“The Tinopai Voluntary Rural Fire Force held its inaugural honours event at the community hall in Tinopai,” said Rural Controller Nigel Bernie. “Among a number of firefighters awarded at the event was local fire brigade and coastguard identity Allan Crabb, now retired, who received a Forest and Rural Fire Association of New Zealand (FRFANZ) 25-Year Gold Star and three 3-Year Gold Bars for a total of 34 years of service.” Commenting afterwards Allan revealed his grandfather Goerge Crabb served Devonport Fire Brigade for 35 years, and his father John Crabb at Laingholm for nine years. “As a special surprise for Allan Crabb, senior firefighter Haydon Crabb (Allan’s son) and his partner qualified firefighter Annie Soper from the Milton Volunteer Fire Brigade were at the awards,” said Nigel. The couple each has 14 years of service. Allan Crabb recalls many callouts for the Tinopai firemen with a memorable incident at the local school. “A remote meter reading device had ignited and the school reported the smell of burning plastic. Because of the school location brigades from Tinopai, Paparoa and Ruawai responded. Fortunately, it was dealt to with a fire extinguisher with no real damage done.” Allan has also run up 28 years with the North Kaipara Coastguard and is currently a qualified master of the Tinopai rescue craft. “But after all these years I reckon

it is really a good time for a holiday so we are off to take a look around the South Island. Then it’s back to the sea patrol I guess.” The brigade was established in 1996 and is active in fire and medical incidents in Tinopai and the surrounding area. At the awards, rural deputy controller Robbie Kersey received three 2-Year UFBA Silver Bars taking total service to 19 years and other awards went to Scott Geange, representing three years of service; Paula
Browne, nine years of service; Wayne Browne, nine years; and Bob Goodin, 13 years service. The Tinopai brigade responds to a variety of emergencies that can include wildfires, civil defence and natural disasters and is the place to check fire safety and burning advice as well as fire season status and permits. Last week’s community meeting about the Kaihu Valley Rail Trail (KVT) at the Mamaranui Bowling Club answered some questions but uncovered others.
A major redevelopment of The Kauri Museum is underway on a time frame extending into next year, with work ranging from a new entranceway to a rebuilding of the iconic Gumdiggers restaurant featured on an extensive list.
A large group turned out to hear the state of progress with the trail. Dargaville’s floral art group is enjoying a new home after a move to the Lighthouse Church hall in Normanby Street.
Recent testing in Paparoa has revealed some properties have failing systems leaking wastewater into the Paparoa Stream. p Floral artists enjoy the creative exercise of working with the season’s foliage and blooms
A visit on a rainy Wednesday revealed an inspired group learning new techniques with flowers and foliage to create artworks beyond the basics of arranging blooms in a vase. Hot tea and home baking round out a convivial experience, says floral artist Margaret Pinny. “We get so many people looking at what we make here and thinking that they couldn’t do that; it’s too complex. However, they might be more creative than they think. The group is also very supportive, and we’re all learning new things.” Evidence of this is on display, with several artworks finding inspiration in the winter landscape. Two artists are experimenting with weaving ribbons and gold thread into carefully cut leaves,
bringing colour to their creations. Another artwork uses fallen leaves like reptile scales to create a naturally textured surface, while yet another uses geranium leaves to create a starburst pattern. “We all share materials,” says Margaret, “Depending on what you have in your garden, you can swap and trade and come up with an idea based on what’s available.” The invitation from the club is to come along on the third Wednesday of each month, try something new, embrace the creative challenge and make new friends. Those who wish to get involved can talk to Margaret on 09 439 4960 or to fellow floral artist Dawn Donald on 09 439 5413. ¢

Building restrictions must go Speed limit cuts supported u by Andy Bryenton
Ruawai Promotions and Development Group says that climate change based restrictions on land use may doom local growth, in a self-fulfilling prophecy of ‘retreat from the sea’. Spokesperson Bruce Crompton, a business owner and engineer in the town, says these restrictions include the requirement for all new builds to be raised up to three metres in height, alongside a moratorium on subdividing and a knockon effect, which affects insurance and potentially bank lending. The restrictions cover the entire Ruawai plain, within the area protected since the late-19th century by stopbanks. “What’s going to happen with these restrictions is a lack of growth, leading to future authorities being able to justify a total retreat from the sea; a self-fulfilling prophecy,” said Mr Crompton. He and fellow Ruawai development advocates are already aware of three builds abandoned due to the restrictions and evidence that banks are unwilling to issue mortgages on properties in the floodplain area due to forecasts of global warming driven inundation. ‘The RPDG holds the view that the existing flood protection infrastructure should be the primary defence for Ruawai homeowners and businesses and that the current regulations are simply shifting the responsibility for flood protection on to individual residents,’ the group said in a notice calling for a public meeting on the issue.
p Members of the Ruawai Promotions and Development Group say that onerous building restrictions are hurting their town
At that meeting last week, Ruawai residents met with the council to address some of the issues involved with the government’s coastal mapping and plans to combat climate change. The issue of building restrictions, however, remain unaddressed, said Mr Crompton and members of the Ruawai Promotions and Development Group. Until it is, they contend, the town may be locked out of the prosperity promised by a rising Kaipara population. ¢

The Kaipara District Council’s special Mangawhai and Kaiwaka Speed Limit Review Panel met last week to review recommendations on sweeping speed limit reductions across the eastern zone of the Kaipara. A wide-reaching plan of reductions, some by 60km/h, was prepared after public feedback was received and collated into a document by the Northland Transport Alliance. The panel moved to recommend adopting most of these changes verbatim, except two amendments; that Settlement Road and King Road should have a new speed limit of 60km/h, lower than the recommended figure. Nearly every unsealed road will have its speed limit reduced, many from 100km/h presently to new limits as low as 40km/h in extreme cases where feedback was received indicating a high crash danger. Many residential roads in Mangawhai will have their speed limits cut back to 30km/h from the current 50km/h. Other key roads facing major changes include Baldrock Road, dropped to 80km/h, Black Swamp Road, down to 60km/h, Cames Road, reduced to 40km/h, Jack Boyd Drive
down to 40km/h and large swathes of the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai main road reduced to 80km/h. The entirety of Molesworth Drive will now be governed to 50km/h, except through the village. Kaiwaka’s Oneriri Road will drop to 80km/h on the paved and 60km/h on the unsealed section. The new layout also creates many new speed zones where the permitted speed changes multiple times; Tara Road is one example. With the changes proposed now recommended, locals await the advent of new signage, and the threat of stiff penalties and demerits for misapprehending the new, slower pace now enforced. Once the recommendations report is adopted, staff will commence the procurement and implementation phase of the changes, including detailed design. Once the procurement phase has been completed, staff will then undertake the required steps to make the recommended changes legal.

New face at Rotary’s helm
Wearable arts receives funding boost

Dargaville’s Rotarians have a new president, as Ash Nayyar steps up to fill the position held by Peter Garelja for the past two terms.
Dargaville’s Wearable Arts has received a funding boost from a governmental programme designed to help promote community events in a post-Covid world.
The club, which recently celebrated its 100th year in New Zealand, is active in community works. Past president Viv Trounson says that Mr Garelja’s back-to-back service in the top role reflected a desire to see his fresh ideas implemented without the need to rush them through. Now Mr Nayyar has assumed the mantle. He plans to carry on the positivity his immediate predecessors have fostered, including outreach through twin committees on youth and community service. “Rotary is about fun and fellowship,” says Ash. “If you’re not having fun, then you’re not truly living. After deliberation and assessment spanning more than a year, the Department of Conservation has opted to close the track that connects Taharoa Domain to the Ripiro Coast.
White Rock Gallery moved to a new location this week, taking up residence in the main street of Ruawai.
Holidaymakers, hikers and anglers seeking a path between the popular campgrounds at Kai iwi Lakes and the Ripiro Coast will have to find an alternative route to the shore, with the nearest being Omamari. Warnings that track use was marginal and the upkeep was prohibitive was published in the Lifestyler last year. Following successful tenures in Paparoa and next door to Matakohe’s Kauri Museum, the popular collective of 21 local artists has found a new home. Matariki in Dargaville u by Andy Bryenton
As the sun set the colours of neon, flames and bright lights came out in Dargaville last Saturday. Crowds gathered at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club and Riverside Gardens to celebrate the season of Matariki, with art, fire performances, dance, song and togetherness. From giant bubbles and hand-painted Matariki themed stones to share, through to a sausage sizzle and children dressed in illuminated costumes, the first inaugural Dargaville festival for the traditional Māori new year was a display of colour and creativity. ¢

A potential problem solver u by Andy Bryenton
Earlier this year, it was revealed by farming group Beef + Lamb New Zealand that most livestock farms are already carbon neutral; it’s just that to count as carbon offsetting vegetation, plants have to be either native forest or pine trees. Orchards, gardens, shelterbelts and other messy, organic stuff that we have a lot of around the place don’t count as plants, so the figures still look dire. It’s this kind of statistical weaselism that makes a farce of honest efforts to help the environment. Now there’s a similar hole in the government’s efforts to switch over to electrical power for vehicles. After reviewing the rules, the think-tank here at your local paper discovered a vehicle that is all-electric, has a long range, would slash parking pressure and congestion, is easy to operate, has a petrol counterpart that would be replaced, and would use less electricity than any other vehicle on the endorsed EV list. Here’s the best part; with the promised full EV rebate, it would be free. If they were serious about getting people into less polluting transport, especially in cities, this would be big news. Without the $40,000 barrier to EV ownership and free parking to boot, people would give this option some serious consideration. It’s just that you’re not allowed one because it’s a motorcycle. Perhaps the central government bean counters are concerned about ACC levies. Never mind that these are
p An EV that delivers on range and costs about the same as the promised subsidy — however, you’re not allowed one
paid, exorbitantly, by riders themselves. However, it seems more like a strike against the fact that motorbikes could be seen as that PC swear word, spelt F. U. N. The Evoke Classic certainly looks fun. With 200 kilometres range for each charge, a bike’s tiny road space footprint and the ability to use standard car-sized
charging points, it would entice both existing riders and car commuters to get a helmet on. Many modern cities have huge motorcycle commuter fleets and special lanes for them, as they demonstrably free up traffic flow and parking infrastructure. Evoke’s Classic and Street models,

A definite game changer u by Andy Bryenton
While everything from opinion articles to actual protests has faced the government’s EV and PHEV rebate scheme, the discounts are real, and savvy buyers are looking for ways to leverage this windfall into a practical new vehicle. While pure electric power may not be the perfect solution for rural Kaipara folks, Ford has been working hard on some options that will work and look very enticing even before one factors in the governmental rebate. We’re not talking about the F-150 Lightning, the all-electric ute of (we assume) the prime minister’s dreams. That’s unlikely to be seen on Kiwi shores any time soon. No, Ford has taken the route of maximum range and practicality with two plug-in hybrid electric machines. The first to arrive, available from next week, is the plug-in hybrid version of the popular Ford Transit Custom van. A van that feels like a car on the road and

is appointed like one in the cabin, the Transit Custom continues a legacy of hardworking vans begun in the swinging 60s. Now it comes equipped with an advanced hybrid electric powertrain. Cruise on purely electric power in urban settings and rely on petrol-saving EcoBoost combustion to deliver massive range extension on the open road. You can plug into a charger on the fly or wait to top up the batteries at home, and like every Transit Custom, the PHEV version comes with immense quantities of space in the back. Couriers, tradespeople and business owners will be keen to invest, with a government subsidy sweetening the deal and the promise of dramatically lower fuel bills in a package that removes all the issues with being an early EV adopter out of the big city. Speaking of which, Ford’s second PHEV option is a fresh take on a family car that’s spanned town and country; the new Escape. Coming in September, interest is already hot for the plug-in hybrid version.

Heritage birthday roll call

u by Andy Bryenton
This week, 20 years ago, a small advertisement appeared in local newspapers, calling for members to form a Dargaville vintage machinery club. Now the leadership of that group, which has grown and prospered during the years to become the Dargaville Heritage Machinery Club, is seeking contributors who helped build up the organisation to invite them to a gala luncheon on August 28. The first meeting of the six founding figures of the club was held on August 2, 2001. It comprised David Dreadon, Bruce Galloway, Edward Yakich, Basil Cole, Peter Fisher and Eric Burgess. All shared a passion for antique and classic machines. David, for example, was a proponent of veteran bulldozers, while Bruce came from a farming background that had seen him fly light aircraft extensively. “They were a small group, but it soon grew. There was a lot of community involvement,” says present-day DHMC administrator Ann Lupton. She is trawling the records for sponsors, donors, helpers and supporters. “For example, when we built the current buildings, we had volunteers up on the roof attaching iron, using one of our
