The villa was built of timber milled in the family sawmill and was home to George and Emily Smith and their family of eight children. “It was in the kitchen, over a cup of tea, that the idea for The Kauri Museum was proposed,” says CEO, Lisa Tolich. “The covenant provides long-term protection for the property. However, the house did not come with an endowment for maintenance, and its listing with Heritage New Zealand does not provide revenue either. As an important part of our collection, The Kauri Museum is tasked with the care of the house and its unique collection of family heirlooms and stories. The house and gardens are opened for visitors on request. We also have a summer open season where visitors are welcomed. Unfortunately income raised from admission activities
is not sufficient to sustain the upkeep of Totara House. We have to think differently about how we can preserve the house and its stories for future generations — and we need help!” Revenue ideas include access for educational purposes use as a library or cooperative partnership with another organisation that has similar preservation goals. “We need input from our community to establish a sustainable future for this uniquely Kaipara treasure,” said Lisa. ”Please send through any thoughts and impressions that you might have by email to admin@kaurimuseum.com or contact 09 431 7417.” ¢

VERY WORTHWHILE LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE LGNZ Last week I attended the Local Government New Zealand Conference in Christchurch along with Chair Bill Shepherd and CEO Malcolm Nicholson. The conference is an annual event, the information provided from the various speakers and the ability to speak with and learn from other councillors and their staff was very worthwhile. Some of the key learnings for me were: • That many of the millennial generation are keen to be involved in helping with community groups, they just need to be asked! The presentation was from Sam Johnson who organised the Student Volunteer Army that did so much of the physical clean-up work after the Christchurch earthquakes. He is now Head of ‘Community for My-care’ and Champion of the newly launched ‘Community Guardians’. • Go local and go deep. This was a presentation from Deidre Otene, CEO Te Kotahitanga e Mahi Kaha Trust. Deidre is based in Kaikohe and is currently overseeing a major initiative for community health and well- being targeted at youth and getting some great results. • Climate change is both an opportunity and a challenge. This was a discussion between James Shaw and LGNZ Chair Dave Cull. James’s message was that due to New Zealand’s innovation and location we are very well positioned to create positive financial opportunities and be leaders in initiatives that halt and combat the effects of climate change and meet our emissions targets by 2050. • Three waters; which includes drinking water, storm water and waste water is a big agenda item that needs addressing by central
government, councils and communities. It is not affordable if done by councils on an individual basis, therefore it will most likely be regionally centralised. Minister Nanaia Mahuta, Minister for Local Government, addressed this and was very focused on working closely with local government and communities to get the outcomes expected and needed regarding water management across the whole of New Zealand • Making our spaces more attractive and usable must have at its heart what the community wants. There is no one size fits all. This was a presentation by Kylie Legge. The above presentations are all available to watch on the LGNZ website www.lgnz.co.nz Localism is a hot topic for local government currently. This is the decentralising of funding and control from Central Government and moving it to a Local Government level.
WHO IS LOCAL GOVERNMENT NEW ZEALAND LGNZ is the voice of Local Government, similar to the role that Federated Farmers play for all New Zealand farmers. They are governed by a National Council made up of 15 elected members from throughout New Zealand. The body represents the national interests of councils in New Zealand and lead best practice in the local government sector. They provide advocacy and policy services, business support, advice and training to members at a full council and individual level.

Illegal waste disposal costs u by Jill Dickie
Illegal dumping of rubbish in the Kaipara District Council area is costing up to $40,000 a year.

Council spokesperson, Ben Hope, says the council receives a call about dumped rubbish about once or twice each week. Most recently rubbish left in Awakino Road was removed at the cost of $150–$200. “There is a consultation process upcoming as a part of the Long Term Plan 2028, to investigate our rubbish and recycling processes,” said Ben. Instigating a wheelie bin
service to replace the current plastic bags would involve a large cost to change processing and handling, and residents will be invited to submit ways they can further reduce waste and how they would choose to pay for a change in services. The transfer station on Awakino Road is open Tuesday to Friday 9am to 4pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm. ¢
The late Mrs Betty Wallace was wellknown for her camellia garden, which family members continue to maintain to a high standard. Visitors came from around the Kaipara District for the annual display to add to and view the club contributions. “It’s nice that people come to contribute to the day. “The display brings people together to enjoy the variation of the flowers, and it’s good to catch up with old
friends,” said secretary and treasurer, Noelene Gatehouse. The blooms are freshly picked and handled with extreme care for transportation, as they bruise easily and the heads are susceptible to dropping off, and usually, last for three to four days. The next competitive display will be the rose show held in November — for more details contact Noelene 09 439 2071. ¢

Antonio (Pep) Paniora was awarded the Faller Excellence of the Year award with Brendon Sander for winning the Trainee of the Year award. Fellow Douglas Logging team members, Kevin McFarlane and Brendon Sander, were runners-up for Trainee of the Year award and Emerging Talent of the Year award respectively. Kyle Mason was also nominated in the Roading Excellence award. “Douglas Logging Ltd would like to extend their congratulations to all of the winners at the Northland Forestry Awards 2018. We are very proud of our nominees and special congratulations go to them. Well done boys,” says Douglas Logging spokesperson, Kylie Douglas. Judge, Jacqui Apiata-Coyne, said the calibre of entries this year had been particularly high. “The awards are becoming very difficult to judge, there is a high calibre among professionals within the industry, and many of those recognised in our awards would be equally recognised on a national platform.” The awards are one of many initiatives developed by the Northland Forestry Health and Safety Group, aimed to recognised and grow excellence within the industry.

The Department of Conservation is seeking public submissions on a new proposal to fully or partly close selected tracks in the kauri regions to help prevent the spread of kauri dieback disease. Track closures are being considered in situations where there is a high kauri dieback risk, low visitor use, high upgrade and ongoing maintenance costs and where a similar experience is available in the vicinity. “There are a number of tools DOC uses to help stop the spread of the disease, like track upgrades and rerouting, but in some instances track closure needs to be considered,” said DOC northern director of operations, Sue Reed-Thomas. “This consultation process allows
the public, who we know have a vested interested in the forest, kauri and kauri dieback a chance to have their say.” Not all tracks will be fully closed. There are 24 full closures and 10 partial closures proposed in the consultation. Partial closures being are considered where DOC can protect the kauri there and still retain the experience. Public submissions should be made on DOC’s website by August 10 where more information is available or by contacting the Kauri Coast DOC office on 09 439 3450. Meanwhile, the loop track at Trounson Kauri Park will be closed between July 25 and 27 for the construction of wash stations at the campground and picnic area entrances.
Mayor’s Memo Kia ora While the winter wet is upon us, here are a couple of things getting me a bit fired up recently. Water services all across New Zealand are under the pump. In a surprise announcement, the Government is proposing the biggest shake-up in local government since the amalgamations of the late 1980s. Sweeping changes to drinking water, wastewater and stormwater organisation are proposed for these “3 Waters”. New water utility companies are proposed — to be cross-regional in size and scale and amalgamating the water assets and functions from local councils. For Kaipara as far as we know this may mean our water services would get tipped into a new entity stretching from Cape Reinga to the Bombay Hills. Residents in Te Kopuru would be on the same water billing system as residents in Te Atatu, Auckland. It’s early days for discussion between Government and all the councils of New Zealand, not without tension. As far as we know water-related assets, liabilities, or work programmes would be removed from the balance sheet of Council — about 30% of activity. While the stream of information is flowing fast it’s hard to fathom what “3 Waters” changes could mean for Kaipara residents and ratepayers, and this review is due to gather speed over coming weeks. We’ll keep you informed of what we know, but be assured that while this proposal signals change no-one is about to turn off the taps and the water will continue to flow.
the community (thanks to those who contributed) and a proposal is on the Council agenda this week. The report proposes the same number (8) of Councillors across 4 wards rather than the 3 we have now. With two Councillors for each ward, the proposal includes ward boundary changes — the creation of a new Kaiwaka-Mangawhai ward; Otamatea ward from Brynderwyn to Tokatoka; a western ward from Tokatoka onwards to Tangiteroria and Waipoua back down to Pouto; and Dargaville with unchanged ward boundaries. Taking account of growth in Kaipara District and the clear community voice from the last Representation Review which called for no additional Councillors, we’re confident there’ll be good interest in this new look proposal. Once Council makes a decision on the proposal, I look forward to hearing from you on this, at community information events or through the public consultation ahead. I predict across Kaipara there’ll be a lot of poring over maps while it’s pouring with rain outside. Take your time on the roads through these wettest weeks. Let’s all look forward to sharing spring soon.

Kaipara Rates Update Following Kaipara District Council’s adoption of the Long Term Plan (LTP) on 26 June 2018 your rates will change. From 1 July 2018 rates will reflect Councils new plan.
The following information provides some insight into where your money goes, and some of the projects on the horizon.
About your rates bill
Spending rates dollars carefully
Interested in how your rates bill is worked out?
The Council carries out the necessary territorial authority functions along with activities the Kaipara community wishes Council to do. The choices we make about where we focus our activity and our budget are made as each year’s Annual or Long Term Plan is developed, with community feedback being sought before the plan is finalised.
Draft Each year Council consider what services and facilities to provide to local communities, and what new projects to undertake.
Consult
Budget
The Council share information about the plan and invite feedback from Kaipara locals on key decisions.
Council then set the budget for the year ahead and adopt its annual plan, and every third year a long term plan.
The Council work hard to keep costs down. The last year has been evidence that Council can run very efficiently as we managed to reduce debt significantly recovering from a position we found ourselves in when Commissioners were appointed in 2012.
What is the total income Council require to fund services?
The size of the circles below represent the proportional breakdown of $100 of rates. It doesn't include targeted rates, like water.
The range of services and facilities and total funding is set year to year through the Annual Plan, or in this instance the Long Term Plan. For the 2018/2019 year it's budgeted to be $55,926,000. Just under two-thirds of the money council needs comes from rates, while just over a third comes from fees and charges, subsidies and development contributions.
How are rates shared across the district?

Rating valuations were updated by QV and shared with property owners in December 2017, and these valuations form a part of the calculation of your rates bill. The new valuations will affect your rates bill from 1 July 2018.

The figures shared by QV show the total capital value of the 14,437 properties in Kaipara is now $8.6 billion with a land value of those properties of $5.0 billion. This is a 30% increase from the previous 2014 values. Increased values do not increase revenue for Council as the new values effect a redistribution of rates between ratepayers.
Remember –
that the Council also collects rates on behalf of the Northland Regional Council.

Kaiwaka Sports Association will host 1,000 Venturers from all over New Zealand, Australia and beyond in early January 2019.
p Kaiwaka will host the Venturers triannual Illuminate event for 2019
p Progress in the Matakohe bridges replacement project
Contractor, Fulton Hogan, advises that this temporary bridge staging is near completion and it will be used for access to the new two-lane bridge number two where piling of the piers has started. Building of both bridges will occur throughout winter and into summer. ‘Earthworks and drainage works at the western end of the two and a half kilometre project are continuing, to help an early start on laying the road surface when summer arrives.
‘Planning and design to ease the corners of both the current SH12/ Matakohe East Road/Barlow Lane intersection and the current SH12/ Ararua Road intersection are progressing well, and we are continuing to work closely with Kaipara District Council,’ the company says. A talk on progress will be held at Matakohe Memorial Hall Tuesday, July 31 from noon–2pm where Fulton Hogan’s project manager, Daniel McKessar, will provide an overview. ¢
The triannual event, Illuminate, is the major occasion for the Venturer section of Scouts New Zealand. They will be camping at the sports complex grounds and neighbouring properties, as well as utilising the school buildings, and they will engage in activities around Northland from December 31 until January 11. “This will be a wonderful chance to showcase our town, and the influx of people will be positive for our local businesses,” says Kaiwaka Sports Association manager, Cheryl Anderson. Preparations for the event include establishing temporary toilet and
shower blocks, erecting a marquee over the tennis courts for the catering area, transforming the grandstand into an entertainment stage, turning the pavilion into an internet cafe and adding a large movie screen to the swimming pool for outdoor viewing. Cheryl says there will also be a number of vehicle movements and many local facilities and services involved. The organisers are putting on a community meeting to discuss their plans and answer any questions from Kaiwaka community members on Friday, August 10 at 7pm at the KSA. All are welcome. ¢

Teen turbulence talk
Labouring for lifeline
u by Ayla Miller
u by Jill Dickie
A talk outlining how to navigate the teen years will be offered in Wellsford and Mangawhai in August by presenter, educator and parent consultant Adrienne Wood of Heartsync.
Inspired by personal experience and the rising number of suicides in New Zealand, Arikinui Gerrard put his everyday life on hold to cycle from Cape Reinga to Bluff, raising awareness and fundraising.
Adrienne has a particular interest in children presenting with complex behavioural needs. Drawing on her training with the Neufeld Institute, she seeks to help parents and professionals better understand youth from an attachment-based developmental perspective. “Often parenting techniques fail to recognise when the child is feeling wounded or hurt, and this causes them to react intentionally. This means they can lash out when actually they need love, care and support. We need to see them as through different eyes and as vulnerable,” Adrienne says. “Come along with an open mind. I’ve had parents say it’s been a game changer and caused them to rethink their parenting. “This seminar is about rediscovering that relationship with your kids and reigniting it in a healthy way.” Adrienne is an experienced high school teacher, lecturer in human development and is a mother to two adolescents of her own. The Teen Turbulence talk will be held at Rodney College on Friday, August 17 from 7–9pm and again at Mangawhai Village Hall on Saturday, August 18 from 7–9pm.
p Adrienne Wood of Heartsync will present new ways of dealing with the difficult adolescent years at her upcoming seminars

The talks will be suitable for parents of children of age 10 and up. This seminar is equally appropriate for parents of teens, parents of tweens and professionals working with adolescents. ¢

The MP made a quick stop at the gallery during a recent trip to Dargaville for a clinic with his constituents. “I’m not an art connoisseur, but I can see the quality and calibre here. I see that there is some spectacularly good talent displayed in these rooms and it’s great to see,” said Mr King. “When you have this sort of talent, it adds value to our community, and it’s really encouraging to see.” Kaipara Art Awards chairman, John Pickworth, said the conversation he had with the MP centred around community involvement in the arts — whether or not they were participants or viewers. “Events like this are good indicators

What we haven’t got we can get!
A lot can change in three and a half decades — and there’s no area of modern life where that’s more apparent than in the automotive trade. Think back to the year 1983 and the then-current state of the art, and you’ll see a whole different world. That automotive landscape of big classic Ford Falcons and the earliest Japanese marques — like the Datsun 120Y and the K series Corolla — was the one which Ken and Karyn Inder stepped into when Ken moved on from Dargaville’s Ford dealership to take his parts expertise in a new direction. With 14 years of knowledge at his disposal, even at this early stage, the new owner of Dargaville’s marine and auto store had little idea that he and his wife were embarking on a 35-year career serving the town and its motorists. On July 18 this year that momentous milestone has come and gone, and observant Dargaville folk will have noticed by now the bold signwriting on the corner site of Inders Auto One. Bowing out gracefully into retirement breaks a habit of being there, day in and day out for the auto trade and the drivers of the West Kaipara, which spans decades, but most will agree that after so long fulfilling the vital role that a little rest and relaxation are well earned. Not only have Ken and Karyn seen vehicles change from carburettor-fueled, lowtech classics to modern, computerised machines, they have also seen their store go through changes to reflect the

changing times. The transition to join the Auto One group in 1993 boosted their buying power and allowed for greater scope — though from day one the Inders have always offered more than simply a parts store. While well-wishers will doubtless recall those times when a vital part from over the Auto One counter saved their day, the other half of the formula here has always been about putting more value into each drive. That’s because, in a part of the country famed for its great outdoors, Ken and Karyn have also been a source for camping, fishing and holiday essentials.
“We’ll miss the contact with our customers and tourists,” says Karyn, while Ken admits to having mixed emotions about this new change. But as to regrets — there are none here. “People say not to work with your spouse,” Ken jokes, “but for us, it’s been great!” That’s a sentiment shared by Karyn, who says that it’s been a real privilege to work alongside Ken for all those 35 years. Both wish to express their gratitude and thanks to all their wonderful, loyal customers, their friends in the business community, and their suppliers for a wonderful career in the auto trade. ¢

Author, teacher and father of four, Jody Reynolds is a busy man, but through self-discipline and determination he now has five short stories under his belt and is working on his first novel.

Jody achieved his lifelong goal of becoming a published author by setting his alarm for 4.30am so he could write before his children got out of bed. “I’d dreamt of writing for years, and I’d made excuses that I didn’t have time. Getting up that early was hard for the first few weeks — but now I look forward to it, and it’s become a habit,” he said. He has now self-published five short stories under the name JB Reynolds — The Golden Cockroach, Riding Shotgun, Square Pegs, What Friends are For and The Art of Cigarette Smoking, which he published when he was at Otago University. For any other aspiring writers out there he says: “If you’re waiting for the right time, it will never come. The key is to write daily. If you’re willing to self-publish, then there are lots of opportunities.” His stories are available on his website jbreynolds.net as well as Amazon and iTunes. ¢

Technology has brought the world into our homes in a way, which we could not have envisioned even thirty years ago. While the promises of the tech guru of the 1980s — robot butlers, flying cars, immortality — may be pipe dreams, for now, information technology has exceeded our wildest expectations. It’s even gotten to the point where your local newspaper can become truly interactive. Many of us carry a smartphone in our pockets, and through this medium, we can have full access to a massive store of information. In fact, your phone is now hundreds of times more powerful than the computers used to control NASA’s moon missions and can access more information than the sum of every book ever written, all stacked up. Of course, we largely use this incredible power for playing games or looking at pictures of humorous cats. There’s another trick waiting to be unlocked. On the pages around this story, you’ll see many curiously shaped square ‘barcodes’. These so-called QR codes can be scanned by your phone to unlock videos, facts, photos, reviews and facebook pages, letting you get much more out of a story or advert — for free! To use them, open your mobile phone, and enable mobile data -- then go to the iTunes Store (Apple Users) or Google Play Store (Android/Samsung users). Search for ‘QR Code reader’ — this is a FREE download of a small program, which should install quickly. It will place a new app icon on your phone — ‘QR code reader’. Open this, and scan one of those handy codes, centring it in the ‘crosshairs,’ which show up on screen. You will hear a beep, and then

Welcome to Mangawhai Cable commercially operational The new trans-Pacific Hawaiki cable went commercially operational last week, and Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media minister Clare Curran says it will improve and enhances New Zealand’s international connectivity. The construction of the fibre-optic deep-sea Hawaiki cable system took 27 months and is connected to New Zealand via Mangawhai. The cable links New Zealand, Australia, part of the Pacific and the United States. “This new 15,000 kilometre cable improves capacity, competition and resilience and sets us up for the future,” Ms Curran says. “For consumers and businesses hungry for more and more data it means faster, better internet, and fewer bottlenecks, particularly when data is streamed from overseas. The Hawaiki cable complements our growing domestic infrastructure and provides greater resilience during disasters by giving us an additional physical data link to the rest of the world, which takes a different route than other existing cables.
The government allocated an initial $15 million of capital, as part of a tenancy contract between Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network and Hawaiki. “The cable brings 43 Terabits per second of new capacity to the Pacific region, several times the current levels of Australia and New Zealand combined. American Samoa is already connected to the cable, and there’s provision for connections with other Pacific nations,” Ms Curran says. “It also means data-intensive research can be easily transferred anywhere in the world. “In a nutshell, it’s a faster and bigger internet connection to the rest of the world, which can support bandwidth-hungry applications such as cloud services and real-time content delivery.” ¢

On the 1st of June 2018 an official opening of the new upgraded funeral home had it’s opening under its new name. We were lucky enough to have our local member of parliament Matt King with us to declare the building open. Mr King was very excited and enthusiastic about investment in the community. Our mayor Dr Jason Smith was also attendance for this historic occasion. Morris & Morris has been part of the Northland community for over 60 years and it was important to us to provide a space for the people of the Kaipara District which allowed families to spend time with their loved one, in a comfortable, safe environment. Morris & Morris purchased Hart Funerals in 2013 and it was decided that the new building opening was the best time to officially change the name to Morris & Morris. We wanted the new building to represent the quality of service families are entitled to except when they require the services of their local funeral home. Our funeral home is your funeral home, we live locally, we are your neighbours and friends. It’s important to us that you feel truly looked after, when you visit us. In the spirit of our transparent community relationship we invite you to please stop by for a cup of coffee or a tea and come see our new home.

Chrome in the winter sun u by Andy Bryenton
The ‘winterless north’ may have a few surprises up its sleeve when it comes to cold and rain, despite the name. However, it’s nothing to daunt a group of classic, custom and just plain interesting motorbike owners committing to a weekend of fun in the west Kaipara.
It’s all for a good cause, as the riders assemble to show off their artfully chopped, airbrushed, tuned and accessorised rides at the Northern Wairoa Hotel on Saturday, July 28. Then, they’re off on a run through the scenic Waipoua Forest to Opononi, followed up with a night of fun and live music at the old historic hotel, which will be their base of operations. Along the way, they will be raising money for the local Girl Guides, boosting their fundraising efforts with a handy top-up. In fact, the fun begins on Friday as the first of the intrepid riders head
into town. There will be a fun Karaoke night as folks from far afield arrive for Saturday morning’s ‘show and shine’. Everyone is invited to this celebration of motorcycle culture, and of course, local riders are invited to bring their own machines down for the public to appreciate. The organisers of this rally don’t discriminate, either — there’s no strict rule that all the bikes taking part have to be American cruisers or British classics. There’s room for everyone, so come along and get amongst the action! ¢
The NORTHERN WAIROA HOTEL
Celebrating an autos milestone
p When Karyn and Ken Inder opened their first marine and auto store, the price of a new Ford Cortina GTE — the top of the line — was $3,850. That was a sharp price for one of the best cars on the road in an era of Zephyrs, Anglias, HQ Holdens, Austins and Leylands. “Those were the ‘boy racer’ cars back then,’ reminisces Ken — “We had to keep a large stock of clutches, because they were constantly getting blown out. At one point, 40 on the shelf at one time!” Automotive technology has changed, along with trends like Saturday trading and the move to computerised inventories. Moreover, the husband and wife team who have served Dargaville for 35 years know that drivers themselves still require a bit of assistance now and then to keep their machines running smoothly. They’d like to offer heartfelt thanks to all of their loyal customers and the reps who have helped them along the way for over three decades — as they make plans for a relaxing retirement starting in spring.

Isuzu’s D-Max ute has won hearts and minds in the rural heartland of New Zealand by being one tough customer.
Congratulations on your great service over three decades. You have been excellent to work with and you’ve earned some rest and recreation after 35 years.
Godfrey Motors
Now the hard-working utility has undergone a procedure most of its owners would never consider — a bit of a facelift. As the new look D-Max rolls out, it’s a good time to reflect on just why those who drive these machines are not keen to let them go. It is, of course, the message behind Isuzu’s creative marketing campaign for the fresh-faced D-Max. They’re not talking about the bold new lines of the grille, the new, swept back headlamps with their daytime running lights, or even the generous acreage of chrome, which lights up the personality of their on-road, off-road, go-anywhere machine. As well they could because it’s a handsome combo. No, instead they’re asking staunch D-Max owners to grab a new edition — just so some other lucky soul can drive their existing ute. It’s a cheeky plan, but one borne out by anecdotes and evidence. People

who buy the D-Max obviously enjoy the chunky, hard-to-punish internals, the mountainous 480Nm of torque from its honest-to-goodness truck-strength diesel, and the lack of lag from its variable geometry turbo. Perhaps they’re swayed instead by the way it handles neat and precise on the tarmac but also thumbs its nose at mud, stream beds, gravel and sand when the going gets rough. Because D-Max drivers are sort of like Harley Davidson enthusiasts; in

that they are very reluctant to switch to anything else. With a crisp, purposeful interior and the heritage of one of the world’s top truck builders clearly apparent just under the skin, there’s a lot to like about the Isuzu D-Max. Moreover, tongue in cheek though it is, their new campaign has a bit of a point. If nature can’t break them, and drivers won’t part with them, you know that this is one to watch — and to test drive. ¢

Japan dream realised
Canine parvovirus
u by Ayla Miller
u by Jill Dickie
Former martial arts instructor and stroke survivor Hinemoa Hunia is about to cross one more item off her bucket list and visit her Ninjitsu Master in Japan.
A recent outbreak of canine parvovirus in the Bay of Islands area has prompted concerns and is a reminder to Kaipara dog owners, with either domestic or working dogs, to ensure their animals have current vaccinations.
Hinemoa worked as a nurse at Dargaville Hospital for 18 years, and during this time she trained under Ninjitsu master Dr Masaaki Hatsumi in Auckland. A few years later after completing her basic training to become a policewoman she had a stroke at the age of 35, which turned her world upside down. “She’s an inspiration to everyone, and she’s been an active volunteer in many organisations in Dargaville,” said friend and travel companion, Bev Hart. With a little research, Bev was able to find more information about Dr Masaaki Hatsumi and set about fundraising to help make p Hinemoa Hunui is off to Japan to visit her Ninjitsu Master Hinemoa’s dream a reality. instructor Dr Masaaki Hatsumi Hinemoa, her friend Viv Hollis and Bev, will travel to the town Hinemoa has also put in $1,020 of of Noda on the outskirts of Tokyo in her own money. Parvovirus enteritis is a potentially life-threatening viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, resulting in vomiting and diarrhoea. There is currently no direct treatment for the virus, and for most dogs, therapy is generally supportive but unrewarding. The disease is extremely infectious between dogs and can be carried on owners’ clothes, shoes, skin, and in their vehicle, though humans can not contract it. It can survive in the soil, withstanding extremes in heat and cold for up to 10 years. “The more dogs that are vaccinated, the less likely we will have outbreaks of parvo in the future,” said Dargaville veterinary surgeon, Joanna Bruin. “To prevent the occurrence p Dr Joanna Bruin showing the simple process of of this potentially fatal disease, a vaccination it is essential to vaccinate puppies from the age of six weeks to cages and pens should be properly ensure they receive three vaccinations disinfected and cleaned. before they are 12 weeks old, then Pups that have not completed their annually for the rest of their life.
