At 10am last Sunday, families, individuals and their dogs met at Mangawhai Heads beach, forming a gigantic SOS symbol on the sand. They voiced their determination to oppose resource consents for further extensive sand mining from the seabed and foreshore of the east coast, Mangawhai to Pākiri. “Thirty-one years ago, during the big dig, Mangawhai found its pride,” said event organiser Ken Rayward. “What people did then, they did for future generations. What we are doing here today is also for future generations.” As well as Ken, other speakers addressing the crowd included representatives of Friends of Pākiri and Greenpeace Aotearoa, alongside

Kaipara mayor Jason Smith and television personality and actor Jacqui Brown. Mayor Smith highlighted the importance of curbing erosion along the east coast and preserving the habitat of the fairy tern, the rarest bird in New Zealand. He drew attention to the fact that the Kaipara District Council would make a formal submission against granting the two remaining resource consents sought by McCallum Brothers to mine sand from the embayment. “In a climate change future, if the distal spit protecting the harbour disappears, then that ocean will be in Mangawhai. That is hugely problematic,” said the mayor. He has worked with the council during the past term to formalise climate change response strategies across the district.

One resource consent has been denied already, with two more to be heard in the coming weeks by an Auckland Council committee. The current situation sees sand mining operators utilising an Auckland-based resource consent, as the border with the super city lies just two kilometres from the site of Sunday’s protest. However, the environmental impact of extensive sand mining is felt along the entire east coast embayment, with visible erosion behind protestors at the heads on Sunday. Ken Rayward, Mayor Smith and supporters of an end to sand mining there say that ‘people power’ and a wider awareness of the ecological issues caused by extensive sand mining are key to a more ecologically sustainable future for the eastern shore. ¢

Pupils trimmed branches, cut roots, removed debris from the track, and did a safety check by identifying and eliminating hazards along the cycleway. The park is a possible location for DHS to run a chainsaw course to educate students about creating safer tracks — the date is yet to be confirmed. “Sadie from Time To has done a great job getting it up and running and is a fantastic resource for locals and holidaymakers to enjoy,” deputy principal Angela Troath says.

Museum seeks loan forgiveness

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Mayor Jason Smith and Awards and Grants Committee chair Peter Wethey presided over a ceremony honouring community and environmental leaders last week.

The Kaipara District Council has been approached by the Mangawhai Museum and Historical Society to forgive loans totalling $100,000, dating back to the construction of this local asset.

p Award winners (left to right) John Bishop, Shane Gould, Phil Godfrey, Allan Mortensen, Shaun Holland and Graham Taylor with Mayor Jason Smith

Shane Gould was belatedly but deservedly granted the 2021 Citizen’s Award before 2022’s recipients took the stage. The first award went to John and Margaret Bishop, for their work in many areas of Dargaville society, from the local combined churches food bank to a recent upgrade of the hospital gardens. Phil Godfrey was awarded for his longterm work with community radio station Big River FM. The radio stalwart has put in a quarter-century behind the microphone and, as a board member, taking care of the details of running the popular local station. The third recipient was Allan Mortensen, founder of this publication. He was celebrated in this instance for his tireless work in the community arts, local tourism and business promotion, and his

ongoing involvement in the Dargaville Racecourse development, a plan to bring affordable and ample housing to the west Kaipara. Finally, Graham Taylor of Paparoa was awarded for his long and successful record of service to the town of Paparoa, a municipality which he has worked hard to promote and improve for four decades. Well-wishers insisted that the ‘village in the valley’ would not be the same without his enthusiasm and commitment. The Environmental Award for 2022 was granted to Shaun Holland for his work in pest eradication on the Kaipara Harbour’s peninsulas. The recipient of a recent grant to continue this work, Pest Free Peninsulas Kaipara, is featured elsewhere in this edition with the full story of how they will turn this funding windfall into a boost for nature. ¢

Citizens are being encouraged to come forward and stand for the mayoralty and a seat at the council table, with elections coming in 12 weeks.

Road refurbishment report positive

Funding windfall for pest busters

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Autumn has proven to be a good season for road repair, with the Northern Transport Alliance hitting its targets for unsealed road refurbishment Kaipara-wide.

Since 2017, Pest Free Peninsulas Kaipara has been working toward the establishment of mainland islands to protect native species, and have won a Kaipara environmental award for their work in 2021 and 2022.

The busy autumn season saw the road builders reach a significant milestone, with $2.5 million worth of physical work completed. This equates to 134 kilometres of refurbished unsealed roads and secures the second tranche of funding from the government’s Infrastructure Reference Group to continue improving local roads. Key p Graders shaped the newly imported aggregate on Pukehuia Road, just one part of a major project to to the success of the season was a refurbish the unsealed roading network change in the weather. “April brought with it more consistent, out. The group has now secured significant assistance for trapping on the Hukatere and Matakohe peninsulas, with $102,622 of Community Pest Control Area funding boosting the cause. The Pest Free Peninsulas Kaipara (PFPK) team is confident that this grant will allow them to eradicate even more introduced predators, building on a track record which has seen more than 2,800 possums culled in 2021 alone. “The focus is on community trapping with a strong focus on the defendable unique environments associated with Kaipara Moana peninsula habitats,” says PFPK coordinator Shaun Holland. “The project started on the Pahi peninsula and has grown over five years to include five local peninsulas; Hukatere, Matakohe, Petley, Pahi and Te Pahi, as well as the wider Paparoa township.” Fourteen dedicated team members cover the expansive 4,047ha catchment, assisted by enthusiastic local landowners keen to cut back on introduced species such as rats, stoats

and possums. The prominence of PFPK was boosted with a big win in the pest control category of the Northland Regional Council Environment Awards, as well as their recent Kaipara awards victory. “Pest Free Peninsulas’ focus is to try and make trapping easy for individual landowners and residents by providing a library of free traps, rat bait and, if required, community trappers to help mentor or guide them,” says Shaun. “It’s in the hope that by removing barriers and getting the community thinking about conservation, we can get more people in our community trapping and collectively make a difference.” ¢

Rockquest regional heat finalists

Dargaville High School’s rock band Men in Boots made it through to the regional heats for the Smokefree Rockquest and is currently writing an original song and video to be submitted digitally to the competition.

Kaipara libraries will no longer charge fines on overdue items, following confirmation of a new policy by the elected members of the Kaipara District Council.

“We competed last year and got through to regionals, and we thought why stop — we are the best. This year was totally different because we had new band members,” says lead vocalist and songwriter Kohatu Donovan. p Kaipara library staff welcome a new initiative which has seen costs and fees slashed to make reading more accessible

Charges on DVD rentals have also been removed in a push to make library services more accessible to lowincome families, following the success of late-fee abolition schemes in many other communities. “We’re so proud to be joining the many, many other libraries across Aotearoa going fines-free,” says library manager Lisa Salter. “We’ve seen research that shows removing fines increases library membership, resulting in better literacy. That’s music to a librarian’s ears, as Kaipara libraries are for everyone.” There are currently five libraries in the Kaipara District. The Dargaville library

is the only local library service run by paid staff, but four community libraries at Paparoa, Kaiwaka, Maungatūroto, and Mangawhai are run by volunteers. A decade-long library strategy was adopted by the council recently, paving the way forward for a modern library service in Kaipara. Lisa does ask library users to consider the person next in line for that new offthe-press bestseller. “There are no more penalties for taking a little longer to bring items back. If you lose or damage a book, you have borrowed, or for whatever reason you decide not to return one, you will still need to pay a replacement cost.” ¢

Significant natural areas back in discussion

Dargaville Little Theatre’s Act One theatre classes for young people have wrapped up with a performance of short works showcasing the talents of 2022’s students.

The exposure draft for the government’s forthcoming National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity has been discussed by the Kaipara District Council.

p The young cast of Robin Hood or perhaps Little Red Riding Hood take a bow as Act One classes for the year come to a close

A packed house of relatives and friends came to support the junior thespians in their graduation performance, applauding the work put into script, costume, set design and rehearsing a collection of bitesized plays. “This is the first time for a while that we have been able to offer Act One classes, and they have been well received,” says theatre spokesperson Deborah Steele. “Normally, when the theatre has multiple shows in a year, it can be difficult to find the time and the tutors to fit in classes, but they are very rewarding.” The youngsters were excited to present the fruits of their labours for the past

two terms to their parents and friends. The show comprised everything from sophisticated short skits with a twist in the tale to a mixed-up retelling of Robin Hood and Little Red Riding Hood in which the wolf, Red, and Robin’s merry men joined forces to vanquish the Sheriff of Nottingham. The youngest cast member was eight years old, with the oldest attending high school. When asked about the best part of taking acting classes with local tutors, students replied that they had found new confidence, sharpened up their skills, had fun with their friends and learned a lot along the way. ¢

On Saturday, July 30, Ruawai College will host its annual open day, a chance for families and students to experience what learning is like at the progressive west Kaipara school. Situated central to Dargaville and Matakohe, Ruawai College is well known and celebrated for its new innovative curriculum. Combining educational innovation and a parklike setting amid farmland, the school is proud to encapsulate many modern amenities and celebrate its place in the harbourside, rural heartland of the district. “At Ruawai College, students are both listened to and included in the decision-making process around their own individual learning needs and wants,” says assistant principal Jay Warren. “The school has completely redesigned the ‘how’ in education. How learning content is delivered. How students access teaching and learning. How teachers and students interact. How the school engages with the community and how in this instance, the school can engage with prospective students.” Recognising that much of their community is rural and has working hours that do not suit attending open days during the working day, Ruawai College has shifted to accommodate community needs, say the faculty. The open day event will be a familyfocussed event for the whole community, catering for all ages. As well as the opportunity to explore the academic

Fire brigade report u by our Dargaville Fire Brigade correspondent

June was a busy month for Dargaville’s firefighters, as wild weather combined with a series of medical emergencies and motor accidents kept the volunteers busy. Fires extinguished this month include a single house fire, a rubbish fire, a tree fire, a burning car and several alarm activations, which thankfully did not result in a blaze. The weather took its toll with rain and high winds toppling power lines for one call-out, while damage wreaked by winter storms saw firefighters responding to two more. Five motor vehicle accidents were serious enough to require the Authorised Distributors and Service Agents for Diesel Industrial Motors, Pumps and Generators Designed for Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Rural applications.

attendance of firefighters, prompting the chief fire officer and the volunteer brigade members to issue a seasonal warning. Please, check your tyres and vehicle’s brakes and suspension before heading out on wet roads this winter. It leads on to one last winter message from our local firefighters; take care when cleaning out ashes from your home fireplace. Always use metal tools and a metal bucket as plastic is flammable. That also means you should never use a vacuum cleaner to clear out the fireplace, as even small cinders and ashes can set fire to the paper filters and plastic internals of these machines, even if they are bagless. The fire brigade is still in search of new volunteers, so please consider stepping up to help in your community. A newspaper from ‘down the line’ in Auckland captured the moment when, 150 years ago this year, Joseph Dargaville purchased the land he would use to found his town. The Daily Southern Cross reported on July 15 1872 that a large gathering of Māori dignitaries met with colonial magnates keen to purchase land in the Kauri Coast region. ‘The meeting was attended by chieftains from Hokianga, Mahurangi, Kaipara and this district (Auckland),’ reported a local correspondent, who would have sent his despatch south to Patumahoe, home of the Southern Cross and its editor William Brown. CALL THE RIGHT TEAM Make the right call on DIY u by Andy Bryenton

There’s pride in a job well done when you complete a DIY task, but if you add up the time, the cost and the potential risk, it might just be better to let the professionals handle it all. We’re used to thinking of the outdoors, the sports field and the workplace as core areas to take care, and avoid accidents, but there’s a one in 13 chance that a serious injury could befall you while taking care of DIY tasks in and around the home. That figure has gone up thanks to the prevalence of home-based work and learning during the era of Covid, says a representative from the Accident Compensation Corporation. In 2019 more than 1.3 million injuries occurred on the injured person’s own property, with gardening and DIY activities accounting for 96,782 of those claims. “Most injuries that occur around the home can be easily prevented by simply slowing down and stopping to assess p the risks,” says ACC’s head of injury prevention, Isaac Carlson. “For example, with many people setting up home offices and learning areas, there might be more power cords in new places around the house. Take some time to become aware of potential tripping hazards.”

enthusiasts, with the single greatest risk being climbing a ladder, the most common source of injuries. Age is also a factor, with the 65–75-year-old demographic suffering DIY accidents at a rate double that of those in their 20s and 30s. It seems that power tools are the next biggest culprit, with doctors warning those who take up tools for a one-off job around the home to carefully read the instructions. Unlike professional builders and renovators, home users may not receive proper training to safely use powerful saws, drills and nail guns, leading to mistakes. The angle grinder, circular saw and chainsaw are the most dangerous tools, according to accident records. Working in high places, with powerful tools and with fragile materials all contribute to the more than The third biggest home-based 19,000 annual DIY accidents, which make calling the injury involved the cringe-inducing pros a safer option ‘involuntary contact with an operational It’s predominantly handymen, rather lawn mower’. Medical staff urge everyone than handywomen, who suffer an injury using one of these machines, whether which require medical care while working ride-on or manually pushed, to wear around the house. Four out of every five covered shoes and to stop the engine accidents of this kind involved male DIY before clearing blockages of the blades.

Most of us are careful and observe all the precautions when doing a spot of DIY around the house and yard, but this litany of dangers does beg the question; why do it at all? There is, of course, a certain satisfaction in learning a new skill. However, if the cost of buying tools and equipment exceeds that of calling in the professionals, or if your time is better spent relaxing or in productive work, then there’s less risk and less fuss in simply picking up the phone. ¢

A new company promoting better health with natural vitamins is going strong in Dargaville, delivering a timely preventative for winter ills. Paula and Maraea Sunnex and Maraea’s partner Lindsay Bryers have established Manawa-Ora, a local firm with a mission to help people boost their immunity with the power of vitamins C and E. The restorative properties of these vitamins are well known, but what makes Manawa-Ora’s drinkable supplement superior is its ability to get that goodness to where it needs to go inside the body. “We began our journey when we met with acclaimed herbalist Gregor Robinson and experienced the effectiveness of liposomal vitamin C first-hand,” said Paula and Maraea. “Then Covid came along, and our supply of the pre-made supplement was disrupted due to lockdowns. Rather than give up, we took up the challenge to make our own.” Vitamins C and E are known preventatives, boosting the immune system and the body’s energy levels. The special thing about Manawa-Ora is that it encapsulates the vitamins and delivers them right to the body’s cells

Costly reduced emissions u by Amy Fifita

Northland Dairy Development Trust hosted farmers at its Northland Agricultural Research Farm last month to present its findings for the first year of its four-year Future Farm Systems study. NARF is investigating how alternative pastures and emissions reduction are viable and cost-effective for farmers. Agriculturalists nationwide attended the field day to review the first year of the on-farm trials. “The high cost of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 2050 targets by farm system changes alone has also validated what the modelling showed,” says NDDT coordinator Kim Robinson. The low-emission farm system had poor results. It showed that farmers modelling this type of system would have significant reductions in productivity and income generation. A few changes have been made on the low emission farm to help combat this. “There are a few small adjustments which should increase the profitability slightly. However, it is likely to remain a large drop in profit to meet the government emissions targets without other technologies,” Kim says. Temperatures are predicted to rise in the future. The popular use of perennial ryegrass, which produced poor growth rates above 25 degrees Celsius on the research farm, could be reduced. “We are only one year into a four-year trial but have some useful learnings already. These include the difficulty

in establishing and maintaining alternatives to ryegrass, how quickly the clover content increases when nitrogen fertiliser is removed from the system and how resilient the kikuyu and ryegrass pasture system is,” Kim says. The current farm system had the highest of 1,284 kilograms of milk production a hectare and 409kgMS a cow. It was followed by the alternative farm system with 1,213kgMS a hectare and 397kgMS each cow. Coming in last was the low emission farm with a minimal 794kgMS a hectare which was expected due to a lower stock rate and 370kgMS a cow. The alternative pasture s had higher productivity in milk production until summer. There was a significant drop in production at the low emissions farm, and the stock did not peak well due to p Chris Boom, NARF science manager, presenting findings at the NDDT field days on the low emissions farmlet lower protein levels. This farm grew more grass than anticipated with more kilogram of product on the low emission behind at $4,786, with a significant farm took the team by surprise with the comparison to the low emissions farm clover growth. of $3,021. It was calculated from Using the Overseer scientific model, 38 per cent drop in milk production. A dog’s tail …

So readas, the farm propity was a bit ofa sad place after that footy game ona TV ina woolshed. Boss an’ his gerlfren’ Sharlene had sum mates over for sum bears and whines ana barbie, but usally after a test game they all wot tha Boss calls ‘happy as Larry’, witch puzzils me ‘cos we don’t no any Larrys eh? But no, everone was pritty quiet when the ref blew the last wissle an’ I reckin his mates Allin an’ Mike was havin’ a bit ofa weep as well. But Sharlene was a bit stroppy an’ sez the rugby rules killed the game. “How kin we play with 13 men deah wen they Irish got 15?” she sed. Boss just hada sniff, but nek day at smoko he hada look ata kattil stop newspapa. An’ give it to Sharlene to read. “Says here that England coach Eddie Jones warned rugby was spiralling ‘out of control’ on the use of red and yellow cards, gobsmacked after New Zealand were shown two yellow cards as well as Ta’avao’s red in Dunedin, and the game descended into chaos.” “I rekin Pine Tree Meads and sum of his mates wood be tearing there hair out at the modern world rugby rules,” seda Boss then. “No more good argy stuff ina scrum eh?

“Yep, deah,” Sharlene read on. “The game is torn between player welfare and common sense. That Ian Foster says his side made too many handling errors.” So Boss poured anuther cuppatees. “Well he got that right, they droppin’ balls all over, and that Bodin Barrit shooda kept running, but he kicked it insted. We need some more seasined players though for the third test.” But then he was lookin’ atta papa and said: “Hey, sum good news.” And Sharlene read again. “New Zealand shouldn’t be able to grow avocados, but in 10 years, sales have hit $240 million and has a target of $1 billion by 2040. Growers can produce about 40,000 tonnes a year.” Now I get it, readas. Boss an’ Sharlene bin expyminting with stuff ona farm, an’ gonna plant peanuts near the avicado orchid near his granpa’s old homested ona home farm. “High-value markets, like Thailand and Korea, really like our avocados,” read Sharlene. “There ya go deah, world duzzint just spin roun’ footy. I wuz more wurried about croinyvirus for a wile, but I see the guvmint computer all screwed up the figgers, so what’s happinin’ is anyone’s guess.”

Boss giva grunt then. “Ya right, Deah. A bita sunshines come out too fer a change. Let’s stroll over an’ have peak ata avos. You to, Dog. No use cryin’ ova spilt milk.” That’s fine readas, but I can’t figger — I wassint cryin’ and the milk thing? The dairy runoff is a mile away over the paddicks. An’ who is Larry? But thatsa Boss eh? Cheers — Billy ¢
