The announcement was made by the Associate Minister for Economic Development, Nathan Guy and director of Northpower, Richard Booth at the Northern Wairoa Memorial Hall. Northpower will spend around $30 million on the network build, $15 million of which will be self-funded and the remaining $15 million will be a Crown loan. The first town to benefit from UFB within Kaipara will be Dargaville west in January 2018 followed by Mangawhai Village in September 2018. It will be another two years before Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto and Ruawai are connected, with Paparoa in 2021. Mr Guy said it was a very exciting day for Northland and for small communities

to get connected across New Zealand and the globe. “It will be really exciting for those battling with either a dial-up or very slow broadband. This is going to increase the speed and transform these small businesses, which is really important. “This is going to transform the Northland economy — we know there are huge opportunities in the north and we also know there are some challenges. Digital infrastructure is going to provide a lot of solutions for tourism, agriculture and ultimately worklife balance,” he said. Kaipara District Council Deputy Mayor Peter Wethey said that those leaving with the ‘drift out of Auckland’ would now be provided with the same

broadband quality and service. “I see it as a substantial benefit to this region and I think we are going to the see the benefit in years to come. This is going to put us on a level playing field.” Director of Northpower Richard Booth said: “People who aren’t in these areas will benefit most from the government’s next investment, which is the rural broadband initiative RBI2.” However an official announcement will not be made until later in the year. The initiative will also address blackspots and mobile phone coverage, to further connect the rural areas in Northland. By the end of 2024, approximately 85 per cent of New Zealanders will have access to fibre.

Drought decision meeting

u by Anna Harding

u by Anna Harding

For the fifth consecutive year, Waipoua Lodge has been has been recognised as the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award. The rankings on Tripadvisor also show them as the top New Zealand small hotel, and eighth in the world.

A meeting of all Northland councils has been called to discuss whether or not the province is officially heading into drought conditions, requiring outside assistance.

“We are very grateful to all our wonderful guests who have written such lovely reviews about their stay which have made this award possible” say owners Ian and Fran Farrant. Tripadvisor is one of the world’s largest travel websites. Users rate their experience for others to see with any accommodation, restaurant or attraction listed. Fran says that they have definitely noticed an increase in customers since winning these awards. “The online world and online reviews are just so important these days. If you‘re not getting the reviews, people don’t have the confidence.” “When we bought the lodge we didn’t have a mission statement, and our guests p Waipoua Lodge owners Ian and Fran Farrant would write in our guest book ‘we will always remember, we will never part of the history of New Zealand. forget’ ” says Fran. That’s what makes the lodge ‘of’ New “Now our focus and vision is simple — Zealand as well as ‘in’ New Zealand. creating a memorable guest experience It’s about that whole personal feeling in every aspect of what we do. In this towards your guests, really welcoming historic homestead, surrounded by the them and wanting to give them the amazing Kauri coast, they are feeling best experience.” ¢

p From left: Minister Nathan Guy, dairy farmer Hal Harding, Northland candidate Matt King and Rural Support Northland chair Lindsay Wells, in the dry hills of Hal’s farm, outside of Dargaville

The move follows a meeting last week between Rural Support Northland, Federated Farmers, Dairy NZ, Fonterra, Beef + Lamb, and forestry and horticulture representatives. “There was a decision made then that we have to be ready for a drought,” said rural support chair, Lindsay Wells. “Northland farmers are pretty resilient, and they’ve been through these sort of things before and we don’t want to make it any worse by calling it a drought. “We are having another meeting next Tuesday where the regional council and all the district councils are invited along, and we will ascertain at that point whether we will be heading

for a drought or not.” The meeting also follows a visit to Kaipara and wider Northland by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. “For me it’s all about getting on the ground, understanding how farmers are coping,” he said. The Ministry of Primary Industries says the process of declaring a drought starts with the Rural Support Trust sending a request to MPI declaring an adverse effect. “If that did occur then MPI would provide some extra support, some flexibility through IRD for taxation,” Mr Guy said. “It’s early days yet, but farmers I’ve spoken to have said it’s similar to other droughts like 2013.” ¢

Enthusiastic leaders required

Record fire call-outs for 2016 If you noticed more fire sirens in 2016, a record number of fire call-outs for Dargaville, Ruawai and Te Kopuru is the answer.

u by Joanna Manson

The St John Youth Cadet Programme in Maungaturoto is about to get underway for 2017 but they still need more volunteer leaders.

p Maungaturoto Division at a Northland competition in 2016

As the school term begins, divisional manager for the St John Youth Cadet programme Nyree Alcock is on the lookout for keen volunteers to help out. “We are in desperate need of leaders. We’ve got all the cadets who have amazing enthusiasm, but we really need leaders.” Nyree says that no particular prior experience is needed as St John will provide full training to those interested in taking on the role. “All training is provided we just need someone who is excited about working

with our youth and can guarantee to be there every Thursday for a couple of hours in the afternoon,” she says. The programme is in its seventh year and caters for six to 18 year olds who are divided into groups depending on their age group and aim to complete a badge a term. The cadets will meet on February 16 at the Maungaturoto St John Ambulance Station. Anyone wanting to volunteer their time to be a programme leader can contact Nyree — nyree.k.alcock@hotmail.com ¢

WHY WAIT FOR THE FIELD DAYS!

Local firefighters will be hoping to keep fire call outs to a minimum in 2017 after three brigades listed new call out records. Dargaville ended 2016 with a total of 264 call outs which is 41 more than the following year, Ruawai ended with 128 and Te Kopuru had 89 call-outs. Dargaville Chief Fire Officer Jeffrey Palmer said the community needs to understand the impact these call-outs take on a volunteer firefighter’s life. “Whether they are working, sleeping or even spending time with their families, it all eats into their personal time. “We are hoping the incidents and call outs will be reduced in 2017

as I’m sure it will be appreciated by our firefighters’ partners and employers” he said. With fire call outs at an all time high it is also a timely reminder for the public to put their hands up and volunteer for their local fire brigade in 2017. Ruawai Chief Fire Officer Kevin Evans says his brigade needs three to four more volunteer firefighters. He welcomes anyone who is committed to helping the community, lives within five minutes of the Ruawai station and is over 16 years old. New volunteers can sign-up at training nights which are every second and fourth Monday of each month at 7pm. ¢

Welcoming new faces

u by Anna Harding

Dargaville Arts Association is bringing four workshops to town during February at their art centre in the old municipal building in Hokianga Road, Dargaville.

p The staff at NorthSouth Multi Media are pleased to welcome two new reporters onto their editorial team. Joanna Manson and Anna Harding will be covering stories for the Kaipara Lifestyler as well as writing for a number of Farming Lifestyles papers throughout the country. Joanna has a background in online writing and hails from Hawke’s Bay. She is currently living on a farm in Ruawai. Anna is our cadet journalist and was born and bred in Dargaville. She is back from a year and a half travelling around Europe and America, which she finished with a trip to Rio to cheer on her cousin Emma Foy at the Paralympics.

The first workshop is an introduction to water colours with established artist and tutor Adrienne Dietrich. “It is the first in a series of three introductory workshops. The other two, coming up in March and April, are an introduction to gouache followed by soft pastels,” said the arts association workshop manager Heather Carrigan. The second workshop is being held by carver and card maker Robyn Mitchell. It is also the first in a series of four monthly speciality card workshops, with the first being iris folding style cards. The third is a workshop on making flax flowers with weavers Katie Tito and Heather Carrigan. They will show how to weave “four very simple flax flowers, and we will also talk about dying them, cutting flax safely and respecting the plants and Tikanga around cutting Harakeke,” said Heather. ADVERTORIAL

Go far with NorthTec It’s not too late to enrol for a study programme with NorthTec this year. You can stay close to home and get qualified for a career in the trades or a land-based industry by studying here in the Kaipara. With tutors who are both passionate and knowledgeable about their subject, you’ll be supported to achieve your goals. You’ll enjoy small class sizes where you’re never just a number, and your fellow students become like whanau, encouraging you to do your best. If you’re thinking of taking advantage of Northland’s booming property market, have a look at our trades training programmes. For new starters in the industry, the Certificate in Elementary Construction is a fees-free Level 2 programme which provides a great introduction. You’ll be hands-on working on small building projects to develop your knowledge of basic construction and maintenance techniques. The programme will prepare you for an industry apprenticeship or a job as a trade assistant, as well as being excellent groundwork for higher level studies. NorthTec’s Dargaville centre also offers the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills at Level 3, specialising in either carpentry or commercial painting. Both programmes will give you the essential techniques and knowledge needed to work in the local construction industry, with a focus on understanding how the trades sector

works and applying your skills in a range of settings. For those who prefer to work on the land, the Kaipara area is also home to programmes in agriculture, horticulture and land-based sustainability practices. The New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Horticulture Focus) is a Level 2 programme, meaning it is fees-free to learners of any age, giving students the essential skills for entry-level jobs. There’s also the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (General), a Level 3 programme which will give you further skills in this industry. The New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Farming Systems) is a Level 3 programme which teaches the skills required in the pastoral farming sector. You’ll gain theoretical knowledge and also learn how to put it into practice on a real, working farm. If you’re interested in starting your own horticultural enterprise, the New Zealand Certificate in Land-Based Sustainability Practices (Level 3) will set you on the right path, teaching the principles of growing food organically and making the most of your land. To enrol or to find out more about NorthTec study options, call 0800 162 100, visit northtec.ac.nz, or come and see us at 52 Murdoch Street, Dargaville.

Pedestrian zone plans are opened up u by Anna Harding

After a mixture of feedback, Kaipara District Council is looking to the business community to lead future pedestrian only zones for special events. In 2015, community facilitator Darlene Lang Gent and community planner Annie van der Plas asked the community what they wanted to see done in Dargaville, via “public meetings, a pop up-shop in town where people could come and talk to commissioners, and school visits — all sorts of public consultations,” p Kaipara District Council staff Brian Armstrong, Hamish Watson, says Darlene. New iwi liaison officer for Kaipara u by Joanna Manson

Police iwi liaison officer Phillip Kahotea brings 37 years of experience in the force to his new position in Dargaville.

p Police Iwi Liaison Officer Phil Kahotea and North Kaipara Maori Warden Haki Wihongi

No stranger to the Kaipara area he was the community police officer at Ruawai for three years before pursuing his dream of becoming a dog handler. After 26 years in Whangarei he was ready for a change and left for an overseas post in Papua New Guinea for 12 months. His latest role is something he is truly passionate about. “It’s our vision that all Maoris live full and prosperous lives free from crime and road trauma. Our goal is to build the public trust and confidence by improving trust and confidence of Maori,” he said.

Working alongside Maori wardens, Correction services and Victim Support, Officer Kahotea hopes they can help youth in the community get back on the right track. One of these supporters is North Kaipara Maori warden, Haki Wihongi who has been involved for the last 33 years. Along with 21 other volunteer wardens he works with the community and encourages those who feel too shy to deal with police. Pest control for forest u by Anna Harding

The Tangihua forest east of Dargaville is to become a pest controlled area, following representation to the Northland regional council by the Tangihua Lions, who also have a lodge in the forest. “The paperwork for the Tangihua CPCA is currently being finalised with the various parties and the project will officially start within weeks” says councillor Penny Smart. The forest covers more than 3,000 hectares of mainly podocarp broadleaf forest and some kauri. It lies partly in the Kaipara and partly p Tangihua Lions Lodge Trust chairman Gerald Mannion and regional council Kaipara constituency representative Penny in the Whangarei district. New look for cafe

It pays to be safe

u by Joanna Manson

by Ihapera Paniora, Hammonds Law

It is vital that the will you possess is both practical and enforceable. For example, did you know that a change in your relationship status after you made your will, such as separation or marriage, can have the effect of invalidating all or part of your will? Or that something as simple as a paperclip mark or staple can cause problems in obtaining probate of a will? The witnessing attestation is also critical to a will’s enforceability and could lead to problems and expense further down the track. The ‘will kits’ which we have seen do not emphasise this enough, and we imagine this is because they may be published in jurisdictions with different requirements to New Zealand. These kits are useful tools for providing you with information on drafting a will. However, they can be problematic if they are exclusively relied upon. They should not be used in substitution for the advice of trained and experienced professionals.

You may think that you are saving a few hundred dollars at the time you are making a will from a will kit, but if you get the document wrong, or its execution wrong, you may not achieve your desired result. You may create a document that is invalid, or which needs to be validated using very expensive high court procedures. At Hammonds Law, we draft wills precisely in accordance with your wishes, ensuring that the final product is a legally valid and enforceable testamentary document. We also store wills in our safe, so they cannot be lost, misplaced or tampered with. You can have a copy at any time. Hammonds Law and its predecessors have been providing these services for well over a hundred years, so talk to us and we will provide the right advice.

Ruawai woman Annissa Thompson is following her dream by opening her very own cafe, The Well.

p Owners of The Well cafe Annissa Thompson and husband Reuben

Formerly known as ElleCee’s, Annissa has taken over the Ruawai premises and has been busy renovating the space to give it “a new look and feel inside. “I’ve always been involved with food and love baking. Owning a cafe has always been on the bucket list so when the opportunity arose I thought I’ve got to do it.” Her specialities include a marshmallow slice which is already a well known and popular treat amongst friends in the district. “Everyone is looking forward to my marshmallow slice — normally I always offer to make it for fundraisers,” she

said. The Well will offer gluten free options and further down the track Annissa hopes to add raw food to the menu. “There is definitely a market for it and it’s a healthy alternative to offer people,” she said. Looking ahead, Annissa’s goal is to employ local people and give them an opportunity to work in her cafe. Until then she has taken a leap of faith and will be running the cafe as well as juggling all of the baking and food by herself. The Well is open in Ruawai six days a week, Monday — Saturday 7am–4pm. ¢

Family store closes

u by Joanna Manson

u by Ann Morgan

The annual adventure race to Baldrock Mountain is back for another year with its Top of the Rock challenge.

The Salvation Army Family Store closed its doors in Dargaville last Wednesday but it’s hoped this is a temporary situation and that they will re-open in the near future.

p Dargaville Salvation Army Store volunteer Gina Chan with departing manager Mandy Wood p Competitors climb Baldrock Mountain, Kaiwaka

The race attracted over 400 competitors last year and organiser Cheryl Anderson is looking forward to building on that number while welcoming the event for its seventh consecutive year to Kaiwaka on February 12. With views of the Kaipara district and picturesque McCracken Lake, race goers are treated to a spectacular sight once they get to the top of Baldrock Mountain. And in case you wanted a selfie, a safety marshall who doubles as a photographer will be on standby to capture the moment. The competition is designed to attract both recreational and competitive sports people who are given the option of multiple events to participate in on the day. Cheryl says those interested need

not be concerned about fitness levels as there are no time constraints on completing any of the races. While some competitors prefer a scenic walk, others choose to take part in the 10km cross country run and 15km mountain bike ride. “We have marshalls in utes following the tailenders who will give you a ride back if you get tired!” she said. “Participants of all ages enter Top of the Rock, from pre-schoolers upwards — last year the $50 prize for the oldest competitor went to a 79-year-old.” There will be plenty of spot prizes on the day including a mountain bike up for grabs. Entries close February 10. To enter please visit http://www.kaiwakasports. co.nz/ to register. ¢ Proudly Supporting

“The store is overseen by the church in Whangarei and after the resignation of the Dargaville store manager we were unable to find someone to take over in the interim,” said store consultant Joel Supeck. “We will be talking with the corps officers in Whangarei about a plan for the future this week and in the meantime we would be grateful if people could hold on to any items they want to donate to us until the store reopens.” Departing manager Mandy Wood says her time at the store was a great experience.

“It has been a wonderful two and a half years working in the store. I resigned my position to be able to have time with my elderly mother who was diagnosed with cancer at Christmas time. “I will also be reopening my stained glass and art studio in the near future. My time at the store was really good fun and I enjoyed working with the volunteers alongside me and serving the members of the community. The people of Dargaville have been really generous with their donations and this has helped make the store a great success.” ¢

Dargaville honours Joseph McMullen Dargaville across innumerable storefronts and signposts, but there is no statue of the founder, no momentous gravestone or plaque at the central crossroads. This summer he would have been 180 years old. He came from protestant Huguenot roots in largely Catholic Ireland, the son of a doctor. Joseph went on to study at the prestigious Fermoy College where his mind was turned toward finance, and the fortunes to be made in the new colonies of the British Empire. He chose to travel to Australia made his career in banking. In 1865 he married

Anne Must, with whom he raised a family of six children. Joseph Dargaville came to New Zealand and rolled up his sleeves as inspector of the Union Bank’s agencies. It helped that he was a big man with a big personality. After a stint in Auckland — then a backwater to the thriving north — Joseph quit the bank and joined up with his in-laws in business. That business took him to the Northern Wairoa in 1871, where he immediately saw the potential for growth and change. Joseph first leased a mere four acres by the Kaihu river from local Maori leader Parore Te Awha. He swiftly built up a trading post and began a timber business, employing nearly 400 men. At the same time, another city builder and visionary Sir John Logan Campbell was in business in Mangawhare. But Dargaville’s vision was not just of a mill or a trading post. It was of an entire town.

Joseph Dargaville — 1837 – 1896

Hard work for hard men — the Kauri loggers who built this region flocked to the amenities and industry Joseph Dargaville built

While Te Kopuru and Aratapu already existed, Joseph’s planned community was designed to be set up for commerce, and far more ‘civilised’ — according to his own ideals — than the towns of bushmen, gumdiggers, shipwrights and lumberjacks down river. He paid for the docks and storage sheds, mills and tramways, shops and even a church. In a classic example of ‘if you build it, they will come’. His town soon filled with industrious people seeking their piece of the prosperity which ruled the north-west. From the 171 acres which Joseph purchased from Parore Te Awha at one pound sterling per acre, a planned community grew. Over the years it has outlasted the industries which gave it birth and even the towns which pre-date its existence just

downstream. Joseph Dargaville retained many of the key leases to ‘his’ town long after he stopped having an active hand in the timber trade, and he surveyed his domain from his residence atop the rise on Normanby Street — today the site of Norfolk Court rest home and hospital. During his later life Joseph was involved in the affairs of state and even served in parliament. He voted to block union with Australia and railed against corruption, even being censured for speaking out against political favours to business cronies. Joseph Dargaville died as a casualty at sea. He perished aboard the Mariposa while sailing for England in 1896. He was buried in the maritime fashion, with a large obelisk to his memory erected in Judge’s Bay, Auckland, in the grounds of Saint Stephen’s Church.

As timber came down from the hills, Dargaville became a centre for milling and shipping it out

Surf ‘n’ skate gets underway u by Joanna Manson

The unofficial surf and skate event of 2017 will draw crowds from around the country to Mangawhai this weekend. The annual Logger Heads long board surf competition taking place on February 4 has received both national and overseas interest. Contest director Tony Baker said he was excited that his community event would share the ‘rad’ weekend with the annual Mangawhai Bowl Jam which takes place the following day on February 5. “People are coming to see both events and it will be awesome to see them grow.” After competing and touring the NZ surfing circuit, Tony’s friends suggested he should hold a long board competition in his own backyard. “The logger heads are more about the community than finding a winner. The first year was quite small and since then it has gotten bigger and bigger - the vibe around it has grown,” he said. The phrase ‘Logger Head’ describes the traditional surf boards with a single fin and is a 1960s style of surfing. Just down the road at the Mangawhai Activity Zone, Jesse Peters will be

exciting to see where it has to got to,” he says. “It’s all about bringing skateboarders from across New Zealand to push each other and have a fun time while doing so.” The fun line-up of activities will have organisers praying for good surf and blue skies to top off a spectacular two days. ¢

Confusion of the Colonel u by Joanna Manson

A KFC billboard between Mangawhai Heads and the village has left locals scratching their heads and taking to social media in confusion. The billboard which has since been removed, was unfortunately erected in the wrong location by a third party advertiser as part of Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s annual appeal. KFC has supported Life Saving New Zealand since 2012 and donates part of their advertising fee for it’s billboards to surf lifesaving clubs

nationwide. Public relations firm, Sherson Willis, Associate Director Amy McKenzie says that the sign will not be replaced but the Mangawhai Surf Life Saving Club will still receive a share of the advertising fees. So far KFC have raised over $750,000 for the national association to date.

Jason has been involved in photography for around 13 years and had been asked many times whether he could teach people. “There was so much interest, and people were so excited about photography, so I decided to start the club,” he said. Jason grew up in Mangawhai and moved to California when he was 17 years old. He went on to live in the United States for 19 years, and it was there he became interested in photography, after visiting Hawaii on his honeymoon. “I had a little point and shoot camera and when I came home I found an online stock photography company. I sent them some of my work and they started selling. I then bought a proper camera and taught myself how to use it.” By the time he left the US he had established a full-time photography career shooting fashion. When he returned to Mangawhai five years ago, he moved into real estate photography, landscapes and portrait photography. “I love capturing a moment of beauty, whether that is the beauty of a person

or the beauty in nature, I love being able to freeze a moment in time so we always have it, whether it is a sunrise or a smile.” Jason hopes to organise monthly meetings and excursions for his students, to encourage them to get together and learn. ‘Simplify, then add lightness’ — it’s the mantra expounded by motoring legend and all-round automotive genius Colin Chapman. It lead him to found the Lotus sports car company and become a formidable name in racing at many levels. Cars built using this philosophy, from the Seven to the Toyota MR2, have delivered miles of thrills to generations. But what happens when an off-road bike goes on the same extreme ‘diet’? Nobody could ever accuse the Honda CRF450 of being sluggish. It’s the weapon of choice for racers around the world, after all. But for its new model Honda went back to the drawing board — with a scalpel. Here’s how serious they are. One part of the subframe — a patent-pending aluminium honeycomb — has been completely redesigned to save just 200 grams. Those grams add up. The overall 2017 CRF450 is lighter, more balanced and meaner than ever. It’s lower, thanks to a cranked-down rear shock built to incorporate a more efficient air induction system. It’s got a lower centre of gravity too, and a narrower cross section. Even the switchgear has been pared back to save those precious grams. The fuel tank is lightweight titanium instead of steel. In fact, an electric start is an option on this bike, for those who feel that a battery is a terrible weight to lug about, let alone a starter motor. After all, God gave us a big right boot, why not use it? Under the skin the CRF450 is noticeably new in all aspects. Of course, to match that slimming diet, Honda has put their machine on a muscle-building course of engineering tweaks as well. Not only does the new bike breathe better, it

also boasts higher compression, a more efficient valve angle and higher valve lift, while still retaining the advantages of Honda’s Unicam engine design. The Honda engineers have even added DLC — not downloadable content, but diamond-like carbon inside the engine to reduce friction. Yes, this bike finally finds a good use for the stuff engagement rings are made of! There

are strictly limited numbers of the CRF450 available worldwide — it’s a beast in huge demand. Dargaville Honda have secured a tiny handful, already spoken for by excited customers. Engineering new horizons u by Andy Bryenton

Growing up on a thriving dairy farm, Dargaville man Greg Smith learned first-hand the demands that modern farming places on machinery and equipment. p Real steel — when drift legend Gaz Whiter wanted a custom exhaust system for his latest creation, Greg Smith answered the call

After serving his apprenticeship and rising through the ranks to become foreman of a prominent engineering company, Greg took the bold step of striking out on his own, starting his own company and setting his sights on growing the business. It has taken several years to reach the point where he finds himself today — the proprietor of a new, custom-built workshop, and the leader of a skilled team who are in great demand from a range of industries. Having purchased metal restoration business Western Blast and Paint, Greg and his partner Vanessa set about expanding their Day Street premises to encompass engineering work as well as media-blasting and spraying. As well as constructing a physical home for his business, Greg Smith Engineering,

he’s built a team with a variety of skills — blasting and painting expert Vance; mechanical, welding and engine repair specialist Steve; and a pair of dedicated apprentices, Adam and Mitchell. Vanessa and her assistant Brenda take care of administration, making the work flow smoothly. As well as offering a wide range of engineering services, the whole team share a definite passion for horsepower! A quick visit to their new site reveals big V8s and classics awaiting attention from the pros, and recently Greg has been pleased to assist in creating a new drift ‘weapon’ for superstar Gaz Whiter — his custom exhaust system making it possible to slide a big V8 into the drift racer’s Nissan.
