 One of a huge influx of visitors to Kaipara this summer is Anais Joye, 29, from Normandy in France, who had her first-ever beach ride while staying in her campervan at Baylys Beach. “I’II have been here in Dargaville for two months and meeting people from around the world and learning some circus tricks thanks to the Kumarani Circus community. I used to ride horses in my country but I have never had the opportunity to ride on the beach. My dream is coming true at Baylys Beach!” she told photographer Ken Cashin.

Nebraska An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a milliondollar Mega-Sweepstakes Marketing prize. Will this voyage prove to be a chance at redemption, or the last gasp for a failed relationship? August: Osage County A look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Featuring the talents of Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep in an all-star cast. Last Vegas In the comic tradition of The Bucket List, this bachelor comedy with a twist features the talents of Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas as an ‘over the hill’ brat pack set to party like it’s 1959 on the infamous and exciting Strip. The Railway Man Mistakenly branded a spy during WW2, Eric Lomax (Colin Firth) was subjected to imprisonment and torture at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Army. Years later, in a bid to let go of a lifetime of hatred and anger, he travels back to the scene of his imprisonment to confront his captor, accompanied by his best friend. The Wolf of Wall Street The powerful combination of Scorsese and DiCaprio does it again, bringing the hedonistic, cruel and crooked world of 1980s Wall Street to vivid life. Witness the excess and the greed which fuelled an economic collapse, tinged with bizarre humor and real insight.

 Kaipara residents wanting to find out more about study and training opportunities were able to find out what NorthTec is offering. Among them was Jodie McKenzie from Dargaville, who along with daughter Mikayla (8) was looking at opportunities in sports and recreation. Ms McKenzie, a teacher aide at Dargaville Primary, says her likely courses will be taught at Whangarei. “But if there are enough people NorthTec will provide help with travel.” NorthTec teaches carpentry and painting courses at their Dargaville campus. They start on February 18.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 Frenetic animated comedy following the exploits of an optimistic young inventor and his plans to feed the world. In this second instalment his magical machine goes haywire, producing living (and sometimes dangerous) culinary madness. Philomena With the outstanding talents of British actors Steve Coogan and Judi Dench, this extremely popular movie follows a jaded political journalist’s quest to help re-unite a mother and son long separated. Powerhouse performances define a touching story of redemption and family.

 When More FM Northland put the call out asking where they should visit this summer, they got a resounding invitation from Dargaville and a special invite from the Kumara Box. Promotions staff, Ellie Ball, Gemma Aspden and Carrolle Baddeley, enjoyed a ride on Ernie’s Kumara Train during their tour.

Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit — Blockbuster spy action from the pen of Tom Clancy, starring Star Trek’s Chris Pine as super-agent Ryan. Directed by the great Kenneth Branagh, this tense thriller follows a plot to bring down the US and the desperate fight to stop economic armageddon. Students and staff at the Tinopai primary school are scouring the motor vehicles for sale columns after they raised exactly $11,000 in their annual Kaipara fishing contest which attracted more than 500 people to the harbourside weigh-in and prizegiving. “The result is just fantastic,” says school principal, Sonya Kaihe who had counted up to $10,968, when the total was made up to a round figure by the Lifestyler.. “The money will be going into a van, to take our pupils to sports and other activities, rather than have to rely on parents volunteering their cars as in the past.” Ms Kaihe says she hopes to have a school netball team off to Saturday competition around the district, as well

as getting senior pupils to and from technical classes held in Ruawai. “It is a really great outcome and all due to the huge support from parents, former pupils, and really, the community generally who might have no actual links to the school. The sponsors excelled themselves with the prizes on offer.” Ms Kaihe also addressed community concerns over increasingly stringent licencing rules being a threat to future Tinopai fishing contests. “The Commission anticipates it will also receive submissions from local authorities once they have finished their own consultation processes. We will release a further update once the deadline passes and there has been an opportunity to analyse the submissions. Public hearings will be scheduled for those who want to speak to their submissions.” Mr Riezebos adds that the option of local boards, with even greater powers to represent their communities, is also

a possibility for Northland, depending on the passage of legislation currently before Parliament. The draft proposal is on the Commission’s website www.lgc.govt.nz. It contains guidelines for how to make a submission. They can be emailed to info@lgc. govt.nz or posted to: Local Government Commission, PO Box 5362, Wellington 6145. St Joseph’s principal Rotarians honour looks forward to challenge scholarship winners  by Colin Patterson

After more than 30 years as a teacher, Richard Truter has his first job outside the state system. He has been appointed as principal of Dargaville’s St Joseph’s School. He comes to St Joseph’s after 11 years at Te Kopuru School, serving as either deputy or assistant principal. “It’s a big change. I’ve always taught in the state system. But I was raised as a catholic and I’ve always been a catholic.” St Joseph’s has been through troubled times in recent years, with its board of trustees being replaced by a commissioner. However, Mr Truter says a new board chaired by local lawyer Amanda Matich has been elected and has taken office. “There are new challenges for me and the  New St Joseph’s principal Richard Truter is looking forward to the challenge of leading his school board. They welcomed Graeson Kermode, the 2014 President’s Scholarship winner, plus Kathleen Sircombe, who was last year’s scholarship recipient. Graeson has just finished a year as Dargaville High School’s Head Girl and is heading to Wellington to study Marketing and Media Studies. Eventually she hopes to move towards Law. Kathleen has just finished her first year studying Health Science at Otago University where she says the $1500 scholarship ‘eased the financial burden’ for her. She says it is a wide

ranging course and very competitive as there are more graduates than jobs. But she got stuck in, becoming a bit of a ‘hermit’ and got good grades. However, a bout of glandular fever put paid to her aspirations, at least temporally. She plans to finish a Genetics degree, which she says will offer a number of future options. Kathleen says she has grown both permanently and academically at university and thanked the rotary club and youth director Neil Clements for our support, including earlier science schools. 

Gifts for all in Ruawai  by Joanne Speechly

A little sparkle will be added to the streets of Ruawai come February, with a new shop opening its doors. Fairy’s and Things is a gift shop with a fairy theme but when the doors open, people will be pleasantly surprised with the many other goodies on offer too. Owner Trevor Harris decided to open a gift shop late last year and decided to introduce the fairy theme after visiting the North Canterbury village of Cust, in the South Island. “Cust is a town about the size of Ruawai and they have a shop there called Away with the Fairies, which is getting business from as far away as Dunedin, Nelson and Christchurch. So we’re hoping to do the same thing here and attract people from Whangarei, Wellsford, the whole of Northland, as well as locally.

“We are also going to stock some products that aren’t currently available here such as Crocs footwear, Nature’s Buzz honey from Te Kopuru, Rawleigh’s Healthcare products, Living candles, Lavish soaps from Oamaru, local art and jewellery, fudge from the Fudge Farm, olive oils and preserves.” Trevor and his partner, Heather Logue, used to own Ruawai Farm Supplies, which was sold to RD1 in 2012. Heather still owns the RD1 building and the block of shops where Fairy’s and Things is located.

“We had an empty shop and wanted to put something in here but we didn’t want to conflict with any other businesses in town, so we decided on a gift shop. Heather Clark will manage the shop and she brings with her a great deal of experience.” Heather used to manage

Sounds Interesting in Havelock, which held the honour of being the smallest department store in the world. Fairy’s and Things opens on February 3 and will be open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and on Saturday from 9am to 12pm. 

Angela Flintoff and Matthew Addy took over the business in mid-December and are looking forward to a new challenge. The couple were studying hairdressing in Auckland before moving to Ruawai a year ago. They assumed they would stay a short time and then head back to the big smoke but buying their own business has changed their outlook. “I’ve always wanted to buy a business and my family had been looking into buying the cafe, so we just decided to do it,” says Angela. “We’ve changed the decor and the menu and extended the hours. At the moment we’re open 9am to 4pm, seven days but may look at opening earlier depending on demand. We’ve been really busy recently, with a lot of travellers passing through. “It is a really good feeling to have something that we own and can be proud of and it is also a creative outlet for me.” Angela is a keen cook who draws her inspiration from her favourite Auckland restaurants, food television, magazines and from talking to people about what

they like. Her sister, Moselle Brown, also works in the cafe and does a lot of the baking. Popular new menu items include prawn salad with chilli mayo, apricot and cream cheese paninis and the peri peri chicken burger. Outside of work, Angela and Matt say they are a musical family and Ruawai Community Church is a big part of their life. 

New butcher makes mark in Ruawai Last year, Scott Thirkell got a hard message. Wife Sasha was having another baby. “I was told I had to find a job.” At the time they were living in Kerikeri and Scott was doing home kill. But a baby on the way put pressure on the family budget and the call for a more regular income could not be ignored. “I started looking for jobs and applying for them,” says Scott. “But every time I applied I was competing with 200 others.” He was browsing on the Internet one day and he saw a butchery in Ruawai

for sale. Intrigued, he rang up and found out more. Then after two visits Scott became the proud owner of the Long Flat Bacon Company. Scott’s emphasis is on returning the shop back to basics. “I’m turning it back into a proper butchery. The previous owner concentrated on bacon. But this meant other opportunities were missed.” So whatever your needs — whether they be for lamb, pork or beef, and whatever the cut, Scott

Helping first home buyers get started Jill Wilson, of Dargaville’s long-established property professionals Dargaville Realty First National, says that this may be the perfect time for first home buyers to step onto the property ladder. With many excellent first homes now available throughout the region, there are schemes and subsidies in place to make the step-change from renting to owning your own property easier, with all the advantages this brings. One important subsidy to be aware of is the First Home Buyer Deposit Subsidy, a function of the much-publicised Kiwisaver programme. KiwiSaver members may be eligible for a first home purchase subsidy of up to $5,000 after three years of contributing to

KiwiSaver at the minimum contribution rate. This means that if you have been working (and contributing from your pay at the approved rate) since 2008, you may have more money to put toward a deposit than you have anticipated. If a Kiwisaver customer qualifies, they may receive $1,000 for each year they’ve been contributing, up to a maximum of $5,000. Couples qualify individually, so together they could be eligible for a subsidy of up to $10,000. This subsidy is available

Ali Osman purchased a lifestyle property just outside of Dargaville in 2006 and for the last eight years has enjoyed spending his weekends in a small town — away from the hustle and bustle of Auckland. In December, he and partner, Melang Tan, opened one of Dargaville’s newest businesses, Victoria Fruit and Vege. Ali owned and operated a panel beating and car grooming business on Auckland’s North Shore for ‘many, many years’ but in March last year he decided to sell up and make the permanent move to Dargaville. “After selling my business and having a couple of month’s rest, I started thinking about what I could do next. There was this empty shop in Dargaville, so we decided to try running a grocery store.” Alongside the fresh produce at Victoria Fruit and Vege, shoppers will find a variety of imported grocery items, including several types of noodles, microwave curries, Asian sauces and Indian spices. “There is quite a multi-cultural population here, including a lot of Asian people, who tell me that they travel to Whangarei and Auckland for their groceries. If I stock those products here, people can buy them locally and save time. I’ve had good feedback so far. “This is a nice change and less stressful than

In early February a long awaited event on the Kaipara calendar will arrive when the Northern Wairoa A and P Society hosts the Arapohue Show.

TokaFest 2014 is set to rock the small settlement of Toka Toka on Saturday, February 14 with a local lineup of entertainment for young and old. The inaugural TokaFest of 2013 attracted a strong turnout and positive feedback and organiser, Olly Knox, is keen to make it an annual event.

It’s an event with a long history, says show manager Nicky Poyner. “We’ve been running it for 123 years.” This year’s event will feature cattle and horses, shearing demonstrations with live commentary, and farmyard animals. Mrs Poyner says there will also be a range of indoor activities and exhibits, while the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club will be displaying some their prized exhibits. Mrs Poyner says the event attracts visitors from all over the

Kaipara and she is hoping to better the 1500 who attended last year’s show. This year’s Arapohue Show takes place on Saturday February 8, beginning at 9am at the showgrounds, 3338 Mititai Rd, Arapohue. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $2 for children aged six to 15, and free for under-fives. Mrs Poyner says the venue will be well sign-posted and has plenty of free parking. 

Although unable to help him in his enquiries, I responded that for a theft of this size to have taken place, it would have to have been well organised and involve several people. It is timely to remind all owners of stock that stock theft in New Zealand is an ongoing problem. While shoplifting costs New Zealand some $730 million, stock theft is reportedly costing the country a further $120 million a year. In many cases stock theft causes the farmer a huge financial loss because once the cattle are lost he cannot replace them. Cattle rustling is a world-wide farmer problem and events such as a drought or natural disaster give rise to opportunistic crime. In America one farmer group advocates on their website that most stock owners already own a side-arm or rifle and they advise farmers, it may

be worthwhile to purchase a firearm, advocating that thieves really do not like it when the owner of that farm where they are planning or attempting to steal from, has a gun that the owner knows how to use. They also state, you do not need to use the gun to cause injury or worse, you just need to fire it over their heads to let them know that you are around and you don’t appreciate them taking what belongs to you. While I am not advocating that New Zealand farmers should be encouraged in the same way to stop stock thefts, it is important that you carry out the basic steps in an endeavour to protect your stock from being stolen. Don’t take the law into your hands if you see someone stealing your property. There’s a chance that the thieves may be armed themselves and could hurt you or worse if you approach them. Report any sales of very cheap cattle meat that suddenly appear. This might be a sign of stolen cattle. Other stock may be taken during the theft, such as sheep, goats and any animal that appears of value. Maintain good stock records. The purchase, sale and identification records are important particularly if the issue ends up in Court. Stock should be tagged, earmarked or branded. Tags can be removed. Earmarks and branding are more difficult.Working with neighbours in a Neighbourhood Watch set up is also very good, keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. Let your neighbour know if you are going to be absent from the farm for more than a day or two. SERVICES & MACHINERY

On-farm security is important and the use of security cameras. The penalties for stock stealing in New Zealand can be severe. Last year in the Wellsford Court a rustler was sentenced to nine months’ home detention, 200 hours of community work and ordered to pay more than $48,000 in reparation to victims after stealing 21 pregnant cows in Wellsford in 2010. Luckily for the stock owners they could identify the cows from photographs. They were able to use DNA testing which also showed that many of the cows had been impregnated by their bulls. Photographs and weighing the cattle is also very valuable when selling stock. Farmers of New Zealand know of two situations in New Zealand where a farmer sold his stock to the local meat works and when he got his weights back, they did not correspond with his weights. In fact one animal was classified as being emaciated. The other case most recently involved the downgrading of animals caused from bruising. The farmer maintained that when the cattle were loaded onto the truck they were all healthy. The theft of animals is covered in the Crimes Act 1961. The Police also encourage people in rural communities to get into the habit of recording the details of unfamiliar people or vehicles that may be acting suspiciously and passing that information on to local Police. Information about staying safe in rural communities is available on the Police website: http://www.police.govt.nz/ safety/rural.html 

HD sees the bigger picture  by Andy Bryenton

The new Ranger 570 HD carries all the tried and true features of the Ranger 500 which it replaces and more, with major improvements in power, handling, styling and durability developed right here in New Zealand. Recently top engineers and management from the US based manufacturer came to see just how rugged our countryside can be. They witnessed first hand the kind of day’s work Kiwi farmers expect from a UTV or quad, and after taking on board some vital tips and pointers from our men of the land, they set to work making the already popular ranger even beefier — cattle pun intended. The recipe begins with a new ProStar 567cc, 40hp EFI engine with 25% more power. Add in a 1.5cm longer wheelbase for an even smoother ride (small changes, as Lotus boss Colin Chapman would tell you, providing big results). Then mix in some fresh new HD features — this doesn’t stand for High Definition, it means Heavy Duty. Boy, they’re not kidding, either. A look at the size and reinforcement of the Ranger’s new sway bar, upgraded rear driveshaft and grease fittings is enough to tell you that Polaris mean business.

Two things which Kiwi customers demand are hard-wearing parts able to take the knocks, and ease of maintenance and servicing. Both are delivered by the HD package, which gives the Ranger 570 an almost ‘built for the army’ feel. The impression here is that mere rocks, ruts and mud won’t make any significant impact. “Combine these smooth riding features with best in class power, 567kg of towing capacity and 226kg box capacity, no matter the task the Ranger 570 HD will work hard for you,” say Polaris bosses, including Polaris Industries Australia and New Zealand Country Manager, Brad Wolstenholme. “The visit by senior Polaris managers and engineers shows not only their commitment to understanding our market, but also to delivering products that are specifically designed for our quite unique conditions, climate and usage,” Combine these smooth riding, Kiwifocussed features with best-in-class

Be part of the LEGEND Legendary performance for Kiwi farms this Field Days... ADVERTORIAL

Racing driver, visionary, auto engineer and sporting hero – Mickey Thompson was all these things and more.

The company which preserves and expands upon his legacy in motorsport and innovation are proud to be strongly represented at the 2014 Northland Fieldays, thanks to a strategic alliance with the team at Gas and Tyre Services. It’s a timely reminder of just what a big impact this one man and the company he founded have made to the way we work and play with horsepower. Mickey knew that all the kilowatts in the world are no use unless that power is delivered to the ground with stable control. That’s why he pioneered new tyre construction techniques, adding tougher ply (and more of it) to form a rugged, hard-wearing tyre carcass able to support a deeper, grippier tread. Today, Mickey Thompson tyres still have that patented heavy-duty ply, and the deepest tread available. Couple this quality to innovations such as side-biting tread on the tyre’s ‘shoulders’, and you have some high-tech rubber indeed. Is it enough to tackle the hard conditions on Northland farms? You bet! In fact, many of Gas and Tyre Services’ customers go above and beyond the daily workload of your average ute, pushing their vehicles to the max in the farming, trucking and forestry industries. Ask them what brand they prefer, and you’ll find it carries the name of the man who made the Baja rally a household name — Mickey Thompson. Off-road drivers who tackle deep mud and steep hills for fun also enjoy the benefits of tougher, race-bred tyres. Mickey Thompson’s ‘Claw’ range, for example, are used in the USA for the demanding sport of rock crawling. Mickey himself was the originator of many off-road vehicles, and a familiar face at gruelling desert race meetings. The tyres his company build for fun and competition are in many ways more ‘serious’ than those other companies cite as top of the range for work.

This year the Mickey Thompson team will be there with representatives from Gas and Tyre Services, at site number 13b at the Northland Fieldays. No matter what kind of vehicle you drive in the rural North, they’ll have the perfect custom rubber to help you get more out of your machine — and your workday.

Forestry days recalled Farewelling vicar Susanne Green  by Joanne Speechly

 by Colin Patterson

After six happy years in Dargaville, Anglican vicar Susanne Green is moving on. She says that she will miss the community that has become her home and she will certainly be back to visit.

In the late 1940s the post-war economic boom meant almost limitless opportunities for energetic youngsters with a bit of ambition. Maurice Glamuzina was one and he took full advantage of the rapidly growing demand for sawn timber. His father Mate was a farmer with land in Red Hill and Aratapu. After older brother Leo returned after serving in the air force in World War II, Mr Glamuzina senior found he had lots of trees that needed felling. Using the strength of his sons he set up a sawmill near the Aratapu wharf to process the felled timber. Together they formed a company, M Glamuzina and Sons that for three decades was a fixture in the timber business around Dargaville. Now retired and living in Dargaville, Mr Glamuzina agrees a lot has changed. The mill he and his family ran is long gone and there is barely a tree left in Aratapu. But at one stage they were processing 100,000 battens a year and processing between 5000 and 10,000 fence posts a year for local farmers and dairy farmers. However, Mr Glamuzina agrees that the timber industry was even more dangerous than it is now, with a minimum of safety equipment. “My brother Ken died unloading logs. I was there when it happened.” Even though the company employed

“I’m retiring from parish ministry but I will continue to do chaplaincy work at Selwyn Park rest home in Whangarei. I also moved into a unit at the village on my 65th birthday, last September.” Originally from Melbourne, Susanne came to Northland in the early 1980s and loved it, so she decided to stay. “The weather’s great and the people are great. Working with people and the community is what I enjoy and will miss the most. “We have a lovely faith community gathered around St Peter’s Te Kopuru,

 Maurice Glamuzina from Dargaville recalls his days in the family’s forestry and timber business in the years following World War II

where we have a service every Sunday — except during January when they tell me everyone’s at Glinks Gully! All Saints Mititai has also been done up, so we have occasional services there too.” Prior to moving to Dargaville, Susanne was the vicar in Waiuku for about six years and prior to that she worked as a hospital chaplain. “I really enjoy doing chaplaincy work, so I hope to do more at the main hospital in Whangarei. I’ll also remain involved with Kaipara Budgeting Service, which will bring me over this way from time to time.” 

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

30 stuff and was a highly profitable exercise, Mr Glamuzina eventually decided he wanted to do something else. “I was doing all the bookwork. It was becoming too much. I had enough and walked out of the business.” With Mr Glamuzina gone, his father and brothers sold to Carter’s. “It was a thriving business. We should not have sold it.” Now 86, he says the timber industry has changed radically from his day. The old family operations have given way to corporate. Instead of being used for timber, most logs are exported to Japan or China. 

Dear Editor Having just received my latest rate instalment (KDC) I note after reading Mr Robertsons newsletter that the Kaipara District Council ‘has resolved to remit back to ratepayers certain penalties in unpaid rates’. I also see that penalties on unpaid rates at 31st December 2013 will be remitted if rates are paid by June 30th 2014. Before Christmas 2013 I wrote to Mr Robertson suggesting he give the NON ratepayers an ultimatum ‘pay your rates or have your services cut off’.

After all this time I do not think that giving these NON ratepayers another 6 months to pay and remitting their penalties is satisfactory. These people should be given 2 weeks to pay their rates and penalties or have their services cut off. Under these circumstances I presume it is alright if I do not pay my next 2 rate instalments until the 29th June 2014 and I will not incur any penalties. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!! Kim Biddles
