Ken has a healthy respect for the drivers who pit their skills against Australia’s challenging Bathurst circuit and he doesn’t even have to leave the Kaipara to get behind the wheel of his own Holden racing machine to challenge the twists and turns of Mount Panorama himself. Or any number of the world’s racing circuits, depending upon a choice of computer programs. The fitter, turner, welder and toolmaker has deftly sidestepped the need for airline tickets, expensive pit crews and tons of tyres by building his own V8 supercar simulator — a project which has consumed over seven months and is valued at more than $60,000. “I was talking to a friend of mine who said he’s built a p Faye and Ken Subritzky are set to bring V8 racing to a whole new audience simulator and that gave me a Ken and his wife Faye intend to take seed of inspiration. After more than 27 years in local government, former Kaipara District Council manager, Mark Vincent, is not about to hang up his boots — he’s turning his attention to the Kaipara Harbour.

“We have been operating for over 11 years and speaking to an MP recently, the feedback was that very few people know about it.” To raise awareness, Mr Eager along with Dargaville Hospital operations manager, Jen Thomas, will speak at a public meeting hosted by Dargaville Rotary Club at the Methodist Church Complex at 7.30pm on July 31. The service first visited Dargaville in December 2003 and has since treated 550 local patients, primarily in dental and endoscopy. “It’s your town, your show,” says Mr Eager, “we provide the service but it’s staffed by Dargaville nurses and filled with local patients.” Four nurses work with surgeons on board gaining education and skills relevant to their daily nursing practice. Nationally the 40 tonne, 20 meter long truck has treated over 16,000 patients and travels on a five week circuit to destinations in the North and South Island. Operations include dental, endoscopy, ear nose and throat, g ynaecolog y, ophthalmolog y,

orthopaedics, plastic surgery, urology, and general surgery. The service works in partnership with the Ministry of Health and operates on patients from public waiting lists. They work with the local District Health Boards to treat priority patients. Mr Eager says the idea was formed in 1995 when New Zealand received radiology equipment to treat kidney stones lessening recovery time. “Instead of keeping it at one hospital, the idea was to put it on a bus and take it around New Zealand.” He adds that it’s about sharing access to resources and treating patients in their own town, close to their existing support networks. Education also plays a key role and as well as training, the service includes a video conferencing link between two or more remote locations to share knowledge between health professionals. He says the meeting is also about thinking outside the box about what’s possible for health in a digital area.

“In the last few years I have discovered a passion for the restoration of the health of the harbour. A lot of great work has already been done, but I reckon there is still a long way to go.” Mark was the KDC’s representative on the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group, an iwi-led organisation with the mission to achieve “a healthy, productive Kaipara Harbour” This gave him a greater insight into the issues and challenges facing the harbour’s future, with one basic message being that, what we do on the land has an impact on the harbour — the land and the water are parts of the same system. “It is likely that the main barriers to landowners doing more in regard to waterways protection are time and money,” says Mark. While the district council has suspended its biodiversity fund for this year, and the regional council’s environment fund is fully subscribed for the next 12 months, at least the government has just now signalled a change to the tax law to make riparian planting a deductible operational expense rather than a capital item. “I

would like to hear from both landowners who would like a hand with some planting, and people who would be prepared to give some of their time. Based as I am near Paparoa, my interest is firstly in the Otamatea area. The mystery of wee Mac

Passing on a passion for traditional building

In artist Ray Fowler’s quest to find a suitable tombstone to paint, he found wee Mac’s grave.

Building tutor and construction company owner Tim Magill is proud to carry on a tradition of wood crafting which goes back to colonial times in the Kaipara. His practical barns, cabins, homes and sheds utilise the same materials with which early pioneers built the Albertland settlements — wood from our abundant forests. And while some aspects of building practice and technology have changed, Tim still holds a strong belief that a well-built wooden frame beats metal hands down. It’s not just his customers who have been converted, either. Tim has in the past months been partnered up with NorthTec as a tutor, handing on his skills to a new generation of builders. His ten years of experience at the helm of his company Barn Builders means that he’s far more ‘hammer, nails and saw’ than textbook and laptop, lending a practical edge to his carpentry pupils. Now there’s a new chapter in Tim’s story, with the opening on July 27 of what he light-heartedly calls ‘a shrine to the pine’

Ray scoured the cemeteries of Auckland and Dargaville for years but it wasn’t until he spotted graves amongst the scrub at Tokatoka that he found what he was looking for. “I came across a very small grave that was perfect for what I was after. There was no date on it, just the words — ‘In Loving Memory of our Darling Wee Mac’.” He has become intrigued and gathering clues about who the child was from the grave. By the size, he estimates Mac to have been three or

four years old and the surrounding tombstones date around the late 1800s, early 1900s period. It has an iron railing around it and a small angel statuette. “The angel is holding an anchor so I presume wee Mac drowned.” The painting will be exhibited at the Dargaville Arts Association exhibition beginning July 23 — August 6 at 108 Victoria Street. His training crew will also have completed projects for sale, charting their progress to the status of fully fledged carpenters. Tim is keen to see his students get into work and work experience, and he invites local tradies to visit and give his crew a chance to impress. At the same time he hopes that his new retail space will attract more customers for his core building business, constructing traditional, cost-effective wooden buildings throughout the north. It all kicks off on Saturday, July 27 with an open day bbq — a great chance to meet Tim and his team.

If your next rates bill seems a little high, fear not. Kaipara District Council rates are now being paid in four equal annual instalments instead of the previous six. The change, from July 1, helps reduce administration costs and brings KDC into line with most other councils, including Far North and Whangarei. “The council realises that the change will make rates invoices look significantly larger but ratepayers need to realise that it is the same amount of money

It is a Whanau Ora Collective, an interagency approach, and ‘navigators’ work with whanau to develop a plan and arrange access to a range of services identified to achieve their goals. “It’s about bringing services together to achieve better outcomes for whanau,” says Kaiwhakatere Tuakana (lead navigator), Jenny Huriwai, who is also manager of Circus Kumarani. “There are some awesome services in Kaipara but it’s about knowing about them or believing that they will make a difference.” Jenny will continue to manage Circus Kumarani with the help of a new office administrator. The organisations involved are Te Uri O Hau, Te Roroa Learning Assistance, Kaipara Abuse Prevention, Kaipara Budgeting, Parish of Northern Wairoa,

Kumarani Productions, Otamatea Community Services and Te Korowai Aroha Pumau. “Even though there are only eight service providers on the Primary Collective, we definitely don’t limit our options to other services in our community — it’s about what whanau want,” says project manager Tania Moriarty. Rangimarie McDowell won Nga Ripo’s logo competition and the koru design is her interpretation of the collective. “The ripples reflect, survive, embrace and carry on to grow throughout the design,” says Rangimarie in her explanation. The project began over five years ago and construction is scheduled to finish at the end of July if the weather permits. For those eager to use the skatepark, whether it be unicyclers, skateboarders or bmx riders, the time can’t come soon enough. “Feedback from the people who will use it has been positive,” says Darlene, “they ask the same question, ‘when is it going to be finished?’” Vuletich Construction has the contract to build the skatepark and director John Vuletich says he has taken park users ideas on board when constructing it. Rails, a half pipe and half mini bowl are just some of the features in the 925 square metre concrete park designed to flow to make movement fluid. The committee has had to jump through hoops to get the project up and running, and a major obstacle was the location. Logan Street was earmarked for the skatepark, but following a recommendation by the Dargaville Sports and Recreation Infrastructure Plan, the committee submitted a proposal to have the project moved to

Darlene says the location is perfect, the skatepark is between the swimming pool and a new playground. “I can visualise this place in summertime. Kids playing on the playground and in the pool, lots of skaters and unicyclers, maybe a game of touch in the background.” The project has cost around $250,000 with funding coming from the Kaipara District Council, Lotteries Grant Board, ASB Community Trust and donations. “Projects like the cinema and the swimming pool have happened because they have been community driven. We are part of the community, and we will do what needs to be done to make it happen. We deserve to have these cool things in our community.” A low key opening is planned by committee member Izaak Birch who has been part of the project since the beginning. He joined the committee in his early twenties and is now nearing his thirties. “We can’t wait to see people enjoying it in August,” says Darlene. ¢

At the coastal city of La Coruna in Galicia, northern Spain, a large pohutukawa tree grows, its age and existence an enigma. While researching early Spanish and Portuguese voyages to New Zealand, New Zealander Winston Cowie has gifted the tree, and people of La Coruna, a greenstone pendant carved and donated by Kerry Strongman, at Te Hana. Cowie has been working with film director David Sims and their documentary delves into potential Portuguese and Spanish discoveries of New Zealand. “The La Coruna pohutukawa has been an enigma since first being discovered in 2001,” Winston told The Kaipara Lifestyler. “The tree has not been dated although some say that it’s 400 to 500 years old and others 200 years old, and that it was brought back by an English sailor in the late

Some pieces of the puzzle fit, others don’t, but in my view, there is enough of the puzzle to say that New Zealand may have been discovered by the Portuguese or Spanish, and over 100 years prior to Abel Tasman. “Where the La Coruna pohutukawa fits in the puzzle, I honestly don’t know, it is a mystery that has been sitting there, waiting to be solved.” A sample from the tree has been taken for analysis. Kerry Strongman says when he heard Winston was travelling to Spain to date the pohutukawa, he carved “a very special piece of greenstone for a very special tree.” Mystery at Midge Bay will be screening at the Kumara Box on July 26 and 28.

After Mrs Wallace passed away, the Ruawai Gardening Club carried on the camellia displays in 1992. “I was always very interested in what Mrs Wallace was doing,” says secretary of 21 years, Noelene Gatehouse. “As a garden club we feel very proud of our camellia display. Today in the late Mrs Wallace’s garden still grow some of her beautiful old camellias.” The display takes place August 3, 10am–2pm with lunch at noon.
