“We teach flying to all ages. The only stipulation is that you have a genuine interest in flying,” says instructor, Murray Foster. Bill flies once a week at the club. “It’s relaxing and keeps your mind

and senses sharp — good therapy when you’re getting older and the cost is well worth it,” says Bill. The last time Bill flew was in a tiger moth in 1945. “With a little push from Murray I

decided to take it up again after 50 years, and it’s one of the best decisions I have made.” Liam became interested in flying when he met a friend’s father who is an airline engineer for Air New Zealand. “He enjoys taking off and landing the aeroplane and flying over our dairy farm at Ruawai,” says Liam’s mum, Jane Sanford. “It is a pleasure to have a youngster learning to fly. Liam is competent in handling the aircraft and finding his way around the area and his technical knowledge is good,” says instructor, Dennis Williams. Tom is also a regular at the club and is set to take his first solo flight. continued on page 3…

The Northland Regional Council has launched a far-reaching new mapping programme with a mail drop across the district, with the stated aim of preserving ‘outstanding’ natural landmarks. The plan has not come without controversy however, as some landowners express their concerns about access to valuable resources — perhaps to be put out of their reach.

The mail out, entitled ‘Have we got it right?’ is the beginning of a year-long consultative process by the NRC. It’s a legal requirement for the council to get in line with government environmental legislation, but the NRC is the only council in New Zealand taking into consideration the economic impact of the mapping programme. continued on page 2…

 The McCain big red veggie truck paid a visit to Paparoa Primary School recently and Tony, the ‘grower’ spoke to enthusiastic young gardeners. Room 3 students had this to say, “we learnt how vegetables grow — they suck up all the nutrients out of the ground with their roots and when we eat the veges we get those nutrients and grow big and strong. Our vege patch has just been relocated to a sunny part of our school and we are looking forward to growing lots of our own veges. Some favourites are carrots, broccoli, potatoes and sweet corn. After he talked to us we went outside to admire the magnificent McCain’s Chevrolet hot rod. We were all very impressed as he revved it before driving away.”

www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz Malaysia in July: DHS Leadership Trip The smell of spices, the shrill cries of Indian shop vendors and savage heat greeted the Dargaville High School group as they descended from their tour bus at the Batu Caves following a night of heady excitement at Changi Airport. Despite the lack of sleep the entire group climbed the 272 narrow steps into the sacred Hindu caves. An art lesson followed where the painting of silks was demonstrated using a batik style. A gentle introduction into the culinary delights of Malaysian food had us lunching at an Old Town White Coffee House and then a quick trip to the Royal Selangor Pewter factory where students listened to a rote English monologue — best described as reading without expression. All this before we reached our first hotel on Day One. No time for a rest although a brief swim was enjoyed and we were off again to Tyme Square and a steam boat dinner. Despite the most explicit lessons on meeting times and ‘don’t be late’ the inevitable happened. Off trundled the bus to the hotel and two staff gathered up the stragglers for Kuala Lumpur at night by taxi. Day One finally ended at 10.30pm Malaysia time. Mrs Hayhurst and her family had met us at the airport. Her parents, Bayly (Bayly’s Beach) 5 months old and gorgeous Lilly at 3 years, Steven our bus driver and Evon our tour guide were waiting with the bus. The bus became our classroom. Malaysia became a kaleidoscope of culture as we travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Sitiawan and then over to the heritage listed Pangkor Island. Twilight banana boating and dining on the beach late at

night allowed students to rejuvenate and rest even if it was in a swimming pool by day. On the way to Penang we saw the pampering of the swallows and huge plantations for palm trees. We experienced smog closing in as it descended from bush fires in Indonesia where jungle was being cleared to make way for more Palm trees. As a group of travellers the resilience of each student was tested and all were forced beyond their comfort zones. Each student developed aspects of their character and adapted to another cultural context in ways they would not have believed possible prior to the trip. The final night of the trip ended after a spectacular performance of Malaysian dancers and the haunting lyrics of the national anthem combined with visual images that the students could relate too. DHS Malaysia 2012 was an amazing experience. All of the students were united in expressing their thanks to their families, school, community and friends in Malaysia for their support and assistance in making DHS Malaysia 2012 happen.

New project puts landmarks on the map Areas determined to be of ‘outstanding’ natural beauty or significance will be mapped, with the maps incorporated into subsequent district and regional plans. The aim is to protect such sites from tree felling, earthworks, building and development which could have a negative impact on the environment. NRC Regional Policy and Development Committee Chairman Ian Walker is insistent that the concerns of landowners will be addressed. “We have included private property rights and economic impacts in the policy statement as we view economic wellbeing as a fundamental principle along with the environment,” he says. “It’s about finding the right balance.” But critics of the mapping system point to issues of land ownership and use as reasons why the NRC has not ‘got it right’ at all. Wayne Ward, a trustee of Baldrock Quarry near Kaiwaka, says that the programme will effectively take away control of his land. “If the property is considered to be an outstanding natural feature the council can remove it from the owner’s

control and use with no consideration for the loss to the owner,” he says. “The property owner has to choose whether he is prepared to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars defending his case in court, or walk away.” “Of course, there will be some compromise on property rights,” says Ian Walker — and with a year of submissions and consultation ahead, the NRC are keen to hear the views and opinions of landowners in order to fine tune the mapping system. “Baldrock Quarry has huge economic potential for the Kaipara and the region and I totally agree with Wayne Ward that if this economic opportunity is not allowed to be realised then the government should compensate the Trust and the region,” he says. “If we are to take the region from the bottom of the economic ladder and stop our people leaving for Western Australia we need to have a regulatory framework that allows innovation and initiative.” Contact the Northland Regional Council on 0800 002 004, or visit www. nrc.govt.nz/rpsmaps  Funding supported from EECA’s ENERGYWISETM Programme.  Heat Pumps.  New Homes & Renovations.  Ceiling & Underfloor Specialists.  Cost Effective.  Free No-obligation quotes.  Ventilation systems.  LED lighting.

New sponsor for arts awards New rates struck for Kaipara  by Kim Munro

Entries are now open for the Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Arts Awards, an annual event organized by the Mangawhai Arts Association, the Dargaville Arts Association, the Kauri Museum in association with the Kaipara District Council. The awards have a new sponsor, Gilmore Brown Ltd, who are specialists in chartered accountancy and business advisory services, with branches in both Dargaville and Whangarei. “We like to support worthy community initiatives where we can and are pleased to be able to help,” says director of Gilmore Brown, Chantal Gilmore. There are four categories, painting and drawing, photography and printing, adornments and three-dimensional which includes pottery, sculpture, glass and woodwork. The awards are open to Kaipara residents and ratepayers with a maximum of two entries per artist and prizes of $500 for each category. Opening night and prize giving will be held Friday, August 31 at 6pm at the Kauri Museum.

 Chantal Gilmore of Gilmore Brown very happy to support community projects

The museum will also be holding an exhibition of the works, open to the public free of charge, from September 1 to 27. Entries close August 24. For entry forms email jbgrover@clear.net.nz, or collect from Mangawhai Information Centre or Muddy Waters Gallery, Dargaville

At a recent special council meeting, the Kaipara District Council voted to reduce the previously proposed average rates hike of 31 per cent, opting instead to spread the rate increase over a two year period, with an average rates rise for the upcoming 2012/13 year of 19.8 per cent and a rise of 9.9 per cent for the following year. The reduced rate was approved along with other changes to the draft LPT in response to a district-wide outcry, including public protests, almost 3000 submissions on the LTP as well as an on-going rates strike. A growing number of Kaipara ratepayers are refusing to pay their rates as part of a protest at the $80plus million council debt and projected rate rises. Council spokeswoman Barbara Ware said council estimates there are 900 additional non-paying ratepayers this year, and of those, approximately 800 originate from Mangawhai, however, they could not confirm what proportion of non-payers were striking ratepayers.

Young and old flying high In 2006, a battle with cancer brought Tom to Dargaville and after some years convalescing, Tom embarked on a life change. “I found I was wasting my life so I made two decisions. One was to gain my recreational pilots license and the other was to buy a yacht and learn how to sail. Of course, I’ve been told that I’m a fool and an idiot,” says Tom. “We have lunch there on Saturdays. There is a great fellowship at the club.” Tom lives on his new yacht in the Whangarei town basin, is learning to sail and plans to circumnavigate New Zealand. The club provides all theory and practical tuition free of charge. MORTGAGEE TENDER

A decision was made to cap operating costs for all wastewater schemes at $1,230 with the Mangawhai Wastewater Scheme debt being repaid over a 30-year period rather than the original repayment plan of 10 years. Wastewater will now be charged based on council’s new definition for SUIPs rather than the previous modified SUIP or unit of demand. Previous targeted rates for the swimming pool, town hall and town development have been merged into one Dargaville Amenities Rate for the former Dargaville Borough and Hobson County, with rural properties paying one third of the urban rate. Ratepayers will also now contribute to the upkeep of Kaipara’s roads via a targeted rate with 30 per cent of council roading revenue coming from a uniform charge across all ratepayers and the remaining 70 per cent from a differential roading rate based on landusage. The draft LTP will be reviewed by Audit New Zealand and is expected to be adopted late August.

It’s that time of year again for designers to get creative and enter their best work in the Paparoa Wearable Arts Gala (WAG), an annual event that traditionally attracts a huge crowd on the night. Entries are now open for WAG which is to be held at the Paparoa War Memorial Hall, Saturday, October 6 from 7pm. WAG this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Paparoa and Kaipara settlements. “There will be a special opening on the night which brings together children of the Kaipara to recreate pioneers settling the area,” says event organiser, Pat George. Design categories this year include spirit of the NZ bush, recycled technology 21st century, vintage and Victorian, fantasia, and fast forward to the future. Entry sections include 6 to 14 years, 15 to 19 years and novice 20-plus years with judging criteria based on authenticity and creativity.

A better way to grow your business Business owners would be the first to agree that they’d like to grow their enterprise with the use of modern marketing techniques - but getting there sometimes seems a challenge, with technology and the time pressures of running a business combining to make such plans seemingly inaccessible. Good advice, mentoring and a proven plan of action are the way forward, and now a new business in the Kaipara offers just these valuable services to up and coming entrepreneurs. Gavin Walker knows what it’s like to run a successful small business. He first contacted the Better Business Institute for some timely advice about growing his panel and paint shop, and the skills he

learned from this professional mentoring and training company so impressed him that he returned to pass them on. The Better Business Institute is dedicated to growing small to medium sized businesses through training in marketing, sales, and business development. Gavin joins over 120 Business Coaches worldwide, offering hands-on assistance and proven strategies to boost profits. His own experience as a small business owner, and the success he’s enjoyed using the tools which the Better Business Institute armed him with are testament to just what an impact a little mentoring and advice can do. For new ideas and a fresh perspective, talk to Gavin today.

Good advice for new home buyers  by Andy Bryenton

Buying a first home is an enterprise fraught with excitement and trepidation for most — the chance to make your own mark on a place that’s really yours, or to break free of paying rent and to invest in the future But there are pitfalls for the unwary, and the legal jargon, the real estate market, and the sometimes conflicting advice from TV pundits, friends and family can prove a little daunting. That’s why the BNZ bank in Dargaville has teamed up with well known local real estate professionals Ray White to host an evening just for first home buyers on the 1st of August. The informal, informative discussion will focus on demystifying the home buying process, and making it as easy as possible to find the right home at the right price for you and your family. With the real estate market rebounding from 2008’s low,

it’s a great time to say goodbye to the landlord and invest! With a wealth of knowledge between them, Chad and his team from the BNZ and Jean Johnson and her colleagues from Ray White’s Dargaville branch will be able to answer all your questions and hopefully make the whole journey from house hunter to home owner an easy one. When it’s all laid out in steps the process toward building equity and starting an investment in property seems far less intimidating. Come along to the BNZ on the 1st of August at 5.30pm to explore your options.

Better Business Institute “Turning Everyday People into Entrepreneurs” Better Business Institute has been established to serve the business community by providing affordable sales, marketing and business development products, training and value added services.

The boys of Beecroft’s under 11’s side played magnificently to take the trophy in a 12-10 victory, while their under 10s enjoyed a 37-0 success against the Ruawai lads. And while it was all rivalry on the field, the visit was great fun for the Aussie kids who came to visit Ruawai, even taking part in T.V. cooking show Café Secrets! “The billets were really nice boys,” says Ruawai Aussie Tour Secretary Sam Panoho. “Most of the ones billeted by townies got up very early and went out to a farm to feed calves or look at the milking process. They thought that was really cool. They loved the bush walk at Bickers’ farm and climbing Tokatoka on Friday afternoon; that took a while — getting 80 odd kids up and down! That was followed by a game of capture the flag back at Bickers’ farm.” The celebrated country hospitality

of Ruawai was on show as Steve Wrathall worked his culinary magic, serving up a sizzling spitroast for the teams and their parents on Saturday for the prizegiving. Special thanks go to Countdown supermarket, Fonterra and Kaipara Kumara for their generous donations of food and drink… after all, nobody should leave the Kaipara without sampling our local kai! Sam Panoho was philosophical about the Australian team’s victory, seeing the whole experience as a win for the boys. “The trophy has gone, but we will bring it back when our Aussie Tour 2013 boys visit Sydney in mid-April next year. Some of the boys that we hosted will still be part of the Beecroft team so our boys will be billeted with them — that’s always a highlight, the boys look forward to catching up with each other. Boys from past tours come to watch the game too. “It’s pretty cool — there are some great friendships formed between the parents as well.”

 Warren presenting his unique show to the international guests

Tour organisers, The Friendship Force, are regular visitors to the Kumara Box and recently brought with them a group from Cyprus. “The idea is to give people a taste of the Kaipara. We meet lots of Kiwis from all over New Zealand and we really enjoy having international guests,” says Warren. The performance is preceded by a tour through the packing sheds where Warren explains what a kumara is and how they’re grown and stored. The group is then led down narrow paths between the many storage trays and into the

museum-like theatre and await the show to start. Wearing a Maori cloak, Barry Searle, local conservationist, begins with a talk on the history, geography and flora and fauna of the Kaipara region. This was followed by Warren’s unique stories about the kumara, which are revealed only to those who watch the show. “They enjoyed every minute of it, although the interpretation was a bit tricky at times. The organisers have made another booking for November with visitors from Australia this time,” says Mavis.

The theatre is staging two one-act plays and is holding auditions on July 31, 7.30pm at 241 Victoria Street, Dargaville. One of the plays is a classic comedy by Tom Stoppard called ‘The Real Inspector Hound’. “The theme is ‘Who is the real Inspector Hound?’ and is a spoof of an Agatha Christie who dunnit murder mystery,” says theatre member, Graham Pollard. The second play is ‘Shadows’ which is a drama by Josephine Carter. The theatre is calling for eight men and eight women across all ages and all skill levels and promises lots of fun for those involved. “There are no especially big roles in one-act productions so everyone has a fair time on stage.” The plays will run for three days at the end of September. Cinema receives helping hand The new Anzac Cinema has been awarded a grant of over $60,000 by the Lotteries Commission

“The grant will be used to assist with the purchase of equipment and goes a long way toward helping us get started,” says Dargaville Cinema Trust member, Josie Scott. Building work is continuing on the interior of the old Dargaville library in Hokianga Road to convert it to a multipurpose auditorium, including a 62-seat movie theatre. All the work is ‘under the floor’ at present with the foundations receiving a much-needed upgrade. “Skilled tradespeople have generously donated their time, including our project manager Darryl Tregidga along with Craig Burrell from C&C Electrical who has made sure all the electrical requirements are safe following the demolition.” A small group are also working on colours and interior design which will be finalised by the end of the month when orders will be placed for seating, flooring and other items. “There are also plans to have Kaipara-made goodies available while watching the films.” Entries in the third annual Dargaville Cinema Trust film competition will be showcased on Sunday, August 5 at 5pm at the Lighthouse Church, Normanby Street. There are eight entries from children, teenagers and adults. Judges will be selecting the best film as well as prizes for the audience.

St John Introduction to CPR evening  by Julia West

Mangawhai St John is running a free Introduction to Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation evening on 31 July in response to strong community interest. The use of defibrillators will be covered along with the basics of how to attend to a person who is experiencing a cardiac arrest. “Defibrillators save lives,” says Martin Davies, Team Manager for St John, Mangawhai. “Just last week the St John ambulance was called out at 6am one morning to a person having a cardiac arrest in the Kaipara area. When we arrived, a family member was already administering CPR. The St John paramedics delivered five shocks over a period of 10 minutes which returned the patient’s heart to a

normal rhythm. The patient was then flown by helicopter to Auckland Hospital. This shows the importance of immediately starting non-stop CPR on a person suffering from a heart attack, and the effectiveness of delivering shocks from a defibrillator as early as possible.” The better informed the general public are about CPR and the location and use of defibrillators, the better for the community at large.

It’s definitely no toy Isuzu’s new D Max ute is causing quite a stir in motoring circles In a world of utes trending toward the extremes of the spectrum (either engineered to ride like a car, or built as a spartan workhorse) the D Max on first impressions appears to have a foot in each camp — it’s a good looking beast with a flash of chrome, rakishly angled headlamps and an aggressive stance emphasized by flared wheel arches and chunky alloys.

“The D Max is bigger, stronger, tougher, and visibly so.” It’s also quite a serious contender as far as comfort goes — the four door version I took for a drive (courtesy of Moore Cars in Whangarei) more than accommodated a man-sized frame in the back without the need for extra knees, and the driver’s seat was more comfortable than that of some family sedans. The real advantage here, however, lies deep inside the three-litre common rail turbo diesel engine of the new D Max. It’s not one you can see when appreciating the aesthetic impact of the vehicle, but it’s more important than all the chrome in the world… it’s the fact that this ute

was built by a truck maker. Isuzu know trucks. Big trucks. So while other ute makers have scaled up their cars and added a back deck (including sometimes using the same or similar engine design for utes and cars), Isuzu have scaled down a truck. If ‘scaled down’ is the right term. Take the turbo for example. To eliminate lag, the D Max uses a variable geometry system as pioneered by Porsche. This gives the ute a smooth acceleration curve which slides through the gears effortlessly and without so much as a grunt of diesel exertion. The doors shut like bank vaults, the tailgate feels like it could support a bull elephant, and as for the parts which make up the gutsy engine… When you go to take a look at the new Isuzu (and anyone looking at a new ute would be advised to book a place), ask to see the comparisons in design and weight with the parts used in comparable

vehicles. From the cast roller rockers to the piston big ends, everything about the D Max is bigger, stronger, tougher, and visibly so. From a company which builds serious metal for the world’s trucking fleet, you’d expect no less. So, does the D Max really have a foot in both camps? Is it neither a car with a big flat deck or a truck with less of a step up? Not at all. It’s a fusion of the best of both worlds, built very much as the dealer press emphasises as ‘a tool, not a toy’. And it’ll last far longer than most of the tools in the shop as well.

Full size, full power — tiny price!  by our Motoring Correspondent

Farming is at its core a business, and investments made by farmers in new equipment are weighed up very carefully to see if they’ll provide a good return When it comes to ATVs and quad bikes this is all the more pertinent — farmers need a reliable and rugged workhorse that is both dependable and inexpensive to run. Another consideration is power to weight — or rather power to bulk. Sometimes a huge, powerful machine lacks the ability to go where smaller, more agile ATVs can… making it tough to decide on the perfect tool for the job. Enter the Polaris Sportsman 400 — and don’t let that 455cc engine

capacity fool you into thinking that it lacks muscle. In a world of big 700 and 800cc monsters this is the proverbial bantamweight punching far harder than you

would expect, and that’s largely down to very clever design. For starters, the Sportsman has one of the most intelligent chassis and suspension setups on the market — including a unique independent rear suspension system providing an unparalleled smooth ride even over very rough terrain. Almost a foot of ground clearance means that the Sportsman can scramble over even the gnarliest mud and boulders, and its light weight means it won’t bog down.

MECHANICAL REPAIRS at

PH. 09 431 8288

Innovation has been key to the success of Polaris in the highly competitive quad bike market, and little tricks like a rearfacing, high mounted radiator (which won’t clog up with mud and overheat), halogen lighting and some very versatile storage front and back allow the Kiwi farmer to wring even more value out of this smart little machine. Combined front and back rack capacity tips the scales at over 120kgs, and the Sportsman 400 can tow even more — up to 555 kilos. In a lot of ways the Sportsman 400 is a ‘back to base principles’ quad bike — a return to the rugged and agile little machine that farmers embraced a decade ago. Shorn of the weight, excess baggage and sometimes counterproductive muscle of its bigger rivals, there’s a real sense that you could never push the gutsy Polaris too hard… after all, it is manufactured by a company who also supply rescue teams and armies! About all that’s really missing from the Sportsman 400 is a hefty price tag — these machines have been called ‘the best value ATV on earth’, and a visit to your local dealership will definitely illustrate why!

Oliver — You’ve got to get a ticket or two ‘Oliver’, the blockbuster musical, opens this week for Otamatea Repertory Theatre in Maungaturoto The show is a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale of an orphan who runs away from the orphanage and hooks up with a group of pickpockets and their elderly mentor, Fagin. Lionel Bart’s sensational score boasts a string of hits — Food Glorious Food, Consider Yourself, You’ve Got to Pick-a-Pocket or Two, I’d Do Anything, Oom Pah Pah, As Long As He Needs Me — to name a few, and audiences are sure to be asking for more! ‘Oliver’ premiered in the West End in 1960, enjoying a long run, a successful Broadway production in 1963 and further tours and revivals.

It was made into a musical film in 1968. Major London revivals played from 1994–1998 and again from 2008–2011. The lead role of Oliver is played by Maungaturoto 10-year-old, Denzal Peeni, with Waipu’s Jamie Lymburn — also 10 — as his understudy. Father and daughter, Nat and Molly Curnow team up as Fagin and Dodger, respectively with another father and daughter team, David and Zelda Sims portraying Bill Sykes and Dodger understudy, respectively. ORT newcomer, Kate Davison, who teaches at Dargaville High School is the ‘tart-with-the-heart’, Nancy and her side-kick, Bet, is played by Elizabeth Harris. Ian Sturt and Kathy Bygrave play the comic relief of Mr Bumble and Widow Corney. The 47-strong ‘Oliver’ cast comes from all over

9

the Kaipara and beyond. Their commitment to the show is huge with a lot of people travelling great distances to be a part of the team. Vocal coach, Maura Flower says, “The cast has put in an enormous amount of work and is eagerly awaiting opening night.” ‘Oliver’ will run over four weekends and if you want to ‘get a ticket or two’ then go to either www.ort.org.nz or Tony’s Lotto See our advert on page 11 Shop in Maungaturoto.

Historic Kaipara

A Significant Year

A Good Decision

by Paul Campbell

by Brian Eastwood

Following the successful Easter Weekend celebrations of the 150th anniversar y of the landing of the first wave of European settlers in the Northern Kaipara at Port Albert, two more communities are deep in the planning of their own commemorations of the event

Dargaville’s Municipal Chambers in Hokianga Road has long served as a building of many uses for the people of Northern Wairoa. A 1916 poll gave ratepayers a chance to have their say on three proposals. One idea was to spend £2,500 to buy a section and house belonging to former mayor Fred Day as a site for municipal chambers. It was given the go-ahead. Although there was Photo courtesy Dargaville Museum Opened in 1923 the Municipal Chambers housed the librar y, reading much opposition in room and Council offices downstairs, with engineer and Council Chambers above Council it was carried on Mayor R. E Hornblow’s casting and public meeting rooms, youth Chambers was blended into the vote. Finally completed in 1923 the When Now the wheel has turned full Dargaville Museum two-storied Chambers were a decided to shift from Normanby circle. Over the years the upstairs Borough Council eventually where the first library operated. area has been used variously became part of Kaipara District It was a good decision by Mayor as dance and dinner venue, and moved across the road to the Hornblow when he used his conference centre, service club former County office. Municipal casting vote back in 1922.

Paparoa has comprehensive plans that include a town parade through the ‘village in the valley, with the accent on pioneer costumes and memorabilia, harbour excursions and a wide range of activities culminating in a banquet featuring the best of Kaipara cuisine. Paparoa was settled later than Port Albert, as surveys of land grants — 100 acres per adult and 20 per child, had not been completed. Those heading to the area in fact spent several months at Pahi waiting to move on. As a result what is now a quiet harbour-side settlement was once a bustling community complete with a busy harbour and extensive

gardens to feed the locals as well as harbourside residents further afield, with the safe anchorage of the Arapoa River a centre of local commerce. The Albertlanders made their way to Maungaturoto, but this settlement in fact took another year to establish and as a result anniversary celebrations there will not take place until next year. But work is already well underway, with extensive town centre renovations and the creation of a garden in Hundall Street near the service station. Community stalwart Albie Paton reports that things are well on track. “We are immersed in upgrading

the original landing area where the settlers came ashore and other infrastructure which will make a difference to Maungaturoto well into the future after our anniversary celebrations are over. It is a great opportunity for us to take the community forward as we remember our past.” A town parade commemorating the pioneer settlers will be a focal point here too. In all, some 3,000 Albertlanders sailed to New Zealand, some making their way to the Kaipara by bush tracks, some by boat up the tidal waterways, but for many the

harsh bush environment was a far cry from home, with the result that many returned to Auckland and points south, leaving a few hundred hardy souls to break in their new land. Today, they have thousands of descendents throughout New Zealand, and around the world, with many returning for the coming celebrations. A graphic account of the settlement of the northern Kaipara is available in Images from Albertland, featuring more than 100 fullplate photographs, and available from selected local outlets.

A Busy Barquentine by Brian Eastwood

Ask to look in the Kaipara Harbour Master’s and Customs logbooks held in the vault at Dargaville Museum and you will find a long list of ship’s Captains who signed the Pouto visitor’s book Captain A. Watchlin arrived as master of the barquentine Laura in April 1922 and two days after Christmas Day he was there again in the Louis Theriault. She was a schooner he had bought to take the place of Laura on the Kaipara Australia timber run. Of all the intercolonial sailing ship skippers who had called in over the years, Watchlin was the last. In November of that year Laura was laid up at Sydney to be converted into a coal hulk. Built in Denmark at Nordby Faro in 1889, the three masted 326 tons barquentine had a busy life in the south Pacific.

A smart sailer sometimes taking less than a fortnight to cross the Tasman from Newcastle to Kaipara, she often carried a quarter of a million feet of timber to Australia and five hundred tons of coal back again. At other times the cargo went to the South Island where she then loaded produce for her trip up to Kaipara. Occasional voyages took her to the Pacific Islands and elsewhere. In 1919 Laura caused a stir when arriving at Wellington Heads from San Francisco with a hold full of case oil for the Vacuum Oil Company. She had struck a reef with the crew of eleven pumping all night to counter the water

rising at the rate of two feet an hour. She was towed in to port and so avoiding what could have been a Rena style catastrophe. Even more exciting for some of the crew was a mid-Tasman June storm when she lost her fore-top-gallant mast and rigging with some of the crew still aloft. Fortunately no man was hurt. It was noted that no other vessel in Australasia had changed hands as many times as Laura. Shipping company owners knew her to be a profit maker. Soon after the start of World War One she had sold for £1,000, later resold for £1,500, then £4,000 and in 1918 for £8,000. It was an

increase of £7,000 in her value in just four years. Her immediate future had been guaranteed in 1910 when owners E. D. Pike and Co secured a threeyear contract for Laura and three sister ships to deliver 18 million feet of kahikatea to Sydney for the to manufacture of butter boxes. In the middle of those deliveries a downturn of trade in Kaipara meant that the tug Sterling was laid up. Rio, one of Laura’s partners in the venture, was held up in harbour for seven days and Laura for ten days waiting for a tow.
