Co-operative Dairy factory at Maungatapere. The titles Graeme purchased contained a large storage shed, approximately the size of a football field. Graeme’s wife Moira stood in the empty shed and said ‘It will take him years to fill this,’ but six months

later — you guessed it — the shed was full. Graeme was keen on the history of the Industrial Revolution and how the machinery from this time changed the world. The mission of the museum is to exhibit the changes from this period and over the 20th century. The Packard cars are displayed in such a way to show developments, from the wooden spoked wheels of the early cars, through to the V-eight motors and aero wings of the 1950s vehicles. Today the collection consists of 60 Packards, as well as other American and English cars, motorcycles, trucks and military vehicles, steam engines and earthmoving machinery. Visitors are taken through the museum with a tour-guide.

p the golden era of motoring is reflected in the Packard Motor Museum’s collection

That way we can tell you our stories and you can share yours. We don’t forget the ladies of this classic era! Our collections include sewing machines, typewriters (remember those things?), a great collection of telephones and some early medical equipment, including a cureyour-headache with a self-administered electric shock machine. This year we’ll be running startup tours. The first one is on Saturday 3rd of March, at 10.30am when a selection of vehicles will be started up by Fenton Craw, the founder’s son; a great opportunity to hear the different engines and ask those interesting questions. ¢
