Across the road from Selwyn Park, 15 Onslow Street, Dargaville, is their new home which is rich in character. It was the Kauri Bakery set up by the Smith family in 1933 and at one point it supplied bread for the whole of Northland. The owner, Emil, bought the 80 year building in 2004 and has kept some bakery features in tact. He has installed a spiral staircase but has left an original step and the dough table will now be used for circus tricks. “It’s about new beginnings,” says community circus teacher, Jo Carvalho, adding that they have outgrown the space in Parenga Street. He says the new building will have better storage capacity and being next to the swimming pool, skatepark and Selwyn Park is an advantage giving them greater visibility. “Everyone is welcome to drop in and see what we’re all about, and it’s not just about clowns and juggling, we do much more than that.” The last class at Parenga Street was the Art of Pole taught by Amy Richardson-Impey and classes will begin at Onslow Street on July 31. ¢

Around 30 performers took part and for some, it was their first time performing. Acting tutor, Deborah Steele, wrote an original script for the senior kids; a comedy combining shakespearean dialogue with modern teenage angst. The junior class performed in a fairytale spoof with the six actors performing beyond their years. Dance tutor, Julianne Parkinson, taught an adult and children’s class some hip hop dance moves and DLT Glee club co-ordinator, Anna Marie Cutts, guided her members to sing two modern day melodies. Act One classes will resume in 2014, contact Deborah, 021 0227 3055, to register your interest.

Parents improve computer literacy  by Rose Rees-Owen

A group of 10 parents, who have children enrolled at Selwyn Park Primary School, graduated from the Computers in Homes initiative.

 Excited about graduation, back row from left: Makeleta Ma’ake, Sue Kini (Computers in Homes Coordinator), Nikki Williams, Vern Stevens (Principal), Tara Turner, Eileen Keukelaar and Cossalina Donovan.

After going through 20 hours of computer training, parents received their own computers to take home as well as a subsidised 12 month internet connection and technical support. “By training Mums and Dads in how to use the computer, they in turn use that knowledge to help their children when they get their computers home,” says Northland regional co-ordinator, Sue Kini. The curriculum includes cyber safety as well as learning how to use Skype, Facebook, Google, email and general computer skills — and was taught by trainer, Deb Green. “It’s a good programme, and I will share what I’ve been taught with my children and other whanau members,” says graduate, Alaina Ashby. Graduate, Cossalina Donovan, says the course has been beneficial for both herself and her children. “I have four kids who come here so it’s really going to help with their learning.” The initiative is aimed to reach parents who have children enrolled in low decile schools and do not own a computer.

Ms Kini encourages more schools in Kaipara to get involved but there is a limited amount of funding available. It’s estimated that 3,000 families in Northland do not own a computer or have an internet connection. ¢

Vision of the Owl June 2013  by Grey Power

Reading this column you will become aware that Grey Power is a very active non political party, non sectarian organisation dedicated at looking after the interests of all New Zealanders. Nationwide we have over 60,000 members which is more than the combined political parties, therefore we are able to lobby successfully with central and local government. Because of Grey Power’s efforts over the years society has gained many benefits as unfair issues are resolved. At the present time the various Grey Power Federation committees are addressing many issues including; The high cost of electricity, rates, health insurance increases, Accident Compensation Corporation, Rest Homes, Law and Order, Superannuation, the Consumer Price Index to name a few. New members are needed to “increase the power.” Why not join Kaipara Grey Power Association, come to the meetings and air your concerns. Among matters raised at our recent meeting were the crossing at Victoria St end of

Gladstone St and concerns about the possible site plan of the Countdown building. Praises were “sung” of wonderful treatment received at Whangarei Hospital. We normally have a guest speaker and this month Len Lulich gave us an interesting, informative and enjoyable talk about a stay in Croatia. Financial members have a free Accidental insurance $2,000 cover supplied by AIL Insurance. Members receive a Quarterly Magazine from our Federation plus our association’s short newsletter bimonthly. For further information you may contact our President June Klenner 09 439 1736 or visit the Federation on www.greypower.nz.

Ruawai’s musical ambassador to Olympic capital  by Andy Bryenton

The temperature difference between sunny Rio de Janeiro and wintery Ruawai at this time of year is almost as much of a shock as the difference in population, language and surroundings — just ask recently returned Kaipara ‘ambassador’, Tom Gomes. But the accomplished musician and hair stylist says it’s good to be back home, after a whirlwind tour of the nation of his birth, Brazil. It was a chance to visit relatives and re-visit places from his days growing up in the South American metropolis by the sea, but there was a greater purpose for his journey as well. While most Ruawai folk know Tom as their local hairdresser, he is also a musician with a style which blends

Brazilian rhythm with modern electronic production techniques. His unique style has seen him play some of New Zealand’s most famous night spots, and while in Rio he collaborated with a select group of other Brazilian musos to create a soundtrack for the forthcoming Olympic celebrations there. In a nation famous for great music and parties, the Ruawai local’s work with his Brazilian contemporaries is sure to show the flavour of New Zealand. ¢

HISTORIC

NORTHERN WAIROA Hotel & Restaurant Est. 1878

Now Open!

Over a Century of 'local flavour' When the historic Northern Wairoa Hotel was first established, it was more than just a place to gather for a cold pint of ale after a hard day's work. As one of the core buildings of the fledgling settlement of Dargaville the hotel catered to traders, travellers, new immigrants, homesteaders in from the 'back blocks' to top up on supplies - a whole pageant of colourful characters who needed, above all else, hot and hearty food to satisfy their hunger. After all, some of these pioneers may have just arrive by sailing ship from England, or slogged through days of muddy trails from the then-tiny outpost of Auckland. After eating rations on the journey, there was nothing so welcoming as the smell of a real honest-to-goodness dinner wafting through those big double doors. Now, with renovations undertaken and a new kitchen hardware on line (thanks to the efforts of Dargaville gasfitters the Plumbing and Heating Centre) a new menu has been launched, a top chef has been brought on board and the restaurant at the Northern Wairoa Hotel is once again the place to tuck in to a delicious lunch or dinner. Chef Chris, formerly of noted Auckland seafood restaurant Swashbucklers, welcomes guests to the hotel for two services a day, starting with a topvalue ten dollar lunch from 11.30 am, and finishing off with a gourmet dinner selection, (including a musttry seafood platter) from 5.30pm. Drop by soon and sample the delights of a proper old-fashioned meal in the surroundings of Dargaville's most famous old historic pub - you'll soon see why guests in the 1800s travelled from halfway around the world to get here!

Meat industry date for MP

7

 by Paul Campbell

Sorting stock, hefting meats cuts into chillers and hosing down yards at Dargaville’s meatworks is not usually considered part of a Member of Parliament’s day job.

 Mr Sabin reports for work in the Silver Fern stockyards

But as well as milking cows, digging kumara, or pouring petrol, the activity has been added to the resume of Northland MP, Mike Sabin, as he continues his programme of finding out what are the nuts and bolts of the local economy — the jobs people do. He spent a day at Silver Fern Farms plant in Dargaville, in the yards, the boning and packing rooms and

Name: Address: Phone:

the chillers. “The day started in the chillers packing boxes of cuts into the plate chillers which rapidly cool the cartons of meat,” Mr Sabin said. “I was then into the yards where I helped receive, sort and clean the stock. The plant typically processes 432 animals per day, with the 262 staff working over two shifts.

“The plant is one of the most cost efficient and effective in the group and the innovative approaches, from utilising all parts of the beasts, to a waste-neutral status from their recycling programme shows what can be achieved with a bit of Northland know-how. I was really impressed.” Mr Sabin learned the most significant challenge for the industry is stock procurement, with 300,000 cattle going to the works, but only about 130,000 a year actually processed in Northland plants, with the remaining stock shipped elsewhere. “When you consider that every beast processed in Northland generates about $100 in wages that then goes back into our local economy, you can start to appreciate how advantageous it is to see stock slaughtered locally,” says Mr Sabin. “The challenges in the beef industry are well known and it is clear that the Fonterra co-operative model has been game-changing for dairy farmers and the industry alike in New Zealand, but it still seems a distant possibility for beef producers, which presents an ongoing challenge. “This was another great experience which provided a close-up appreciation

of the meat producing sector in Northland and the importance of this industry to our economy. “Product from this plant in Dargaville not only gets sold domestically, it goes all around the world, including the United States, Europe, China, Taiwan and the Middle East to name a few.” ¢

Be my Guest Bill Guest Farmers of New Zealand

It’s local government election year again. A time when most of us take a few seconds out of our day to think about what box to tick and whom we should elect to govern our local multimillion-dollar government organisation. I suspect for many more time is spent thinking about what they should buy for lunch. People use their democratic choice for a wide range of reasons. Unfortunately, few in our community ever actively engage in government processes and therefore often make choices on limited information, hearsay, and prejudice. Many candidates are successful simply because they are well known within a community or are strong advocates against some issue that resonates across a large number of voters. Whatever the reason for the choices

made the concept of ‘good governance’ is not high on the list for consideration. The issue we face is the stark and fundamental difference between the need for good governance of an organisation and the concept of ‘democratic representation’. In the private sector considerable thought is given to the choice of directors. There is normally a vigorous selection process to ensure the correct level and mix of expertise is present on the Board.

www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be

operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

The farmers came to town  by Rose Rees-Owen

Around 50 farmers attended a calf rearing workshop at the Commercial Hotel in Dargaville run by Beef and Lamb New Zealand as well as DairyNZ. The interactive workshop featured speakers, Dr Bas Schouten, Mike Colhurst from Silver Fern Farms, and local farmer, Peter Bond from Tokatoka who offered practical experience and shared the economics behind his systems. “It’s a chance for farmers to talk about their concerns with with experts like Bas and local farmers,” says organiser from DairyNZ, Simon Sankey. He says the main purpose is to increase efficiency and profitability of calf rearing systems. Topics covered included the importance of having a routine,

hygiene and safety, how to treat and prevent diseases, feeding, and observing. “We’re looking at the whole process right from the paddock through to rearing young stock,” adds Mr Sankey. Farmer, Timothy Hatchard, from Ruawai said he found the workshop helpful. “Things are changing all the time so it’s important to keep up to date and learn new things.” For farmers who didn’t get a chance to attend the workshop, there is information about best calf rearing practices on both DairyNZ and Beef and Lamb’s websites.

Pigs come home to warm welcome  by Andy Bryenton

Ancient strata emerges

13

It was a chilly Friday night, but inside the Dargaville fire station all was warmth and light for 2013’s BNZ ‘dress the piggy’ parade final.

 The wonders of beach combing can be endless and in the case of a recent sojourn on the west coast, Noel Hilliam came across an echo of the ages. Exposed by sand slipping away on a cliff face just 50 metres north of the Baylys Beach entrance is a treasure of the past. “It’s a layer of lignite — ancient kauri forest — and in on top is a white layer of teffra, or volcanic ash,” said Noel. “I sent samples away to a tree ring laboratory and they identified this ash layer as coming from the Taupo eruption in 232 AD.”

www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz The contest was graced by a wealth of creativity and flair this year as businesses and organisations from across the district competed for top porcine honours, in a competition which directly benefits the volunteer firefighters of Dargaville’s brigade. In the tradition of popular television talent quest ‘The X Factor’ the piggy banks were narrowed down to a ‘final three’, with the winner announced to a packed crowd. This year’s most fantastically decorated pig was judged to be the entry from Kaipara Community Health Trust — a porky patient complete with bandages, hospital bed and ‘get well soon’ cards crafted by volunteer James Foster. Health Trust spokesperson Deb Evans was delighted with the win. “We live in a great community and we all support one another,” she said. “Supporting the Fire Brigade was the driving inspiration behind the Hospital themed entry Miss Paracetamol Pig. Everyone’s really got behind the BNZ

ATS

initiative — it’s the equivalent of the ‘indoor section’ for grown-ups at a school calf club day. So many hours of inspiration went into each entry.” The award ceremony was followed up by a trivia quiz, participated in by teams from all over Dargaville. And while this may have been a classic trivial pursuit, there is nothing trivial at all about the cause which the BNZ and the people of Dargaville came together to support. This year marks the centenary of the establishment of the Dargaville Fire Brigade — a volunteer organisation which, over the years, has saved many lives and prevented many disasters. Their big milestone will be celebrated this September, but the boost in funds from both the piggy bank competition, the trivia night, the auction of completed pigs and donations from the public will go a long way toward keeping this vital service strong, ready for when we need it most. ¢

Showtime for theatre

Reporter We are seeking a reporter for the Kaipara Lifestyler.

 by Paul Campbell

Otamatea Repertory Theatre is in the limelight this month, featuring in a new series on TV1. The ORT activities were filmed progressively during 2012 by Greenstone Productions and the resulting six-part documentary series, Showtime, starts on TV1 at 8pm on Wednesday 24th July. The series also features members of an urban-based community theatre group, the Howick Little Theatre. “The series should generate interest in all things theatrical, and hopefully this will benefit theatres throughout New Zealand,” said ORT’s Maura Flower. Meanwhile, the ORT players will open their latest production, ‘Seussical,’ on July 27. ORT’s latest stage extravaganza, Seussical, is based on the timeless characters of Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The musical brings in memorable people and creatures from many of the celebrated American author’s works, including the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, Horton the elephant and many more, woven into a tale about mischief, butter, warfare,

courage and the power of the imagination (among other themes). Geisel was a perfectionist who would sometimes spend over a year crafting a single book, both images and verse. The Otamataea Reper tor y team of talented volunteers have put just as much work into making their rendition of Seussical (a popular Broadway musical, which debuted in 2000, and almost featured Monty Python’s Eric Idle as the Cat in the Hat) a great visual and musical spectacle, with costumes, sets and choreography which would be the envy of many an all-professional theatre company. If any of their previous shows are an indication, tickets will sell out fast,

The position calls for an energetic person who can work unsupervised, is deadline driven, gets on well with a wide range of people and has a comprehensive grasp of the English language. NorthSouth Multi Media is a family owned and operated business which has a stable of 6 publications covering two weekly publications and four farming publications spread throughout New Zealand. The position is based in Dargaville and hours will be negotiated.

Please send CV with covering letter to accounts@thelifestyler.co.nz.

so beat the rush to enjoy this unique glimpse into the imagination of a storytelling genius. Mr Geisel may not have been a medical doctor at all, but under the pen name ‘Seuss’ he has certainly prescribed the ‘best medicine’ of laughter to generations of readers. ¢
