In the early hours of June 14, while husband and father, Sam Lord, was ill in hospital, his wife Koren awoke to their house at Tokatoka full of smoke. The house was on fire. Fighting down panic she managed to quickly rouse her three young children and get out of their home. “I received an early morning call in the hospital from my wife to say ‘our house burnt down last night’. In disbelief I said ‘you’re kidding’, however it was no joke,” said Sam. After serving in the navy and living in Devonport, the Lord family decided to move to the Kaipara to raise their family and in 2001 purchased a farmlet overlooking the harbour at Tokatoka. Then, five years ago, Sam was diagnosed with chronic renal failure and he is currently waiting for a kidney transplant, undergoing dialysis three days a week. So the night-time fire was another massive blow for the family. Ruawai Fire Chief, Kevin Evans, was first on the scene of the blaze. “When I arrived there were flames rolling out of the house — it was well alight. I was relieved to see that Koren and the kids were out safely but the house was devastated. The only things remaining were a few clothes that had been in the clothes drier,” he said. But within hours a friend of the family, who asked not to be named was receiving phone calls from people eager to help the Lords.

“We were flooded with offers. The first priority was clothes as all they had were their pyjamas but within days the family had almost everything they needed thanks to the kindness of the community.” The family also received a donation from the Ruawai Lions club. “As part of our club’s policy, we contribute funds to anyone in the district

Haydn Andrewes has always enjoyed a challenge and has recently taken on the role as building inspector at the Kaipara District Council “When Jim Vallance told me he was retiring, I was keen to apply,” he said. Haydn, who has lived in the Kaipara since he was two years of age, brings to the position over 14 years’ practical building experience. After serving his apprenticeship, he was employed by a local company as building foreman for two years. Eager to utilise the skills and experience under his belt, Haydn started his own business in 2005 and at one time employed Haydn Andrewes — new KDC building inspector three staff. After 110 years, she’s still the heart of Maungaturoto This historic colonial tavern has been given a new lease of life This weekend saw the grand reopening of a Maungaturoto icon — the historic Maungaturoto Hotel, now under new management and revitalized for another hundred years of good times. Built in 1902, the classic colonial building is being carefully restored with the help of local craftspeople, bringing it back to the state of its glory days last century. It’s a labour of love that hasn’t gone unappreciated, as over 400 people came to town over the weekend to celebrate the life — and new life — of one of New Zealand’s most interesting historic taverns. As Shaun Kelly’s Irish band played the same refrains the Albertland settlers may well have danced to, guests tucked into a huge traditional hangi meal, with over 200 fed in one mammoth sitting. Good food washed down with cold ale has always been the mission of the Maungaturoto Hotel, and the Collins family and their staff are proud to keep this fine tradition going! A bouncy castle kept the kids entertained while the adults enjoyed the fine clear winter afternoon sunshine. With a new lounge bar outfitted with locally made macrocarpa furniture, and a restaurant sporting the talents of a top ex-Auckland seafood chef, the ‘grand old

lady’ of the East Kaipara is enjoying a resurgence in popularity for all the right reasons. The new proprietors expect that summer will bring tourists eager to visit what is perhaps the only tavern on earth to have been nearly shipwrecked twice (a bizarre true story), bringing business to the entire area.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.
Through the eyes of strangers by Brian Eastwood
Travel north from Auckland on State Highway 1 and you see little of Kaipara Harbour. Turn off at Brynderwyn to Highway 12 and just before Paparoa you catch a glimpse of the harbour down Pahi River to the beach resort. Go past Matakohe to the hills above Ruawai and harbour and river start to appear. Or take Highway 16 from Wellsford, climb the hills heading towards Helensville, stop at some of the several lookouts and you see much of the southern parts of the harbour. Just how big the waterway really is starts to become clear. To get easily around the Kaipara the

first settlers had to travel by boat and strangers to the district were often surprised by the size of the harbour and the scenery they saw. One visiting correspondent wrote, ‘The Kaipara is a vast inland-sea, over 30 miles in length from north to south and into which innumerable rivers flow. Within the estuary and the various navigable rivers and creeks that flow into it, there is nearly 1,000 miles of coastline. In general people know little about the extent or magnificence of this district’. Another newspaper man, on tour around North Auckland with Prime
Minister Richard John Seddon, told how they boarded the steamer Durham at Dargaville and headed down river — ‘past Aratapu where several vessels were loading and into the Kaipara Harbour where the ocean swell soon made its presence felt. It was just about dark when the Durham rounded the sandbank opposite the signal station and once more started to thread its way inland in a north easterly direction. Young musical director Paparoa is on the air makes theatre debut “There are now five bars at the Paparoa Pub.”
Otamatea Repertory Theatre is on the brink of opening its latest production, ‘Oliver’, with a new musical director, Warwick Simpson Simpson, recently returned from Sydney in 2010, has been getting back into the Northland music scene playing with bands such as Maura Flower Trio, Blue Note Trio and The Red Arrows. “While I’ve always been involved in music, I was new to the theatre. I was asked to play in the orchestra for the production of ‘Miss Saigon’, and then ORT’s production of ‘Annie’ in 2011. After working on those, I decided to step up to the challenge of being Music Director for ORT’s latest production, ‘Oliver’.” “There’s been a lot of hard work put in, but it’s great fun working with the ‘Oliver’ cast and crew, and it’s awesome to see the show coming together. I’ll be working with a talented group of musicians — Ray Palmer, Pippa Mason, Ian Mason, Valeria Maw, Andre Labonte, Sarah Edgecombe and Aaron Randall — to provide the accompaniment to the classic show.” Simpson’s grandparents, Nick and Win Nicholas, are Life Members of the Otamatea Repertory Theatre and it is fitting that Simpson’s involvement as musical director should begin on the year that the theatre celebrates its 50-year anniversary. Director, Peter Flower, is glowing in his praise of the young maestro. “It is fantastic to have such a talented and

The comment from a local farmer might cause some wonderment about the small village tavern, but in fact the speaker was commenting on cell phone signal strength with the advent of new technology in town. Until this month, the residents of the village in the valley were bereft of cell phone coverage, apart from the odd high vantage point in the area. Now the village and surrounding farms have efficient and fast cellphone and broadband internet coverage to rival that of the major cities. It all stems from the new 25-metre monopole tower that was was switched on late last month which now provides service to about 430 addresses in the surrounding community. The service offers wireless broadband via a high performance modem and adds a WiFi network into the home. “Phone calls can also be made through this service by plugging an existing landline phone directly into the modem, removing the need for a landline connection,” said Vodafone’s Michele Baguley.
“Customers can port their existing landline number to this new service, with no monthly access fee for calling.” Under the government’s five-year rural broadband initiative, Vodafone is upgrading 387 existing cell towers and building a further 154 new towers in rural areas all over New Zealand. Local residents can find out if this service will be available at their address by checking www.vodafone. co.nz/rural-broadband.

The way forward 1 Immediate Short term issues 1.1 Withdraw the draft LTP so that the rating system is not changed and the maximum rate increase is no more than 7%, and make the necessary adjustments to live within that income. 1.2 The mayor and deputy must resign, or ratepayers through a rates strike must replace council immediately with a commissioner as we need better governance and hope. 1.3 A retrospective forensic investigation of all council business, resolutions, borrowings, must be held. We need the truth in order to correct and proceed. The Ecocare situation regarding both physical and financial aspects must be thoroughly and more completely examined along with all council borrowings, and the enquiry findings and recommendations to High Court or Commission of Enquiry status. 1.4 Responsibilities must be determined and recoveries vigorously pursued. 1.5 Arrange ratepayer representative groups leaders to liaise with the commissioner, then later with a new council, OR 1.6 Get government to convert the review team to a review authority with additional appointments from ratepayer groups to replace the present council. 1.7 Identify, develop and start preparing better prepared candidates for the future elections to council and mayor. 2 Mid-term improvement suggestions 2.1 Strengthen local Citizens and Ratepayers groups involvement. A Charter with Council, and some council funding will improve communication and engagement of ratepayers and residents, and provide more balanced information and knowledge to and fro which will assist council get it right more often at much lower cost. 2.2 Reduce council’s involvement with ratepayers wherever possible, and improve contestability of and for council services. 2.3 Create the ability to challenge council at lower cost via arbitration with capacity to contract council. Elections each three years or rates strikes are inefficient. 2.4 Get the right people for the

times/situations involved. Kaipara has a wealth of capable retired or semi-retired people who can better manage at local level than council, at lower costs. Council has frequently received better advice from concerned ratepayers and residents free than from paid consultants. 2.5 Review and create more Kaipara relevant District Plans, and more simpler Long Term Plans. We need to restore growth in incomes and employment and control rates. The excessively lengthy documents disengage people and increase costs for no discernable benefit. We have had five attempts already at the draft LTP, because councillors have poorly considered basic concepts. 3 The main Long Term problems with Kaipara; 3.1 Improve Governance. Apathy must be overcome and possibly some standards established of basic knowledge of council functions and relevant legislation be made an eximation pre-requisite to stand for council. 3.2 More balanced information to ratepayers. There must be a stop to council ‘spin’ and council dominated media releases. Council must support ratepayers and resident groups’ ability to publicly communicate their viewpoint or criticisms. 3.2 Local Government legislation is too complex, too costly to administer and holds people hostage to those holding excessive discretions, power, and monopolistic positions. We have councillors frequently introducing new untried solutions to past problems rather than fixing them. 3.3 We need leadership with vision and courage and the ability to communicate and inspire, to recognise and develop Kaipara’s assets and its people’s wellbeing will follow.
Otamatea-Rodney Taniwha team ready for action
The Otamatea-Rodney team has done everyone proud winning the runner-up title at the Northland Primary Schools Rugby Taniwha Shield Tournament 2012. “Our boys stepped up and can hold their heads high. This was a massive achievement for the team, to get into the finals and now runners-up in the shield. I couldn’t have been prouder,” says team manager, Catherine Stewart. The boys set off to Hokianga on Sunday, July 1 and played at Rawene, Taheke, Whirinaki and Waiotemarama. They won against the Presidents, Bay of Islands, Whangarei Grizzlies and Hokianga to make it into the final against Whangarei Bears on Saturday, July 7. The final result was Otamatea-Rodney 5 to Whangarei Bears 17. “The young men played with their hearts and they played hard. The week was action packed with no down time. Team building was a big factor during the week.” Every morning started with an early run, followed by a swim in the sea at Opononi. “The team were amazing on and off the field and worked so hard, giving 150 per cent most of the time. Our coaches Chris Hickey, Hira Kaire, Mike Peeni, and our strapper Bronwyn Hames were outstanding as were all the helpers, cooks, supporters and parents. The friendships will never be forgotten by the boys, coaches and management. On quite a few occasions the hair clippers were bought out showing support for one another.” “I would also like to say congratulations to the young men that were selected for the Roller Mills Trials — Ben Stewart, Simon Parker, Malachi Peters, Rhys Shadbolt, Braydon Bellamy, and Te Awaroa Peihopa. Two birthdays in one Spotted in Whangaripo Rick and Sue Taylor are celebrating two birthdays this year — the 15th anniversary of the Woodturners Kauri Gallery and Studio and the third anniversary of the Dargaville and Kauri Coast Visitor Information Centre Rick has been moulding kauri into art for over 30 years. They may be old slabs but when the master woodturner gets his hands on them they magically transform into bowls, platters and hollow pots to name a few. Rick and Sue operated studios in Orewa and Rotorua but when ancient Kauri became difficult to locate they decided to move closer to the source and relocated to Dargaville in 1997 where they opened the gallery in Murdoch Street. Since then the gallery has been extended to include a workshop and Rick has a supply to keep him busy for a number of years. “I have been lucky enough to have had access to some of the best ancient Kauri in Northland,” says Rick. Rick also offers tuition in wood turning. “I still enjoy turning and teaching others and having people from all over the world visiting the studio.” Sue opened the Dargaville and Kauri Coast Visitor Information Centre when the council-run facility closed in 2009. The centre, which is adjacent to the gallery, processes accommodation, coach and tour bookings and plans itineraries for groups as well as accommodation for major events such as the Northland Field Days and Twin Coast Cycle Challenge.
“A principle aim is to encourage visitors to stay at least one night on the Kauri Coast and to experience the uniqueness the region has to offer,” says Sue.

Petra and Bev, who have bred Appaloosas at Sparkling Acres for ten years, are concentrating on a new variety. ‘Petra Davidson with mare, Few in the Cru’ “We are one of the few studs in New Zealand with a primary from North Dakota, USA.” “We have five mares and produce focus on Sportaloosas,” says Petra. Dargaville Ball Make your school ball a night to remember It’s that time of year again — the season for glamour and style, limos and tuxes, dazzling hairstyles and the much-anticipated slow dance. That’s right — it’s ball season, and the jewel in the tiara for Dargaville students is the annual Dargaville High School ball — a much anticipated date on the social calendar It can be a stressful time for parents as well as the young revellers who look forward to their big night out. But with a little help the entire operation can be achieved with stress-free aplomb — and without the huge costs you may have seen on certain TV shows! For the guys it’s all about the timeless elegance of a well-tailored suit. Looking like a young James Bond is the aim, even if you’re more comfortable in gumboots and jeans the rest of the year. Renting something special is one way to go,
and there are a variety of suits on offer from 1930’s mobster chic to brightly coloured rock’n’roll numbers. But never underestimate the usefulness of owning a neat black suit of your own — this could be the right time to have one measured up that’s perfect for weddings and parties. The best advice for the girls is to find a style that suits you — not one that suits a random celebrity. Plan in advance for the finishing touches like nails, hair and makeup, so as not to miss out on hotly contested appointments, and don’t be afraid to ask for an honest opinion on that ‘perfect’ gown — label and price are far less important than a colour and style which you can wear with effortless grace. Just remember to talk to your friends and your date well in advance to avoid colour clashes or the ultimate horror — wearing the exact same dress as your best friend!
Arriving in style is also a ball tradition, and while there is no Dargaville limo service there are plenty of classic cars and hotrods around this part of the country. With a little bit of persuading you might be able to get your hands on a chromed-out Chevrolet or Mercedes driven by one of your relatives in full chauffeur’s regalia — and let’s face it, a white limo is so last year compared to some more serious horsepower. The main thing for everyone to remember is that the school ball is supposed to be all about fun — tempered with a little responsibility. It harks back to the days when a young person’s first formal party was a huge coming of age milestone, and it’s a chance today to prove that you’re part of adult society. Remember that all those ‘reality’ shows are great examples of what not to do (after all, those are paid actors making fools of themselves) and you’ll enjoy a great night out!

Improving on perfection How do you follow up a car which floored the automotive world with its combination of value-for-money thrills and razor-sharp handling? Is it possible to further refine a car which has re-ignited New Zealand’s love affair with the hot hatch, gathering up a swag of awards and giving rise to its own proprietary one-model racing league? These are the questions which could have kept Suzuki engineers awake at night when they received the design brief for the second generation Suzuki Swift Sport, but they came through with a bold programme of tweaks, nips, tucks and polishing which has produced a road car of rare brilliance. Stylistically the Swift Sport is edgy and aggressive, with racing cues evident from the finned front bumper and fog lights to the twin exhausts at the rear, and flowing through to a cabin with bodyhugging seats and bright red stitching. It’s a definite statement of intent, because as soon as you push the start button on the Swift’s nicely appointed dash it becomes apparent that none of this is for show. With variable valve timing, variable intake and some smart tuning the second-generation Swift Sport develops 160 NM of torque and 100 kilowatts of power — impressive in a car this size and weight. But while the Suzuki’s compact engine is by no means thirsty, push the little car into some twists and turns and you’ll find that it is hungry. The Swift Sport eats corners, and it will give you an appetite for them too. More than any car I’ve recently tested the new Swift Sport brings real enjoyment to driving. It has the same sense of
balance, of engineered, mechanical harmony apparent in the original Mazda MX5, but refined and upgraded for the 21st century. A silky-smooth sevenspeed automatic transmission delivers a precisely managed flow of power to the ground as the bends are attacked, dominated and left behind in a chuckling exhaust burble. The original Swift Sport was compared to the classic rally-racing Mini, but this is one better. A practical, spacious car with great fuel economy that rolls the

Heat and ventilate with one efficient unit Alongside insulation, the other two key ingredients of a warm, dry and healthy home are ventilation and heating — the recipe for a comfortable and cozy winter Unfortunately, many products on the market today perform only one of these functions — ventilation units dehumidify but fail to heat the home in a cost effective manner, while heat pumps
excel at providing warmth but recirculate air inside the home. Now innovative heating company Rinnai have teamed up with local experts Plumbing and Heating to bring new

technology to the market — a range of superbly efficient gas powered heaters which outgun heat pumps in terms of swift, efficient warmth, while drawing fresh air from outside the home. Rinnai’s Energy Saver heaters carry the coveted Asthma Foundation seal of approval because the air they bring into the home is fresh and free of irritants. With a double flue venting exhaust gases outside at the same time, they expel the odour and the moisture of gas combustion, leaving only the stunning amount of heat only gas can provide. With a faster warm-up time than a heat pump, these quiet and efficient units are cost effective too — a thermostatic control makes them fully automatic, saving on
energy bills at a time when power prices are very much in the public eye. For those already equipped with gas cookers and califont hot water, a Rinnai Energy Saver is the perfect heating choice. Dargaville locals N and C Beazley certainly agree. “The Rinnai 557 heats our 250-squaremetre house quickly, quietly and efficiently. The temperature and timing controls are simple to use. We’ve set them to automatic and don’t need to think about them again until spring!” Talk to Plumbing and Heating about your options for healthy, cozy warmth this winter — this new innovation may be just what you need. Warm your home faster than a heat pump A gas-fired Rinnai Energy Saver heats your home so quickly, it’s like magic. Easily connected to either a fixed line natural gas or LPG cylinder supply, the Energy Saver is so fast and efficient it can heat the room quicker than a heat pump of the same output. Turn on a Rinnai Energy Saver now and you’ll be amazed at how swiftly it turns your home into a comfortable, snuggly, warm nest. • Approved by the Sensitive Choice program of the Asthma Foundation* • Draws in external air to maintain air quality in the home • Comes with a 2 year warranty For more information on Energy Savers visit rinnai.co.nz/heaters *The Energy Saver maintains air quality by drawing air for combustion from outside.
