Dementia unit nears reality u by Paul Campbell

The multi-million dollar dementia unit development at Maungaturoto’s Riverview Rest Home is just $300,000 from being fully funded, and a dozen concrete trucks rolled onto the site last week for builders to lay 55 metres of unit flooring.

The 14-bed dementia unit is to cost $3.6 million, and while surveying issues have seen the project delayed in the past, chair of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust, Craig Fergus, says he’s “thrilled to see significant progress now underway. “Yes, in total, the last few weeks has seen around $50,000 pledged to the project. We are closing in on our target every month.” Mr Fergus said $30,000 has come from The Den, the former Scout Hall in Bickerstaffe Road where community fundraiser Albie Paton and his team sell donated goods, furniture and assorted items, some from deceased estates. “The Den very kindly pledged $30,000 of the $50,000, and a further

$10,000 has been pledged by the local Op Shop. Once the total pledges are in, we will need just over $300k to complete the unit. “There were a dozen truckloads of 55 metres of concrete, which started at around 7am on Wednesday, July 24. This is a significant stage as the foundations are now complete. The next stage is the framing and closing the building in, so with a little luck, there will be some major changes in the coming months. “We would like to acknowledge all our wonderful donors to date. A special thanks to Atlas Concrete for their support while developing the foundation stage. There’s a few fundraising events planned for the near future, so watch out for these.”

Mr Fergus added that the need for the dementia unit was huge, and a benefit for the wider Kaipara area. “I saw an interesting fact in a recent article about aged care facilities. By 2050 the number of dementia sufferers would have tripled to 170,000 New Zealand wide. That is scary stuff.” Fundraising committee member, Albie Paton said Kaipara residents rose to the occasion when something needs financing. “We have always come through with the money The Maungaturoto and Paparoa halls, the Kaiwaka sports complex, facilities at Otamatea College, Matakohe and Mangawhai museums as well as many other local projects have benefitted from local support.”

Pahi trees saga continues u by Paul Campbell

Contractors were called in to trim branches from two towering Norfolk Pines, which caused the closure of the Pahi Reserve children’s playground because of the danger posed by falling branches. The work was carried out last week, but the playground was still locked and closed as of Monday this week. The arboreal contractors also trimmed dangerous branches for the third heritage tree at Pahi, the iconic Moreton Bay Fig, which had a major branch slump two months ago. The Kaipara District Council says the Norfolk pines are regarded as “trees of national significance, and it can’t accede to numerous requests for them to be removed.” The council also suggested the playground be moved and said it was investigating options to do so. PET LAMBS

Ray White Jean Johnson Real Estate in Dargaville are pleased to welcome Charmain Ghio to the team! Offering professional and friendly property management solutions to the region’s landlords and property investors We know that School Ag Day will be here sooner than we realise and with that comes lots of pet lambs and goats. At Dargaville Vets we want every animal to be a winner so once again we will be offering free docking and castration of pet lambs and goats along with free lamb vaccination to protect against tetanus around docking time. In addition, this year we will be including a five in one vaccination to provide longer term protection against clostridial diseases and a long acting pain relief injection, all for FREE.

With a background not just in real estate, but also in the creative and fast-paced world of commercial radio, Charmain is excited to work alongside Jean and the team here in the west Kaipara. These days, she reiterates, being a property investor is no trivial matter, and as in any professional business it’s best to source good advice from those who know the industry. With a wealth of skills at her disposal and a true empathy for both landlord and tenant, Charmain is here to offer intelligent solutions for her clients. Charmain definitely has true enthusiasm for the pace of life and lifestyle of our slice of New Zealand.

We know that docking and castration are painful (but necessary) procedures and by alleviating pain young animals will drink more around the time of docking and castration and as a result will grow better over this time. We will also be posting handy information on our Facebook page to help you rear prize winning animals for your Ag day so make sure you keep a watch on our page.

Hitting the canvas for Dargaville u by Andy Bryenton

The Maniacs United pro wrestling team will help out two local causes when they take to the ring on August 3, at Dargaville’s town hall for their sixth visit to the region, both the volunteer fire brigade and a local netball team will be better off.

Visitors roll in by the river A tourism venture in the heart of Dargaville turns one year old this week, with scores of recreational vehicle enthusiasts gathering for an anniversary rally; in its first year of operation, the RV park on River Road has seen more than 7,000 guests — a significant boost for the area.

p Our guests on wheels from the NZMCA are a welcome sight for tourism and hospitality entrepreneurs, bringing valuable patronage year-round

While ticket and door sales for the August 3 event, which includes the New Zealand tag team title match, will go direct to Dargaville’s firefighters, the concession stand will be operated by the players and coaches of Pouto Netball, who are often out on the road contesting tournaments for both fun and for competition points. Professional wrestling may be viewed mainly as a sporting spectacle here, but by supporting local good causes, the skilled sports entertainment

stars of Maniacs United have a link to their foreign compatriots in the ring. In Mexico, the immensely popular wrestling legend El Santo became a public figure thanks to both his dominance in the sport and his desire to enact social change and help the less fortunate. By helping out in our town, for the sixth time in a row, these Kiwi wrestling superstars are showing that big muscles and big hearts go together. Tickets are available now from Ray White Real Estate in Dargaville. ¢

Even at this time of year, say members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, the ‘winterless north’ has huge appeal, with some affiliates living a nomadic life, coming here to the top of the nation to avoid the southern chill. Vice president of the association, Mike Frost, confirms those top numbers for local tourism. More than 1,550 individual RVs have stayed at the riverside park during the past year, totalling 7,025 guest-nights. That has a predicable flow-through to local service industries, such as hospitality and restaurants, motor servicing and fuel, tourist and sightseeing operators

— to name a few. If each RV driver were to fill up with fuel here, enjoy a meal in a local restaurant and top up supplies at a grocery store, these figures equate to more than half a million dollars in tourist revenue during a single year. The anniversary RV rally last weekend saw NZMCA members young and old coming to town for some mid-winter fun. The group included the longest-serving member of the association, Mrs Leila Tibbits, who has been active in the RV world for 54 years. Several other members received their 10 and 20-year badges as the good-natured ‘nomads of the Kiwi highways’ made Dargaville their home for the weekend. ¢

Wastewater upgrade nears completion u by Andy Bryenton

A large-scale wastewater upgrade project, which has restricted public access to Dargaville’s Taha Awa Riverside Gardens is drawing to a close, with improvements including the installation of several giant holding tanks ready to come online. The tanks being placed in at the Taha Awa Gardens are an upgrade to Pump Station 2, part of a mostly unseen subterranean network that carries waste from Dargaville homes and businesses. Fairy terns in court action u by Paul Campbell

Forest & Bird is beginning a court battle to protect the habitat of New Zealand’s most endangered bird, the fairy tern or tara iti, which it says are threatened by the Northland Regional Council’s Proposed Regional Plan. The conservation organisation has filed an Environment Court appeal against NRC, which calls for the council to protect mangrove forests, that provide vital habitat for New Zealand fairy terns says Forest & Bird northern regional manager, Nick Beveridge. “The Kaipara and Mangawhai harbours are critically important for the tara iti and the bittern, so it would be disastrous if large areas of mangroves were cleared.” “There are only about 36 tara iti left in the world, so we need to make sure the places where they feed and breed are not disturbed or destroyed,” he says. “Critically endangered Australasian bitterns and threatened banded rails also live in Northland’s mangrove forests. These rare birds could be pushed closer towards extinction if the Proposed Northland Regional Plan goes through, allowing people to remove up to 200 square metres of mangroves. “The plan marks out areas with significant birdlife, but does not impose any extra rules on mangrove removal or development in these areas.” Forest & Bird is calling for the plan to protect

p Forest & Bird northern regional manager, Nick Beveridge

Significant Bird Areas in the same way that Significant Ecological Areas are protected from harmful development and the removal of native trees, such as mangroves. “At present, the plan provides better protection for cockle beds than it does for tara iti — it’s just unbelievable. The plan is terribly deficient when it comes to protecting the habitat of our most endangered bird, which is just a heartbeat away from extinction.” Stronger rules to ensure water quality is not degraded in lakes, rivers and streams are also called for in Forest & Bird’s appeal. ¢

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Re: your recent article: ‘Dolphin plan threatens fishers’. In my 76 years living locally and my 60 as an active fisherman on the Kaipara Harbour, I have only seen two dolphins within the harbour environs. These were not Hector’s or Maui dolphins. Additionally, the light nets used by recreational fishers should not pose a threat to large marine mammals. I have seen kingfish, for example, go right through light mullet nets. As I

understand it, the current law also states that fishers must clear their nets before the tide leaves the net. Is it, therefore, fair to threaten the livelihood of several people and the beneficial enjoyment of our harbour with no evidence of harm? I cannot see the sense in shutting down the harbour to fishing activities based on scant evidence. Let us see transparency in this debate and all the facts presented. Warren Bryant, Dargaville

DRIVE SAFE On Rural Roads

A bowls stalwart passes u by Paul Campbell

A crowded Mangawhai Club recently farewelled a remarkable man, following the passing of John Wintle, 73, a farmer, father, grandfather and community leader, who died on July 7 at Hibiscus Hospice. With bowls, his long-time passion, John Leonard Wintle’s life was entwined with the history and expansion of the sport in Mangawhai. He was and remains the only life member of the club of which he was the key founder, serving in many roles, from greenkeeper to president. Anecdotes of a colourful life abounded at his farewell, with his son Shane commenting he had packed 100 years of living into his 73 years, farming dairy and deer on properties including at Paparoa and also spending 12 years as a stock agent. His leadership saw the Hakaru Bowling Club grow into the chartered Mangawhai Club. Back in 1989, Otamatea County Council made way for Kaipara District Council, as the once sleepy coastal town of Mangawhai continued to grow. John was the leading light in plans to move Hakaru Bowls to Mangawhai with the official clubrooms opening in December 1994. In 2003, he succeeded with supporters in establishing a chartered club, as its foundation president,

to safeguard the future of bowls in the area. The club has experienced rapid growth since and is central to the local community. John is survived by his wife, Kristine and family of Glen and Amie, Mike and Erica, and Shane and Lisa and grandchildren, Jackson and Ashton; Sheldon and Isabella; Mason, Boyd, James, Annalise and Xavier. ¢

Fia Fia a celebration of culture

New service gets mobile u by Andy Bryenton

When doctors told Dargaville man Chris Sexton that he would be unable to work again due to the after-effects of a significant injury, he didn’t take the news as an ultimatum; instead, he’s found something he can excel at, establishing a runabout service to help keep locals mobile. Chris says he was not comfortable ‘doing nothing’, and he wanted to bring something to the community, which was not available at the time. “Working with ACC and Workready, we asked ‘well, what can I do?’ What do we need here in town?” He settled on providing a runabout service, to transport people to appointments, to do their shopping, or to meet up with friends. Dargaville has a large population of elderly residents who may find it difficult to stay mobile, especially in poor weather. Then there is the ever-present need for folks to travel to Whangarei, often for medical appointments with providers such as the hospital and optometrists. With new resolve, he attained the correct licenses and charted out a new venture. Thus Chris’ Runabout Service was born, with a smartly signwritten late model Toyota RAV4 hitting the street in mid-July. Chris says that unlike a taxi, he works out a price with his passenger over the phone before pick-up, and thus can help those on a restricted budget. For example, a trip to Whangarei and back can be accomplished for as little as $40. In addition to his runabout

More than 18 students representing the heritage of our neighbouring nations in the Pacific have come together as a group, with the help of their friends and family, and that of Stand - Tu Maia representative and full-time school staff member Karla Lindsay. They aim to bring the dance and song, artistry, culture and history of their varied Pasifika cultures to a Dargaville audience. Whangarei Boys’ and Whangarei Girls’ high schools will send representatives in reciprocation of DHC attending their own Pasifika cultural festival. “Because we live in a small community, with predominantly Maori

All island cultures are different, and we can all celebrate those differences.” Aptly, Fia Fia translates roughly to ‘happiness’ or ‘celebration’, a fitting title for an evening planned since the start of the year to be an expansion on 2018’s inaugural event. Tickets, which include entertainment and an authentic pacific-style meal, are available now from Dargaville High School. ¢

The runway, the fairway and the green The flagship Dargaville Wearable Arts creative event is set to expand its horizons with the promise of a creative and action-packed weekend featuring a sponsored golf and bowls tournament starting Friday, September 13. Dargaville Wearable Arts will have its first show on the Friday night with a matinee on Saturday afternoon and the grand finale in the evening. “It’s a way of cementing it as a permanent feature in the Northland calendar. We started with two shows in 2017 and added a matinee last year — which proved to be immensely popular for family groups and out of town travellers,” says producer John Pickford. Tickets are now on sale at wearablearts. nz and dargavillearts.co.nz. Dargaville Wearable Arts has also provided trophies for the weekend’s golfing and bowls tournament, with bowls on Friday starting at 9am promising to be a fun event with mixed triples (bowlers and non-bowlers) and entry is just $10. For the associated golfing event a tournament will be held on September 13 at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club at Baylys Beach. There is an individual men’s and women’s division, Stapleford competition and the event is open to non-handicap golfers. “The latest events are intended to become annual fixtures, and it’s all about giving people a great weekend in

In 1981 the concept of an international student exchange between Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and Dargaville, New Zealand was a new and exotic one communications were sporadic and expensive, distances were vast, but Astrid Souza was up to the challenge.

the north and making Dargaville a top destination,” said John. “We hope to see people doing more than one event. For anyone living out of town, they could come to the Wearable Arts matinee and be back home in time for a movie. Over the whole weekend, make Dargaville a holiday destination, be it motelling, B and B, or a motor home or caravan park. Make it destination Dargaville and find a warm welcome.” ¢

Staying with the Elliott family, Astrid was given a little pre-flight training by the local Rotary club in her hometown, who had arranged the exchange with their Kiwi ‘opposite numbers’ in a town she calls ‘the best in New Zealand’. “They taught me that I was an ambassador for Brazil,” she says, “and to behave with honour and dignity. When I came here to Dargaville, I discovered the same principles. A student travelling overseas may find not just a place to visit or a hotel, but another home.” That’s why Astrid and her husband Oswaldo have returned to Dargaville

after 38 years. They are celebrating 30 years of marriage, and their three children, now grown, have pitched in to help fulfil Astrid’s dream of revisiting those people who showed her such kind hospitality. “What was in my heart when I thought of New Zealand was to be thankful,” she said, addressing a group, which included Brenda Elliott, her host from 38 years ago. “I would like to thank you for this precious time and to encourage you to keep doing this, accepting a new generation of exchange students.” ¢

Taking stories to the stage u by Andy Bryenton

This past weekend saw a regional celebration of one of the most ancient of the visual arts, as actors, directors and technical crew came together for 2019’s Theatre New Zealand Northland Theatrefest. Four very distinct and individual plays were performed at the Dargaville Little Theatre, in a head-to-head competition adjudicated by actor, performer, documentary film-maker and director Johnny Givins. Organisers cited an ‘amazing’ day yesterday hosting competitors from Dargaville Little Theatre, Ruawai College and Otamatea Repertory Theatre. They are also excited to announce that the Dargaville venue will also be hosting the Upper North Island Regional Theatrefest in mid-August. Winners were chosen from among a variety of categories, reflecting the many skills and talents required to bring a theatrical story to life.

Blake Hassall of Ruawai College took home the Technical Excellence award, while Excellence in Acting awards went to Dargaville’s Shannon Cutts and Adrian Humm, Ruawai College’s Hunter Connett and Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s Kallan Brooks-Owens. The coveted award for Best Overall Production went to Too Late, written and directed by Deborah Steele and performed by members of the Dargaville Little Theatre. An enthusiastic audience was entertained not only by the four plays on offer, but also by an ensemble of vocal performers who took the stage between productions with a medley of tunes from cinema classics. ¢

Maungaturoto’s 1940s former National Bank building has a new lease of life as The Bank Cafe at 142 Hurndall Street.

p Dylan Brandt and his team provide a warm welcome at The Bank Cafe

Owner Dylan Brandt originally hails from South Africa and took over the former Cafe De Mairis at the end of June and retains the current cafe team. “We strive to cater to all people near and far,” says Dylan, who is already proving a hit with the locals, with a revamped menu including fresh vegetarian protein boost salad in the cabinet and fresh Cabanossi puffs in the warmer. Also on the menu are berries, yoghurt and muesli “so customers can grab some healthy options for breakfast on the run” and bacon and brie sliders. “There is chocolate cheesecake, homemade chicken noodle soup with

An object of intrigue u by Liz Clark

Off State Highway 12, just out of Matakohe, a small dilapidated church down a gravel side road has raised the curiosity of many a traveller and photographer. Known as the Zion church, the building was constructed in 1888/89 by Ebenezer Morris for a group of Te Rawara people who had come to the Kaipara from Whangape to find work in the milling and kauri gum industries. Scottish-born Morris took on the task of constructing a new place of worship that would take pride of place for generations to come. The small but well-constructed building was completed at the cost of £200 and dedicated on April 4 1889, by Archdeacon Clarke before a large gathering of settlers and iwi. In the 1930s the church converted from Anglican doctrine to Ratana but at some point in time fell into disuse.

Builder Ebenezer Morris was in business at Thames, Matakohe and Auckland. One of his first contracts was the Matakohe School. During the 1890s he went into partnership with a Mr McLean and constructed St Paul's Anglican Church, Symonds Street in 1894–1895. At the turn of the century, Morris undertook several government contracts including alterations and additions to the Auckland Magistrates Court, the courthouse in Te Awamutu and to the Auckland Asylum (now Unitech). He also constructed post offices in Devonport and Huntly in 1907 and 1908. Morris passed away at his residence in Mount Albert in 1929 at the age of 81.

It’s a famous part of the main street, and a well-known destination for anyone looking for that special gift now, after 10 years in Dargaville, Snazzi Gifts is celebrating a decade in business with a further big expansion. Owner and entrepreneur Amanda Sole has gathered together a collection of the wild, interesting, alluring and esoteric to fill a space three times that of her original modest gift shop in Victoria Street. Now stretching nearly from one end of McKay’s Arcade to the other, this cornucopia of surprises is a testament to a sharp eye for what people want and need. Incense and scents from North America, gemstones and crystals from the south, uniquely Kiwi keepsakes and souvenirs, and ornaments depicting the figures of our collective mythology, from angels and fairies to knights and dragons. With the expansion, items now have room to take the spotlight and be more easily seen, sharing space with new additions. There’s a section just for wind chimes, and a rack of ornately feathered dream catchers. A ‘man cave’ section is hung with signs advertising

motorcycles and classic cars. With the entire front end of a vintage bike seeming to ‘crash’ through the wall, its headlamp repurposed as a wall light. It’s no wonder that many of the visitors to Snazzi Gifts spend a long time simply enjoying the sights and scents. It may be the biggest collection of items like these for sale in the country; it’s certainly the most stunning in the north. To celebrate a decade of success, during which time the Snazzi Gifts brand has emigrated from Whangarei

to become a permanent fixture in Dargaville, Amanda is organising a special birthday bash on August 10, at 10am. Come along to see the new and expanded range in-store, have your fortune divined by a reader of the cards, and enter the draw to win some suitably grand his and hers prizes. Dargaville Sewing Centre Celebrates 25 years The fabric of our town There’s a saying that it’s the little speciality stores, which make a town, and if that’s the case, then Dargaville’s Sewing and Curtain Centre is living proof. With two and a half decades of service not just to the crafty and creative but also to learners, charitable causes and the arts, there’s plenty of reason for Marion and her team to celebrate the quarter-century with style. The current iteration of the popular sewing and creative store is the third such to spring up in Dargaville. With previous locations in different parts of town, this is the largest evolution of the enterprise, comprising not just sections for thread, fabrics, buttons and Janome’s range of sewing machine’s but also a complete curtain section to complement modern interior design, a selection of wool, and even a teaching space where everyone from kids to veteran quilting club fabric artists are welcome. This extra addition, (which sits next to a very handy kid’s play area) has seen many of our local people take up the fabric-based arts for the first time under expert tutelage. As machines evolved from the simple tools of yesteryear to the computeraugmented wonders of tech, which they are today, the Dargaville Sewing team have kept ahead of the knowledge

curve, introducing young and old to the possibilities. Quilts made here have graced art gallery walls, honoured our servicemen and women for Anzac Day, and have been donated to needy families with small children under the auspices of Plunket. Of course, 25 years of service to local retail has not been enough on its own for the community-involved management and staff of this busy store. With friends and family heavily involved in the theatre, in church activities and education programmes, and in assisting with the town’s annual wearable arts, to name but a few, there’s a strong community service focus here as well. On behalf of the business and creative community, congratulations on a quarter century, with many more years to come! ¢

When only the best will do Kaipara North Property Management 2019 has been established to redefine property management by meeting the needs of our clients and understanding exactly what landlords are looking for in a property management company. Our passion for real estate began in 2002 when we developed a love for the diversity and challenges that property management offered. Working with a leading South Auckland company, Vanessa Parker the joint owner along with Mehgan Wright of Kaipara North Property Management has dealt with a broad range of tenants and issues, which means our landlords know we can deal with anything that arises and potential issues are anticipated. Our focus is to offer a high level of professionalism while still maintaining a high level of communication and expertise within the industry. We maintain a small quality portfolio, which means our clients and their valuable investments receive our care and attention to ensure the job is done well. Not to shock anybody, but did you realise that it’s only 20 weeks until the end of the school year? Moreover, that’s counting exam time. When it comes down to it, it’s more than halfway along toward Christmas, the summer and the holidays. The daffodils are up, and spring is on the doorstep. Yet many of us are still procrastinating on those renovation chores.

It’s twice the issue for those jobs that require permits and consents, all of which will have to make their way through the machanisms of local governance before any actual work takes place. Building a garage, extending a room, constructing a deck, digging a dam or even installing a fireplace all require some planning and a bit of form-filling, so it’s fair to cut another few weeks off the schedule. Then there’s the fact that many of the parts required for major jobs have to be sourced from suppliers who manufacture to order. Some must come from overseas. Another couple of weeks off the clock there. Factor in the fact that our best local tradespeople are very, very, busy right now. You’ll see that there are, in fact, merely a couple of months remaining on the calendar in which to book in to get work completed before Christmas.

As with most things, it’s not the waiting. It’s not knowing. So make the call, get the plans in motion, get the paperwork dotted, crossed and stamped, and your chances of getting it all done in time to put your feet up in the sunshine are looking good! ¢

Harvesting vital information u by Andy Bryenton

As this year’s waterfowl hunting season comes to an end, with the last day for harvesting paradise shelduck and black swan on August 4 in the Northland region, a secondary harvest is being calculated to keep track of the impact of waterfowl species and their numbers. Fish and Game trap, band and release large numbers of birds each year to keep track of breeding numbers, the area over which populations range, and indirectly several other factors that paint a picture of wetland health and the interaction of waterfowl species with other New Zealand flora and fauna. Hunters logically come into possession of many of these bands, and getting the information back closes the circle, allowing Fish and Game to collate data and plan for the next hunting season, among other environmental management and recovery initiatives. To incentivise this process, they have teamed up with Hunting and Fishing, who are providing prizes for those who take part in the banding study. “Getting the band number and details of where and when birds were harvested, and their age, provides invaluable information,” says Hunting and Fishing New Zealand’s head of marketing, Chris Cameron. “An estimated 6,000 birds were banded last summer, and it’s the 23rd year that banding has been carried out. It’s a key programme that allows Fish and Game to monitor population trends, and help staff manage game bird resources with the tools of season lengths and bag limits.”
