Four saved from boat blaze  by Paul Campbell

Four men were rescued unharmed from the waters of the Kaipara Harbour last Sunday, as their launch burnt almost to the waterline, despite the desperate fire fighting efforts of rescuers.  The Dargaville Library was taken over by children eager to go on a pirate adventure recently. The activity was part of the library’s Winter Warmer programme, and the week previously, a Hairy Maclary look alike showed up to celebrate the book’s 30th birthday. Around 40 children participated during the course of the morning and as well as being read pirate adventure stories, they made pirate hats, eye patches and swords. Some children took the opportunity to show the librarian their book reports, a rewards programme set up by the library. Between July 1 and August 9, if children read and report on 10 books they get invited to a finale at the Town Hall, August 14, 3.30pm.

Coming into spring, she has displayed a pink and pastel coloured entry, Marie Antoinette, a 2010 category award winner. She has made six wearable arts garments and will display each in time. She began the displays two months ago and has received numerous comments from people asking when the next garment will be showcased. “Instead of keeping them in a cardboard box, i wanted to display them to draw people in.” All shop proceeds are put back to the community and help fund the palliative care service, Hospice Kaipara Inc.

A new aviation fuel tank will be ready to go in about a fortnight at Dargaville Airfield out on Hoanga Road.

 With one handred and thirty members calling the Dargaville Aero club their ‘home base’, the addition of amenities like this is all the more important. Local tradies got the job done right!

Installed by Shell, the Z Energy Avgas tank weighing 80 tons filled and holding 55,000 litres of avgas for the aeroplanes operating from the aerodrome, it replaces the old tank that held just 15,000 litres. Airfield manager Murray Foster says, “It has been good for Dargaville with all the outwork being done by locals. It has meant a lot of concrete, welding, earthworks and electrical work. There are actually two tanks, one inside the other and sitting on fifteen piles going thirty feet down and then covered with concrete and steel reinforcing. A full tanker and trailer will be needed to fill the tank and they will also stand on the concrete plane refuelling apron to drain off any spillage. The tanker drives up from Tauranga.” “At the height of the season it will last about a month before it needs topping up. We have top-dressing planes, helicopters, visiting planes and our own club members all using it.”

Dargaville Aero Club currently has one hundred and thirty members, including school students and twenty pupils training for their recreational licence. There is now an all weather one kilometre long runway, recently upgraded with 600 tonnes of limestone. Murray points out, “If we had the money to widen it to suit bigger planes we would have a major tourist facility.” As it is the Club entertains anywhere up to fifty visitors on a Saturday for lunch from their officially registered kitchen. Last weekend twenty-six planes turned up at the busy airfield. “They come from all over,” says Murray. “From perhaps Thames, Waihi or Hamilton and they often spend the afternoon in town having a look around. We charge no landing fee and there is a free coffee for every visitor when they arrive.” Shell Z plan to test the tank and landscape the area before it goes into service. It will be the largest tank above ground in the north. ¢

On August 2, mothers in Dargaville, Kaiwaka, and Mangawhai will be part of a worldwide attempt to break the record for the most women simultaneously breastfeeding.

Women’s Health Action has coordinated the Big Latch On events throughout New Zealand as part of World Breastfeeding Week since 2005 with funding from the Ministry of Health. New Zealand is one of 22 participating countries. Dargaville event organiser, Heather Carter, says breastfeeding has major health benefits including decreasing the risk of asthma and diabetes among other illnesses. She encourages all breastfeeding mothers to participate. Kaiwaka event organiser, Helen Mahoney, recently moved to Maungaturoto from Waiheke Island

where she coordinated events for the past seven years and says she’s looking forward to hosting one in a new area. This year the World Breastfeeding Week theme is peer support, which recognises that successful breastfeeding requires support from family, friends and the community. Where? Inspiration met with generosity Epilepsy seminar  by Andy Bryenton

The mysteries of epilepsy will be explained for a cross-section of the community in a seminar to be held at Linking Hands in Maungaturoto. Conducted by Epilepsy New Zealand’s north branch field officer, Margaret Dunn, the seminar covers the facts about what epilepsy is, what causes the condition, recognition of seizure types, first aid for seizures, seizure triggers, recording seizures, and the principles of anti-epileptic medication as well as lifestyle issues and other concerns. “These sessions are open to anyone and are helpful for anyone living with epilepsy and their whanau and also for caregivers, community workers, education and health professionals wanting to find out more about epilepsy,” says Ms Dunn. The seminar is set for Linking Hands on Wednesday July 31 from 10am to 12 noon.

Dargaville’s First National Roper and Jones real estate office has been associated with the National Burn Centre for over a year now, donating technology to help those recovering from injuries there stay in contact with friends and family. Now Jill Wilson and the team at Roper and Jones are very pleased to see that their input is making a big difference. Four new iPads are now available for patients to use, through the good work of the First National Charitable Foundation. Jill cites young burns patient Christine Selwyn as an inspiration for the local company to keep supporting the National Burn Centre. Christine was 17 when 44 per cent of her body was severely burnt in a house fire. She was staying in her grandmother’s Northland garage to celebrate a cousin’s 21st birthday when an unattended candle caused the blaze. Christine has endured 27 operations and 17 stays in hospital since the accident in April 2001. On July 4 she completed 20 years of service at the hospital and says it’s important to celebrate the commitment and longevity of all staff members. “There are many staff members who have been here much longer than I have and it’s important to acknowledge them.” The District Health Board recognised 20 continuous years of service, and recently celebrated nurse, Dot Johnson’s commitment with an afternoon tea. Jen says there are also staff members who have temporarily left to have children or travel that also deserve recognition. Jen never intended to stay. After completing her training in Manukau, she moved to Dargaville to work on a relative's farm, a temporary stop off in her nursing career. She was 21 when she began working part time in the surgical ward, and contributes her longevity to the friendships formed and the health care services provided.

The surgical ward closed in 1994, and the whole hospital was under threat of closure. “This hospital is around because of the good will of the community who went to the top level of government to ensure the services remain in Dargaville.” She was promoted to nursing services manager in 2001 and then became operations manager in 2006. One of the biggest changes in health care that she has experienced is the use of technology and telemedicine. “Through video conference links, a patient can have a consultation with a specialist anywhere in the world.” She is passionate about rural health and is chairperson of the NZ Rural Hospital Network. Jen wants to continue to work in rural health and not one to create plans, she’s uncertain what the next 20 years has in store. ¢

Accolades for artists

Chilli a roaring success

Kaipara artists are receiving widespread acclaim as a result of the Muddy Waters exhibition, celebrating three years since the formation of the Dargaville Arts Association, and to promote the association’s permanent gallery.

A visit from top gourmet food critics, unannounced, is something which would send shivers down the spine of most restaurant owners. But the Aratapu Tavern’s Donice and Richard were happy to greet renowned gustatory authority Terry Tyack and his party when they dropped in to sample our own local twist on the Monteith’s Wild Food Challenge. The Aratapu’s kitchen served up a delicious venison chilli appropriately

named ‘the Roar’, accompanied by kumara fritters and bathed in a spicy, piquant sauce which blew the judges away — though not through sheer heat alone! They also gave the Aratapu team 10 out of 10 for getting into the spirit of the challenge, decorating the popular local tavern with chilli shaped lights and adding some good old Kaipara kumara into both their fritters and garlic bread for some local flavour. ¢

The members exhibition is open until August 6, at 108 Victoria Street after being officially opened by Kaipara District council commission chair, John Robertson. “We had about 70 guests at opening night which was a wine and finger food event with entertainment by local group Take 6, in the big open space in Victoria St. Mr Robertson also went home with some artwork from our exhibition,” said association secretary, Pauline Gough. “There were 142 new artworks created specially for this show and we are getting around 100 people a day going through and making great comments about the talent in the area, and the professionalism in our display of works. As well as people from across the Kaipara and wider areas, we have

also had visitors from as far away as Dubai. In fact, some of our art has gone back with them. We have had steady sales from a great variety of work.” Ms Gough said the exhibition has done exactly what the association members wanted. “It’s like a big advertisement to promote the gallery on the corner of Parenga and Kapia Streets as well as the association, and we are selling artworks from both places at the moment. A bonus has been that we have several new members as a result.” The association has a full programme to continue promoting Kaipara artists, with the next event to be the Kaipara Arts Awards at the Matakohe Kauri Museum, working with the Mangawhai Artists group. ¢

Local body elections Nominations for candidates for the Northland Regional Council in the October local authority elections opened on Friday, July 19, with one seat allocated to a Kaipara candidate. Candidates for nine positions on the NRC will have until noon on Friday, August 16 to get their nominations in. Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and on the electoral roll. On October 12 Northlanders will vote for nine regional councillors representing seven, constituencies

— Te Hiku, Hokianga-Kaikohe, Coast North, Coastal Central, Whangarei Urban, Coastal South and Kaipara. Coastal North and Whangarei Urban each have two council seats. Coach, Mike Schimanski, couldn’t be prouder of the D and E grade Maungaturoto women’s squash teams.

When Dr Maurice Matich retired in 2000 he began to write about poignant moments in his life.

Over a decade later, the autobiography, From Beacon Point — My Journey, My Story has been published by Phantom House with a book launch planned at the Lighthouse Function Centre on August 4. The book documents the Matich and Silich families immigration from Croatia right through to reflections of old age and in some ways it’s a tale about ‘the New Zealand dream’. His parents arrived from Croatia in 1906. His father arrived with £16.00 in his pocket and became a gum digger. His parents valued education and through hard work ensured that six of their eight children gained tertiary qualifications. Maurice became a respected doctor and within his career he became Chairman of the Medical Association of New Zealand and was influential in a number of policies including being involved with introducing ACC legislation and advocating for Maori health. Dr Matich was the first New Zealand born Croatian to study medicine. After completing his studies in Otago, he set up a general practice at what is now the family home in Hokianga Road, Dargaville, in 1950. “This house has always been a doctors’ house,” says Maurice, and is protected under the Historical Places Trust. It was built in 1924 by Dr Crump. Maurice’s wife Maureen says, “this

house is blessed. Our son Damian was born here, our daughter Amanda baptised here and our daughter Siobhan married here. Dr Crump died here while consulting with a patient.” In the 1950s, Maurice was one of only three doctors serving the Kaipara area. Most days the line of patients outside his house was often long, so they had to provide seating down the surgery ramp. As well as the general practice, he made house visits often travelling great distances, and he worked at the Te Kopuru Maternity Annexe. He delivered around 5,000 babies and supervised many more births. “In my first year, it was the baby boomer period and I would have delivered around 200 babies.” Life was sometimes chaotic for Maurice and his wife Maureen. They raised seven children, and at times it was hard to juggle both work and family. Maureen sometimes had to tell the telephone exchange operators to hold calls to their doctors surgery so she could bathe a baby. Maureen remains very grateful to all the telephone operators' help, “they were a God-send,” she says. He decided to write his memoirs to share with his family their history, and his granddaughter, Tamzen Dunn says, “he’s quite a guy.” ¢

The issue of foreign ownership and investment in New Zealand property has been debated many times in New Zealand politics. It is good to see that the Labour Party is endorsing Farmers of New Zealand foreign ownership of New Zealand land policy. Foreign ownership is acceptable if a residential qualification is met or the Minister of overseas investment determines that the purchase of land would provide substantial benefit of the nation. Such decisions must be made public. But Labour’s policy of targeting Asians as being the main culprit in stopping first home buyers in New Zealand buying property is a debatable point.

We have all endorsed the free market policy. We seek the removal of trade tariffs in countries that we deal with. We have entered into free trade agreements with China and other countries and Fonterra our biggest agriculture cooperative in New Zealand is making huge investments in China and other Asian countries, to meet the demands of the 3.8 billion people who live in the Asia basin.

Many Asians over the years have acquired retail shops and have operated restaurants and food outlets and to their credit, have made a better job of it than some New Zealanders. Dame Whena Cooper, the Northland Maori matriarch advised Maori, if you want to dilute the influence of the pakeha, marry them. Maybe the same should apply to the Asians. Many successful New Zealand marriages have taken place with Asian spouses. Land is the basis of New Zealand’s wealth. It is a source of the country’s export earnings and will continue to be the principal earner of foreign exchange

for many years. This precious resource must be carefully husbanded to maintain its productive capacity. Changing world market and economic conditions require a flexible approach to planning and land management, particularly when it comes to the urban sprawl. Auckland’s high house prices are much to do with the shortage of land being available for development. More land should be made available for housing development between Auckland and Warkworth. A lot of this land is marginal and suitable for residential development. The government has clearly signalled that it is going to provide the finance necessary to develop the Northern motorway to Wellsford. This will also open up the southern Kaipara district to benefit from the Auckland sprawl. Many southern Kaipara people go to work in Auckland. New Zealand is a multi-cultural country, a land of immigrants, Dalmations, English, Poles, Dutch, South Africans, Pa c i f i c Islanders, Asians and others. Surely we need solutions for all New Zealand residents who must be treated fairly and equitably. Intellectual property rights and land are New Zealand’s two most valuable assets. It is always a great risk that New Zealand’s intellectual property rights can be purchased or lost to overseas interests and removed from the country, but they cannot take the land away from New Zealand. ¢

That wus wen his mate’s arrived an’ they hada reel good night ta ‘wet tha baby’s hed.’ I tole yer befor in fact that I didint no why ya wood wanta wet a babys hed, but anyway, it’s orl happind agen, and wood ya beleeve, even Sharlene and her mum joined in. As ya no, Mum’s wun of me favrite peepile cos she sneeks me great leftovas frum Biss’s dinna. Pork krakling and stuff. But enyway, last week, tha drive wuz filld up wiv cars, an’ tractas, an’ a cupla motabikes too, Boss had lites strung ina woolshed, an’ a cupla kegs fruma pub. Sharlene an’ her frinds all spint tha day bakin’ cakes, ana Boss also kilt a muttin, an’ stuk it ona gas spit thingy wot he got ata Mistry Creek Feel Daze. So it wuz orl on her ona proppity. Then Mum tole me: “we gunna wet tha baby’s hed, Billy.” But like I sed, I wuz rilly puzzild, because we alreedy had nees up fer Sophie. (I havint rilly seen mucha tha new kid, cos it’s bin rainin’ a lot an’ too kold fer her ta be outside. But Sharlene

Anyway, Boss an’ I wuz ata Pub, an’ I herd Chippa tell Albee an’ Plumba that Boss was havin’ a hooley fer tha prinz.’ An’ tha pinny dropped. We wuzzint havin’ another nees up fer Sophie. It wus cos the Inglish peeple gotta new baby as well asa Boss. But ifa Boss gunna hava nees up evry time sum kid gets borned, we neva gunna get any werk done ona farm eh? Well, Mum put me rite. “Its Royil Baby, Billy,” she sed. It’s bit like if you, wots a champeen eye dog, wiv a grate pedigree (that meens my Pappy and Gran Pappy were grate champeen eye dogs too) ya got good blud lines. If yer hada litta of pups, then Boss wud celerbrate too. So I see tha lojic now. Let’s party!

If blood vessels lose their elasticity they can offer greater resistance to circulating blood which requires the heart to pump harder to achieve good circulation. Compare your blood vessels with a garden hose. The green plastic is supple allowing for flexibility while the white webbing provides strength. As the hose ages it becomes less flexible and may crack and leak. This is much like how free radicals damage elastin and collagen proteins causing stiffness and weakness in blood vessels. The loss of elasticity and subsequent stiffening of major blood vessels is often caused by reductions in the function of elastic fibres or the cross-linking of supporting collagen fibres. This loss of elasticity is often a contributor to hypertension. Primary Hypertension is the name for elevated blood pressure where there is no specific cause. Research does suggest that free radicals (oxidative stress) play a role in damaging blood vessels thus causing an increase in blood pressure. A paper published in Hypertension Research (Rodrigo, 2007) compared free radical activity in 30 people with primary hypertension compared with 30 healthy people. The study confirmed that markers of oxidative stress were significantly higher in those with hypertension. Over the years I have observed many people improve their blood pressure using nutritional therapy. With diet we want to target foods high in compounds called polyphenols and vitamin C. I always add antioxidant supplement complexes that are high in grape seed OPC’s, high in vitamin C and other complementary compounds. While results vary a lot, some people, especially those with slightly elevated blood pressure can notice a return to more normal levels of blood pressure. Give me a call if you need more information. History, courage and dedication — one hundred years of service by Paul Campbell

When the town of Dargaville was first founded it was built on timber – the massive kauri forests of the Kaipara provided the raw materials to cultivate a thriving colonial economy. But it was also built largely from timber, and supported by industries prone to flammable accidents. Boats caulked with tar and pitch, ropes and stays woven from hemp, piles of pit-sawn logs… it was only a matter of time before the formation of a dedicated Fire Brigade became a high priority. In the year of 1913, just months before the world was plunged into the Great War, that first band of men was brought together, chartered and equipped to protect the bustling town of Dargaville from fire.

By modern standards their equipment seems primitive – there were no ‘jaws of life’, no high-powered pumps driven by diesel engines, and even the old fashioned uniforms were more akin to police attire than the heatresistant garments of today. But Dargaville’s current group of volunteer firefighters do share one thing with their centenarian counterparts – a dedication to duty which has seen them save many, many lives over the years. This year marks the one hundredth anniversary of the foundation of Dargaville’s Fire Brigade, capping a century of

hard work and heroism. The sacrifices made by ordinary men and women who take time away from work and family to protect the town will be celebrated, and there will be a ‘parade through time’ of fire appliances for all to enjoy, centred around the 27th and 28th of September. Plans are afoot to include firefighting demos alongside the ranks of bright red and chrome engines, which will include everything from a converted Land Rover 4x4 all the way through to a ‘classic’ fire truck, currently being restored by Gillespie’s expert panel and paint team.

Recent fundraising efforts led by our local branch of the BNZ bank have seen participating stores in town dress piggy banks to garner donations for the centenary celebrations, as well as going to continue the good work which the brigade carry out every day. A measure of the goodwill which Dargaville feels for their fire volunteers can be seen in the huge number of creatively dressed little pigs which were entered. Ellis set out to print the region’s very first newspaper, his task was one which required molten lead, india ink, reams of paper and a press which would have been familiar in shape and function to Johannes Gutenberg himself.
