Rescue boat for Tinopai

Relief could be on the way for Mangawhai residents struggling with low water supplies due to lack of rain and high demand.
Graham Sibery, Kaipara District Council chief executive
A dedicated rescue boat is set for Tinopai once necessary qualifications are complete
Training has been ongoing since last year near Kawau Island. However it was decided that to be properly prepared and trained for the Kaipara Harbour further instructing was required in the area coast guards would be patrolling. “We need to train in our own harbour because it is our own environment and the Kaipara is entirely different to the east coast,” says Mr Smith. “Kaipara Harbour is expansive when the tide is in, but when the tide is out it has only half the size which makes our rescues unique. It is a completely different beast
because of the nature of the harbour and the mudflats.” Mr Smith says the Coast Guard volunteers would not be able to reach the same level of training anywhere else and this will be the first time a boat will be based at Tinopai. The only other rescue boat for the Kaipara Harbour is based at Helensville. The boat was delivered before Christmas and an instructor travels to Tinopai to conduct the training sessions. The North Kaipara Coast Guard members hail from Poutu, Te Kopuru, Baylys Beach, Dargaville, Ruawai and Pahi.
The Kaipara District Council have announced that support has been arranged with the assistance of Fonterra and Whangarei District Council. Water is being transported from the WDC Ruakaka facility by Fonterra tankers to Mangawhai for local water contractors to meet residential demand. “By supplementing the availability of local bulk water in Mangawhai, more deliveries can be made per day, as the local trucks will not need to travel to Wellsford or Snells Beach for supplies,” said KDC chief executive Graham Sibery. “Hopefully this will help more homes in Mangawhai obtain water deliveries as soon as possible.”
The first delivery of bulk water was made at noon on Friday, January 20. “The cooperation from Fonterra in redeploying a tanker and WDC for permitting access to the Ruakaka water supplies has made this possible and is greatly appreciated,” said Mr Sibery. Normal arrangements for delivery to residents continue to apply, and residents should contact their usual suppliers.

Water safety education Contest attracts crowds by Ayla Miller
by Ayla Miller
The Kauri Coast Community Pool is offering free entry for one week to help promote water safety this summer.
A crowd of keen anglers and families took part in the annual Tinopai Fishing Contest raising around $11,000–12,000 for the students of Tinopai School.
From left: Kauri Coast Community Pool aquatic coordinator Daniel Fulop, lifeguard Ethan Sherwood and aquatic coordinator Joseph Misileki are ready for the pool’s Community Water Safety week
Customer service coordinator Dayna Talaese says this is the first time the pool have held a free week and says with water related accident figures on the rise now is a good time to educate people about water safety. “There are a lot of drownings and accidents happening so we thought why not. We have the pool here, it’s summer, let’s open it up for the week. Everyone can come and have a swim and at the same time we can run a few water safety events,” said Dayna. Activities will include events such as ‘Be a Lifeguard’ sessions, water safety lessons, aqua aerobics, as well as a session offering open water swimming tips specifically aimed at
those competing in the Kai Iwi Lakes Triathlon and Bay of Islands Classic. Dayna encourages everyone to come along and make the most of the opportunity. “It’s a good chance to have some family time before the kids go back to school. “With these sessions running, why not learn something about safety in and around the water, and make sure you and your family are safe over summer.” The free entry week will begin on January 23–29 and there are limited spaces for the water safety sessions so bookings are essential. Call 09 439 1065 or contact the pool via their Facebook page.

Tinopai School principal Sonya Kaihe estimated around 400–500 people attended the contest and the accompanying fair on the school grounds. “It was one of the best days we have had in a long time. We had entertainment and carnival rides, and people were so generous with their donations. “We had lots of fun and the hangi was beautiful. There were a lot of sharks out in the harbour, people were saying. Everybody donated their fish back as well, so we had a great fish auction afterwards. “It has become a really family oriented day for everyone.” Sonya says

‘Tis the season to recycle
KAIPARA LIFESTYLER JANUARY 24 - 2017
by Joanna Manson
With the district packed with holidaymakers, summer recycling is proving to be a busy season for Kaipara Refuse. Since the closure of recycling at Little River Transport, the Dargaville Refuse Station has had to re-organise to meet the volume of recycling demands . Managing director at Kaipara Refuse, Rob Battcher, said it had been a busy summer so far with a noticeable increase of traffic and it was important for the public to acknowledge what can and can’t be recycled and to rinse recyclables thoroughly. “Please make sure recyclable goods are clean and remember if it isn’t, it is rubbish. He also wants the public to be mindful of their staff. “Most people are polite and helpful with recycling but we do get the odd difficult person once they find out they can’t recycle a particular item,” he said. Kaipara Refuse only recycles plastic items like soft drink and water bottles, milk bottles and ice cream containers.
Plastics such as takeaway containers, packaging plastics, and plastic glassware are treated as rubbish. However Mr Battcher says the recyclable categories could change at any time and Kaipara Refuse will be the first to let residents know if that does happen. He said there had also been confusion over glass recycling in the past and wanted to remind the public that it only included bottles and jars. “We can’t recycle mirrors, window glass and homeware glasses,” he said. Greenwaste can still be taken to the refuse station for a small fee.
With all this hot weather around it has shaken up a few young birds, as the lack of fresh water and too much hot sun is not quite what they wanted. It is interesting how many of our visitors are keen to see what bundles of fluff we have for them to look at. Of the two baby moreporks that that we rescued just before Christmas, one died two days later and the other is going very well in the cage outside.
LeeAnn Kerr is happy to assist members of the public with recycling at the Dargaville Transfer Station
A different side of the lakes by Ayla Miller
If you have ever wondered what goes on underwater after dark you could have your questions answered during a guided night tour as part of the annual Kai Iwi Lakes open day held at Lake Waikare. Event coordinator Kim Jones says this is a good opportunity for people to see another side to marine life. “Quite often you get a different look at what is living in the waterways at night time. There are quite a few freshwater crayfish and they are usually more active at night,” she says. A selection of community organisations will also have a presence during the day and there will be a range of activities for everyone. “We really want to show people the great things they can do at the lakes and at the same time be aware of what is special about them and how you can minimise your impact on the water quality and the biodiversity in and

around the lakes,” says Kim. The day is also promoting World Wetlands Day which is February 2. This year’s theme is wetlands for disaster risk reduction. “As these lakes are a world class example of a dune lakes system it is a good opportunity to promote that message.” The event will be held at Lake Waikare on Saturday, From left: Tearoha Phillips, Chance Ratima-Phillips, Giavanna Pumipi-Hawkings, Syrenity Hawkings and Jarmane Hawkings January 28 and will go from get ready to see what is below the lakes surface 10.30am–3.30pm. Over Christmas we received another baby morepork about 10 days-old. It would have been cast out of the nest as it has a slightly crossed beak and the adults know there is something wrong. Not being about to help, they abandon them which is common with many wild birds. This little fat ball of fluff is doing very well and we should be able to just about fix his beak by the time he is big enough to release. Visitors just love him when we bring him out and show them how we feed him. Even some German visitors wanted to take him home! We are also hand rearing a baby pukeko which was saved by a lady who noticed something moving beside the adult pukeko that had been run over and killed on the road. We have a dish of corn so visitors can feed the baby and they love him. Not to be outdone, Morris our pet myna continues to greet visitors by calling out “come on, come on” or asks “do you want to go to bed”, followed by “who’s a cheeky boy”. Our two Tui’s talk as well. The Northland green gecko that had its four feet badly burnt in a fire at Pouto is not on show but is making very good progress and has started eating on her own. Water Restrictions Are Now in Force Due to low rain fall across the Dargaville area since the start of summer and a heavy demand on water resources, there is a ban effective immediately for all those connected to the Dargaville and Baylys beach public water supply for the following purposes: • All hosepipe use • All irrigation and sprinkler use The ban is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. Water restrictions are a necessary precaution to delay the need for more stringent restrictions so we need to conserve water now to avoid shortages over the next couple of months. The Kaipara District Council urges all residents to conserve water to ensure that water supplies for essential household purposed can be maintained. Council is also asking rural households not connected to water supplies to conserve water, because the bulk water suppliers who top up their water tanks depend on the Council’s community supplies for their water. This Notice is issued pursuant to clause 1609 of the Kaipara District Council General Bylaw. Anyone who breaches the water restrictions may be liable to a fine of $500. New chapter for printer
Knitting group expands
by Ayla Miller
by Anna Harding
Trevor Hunter has been the face behind most of the Northern Wairoa’s printing for the last 52 years and is now swapping the printing press for a fishing rod as he heads into retirement.
Gowns for premature babies, medical play dolls and clothing for children and families are some of the things being made by the Kaiwaka based Whangarei Hospital knitting group.
Trevor Hunter is retiring after 52 years working as a printer
Trevor began his hand-typography apprenticeship with the Northland Times, which was the daily newspaper and print service, when he left school in 1964 and has seen many changes in the industry over the years. The 1980s brought with them particular changes when the letterpress was replaced with offset printing which meant using plates instead of hot metal. Now with the move toward digital printing Trevor has decided it is time to retire, but says he feels lucky to have had a career which has seen him out until retirement age. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. My father knew the Northland Times owner at the time and asked if there were any jobs going for me. I never thought I would end up doing this,” he said. After changing hands and buildings several times, the Northland Times eventually closed down in 1999 and Mr
Hunter went on to work for Dargaville Print until 2007. In 2008 he shifted to the current workshop on the corner of Kapia and Totara Street, and helped to set up AD Focus Press with Anthony and Debra van Leeuwerden who own and operate AD Focus digital printing on the same site. “I’m grateful to Debra and Anthony for giving me the opportunity to finish my time with them and their business,” he said. Trevor says he has enjoyed getting to know his regular customers as well, and thanked them for staying with him right through his career. Now at the age of 69 he is looking forward to seeing some more of New Zealand, doing some hunting and fishing, and keeping fit. From the New Year onwards all printing requirements can be taken care of with Anthony Debra and the team at AD Focus.

The jamboree experience Kenpo kicks off The New Year has brought growth across all areas in Northland Kenpo including three foundation-year students of the specialist self-defence school upgrading in rank.

Kaiwaka, Mangawhai and Dargaville scouts participated in the 21st NZ Scout Jamboree in Blenheim
“Our Nor thern Nightmares’ contingent enjoyed a wide variety of activities,” said Kaiwaka leader Bruce Ferguson. “First-time experiences featured a helicopter ride, shotgun target shooting, archery, paddle boarding, rockwall climbing and abseiling.” The five challenge-filled activity pods included a visit to Sir Peter Jackson’s Knights of the Sky exhibition at Omaka, a vintage car museum, water events at Ngakuta Bay, the Blenheim train tour, and overnight bush survival camping.
“The opening and closing ceremonies were special events and badge swapping added to the experiences, along with learning life skills such as patrol team building, cooking, doing laundry and grocery shopping. “Jamboree was an awesome experience. The Scouts did us proud and have done things that will be with them for life, and they have grown so much in confidence. We could never have got there without the community behind us supporting our huge fundraising effort — thank you all.”
Kaipara based William Paki, Gail Mason and Shane Joyce became senior instructors as Third Degree Black Belts and they were presented with degree documents signed by senior American Kenpo Karate exponents. Grand master Tatum’s area representative Ron Mason expressed his pride in their efforts. “They are all able to adapt equally to giving or receiving instruction and have an interest in the martial arts far exceeding those who just seek an ‘I’ve got the T-shirt’ type of experience or a bucket list involvement, with a shallow interest in the subject,” Ron said. “The interested train when it’s convenient and the dedicated also train when it isn’t.

“These three definitely qualify as dedicated. “The system of Kenpo we follow, under the leadership of grand master Larry Tatum in California, places great emphasis on the ability of senior students to teach with the result that students quickly realise that to teach is to learn, or as master Tatum says ‘if you want a private class, go teach someone’.” Ron says having instructor credibility and competence is very important in the overall journey to promote this system of self defence, self improvement, awareness and confidence. This system is taught in 29 countries around the world and the journey to become a qualified instructor takes at least 10 years.

Walking for arthritis
Horses on holiday
by Ann Morgan
Kauri Coast TOP 10 Holiday Park has opened what could be New Zealand’s first equestrian centre at a holiday park.
Daniel Powell of Wellsford has known Kazushi Noiri for many years and when the opportunity came to walk from Wellsford to Kaiwaka with him as part of his Arthritis fundraising walk from Bluff to Cape Reinga fourteen-year-old Daniel didn’t hesitate. Kazushi worked in aged care looking after an elderly lady with arthritis. The disease made her very unwell and Kazushi decided as a way to give back to the community he would support the Arthritis Foundation and trained for a year to prepare for the walk. “He had come all this way and Daniel thought it would be great to walk part of the way with him,” says Daniel’s mother Thereasa. It took the pair five hours to reach Kaiwaka where Daniel sent his friend on the rest of his journey. “I thought it would be fun and it hasn’t been an easy journey for him. In Pukekohe Daniel Powell of Wellsford joined Kazushi Noiri on part of his walk from Bluff to Cape Reinga Kaz slept under a tree and he has had a few challenging incidents,” we met a lady with arthritis in her says Daniel. knees and another had it in her fingers “We walked against the traffic with and she couldn’t move them much our high visibility vests on, and found — it made me realise the disease is quite a few things like a Ferrari logo quite real. badge. It is amazing how much rubbish “Kaz was on day 57 of the journey you don’t see on the road from your car.” and had reached his goal of raising Daniel thought he would be sore $5,000. He finished the walk in 66 before he reached Te Hana as he hadn’t days, walking about 40–50 kilometres trained like Kaz had. “I started to feel a day. I only did 20 and that was sore as we got to Kaiwaka. On the way far enough.”
Jane McComb, TOP 10 Holiday Park owner, sisters Auni and Zeia from the USA, pony Xena and riding instructor Jamieson Parker
The centre includes a riding arena, paddocks and yards, offering riding, tuition and stables. Owners Chris and Jane McComb purchased the park three years ago and have been making it their own — recently winning the Top Service Award in the TOP 10 Holiday Parks’ annual awards. The centre is aimed at horse riders and caters for riding holidays where people can bring their own horses. Horse riding lessons suitable for beginners are also available on the park’s resident four horses. “Our guests are loving the experience and I know the horses did too. It’s great for guests to be able to combine a holiday with this sort of activity as well — they can ride as much or as little as they want.”
The idea came about when Chris and Jane saw an opportunity to offer their guests something different. They set about transforming their premises and setting up a suitable facility for those guests who want to bring their own horses. Jane herself is a keen equestrienne and has an international coaching certificate as a riding instructor. She says she has been around horses her whole life and is excited to offer this unique experience to her guests. “Pets are part of the family and more and more people travel with their animals; horses should be no different,” Jane says. “Guests can enjoy some beautiful farm rides or take advantage of our arena, jumps and professional tuition.”

LIFELONG LEARNING Opportunity knocks close to home by Andy Bryenton
Youth unemployment is a hot topic in the halls of power, where our elected representatives debate the best way to ensure a productive future for the next generation. But here in the Kaipara, local businesses and training institutes are rolling up their sleeves and turning talk into action, often side by side. In engineering workshops such as Dargaville’s Newman Engineering and Farrand and Mason, up-and-coming apprentices get to grips with the business of heavy metal from both ends of the education spectrum. You’ll find some coming up through the ranks in the tried and tested manner, putting in hours under the tutelage of respected local engineers. You’ll also find at least one trainee augmenting his university studies with hours on the tools — 400 this summer alone to be precise. It’s all part of fostering new talent and providing a service to the community. It’s the same in the building trade, where 50,000 new tradies are needed in the next few years. That’s a whole Whangarei full of apprentices in roofing, flooring, construction and carpentry. But, as local builders, roofers and flooring professionals will tell you, training doesn’t end with a certificate and a handshake. It’s ongoing, as the technology and trends underpinning the industry change. That’s a big reason why apprenticeships — through our electricians, plumbers, mechanics and more — are vital to the livelihood of our

A&P or ‘agricultural and pastoral’ shows have their roots in Scotland with the first one in 1822. The first show in New Zealand was held at the Bay of Islands in 1842 and today, these iconic Kiwi days are still deep in their rural roots. Although the agricultural sector in New Zealand has changed significantly over the years, Kaipara A&P shows have worked hard to stay relevant. Nevertheless the traditional attractions like equestrian events, pedigree cattle, wood chopping and shearing continue to be very important at both shows — the Paparoa show and the Northern Wairoa show. For more than 100 years, A&P shows have provided everyone with an experience of rural life. The usually hot and sunny days are filled with family fun, and with January almost over these events are just around the corner. The first show kicking off in the Kaipara this year is the Paparoa show, on Saturday, February 4. This will mark its 141st year. There will be all the traditional events and more, like dairy goats, team roping and bull-riding. There’ll also be market stalls and trade sites which offer a great range of interesting things to view and buy,
