“I’m really excited to play so well in the world champs,” said Robby. Coach Terry Young says it is a great achievement with more than 90 competitors from around the world in the event. He has coached Robby since he was three-years-old and says the long term commitment is to put him on the PGA tour. “He has finished fourth in the U.S Kids Golf and this was backed up with second in the Australian Kids Championships. He now has the IMG world championships under his belt which is where Tiger Woods burst into prominence from. “The other competitors compete in these tournaments often and are the sons of professionals and tour players. They live in gated communities on the side of golf courses and play every day and night after school. They work with top coaches and a little kid from the Mangawhai Heads club has beaten all the Americans.” Terry says he practises and works hard. “Success doesn’t just come about by some fluke event. I believe you have to play with the best early. Don’t wait until you are older, don’t go from a small pond to a big pond.” It is a big commitment for his parents Troy and Heather. Robby is not sponsored yet, but Terry said he will look into that. “I see Robby as one of the best young golfers in the world and as a dad it’s

 Robby and his dad Troy, with his golf trophy

important to get him playing against the best,” said Troy. “Later in life there is enough competition in New Zealand but up until the age of 12 there isn’t much for young gliders. Naturally all the credit

goes to Terry who has put in countless hours and Heather for making sure the school work is done and that at least one member of the family isn’t talking golf 24/7.” 

The trust is a registered charity and independent statutory authority that works with landowners to protect special features on private land, operating as a perpetual trustee to ensure the agreement is respected forever. Attendees were advised about the state of kauri dieback in Northland and encouraged to keep an eye out for potential infections on their land. Mr Weavers encouraged landowners to report any suspected infections for testing saying, “Kaipara is not a write off. Sick trees may not all be PTA infected.” Pete Graham shared kiwi care and habitat protection tips for those landowners with the birds on their land. “We haven’t been very successful in selling our story. It is well known

in rural sectors. It’s not well known in urban sectors. We hope to raise our profile and generate a lot more interest,” said trust chairman James Guild. The day concluded with a walk to the pa site on the top of Paparoa Hill to showcase the Lions work and demonstrate how community organisations and individuals can work together to protect historic sites and land with special features. This land was covenanted by two families, Tom and Kathy Pow and Clyde and Glenys Roach in 1989. Since then Paparoa Lions members have worked to maintain and increase wildlife found in the area and protect the endangered species. 

Dr Danne King created the range more than 40-years-ago and Esthetica owner Trisha House has worked with the system since 1999. “I am really pleased, it was neck and neck for overall Clinic of the Year. My therapists Mieke Lugtigheid and Kimberly Fletcher have worked with the system for just over a year and have embraced all the knowledge they can from their training sessions. “The more we work with the system, the more we realise how great it is. This has given us confidence that we can treat a wide variety of skin problems.

“There is not one skin issue we cannot deal with. We can treat severe acne, rosacea, scarring and more. We treat each case holistically and are here to solve skin issues not just put a band aid over them.” They attending a conference in the USA in September after winning a place in the top five clinics and top five therapists in Australia and New Zealand. “We have a new senior therapist and manager, Felicity McDonald next month so she will be running the clinic while we are away,” said Trisha. 

Chair of Commissioners

Council will hold its monthly meeting in Mangawhai this week, at the Mangawhai Club, 10 am,Tuesday 28 July. The Mangawhai Community Waste Water Scheme Advisory Panel will present its report to the Council at the beginning of this meeting. Northland Councils Working Together The Government recently sought expressions of interests from Councils throughout New Zealand for extending broadband and removing mobile black spots in their areas. A pot of money has been put aside by Central Government to extend and enhance such coverage. Kaipara, Far North, and Whangarei District Councils, along with the Northern Regional Council submitted a joint application. The application is on the Council’s website, www.kaipara.govt.nz. Extending and enhancing broadband and mobile coverage is critical for business development, for emergency services, and for our young people seeking to do school projects from their homes. Broadband access and reliability is becoming as important as the roading network in today’s world. Without it, economic development is hindered. Whether one is running a bed and breakfast accommodation business, a dairy farm, or manufacturing furniture for export, connectivity through the web is essential. The joint Council submission seeks for Kaipara fibre development to support UltraFast Broadband for Dargaville, Maungaturoto Kaiwaka and Mangawhai. It seeks much greater Rural Broadband coverage. It seeks mobile black spot removal from the State Highway network, including the Twin Coast Discovery Route. Councils throughout the country will be competing for the funding. There will not be enough funding to go around. One cannot help but observe that for rural New Zealand to lift its contribution to the national economy further, connectivity to the internet should now be a service that is a given. Dargaville Municipal Chambers Council has been experiencing leaks in this

historic building over the past few years. Damage to the inside ceiling has occurred. We have also received advice around the structure’s earthquake tolerance. Dargaville residents will soon see work begin on replacing its ceramic tile roof with lighter iron tiles, which will both fix the leaks and at the same time provide some strengthening for the building. The building is not occupied. When the roof is fixed and interior damage repaired, the building will become available for tenanting or use by community groups. Tinopai volunteer services to centralise their operations Sometimes things take time! Soon after Commissioners were appointed to Kaipara, I was asked to visit Tinopai to discuss the possibility of Council releasing some land for the voluntary services based at Tinopai to build a shed to house them. After extensive community consultation, a site has now been agreed. Well done to those many people in Tinopai who assisted to move the proposal forward. Court updates Council is still tied up in Court proceedings related to matters of history – with proceedings now before three Courts, all involving a group of Mangawhai property owners. In the District Court the Council took proceedings this month against those remaining property owners who are “rates strikers” as they call it, refusing to pay their historic rates. The case was against Mr Bruce and Mrs Heather Rogan and twenty five others. The Judge reserved his decision. In the High Court, Mr Bruce and Mrs Heather Rogan filed papers this month seeking a Judicial Review of the way their rates have been set. In the Court of Appeal towards the end of August, the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association (an organization chaired by Mr Bruce Rogan) is appealing the 2014 decisions of the High Court by Justice Heath (Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association versus the Kaipara District Council).

In other areas: • The application process for the living alone payment has been simplified. It is now part of NZ Superannuation and can be done over the phone. • The SuperGold card programme has grown and a current campaign to recruit businesses to offer discounts which will provide more value for people is underway. • Breast Screening: The desired outcome is that the government will reconsider a decision not to provide free screening for women over 69 years old. In the meantime the government is keeping an eye on the research but they are more interested in closing the take-up gap between Maori and non-Maori. • Generic Medicines. Grey Power would like to see that another brand of subsidised medicine be available to patients who suffer adverse reactions to Pharmac’s preferred product. This is being pursued by the Grey Power Advocacy team. • Grey Power’s preferred Electricity Supplier, Pulse Energy, is growing by

the day and now has over 10,000 customers. There are many benefits for all consumers. Kaipara Grey Power meets every 3rd Friday in the Methodist Church Complex, Awakino Road. Everybody is welcome. Contact June Klenner 09 439 1736. 

A new venture

Rates issue back to court

The Anglican Church will be sharing a minister between Mangawhai and Wellsford in a move that will see Reverend Wayne Thornton take up the role of ‘priest in charge’ for both districts.

 by Paul Campbell

He will be dividing his time between the two. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays he will be in Mangawhai and Thursdays and Fridays he will be in Wellsford, taking ser vices on alternate Sundays. He says he is “looking forward to this new challenge, which is quite different from being a Vicar. “This is an exciting new venture for the parent body, the Auckland Anglican Diocese, as well as the congregations here.” Reverend Thornton and his wife Kim have moved from Motueka where he was Vicar of the Motueka  Reverend Wayne Thornton will be ‘priest in charge’ for both Anglican Parish, saying that Wellsford and Mangawhai he and his wife both feel at home in this part of the country. Mangawhai ratepayers are going back to the courtrooms in their quest to probe the legality of rates in the wake of the town’s wastewater cost blowout. Now they question rates as set by the Northland Regional Council.

Led by the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association they are seeking a second judicial review, after a rates recovery case earlier against association chairman, Bruce Rogan and his wife Heather. Then, the NRC joined the action as co-plaintiff to recover its own rates arrears. Mangawhai ratepayers owe about $1 million in rates, after a rates strike to protest Kaipara District Council demands which were incorrectly levied, in the wake of the Ecocare Wastewater Scheme which ballooned to $80 million.

The rates demands were then validated by retrospective government legislation. A High Court decision enforced the rates payment but the case has been appealed and will be heard next month. Meanwhile the MRRA has filed judicial review proceedings at the Whangarei High Court against both the regional and district councils, seeking the quashing of their rates for the past six years on a number of technical grounds. The NRC has no comment on the latest proceedings as the matter is before the court. 

The Kauri Museum officially launched its ‘Wonders of Wool’ exhibition on July 23 which runs until September 4.

Artwork from the Kaipara and beyond will soon be on display at The Kauri Museum volunteers hall in Matakohe, from August 7 with the Gilmore Brown 2015 Kaipara Art Awards ceremony kicking off the exhibition at 6pm.

 Lyn King and Herta Jakle showcase the versatility of wool at The Kauri Museum ‘Wonders of Wool’ exhibit

The exhibition guides visitors through the museum and draws attention to the various uses of wool in New Zealand life, from the iconic black woolen singlet, to the more contemporary woolen crafts. Museum CEO Lisa Tolich says the exhibition is to promote the versatility and durability of wool. “Wool as a textile is very useful. The launch is a thank you to our dedicated team of textiles volunteers who have worked very hard putting this together.” As a natural fibre, wool is durable and

has flame resistant properties making it a multi functional product. ‘Wonders of Wool’ ranges from the everyday uses in pioneering life to the more unusual uses, such as for formal occasions and crafts. The exhibit includes a woolen wall hanging called ‘Spirit of the Kaipara’ by Pat George. Markers are placed around the museum which match with a description of the exhibit, spinning the story of wool in New Zealand throughout history. 

The evening is a collaborative effort by Dargaville Arts Association and Mangawhai Artists Inc and aims to give members of the arts community and potential buyers a chance to view the variety of works and hear the judges feedback on the winning pieces. Minister meets families

Film talent takes off

 by Ayla Miller

 by Ayla Miller

Families involved with organisation Nga Ripo, got the chance to meet with Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell, exhibiting the community work being done in the Kaipara.

Judges had a hard time choosing winners at the Northland Short Film Competition due to the high calibre of entries showcased in Dargaville last weekend.

 A scene from ‘I haven’t named it yet’ — one of the winning entries in the 2015 Northland Short Film Competition

 Families involved with Nga Ripo met with Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell

“This was about showcasing the Kaipara and it was a privilege for Minister Flavell to hear directly from whanau how his whanau ora policy has been positively implemented,” said Nga Ripo Kaiwhakatere Tuakana — lead navigator — Jenny Huriwai. “This is a memory that they will hold forever, having the minister hear their story.” Nga Ripo is a collective organisation made up of six providers offering support, advocacy and motivation to empower families and help them to

achieve their goals. “Our role is to support whanau to identify goals and actions that will assist them in achieving or coming closer to their aspirations,” Jenny said. They had a number of messages for the minister, one being ‘don’t forget the Kaipara.’ Families got the chance to speak directly to the minister about how Nga Ripo helped them achieve their goals in a number of different areas, allowing him to see how these organisations work on a practical level. 

Prizes were awarded by Northland MP Winston Peters at ANZAC theatre. “We were very pleased with the support we had from the schools here and in Whangarei and with the overall standard,” said Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust secretary Jacoba Puharich. In the open section, ‘I haven’t named it yet’ by The Laughing Jamaicans and ‘Torment’ by Five the Year After, came first equal, winning $500 each. The Laughing Jamaicans crew member Dylan Hansen helped to film, direct and edit the production and said the concept evolved while the group of past Dargaville High School students were discussing ideas at a friends place. “This years film is a big step up in regards to quality. I’d like to think that

the sound has improved from previous productions. The team is really happy with what we’ve put together.” The majority of the film was shot over one weekend at a crew members parents house. The films were judged on creativity, originality, entertainment value and technical ability. “There is one tracking scene which was filmed with a tripod on a skateboard which rolled on plywood,” said Dylan. Four groups shared first place in the school age section with ‘The Poppy Story’ by Trish Puharich winning the Gallipoli section. The theatre will be screening all the entries again on Sunday, August 2 at 2pm. 

Building a true sense of community  by Andy Bryenton

What makes a town? Bricks and mortar, concrete and asphalt? Or people living and working together, intent on fostering a great place to live? Most of us would agree with the latter — that a town worth living in is one which balances shops and services with a generous, supportive sense of community. After all, a town could survive without sports teams, churches, clubs, music and art societies, charitable groups — but would you want to live there? The ‘extra curricular’ things which make a community have inestimable value. They give locals the chance to expand their horizons, with everything from theatre to martial arts. They teach teamwork and skills to our kids through sports. They often support the most vulnerable in our midst, or even save lives on a daily basis like our surf lifesavers, firefighters and ambulance crews. All these and more are made possible by a whole lot of generosity from the local business community — the driving force behind prizes for raffles, sports uniform sponsorship, donations and more. Think of all the places around town who are happy to let their staff down tools at the sound of the fire siren, or all those businesses who donate to hamper draws, scholarships and

THE TEAM AT GRANT’S GAS & PLUMBING ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT THE NORTHERN WAIROA NETBALL ASSOCIATION

renovation drives. Many will repair club premises for much less than the market rate when it’s needed, too. A good example is Kaipara Kumara in central Ruawai. This core business in the small riverside town has been a very supportive and active member of the local community since 1970. With the enormous community support it receives in helping to maintain a business presence in Ruawai, Kaipara Kumara firmly believes that it is only right to give back — recently stepping up to help see a rescue helipad built on the local school grounds. Manager

Anthony Blundell says that such support is a common trait amongst most of the businesses in Ruawai, and it’s the same across the Kaipara! Without our support, however, local businesses just won’t be able to provide the massive helping hand they extend to our non-profit groups. Think of this fact when considering where to spend your dollars this winter and spring, and please keep it local where you can. It’s not just money which supports your friends and neighbours at work - it also flows through to some worthy causes right here in our region. 

Second chance brands  by Ayla Miller

Katie Le Noel from Dargaville has been making her handmade worcester sauce for more than 30 years. Wild West Worcester featured in this months cuisine magazine and is debuting at the Auckland food show this week. The recipe was handed to her with a stack of old recipe books from her mother in law when she was first married. “I have adapted the recipe many times and it started with me making it for my friends and family, then their friends wanted it and it grew,” said Katie. Those who received it insisted she should make it commercially and says one day in a moment of boredom she decided to do it. “Then it was too late to  Katie Le Noel with her Wild West Worcester products which she turn back as I had started has displayed at the Food Show in Auckland this week the process and suddenly they rave about it and often buy a bottle I had to formulate an actual recipe. That was really hard as I to take with them. Once you try it, you’ll never stuck to a recipe and now I have never go back to any other brand. “The onion relish and beetroot to,” she said. With a commercial kitchen license, relish is just as good. All are great her product range includes the original accompaniments for beef, lamb spicy sweet black sauce, hot chilli and venison.” The products are available in sauce, ghost pepper hot sauce — which is for the brave, a pickled onion relish Dargaville at Jon Matich Surf Shop, Elf Organics and Wellness Centre and Mike and a beetroot relish. “I was using onions for flavour and Nola Sports. Samples of the spicy sweet black didn’t want to waste them, so I created the relish which is very popular,” sauce are available in store while stocks last. she said. To find out more go to www. “You can’t have onion without beetroot to accompany it. My beetroot relish is wildwestworcester.co.nz.  fresh, colourful and full of flavour.” Katie says she is excited to be WILD WEST WORCESTER displaying her products at the food show this week, and Silver Fern Farms Dargaville plant manager Lance Warmington says the product is Straight from the very good. WILD WEST “I brought a bottle of Wild West Only the very best. Worcester nearly two years ago and loved it. Now my whole family love it’s unique flavour,” said Lance. “When we have friends over, and visitors to my Silver Fern Farms Plant,

Polwarth Design in Dargaville are giving designer clothes a second chance, with their new second hand designer range to be officially launched on Sunday, August 2. Karen Matich and Cheryl Polwarth have been trialling the second hand designer range over the past few weeks and say it will offer Dargaville shoppers something different. “A lot of people have beautiful clothing they don’t necessarily want to give away. It is a hassle putting it on trademe so we take the ‘too hard’ out of it,” said Karen. “We get people blending an outfit from new and second hand clothing. It is good when people need something for a one off event. They can try things on and benefit from our expertise.” Those wanting to sell, can drop their designer clothing into Polwarth Dargaville on 78 Victoria Street. Staff choose what they think will sell and give a percentage back to the seller. Clothes are kept for two months and if they don’t sell during this time, there is the option of donating it to a charity or taking it home. “Anyone is welcome to come along and check out our new range. We are

Progress for activity zone  by Ayla Miller

The Mangawhai Activity Zone will have a number of new features over the coming months. Major extensions to the skate parks street plaza will take place in mid September including a number of obstacles for users to test out their skills. “This will be really popular with young park users,” says chairman and funding organiser Colin Gallagher. As a result of the Casino Royale Charity Gala fundraising event, Mangawhai Activity Zone raised $46,000 after all funds were accounted for, which will go towards the three family barbeque areas along with seats near the children’s playground. Work will begin on public toilets in the car park in the next few weeks under the Kaipara District Council. Planning for a cricket pitch with nets are in the works for the lower field and MAZ are currently in discussions about these developments. “We are looking at ways at better utilising that space,” said Mr Gallagher. MAZ has recently launched a new initiative to get supporters involved with the project called SMAZ —

Time to ask the hard questions Fonterra dairy suppliers will soon know whether the payout forecast will again be revised in August, with the declining value of its dairy products. The dairy giant’s competitor Open Country announcing its revised forecast milk price downwards into the range of $3.65–$3.95 from $4.70–$4.90 a kilo will spook the banks and their farmer clients, especially if the Fonterra current cash advance paid to farmers drops to the level of the Open Country announcement of $3.00 a kilo of milk solids for August and October. With November to January forecast at an initial $2.75, the average New Zealand dairy farmer will face a financial operating loss from dairy returns in excess of $200,000. NZX dairy futures price predictions that milk powder will decline even further to US$1,570 a tonne, is well short of the US$3,500 a tonne required for Fonterra to meet its current $5.25 per kilo milk solids forecast. Dairy farmers now face the prospect of receiving the lowest payout since the 2002–2003 season’s $3.63 return. Fonterra’s seemingly belated announcement in recent weeks that it has now engaged consultants to look

at its core business, and that there will be 500 staff redundancies, will be viewed by many as an action taken too late and insignificant with the company employing in excess of 18,000 people. Fonterra dairy farmers need to stop being friendly, co-operative members and start becoming hard-nosed, demanding shareholders, speaking out and asking the hard questions. Does the Global Dairy Trade auction system set up by Fonterra really maximise the price for our dairy products? No doubt there will be screams of affirmative from the industry but is it simply a cost effective way of easy selling? Marketing is about producing a product the customer wants and optimising the price you receive. Apple are one of the best marketers of our time. They produce a great functioning but well designed product that customers want and they can command a significant premium against their competitors. I doubt if Apple would contemplate ever auctioning off their

products to determine the market price. In fact, they manage their own price in the market and aggressively protect its value. If we are to really achieve an added value for our supposedly clean green safe dairy products how can we capture a premium when we dump thousands of tonnes, along with everybody else’s, on the auction floor for the customers to set the price. How do we develop strong relationships with our customers and build customer loyalty when we treat them all the same in the auction room? How do we ultimately build added value if we continue to use the crude auction process? This country for decades has talked about added value and done the actual opposite. The consultancy company, McKinsey, that originally promoted the mega merger resulting in Fonterra, has now been appointed to review Fonterra’s

performance. Well Fonterra has not got even close to delivering what was originally proposed and the company’s soft underbelly has certainly been exposed with the slump in prices. The fact that they have to employ consultants to decide where they are going wrong says bucket loads about the effectiveness of both the management and the board. It’s unlikely any of the top brass will fall on their sword leaving the pain and hurt of their lack of skill to the lower echelons of Fonterra and their farmer suppliers. The board’s chairman and other directors are up for re-election at the forthcoming annual general meeting. History has shown that when company shareholders lose confidence and morale is low, it normally results in the non re-election of the chairman and directors.

The cream of the crop by Andy Bryenton

Versatility is the key to success for tractors in the hotly contested 100–150 horsepower segment, with the ability to cover a wide range of tasks on the farm proving popular, as savvy farmers invest in a ‘swiss army knife’ approach to their machinery. Kubota have taken this ethos a step further than most with their latest M-series tractors, delivering a range of machines spanning from 100 to 135 horsepower which are as adept at feeding out to the herd as they are undertaking cropping operations. Rather than being focused on one particular form of primary production, the MGX 135 and its little brothers down the HP range are designed, like the old dependable tractors of yesteryear, to simply go where they are needed. Aside from the bulletproof nature of Kubota’s low-emission diesel mill under the hood, this has been achieved largely through clever design. Class-leading underbody clearance and the ability to fit row-crop friendly narrow wheels makes the MGX fit right in on a cropping farm, while the option to fit a powerful hydraulic bucket up front is welcome in any operation.

Add to this a smart PTO memory system which remembers the revolutions per minute needed for the optimum use of a range of trailed or mounted implements, and this mediumsized tractor begins to truly punch above its weight. A versatile tractor is often called on to work in muddy and difficult conditions, both the front and rear diffs of the MGX can be locked using an electro-hydraulic system, providing the kind of traction which off-road trucks can only envy. The big orange machines from Kubota have had a great showing at this year’s Fieldays, and offerings like the MGX series can only do more to ensconce the brand’s name in the top echelons of agricultural machinery. As farmers look to get the most machine for their money, you can expect that many more will be put through their paces for a test drive this season.
