Tinopai School fire sparks warning u by Ann Morgan

“The school has been fine for all these years, and all of a sudden there was an electrical fire at the meter box,” said Tinopai’s acting fire chief, Allan Crabb. “It was brilliant working with the other brigades, excellent teamwork and fantastic to save the building. The Ruawai brigade told me this was about their eighth electrical fire they have attended recently.” The meter box had totally melted out at the school and the power board were out that afternoon. The school was up and running again the next day.
The New Zealand Fire Service recommends that old wiring and connections be checked in all buildings, particularly as colder weather causes an increase in power drains. “The smart meter boxes have been installed widely across the country, and there have been a few fires involving them. At this point the fire service is monitoring them in all regions,” said national manager of fire investigation Peter Wilding. “Our key source of information is from members of the public. Tighter controls on swamp kauri
Grand opening for agricultural hub
u by Ayla Miller
Chilly winter weather didn’t dampen the spirits of farmers on the hunt for a bargain at Farm Shop’s grand opening, located between town and country on the corner of Jervois and Grey Street.
Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy has moved to strengthen rules regarding the swamp kauri trade, during a visit to Nelson’s Kaihu Kauri.
p Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy has announced a tightening of rules surrounding swamp kauri
The changes aim to improve transparency, clarity and enforcement controls. Mr Guy rejects claims that loopholes have been found in previous rules and says he is confident that they are operating as they should. “I’ve asked the MPI to have a good look at the Forest Act to make sure it’s operating as it should be and I’m comfortable that it is,” he said. “I believe MPI do a good job and enforce the law appropriately. These changes will however increase information flow and improve how we manage an industry that is important to the Northland economy. “There has been good engagement from local operators who are keen to
ensure their extraction, milling and export practises are more transparent. They realise the industry is worth at least $25 million to the wider Northland economy and provides many jobs.” The changes now mean that 100 percent of all products to be exported, will be notified by operators and MPI will inspect them to ensure they are legal. MPI will work with customs to ensure any items not complying with the act will not leave the country. A fact sheet will also be supplied to ensure operators, exporters and importers understand the Forest Act as well as greater surveillance of online trade sites to ensure complete compliance. ¢

p Farm Shop is an agricultural hub offering machinery, agrichemical expertise and much more
A steady stream of customers made their way through the doors on opening day, making the most of the opening specials and giveaways. Part of this newly combined hub was once known as Kaipara Agri centre, a locally owned and operated business specialising in oil, lubricants, parts, tractor maintenance and tools. Now Primehort’s Spray Shop has been incorporated under the name Farm Shop, creating a one stop shop for rural requirements, offering farmers chemical and pest control expertise as well. “We’re hoping that the community recognises this is the place to go for machinery and agrichemicals,” says owner Mike Wearmouth.
“Our mission is to ensure our customers keep enjoying their livelihood.” They also offer locally designed and built bale feeders and tandem trailers as well as fertiliser spreaders, post drivers, hay mowers and water blasters. ¢

A year since the store reopened, manager Mandy Wood celebrated by giving her customers another day to peruse the racks and pick up a good deal. July 6 was the first Monday the store has been open and Mandy says there was a lot of interest. “There was a really good turn out.” Business is picking up for the store and there has already been an significant increase in sales in the first week. The shop is run by a group of 12 volunteers who assist in different parts of the store, from sorting clothes to working behind the counter. “Our aim is to assist people in need and to make a difference. Warm clothing and bedding are
especially popular this time of year,” she says. The team are putting clothes out daily and are always looking for more donations, particularly homeware. Donated goods are collected and sorted before being put on the racks. Surplus clothes and electronics are sent to Whangarei to be sold. “We have a ‘no waste’ ethic and anything that can’t be sold in Whangarei then goes to the islands and then onto the rag merchants.” Funds raised from the sale of goods goes towards contributing to the national food bank as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation programmes and other Salvation Army services around Northland. ¢

Postal delivery ‘no different’
Dangerous trees removed
u by Ayla Miller
u by Ann Morgan
The first of July marked the beginning of New Zealand Post’s new three day delivery schedule in major towns and cities, however it is business as usual in the Kaipara region.
Douglas Logging have recently donated two days of labour and heavy machinery, to remove the old macrocarpa trees off the top hill above Red Hill Cemetery. The trees were in danger of falling onto the grave sites below.
p The trees above Red Hill cemetery have been removed for safety thanks to help from Douglas Logging
Rural addresses, including small towns such as Dargaville, will still see mail delivered six days a week, whereas those in larger urban areas will have their standard mail delivery reduced to three days. Retail officer at the Dargaville PostShop Sandra Snooks says there is no change to the way they will manage their mail. “It will make no difference to us here at the PostShop, as we have PO boxes which will continue to see mail delivered six days a week — Monday to Saturday.” New Zealand Post’s Mail and Communications Chief Operating Officer
Ashley Smout says the three day a week deliveries will roll out to smaller centres over the next two years and believes customers will see very little difference in service. New Zealand Post will continue aiming to deliver 95 percent of mail within three working days. With email’s rising in popularity, the demand for a daily postal service has diminished, meaning posties deliver half the amount of mail they once did. Kaipara residents can check updates regarding mail deliveries on www. nzpost.co.nz or by enquiring on 0800 501 501. ¢
“This was an amazing gift to the community,” said Des Subritzky. “It was a massive job and there’s no way we could have otherwise accomplished the task. It looks great up there now.” The trees have been stacked at the top of the hill and are working as a windbreak, they will naturally rot down over time and become food for the forest. With the help of local resident Leith McKenzie, hundreds of native trees and shrubs have now been planted. Members of the community have been planting and Kaipara District Council staff came and helped for a day. “The plants were donated by members of the public and the KDC with Leith kindly providing many of them

himself. He has been very dedicated with his knowledge of native bush and has been extremely helpful knowing which plants are best in which area,” said Des. They have also started clearing out the old gum diggers path on the side of the hill which the gumdiggers used to get to the gum field and down to Glinks Gully. Clearing it will reopen a piece of local history for the area. “The plan is to have a seat at the top of the hill for people to sit and enjoy the view. You can see toward Dargaville, across to Tokatoka, down the harbour past Ruawai, and way down the Kaipara Harbour and the shore further down. There is a spectacular view from up there.” ¢

It is about the things we do not see behind the walls that can be the issue.”
ORT’s colourful production of the story created by Reverend Charles Dodgson, a 19th century mathematician, logician, and lecturer at Oxford, has one weekend left to run and it is perfect school holiday entertainment. Rev. Dodgson first created the story on the spur of the moment for 10 year old Alice Liddell who later pleaded with him to commit the story to paper. Kumara campaigns for national vegetable
Keeping old traditions alive
u by Ayla Miller

The humble kumara is in the running for the prestigious title of National Vegetable of New Zealand, competing against the beetroot.
The Dargaville Dalmatian Tamburica Orchestra are looking for keen new musicians to keep the tradition alive.
Kaipara Kumara managing director, Anthony Blundell says, “it’s pretty obvious that kumara should be the official national vegetable of New Zealand.” “It has such a long history of cultivation here. The early Maori settlers originally brought kumara to New Zealand over one thousand years ago. It’s also an incredibly versatile vegetable and something that most people enjoy eating — I don’t know many that would say no to kumara, whether it is roasted, mashed, steamed or fried!” The beetroot has support from LeaderBrand, one of New Zealand’s largest fresh vegetable producers and both have online petitions on change. org where people can go to support their favourite vegetable. Warren Suckling or ‘Ernie the Kumara King’, says that he will be supporting the campaign. “I think it’s a really important vegetable. It is the number one vegetable in a hangi. I can’t imagine a hangi without kumara,” he says. People have the chance to vote for their favourite until the end of The Food Show in Auckland on August 2 where LeaderBrand and Kaipara Kumara will be

People don’t have to belong to the club and we aren’t looking at charging,
it will be a labour of love.” he says. “They are unique instruments and the last full 14 piece traditional Dalmatian Orchestra in the Southern Hemisphere, that we know of. Picture the scenario. It’s 3am, there’s a storm raging outside, the family are all over for the holidays, and suddenly the lights go out. Or perhaps you’re just about to leave for a weekend away, and notice that there’s a crack in an easily accessible window. If the television’s only showing static, the toilet’s backed up, the stove is cold and the fridge is hot — that’s the time to turn to a whole super team of local professionals who can swing into action and fix whatever’s broken around your home or farm. There are even more specific disasters which can befall a working farmstead — but never fear, as even tussles with milking machinery, chillers, punctured tractor tyres and wheezing diesels can be seen to in

a jiffy by folks from just around the corner. The big message here is all about the importance of keeping it local, too. We can rely on our local electricians, plumbers, roofers, mechanics and glaziers (and more) to be there for us in an emergency. If we don’t support local business in the good times, who will be there for us in the bad? To keep these dedicated folks within easy reach, clip the directory overleaf and pin it up near your phone, or perhaps on your fridge. No matter what’s wrong, they can help make it work again! ¢

Listening to their constituency
FARMERS!
u by Andy Bryenton
Honda quad bikes have been a driving force in rural New Zealand for decades, with a similar staying power as the venerable Massey Ferguson tractor and the Toyota Hilux when it comes to onfarm popularity. That’s not a position which can be kept by standing still, and Honda are careful when designing a new machine to keep the best of the old and incorporate those new little tweaks and changes which most benefit their core market. In an era when many of the ATVs coming into the country seem to have been designed for multiple purposes, hunting and leisure as well as farming. The TRX 500 then, is a chip off the ‘old school’ block. Not in terms of its underpinning technology, for the 500cc Honda is fully equipped with electronic fuel injection for a power boost over the old model, and electric-manual gear selection system as used in modern sports cars. It’s in the area of design and robust construction that Honda have listened to their farming constituency, incorporating features for improved toughness and upping the TRX 500’s capacity for hard work. This is not a quad bike geared toward leisurely trail rides in the country. It’s a farming tool first and foremost, as evidenced by the use of a swing-arm fixed rear axle. Why is this indicative of the Honda’s farming focus? Well, an independent suspension system in back

would make more sense for busting the trails at high speeds. But this setup means you can tow more and lug more without bottoming out in the mud. It also means less body roll on the steep bits that’s where the TRX 500 is quite at home, tackling New Zealand’s often far from flat pasturelands with a load on. Honda’s focus on farming even goes as far as extra guards to keep that ever
present mud out of the moving parts, and a rear rack that is the perfect size for that other vital farming essential, the dog. An economical 500 cc configured with the signature Honda low centre of gravity provides enough power for any day’s work on the land, while still delivering in the vicinity of 100km to a single tank of gas. ¢

TeRehia Waata
16th February 1956 - 17th July 2005 Ten years have now gone by my friend since that fateful morning. I still catch myself wanting to give you a call to tell you about silly things that happened in my day, to share a laugh, or to crow over small achievements. I start to fear that my memories of you will fade, or that a day will pass without me having thought of you. Silly I know, because you’ll still love me regardless. The pain is starting to ease I guess, although I sometimes have my moments. Usually when I want to rage against trespass or injustice or when the burden gets too heavy to bear alone. During these times I often see the messages of strength you send to help me through - the rainbow in a bright blue sky, the bird soaring overhead or calling through the inky night. I smile or cry, usually both, and it reminds me of the strength you instilled in us all. So, I dust myself off and remember that I’ll always be my mother’s daughter… forever and always my mother’s daughter. When I was young that was something I never wanted to be. Now that I’m older and a little wiser, I know that you were right all along. You were my best mate, just like you said you would be. I still miss you my mum. Forever and always your loving daughter. Missy.
