In the early hours of July 7, a motor vehicle was used to smash the doors of the Corner Dairy on Murdoch Street and River Road. Police say a silver 1999 Nissan Cefiro registration DML611 was reversed into the front doors of the dairy. “We know the vehicle was stolen from Whangarei Hospital earlier the previous day. This vehicle was later located burnt out about 12km north of Dargaville on State Highway 12,” said Area Prevention Manager senior sergeant, John Fagan.

This vehicle was involved in a number of incidents in Dargaville on the evenings of July 6 and 7 and Police would like to hear from anyone who has any information that would identify the occupants or who saw the vehicle in Dargaville around this time. The Ministry of Primary Industries confirms that toheroa, prohibited from public gathering, have been collected, with the ministry taking action against poaching. “A lot of people are taking advantage of the abundance of tuatua on Ripiro beach, but unfortunately there has been an increase in the illegal take of toheroa, the latter being a prohibited species,” said spokesman, Stephen Rudsdale. He says there have been a number of cases reported of people confusing juvenile toheroa with tuatua as well as people genuinely not knowing the difference between tuatua and toheroa.

“Accordingly, we have increased fishery patrols on the beach, including night patrols, resulting in a number of apprehensions.” A local resident, who does not wish to be named, alerted MPI to illegal shellfish collecting around Maunganui Bluff and said she would like to see signage up around the beach. Mr Rusdale says deciding what languages to include is an issue. “MPI has considered multilingual signs, but we’ve found it problematic to decide which languages to include. We do have multilingual information on our website and paper brochures.” ¢

The nurses walked from the hospital on Awakino Road to the Jervois Street/ Normanby Street intersection, where they held placards and flags, inviting passing motorists to ‘toot’ in support. “Lots were rostered to work, but came out here instead,” said registered nurse Barbara Drake. “Some have stayed behind to work in the life-preserving area. This isn’t just about the money, but about safe staffing levels. We need more staff numbers.” Waipoua resident, Liam Kiely, travelled to Dargaville to support the nurses. “Most people know someone

needing hospital care, and nurses supply a vital role in the community. I’ve spoken to the nurses, and they just want to resources to provide safe care for their patients,” he said. The protest was a part of the nationwide strike voted on by the New Zealand Nurses Organisation after rejecting the latest district health board offer. That deal raised the job’s base salary and pay increases to occur annually, with promotions into management increasing the rate further. It also offered an extra 500 nursing staff. The strike ended at 7am Friday. ¢

Dargaville residents will be able to hook up to Northpower Fibre over the next three months, whilst Waikaraka, Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Ruawai will be part of the Northpower Fibre expansion over the next few years. It is expected that by 2022, the network will reach a total of around 33,000 homes and premises across Kaipara and Whangarei. Over the past five years, Northpower has recorded over 460 known incidents where damage has been caused to its electricity network resulting in power outages. However, the company says it is not always made aware of incidents – a challenge shared by Top Energy, the Far North’s electricity lines company which has recorded 530 third party interference incidents on its electricity network in the same period. Northpower Network General Manager Josie Boyd says more than 100 of the incidents in Kaipara and Whangarei Districts involved vehicles or machinery damaging the network, usually hitting power poles, taking out overhead lines or digging through underground cables - while over 300 involved trees striking powerlines or power poles. Top Energy has recorded 100 car versus pole incidents, 60 events where third parties have damaged the network, and 370 tree events causing interruption to electricity supply.

“The message we want to get out there is for people to take a good look around them and be really careful because we don’t want people getting hurt,” says Mrs Boyd. “Before you excavate or move loads around lines please call our Fault line for advice – as it is not worth taking a risk around electricity. And if you have to think “is it too close” it probably is.” Russell Shaw, Top Energy’s Chief Executive shares similar concerns. Mr Shaw says that despite safety campaigns encouraging people to contact their lines company for advice on ‘how close is too close’, people are still taking too many risks - like putting containers, buildings and other structures too close to powerlines. Separately, Northpower and Top Energy are continuing to collaborate with the Northland forestry sector on safety measures around powerlines.

A newly-established community trust is working with vulnerable youth and changing the course of their lives.

Success was balancing on a knife edge at the Northland Hospitality Championships with Dargaville woman Yasmin Bainbridge impressing the judges with her skills.

Motivate Learning Hub offers a free level two NZQA qualification certificate in foundation skills for people between the ages of 16 to 19 years old. Students also have the opportunity to gain NCEA level two credits and in semester two will study for the New Zealand Certificate of Retail. Director, Glenn Henderson, says the focus of the course is around employment. “The students set goals. Their first goal might be to pass the course by the end of the year, then they set a new goal for next year and create a lifetime line.” There are currently six students enrolled, and the course has the capacity for 10 students. “Hopefully by the end of the year, they will be able to go on to further education such as polytech or they will be ready for the workforce.” Student Erena Ngapera, 16, is working towards her goal of being an air hostess and dreams of travelling the world. “I enjoy working individually, and the teachers will help us if we need it.” Fellow student and friend Janna Campbell, also 16, says she wants to become a makeup artist. “It’s better here because you get oneon-one tutoring. The teachers help us look into courses we can take after this to help us reach our goals. It’s exciting.”

Glenn says the students are making good progress and he is seeing positive outcomes. “They are starting to take control of their own learning. They aren’t doing it just because they are told to; they are doing it because they want to.” Semester two starts on Monday, July 30. It all came down to knife skills as Yasmin, a level four cookery student went up against Kelvin Deng, who is studying the level five diploma in advanced cookery. Yasmin won the live dessert, and Kelvin won the salmon dish, both gaining gold medals with Kelvin beating Yasmin by just 1.7 points. Yasmin says the competition was challenging, but it was all about attitude and support from her tutor. “Once I’ve finished my course I would love to have my own cafe set up with Asian fusion flavours.” National Salon Director, Martin Harrop, who headed the judging panel, was so impressed that he extended an invitation to both students to represent the region at the national finals in Auckland in August, an opportunity usually only reserved for one winner. Later in the day Yasmin and fellow NorthTec level four cookery student, Leah Land, beat four other NorthTec duos to win the Nestle Professional Magic Box team event. This event was a two and a half hour pressure test where teams had to design and cook four portions of a main and dessert from a box of ingredients given to them on the day.

Ask any of the many folks who have chosen to move north and make the Kaipara their home after living in one of our major cities — or places around the globe. If you want to know why they love it here, there are three things which top the list — the relaxed pace of life and cost of living, the outdoors on our doorstep, and a sense of community. That’s one intangible yet vital thing, which is missing from the urban sprawl, where many folks’ only connection to their neighbours is a series of noise violation notices. Invest in your community countryside anachronism to watch the apprentice electrician, the clerk or the engineer running to answer the fire siren, but volunteers like these have saved countless lives — and that’s without mentioning surf lifesavers, coast guard radio operators, ambulance officers and many more. Local businesses are also the ones who answer the hundreds of little calls for help from people trying to advance their clubs and groups, children’s school activities and sports teams. Each year all of our small towns see hundreds of raffles, fundraisers, sausage sizzles and other events designed to put more quality in young people’s lives and educations. Sometimes it’s a simple affair, but others — like the forthcoming pro wrestling match organised to help the primary school in Dargaville — are big productions. Other such big events happening around this time of year include the Wearable Arts Gala — with many pillars of the business community in support — the Dargaville Art Awards, the Taniwha Cup youth rugby championship — and the list goes on. In Mangawhai, volunteers have organised an entire second-hand emporium to donate tens of thousands of dollars to community projects. The winter rains are here, but work goes on as usual on the farm. While the current precipitation makes it harder to apply fertiliser, other tasks of a maintenance variety are proceeding apace, buoyed — at least in the dairy sector — by a positive outlook for the coming season. While the backlog in the supply and fitment of milk chillers to meet stricter new regulations imposed by international trade has seen many of our refrigeration

specialists and electricians tied up during the drying off and calving season, other tradespeople have also been flat out working on rural projects. This time of

year can be a stressful one, as farmers juggle the gruelling work of calving with its attendant veterinary issues and long hours with the need to strike while the iron is hot for maintenance. That’s on the homestead as well as the shed, with plumbing, drainage and water purity issues dominating back home. There’s been a glimmer of light in the form of an announcement just before the winter season that the 2018/19 price for milk solids may brush the seven dollar mark. It is good news for those who wish to undertake major projects — like the aforementioned chiller replacements and upgrades, road and race repairs or the construction of new covered pads, for example. Others in the market paint a slightly less rosy picture, citing the influence of Chinese production on our exports,

but still, place the payout in the high sixes. Of course, on the ground level, it’s all hands to the pump this time of year. So it’s good to know that there are plenty of local tradespeople and support services to come to the aid of the busy farm worker. Of particular note with the deep mud and heavy rains of the last weeks has been the situation with tyres — those dwelling on metal roads have seen washboarding and potholes proliferate, giving utes and trucks a hammering just when livestock needs moving. Quads need more grip in the brown stuff, especially when checking in on new arrivals to the herd. There’s no doubt that despite the weather our farming neighbours and friends will keep fighting the good fight — make sure to lend a hand if you can and help everyone get through this busy time of year. ¢

Life on the farm is busy, especially at certain times of the year, and many women play a vital role in ensuring everything runs smoothly there as well as within the household, but are they getting all the support they need in return? For some women, there is a need to get away from the home environment and its busyness, even for a few hours, and be with other women. Rural women in New Zealand are multitalented and capable and well-supported with many groups to be a part of, each providing a network of people who understand the way of life and all it entails. One of the longest-standing groups is the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, which began in 1921. The group provides opportunities for members to be involved in all types of homemaking and developing lifelong friendships. More information can be found at wi.org.nz. Also available is Rural Women New Zealand, who focus their attention on four main areas of interest: rural health, education, land use and social issues. They facilitate various fundraising campaigns, such as leptospirosis research, which in the 1970s and 1980s played a key role in the development of vaccines for dairy cattle and pigs, thus improving the health of the animals and reducing the risk of contracting this serious disease by farm workers.
