The waharoa entranceway is a significant piece for the school as it was carved by school groundsperson Jay Simmonds who studies carving in Auckland along with fellow carvers Bryce Woolen and William Theodore. They agreed it was important for their first big creation to adorn the school. “We ourselves are in the process of learning, and the first thing to learn is to know what it means to gift something and for that gift to be received. It highlights the giving and sharing of time,” said Ms Simmonds. “The intricate carvings represent

many facets of a Maori worldview. The concept of time, the separation from darkness into light and knowledge are represented.” The unveiling and blessing was the first opportunity for Otamatea students to perform a new school haka created at the end of 2014. Unknown to the carvers when they began the project, the haka represents the same as the carving and in addition acknowledges the Kaipara region. ”The fact that we were not aware of what the school was learning has shown us that what we carved is right, and this

is the time for OHS to be strong, and stand true,” said Mr Woolen. The waharoa will be used in the future during powhiri and on other special occasions. “We are all in this together without exception. It is teamwork and collaboration and about the community. Every single person is welcome in this place,” said principal Rachel Clothier-Simmonds. “We are very honoured to receive this gift and are proud to have it overlooking the arrival and departures of all users of the school.” 

The children had a demonstration of the stretcher and walking chair and viewed the inside of the vehicle, learning what might happen if they ever need to go in one. “We are really grateful Katie could come and give the children a better understanding of the ambulance service and it was good to see they all know to dial 111 if needed,” said library manager Lisa Salter.

Minister salutes commissioners

From Italy to Mititai  by Ann Morgan

Ian Godfrey from Mititai received a call regarding a mysterious neighbour he had years ago.

 by Ann Morgan

Associate Minister of Local Government Louise Upston has given the thumbs up to the relationship between the Kaipara commissioners and the community, after a visit to the district, saying she is pleased good progress is being made.

in 2016, in line with triennial general elections for all local authorities. Since their appointment the commissioners had been working to address the council’s issues and improving its performance. This includes rebuilding the relationship between the council and the communities in the Kaipara. “The commissioners are continuing their good progress in the governance of the Kaipara district and I am confident they will hand over a well-functioning, efficient council at the next local elections in 2016,” Ms Upston added. “It is clear that there is widespread support for the commissioners in the district and they have made significant progress in their work. “It’s also pleasing to see the planning that is well underway for the transition to full democracy and elections next year.” 

Italian born Emanuela Pasini had heard her grandfather, Rinaldo Reboa’s stories of his time in the Kaipara, and came to New Zealand to pay her respects to the Behersing family that helped him. She wanted to visit their graves. “I emailed the Kaipara District Council and Mary White invited me to ‘drop by’ if I came to town,” said Emanuela. “I brought letters from the Behersing sisters and the last letter that Ian, their neighbour, wrote in 1969 to my grandfather. She was impressed by the collaboration between the commissioners and local groups which was leading to a range of opportunities in the community. “I was lucky to meet with a number of Northland organisations - the Mangawhai Endowment Trust, Mangawhai Museum, Maungaturoto Residents Association and Dargaville Arts Association,” Ms Upston said. “I was impressed by the great work that these groups are doing in their communities, using their creativity to help make each of their town’s vibrant and inclusive places. Their positive feedback about their experiences with the commissioners was also great to hear first-hand.” The minister announced in April, the three commissioners appointed in 2012 would be re-appointed for a further year. Film talent on show The Dargaville Community Charitable Trust and the Anzac Theatre will host a prize giving and public screening of the Northland Film Competition finalists on Sunday, July 26 at 2.30pm. This is the sixth year that the trust has run a film competition and the first one that has been open to all Northlanders. “The trust is delighted with the number of entries, with 17 for the school age section, four for the open section and three for the Gallipoli section,” says trust secretary Jacoba Puharich. The first screening will be for RSA members and friends followed by the main prize giving, where Northland MP Winston Peters will present

Bank ‘closed for good’

 by Ann Morgan

For one day a year, Dargaville BNZ bank closes their doors, allowing staff and casual workers to get out in the community and get their hands dirty as part of the banks ‘closed for good’ initiative.

The Wellsford RSA Jenkins extension was officially opened on Saturday July 11. The guests included the National president of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association BJ Clark, the RSA CEO David Moger, the Rt Hon Winston Peters and the Rodney ratepayers representative James Colville.

 BNZ bank manager Sharon George and BNZ staff are ready to get their hands dirty for the ‘closed for good’ initiative  The Wellsford RSA committee at the opening ceremony of the Jenkins extension

“It was a fabulous day, and worth all the hard work everyone involved has put in,” said RSA treasurer Shirley Blakemore. “Rodney College assisted with the catering and they did a fantastic job, it was absolutely awesome. It is exciting to know we have the space for the community to use for functions now.” Local piper Trent Jones, piped the official party into the complex and a bugler played the last post and the reveille with Les Jenkins cutting the ribbon. “When you look at Wellsford, a smaller town, you could perhaps understand if their RSA was struggling, so why isn’t it,” said National president of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association BJ Clark. “What I saw was a group of people who are well led and have worked very hard to improve their RSA, and not let it decline. “They have involved and welcomed the community into their club and that is the reason for their success. They are rightly proud of what they have achieved and they have shown that you can either look backwards or move

forwards. As I watched on the evening I saw everyone enjoying themselves in a venue that provided warmth, security, and atmosphere. “As the National President of the RSA I am very proud of Wellsford. They understand that the RSA is still relevant today and that to continue to be successful we must look after our members and make visitors welcome. This is why we will still be here for another 100 years. “I had a wonderful evening and wish them every success.” 

“Last year we did some waterblasting and planted trees,” says BNZ bank manager Sharon George. “It would be nice to see more groups making the most of this. “We love it and have a lot of fun doing it. It is a great team building exercise as well.” This years ‘closed for good’ will take place on Wednesday, September 2 and Mrs George wants to urge groups to take advantage of this opportunity. Any community group can apply to make the most of BNZ’s offer provided they supply any equipment needed to

do the tasks. “If we have the skills and expertise we are happy to help.” The bank assesses where their staff can do the most good and try to fit in as much as possible into one day, calling on staff from Whangarei branches if needed. Groups that had help in previous years are eligible to apply again. Application forms can be found on BNZ’s website www.closedforgood.org/ submission/close, and submissions close July 24. 

New walking tracks resource Milestone mark for car buff  by Ayla Miller

 by Ayla Miller

Trampers and tourists will now have access to updated information regarding walking tracks around the Kaipara region, thanks to a new comprehensive list available on the Kaipara District Council website.

Dargaville resident and car enthusiast, George Tier, feels most at home with his head under a bonnet and was recently awarded his 50 year membership badge for the Northland Vintage Car Club.

 George Tier with his 1963 A40 Farina

The KDC has collected information from various community organisations, prompted by the Kauri Coast Promotions Society. “We wanted it to include the whole region so we put it out to our contacts in the community and they sent in information,” says KDC policy analyst Mark Schreurs, who had the task of putting it all together. “It’s about promotion. Firstly it is making that information easily accessible for the locals, and to people visiting the area. “Hopefully it will encourage people to come to the Kaipara and stay an extra day.”

The Department of Conservation will send information to the council regarding track closures and other updates. “It will be good to know where the tracks are and to have the updates readily available.” The list incorporates tramps from across the district from Mangawhai Heads, and Waipoua Forest to Pouto. “There are a range of tramps from walks that will take a good day to complete, to a walk in the park,” says Mark. Visit www.kaipara.govt.nz — click on service and info to find walking tracks listed under recreational activities. 

George’s interest in cars stemmed from his mechanical apprenticeship when he was 15 years old and has dedicated his life to working with cars. He was particularly inspired by the movie Genevieve which came out in 1953 and told the story of two veteran cars and their crews participating in the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. “After that movie, we all looked at our cars a bit more closely,” he said. His collection includes a 1939 Austin Big 7, a 1963 Austin A40 Farina and a 1952 Austin A40 sports car. “The Austin A40 sports car was originally registered in Nairobi and belonged to an English doctor who bought it over to Kawakawa in 1960.

A few years later his son wrote it off and it sat in a garage for 20 odd years before someone told the vintage car club about it.” George was particularly taken with the car as it was the same model as one he had when he was 19, so once all the parts were found, he began to put it back together — bolt by bolt. “It took exactly one year,” he said. “I started working on it in Labour weekend around 2005 and finished it Labour weekend the following year.” He says there are a few members of the Northland Vintage Car Club that have been involved for 50 years, and on their monthly drives, “the older we get, the further we want to go.” 

Theatre welcomes Northland talent

Mid-winter Christmas in Maungaturoto

 by Ayla Miller

 by Ayla Miller

Audiences will soon have the chance to appreciate some of Northland’s local talent during TheatreFest, hosted by Dargaville Little Theatre on July 24 and 25.

A hot meal and a warm fire are two necessary ingredients to beat the winter blues and soon members and guests of the Maungaturoto Country Club will be enjoying both of these, during their mid-winter Christmas dinner at 7pm on July 25.

 Thomas Koloi, Eryn Wilson-Collins and Melanie McLaren get ready to rehearse ‘Blind hope’

Seasoned performer and first time script writer Eryn Wilson-Collins, is directing her own production ‘Blind Hope’— a story about the journey of a woman in an abusive relationship. “It is quite nerve-wracking having your work put out there for everyone to see and judge, but it gets you out of your comfort zone and it is a great opportunity to learn more about our craft,” she says. The evening will showcase three plays directed by members of Dargaville Little Theatre including Shakespearean farce ‘Will’s Women’ directed by David and Anna Cutts, and comedy ‘Check Please’ directed by Julianne Parkinson, as well as two other entries from amateur theatre groups in Northland. Those who make it through to the regional finals from the Upper North

Island will perform in Te Kuiti. Finalists then travel to Hamilton to take part in the Nationals. Friday, July 24 is an opportunity for audiences to see the array of productions without being part of the judging. On Saturday, July 25 TheatreFest adjudicator and drama teacher Janelle Pitout will assess all aspects of the performances including script writing and direction, providing in depth critiques. Participating as an actor in the last TheatreFest, hosted by Otamatea Repertory Theatre, Eryn says she is grateful for the chance to pass on what she learnt during the last show, which took the group to Wellington for the Nationals. Tickets are available from Moa Kaipara, $15 for Friday night and $20 for Saturday or $30 for both evenings. 

Along with the ambient sounds of bluegrass band Otherwise Fine, there will be a Christmas meal for $25. People are also encouraged to come along dressed in their best Christmas costumes and there will be prizes for the best dressed male and female. “So gather up a group and come along dressed for the occasion for a meal and entertainment,” says organiser Albie Paton. Maungaturoto Country Club is a sports and social complex with several affiliated clubs including bowls,

squash, rugby, JMB, motocross and the Otamatea Repertory Theatre. “We are always looking to increase the membership,” says Albie. Members can make the most of regular meals on Thursdays and Fridays. The club holds frequent events and will be hosting a quiz night on August 8 to raise funds for a group of students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards. To find out more about these events, contact Albie Paton on 09 431 8148 or 027 494 9448. 

Live entertainment was performed by Mark Solo with karaoke for those keen to show their vocal skills. The pool tables were put to good use and the children’s room kept the young entertained. A L L W I N T E R S TO C K SHOES - JEANS - HOODIES

The influenza virus can be a serious illness, causing deaths every year and it is important to be aware of the signs of infection in order to get early treatment. The virus infects the nose, throat and lungs and is worse than a cold. Symptoms include sudden fevers, chills, muscle aches, a runny nose, coughs and stomach upsets. The elderly and the very young, pregnant women, and people with particular medical conditions are at a higher risk of developing complications from the virus, such as pneumonia. Check with your local general practitioner to find out if you or your family are eligible for free flu vaccinations. Children aged four years and under who have been hospitalised for respiratory illness, or have a history of significant respiratory illness may also be eligible. The virus is spread through the air and by touch. This means if you are unwell you should stay away from social situations including work and school where contact may occur. Rest and keeping up fluids will help the body to recover. Most people will come into contact with the influenza virus and although contact does not immediately mean infection, it does mean that keeping up a strong immune system during winter

Beyond a simple cure for pain In a time when European medicine had not even been conceived of by its notional ‘fathers’ — the ancient Hippocrates and Galen — acupuncture already enjoyed a long and respected history in the east. Stemming from a culture over four thousand years old, it’s little wonder that this now scientifically proven practice is so effective. After all — had the principles behind acupuncture proven to be anything less, the Chinese would have given up on them long before the first western doctors ever mapped out the human anatomy! Nowadays, traditional acupuncture and western biomedicine work hand in hand in Dargaville, thanks to experienced therapist Dominic Manuel. Dominic holds a postgraduate diploma in traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture, as

well as a bachelor degree in neuromuscular and massage, combining the knowledge of east and west. “Acupuncture is a holistic system,” he says, “Aiming to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms of pain.” While pain relief is a huge benefit of the gentle art of applying small, medically sterilised one-use needles to areas in tune with the body’s flow of energy, there are many other areas beyond the widely known benefits to the neck, back and joints which surprise patients referred by ACC or their GP. As well as providing a welcome relief from old

injuries, strains and pains, acupuncture has proven its worth as a means of treating headaches, stress, rheumatic problems, carpal tunnel syndrome and a huge list of other ailments. Dominic points out that the body is a system, not a collection of mechanical parts, and so even problems affecting the vital organs may be treated — and possibly diagnosed well ahead of time — by the application of this medical discipline which has been studied for centuries. For those seeking an alternative to simply taking powerful medication and hoping for healing to take its course, Dominic’s Dargaville practice offers a wide range of treatment options. Local folk living with pain, stress and many other health issues have come to rely on his abilities to keep healthy and active, whether for work or play. As he says — the body has an amazing ability to heal itself. All that is sometimes needed is a helping hand to free up that regenerative power.

Safety check for heavy transport  by Andy Bryenton

As winter conditions highlight the need for safety — and for rigorous safety checks — on the road, Northland’s rural and commercial fleet must meet the same, if not higher levels of oversight as private passenger vehicles. While most people are familiar with the Warrant of Fitness system, recently and controversially updated so that some later-model vehicles must only pass a professional test once per year, the regulations which govern heavy transport have become more exacting, making the Certificate of Fitness for working machines more important than ever. The COF represents a different level of mechanical systems checks, and applies to vehicles with a weight of over 3,500 kilograms. It’s a popular myth that this means only commercial diesel trucks are affected — in fact, no matter what the motive power or intended use of your vehicle, a COF is needed if that weight limit is exceeded. This puts large modern RVs and campers, some trailers and horse carriers, and even large ex-service

machines such as ambulances in the COF category. Until recently, all COF checks were administered solely by VTNZ stations. But a change in the rules for the COF process means that now certain private businesses can apply to issue COF certification, providing they pass a very stringent series of tests set by the government agency. The first such company to do so here in the Kaipara is Agridustrial in Kaiwaka, bringing together the means to test heavy vehicle safety and the means to repair and remedy any problems found — VTNZ stations do not have the same mechanical repair and engineering facilities. The COF test itself is rigorous, checking similar parameters to the WOF but on a larger scale. Needless to say, when dealing with bigger, heavier  The COF test applies to all vehicles over 3,500kg, no matter what they are used for — farming, recreation or transport

AUTO

Turned up past eleven  by Andy Bryenton

It’s a machine born out of vicious, year-on-year horsepower and performance battles between the three biggest names in this slice of the automotive world. Made to handle higher top speeds and more brutal acceleration than its workaday ‘little brother’, and fettled and tuned into a machine which can give you chills — even standing still. It’s been given more firepower with a turbocharged boost, and then let loose under the command of racing pros to garner more feedback for more tweaks. And the biggest surprise — this isn’t the latest Audi, Merc or BMW. The war of the big German grand tourers is a world away from the Can Am Maverick 1000 Turbo. Because even if the Autobahn was ploughed up with bulldozers, this fierce, green and black offroader would be able to power across the resulting surface at a blistering 130 kilometres per hour. That’s breaking the highway speed limit — on dirt, sand and mud. Rivals Polaris and Arctic Cat pushed the boundaries with their RZR and Wildcat X models, but the fitment of that turbo has done for the Maverick what early turbochargers and four wheel drive did for rallying in the late 1980s. Think of this as the equivalent

of the barnstorming old Quattro, or indeed the Subaru WRX. That same sense of bite, grip, and face-ripping acceleration are clearly apparent. As is the technology needed to power the bright-lime roll-caged Maverick up beyond the 100k mark. Dual a-arms in front and torsional trailing arms in back are supported by Fox Podium racing shocks, providing over a foot of travel when the going gets rough. Major advances have been made in cooling the CVT transmission system, meaning not just smoother power delivery, but also longer belt life. And of course, when your toes caress the pedal there’s the angry whirr of the turbo right between the seats, lashing the big v-twin to further excesses of power. Add to this the fact that the Maverick looks like something Bruce Wayne might want to wrap in black  Seen here in its ‘natural environment’, the Maverick is an adrenaline surge crafted from metal carbon for his night-time job, and you and rubber have an exciting off-road package. Certainly, if you have the chance to take a test drive, do so without hesitation. Just remember that it may take some time FLY through your next COF to wipe the smile off your face afterwards! 
