Teacher, conductor and director of the Salzburg Accordion Club, Jacob Noordzij, presented the 1963 Hohner Morino VI M to Kevin Friedrich, organiser of the collection at Dargaville Museum, at the 2014 Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) 67th Coupe Mondiale in Salzburg, Austria. The surprise presentation came after Mr Friedrich had concluded a performance using the unique instrument with the World Accordion Orchestra in Austria. “I couldn’t believe how fortunate I was to receive this as it is very historically
important in the evolution of the accordion, to have the extra extended free bass keyboard,” said Friedrich. “All instruments these days utilise the converter system but this keyboard was important back in the day, allowing a full classical repertoire.” On his visit to Dargaville, Mr Noordzij offered photographs of the official presentation and a sample CD, which will be on display with the accordion in the future. The largest display in New Zealand and potentially the Southern Hemisphere, the Accordion Gems display holds more than 200 instruments, many
of which are extremely rare. CIA public relations manager, Harley Jones, travels extensively internationally attending concerts and events and also attended the meeting in Dargaville. “This museum is becoming part of the living history of the accordion,” he said. “Kevin does an amazing job.” World ambassador for the CIA organisation, Kevin Friedrich, will return to Dargaville for the 12th annual afternoon of music on March 31. The event will be held at the Lighthouse Function Centre. For information phone 09 439 7555. ¢

A group of tradesmen led by Adam Stevens has replaced the original wooden framed windows with aluminium frames, revamped one of the toilet blocks, replaced wooden doors with aluminium, painted parts of the school and installed a brand new entrance way. “This rejuvenation of the buildings coincides with the new positive changes going on at the school,” said principal, Simon Schuster.

Matakohe project first stage opening
Church as a movie theatre
u by Paul Campbell
The old deconsecrated Anglican church at the Mangawhai Pioneer Village has gained a new lease of life as “onestop shop” to raise money for the village maintenance and restoration and its most recent role is as a picture theatre.
The first stage of the $23 million Matakohe bridges replacement and SH12 realignment is expected to open to vehicles in about two weeks as work on the project continues under fine weather conditions.

township, which is why vehicles are currently being diverted along Matakohe East Road. Ms Scott noted that children return to Matakohe School for their new school year on Wednesday, January 30. “The children will not be used to a high volume of traffic on this road without footpaths so please take extra care and reduce your speed. “We have been making the most of the mostly dry weather and the progress of works is dependent on continued good weather over summer and into autumn. We are holding a Matakohe Bridges community day 10am to 2pm on Saturday, March 9. We would love the Matakohe and wider communities to join us on-site before Bridge No 2 is opened to vehicles in March. When details are finalised, we will send out an open invitation. Drone footage of the realignment project is available at nzta.govt. nz/projects/connecting-nor thland/ matakohe-bridges. ¢

“We are on track to open 1.2km of the new alignment to all vehicles in midFebruary between the west end and the Ararua Road intersection,” said Fulton Hogan liaison manager, Jenny Scott. “The road surface will be stabilised with traffic on it, and then the final chip seal will be laid. The speed limit will be 30 km/h. Further information including a graphic will be distributed well-before we make this traffic switch.” Bridge No 1 guardrails have been installed, and the pavement construction crews are now driving over it to cross Parerau Creek. “The decks of four of Bridge No 2’s six spans have been poured and the steelworks on the fifth span are complete. Anti-graffiti paint will be applied to both bridges. “Work at the western end of the realignment is almost completed. All that is needed is to tie-in to the existing state highway and form the new intersection leading into Matakohe

p John Phillis, Mangawhai Theatre entrepreneur
Mangawhai Pioneer Village Trust member, John Phillis says he and fellow trustee Jim Wintle were looking at ways to gain income and the idea came up of showing films. “That was three weeks ago, and we have movies on Thursday and Sunday. Local volunteer Bert Sainsbury did a great job of shuttering the sash windows for afternoon shows to be held in darkness,” Mr Phillis says. “We brought 15 chairs for the theatre as such, which can be stacked
away and the church also becoming available for yoga classes, dances, and weddings. “So a marriage can take place in the church, with a marquee on the lawns outside for a reception. The church has become something of a one-stop shop providing an income source for the village.” Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children. The Kaiwaka Scottish Country Dancing Club is holding a family ceilidh on Waitangi Day, February 6, at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, gathering together to meet old and new friends in a friendly supportive environment.
For two Kaiwaka School students, 2018 completed a six-year journey of outstanding achievement after being awarded a prestigious Taonga Award. p Scottish Dancing is suitable for all ages and abilities and hugely beneficial to mental wellbeing according to the Alzheimer’s Society of New Zealand
The club has been building momentum since it began in July last year. Members meet regularly and perform demonstrations to the elderly and the public in Mangawhai. “We have folk in the club who are positive that dancing has helped their brain health and arthritis sufferers who notice the difference in movement when they miss a week,” said club teacher, Elaine Goldthorpe. The Alzheimer’s Society of New Zealand recommends that what is good for the heart is good for the brain, namely physical and mental activity — especially new things — social activity and a good healthy diet. Waikato personal trainer, Alison Storey,
says the social side of participating in group activities like Scottish dancing and line dancing are hugely beneficial to mental wellbeing. “The physicality of the movements exercise nearly all parts of the body, executing the figures exercises the mind and dancing in groups of six or eight creates the camaraderie that installs enjoyment of exercise, crucial to the consistency of exercise that reaps physical benefits. Beginners classes will commence at 9.45am each Wednesday from February 13, followed by the more experienced until noon. Rise to the challenge u by Andy Bryenton
Long ago, the Pouto lighthouse helped captains navigate the dangerous harbour bar. It was a light in the dark, which told them to be ready for the challenge. Now, this icon of the coastline is set to be a navigation point for a new adventure — a run, walk and cycle challenge set against a backdrop of amazing scenery — and it’s all for a good cause. The annual Pouto Lighthouse Challenge kicks off on Saturday, February 9, in the cool of the morning at 8.30 am. Medical centre nears completion u by Paul Campbell
A new medical centre for Paparoa is expected to open its doors in the next few weeks with tradesmen who started just after Xmas nearing completion of extensive renovations to the former Otamatea council building. Paparoa Medical Society chair, Graham Taylor, says the building has been extensively rewired “for data, electricity and for fire prevention and the internal plumbing has been completed. There have been new internal walls, ceilings replaced, and partitions — and gib stopping is getting underway. We will get the doors open in mid to late February, and then look at an official event to mark the occasion a little later.” The $350,000 project was necessary to bring the building up to modern compliance standards. “The process will transform the building into a modern fit-for-purpose facility, as befits a community building open to the public.” The medical centre will be operated by Coast to Coast Health Care Ltd with additional space to accommodate the Paparoa library, which shut down for the duration of the project.

Mr Taylor said space, which was to be occupied by the White Rock Gallery, was now available as the gallery has moved to Matakohe. “This extra space will be occupied by Coast to Coast for a treatment room and health facilities. Some other good news has been financial support from the community to ease the medical society’s short term overdraft which enabled the work to proceed. “The Ready Relief Team based at Maungaturoto has undertaken some fundraising, and they will be at Paparoa Farmers Market on February 9 hosting a barbecue.” Mr Taylor said the society is also “very grateful to many individuals and organisations from the Paparoa community for financial support.” As a charity, donations are eligible for a 33 per cent tax refund.

Life jackets exchanged u by Jill Dickie
Maritime NZ and Coastguard New Zealand are reminding boaties to replace and destroy their old life jackets as they can fail when needed most and may not comply with current regulations.
Gallery extension needs funding Mangawhai Artists Inc is fundraising to build a workspace extension at the existing gallery by presenting a silent art auction. The special exhibition opened on January 24 and will culminate in a live auction from 5pm February 2 at the Village Hall.
p Boaties queuing up to replace their old lifejackets, including some of the old-style kapokfilled types
Maritime NZ deputy director, Sharyn Forsyth, said old lifejackets are dangerous and should be replaced as soon as possible with modern foamfilled or inflatable lifejackets and destroyed so they cannot be reused or on-sold. “Worryingly, we know many Kiwi boaties are still relying on life jackets that are 30 to 50 years old,” said Forsyth. A promotional van has been touring New Zealand since the start of December exchanging life jackets in the Old4New campaign, and while almost completed its tour, boaties and water users are encouraged to take advantage of discount deals if they haven’t already done so at participating boating and outdoor retailers.
During December more than 1,200 old, damaged or out-of-date lifejackets were traded in across close to 40 locations. “The response is getting better every year,” said Sue Tucker from Coastguard. “We had more than 100 boaties queuing at our Nelson — that’s a whole lot of families that will be safer out on the water.“ Kapok-filled jackets are particularly dangerous, as the fibre absorbs water causing wearers to sink, and the cotton straps deteriorate during an extended period causing rotting or breaking. More information about safety, storage and details for checking inflatable lifejackets is at www. maritimenz.govt.nz/lifejackets. ¢
p An impression of the extension planned for the Mangawhai artists workspace building
The 160-member group is increasing rapidly in popularity and is running out of space for holding their workshop and community activities as well as presenting exhibitions of members’ work. The new extension would allow that space. “We are constantly asked if we can run more learning opportunities, and we are often asked when will we install a toilet! We have listened to the community and been thrilled by
community support in this ambition,” said chair Mary-Anne Boyd. “We have received all the consents and approvals we need, and we are ready to raise the money. “We know we have the support and generosity of Mangawhai community to help us make the extension a reality.” Items exhibited for both auctions can be viewed at the gallery or online at mangawhaiartists.co.nz/auction. ¢

While stopped for shopping at the supermarket the family left their two laden vehicles, one with a trailer and the other with their four bikes on the rack, unattended. When they returned, one bike was missing. Seeing something amiss, young rider Codie Preston offered to investigate while the family telephoned police and checked for security footage. He and friend, Kayden Wilson, rode off in opposite directions communicating with each other on walkie talkie radios. Ten minutes later Codie returned to report he found a man loading a bike
matching the description into his van after reportedly finding it in the bushes beside the car park and was taking it to the police station. Codie informed him that he thought it might be stolen and asked the man to follow him to the Countdown car park for identification. Owner of the bike, Niki Le Mesurier, was grateful the boys were on the spot at the right time. “If they had not been so helpful and gone looking, we would have lost the bike, taking us a long time to replace it. These boys didn’t have to help us, but they did. My family are truly grateful to Codie and Kayden.” ¢

LIFELONG LEARNING
What future for our region? u by Andy Bryenton
Looking to the future can be inspiring or frightening — it’s a matter of perspective. The problems to tackle in years to come are the flip side of opportunities for growth, prosperity and better living. Smart forward planning is the key to avoiding pitfalls on the road to success. Many local businesses are facing up to the biggest commitment of all — making sure that their team will not only have the right skills for today but the agility and focus to handle change in the future. It’s all about learning. Around the world, businesses realise a simple fact — to adapt in the fast-paced world of modern technology is to thrive. To stagnate is to wither away and disappear. That’s why the biggest asset of the modern business is staff who can learn on the job, updating their skills to meet the challenge. That ethos is to be found right here, in our small towns, in businesses as varied as motor mechanics, engineering operations, agricultural contractors and retail stores. At the foundations, a new generation of apprentices is being trained by forward-thinking bosses, who value longevity in their trade. These will be the electricians, plumbers, panelbeaters and builders (for example) who take care of our children’s generation and the fact that our local tradespeople are accredited to teach means that their skills are nationally recognised as top notch. The commitment to adaptation
and training goes beyond that, however. Many companies and professional organisations run programs of continual training, often having participation as a prerequisite to maintaining a top-level accreditation or status. It assures a thorough knowledge of the latest engine technology in the auto trade, for example, or the best practices in building. From apprentices up, businesses who incorporate learning into their culture outperform the competition in the long run. What does that mean locally? It means we should rally behind those of our local companies who have made a commitment to training the next generation. To support locals who are making the effort to ensure that here in the Kaipara, the knowledge base and skill level inherent in our business community is truly cutting edge. After all, think about the

LIFELONG LEARNING Skills ready for work u by Andy Bryenton
There are some things which can’t be taught by any textbook or online curriculum — but these values can be the most important when it comes time to join the workforce. As many young people contemplate their next moves in establishing a career in the working world, employers suggest the key traits, which allow them to make a decision about taking on a new worker or apprentice. It seems that these qualities are valued across all industries and all levels of skill. For many employers, they are more important even than specific knowledge of an industry or trade. While the ability to read instructions and plans, the ability to write concise notes and the basic mathematics skills needed to calculate costs, dimensions and lengths are taught in school and still very important, the rest of the checklist for employers is more a case of core values. Foremost of these is a willingness to learn. Coming into a new role, especially as an apprentice, there is, of course, going to be a lot to take in. The ability to admit that we’re starting fresh, from the point of relative ignorance, is hard to accept, even as adults. Employers need staff who will listen to their instructions, and accept that certain things are done in certain ways for a reason, be it for health and safety, or ensure a good result. The old dynamic of the master
and the novice is sometimes hard to fit into for young people who have confidence and energy — but it’s a time honoured way of learning for a reason. Other traits seem simple, but potential employers put them above the rest. The ability to come to work on time, ready for action — being well presented to meet customers, and knowing what is appropriate in a work environment in terms of dress and language. Caring for tools and carrying the right ones for the job each day. These seem like easy things to remember, but forgetting them can undermine an employer’s confidence. Conversely, being there bright and early with all your kit will inspire trust, and sets you up for a successful day. Finally, nearly every employer spoken to places basic initiative above the rest. A new recruit or apprentice who actively looks for tasks to complete when their current job is finished will definitely go places. Those who ask — ‘what’s next?’

p When it comes to starting a new job, employers insist that it’s attitude, not an inherent skill, which is the most important trait
when one aspect of a job is complete are the ones who will learn faster, after all. There are plenty of opportunities out there for those who are prepared to put in the hours, learn from the ground up and cover the fundamentals. Those who persevere will be well placed to become business owners in their own right, and in years to come may well end up teaching a new generation the skills they have earned through being smart, punctual, and receptive to learning. ¢

LIFELONG LEARNING A fresh look at apprenticeships u by Andy Bryenton
In the middle ages, when very few could read but many hands were needed in specialist crafts, becoming an apprentice was a big turning point in a young person’s life. It meant the chance to learn trade secrets, which would set you in good stead to become a master, own your own workshop, rise above being a feudal serf, and possibly even gain the attention of nobles and the king. An apprenticeship meant access to the big guilds — like the Armourers and Smiths, Bakers and Tailors — who

managed pensions and medical bills for their members, sorted legal disputes, collected debts from troublesome customers, and served as research and development centres, where masters created new technology. Guilds were the first to offer equal status to skilled women in certain crafts, in a time 1,000 years before the idea of gender equality. Today, an apprenticeship offers some of those same advantages. Learning is hands-on, on the job, which benefits those who learn better by example than from a book. Master craftspeople work one on one with the young folks they may very well intend to replace them when they retire. During a period of up to
seven years, young folks progress while assisting with real jobs in the field — that’s a similar study time to becoming a doctor. It’s something we need as a nation — there are well-publicised shortages in many trades due in part to a lack of apprenticeship programmes late last century. Best of all, the path from apprentice to skilled master comes with a very high statistical chance of owning one’s own business compared to other means of study. That’s good news for young folks who aspire to be their own boss — and a tribute to the apprenticeship process, which has endured since ancient Egyptian times. ¢

Arapohue A&P Show Young farmers time to shine u by Andy Bryenton
The forthcoming Northern Wairoa A&P show at Arapohue is not just a chance for families to have some fun, or for rural folks to celebrate the country life. It’s also a crucible of competition in which bragging rights are earned, and valuable skills are sharpened up. True to form, this means that youngsters from an agricultural background are keen to pit their abilities against each other in friendly competition. There’s an opportunity for young people of all age groups to put their skills to the test against opposing teams. At the junior end of the spectrum, this takes the form of Arapohue’s firstever Agri Kids event, in which teams of three young people join forces to tackle a range of six ‘module’ challenges. From
the ages of 8 to 13 years old, these kids will attempt to master trials of cooking, fencing, mechanical repair and more — taxing both muscles and brains, creativity and teamwork. New Zealand’s Young Farmers clubs have been a part of rural life for generations, and there are more than 80 NZYF clubs across the nation. Young farmers competitions are a popular part of the rural calendar, displaying those abilities which will help forge a new generation of professionals

The best of the country life u by Andy Bryenton
For the past 127 years, the late days of summer have been a time for the rural community of the Northern Wairoa to come together. A time for farming families to celebrate their achievements. In the early days of settlement, that was just what the concept of an agricultural and pastoral show was all about — an opportunity to reflect on how the harvest was progressing, and a time to meet and greet neighbours new and old. That feeling still prevails as 2019’s Northern Wairoa A&P show gets geared up for another year of fun and competition. Once again, the action is happening at the showgrounds at Arapohue. It’s a chance to engage in some friendly rivalry across a variety of uniquely Kiwi country pursuits, and, increasingly, it’s a chance to people from the town and the city to engage with the rural community. Those early pioneers loved to display the skills which were helping them establish homesteads and bloodlines of livestock. One can only imagine the rivalry between the shearers, woodchoppers and farmers of yesteryear when these skills were the difference

Arapohue A&P Show young up and coming farmers test their mettle against a range of challenges. The shearing competition will be more thrilling than ever, with the sport — a reflection of an industry which has been at the core of Kiwi farming since colonial days — in the spotlight thanks to the breakout independent movie She Shears. The flashing clippers will harvest wool at an incredible rate as top shearers ply their trade. Crucially, points earned here at the show count toward the official national championship. High stakes mean a huge effort, so this will be one to watch! Indoors, the traditional crafts of the countryside make for classic A&P display. Gigantic veggies are grown from the fertile local soil, delicious home baking, skilled handicrafts, tempting preserves and creative flower arrangements are all part of that century-plus of tradition, and the competition for a top ribbon is as fierce in these endeavours as it is out in the equestrian ring or the shearing arena. Of course, it’s not all about competing for glory. It is a fun day for the family, with displays of vintage cars, tough and unstoppable four-wheel drive machines, and a whole massive carnival of activities for the kids. This year, all of the carnival rides and attractions are offered for a gold coin donation, making this an affordable day out where the family can really get amongst the action. Try the mini quads, hit the bouncy castle and the slides, play some carnival games, bounce on the bungy trampolines — and then tuck into a delicious selection of foods. It’s easy to see why A&P shows around the nation are enjoying a resurgence of popularity, driven partly by a desire for city dwellers to recapture the feeling of ‘old New Zealand’. Indeed, many of the big attractions have not changed since those first shows, more than a century ago. Good fun does not come with a ‘best before’ date! This year’s A&P show happens on the February 9, with an early start to make sure the full list of events is able to fit in one day! There will be plenty of parking available, so plan to bring the whole family and enjoy this timehonoured tradition — a red-letter day on the Kaipara’s summer calendar.

“Yep deah, but now I’m not so shore.” Boss rattled the pages ova paper. “Says hear that Juicynda, the kiwi prime minista has hadda chat with the pommy prime minista about wot will happin after the poms leave the commin maket with Yourup. If they really do. I guess that’s importint for us farmers cos the poms still buy a lot of our meat, an’ wines and other food.” Sharlene had look at the papa then, an’ sed: ”That bluddy Donild Chump got a lot to ansa for deah. Loookit all then guvmint workers not getting’ paid, just cos’ he wants ter keep a stupid ‘lection promise he made about a wall.” “Darn rite,” seda Boss. “An look at alla trubble in France just now. Yep there’s a lotta importint news to be had.” Wile Boss was talkin’, I scored half ofa butted scone from Sharlene. But then she seemed ter choke on her cuppatees. “Oh good grief,” she sed. Only in blimmin New Zilland, an’ she red in her skooteacher voice. “They left litter on an Auckland beach, refused to pay for meals, stole from service stations and have since had threats made on their lives. It was a whirlwind nine days since the supposed and now infamous “Johnson” clan first hit the headlines. What began at the massive amount of rubbish left on Takapuna beach erupted into international headlines.” “Wot a load of cobblers,” seda Boss. “Sick and tyred of readin’ about sum tourists wot are a bit anti-social. But we gotta here about it day after bluddy day?
Ok so they made a mess ona beach and maybe didnint pay sum peeple proply. But there’s a hell ofa lot werse happining with home grown kiwi’s ter blame. An’ do we get page afta page of rubbish and social media rants an’ raves about them. Nah. I reckin the silly seasin is carryin’ on hear. I reckin it’s time the media at large started reportin’ interisting stuff. Yah might rite that in ya kolumn, eh Dog?” Well readas, I have sed wot Boss reckins. Sharlene sed sumthin’ about not throwin’ stones ina glasshouse. Dunno why. Anyway, off for a swim ina dam. Cheers Billy
